Nickelodeon GSA Orders 'Spotlight' Season 5

Nickelodeon Germany (Deutschland), Austria (Österreich) and Switzerland (Schweiz) has renewed its hugely popular locally produced cross-media daily TV series Spotlight, which follows the lives of a group of young talented students at theatrical school and their dreams to take the stage, for a fifth season! The news was announced by Laura Abril, Senior Vice President (SVP), head of Viacom International Studios (VIS) Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) during VIS' online presentation to announce the studio's 2020-21 slate.


Since 2016, Spotlight has been following the lives of a group of young talented students at the "Berlin School of Arts", a fictional school that combines artistic education with regular education, as they gradually come closer to their dreams of music and acting careers. The series completed its fourth season during winter 2019. Each season features new songs performed by the cast and guest stars. The series is produced by UFA Serial Drama.

Spotlight is also in the midst of rolling out an extensive consumer products range inspired by the series, including: backpacks, key rings, pens, blocks and pencil cases at drugstore chain Müller; the official "Nickelodeon’s Spotlight" magazine by Egmont Ehapa Media; and Spotlight: Mach dein eigenes Ding, a hands-on book published by COMMUNITY EDITIONS.

Spotlight also extends to digital, allowing fans to access further Spotlight material from their favourite characters on social media platforms, including YouTube, Instagram (@SpotlightDeutsch) and TikTok.

Spotlight is Nickelodeon GSA's locally produced adaptation of Nickelodeon Benelux's successful daily scripted TV series of the same name.

Nickelodeon USA Acquires Rights to Latin American Teen Sci-Fi Thriller 'Dani Who?'

Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to the teen sci-fi thriller Dani Who?, which has been a hit in Latin America, for podcast and TV series adaptations for general market audiences!


Set in a ‘90s Mexican village, Dani Who? is a story of a group of teenagers who formed an inseparable bond after the disappearance of a girl in the town of San Gregorio. Little by little, they discover they have many things in common and that their stories hide a web of secrets they never imagined. As they bond together, they discover they have special abilities and are being watched over by a mysterious corporation.

Dani Who? is a testament to our studios capabilities to create original and versatile content that can be adapted for multi-platforms in different markets,” said Federico Cuervo, Senior Vice President (SVP) and head of ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS). “Dani Who? was a fan favorite in Latin America and we’re proud that this successful series can explore different formats to win over young audiences in the United States.”


Dani Who? (10 episodes) is produced by Viacom International Studios and Mexican powerhouse Argos Comunicación, and premiered on Paramount Channel Latin America in November 2019. The series was Paramount Channel's first original series commission.

Dani Who? follows Nickelodeon successfully making US adaptations of Nickelodeon Latin America's Every Witch Way (Grachi), I An Frankie (Yo Soy Frankie) and Talia in the Kitchen (Toni, La Chef).

VIACOMCBS INTERNATIONAL STUDIOS UNVEILS NEW 2020 SLATE

MIAMI – MAY 22, 2020 – ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) and Juan José Campanella announced its new series, Los Enviados, during the studio’s press event today held virtually. The series, produced by VIS and 100 Bares, the famed director’s production company, is the first project produced under the First Look Deal between VIS and Campanella, announced last year.

Today’s virtual event was hosted by Mexican actress Valeria Vera, and featured executives Pierluigi Gazzolo, President OTT & VIS of VCNI, Federico Cuervo, SVP & Head of VIS Americas, Laura Abril, SVP, Head of VIS EMEAA and Guillermo Borensztein, VP of Sales Contents and Coproduction of VIS Americas. VIS executives shared their vision on the industry, presented upcoming projects and the latest ViacomCBS International Studios news.

One of the highlights during today’s event was the participation of Juan José Campanella, one of the most prominent and prestigious filmmakers with a worldwide career as director, producer and screenwriter for films and series. During his conversation with Vera, Campanella shared exclusive details about Los Enviados, the new series he will direct.

Los Enviados follows the story of two priests on a mission to verify the alleged healer who mysteriously disappears. Their lives, as well as their faith, are pushed to the limit when they discover the psychiatric community on the outskirts of town, who are hiding secrets behind the missing healer.

“Every year, there is an increasing demand for original content on a global scale, and our studio has become one of the leading producers, teaming up with the best strategic partners,” said Federico Cuervo. “We are very excited to announce the development of this series, our first project with the renowned Juan Jose Campanella.”

“We are thrilled to have a multitude of projects in development,” added Laura Abril. “One to highlight would be El Dia Menos Pensado, a new fiction series in partnership with Zeta Studios, the Spanish production company responsible for the global teen sensation, Élite. Written by Cristóbal Garrido (Fariña) and Adolfo Valor (Cuerpo de Élite), we firmly believe this dramedy has all the elements to become an international franchise.”

VIS executives also announced the co-production and distribution agreement with Dynamo for an action thriller that will begin filming in Mexico City in the coming months and the agreement with Nickelodeon to acquire the rights to the sci-fi smash thriller Dani Who? for podcast and series adaptations for general market audiences. Campanella ended his participation by revealing his new project in the works, Outlaw, based on the story of Joaquín Murrieta, the famous outlaw from California, written by Adrian Cruz.

ViacomCBS International Studios Unveils 2020 Slate

Argentine Academy Award winner Juan José Campanella (“The Secret in Their Eyes”) is planning “Outlaw,” a reboot of El Zorro, inspired by his take on the historical figure behind the legend, Joaquín Murrieta, the director announced at an online presentation of Viacom International Studios 2020-21 slate.

Part of his first-look deal with Viacom International Studios, “Outlaw” will be “told with much more realism,” he added.

Campanella also announced further details of drama-thriller series “Los Enviados,” which looks like the first title to go before the cameras from his first-look deal with VIS, announced last May.

Led by Pierluigi Gazzolo, president, Studios and OTT, ViacomCBS Networks International, VIS top executives also used the presentation to announce renewals and deliver an update on a swathe of new titles announced over the last few months.

Murrieta is still portrayed by some sources as a petty horse thief. Campanella, however, is taking a different tack, framing the figure in a broader historical context.

“Murrieta enters in action when California, which was Mexican, is annexed as part of the U.S. [in 1848],” Campanella said.

He added: “Mexican citizens suddenly became foreigners, and begin to be pretty badly treated with punitive taxes and the expropriation of their lands. Murrieta was one of the first Mexicans to rebel against that. He became the first ‘terrorist,’ you might say, in the U.S.”

“Outlaw” is written by Adrián Cruz.

Season 1 of “Los Enviados” will be set in a hamlet in Yucatán, Mexico. “As the saying goes, ‘small village, big hell,” Campanella said.

The series’ protagonists, two priests – one from Spain, the other from Mexico, both schooled in science, medicine and law – are dispatched around the world by the Vatican to investigate alleged miracles. “That can take them to pretty dangerous places,” Campanella said, describing the series as a crime investigation thriller with “mystic and fantasy elements, and highly challenging visuals and plot.”

In further news, VIS is teaming with The Mediapro Studio to produce Season 2 of tween telenovela “Club 57” for Nickelodeon Latin America, said Federico Cuervo, SVP and head of VIS Americas.

It has also renewed for a fifth season Nickelodeon teen soap “Spotlight,” set at a Berlin school of arts and produced by UFA Serial Drama, said Laura Abril, SVP, head of VIS EMEA.

The new titles join a slate that reflects the robust rampup of production at ViacomCBS International Studios in the space of just three years. In 2020, VIS will add more than 25 productions to its slate, making for 2,500 hours produced from its early 2018 launch. It has 45 projects in development, said Gazzolo.

To illustrate VIS’ breadth – in production and distribution – Cuervo screened a short promo of recent releases: One was black comedy “R,” produced by VIS and SVOD platform Claro Video, starring Mauricio Ochmann (“El Clon”) and debuting in Latin America on April 27 on Paramount Network and on May 7 on Claro Video.

“Ana,” by contrast, is a comedy-drama produced by Mexico’s Argos Comunicación and VIS, starring Ana de la Reguera as a semi-made-up version of herself, which premiered on April 20 on Comedy Central, while streaming on PantaYA for the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

Bowing May 20 on Telefe, the Argentine broadcast network, and then on Argentine cable network Cablevision’s Flow SVOD service a day later, “Los internacionales,” also showcased, is a true-facts-based to-catch-a-thief thriller set largely in 2002 Argentina and starring Colombia’s Juan Pablo Shuk and Argentina’s Cecilia Roth.

Also featured in the promo reel, “Homens?” from Brazilian online comedy troupe Porta Dos Fundos, satirizes contemporary male 30something crisis. It first aired on March 18 on Brazil’s Comedy Central, then on Amazon Prime Video.

From Spain, Abril screened a teaser trailer of sentimental dramedy “El día menos pensado,” about a group of people from all walks of life – even Mexico in the case of a down-on-his-luck musician played by Alfonso Herrera, whose featured scene delivered the biggest laugh of the whole VIS presentation – who resort to group therapy to get over the death of their partners. “Elite” producer Zeta Studios will co-produce.

Brief though the videos were, they nail much of VIS’ DNA. Almost all the shows are co-productions, near always with premiere production companies in Latin America and Spain. The series are made by or frame some of the biggest talents and stars in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world; they boast a myriad distribution outlets.

As Guillermo Borensztein, VIS Americas VP of sales contents and co-production, commented, analyzing VIS strategy, VIS has made over 20 co-productions in the last two years and has the “power to define the commercial cycle of contents, whether releasing on our platforms, distributing with third-parties, or on third-party platforms.”

ViacomCBS’ shares jumped early May after first-quarter results announcement on the back of growth in streaming and an expanded carriage deal with YouTube TV.

VIS’ strategy going forward looks, however, to reflect the strategic priorities which ViacomCBS outlined in its February earnings report: Accelerating streaming momentum; “maximizing the power of content;” increasing revenues in distribution, ad sales and content licensing.

Going forward, Borensztein said on Friday, VIS will look to penetrate new territories, such as Africa; continue the sale of formats for U.S. re-versioning, such as YA sci-fi thriller “Dani Who?” to Nickelodeon; and explore new lines of business.

VIS already has its pedal to the metal in Spanish-language content production, Friday’s presentation suggested.

Abril said VIS EMEA had a “multitude of projects in development” and showrunners would soon be announced on a bio-series of Spanish boxer Poli Díaz and on a small-screen adaptation of best-selling Spanish novel “La novia gitana,” produced with Endemol Shine’s Spanish production house Diagonal TV.

Cuervo added that half-hour series “Mentiras pasajeras” was advancing in development with Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar’s El Deseo; and Viacom would soon confirm new series makeovers of classic Paramount movie titles in the wake of the success of “To Catch a Thief.”

Therefore, Nickelodeon Netherlands (Nederland) has announced the exciting news that they have once again partnering with Jantje Beton, an organisation dedicated to providing youth services, to hold the 13th edition of Buitenspeeldag, Nickelodeon Nederland's localised version of Nickelodeon's "Worldwide Day of Play", on Wednesday 10th June 2020 - which will look very different to previous years!


Last year, more than 1,000 local organisations helped more than 100,000 children around the country to play outside. This 13th edition promises to be an historic day due to the current global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic,

This year, according to the guidelines set by RIVM (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu / Netherlands' National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) and the Dutch government, no major play events are able take place. However, Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton will be providing kids and families with lots of tips on how children can play outdoors safely via buitenspeeldag.nl (think of a chalk-drawn race tracks on pavements, skipping, ball games, and much more!). In addition, children and local organizations can also download this year's cool poster on the Buitenspeeldag website so that the whole country can see that it's time to play outside again!

In this way, both Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton will offer a helping hand in their own way in creating games, playgrounds and organising play activities. In the coming weeks Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton will campaign to get as many children as possible to play outside. Like previous years, the Nickelodeon TV channel will "go dark" for a few hours to encourage kids to go outside and play.

During this special edition of Buitenspeeldag, Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton will play together with the Johan Cruyff Foundation and the Krajicek Foundation. Both organisations have been committed to teaching the importance of regular outdoor play and sports for years and support Nickelodeon and Jantje Beton's message wholeheartedly. Cast your minds back to September last year, when Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards, the biggest awards ceremony in children's entertainment landed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the first time ever.


Well, in another first, the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together has been produced virtually.

That means that all the stars, including the event's host Victoria Justice (Victorious, Zoey 101, Fun Size), came together online to bring kids across the world, including in the UAE, the opportunity to watch the fun slimefest on TV after the originally planned Kids' Choice Awards 2020 ceremony has to be cancelled due to the on-going COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

As as voting in Kids' Choice Awards 2020's global categories, fans in the Middle East could also vote for their Favorite Arab Star: Ahmed Al Nasheet, Cynthia Samuel, Hala Al Turk or Thunayyan Khalid.

Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together will be broadcast across the UAE on Sunday, May 24 at 6pm.

As well as the revealing the winners of the kid's favourite TV shows, movies and games, there are performances and appearances from some of the best-loved stars, too.

The line-up includes a special appearance from the cast members of Avengers: Endgame including Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson, as well as other famous faces such as Dwayne Johnson, Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad, Camila Cabello, Ellen DeGeneres and Shawn Mendes, plus the cast members of Stranger Things and of Henry Danger, as well as Tom Kenny, Bill Fagerbakke from the voice cast of SpongeBob SquarePants (سبونجبوب سكويربانتس).

Naturally there is lots of slime – JoJo Siwa and David Dobrik are the unwitting recipients of the gross green stuff – and awards aplenty including a special mention for NBA champion and global icon LeBron James receiving Nickelodeon’s 2020 Generation Change Award, in honor of his commitment to creating real and lasting change through education, with his charity The LeBron James Family Foundation’s groundbreaking I PROMISE School. A $1 Million donation to No Kid Hungry, a national campaign to end childhood hunger in America, in support of those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Time Out Dubai had a quick chat with the award's host Victoria Justice to see what it was like to be part of the first ever virtually produced telecast of the popular kids' award ceremony.

You hosted the first ever virtual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. How does that feel?
It was a huge honour and one I won’t forget. It was such a unique opportunity to host the Kids' Choice Awards from my house, and being the first woman to host the awards alone was really incredible!

So many major worldwide events and shows have been cancelled, it’s quite monumental that the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards found a way to go ahead. Was it more nerve-wracking than a live show?
In some ways, yes, because it’s never been done before. But I started my career with Nickelodeon so it really felt like coming home again. I just wanted to have fun and make sure that the audience was entertained and I think we were able to do that! I really had a blast!

What can kids expect from this new virtually-produced version? Will it have all the same fun, craziness and slime?

Nick Jr. UK & Ireland will premiere Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power!, a brand new Australian-produced short-form series on Monday 1st June 2020! Nick Jr. will air two five-minute episode segments daily, at 4:00pm and 4:05pm, respectively, with both new episodes encoring the same evening from 7:00pm.


Produced by Nickelodeon Australia, Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power! centres around Aussie “unboxing” brothers Calvin (7) and Kaison (4), whose YouTube channel CKN Toys, which was launched in March 2015, boasts over 14 million YouTube subscribers and over 13 billion video views.

“At Nickelodeon we take play seriously”, says Ben Cox, General Manager of Nickelodeon Australia & New Zealand (ANZ). “Play is fun and appealing to our preschool audiences and is also vital to early childhood development, which is why we chose to hero this message in Calvin and Kaison’s Play Power!

“As children play, they develop critical cognitive, emotional, social, and physical skills. These skills children set the stage for future learning and success from the school classroom to the workplace,” says Catherine Sewell, Play Specialist.


"Stars of the popular channel, seven-year-old Calvin and his four-year-old brother Kaison have joined forces with Nickelodeon to create a short-form story-driven TV series that follows the duo on their play-ventures with best friend ROBO-G.

"Tapping into the popular unscripted, spontaneous and fun narrative style that has garnered CKN Toys a global following, each episode will see Calvin and Kaison embark on a play-venture in their Kid Cave, which is interrupted by a series of challenges including giant cakes, missing friends, playful monsters and out of control toys. Nickelodeon’s 33rd annual Kids’ Choice Awards looked different from previous shows. The show shifted from a traditional awards ceremony filmed in front of kids, families, and celebs alike, to one that was produced remotely with virtual celebrity cameos and at-home musical performances. In another mark of nimble production, it featured commercial creative that reflected the new normal during coronavirus.

The COVID-19 crisis has caused a mass shuffle in TV advertising that’s required brand marketers to sidestep their current ad campaigns to make room for culturally sensitive content with updated messaging. When it was announced in April that the KCAs would air in early May, following being postponed from March, Viacom Velocity quickly approached the show’s sponsors with strategies to update their campaigns, where necessary, enabling the brands to continue to support the show and promote their messages.

“Everything about this year’s Kids’ Choice Awards was focused on providing an entertaining experience for kids and families in the comfort of their own homes, from the homes of all their favorite celebrities and heroes. It was much more intimate, since we were adhering to social distancing guidelines, but also lighthearted and relatable for our fans,” says April L McKenzie, Vice President (VP) of Activation at Velocity. “Our advertisers wanted to ensure their campaigns provided maximum impact while aligning with the current reality. We worked swiftly to reimagine the content and adjust any creative developed for the original live show that was planned for March.”

For Velocity, the work is indicative of the remote production that’s become their new normal. The studio remains fully operational, with creative and production teams working collaboratively to find creative ways to create and distribute content.

Among the partners who updated their campaigns were Mattel Barbie and Milk Processor Education Program (MilkPEP). George Sholley, VP of Production at Velocity, shared, “Working with each brand, we were able to edit some of the shots or add in new pieces of content to ensure the creative reflected the present day situation, while maintaining their core messages.”

“We’re nimble by nature,” explains Lisa Bull, VP of Activation at Velocity. “For Barbie and MilkPEP specifically, we needed to adjust the creative to reflect the current environment for our audience. Together, with our partners, we were able to move quickly to deliver amazing creative with timely messages.”

Updated Action Shots for MilkPEP

MilkPEP worked with Velocity to create a custom campaign that included 2-minute and 30-second cuts. Filmed in February, they featured Olympic-hopeful skateboarder Bryce Wettstein performing choreographed tricks and dance moves with kid-dancers and professional BMX riders at a skate park.

“Less than a month ago, you wouldn’t have to think twice about creating and airing an ad that showed kids skateboarding together and having fun. But, times have clearly changed,” explains Justin Kovics, VP and Group Creative Director at Velocity. “We had to ensure the message our partners wanted to express wasn’t tone deaf in the current climate of social distancing, especially because kids are a huge part of the Kids’ Choice Awards’ audience.”

Velocity re-cut the original spots, weaving together a series of single-person shots to replace the group scenes. The final moments of the ad encouraged viewers, “Wherever you are, whatever you do…milk it.”


“We are grateful for our partnership with Nickelodeon and agency Campbell Ewald,” said MilkPEP CEO Yin Woon Rani. “We were impressed with how quickly we could make changes to the spot to reflect social distancing and represent a positive example of how to reflect that behavior to this important audience.”

A Custom Message to Fans for Mattel

Prior to COVID-19, the in-house branded content studio created custom content for Mattel Barbie®. The initial creative centered on a young girl, showcasing her talents, and featured a group of kids dancing together to a performance by 13-year-old DJ Livia.

Given that schools are currently closed and social distancing measures are in place, the content had the potential to be confusing or alarming to kids. So, Velocity used remote capture to record a message from DJ Livia in which she explained that the footage was shot previously and encouraged her fans to stay indoors.

“We’re using music to remind girls that they can be anything,” DJ Livia says in the video. She then went on to remind fans that “play is never canceled.”


“We were really able to lean in and leverage the power of DJ Livia as an influencer and a real girl realizing her passion, to send a positive message to audiences tuning into the awards show, while also making sure the brand’s original message didn’t get lost,” says Jared Elliott, VP and Group Creative Director at Velocity.

According to Mattel, the updated creative enabled the brand to reinforce its message at a critical time. “The Barbie brand believes in play, even during these difficult times,” says Aimee London, Senior Director of Marketing at Mattel. “Working with DJ Livia to pivot our approach by celebrating at home, allowed us to show girls they can be anything, while also celebrating imagination and social connection.”

As brands continue to adjust to the “new normal” caused by coronavirus, Velocity continues to find creative ways to adapt and connect with audiences—even when they can’t be in the same room together. From remote production capabilities, to crafting relevant and meaningful content on the fly, the creative team continues to bring brand ideas into being.

“The shop is not closed by any stretch of the imagination,” says Sholley. “We are able to make things happen remotely, and we are especially well-equipped for this moment.”

Comprehensive Deal Introduces 14 Additional ViacomCBS Cable Networks to YouTube TV, Including BET, Comedy Central, MTV and Nickelodeon


NEW YORK--ViacomCBS (NASDAQ: VIACA, VIAC) and Google today announced a comprehensive, multi-year distribution agreement to deliver more content from ViacomCBS’ leading portfolio of news, entertainment and sports networks for YouTube TV subscribers. In addition to featuring continued carriage of CBS broadcast stations, CBS Sports Network, Pop TV, Smithsonian Channel, and The CW, the expanded agreement introduces 14 ViacomCBS channels to the live TV and on-demand subscription service.

BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 will launch on YouTube TV this summer, providing more than two million subscribers with access to some of the most popular cable brands. BET Her, MTV2, Nick Jr., NickToons, TeenNick and MTV Classic will also launch on YouTube TV at a later date.

The deal also includes a continued commitment to distribute ViacomCBS’ premium subscription services, including SHOWTIME, on YouTube TV, as well as an extended partnership on the broader YouTube platforms.

Comedy Central, BET, Nickelodeon coming to YouTube TV

Amid the coronavirus crisis, ViacomCBS managed a rare bit of good news: Comedy Central, BET, Nickelodeon, MTV and the Paramount Network are coming to YouTube TV.

The deal, announced Thursday, validates a key motivation to bring the two companies together: America’s most watched TV network, CBS, is strong enough to help lift the weaker Viacom channels when it comes to distribution on pay-TV systems.

Google Inc.'s YouTube TV launched three years ago with the CBS network as an inaugural partner, but the $49.99 a month streaming service didn’t see the need to have MTV, Nickelodeon and the other Viacom channels — until now.

The two companies announced an expanded distribution deal, that kicks in this summer and extends distribution for CBS, Showtime, CW and Pop and also adds 14 Viacom channels. YouTube TV, which has about 2 million subscribers and targets young adults who don’t have cable or satellite TV.

The added distribution “is a clear proof point for the Viacom-CBS combination,” ViacomCBS Chief Executive Bob Bakish said Thursday morning on a conference call with analysts to discuss first-quarter earnings. “ViacomCBS is a resilient company ... and our content is in demand.”

The merger of CBS and Viacom was completed in early December, and its stock has since cratered, falling 60%. But the company’s first-quarter earnings of $516 million, or 84 cents a share, exceeded Wall Street’s expectations. That was down from earnings of $1.96 billion, or $3.20 a share, a year ago.

Revenue of $6.7 billion, down 6% compared with last year, also exceeded estimates. (Last year, CBS televised the Super Bowl in the first quarter, which drove advertising revenue.)

Adjusted earnings were $1.13 a share. Analysts were expecting the company to post earnings of 95 cents a share.

The stronger-than-expected performance led to a rally of ViacomCBS’ shares Thursday. The stock jumped 15% to more than $17 a share in early morning trading.

The company’s Los Angeles-based Paramount Pictures unit turned in a solid quarter. Even though the studio was forced to postpone the release of its highly anticipated “Quiet Place II,” it benefited from “Sonic the Hedgehog,” which brought in $300 million worldwide. Studio revenue increased 11% to $730 million in the quarter.

Licensing revenue grew 18% to $442 million because the studio was cranking out content for other companies. For example, Paramount sold “The Lovebirds” to Netflix in the quarter.

The company said it was aggressively cutting costs, including imposing layoffs and offering buyouts, to achieve cost-savings from the merger.

Meanwhile, analysts have been concerned about a severe drop in advertising revenue because many businesses are shut down to slow the spread of the coronavirus. On Wednesday, Fox Corp. Chief Executive Lachlan Murdoch startled analysts by saying that local TV station advertising revenue was on pace to be 50% lower in the current April through June period, compared with a year ago.

Five categories of advertisers — automakers, movie studios, restaurants, retail stores and travel companies — have slashed their advertising.

“It’s not as bad as what Fox said, that’s for sure, but it’s not pretty either,” Bakish said, noting the ViacomCBS networks have seen glimmers of hope that advertising will pick up this summer. CBS is expecting the Professional Golf Assn. to resume its season in June.

ViacomCBS and its controlling shareholder Shari Redstone have faced scrutiny over the merits of the combination. Some investors have blasted the merger, because it led to a steep decline in the value of CBS, the stronger of the two companies. The two companies were worth more than $30 billion last year, but now the combined company is worth about $10 billion.

A sweeping class action lawsuit was filed earlier this year in Delaware Chancery Court on behalf of two Pennsylvania institutional investors. The suit contends the deal — to reunite the companies after 13 years apart — was forced to protect the fortunes of the Redstone family and its investment vehicle National Amusements Inc., not rank-and-file CBS shareholders. The Redstone family controls 80% of the voting stock of the combined ViacomCBS, and Redstone now presides over ViacomCBS as its chairwoman.

Every episode of The Daily Show, kids’ favorite Nickelodeon series, and the upcoming third season of Yellowstone are just some of many ViacomCBS favorites that will soon be available on YouTube TV.

As well, YouTube TV and broader YouTube platforms will keep distributing ViacomCBS’ premium subscription services, including SHOWTIME.

The move also showcases ViacomCBS’ commitment to maximizing the value of its content and ensuring that audiences are able to watch the content across platforms and price points.

YouTube TV, which costs $49.99 per month, includes live and on-demand content from more than 70 networks.
