A piece of unused music from Nickelodeon's Harvey Beaks animated series. Orchestrated and Conducted by Steve Bartek!

From Ego Plum's official Tumblr blog:

"Ego Plum’s Absurdity Suite

Occasionally when I work on a series, I write a few pieces of music that aren’t necessarily for specific scenes. These are more like mood pieces that encapsulate the overall feel and character of the show. Here’s an unused piece of music from Carl Greenblatt’s Harvey Beaks show I composed with no clear intention in mind. I was attempting to write as the love child of Carl Stalling (Looney Tunes) and Bernard Herrmann (Psycho/Vertigo). It was just me having fun at the orchestra’s expense (not to mention Nickelodeon’s expense). I love that the studio and our wonderful producer afforded us the freedom to experiment like this and make our little show as good as we could make it.

A special shout-out to the genius orchestrator Steve Bartek, who had his way with my melodies on the second half (at my request) and turned this in to something even more absurd than what I hoped for!

Paramount To Film Live-Action 'Dora The Explorer' Movie In Queensland, Australia

$

After a last-ditch effort to stop the movie being produced in another country, Paramount’s live action children’s film Dora The Explorer is to be filmed in Queensland, Australia.

The move, reports Variety, highlights the intense competition for so-called runaway productions, and the efforts being made to further increase Australia’s financial incentives for film production.

The decision was announced on Sunday, March 18 by the Premier of Queensland, Annastacia Palaszczuk. “Yes, we did it. Dora comes to Queensland,” Palaszczuk said. That is a reference to how each episode of Nickelodeon's beloved animated preschool series ends with the song “We Did It.” The new film sees Dora as a teenager navigating the world with her cousin Diego.

Dora The Explorer will be filmed on the Gold Coast’s Sound Stage 9 at Village Roadshow Studios. It is to be produced through the Paramount Players division of Paramount Pictures and will be directed by James Bobin (The Muppets, Alice Through the Looking Glass), with a script from Storks and Neighbors director Nick Stoller. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes label and his partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing the flick. The film's cast has not been set.

Dora the Explorer will receive a wide release in North America on Friday, August 2, 2019.

But it was nearly another story. On Friday, March 16, Australia’s federal government refused to give the film an additional tax break, beyond the country’s 16.5% production offset scheme. That appeared to mean that the film would not be shot in Australia. Palaszczuk accused federal treasurer Scott Morrison of bias towards other states and of costing jobs in her state.

Instead, after asking Paramount for a further 48 hours to negotiate, Queensland agreed to increase the incentive it will pay to the production. Palaszczuk declined to detail the amount, though local media sources have put the figure at over $6.17 million (A$8 million).

Australia has several features that attract footloose or runaway productions, including well-developed infrastructure, English-language crews and varied locations. But, even after the weakening of the Australian dollar at the end of the commodities boom, it also has high costs.

In recent weeks there have been cries of alarm that the flow of incoming movie shoots had all but dried up. And both Screen Queensland and Ausfilm have lobbied government to raise the incentive for all major films from 16.5% to 30%.

So far, the federal funding has been on a case-by-case basis. Recent Hollywood pictures that have been granted additional, discretionary funding from the federal government, and which then shot in Australia, include Thor: Ragnarok and Aquaman.

“The decision to provide competitive incentives to lure the production came down to a single criteria: creating jobs,” said Palaszczuk. “Over the past three years my government has committed $23.1 million (A$30 million) attracting movie makers to Queensland through our Production Attraction Fund, gaining more than $270 million (A$350 million) of direct expenditure in our state.”

Below is Screen Queensland's official press release announcing the news, via createsend.com:

> Sunday 18 March 2018

Screen Queensland is thrilled to share today's announcement from the Queensland Premier and Minister for Trade, The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk.

MEDIA RELEASE

Premier and Minister for Trade
The Honourable Annastacia Palaszczuk

YES! WE DID IT: DORA COMES TO QUEENSLAND!

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced Queensland’s next big blockbuster will be the live-action version of Dora The Explorer from Paramount Pictures.

The Premier said the decision to provide competitive incentives to lure the production came down to a single criteria: creating jobs.

“This isn’t only for our film industry workers it’s for all the other businesses we know benefit from big productions in Queensland,” the Premier said.

“Over the past three years my government has committed $30 million attracting movie makers to Queensland through our Production Attraction Fund, gaining more than $350 million of direct expenditure in our State.

“We will keep on pushing for screen jobs for our local crews and creatives and for productions that inject hundreds of millions of dollars into our economy and take our creative talent and our stunning Queensland locations, to screens around the world.”

Recent productions include:

- Aquaman, filmed in 2017, estimated to have spent more than $100M in Queensland creating 2100 jobs.

- Thor: Ragnarok, released in October 2017, employed more than 1000 Queensland cast and crew, and injected $145.2 million into the Queensland economy

- The Chinese production At Last showcased a range of Queensland locations, and provided approximately 200 jobs and injected $10.8M into the local economy. It follows the success of previous Queensland Chinese co-productions Guardians of the Tomb (previously known as The Nest 3D) and Bait 3D.

- This Dora will be a live action update of the much-loved Nikelodeon animated series, in which Dora is now a teenager navigating the world with her cousin Diego.

Each episode of the animated series ended with the song ‘We Did It’.

After the deal was secured late yesterday the Premier felt like singing ‘We Did It’ herself.

“We could not be more thrilled to be bringing Dora to Queensland and to be able to deliver Queensland for our film,” said Lee Rosenthal, President of Physical Production for Paramount Pictures.

“In Queensland, we are able to get outstanding crew, stages and a variety of jungle topography and city backdrops in essentially one place.”

Dora will be filmed on the Gold Coast’s $15.5 million Sound Stage 9 at Village Roadshow Studios and came after the Premier’s US trade mission in February.

The film comes from the Paramount Players division of Paramount Pictures and will be directed by James Bobin whose films include The Muppets (2011), Muppets Most Wanted (2014) and Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016).

It’s due for release in August 2019.

Paramount’s ‘Dora The Explorer’ Movie Set For Australia Shoot After Tax Break Concession

Paramount’s live-action Dora The Explorer movie will shoot in Australia after a last-minute tax break concession from local authorities.

The movie’s presence in Australia was cast in doubt on Friday when Australian Treasurer Scott Morrison rejected Paramount’s request for a one-off increase from the standard 16.5 percent tax break to 30 percent. However, Australia’s second largest state Queensland agreed this morning to top up the the Australian government’s tax break for the film. One local media report pegs the revised deal to lure Dora to Queensland at around $8m.

The James Bobin (Alice Through The Looking Glass)-directed live-action feature is an update of the hit Nickelodeon cartoon and is due to follow a teenage Dora as she navigates the world with her cousin Diego. Storks director Nick Stoller is writing the script, and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes label and his partners Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing. Cast has not been set. The movie is slated for an August 2019 release.

“We could not be more thrilled to be bringing Dora to Queensland and to be able to deliver Queensland for our film,” said Lee Rosenthal, President of Physical Production for Paramount Pictures. “In Queensland, we are able to get outstanding crew, stages and a variety of jungle topography and city backdrops in essentially one place.” The film will shoot on the Gold Coast’s $15.5 million Sound Stage 9 at Village Roadshow Studios with production expected to begin late spring/early summer.

“Over the past three years my government has committed $30 million attracting movie makers to Queensland through our Production Attraction Fund, gaining more than $350 million of direct expenditure in our State,” said Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk. “We will keep on pushing for screen jobs for our local crews and creatives and for productions that inject hundreds of millions of dollars into our economy and take our creative talent and our stunning Queensland locations, to screens around the world.”

Sizeable recent productions to shoot in Queensland include DC’s Aquaman, which is estimated to have spent more than $100m in Queensland creating more than 2000 jobs, Thor: Ragnarok and Chinese production At Last, which followed other Australian-Chinese productions such Guardians Of The Tomb (previously known as The Nest 3D) and Bait 3D.

10-year-old Perryville, Missouri native Paul Montgomery recently received the chance of a lifetime -- an all-expense paid trip to appear in an episode of Nickelodeon's hit musical comedy series School of Rock!

"He received $500 spending cash and then he got paid for being on-set," Brandy Lindsey said. "He was only in a three-second clip, but all expenses were paid except for food."

Montgomery won by watching Nickelodeon's popular comedy adventure series Hunter Street last Spring, but wasn't allowed to reveal his newfound stardom until Sunday, March 11, the on-air date of his appearance in season three, episode 17, "We Gotta Get Outta This Place."

"You had to find the hidden letter, and at the end of the week enter those letters, and he was chosen," Lindsey said.

Lindsey said Montgomery was the secondary choice because the initial winner's parents didn't agree to the contest rules.

During Montgomery's on-screen time his role was to "run around" during the episode's "fire drill," explained Lindsay.

For the show's taping, Lindsey and Montgomery made their all-expense paid trip to Hollywood, California, last July.

Congrats Paul! :) Fans can check out Paul's appearance on School of Rock episode "We Gotta Get Outta This Place" on Nickelodeon, Nick.com and the Nick App!

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Co-creator Kevin Eastman Talks About How He Started A Independent Pop-Culture Dynasty

$
0
0
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Cocreator Kevin Eastman Went for a Modest Underground Comics Career. He Started an Independent Pop-Culture Dynasty Instead.

You can't create a comics dynasty on purpose. In fact, it seems helpful not to try. Spider-Man, Superman, Batman—all were cranked out by middle-aged day-jobbers on deadline. They were intended to fill a bit of newsprint and then make way for the next fantastical character, not to permanently lodge in the pop-culture pantheon.

In the eighties, Kevin Eastman set out for a modest career in underground comics, which is a reasonable goal when you've co-created a book about anthropomorphic turtles who learned martial arts from a talking rat and who hang out in a sewer with a TV reporter. Imagining that this premise might birth an enduring multimedia phenomenon would not have been reasonable, to put it mildly. But that's what happened.

Eastman and co-creator Peter Laird revolutionized the comics industry by ducking around the superhero monopolies and self-publishing in black-and-white with wild success at a time when this was unheard of. They still own the characters to this day, after all the movies and cartoons, the toys and costumes—and the Turtles are still in print, now in color and published by IDW.

Eastman is one of dozens of creators, also including indie stars like Brandon Graham and mainstream fixtures like Walt and Louise Simonson, who headed to the Raleigh Convention Center for NC Comicon: Oak City this weekend. Indy Week reached Eastman at his home studio in San Diego, where he was working on sketches for a Batman-TMNT crossover. He discussed how Heavy Metal magazine inspired the Turtles before the Turtles bought him Heavy Metal, getting sued over the word "cowabunga" by Buffalo Bob from Howdy Doody, and his favorite bits of Turtle-abilia.

INDY: You were a reader of self-published comics before you took self-publishing to a new level with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. How did you discover independent comics at a time when they were less easy to find than they are now?

KEVIN EASTMAN: I grew up with what was in the spinner racks at the local drug store, but then along came Heavy Metal magazine. In 1977, I bought the first issue. Heavy Metal published some amazing European talents, but they also published American underground comics. I really flipped out over Richard Corben, who's definitely my number-two influence after Jack Kirby. It was such a fantastic and bizarre style, it pushed and stretched the imagination in so many ways. In my search for Corben material, I went to The Million Year Picnic in Harvard Square and they had this massive underground comics selection. Most important, I found Dave Sims's Aardvark-Vanaheim, publishing Cerebus. Reprints of underground comics from the sixties and seventies, coupled with what the new guys like Dave Sim were doing, throw in a dash of Heavy Metal—that really pushed me toward what I wanted to do in comics.

You bought Heavy Metal in 1991 and edited it for fifteen years, and you're still the publisher. Was that like a childhood dream come true?

Oh my goodness, yeah. I joke that if you think about it, my discovery of Heavy Metal in 1977 led me to self-publishing, and then when Peter and I created the Turtles together, because we owned and controlled all things Turtles, we also profited from it. Heavy Metal helped me create the Turtles, so I could then buy Heavy Metal.

When you and Peter Laird started publishing the Turtles comics, did you have any inkling they might become multimedia pop-culture icons, or did it just seem like this totally niche and crazy thing you were doing?

Oh yeah, we definitely knew. [Laughs] No, of course not. If you look at the first issue, it was a complete story. We didn't think we'd sell that many copies or do another issue. We just deeply loved the idea and had so much fun doing the kind of comic book we wanted to read. We thought it was a fun homage and parody of comics, something we had to get out of our system. When it started selling, people at comic shops and fans started writing us saying, when are you going to do issue two? It came out in January 1985, and we made enough money—I think we sold about fifteen thousand copies—to pay rent and draw comics full-time. I point to 1985 as the year the dream came true, this lifelong fantasy we used to tell our parents about, drawing comic books for a living, and they look at you with that mortified look, like, oh my goodness, we're going to have one of those kids who never moves out of the basement. By the time Hollywood came knocking, at the top of the black-and-white-comics boom, we were selling about a hundred thousand copies an issue, which was mind-blowing.

You didn't make up the word "cowabunga," but you might as well have. How did that phrase enter the Turtles' lexicon; how did you make up their slang?

It really came out of the animated series. If you look at the comics, there were kind of funky pop-culture references, like Casey Jones saying "Goongala Goongala," which is something Tarzan said whenever he wanted an elephant or a lion to do something. I remember watching Beach Blanket Bingo and these Saturday morning matinee movies with this California surfer-dude thing going on. Growing up in the woods in Maine, it was about as alien as you could imagine. We just riffed on that. "Cowabunga" evolved with David Wise, the writer of the early animated episodes, and became the catchphrase that caught on. We got sued by Buffalo Bob from Howdy Doody.

Right, I read that's where the term first came from?

Yeah, he said we basically stole it. I had never seen it, it was before my time. We were like, no, we stole it from Annette Funicello! I don't know if it had transferred into public domain or common usage, but the case was dismissed, let's put it that way.

A lot of our readers will know the Turtles from the movies and the cartoon more than from the comics. How are the comics different?

The original comics were really written for Peter and myself, intended for an older audience—though neither of us are huge fans of really gory stuff and swearing—but it had a bit more edge to it than what mainstream comics were doing. When we adapted them into the first cartoon series, we knew this was for a much younger audience and a number of things were softened. The first cover where I painted the Turtles in color, they all had red bandanas. When they wanted to do them as toys and cartoons, they said, can we come up with a way to tell them apart better? Peter came up with the idea of different-colored bandanas, which I thought was awesome.

The kids version reached a much wider audience. It was years and years until a lot of those initial fans of the cartoons discovered the comics. We kind of got them at a young age when they were buying the toys and watching the cartoon, and when they got older and still had passion for the Turtles, they discovered this older-audience Turtles. It's so humbling and cool when we do conventions and see parents who were fans of the original series, and their kids have now discovered the Turtles through Nickelodeon's cartoon series, all dressed up together.

With the incredible amount of Turtles stuff out there, do you have any favorite toys or properties?

Absolutely. The first live-action movie, directed by Steve Barron with incredible costumes by Jim Henson, I thought was a perfect blend of the original black-and-white series and the humor of the animated series. And the first round of toys in 1988. I remember when Peter and I stumbled into a Kay-Bee Toys in Springfield, Massachusetts, and saw them for the first time. They would do Turtles as different characters, and the Star Trek Turtles—I was a huge Star Trek fan growing up, so I loved that. And of course, nothing could take away from what Peter and I originally did, working in the same room passing pages back and forth, because that's where it all started.

On A Roll: PAW Patrol's Surprising Connection With Canada's Newfoundland

Jennifer Dodge went from a linguistics degree at MUN to an executive gig in children's TV

Newfoundland, Canada: Most of the province's parents with at least one young child are familiar with PAW Patrol, the beloved CG-animated preschool show where a tween and a squad of talking dogs regularly save their town from disaster and the mayor has a purse chicken.

But what they may not know is that the hit show, which was just awarded three Canadian Screen Awards, has a strong Newfoundland connection thanks to Jennifer Dodge, who is the Executive Vice-President (EVP) at Spin Master Entertainment, the Toronto-based company that produces PAW Patrol.

Dodge's time with the show goes back to 2009, when she joined Spin Master and helped launch its entertainment group.

"We were looking for an exciting action-adventure type of series for preschoolers," Dodge told told CBC News of the birth of PAW Patrol, which she worked on with a team at Spin Master and show creator Keith Chapman, who also developed Bob the Builder.

Started from the bottom, now she's here

Dodge was an executive producer on the show for its first three seasons, which is a long way up from her start in the entertainment industry.

She was writing her final exams at Memorial University, where she studied linguistics, when a fellow Newfoundlander working in craft services in Toronto called her up and convinced her to give the industry a try after graduation, Dodge told the St. John's Morning Show on Friday from Toronto.

Jennifer Dodge is executive vice-president of entertainment at Spin Master Entertainment. (CNW Group/Spin Master Corp.)

A three-week stint answering phones for a company now called DHX Media — a Halifax-based company that purchased Charlie Brown and Strawberry Shortcake for $345 million US in 2017 — eventually led to a position as the head of development and production, Dodge said.

A MUN linguistics degree may not seem the most obvious starting point to a career as a children's television executive, but that ability to work one's way up through the ranks is one of the great things about the entertainment industry, she said.

"Really that's the only way to do it. Nobody graduates from any degree and then ends up being an executive producer the next week. We all start at the bottom."

Canada is at the top of children's entertainment worldwide

PAW Patrol and Spin Master Entertainment are part of a vital industry in children's entertainment that is recognized across the globe, Dodge said.

"Worldwide, Canada is really known as one of the premier producers, creators, and distributors in children's entertainment, especially in animation, and we have a long legacy of that," she said. "When we go to international markets, Canadian producers are known by the broadcasters worldwide and in the U.S."

Some of that work was recently rewarded at the Canadian Screen Awards, where PAW Patrol won for best preschool program or series; best sound, animation; and best direction, animation.

The awards were announced at the non-broadcast Gala Honouring Excellence in Creative Fiction Storytelling in Toronto on March 7.

PAW Patrol also leads the field in another increasingly important part of the children's entertainment industry: toy sales.

PAW Patrol had one of the Top 10 bestselling toys in the United States in January, according to the NPD Group, and this month Spin Master purchased American toy maker Gund for $79.1 million US.

"It's a very big business," Dodge said of toys based on children's entertainment. "PAW Patrol is no exception. In fact, it's the biggest business that we do right now."

And parents with PAW-obsessed preschoolers can expect to see the show's toys on holiday wish lists for years to come. The show's fifth season is currently airing on Nickelodeon, and seasons six and seven, along with two specials and a feature film, are also in the works.

Nickelodeon Slimes OMD Execs To Celebrate Launch Of 'SLIME CUP' Season 3

To celebrate the announcement of SLIME CUP’s third season, Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand visited global media agency OMD's Australian offices on Friday 16th March 2018 to present what’s in store for the next season!

While they were there, they bestowed the ultimate honour of slime on Yvette Mayer, Managing Director (MD) of OMD Sydney; and Daniel Tray, screen trading manager (pictured above).

Over the next week, Nickelodeon will visit UM, Wavemaker, MCN, Ikon, DenstuX, and Carat to perform a sliming on whoever the organisation deems fit, so now’s the time for that revenge on your boss!

Nickelodeon has perfected its top-secret slime recipe, BTW, resulting in a perfect, sticky slime.

However, sliming is the ultimate honour from Nickelodeon, only bestowed upon an elite few including superstar celebrities at Nickelodeon's Kids’ Choice Awards, held every year in March. And this time, it’s performing it in honour of returning series SLIME CUP.

Returning for its third year, Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand’s locally-produced series will be heading to more audition locations than ever before after announcing a new strategic partnership with QICGRE.

In partnership with QICGRE, Nickelodeon will bring SLIME CUP live auditions to brand new locations in three states across Australia for the first time: Watergardens Town Centre in Victoria, Hyperdome in Queensland and Westpoint in New South Wales. The search for TV stars begins on Saturday 7th April 2018.

During the live audition periods, Nickelodeon will be taking over these three centres with two weeks of holiday activities for the whole family including craft villages, character meet-and-greets and holiday activities for all.

Ben Cox, General Manager (GM) and Vice President (VP) of Nickelodeon for Australia and New Zealand, said kids who had previously come a long way for SLIME CUP will now have somewhere closer to home for live auditions.

“Over the past two years we’ve had thousands of kids from across Australia and New Zealand audition for the series, so this year we’re putting our cameras on the ground in brand new locations,” he said.

“Our partnership with QICGRE allows us to reach more families in even more locations than ever before; not only for the SLIME CUP auditions, but also during the two weeks of family entertainment surrounding these times.”

Premiering on Friday 29th June 2018 at 5.30pm (AEDT), the six-episode series will have a new format: 12 talented teams of two will face off against each other in challenging heats before the top three teams meet in the finals.

The 12 teams will be selected from the live auditions as well as from online video auditions.

Kids aged nine to 13 from across Australia and New Zealand will be able to audition for the series, either at one of the live audition locations or by uploading a video audition via the website, slimecup.com.au.
