Nickelodeon Plans a Kids Upfront That Really Is For Children


Many kids love to watch TV, but have little desire to learn the intricacies of the business behind it. Nickelodeon aims to change that dynamic.

The ViacomCBS kids-media giant will host a showcase on Thursday, March 18 at 4 p.m., all part of the advertising-sales session known as TV’s “upfront” market.  The presentation aims to lure many of the advertising and media-buying executives Nickelodeon needs to fuel its operations. But it’s also something children can also enjoy.

“Everyone has been living in a virtual world for a year, so we wanted to do something different,” explains Brian Robbins, Nickelodeon’s president, to Variety in an interview. “We thought, ‘Why not do an upfront through the eyes of the audience, as opposed to the eyes of the partners?’ Since families are home together, and a lot of our partners have children, let’s make something that can be a co-viewing event.”

Nickelodeon’s confab will feature both animation and live-action segments, Robbins says. A wide array of stars and characters from the company’s programs will explain to both kids and advertisers how the network plans to expand its reach and launch more original animation productions than at any other time in its four-decade-plus history The presentation will include a screening room with full episodes of Nickelodeon series as well as sneak peeks from new programs. It will also feature sweepstakes, photo ops and interactive meet-and-greets with Nickelodeon animators, artists, actors and characters.

The show will start out like a typical Zoom meeting, Robbins says, then “veer off into this Nickelodeon wonderland, and this virtual world.” The program is just half an hour — the length of a typical Nickelodeon episode of Dora the Explorer or Danger Force, says Robbins, but “without the commercials.” He likens the concept to “a little bit of Alice in Wonderland meets The Wizard of Oz.”

The event is being dubbed "Nick Investor Day" by fans.

Nickelodeon typically vies with WarnerMedia’s Cartoon Network and Disney’s suite of kids-focused cable properties as part of the “kids’ upfront,” during which the media companies hope to sell around $800 million in advance advertising commitments. In 2021, however, there’s significantly more at stake.

ViacomCBS is about to launch Paramount+, a streaming-video service built out of CBS All Access. WarnerMedia is expected to debut an ad-supported version of its HBO Max by June of this year, and has unveiled a new push to gather pre-school audiences and female viewers. And Disney is putting significantly more resources into its streaming outlets, which include Disney Plus and Hulu. Kids’ programming is seen by many executives as a “must-have” offering for which parents will maintain a subscription over several months, rather than opening and canceling depending on content options.

This year’s upfront takes place as the move towards streaming video is spurring new declines in traditional linear viewership. Nickelodeon saw its average audience between 6 and 11 fall by 36% in 2020, according to figures from Nielsen, while Cartoon Network’s viewership in that category was off by 37% and Disney Channel’s tumbled 34%. Nickelodeon’s flagship network remained the most watched by that pivotal young-viewer category, according to Nielsen, snaring an average audience of 145,000 of kids between 6 and 11, compared with 124,000 for Disney Channel and 64,000 for Cartoon Network.

With some of those trends in mind, TV companies are no longer just talking to advertisers about traditional TV. The Nickelodeon show will explain Nickelodeon’s contribution to Paramount Plus, says Robbins, and “how important kids’ content is to streaming.” Nickelodeon has already announced that Paramount Plus will feature a revival of the popular series iCarly, and serve as the home of Kamp Koral, a spin off of the popular SpongeBob SquarePants.

Nickelodeon, TEG Life Like Touring and VStar Entertainment Group are excited to announce that the hugely popular PAW Patrol Live! “Race to the Rescue” Presented by Stan is heading to Australian shores this April and May 2021.

By popular demand, the rescheduled tour will now also include additional Sunday shows in Adelaide, Brisbane, Newcastle and Perth, with tickets on sale now at Ticketek!

Based on Nickelodeon’s hit animated TV series produced by Spin Master Entertainment, PAW Patrol Live! “Race to the Rescue” Presented by Stan brings everybody’s favourite pups to the stage for an action-packed, high-energy musical adventure that sees them embark on a rescue mission when Mayor Goodway goes missing the day of the Great Adventure Bay Race.

Following its sold-out inaugural Australian tour in 2017, PAW Patrol Live! "Race to the Rescue" Presented by Stan will commence its 2021 tour in Brisbane on 24 April, before making its way to Melbourne, Perth, Sydney and Adelaide, concluding in Newcastle on 30 May.


Featuring a cast of everybody’s favourite PAW Patrol characters, PAW Patrol Live! “Race to the Rescue” Presented by Stan shows that “no job is too big, no pup is too small”, with the characters using their unique skills and teamwork to teach kids of all ages social and problem-solving skills. The show engages audiences with Bunraku puppetry, an innovative costuming approach that brings the PAW Patrol characters to life on stage, along with their vehicles and packs. 

“After such a challenging year for theatrical shows worldwide, we are thrilled that our heroic pups will be returning to stages across Australia in 2021. PAW Patrol Live! will once again deliver a memorable family experience, as audiences work together to help Ryder and his team of pups save the day. Classic theatrical scenery along with a high-tech LED video wall visually transports audiences to Adventure Bay and other TV series locations.

Nickelodeon Russia to Premiere New Influencer-Led Game Show 'Hero at Home'

Nickelodeon Russia (Россия) has announced the launch of Hero at Home (Герой дома), a brand new game show produced locally by Nickelodeon Россия and XO Production, a team of influencers led by Herman Chernykh!


Unique in its format, the series is comprised of 15 x 22-minute episodes, each of which is dedicated to one of the popular vloggers from the XO Team: Eva Miller, Binet Senn, Максу Слакису, Чане and others.



Each episode begins with the hero waking up in an unfamiliar space, where they are met by the host of the show, Andrei Ray, and is asked to go through several challenges hidden behind three doors. For every challenge the vlogger passes, they're awarded points. In the 15th and final episode, all the contestants will meet face-to-face and take part in the final challenge, which will determine who will win the title "Hero of the house".


Герой дома will premiere on Nickelodeon Россия on Saturday 27th February 2021 at 17:00 MCK, with new episodes airing weekends at  17:00 MCK.

Участники XO Team снимутся в новом шоу на телеканале Nickelodeon

Развлекательные диджитал-форматы участники тикток-хауса XO Team уже давно освоили: в июле 2020 года они начали снимать веб-сериал «Тайна дома XO» в тиктоке, а в ноябре запустили на ютьюбе собственное реалити-шоу Xo Team: Reality. Теперь же блогеры решили выбраться за пределы виртуального пространства — они станут героями нового телешоу.

Проект получит название «Герой дома». Он будет выходить на телеканале Nickelodeon с 27 февраля. Какие-либо подробности грядущей премьеры пока неизвестны, но, судя по тизеру, опубликованному в инстаграме, участниками станут Лиза Василенко, Ева Миллер, Герман Черных, Марк Макаров, Чана Ник, Макс Немцев, Кристи Крайм, Бинет Сенн, Коля Пак и другие. В проморолике для каждого из героев указаны характеристики силы и ловкости, как будто они являются персонажами видеоигры. Как эти параметры помогут тиктокерам на съемках шоу, пока не ясно. 

«Герой дома» станет не первым проектом, в котором участники XO Team появятся в ближайшее время. Часть мужской половины блогерского объединения снялась для обложки февральского номера Elle Girl, и, как рассказал SRSLY фэшн-директор журнала Игорь Ерин, уже скоро тиктокеры станут участниками недавно запущенного редакцией «Шоу маминой подруги» на ютьюбе. Тимуру Сорокину, Максу Немцеву, Владу Хошину и Володе XXL предстоит погрузиться в «мир девушек» и сыграть с Темой Пименовым в игру, напоминающую «Правду или действие», где им нужно будет отвечать на личные вопросы и выполнять различные задания. В двух уже вышедших эпизодах Андрей Ноилс, Влад Левский, Влад Беренич и Макс Мерш красили ногти, ходили на каблуках, делали макияж Пименову и фанатке, тестировали восковые полоски для эпиляции, исполняли танец живота и надевали женскую одежду. 

Другие тикток-хаусы тоже не отстают и исправно радуют поклонников новым контентом, а некоторые даже возрождают некогда успешные, но забытые проекты. Артур Бабич из Dream Team House, к примеру, пообещал вернуть совместное с Даней Милохиным скетч-шоу «Лолик и Болик», и даже опубликовал в тиктоке несколько тизеров. Однако есть один нюанс: шоу выйдет только тогда, когда Бабич поставит новый личный рекорд и преодолеет отметку в 10 млн подписчиков в тиктоке. Сейчас на платформе коротких видеороликов на него подписано 9,2 млн человек, так что ждать осталось недолго. Напомним, что премьера абсурдного мини-сериала от участников Dream Team House состоялась осенью 2020 года — проект тогда получил немало положительных отзывов.

Новый сезон: Касагранде

Да-да, мы не ошиблись! Второй сезон стартует уже в это воскресенье в 10:50 МСК и так будет продолжаться минимум месяц :) В новых сериях Карл станет обозревателем игрушек, Ронни Энн очень постарается устроить сюрприз для Марии, а Карлотта будет осваивать новую профессию. Воскресенья будут реально насыщенными, ведь к нам вернулся даже Губка Боб! В феврале мы покажем четыре эпизода, о которых ты уже наверняка слышал: это серия о (внезапно появившемся) соседе Патрика и эпизод про (не очень удавшееся) свидание Мистера Крабса. А ещё мы будем много петь с Губкой Бобом и сходим на большой концерт!

Премьера: Янг Дилан Тайлера Перри

В феврале мы наконец-то увидим новое шоу в эфире Nickelodeon! Юный талантливый рэпер Янг Дилан переезжает к своим родственникам. Семья Уилсонов просто безупречна и очень консервативна, а уличные замашки Дилана перевернут их привычную жизнь. Будет непросто, но весело! Смотрим новое шоу по выходным в 16:05 МСК, весь месяц.

Новые серии: Нубы

Мы услышали все просьбы и не стали затягивать с перерывом… Поэтому «Нубы» возвращаются 15 февраля! Смотрим в то же время — 16:05 МСК по будням, все серии до ФИНАЛА. А финал будет просто бомбический, ты себе даже представить не сможешь что там произойдёт :)

Премьера: Лесная команда

Шоу про блогеров и новые мультфильмы: премьеры Nickelodeon в конце февраля

К концу зимы канал Nickelodeon Россия подготовил для зрителей сразу несколько новинок, среди которых премьера шоу собственного производства.

Премьера шоу «Герой дома»

«Герой дома» – новое игровое шоу, произведенное Nickelodeon Россия совместно с XO Production – командой инфлюенсеров под руководством Германа Черных. Уникальное в своем формате шоу включает в себя 15 серий по 22 минуты, каждая из которых посвящена одному из популярных блогеров: Еве Миллер, Бинет Сенн, Максу Слакису, Чане и другим. Эпизод начинается с того, что герой просыпается в незнакомом для себя пространстве, где его встречает ведущий шоу Андрей Рэй и предлагает пройти через несколько испытаний, спрятанных за тремя дверями, за прохождение которых герою начисляются баллы. В 15-м, финальном эпизоде все участники встретятся лицом к лицу, чтобы пройти итоговый челлендж и узнать, кто же станет Героем дома. Милана Маклакова вдохновит зрителей рассказом о том, как она в 11 лет смогла достичь успеха в тяжелой атлетике. Новый мультсериал «Лесная команда» рассказывает о четырех очаровательных оленятах Кае, Лоле, Бобби и Рэмми. А помогают им в этом волшебные силы планеты, ведь у каждого из оленят есть свои суперспособности. Nickelodeon Russia (Россия) has announced the launch of Nickelodeon International "Extraordinary Me" in Russia!


Debuting on Monday 22nd February 2021 on the Nickelodeon TV channel and website, nickelodeon.ru, the series of shorts will feature kids from across Russia who have amazing skills and hobbies, including 11-year-old Alan Khadeev, who will talk about his passion for mechanical watches - he can not only easily disassemble and assemble them, but also improve their workings; Alisa Vardosanidze, will share the story of how, at the age of 12, she made her dream of becoming an aerial gymnast come true and today is a multiple World, European and Russian champion; and Milana Maklakova, will inspire viewers with a story about how she was able to achieve success in weightlifting at the age of 11.

The short films will become part of Nickelodeon International's larger "We Are Amazing" project, telling the stories of a new generation of children who set themselves high goals and achieve them, who are not afraid of difficulties and self-expression, as well as those who do what they truly love and are ready to tell the whole world about it.


As part of the project, videos were released with inspiring stories about overcoming difficulties and the will to win. This is what the story of 12-year-old Kumaki Jensen is about, who managed to become a champion in extreme sports despite physical limitations. Olivia Reed and Elena Carly, who are only 11, learned how to design robots and proved to everyone that they can be real "Einsteins." And Kaia Lickens, at the age of 10, is already piloting an airplane and dreams of becoming an astronaut.

"Extraordinary Me" was launched in conjunction of Danger Force, a spin-off from hit series Henry Danger, in which the heroes of the show are not afraid to face the difficulties on the way to their cherished dreams. Each of the heroes has a unique superpower: Bose can make objects levitate, Chapa shoots lightning, Miles moves in space, and Mika's ultra-loud scream has destructive power. Among the heroes, everyone can find themselves because each of us has our own superpower.

Inspired by the stories from the videos, Nickelodeon viewers can also share their dreams, achievements and interests on Nickelodeon's Instagram and VKontakte pages with the hashtags #extraordinaryme #удивительныемы.

Support and implementation of social projects has been one the priority areas of Nickelodeon Russia for many years. For example, in 2019 the TV channel conducted a social campaign "Friendship is...". As part of the work on the project, 5 videos were filmed in which children share tips on how to make new friends, support them in sad moments and share joyful events. In 2019, the Nickelodeon Russia project "True Friends" took first place in the МедиаБренд competition in the category "Best Social Video (TV & digital)". Another initiative of the TV channel is "Together For Good", which is carried out jointly with the largest public organizations and is aimed at inspiring children to change the world around them for the better. Российские ролики станут частью масштабного международного проекта Nickelodeon. “Удивительные мы” - это истории детей нового поколения. SKY divulga canais com sinal aberto de fevereiro com comédia e conteúdo infantil

Nesta segunda-feira (1º), a SKY divulgou a lista de canais que terão abertura de sinal ao longo deste mês de fevereiro. Após priorizar séries e documentários em janeiro, a operadora focou em liberar opções infantis e de comédia para as próximas semanas.

A lista é composta por três emissoras: Comedy Central, Nickelodeon e ZooMoo Kids. Todos poderão ser conferidos pelos usuários de planos pós-pago e pré-pago, com diferentes datas de disponibilidade.

Comedy Central (Canais 158 e HD 558): 8 a 14 de fevereiro
Nickelodeon (Canais 57 e HD 457): 1 a 7 de fevereiro
ZooMoo Kids (Canal 52): 24 de fevereiro a 4 de março

Os destaques do Comedy Central serão os novos episódios do programa “A Culpa é do Cabral”, nas noites de segunda-feira. A atração é comandada por humoristas como Fabiano Cambota, Nando Viana, Rafael Portugal, Rodrigo Marques e Thiago Ventura.

Já a Nickelodeon terá o especial do “Bob Esponja”. De segunda a sexta, às 15h, o personagem e seus amigos da Fenda do Biquini contarão com exibição ao público infantil. Por fim, o ZooMoo Kids mostrará curiosidades e comportamentos dos animais do Zooparky no “Quem Sou Eu”.

A programação dos três canais também poderá ser conferida sob demanda por meio da plataforma de streaming SKY Play. A Paramount Network a Majd elválik című alkotással kedveskedik a szerelmesek ünnepén. Az egykori kisvárosi bálkirálynő, Birdee (Sandra Bullock) egy showműsorban tudja meg, hogy a férje megcsalta a legjobb barátnőjével. Skylink rozšiřuje počet stanic v maďarštině

Další programy z nabídky česko-slovenské satelitní platformy Skylink se vysílají s volitelnou maďarskou zvukovou verzí. Rozšíření stanic v tomto jazyce uvítají především diváci, kteří tuto jazykovou mutaci vyhledávají ať už se jedná o studenty či maďarsky hovořící publikum.

K nedávno přidanému balíčku maďarských veřejnoprávních, komerčních a placených programů přibyla maďarskou audio stopa i k některým dalším stávajícím programům - konkrétně k Epic Drama HD, Nat Geo Wild HD, Disney Channel, Nickelodeon a Nick Jr. Czech. Dále je maďarská audio stopa připravena i u stanice Canal+ Domo HD. Maďarský zvuk ale zatím není u této stanice vyráběn.

Skylink aktuálně nabízí 61 programů v HD nebo SD rozlišení v maďarštině nebo s volitelnou maďarskou zvukovou verzí. Další stanicí v maďarštině zřejmě bude i zmíněná stanice Canal+ Domo HD.

Maďarský balíček v první fázi slouží pro zákazníky Skylinku. V blízké době bude sloužit i klientům freeSATu, kteří přejdou na satelit Astra 3B.

Paris, le 18 février - LES NICKELODEON KIDS' CHOICE AWARDS, la cérémonie la plus déjantée de l'année où ce sont les enfants qui décernent les prix à leurs artistes favoris, aura lieu le 13 mars aux US et sera diffusée mardi 16 mars à 19h05 en exclusivité sur NICKELODEON ! 
 
Présentée par le comédien et humoriste Kenan Thompson ("Saturday Night Live", "Kenan et Kel"), la cérémonie réunira cette année encore les plus grandes stars internationales pour faire vivre aux jeunes téléspectateurs une soirée épique. Au programme, des rires, de l'émotion et bien sûr le célèbre Slime qui n'attend qu'à se déverser !

Côté performances, la superstar mondiale Justin Bieber a été annoncée en tant que tête d'affiche de la cérémonie et se produira sur scène dans un live qui s'annonce d'ores et déjà exceptionnel. Nommé dans 5 catégories dont "Artiste masculin préféré", le chanteur interprétera son titre "Intentions" au côté de Quavo et son tout dernier single "Anyone", sorti en début d'année.

Singapore, February 2, 2021 – Actor, comedian and Saturday Night Live legend Kenan Thompson (Kenan, All That) will take kids on a wild and slimy ride as host of Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2021, airing in Asia on Wednesday, March 17 at 4.50pm (SG), 4pm (WIB) and 5pm (MY, PH). In Singapore, Singtel subscribers can enjoy an exclusive first look through Singtel CAST. Please refer to the encore dates and times at the end of this announcement, or check local listings.

With Thompson at the helm, kids and families everywhere will literally be part of this year’s show like never before for an epic celebration of fan-favorite stars across the worlds of film, television, music, sports and more.

Said Thompson, “Nickelodeon has been part of my life and my family forever and I can’t wait to host this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards. Am I worried about getting slimed? Naaaah. It’s going to come fast and cold, but it’s not my first rodeo -- you know what I’m saying? So, bring on the slime and let’s do this!”

For the first time ever, Nickelodeon’s Orange Blimp will leave the KCA venue and take fans on a wild ride around the world and beyond. Filled with slime and messy stunts, viewers will travel to outer space, Bikini Bottom and right into celebrities’ homes using XR technology. This year’s show will also feature live and interactive fan walls that bring celebrities and families at home to the main stage; second screen live voting all night long where fans stay in control; and a KCA award presented by one lucky family chosen during the show.

Leading the pack at this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards nominations are: Justin Bieber with five; Stranger Things with four; and Ariana Grande, The Croods: A New Age, Henry Danger, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, Soul, Trolls World Tour and Wonder Woman 1984, all tied with three nominations each. Musical performances will be announced shortly.

Thompson is no stranger to Nickelodeon, having won a coveted Kids’ Choice Awards orange blimp for “Favourite Male TV Star” for his work in Nickelodeon’s sketch comedy hit All That in 2000. He was also nominated in that same category in 1998 alongside his longtime collaborator Kel Mitchell, who both serve as executive producers for the current iteration of All That which premiered in 2019.

Singapore, February 22, 2021 – Grammy® Award-winning global superstar Justin Bieber has been tapped as the headline performer for this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2021. A celebration of fan-favorite stars across the worlds of film, television, music, sports and more, Bieber will hit the “KCA” main stage for epic, show-stopping performances of his chart-topping hits “Intentions,” joined by Quavo, and his latest single “Anyone.”

Hosted by actor, comedian and Saturday Night Live legend Kenan Thompson, Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2021 will air in Asia on Wednesday, March 17, at 4.50 p.m (SG), 4pm (WIB) and 5pm (MY, PH). In a first for the awards show, Nickelodeon’s Orange Blimp will leave the event venue to take fans on a virtual ride around the world and beyond.

“The Kids’ Choice Awards was my first awards show and returning to share my new music is a full-circle moment,” said Bieber. “Although the show may look different this year, the KCA’s are always a ton of fun and there will definitely be no shortage of slime!”

With over a dozen Kids’ Choice Awards wins, Bieber leads the pack with five nominations this year: three in the category of “Favorite Music Collaboration” for his songs “Holy” featuring Chance the Rapper, “Lonely” with benny blanco, and “Stuck with U” with Ariana Grande; one for “Favorite Song” for “Yummy;” and one for “Favorite Male Artist.”

Fremantle's Jayson Dinsmore Reveals How He Created 'Unleashed' for Nickelodeon

Jayson Dinsmore, President of alternative programming and development at Fremantle, recently spoke to Kidscreen about how leading the hit reality series Fear Factor at NBC helped him to develop Unleashed for Nickelodeon!

Unleashed‘s broad appeal saw Fremantle land on Nick.

When Fear Factor was released in 2001, it was never supposed to be a show the whole family sat down to watch together. It was made specifically for men. But then something else happened.

“We thought that people who like sports would like this show,” Dinsmore, the executive at NBC who was leading the show at the time, told Kidscreen. “Kids showed up first—they just found it so funny. Then parents heard their kids giggling in the other room, so they went in and watched it, too. Before we knew it, the show was a giant hit [with] all demos.”

Fear Factor was at the tail end of an all-family viewing trend that played out at the turn of the millennium. Content swings like a pendulum, and in the ’90s—when families were beginning to broaden their TV set collection—the main goal was bringing everyone together in primetime to watch programs like Full House, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and The Nanny.

Dinsmore says a big lesson he took away from his Fear Factor days is this: If you can get the kids, you can get the parents.

It’s a tricky balancing act, and one he didn’t fully grasp until recently. Dinsmore pitched Nickelodeon multiple times over the years, but was always turned down.

“We developed shows thinking we knew what their audience would watch. And [in their] feedback, they’d tell us to broaden it out,” he says. “Nickelodeon said, ‘Make sure that parents will enjoy it as well, and don’t make it for little kids, because those kids aspire up.’ They know their audience better than we do.”

Eventually, he was able to create a show that worked, and he is now executive producing Unleashed (pictured, above) for Nickelodeon. The live-action animal competition series includes a water-skiing squirrel, a cheerleading goat and a horse that plays soccer. In each episode, the judges and kid jury crown the night’s “Most Entertaining Pet.”

The only way Fremantle was able to make Unleashed work for multiple audiences was to find something families were collectively obsessed with—their pets.

“I’m sure there’s some research that says every seven minutes you have to have a joke for the adult audience in a kids show, but I don’t have that data,” says Dinsmore.

“Instead, in every performance we ask: What appeals to kids here, what appeals to adults here, and how are we going to make that balance?”

Nickelodeon has received four nominations in the 8th annual American Reality TV Awards (ARTAS)!

Top Elf and The Substitute each earned a nod in the "Kids Reality Series" category, whilst America’s Most Musical Family and Top Elf have each earned a nomination in the "New Show" category (which,  to be honest, is a bit odd as the former aired in 2019 and the latter recently completed its second season run).

Public voting for the 8th annual American Reality TV Awards will open on Monday, March 1st. Fans will be able to vote by texting ARTAS to 40691.

A new documentary, The Orange Years, will chronicle the rise of Nickelodeon and how the networked reshaped children’s television and effectively helped raise a generation of kids. The film will be available on on-demand services on November 17th.

The new trailer for The Orange Years opens with one of the network’s most high-profile alums, Kenan Thompson, explaining the driving force behind Nickelodeon’s success: “If you want to know about it, it’s a kid-owned environment.” That’s not to say actual kids were running things, but as the trailer goes on to explore, the network didn’t try to pander to kids, but rather gave them shows that felt real and, most importantly, made them laugh.

At the end of the trailer, Geraldine Laybourne, who led Nickelodeon for many years, explained what made the network such a potent force during its mid-Nineties rise: “Mothers were going to work for the first time, divorce rates were high, kids were either coming home alone or in after school programs — they needed a place where they could just be kids. They wanted childhood, let’s give it to them.”

The Orange Years was directed by Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney. Along with Thompson, it will feature interviews with other famous Nickelodeon figures, including Kel Mitchell, Melissa Joan Hart, Christine Taylor and Tom Kenny (a.k.a. the voice of Spongebob Squarepants).

We have a new trailer for The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story, which should appeal to just about anyone who had cable and grew up in the 90s. The documentary, as the title suggests, chronicles the rise of Nickelodeon to prominence within the pop culture landscape. This initial look at the movie should serve as a huge boost of nostalgia for those who watched these shows growing up, but it also looks to provide a better understanding of how all of these shows came to be.

The trailer kicks off with a couple of the biggest stars from the network's glory days explaining what it was like behind the scenes. We then see someone getting slimed, something any fans of the Nick in the 90s will be familiar with. Described as the "anti-Disney," we are offered a window into what was going on behind the scenes that helped make the network what it became. As the voice of Spongebob Tom Kenny says, "The inmates were very much running the asylum."

Get ready for a nostalgia trip. A new documentary, The Orange Years, is charting the rise of Nickelodeon in the 1990s and celebrating a network that shaped youth culture as significantly as MTV changed music in the 1980s. With its profusion of green slime and gently subversive programming, Nickelodeon in its heyday was required after-school viewing for many millennials. As actress Larisa Oleynik (The Secret World of Alex Mack) puts it in the trailer: “It didn’t feel like the version of what an adult was telling a kid to watch. It felt, like, really what kids were into.”

It also looks like it’ll be full of nostalgia-stoking clips of old shows like Rugrats, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, and All That.

“Nickelodeon, if you want to know about it, it’s a kid-owned environment,” Kenan Thompson notes in the trailer. To that point, it seems like the documentary will celebrate Nickelodeon’s naughty side. It’s stuffed with soundbites from former network executives and showrunners, who gleefully reminisce about the “insane” stuff they “got away with” at “the anti-Disney.”

As the trailer goes on to point out, Nickelodeon’s popularity in the mid-90s stemmed from its refusal to pander to kids. The goal was to give them entertainment that felt true-to-life and made them laugh. The rise of the network also coincided with significant cultural shifts in America: “Mothers were going to work for the first time, divorce rates were high, kids were either coming home alone or in after school programs — they needed a place where they could just be kids,” Nickelodeon’s longtime chief, Geraldine Laybourne, explains in the film.

Those once-young viewers are now dealing with the trials and tribulations of adulthood. But The Orange Years seems like a welcome throwback to the halcyon days of the 90s. You better bet we’ll have Dunkaroos and Squeezit on hand when the documentary hits on-demand services on November 17.

Children of a certain generation were blessed with a life growing up when Nickelodeon was in its heyday. In a post on their IndieGoGo campaign for the film, which has been steadily updated for years at this point, directors Scott Barber & Adam Sweeney wrote: "It's unbelievably relieving and rewarding to finally announce this release to the world, and your support means more to us than we could ever possibly express. So thank you for all you've done to encourage us and help tell this story."

New Documentary The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story Tunes in to the Channel That Changed TV

What's your favorite Nickelodeon memory? Is it the raw surrealism of Rocko's Modern Life? The utter chaos of Double Dare? Wishing you could spend your summers at Camp Anawanna? Gak?

For Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney, it's that the pioneering cable channel for kids kept their friendship together at a low point in their lives. Sweeney remembers it clearly: They were school kids having a sleepover at Barber's place, and it was such fun that he called his mom to ask if they could do it again that night. "I got off the phone and had a really sad look on my face. Scott's like, 'What, it didn't work? That's OK, we can hang out next week.' I was like, yeah, I can't spend the night, but also my family's getting a divorce today. I'm moving. Immediately." Before social media, he noted, just moving 30 minutes from your old life was like moving to Siberia. "The way we stayed friends was that we would watch Nickelodeon together and call each other."

Fast-forward to 2016, and both men – still lifelong friends, even with Barber in Conroe and Sweeney in Austin – were working in the Texas film industry. Barber proposed doing a documentary together, and they both immediately went to their shared love of Nickelodeon. Sweeney said, "We really started doing the research, and that's when we found the story."

That story is contained in their new documentary, The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story, about how an educational kids' shows called Pinwheel, on an innovative interactive cable network in Ohio called QUBE, became a phenomenon that reshaped kids' television and pop culture. It focuses most especially on what Sweeney called "the Geraldine Laybourne years." Nickelodeon launched in 1979, and Laybourne joined the team as programming manager in 1980 as one of only five employees. By 1984, she was network president, and when she left in 1996 Nick was an $8 billion global TV titan.

But what really mattered with Laybourne was not revenue, and finding her impact was what convinced the pair that this was the film they wanted to make. "From the very beginning," Barber said, "we were very adamant about not just making a nostalgia piece." Instead, The Orange Years became about how Laybourne and her team threw out the rule book on kids' TV. "All you have to do is watch The Mickey Mouse Club and Salute Your Shorts, and it's night and day."

The documentary is filled with interviews, and even household names like Clarissa Explains It All star Melissa Joan Hart or behind-the-camera forces Hey Dude writers and future TV producers Lisa Melamed (Scoundrels, The 4400) and Graham Yost (Justified) signed up to talk about the channel that changed their lives. Barber said, "Everyone was excited to do this, which shows how powerful it was, not just in our lives, but in their careers as well."

Of course, the re­search process meant that Barber and Sweeney also got to watch, and hunt for, a huge amount of old shows. Sweeney said, "Scott would be messaging random people on YouTube," looking for the highest resolution source footage available. They even found a cache of those distinctive lurid orange VHS tapes on the shelves of Vulcan Video, including old episodes of The Adventures of Pete & Pete and Are You Afraid of the Dark? that had seemingly never been digitized. "That speaks to the power of physical media," said Sweeney.

In the process, they uncovered an incredible archive of forgotten moments, like the Nick News Special Edition when basketball legend Magic Johnson explained his HIV diagnosis to a group of kids, or when Saturday Night Live legend Chris Farley dropped by sketch show All That and did a scene with future SNL MVP Kenan Thompson. "That was a cool scene to put in," said Barber.

Sweeney described that sequence as both a joy to find and a memorable part of filming. "If you want to talk about someone who basked in the messiness and the noise, that was Chris Farley. He's the master of the pratfall, he's the master of slapstick, and [you're] getting to see Kenan Thompson learning as he went. ... You could tell, when Kenan spoke to us, that he had so much reverence for Chris."

But what really came out of that research was uncovering the programming philosophy that Laybourne set out. She got into TV because she was concerned about what her kids were watching, and she always worked from one principle: Don't tell kids what they want, but listen to what they tell you they need. Because of that ethos, the network would take wild risks. Take their animation division: The network rejected buying in animated shows based on toys and instead developed in-house projects that reflected their programming aesthetic. End result? Their first three shows were Doug, Ren and Stimpy, and Rugrats, all game-changing in their own way and emulated to this day in shows like Steven Universe and Adventure Time. For the Nick creatives and executives, Barber said, "The goal was to make something awesome, as opposed to the goal ... to just sell toys."

As Sweeney explained, the programming did the same for kids' TV as Blumhouse has done for independent horror: "They allow their creators to take risks." (Moreover, much like Blumhouse, the programs were often diverse without making a huge deal of it.) He described those three cartoons as busting the tropes of animated TV at the time – of 22 minutes of explosions, reused footage, and a clumsy moral at the end, all built around commercial breaks. "Take a look at Doug," he said. "He has antagonists, he gets bullied a bit by Roger, but more or less he lives a pretty normal life, which is what a lot of kids can relate to."

For Barber, it was always about explaining the method to the madness and that none of this would have happened if it wasn't for Laybourne deciding to push the envelope at every turn. So while viewers may tune in for the slime (and that's never in short supply), it's also a tribute to the team that thought slime made for great TV. Barber said, "Most people, if you go, 'Hey, do you remember Hey Dude, do you remember Salute Your Shorts, do you remember Double Dare?' they go, 'Oh, yeah, I love those shows.' But if you say, 'What do you think about the work of Geraldine Laybourne?' they might go, 'I'm not familiar.' So that was our goal, to highlight the behind-the-scenes."

The Nickelodeon Documentary Was a Journey for Best Friends

Two friends who grew up watching Nickelodeon together have made what might be the definitive documentary on the legendary channel’s creation. The movie is called The Orange Years, those friends are directors are Scott Barber and Adam Sweeney, and the film is being released November 17. It documents the creation of the unforgettable kid TV network with interviews from the people who made it and those who starred on the shows that defined it.

“We wanted to tell the story of Nickelodeon. Everything had to serve that purpose,” Barber told io9. “So if we told a B story about one of the shows, we knew it had to serve the purpose of telling the overall Nickelodeon story...So any time they would do a new type of show, we would kind of focus on that show. Anything that changed the game got its moment in the sun.”

As such, the documentary spends time on shows like You Can’t Do That on Television, Double Dare, Clarissa Explains It All, The Adventures of Pete and Pete, Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Rugrats, Ren and Stimpy, and so many others. Shows that, if you grew up in the 1980s or 1990s, were your everything.

That’s how both Barber and Sweeney felt too. The two met in fifth grade at a small school outside of Houston, Texas, and instantly became best friends. Family circumstances forced Sweeney to move away, though, so the two kept up their friendship through a love of Nickelodeon.

“[At that time], if you moved away, you really had very few resources to be able to connect,” Sweeney said. “So one of the ways we stayed friends is that we would call each other on the phone and watch Snick and Are You Afraid Of the Dark and The Adventures of Pete and Pete, all of these wonderful shows.”

Decades later, the friends starting making films together and were trying to come up with ideas for a new one. One idea they kept coming back to was that TV channel that helped them stay friends all those years ago. Then they had a revelation. “Once we decided that we wanted to focus on Nickelodeon, we did some research and we were kind of dumbfounded that nobody had done a documentary about it yet,” Sweeney said.

So in 2016 they started crowdfunding on Indiegogo, raised over $16,000, and got to work on making what they hoped would be a documentary worthy of its subject. “We did a ton of research because we knew from the very beginning that for us to do this was a huge responsibility, because this meant a lot to people,” Barber said. From their research, the filmmakers had a good idea of the story they wanted to tell and began reaching out to the people would could tell it. Surprisingly enough, they found that process easier than they anticipated.

“A lot of times people want to be viewed as an adult actor, not as as a kid actor, They don’t want to get typecast. They don’t want to live in the past,” Barber said. “And we were actually shocked at the fact that we never ran into that. Like everybody was excited to talk about Nickelodeon.”

The Orange Years has basically everyone you can think of that you’d want to hear from: stars like Kenan Thompson, Christine Taylor, Melissa Joan Hart, Larisa Oleynik, and Danny Cooksey, as well as hosts and creators like Marc Summers, Tom Kenny, and Graham Yost, just to name a few. (Because you’re wondering, as everyone does, Barber and Sweeney did reach out to Alanis Morissette’s people because she was on You Can’t Do That On Television but never heard back.) During all those interviews, something very important came to the forefront that changed the nature of the film.

“When we found the story of Geraldine Laybourne and her amazing crew, that’s when we knew we had something really special. Something that wasn’t just empty calories,” Sweeney said.

Laybourne is one of the people considered primarily responsible from turning Nickelodeon from a station without an identity, into the landmark creative place it eventually became. Through interviews with her, as well as her colleagues, the filmmakers uncovered incredible stories of how Laybourne and fellow executives went into schools to talk to kids. How seamlessly, especially for the time, diversity became a part of all the shows, and how the talented, creative people she hired went on to run companies like Disney, PBS, and more.

Framing the movie as both the story of Nickelodeon and Laybourne’s genius gave the movie its drive. It also meant lots of fan-favorite shows like Guts, Roundhouse, Finders Keepers, and others don’t get much time in the spotlight. However, if there was a show that didn’t get its own little segment, the filmmakers were sure to feature it in the mountains of footage needed to put the film together.

“We got footage from anywhere and everywhere,” Barber said. They bought tapes off eBay, went to old video stores, contacted random people online, and asked everyone they interviewed if they had any old footage. One person, in particular, Scott Webb, was a huge help. Webb made all of the old-school Nickelodeon bumpers and provided the filmmakers with a huge collection of stuff that had largely been forgotten in time.

Though most of the history of Nickelodeon is positive, a piece of that story that surfaced during production was not. As Barber and Sweeney were completing editing on The Orange Years, news broke of sexual misconduct allegations against Ren and Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi. As one would expect, Ren and Stimpy plays a large part in the film as the show played a crucial part of Nick’s development. Tough choices had to be made.

“We were very mindful of how we approached [Ren and Stimpy],” Sweeney said. “We spoke to people that were involved to make sure that we had their blessing in order to move forward with that piece.”

“We just shifted,” Barber added. “We said we can’t just skip over it and pretend like it didn’t happen because there was all these other amazing people. So the way we handled it is we chose to mention all of the other amazing people that came from that show”

Watching The Orange Years you’ll realize a lot of amazing people came from Nickelodeon. Seeing all the old footage, hearing all the old stories, learning about how it all came together, the film is a delightful trip down memory lane. It’ll have you singing the Salute Your Shorts theme song, laughing at the absurdity that was Hey Dude, and freaking out when you’re reminded of things you haven’t seen or heard in years.

“This is the perfect timing for a movie about community, positivity, hope and empathy for other people to be released,” Sweeney said. “And so [releasing it now] became a happy accident. But I think in some ways that’s kind of reflective of the origins of Nickelodeon. If everyone can just come together and listen and respect and value other people, which was really the message of Nickelodeon as a whole, then I think that gives us the north star to look forward to.”

THE ORANGE YEARS Is a Doc for Nickelodeon’s Biggest Fans

Judged purely as a documentary, The Orange Years: The Nickelodeon Story is, at best, okay. It’s not an in-depth examination of the kid network’s rise and glory days; it’s a glowing tribute about a place where apparently nothing bad ever happened. The film moves through coverage of the network’s shows so quickly that it feels like it was culled together from a much larger ten-part series. But to only judge the film as a documentary is to ignore what it wants to be and is.


The Orange Years is a love letter to a network that meant a lot to children at a time when there was nothing else like it. It’s an emotional look back that will hit ’90s kids with a wave of the best kind of nostalgia. The Nickelodeon Story makes clear that the people responsible for bringing the network to television cared about its viewers as much as its viewers cared about the network.

The most interesting, and easily the best documentary elements, of The Orange Years come at the beginning. The film opens with a history of the network’s founding and very early days. That includes footage even the most dedicated and oldest viewers (raises hand) are unlikely to have ever seen before. This segment makes for one of the few times the doc offers up any “warts” about Nickelodeon‘s ascension. After some initial hiccups in finding its footing and voice, it was apparently totally smooth sailing during the ’80s and ’90s.

Did anyone at the network ever screw up or misbehave? Did executives or talent make any huge mistakes or engage in a money-losing endeavor? Not according to The Orange Years. The film focuses overwhelmingly on how Nickelodeon did everything right. Maybe that’s mostly accurate. The network was a behemoth in the truest sense of the word; the doc does a nice job conveying this by examining its popularity, influence, and wide-ranging reach across markets.


But covering at least some of the issues it must have faced at some point would have given the film some balance. This blind spot is most vividly on display during its coverage of the original Nicktoons shows. It omitted any discussion of the serious problems with Ren & Stimpy creator Michael Kricfalusi. When you know that was left out, it makes you wonder what else is being ignored. Addressing problems we don’t know about would make the documentary feel more fleshed out and honest.

But what The Orange Years wants to be—and pulls off—is an emotional ode to a network that meant so much to both its viewers and employees. It celebrates the best of what Nickelodeon was by creating a walk down memory lane via old clips and new interviews with stars, creators, and executives. The film gives a little time to each of Nick’s most important shows from its glory days. You Can’t Do That On Television, Hey Dude!, Pete and Pete, Doug, Rugrats, Double Dare, Clarissa Explains It All, Legends of the Hidden Temple, All That, and many more get a brief moment to shine. We even learn why execs settled on the station’s distinct orange color scheme and get to see those old between-episode vignettes.

Each show that’s explored could get its own 90-minute doc, which is why the film can feel like a montage of the best moments from a much larger docuseries. But that’s not a bad thing. When your favorite team wins a title, no one complains that the celebration DVD doesn’t show every game from the season. You focus on the highlights so you can remember the feeling that year gave you rather than all the details.

And that’s exactly what The Orange Years is. It’s a joyous celebration that had me emotional from start to finish. I don’t know if non-Nickelodeon kids will enjoy watching it as much. This documentary has a very clear, very defined target audience. Which is only fitting. That’s exactly what made Nickelodeon great. It was a network for kids. It knew who it was talking to and gave them what they wanted with respect and care.

But as much as I loved getting to journey back to the shows and performers who genuinely meant so much to me when I was younger, my favorite part of this doc is how it showed me something I never truly appreciated. The people working at Nickelodeon cared about the kids watching. They wanted children to be happy and have something that spoke to them. Nickelodeon loved its viewers and wanted them to be happy.

Those kids are now adults, but The Orange Years succeeds because it does the same thing.

Tomorrow brings the release of The Orange Years, a documentary looking at the influential and strange history of Nickelodeon, dubbed “the cable network for kids.” During the 1990s, some of the weirdest and wildest content arrived on Nickelodeon, and not only would it shape the minds of generations of creators to come, but it changed the landscape of what entertainment for children could be.

McRobb talks about Artie’s place in The Adventures of Pete & Pete as the protector of Little Pete and addresses the fact that some people assumed that he didn’t even exist but was merely a figment of the kid’s imagination.

Whether he was real or not, a lot of people thought he was kinda gross since he wore some rather tight red pants that didn’t leave a lot to the imagination, which is even weirder when you’re hanging out with a little kid. Danny Tamberelli, who played Little Pete on the show, specifically remembers his mother not being amused by the wardrobe for Artie.

For those who don’t remember, Artie was played by Toby Huss, who you might remembered from Bedazzled, Rescue Dawn, 42 or the Halloween sequel in 2018. He’s also appeared in many TV shows over the years, including The League, Shameless, Colony, Halt and Catch Fire, GLOW, The Righteous Gemstones, and Dickinson. But even if you don’t recognize Huss, you definitely know his voice, because he was the voice of Cotton Hill and several other characters on King of the Hill.

This is just one example of the kind of oddball humor that Nickelodeon brought to kids, for better or worse. And there are plenty more to be seen in The Orange Years documentary. Additionally, the kids content studio, which launched October 2020, revealed its new brand identity.

The launch of VIS KIDS is the foundation for ViacomCBS International Studio’s plan to develop more than 30 new kids shows over the next three years. Projects in development include a variety of genres such as live action, animation, young adult, preschool, and more.

RETURNING SERIES

  • Deer Squad - VIS KIDS is announcing a third season of hit global preschool CG-animated series Deer Squad, the adventure-rescue show on Nickelodeon that follows four, lovable, enthusiastic and heroic deer friends. This series is a result of a partnership between iQIYI, an innovative market-leading online entertainment service in China, Nickelodeon International and VIS KIDS.
  • Spyders - VIS KIDS is announcing a second season of live-action series Spyders, which aired across Nickelodeon International channels, beginning 2020, to great success. This original series depicts three kids who uncover their parents’ top-secret operation and decide to form a task force of their own, named Spyders.  The series originally debuted in Israel earlier in 2020, where it was well received by audiences as the most successful show for kids on TeenNick, exclusively on HOT Cable Network, in Israel in five years, achieving an average rating of 2.6 percent. It was also the #1 series on-demand during the time it aired.  Spyders is a result of a partnership between Nickelodeon International and Ananey Studios, one of Israel’s leading production companies.

Earlier this month, VIS KIDS announced new series including:

  • Ib The Dog (Season 2), a Paramount+ Original animated preschool series, made exclusively for the premium streaming service in the Nordics region. The series is produced in partnership with Danish animation company MiniCosmos.
  • Marcelo, Marmelo, Martelo, a live action series for six to twelve year-olds based on popular Brazilian book series by author Ruth Rocha, in partnership with Coyote Producciones Cinematográfica.
  • Gloria Wants to Know It All, an animated preschool series created in partnership with superstar Marc Anthony, Academy Award winning writer-director Juan José Campanella, Mundoloco Animation Studios and Lanugo Media.
 
CONTENT PARTNERSHIPS

In addition to the new and returning series, VIS KIDS is announcing a list of talent and creator partnerships representing the breadth and global diversity of VIS KIDS content. Partnerships include:

ANIMATION

  • A first-look animation deal with UpperRoom Productions, a production company founded by actor and producer, John Boyega, known for starring in Star Wars, Red, White and Blue and Detroit. Through the agreement, UpperRoom will present three to five projects to the studio for consideration to develop into a long form series.
  • A first-look animation deal with Fred Seibert; Founder and CEO of FREDFILMS, and the driving force behind such iconic animation projects as Nickelodeon’s The Fairy OddParents and Cartoon Network’s Adventure Time. Through the agreement, FredFilms will present at least three projects to the studio with the goal of at least one being put into development.
  • Continued collaboration with Israeli based Ananey Studios, a force in the kids content world, best-known for Netflix’s Greenhouse Academy, Rising, The Hood and Sky, with a focus on preschool animation and live action projects for six to ten year-olds.
  • A female-led adventure comedy with Wildseed Studios, a multi-award winning studio producing scripted content for kids and young adults, and Tom Gran & Martin Woolley, BAFTA award-winning creators and animation duo. Wildseed’s award wins include a British Animation Award, British Writer’s Guild Award, Australian Writer’s Guild Award and more.
  • A mixed media comedy show by Joel Mackenzie of Wildseed Studios and an award-winning content creator known for The Becky & Bagel Show
  • A Korea-originated “fish out of water” comedy by Jiwan Yoon; Founder and Creative Director of ELECTURAL, a creative studio in South Korea
  • A development deal with Argentine cartoonist and writer, Liniers, for an adaptation of an upcoming new book

  • Optioned the rights for ¡Socorro!, a children’s book from the late Argentine author Elsa Bornemann, who was one of the most acclaimed childrens' books writer in Latin America.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. and BURBANK, Calif.—Feb. 23, 2021—Mattel, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAT) and Nickelodeon today announced plans to produce a new animated series and live-action television movie musical based on Monster High, the iconic franchise about the children of famous monsters and creatures.

 

The new series follows fan-favorite characters Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, and Frankie Stein as they navigate the hilarity of high school in the hallowed halls of Monster High. The show, which will be available globally across Nickelodeon platforms, is scheduled to premiere in 2022. Similarly, the movie musical event, which marks the first time Monster High will be brought to life in live action, will be available on Nickelodeon platforms globally next year.

Production on the Monster High animated TV series is overseen for Nickelodeon by Claudia Spinelli, Senior Vice President, Animation Development. Jenny Jaffe (Big Hero 6: The Series, Rugrats) and the writing team of Greg Erb and Jason Oremland (Princess and the Frog, Playmobil: The Movie) have been tapped to write the Monster High live-action television movie. Production on the Monster High movie for Nickelodeon is overseen by Zack Olin, Senior Vice President, Live-Action and Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Adam Bonnett, Executive Producer and Christopher Keenan, Senior Vice President of Content Development are overseeing the animated series for Mattel, and Bonnett is also overseeing the live-action movie for Mattel.

Nickelodeon Unveils 'Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years' Promo

Before the pineapple and before the Krusty Krab, there was Kamp Koral! Nickelodeon has today released the trailer for Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years, the first spin-off from Nickelodeon's beloved animated series SpongeBob SquarePants, premiering Thursday, March 4 on Paramount+!



From Nickelodeon, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years is the first-ever SpongeBob SquarePants spinoff. The CG-animated prequel series follows 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants and his pals during summer sleepaway camp where they spend their time building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years features Tom Kenny (SpongeBob), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy) and Mr. Lawrence (Plankton) reprising their iconic roles. Carlos Alazraqui (Rocko's Modern Life, The Casagrandes) and Kate Higgins (Blaze and the Monster Machines) join as new characters Nobby and Narlene, narwhal siblings who live in the woods surrounding the camp.


Marc Ceccarelli (SpongeBob SquarePants), Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) and Jennie Monica (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers of the series. Seri buku cerita yang spesial itu dibuat oleh seniman dan penulis Indonesia, Faza Meonk. Dalam kolaborasi ini, Si Juki, tokoh komik karya Meonk, memulai berbagai petualangan seru bersama SpongeBob SquarePants dari Nickelodeon.

Diciptakan bersama oleh Nickelodeon dan Faza Meonk, seri ini adalah sebuah apresiasi dari anak bangsa untuk serial tv animasi anak-anak nomor satu. SpongeBob SquarePants juga merupakan judul paling populer di kanal YouTube Nickelodeon Bahasa Indonesia, yang diluncurkan pada Juni tahun lalu.

JAKARTA - PT MNC Licensing sebagai agensi lisensi brand-brand ternama, seperti Nickelodeon, meluncurkan seri buku cerita SI JUKI x SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS. Kolaborasi dua tokoh kartun ini dibuat oleh seniman dan penulis Indonesia, Faza Meonk.

Vice President MNC Content & Licensing Shierly Kosasih mengatakan, pihaknya memiliki porsi untuk membawa brand internasional ini menjadi lebih lokal. Namun di sisi lainnya ingin membawa brand lokal ke ranah internasional.

"Pada 2017 saat era kolaborasi, kita juga mendapatkan porsi untuk membawa brand internasional ini menjadi lebih lokal. Dan MNC Licensing juga punya aspirasi untuk membawa kreator lokal ke ranah internasional," katanya dalam konferensi pers, Jumat ( 11/12/2020).

Ia menjelaskan, kolaborasi ini dilakukan dalam proses yang sangat panjang. Sebab, pihaknya harus menemukan kesamaan karakter dengan si sponge kuning tersebut.

"Proses pencarian yang cukup panjang. Jadi tak cuma sekali pemilihan. Kita menemukan DNA yang karakternya sama dengan Spongebob ada Si Juki," jelasnya.

Dalam kolaborasi ini, Si Juki, tokoh komik karya Meonk, memulai berbagai petualangan seru bersama SpongeBob SquarePants dari Nickelodeon. Cerita serial buku ini diciptakan sebagai bentuk apresiasi dari anak bangsa untuk serial TV animasi nomor satu kesukaan anak-anak Indonesia.

Ia berharap, kolaborasi ini dapat memperluas market dari karakter Spongebob. Sebab selama ini karakter si kuning kotak ini sangat identik dengan anak-anak sekali. Padahal penikmat kartun ini rata-rata sudah beranjak dewasa.

"Dengan kolaborasi kita melihat bahwa brand Spongebob bisa jadi lebih besar. Kami ingin membawa ke segmen pasar lebih luas lagi dari anak-anak ke dewasa dan dewasa ke anak-anak," ujarnya. Serial buku cerita ini akan menampilkan berbagai keseruan petualangan Si Juki dan SpongeBob SquarePants di berbagai dunia. Seperti apa kolaborasinya?

Pada Jumat (11/12), MNC Licensing selaku pemegang lisensi animasi Nickelodeon di Indonesia dan kreator serial komik Si Juki, Faza Meonk, merilis seri buku cerita kolaborasi Si Juki dan SpongeBob SquarePants. Dalam serial buku yang satu ini, Si Juki dan SpongeBob SquarePants akan mengarungi berbagai dunia dan bertualang bersama.

Dalam konferensi pers yang diadakan secara daring pada hari yang sama, Faza Meonk dan juga Vice President MNC Contents and Licensing, Shierly Kosasih. Mereka berbagi cerita mengenai proses kolaborasi yang luar biasa ini. Sehingga dapat tercipta sebuah kolaborasi serial buku cerita Si Juki dan SpongeBob Squarepants. Kecocokan Si Juki dan Spongebob Squarepants

Sebagai perpanjangan tangan Nickelodeon di Indonesia, MNC Contents and Licensing bertindak sebagai jembatan antara kreator lokal dan juga Nickelodeon. “Kami kerap mencari talenta lokal yang cocok dengan karakter animasi Nickelodeon dan menyampaikannya kepada Nickelodeon,” kata Shierly.

Sebelum bekerja sama dengan serial Si Juki, Nickelodeon pernah bekerja sama dengan desainer lokal Indonesia, Tities Sapoetra, dan berkolaborasi dengan Spongebob Squarepants pula. Koleksi busana SpongeBob Gold merupakan hasil kolaborasi tersebut dan sempat dipamerkan dalam Plaza Indonesia Men’s Fashion Week 2017.

Terkait kerja sama antara Nickelodeon dan Si Juki, bu Shierly mengaku bahwa ia sudah bertemu beberapa kali dengan Faza, namun baru menjalin kerja sama mulai dari tahun 2018 lalu. “Kami memang mencari karakter lokal yang memiliki kecocokan sifat dengan SpongeBob Squarepants, dan karakter Si Juki punya ‘DNA’ yang sama dengan SpongeBob,” kata Shierly.
  
SpongeBob SquarePants Sebagai Inspirasi Berkarya
  
Faza juga menambahkan mengenai proses kolaborasi ini. Ia berkata bahwa pihak Nickelodeon dan MNC Contents and Licensing semakin tertarik untuk berkolaborasi dengan karakter Si Juki setelah melihat laman Wikipedia dari Si Juki. Di sana, disebutkan bahwa SpongeBob Squarepants telah menjadi salah satu inspirasinya dalam berkarya. Hal ini juga diakui oleh Faza sendiri.
  
“SpongeBob Squarepants adalah salah satu inspirasi saya untuk berkarya,” kata Faza. “Biasanya humor yang disajikan dalam media lainnya sangat spesifik, ada yang hanya dapat dimengerti oleh orang dewasa atau orang yang mengerti pop culture. Tapi, jokes dalam Spongebob memiliki lapisan tersendiri, sehingga baik anak-anak dan orang dewasa bisa tertawa saat melihat SpongeBob.”
  
Karena SpongeBob SquarePants juga adalah karakter kesukaannya, Faza mengaku tidak merasa kesulitan saat mengerjakan proyek kolaborasi ini. “Tidak ada yang susah, karena saya menganggap ini sebagai tantangan yang menyenangkan. Meskipun ada batasan-batasan tertentu dari Nickelodeon, saya tidak merasa kesulitan dan tetap merasa fun,” ujarnya.

Seperti yang telah diberitakan sebelumnya, kolaborasi SpongeBob Squarepants dan Si Juki tertuang dalam seri lima buku cerita Si Juki x SpongeBob Squarepants. Kelima buku cerita ini akan menghadirkan berbagai petualangan Si Juki dan SpongeBob Squarepants di lima dunia yang berbeda.

Lima buku yang terdapat dalam serial ini akan diawali oleh “Petualangan Impian” sebagai buku pertama dalam serial ini. Dalam buku pertama ini, akan dijelaskan mengenai pertemuan pertama Si Juki dan SpongeBob SquarePants dan mengawali petualangan mereka bersama dalam empat buku setelahnya, yaitu “Dunia Prasejarah”, “Makan Besar”, “Balap Bajaj”, dan “Petualangan di Laut”.
  
Mengenai perilisan lima buku ini, Dennis Tan selaku Vice President Brand &amp; Retail Marketing Asia Pacific, ViacomCBS Consumer Products, mengatakan bahwa seri buku ini memungkinkan mereka untuk menghadirkan optimisme dan antusiasme yang tak terbendung dari SpongeBob kepada para penggemar di Indonesia melalui karakter komik terkenal di Indonesia.
  
“Humor dan jalan ceritanya akan sangat menarik bagi siapapun yang merasakan kegembiraan bersama Nickelodeon!” ujar Dennis. “Kami berharap para penggemar juga dapat menikmati seri buku cerita ini seperti halnya kami menikmati proses pembuatan bukunya bersama Faza.”
  
Faza Meonk selaku kreator Si Juki juga mengungkapkan harapannya agar para pembaca dapat menikmati serial buku ini pula.
  
“SpongeBob adalah salah satu tokoh favorit saya sejak kecil. Dan kolaborasi ini seperti sebuah mimpi yang jadi nyata saat saya bisa menghadirkan petualangan SpongeBob dan Si Juki ke dalam lima buku cerita. Semoga semua orang di Indonesia dapat turut merasakan sukacita yang saya rasakan. Dan juga menjadikan seri buku cerita ini sebagai koleksi di rumah masing-masing,” katanya.
  
Merchandise Lainnya

Selain dijadikan lima buku cerita, kolaborasi Si Juki dan SpongeBob SquarePants juga akan tertuang dalam berbagai merchandise lainnya. Mulai dari baju, aksesoris, figurin, dan lain sebagainya. Berbagai produk ini akan tersedia di berbagai toko buku online dan Knick-Knack Store di Tokopedia dan dijual secara terbatas.

Ketika Si Juki dan Spongebob Berteman di Dalam Buku Cerita

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Apa jadinya jika tokoh kartun lokal Indonesia Si Juki bertemu dengan si kocak Spongebob Squarepants? Petualangan mereka hadir dalam lima seri buku cerita kolaborasi antara komikus Faza Meonk dan Nickelodeon.

Seri buku cerita Si Juki x SpongeBob rilis mulai Jumat (11/12) di Tokopedia dan segera tersedia di toko buku. Lima judulnya yakni "Petualangan Impian", "Dunia Prasejarah", "Makan Besar", "Balap Bajaj", dan "Petualangan di Laut".

Bagaimana bisa Si Juki yang berada di darat berjumpa Spongebob yang hidup di dasar laut? Jawabannya bisa didapatkan dengan langsung membaca bukunya. Sebagai bocoran, pada buku pertama Juki terdampar di sebuah pantai asing. Di sanalah dia bertemu dengan SpongeBob SquarePants yang juga bernasib sama.

Mereka berdua memulai petualangan dari tempat terpencil itu hingga ke beberapa lokasi lain. Ada tempat dengan latar era prasejarah, dunia asing penuh makanan, arena balap, hingga perburuan harta karun yang membuat mereka naik kapal bajak laut.

Kreator Si Juki, Faza Meonk, membeberkan proses kreatifnya menggarap seri buku cerita. Dia sangat bersemangat merampungkan proyek tersebut karena Spongebob Squarepants adalah karakter favoritnya sejak masih duduk di bangku sekolah.

Bahkan, Spongebob adalah salah satu inspirasi terbesar Faza dalam berkarya. Menurut dia, cerita Spongebob memiliki lelucon berlapis. Ada kelucuan untuk anak-anak, ada yang cuma dipahami orang dewasa, ada pula untuk penggandrung budaya pop.

"Spongebob menginspirasi saya bikin karakter yang bisa dinikmati semua orang. Dalam kolaborasi ini, saya teringat kalau Spongebob punya tagline imajinasi, karena itu latar cerita ada di dunia imajinasi," tutur Faza.
Tidak sekadar mempertemukan dua karakter, buku cerita Si Juki X Spongebob juga memasukkan unsur-unsur Indonesia sehingga dekat dengan pembaca. Misalnya, makanan ketoprak di buku "Makan Besar" serta bajaj di buku "Balap Bajaj".

Dalam merampungkan lima bukunya, Faza dibantu tiga orang timnya, mulai dari eksplorasi ide cerita sampai pewarnaan. Tentunya, juga dengan evaluasi dari Nickelodeon. Perbincangan tentang kolaborasi sudah dimulai sejak dua tahun silam.

VP MNC Licensing dan MNC Contents Shierly Kosasih selaku kepanjangan tangan Nickelodeon di Indonesia menyampaikan lebih lanjut terkait proses kolaborasi. Semula, kerja sama itu hanya sebatas artwork dan merchandise.

Seirig waktu, Nickelodeon sepakat membuat buku cerita Si Juki dan Spongebob. Shierly senang bisa membawa Spongebob sedekat mungkin dengan audiens Indonesia, bersama karakter lokal populer Si Juki.

"Kami menganggap Juki memiliki DNA yang mirip dengan Spongebob. Tidak semua karakter ketika disatukan akan mengeluarkan mood dan spirit yang sama. Juki dan Spongebob, bisa terasa mereka ini BFF (best friend forever atau sahabat baik)," ungkap Shierly.

Vice President Brand & Retail Marketing Asia Pacific, ViacomCBS Consumer Products Dennis Tan juga sangat menikmati proses pembuatan buku cerita. Dia berharap penggemar Tanah Air bisa merasakan hal yang sama tatkala membaca bukunya.

"Seri buku cerita ini memungkinkan kami menghadirkan optimisme dan antusiasme SpongeBob dalam konteks hyper local. Humor dan jalan ceritanya akan sangat menarik bagi siapapun yang merasakan kegembiraan bersama Nickelodeon," kata dia.

Buku cerita yang diluncurkan dalam Bahasa Indonesia tersebut bisa segera dikoleksi para penggandrung Si Juki maupun Spongebob. Ada juga merchandise seperti pakaian, sepatu, aksesori, dan figurin.
