Nickelodeon and CBS Studios Announce Kate Mulgrew’s Return as Captain Janeway in Upcoming Animated Series Star Trek: Prodigy

Share it: @Nickelodeon @NickAnimation @StarTrekProdigy @StarTrek @CBSTVStudios

BURBANK, Calif.--October 08, 2020--Nickelodeon and CBS Studios today announced that Kate Mulgrew (Star Trek: Voyager) will reprise her role as Captain Kathryn Janeway in Nickelodeon’s all-new animated series Star Trek: Prodigy. The news was revealed today as a surprise announcement during the Star Trek Universe virtual panel at New York Comic Con. Additional casting news will be announced in the coming months.

Kate Mulgrew stated, “I have invested every scintilla of my being in Captain Janeway, and I can’t wait to endow her with nuance that I never did before in Star Trek: Prodigy. How thrilling to be able to introduce to these young minds an idea that has elevated the world for decades. To be at the helm again is going to be deeply gratifying in a new way for me.”

Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman said, “Captain Janeway was held to a different standard than her predecessors. She was asked to embody an inhuman level of perfection in order to be accepted as ‘good enough’ by the doubters, but showed them all what it means to be truly outstanding. We can think of no better captain to inspire the next generation of dreamers on Nickelodeon, than she.”

“Kate’s portrayal of Captain Janeway is truly iconic, and has resonated with a global audience for many years,” said Ramsey Naito, President, Nickelodeon Animation. “We can’t wait to see her bring this character to life in a whole new way, while continuing to be an inspiration for both new and loyal fans.”

Developed by Emmy® Award winners Kevin and Dan Hageman (Trollhunters and Ninjago) and overseen for Nickelodeon by Naito, Star Trek: Prodigy follows a group of lawless teens who discover a derelict Starfleet ship and use it to search for adventure, meaning and salvation. The CG-animated series will debut exclusively on Nickelodeon in 2021 for a new generation of fans.

Star Trek: Prodigy is from CBS’ Eye Animation Productions, CBS Studios’ new animation arm; Secret Hideout; and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman, Heather Kadin, Katie Krentz, Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth will serve as executive producers alongside co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman. Ben Hibon will direct, co-executive produce and serve as the creative lead of the all-new animated series. Aaron Baiers will also serve as co-executive producer with Mac Middleton as a producer. Production of Star Trek: Prodigy is overseen for Nickelodeon by Claudia Spinelli, Senior Vice President, Animation Development and Kelley Gardner, Vice President, Current Series Animation.

Star Trek: Prodigy joins the expanding “Star Trek” franchise for ViacomCBS as the first Star Trek series aimed at younger audiences for Nickelodeon. The Star Trek Universe on CBS All Access currently includes hit original series Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, the upcoming Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and the development of a Section 31-based series with Michelle Yeoh.

Update (10/10) - Alex Kurtzman, the executive producer in charge of Star Trek on TV recently talked in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter podcast Top 5 about keeping the news of Kate Mulgrew joining the cast of Star Trek: Prodigy a secret for a year!:

Janeway is part of Prodigy for a “wonderful reason”:

Kurtzman revealed that the decision to bring back Janeway has been in place for a year and it “blows his mind” it hasn’t leaked. He also talked about how they came to the decision to have Mulgrew join Prodigy:

"When you’re looking at legacy characters you have to have a very specific reason to bring them back. Without revealing too many details, Kevin and Dan [Hageman] came in with a pitch that just blew the doors off the place. There was a really clear wonderful reason to bring Janeway into the story."

Prodigy is specifically aimed at bringing in younger fans. The EP talked about how this has been a challenge for the franchise:

"I think one of the things that Star Trek has not done as effectively over time is bring in new people, particularly much younger people, and I don’t see any reason why that this amazing story that has existed for 55 years, that is so about everything that we are dealing with in our lives right now, cannot be shared and enjoyed by younger generations."

Kurtzman also talked about how he is already planning the next decade of Star Trek television. You can ready more on TrekMovie.com.

Meet Aaron Waltke — one of the creative minds behind Star Trek: Prodigy

Some might argue that we’re living in a new Golden Age of Star Trek. Most Treksperts would argue that the original era of greatness spanned from when The Original Series cast was in theaters, and The Next Generation was on television. But now we’re entering an era where there will be four live-action Trek shows airing, as two animated shows are available as well. This seems pretty special too.

One of the shows in development is Star Trek: Prodigy. While still shrouded in secrecy, we know a few things, like the fact that this show will be geared to a younger audience and will air on Nickelodeon — not on CBS All Access. The show will be directed by Ben Hibon, and will star Captain Kathryn Janeway herself — Kate Mulgrew.

One might imagine that the creative team behind the scenes at Prodigy are hard at work, creating this unique take on the Trek vision. Among the talented team that co-showrunners Kevin and Dan Hageman have assembled is screenwriter Aaron Waltke, who might be the biggest Trekkie on the staff. Waltke knows the films, series, and stories up and down, and brings his Trek knowledge to the table as the team formulate this new series.

We caught up with Waltke and asked him about his background, what goes into writing an animated show, and about Star Trek: Prodigy too.

You’re originally from Indiana. How did you get from the Hoosier State to Hollywood?

I grew up in Greenwood, a quiet suburb on the outskirts of Indianapolis in a rural farming community — my neighborhood was literally between two cornfields. When I was younger, our internet was dial-up and cable television was a luxury, so my friends and I were forced to entertain ourselves — mostly by keeping the local Blockbuster video permanently out of stock of every sci-fi, fantasy, and horror film they had, and endlessly debating on the playground whether Frodo would have survived if Lord of the Rings was set in the Dune universe. Eventually, we started using my parents’ camcorder to begin telling stories of our own.

Once I arrived at college at Indiana University, I focused my studies on Telecommunications, English and Theatre. Curiously, Bloomington is the future birthplace of Captain Janeway and alma mater of Star Trek: Voyager creator Jeri Taylor — it’s also where Next Generation writer Lee Sheldon was teaching at the time. I spent my time absorbing as much as I could and began writing and directing short films, performing sketch comedy, as well as producing documentaries for PBS.

While there, some friends created an animated show for our college TV network and they asked if I wanted to write a few episodes for them. They later sold that idea (and a several others) to Mondo Media as a digital series in the early days of YouTube, and I was lucky enough to continue in a staff writer capacity. Shortly thereafter we all moved to Los Angeles. It was around then a comedian pal of mine, Sandy Danto, was working as a writer/producer for National Lampoon, who were best known for Animal House and the Vacation films.

They needed someone who could write, direct, and edit comedy shorts for their online comedy and college television network, and I fit the bill nicely. I usually worked in development, taking meetings and writing screenplays on the side until I was able to sustain a living writing full-time. A few screenplays and award-winning television shows later, and now I get to write for Star Trek!

You were part of a comedy troupe in college. What turned you toward working behind the camera instead of in front, and did performing in front of an audience inform your writing?

There was a period early on where I thought I might break into the industry selling a show with my sketch friends, so we could imitate our heroes from SNL, Monty Python, SCTV, Kids in the Hall, etc. We performed regularly at iOWest, UCB, and the Comedy Store, had a number of short films accepted into the Los Angeles Comedy Shorts Festival, and our team was in the finals of the LA Comedy Festival two years in a row. Breaking in that way is still somewhat of a viable career path for some, but these days it seems to require building an online presence first… and a lot of luck.

That said, I always fancied myself as more of a Michael Palin type — someone who could hold their own, but enjoyed the creative process far more than the acting side — though being onstage absolutely informed my screenwriting. I learned the value of what a great performance can bring to any line of dialogue, just as my years in the editing bay helped me understand how to be concise with a scene or cover transitions on the page. If you want to learn how to tell a story, I highly recommend familiarizing yourself in all aspects of it. The experience was immeasurably valuable to me.

I’ve heard theater folks say that TV and movie people are often jealous because theater gives instant feedback. Does that apply for what you do?

It’s both exhilarating and terrifying. In film and television, at least there is a safety net of rewrites and the editing room if something truly isn’t working the way it was meant to on the page. In theatre, especially comedy, either the audience is with you or against you, and there’s no taking it back.

It also forces you to appreciate everyone’s unique voices and teaches you how to broaden your own. Sometimes the most intellectual and perfectly crafted line will get a polite chuckle, while someone screaming about a magic pie will tear the house down with laughter. It’s a valuable lesson in playing to the crowd.

You’ve written for Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, Trollhunters, Teen Titans Go, and Unikitty! Are there other shows/projects which are in developement that you can talk about?

The curious thing about creating film and television, especially animation, is that it takes a very long time to make them — between writing the first draft of a script and its final release on the screen, it often takes years! As such, there are a number of projects I’m working on that are currently in development that are very exciting, but I’m not allowed to talk about them because they haven’t been officially announced yet.

That said, Star Trek: Prodigy is one of my favorite things I’ve ever worked on. I’m a producer and writer for the animated series, and I was brought onboard the Prodigy after serving as a co-executive producer on Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, because I’d collaborated with Dan and Kevin Hageman on Trollhunters a few years ago. As a hardcore Trek fan, it honestly felt less like writing a script and more like breathing.

I’ve internalized so much lore from its myriad series over the years that I instinctively know how the Heisenberg compensator in a transporter works and can easily write an essay comparing the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition and the Great Material Continuum to ancient Egyptian cosmology. Now I get to tell my own stories in that universe, and the opportunity to contribute to such a rich mythology that’s been so influential in my life has been a tremendous honor.

Explain what it’s like to work in the “writers’ room.” Do you come to the table with ideas in hand, or does someone set the tone for the show and you guys figure it out verbally?

Every room is slightly different, and your role in the writing process can change depending on whether you are a showrunner, running the room, or a staff writer. Typically, a room starts with a pilot written by the showrunner and a pitch bible with the basics laid out of what the series could be (and what the network bought).

Once the writing staff has familiarized themselves with the material, there’s a period of brainstorming called “blue sky” where there are no wrong answers, and it’s just answering the question what if…? Over and over again. That’s where you determine the groundwork for who your characters are, what sorts of stories we can tell, and some specifics of what the general arc of the season and the series is and will be.

Once you have a loose idea of the show and where it’s going, you’ll start to break episodes of the show. On Tales of Arcadia and Star Trek, we would typically discuss the content of the episode together as a writing staff and break down the scenes and act breaks with increasing detail until there’s enough bulletpoints to create an outline.

This process can be difficult, but in my experience I’ve been lucky to have rooms of extremely smart people who are great at building together. In many ways, it’s like a game of slow motion dramatic improv, with the option of going back and revising earlier ideas if you encounter a problem or come up with something better later.

The outline is then sent out for notes from the producers, the studio and the network, and then once approved is turned over to a writer to type up a first draft. The showrunner gives notes and may do some rewriting themselves. Then there is a table read, where any last ideas or spot checks can be addressed before it’s sent out for feedback. Rinse and repeat!

Is writing for a CGI show different from line/hand drawn animation? Do you have different constraints for either medium?

There are definitely differences, mostly when it comes to the production pipeline, which in turn can affect the writing. In CGI, it’s more costly to create character models, props and assets, but once you’ve created them, they exist forever on a server and can be used for set construction or repurposing just as you might in a live action shoot.

For that reason, finding creative ways to utilize characters, ships, locations and props to their fullest over multiple episodes tends to be easier on the production. This also makes serialization slightly more budget friendly in the 3D animated space, since you are building stories over the course of a season rather than episodically. There are also extra steps involving lighting and layout that take longer to get right.

In 2D animation, you also have to be careful not to break the bank, but in different ways. Things like crowd scenes can be a nightmare, because every single character has to be hand drawn. Rotating camera angles with the background in focus can be a chore to do for the same reason.

I don’t have a preference for one medium over the other — it really depends on the story you are hoping to tell and how you want to tell it. I consider it a privilege I’ve been lucky enough to work in both.

You’ve been writing for TV for a while now. How has the industry changed? Have the streaming wars opened up more opportunities?

I would say the biggest thing that’s come with the streaming revolution is the number of platforms out there. There’s certainly a lot more opportunities than there were, say, ten years ago, and many networks are willing to take bigger and bolder swings to cut through the noise and gain an audience. It’s my sincere hope this leads to more unique and diverse voices out there, from those we haven’t heard yet.

As for me, I have some live action and animated projects in the works that I’m very excited about… I can’t wait to share them with the world!

Tell us about Trek. What was your “first contact” with the franchise?

One of my earliest memories is sitting on the couch with my father, watching the saucer of the U.S.S. Enterprise separate from the secondary hull as the sweeping fanfare played — it all felt very exciting, but I didn’t entirely know why. Years later, I realized I was watching the pilot of Star Trek: The Next Generation as it premiered live way back on September 28th, 1987. It’s not an overstatement that Star Trek has been a part of my life since the beginning, and had a profound influence on my sensibilities as a storyteller.

My local FOX affiliate would air reruns of TNG and Deep Space Nine back to back and in order every weekday when I got home from school, and I would tape them on VHS so I could binge watch them all over and over again, before we even had a name for that activity. The continuity between series and season-long arcs felt so rewarding, and I spent nights wondering about the rules of Vic Fontaine’s holoprogram and whether Tasha Yar was still alive in the mirror universe.

Writing for Prodigy must be exciting. Have you had to go back and watch the prior shows and movies to get up to speed?

When I joined Star Trek: Prodigy, it was a lot of fun doing a deep dive into the last fifty years of the franchise in search of inspiration, especially with every film and television iteration available on demand. My personal mission working on the show was to always instill a sense of wonder, optimism, and adventure — what I remember so fondly experiencing the shows during my own childhood and adolescence. I was also a bit obsessed with getting my treknobabble right — it’s essentially a second language, and there is a lot of it to pull from.

What can fans expect from the new series?

There isn’t a lot I’m allowed to say… but it’s been exhilarating to make a series that honors classic Trek for legacy fans like myself, but also provides an entry point for new audiences to be introduced to the world of the Federation and its aspirations for an idealistic future, even when facing adversity. And as I mentioned before, my family is from the same Indiana town as Kathryn Janeway — writing the return of our beloved Voyager captain feels oddly iconic, like a homecoming for me. And we hope to create something both young and old can watch together… just as I once did with my dad all those many years ago.

SpongeBob Guests Stars in New Horror Movie 'Come Play'

SpongeBob SquarePants is set to star in his third theatrical movie, Sponge on the Run, debuting on Netflix internationally on November 5 and on Paramount+ in the U.S. early next year. However, the Nickelodeon superstar is also set to make a special appearance in another movie!

With its catchy chorus and silly seafaring narrator, the theme song for SpongeBob SquarePants is instantly recognisable. Set in the underwater town of Bikini Bottom, the series follows a happy-go-lucky yellow sea sponge, who works as a fry cook at the fast-food restaurant. He also gets caught up in the antics of his friends - pink starfish Patrick Star, the clarinet-loving Squidward Tentacles, and the fast-talking squirrel Sandy Cheeks.

But from the opening moments of horror movie Come Play, which features the plucky animated sponge quite a bit, it becomes clear that in this context, SpongeBob is so much more than a means of wholesome entertainment.

Oliver (Azhy Robertson), the protagonist of Come Play, is a young boy with autism who absolutely loves SpongeBob. He lives with his mother and father (Gillian Jacobs and John Gallagher Jr.), whose relationship is quite strained. Coupled with the fact that Oliver is nonverbal and solely communicates via an app on his phone, the family dynamics in the home are complicated, to say the least.

Thankfully, however, Oliver is able to escape to the world of Bikini Bottom often, streaming the show on his iPad or phone. At times, he even hums the show’s theme song in order to calm himself down. But unfortunately, a terrifying monster named Larry exists behind the screens of his devices.

The subject of an e-book called Misunderstood Monsters, Larry is only able to come to life when someone reads and finishes his story. But with Oliver growing increasingly isolated from family and classmates, Larry soon begins terrorizing Oliver and his family.

Director Jacob Chase conducted an enormous amount of research for Oliver’s character

Chase, who also wrote the film’s script, told Insider that it was no accident that the film features SpongeBob so prominently.

“It started honestly from research and learning how many of these kids found TV shows that they really connected to, that they’d watch over and over,” the director explained. “It became interesting to watch how parents would communicate with their kids using these shows sometimes.”

For Oliver, SpongeBob isn’t just a means of escape - he also uses it to communicate. In one scene, trying to make amends with a classmate, Oliver plays a clip of Squidward attempting to apologise to SpongeBob. And during a pivotal moment towards the end of Come Play, Oliver’s mother hums the SpongeBob theme song in order to calm him down.

“I love SpongeBob myself as well, but it’s very popular within the autism community,” Chase said. “At the same time, I see a lot of Oliver in SpongeBob. I mean, they both are very well-meaning people. They both see the best in those around them.

“It’s a character that I think Oliver probably learned something from, and we can all probably learn something from,” he added.

Chase also revealed that he and Robertson, who plays Oliver, “did so much research and homework” to prepare for the film, including shadowing kids on the spectrum.

The director added that it was important for Robertson to surround himself “with all of these amazing kids on the spectrum, and families, and speech therapists. We really tried to go above and beyond to make [Robertson] feel comfortable and to make the character feel real.”

Chase also received direct feedback from a person on the spectrum, who was once non-verbal.

“There’s this young man named Sam, who’s on the autism spectrum, and who was actually non-verbal when he was Oliver’s age,” Chase said. “And I had him read the script and give me notes and stuff. So we really tried to make it feel as authentic and sensitive as possible.”

The film doesn’t shy away from showing the more challenging parts of Oliver’s disorder. When Oliver’s mother invites a group of his classmates over to their home for a sleepover, an overwhelmed Oliver moans and rubs his knuckles together in order to soothe himself. And during Larry’s attacks on his family, Oliver is unable to remain quiet, often humming a few bars of the theme song to SpongeBob.

“When you’ve met one kid on the spectrum, you’ve sort of only met one kid on the spectrum. Everyone’s so different,” Chase said of developing Oliver’s character. “So it was about finding…the specificities of the character that we were going to use for Oliver.”

Come Play was developed from Chase’s short film, Larry, but Oliver was inspired by Chase’s wife’s work in the autism community.

While Come Play features a much more complex storyline, some elements (and one desolate setting) have carried over from Chase’s previous work. In his 2017 short film, Larry, the director found his villain.

“It kind of introduced the idea of this Larry monster, the fact that he wants a friend, but not much else. And so really it was starting from the ground up with the feature film,” he explained. “When I was expanding the character of Larry and what he could do, and how he reaches you, it became clear that the most interesting people for this to affect are people that really need this technology to help them communicate with each other.”

According to Chase, he’d been wanting to tell a story about a “young kid on the autism spectrum who’s non-verbal.”

“My wife works with kids on the spectrum. So I had sort of had a window into this world for a few years, and had really grown to love the community and understand so much about the people that are part of it,” he told Insider.

“So really it was marrying those two ideas together in this perfect way of like, people who need technology to communicate, and a monster that is trying to take over your technology and get you.”

Chase said that they auditioned numerous children who were autistic, but ended up choosing Robertson, who isn’t on the spectrum

For Chase, it was important to the director that he not only represented the autism community in his script with an accurate portrayal, but he also wanted to cast an actor who also lived with the disorder. But the task wasn’t easy.

“Very early on in the casting process, we saw a bunch of kids on the spectrum,” Chase explained, noting that the actors ranged from neurologically atypical and typical. Ultimately, though, they decided to go with Robertson, who’d been recommended to Chase by Stephen Spielberg.

“I think once you work with Azhy and you see his performance and how in touch he is, with being able to access those tears and that emotion, it just became so clear that he was the amazing young actor for this role,” Chase said. “It was just hard to say no to him.”

For Chase, it was Robertson’s depth of feeling and commitment that made him the perfect fit for the role.

“He has so much empathy for people that aren’t exactly like him. And that was really important when looking for the actor,” Chase said. “Oliver is a character who is so well-meaning. He believes in the best in people, he has no guile. He’s got so much more to him.”

Throughout the film, Oliver reaches several developmental milestones - all while trying to protect his family and friends from Larry

Chase told Insider that ultimately he didn’t want to lose sight of the fact that Come Play is, at its core, a horror film.

As Larry grows stronger, he increases his attacks on Oliver and his family, cornering Oliver’s dad in an empty parking lot, and even choking one of Oliver’s friends. But despite the terror taking over his life, Oliver is actually able to become closer to his parents.

“In a horror movie, you want people to be terrified and you want these characters to be going through these really sort of horrible experiences,” Chase explained. “You always feel bad as a writer, what you’re doing to these characters. But at the same time, this situation, this experience is ultimately what’s bringing this family together, admittedly in a sort of messed up way.”

Chase was also adamant that it’s not a movie “about” autism, despite centering a character with the disorder.

“Oliver being autistic is something that came about because of my experience with the community,” Chase said. “I really wanted to have a movie with a character at the centre who has autism, but it’s not a movie about him having autism. That’s just one of the many facets of who he is and what the movie is [about].”

SpongeBob also made another unlikely cameo in a movie earlier this year: SNL star Pete Davidson's The King of Staten Island.

Come Play premieres in theatres Friday. Watch the trailer below:

PAW Patrol: Adventure Play Helps Save the Day at the Mayborn Museum

Waco, Texas - Friday, October 30 - Kids and families can now play and save the day with the heroic PAW Patrol pups, at the brand-new PAW Patrol: Adventure Play exhibit at the Mayborn Museum at Baylor University, running now through Monday, January 18, 2021. Based on Nickelodeon’s hit CG-animated preschool series PAW Patrol (produced by Spin Master Entertainment), this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grownups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment.

Please note: Due to the on-going COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, facial coverings are required for all visitors aged two and up. Gaiters, face shields, bandanas, scarves, and masks with valves are not suitable face coverings and not permitted in Baylor University buildings. No exceptions. Click here for more information.

Families will visit Adventure Bay with a group of eight rescue pups. Each pup is inspired by a real-world job like fire fighter (firedog Marshall), police officer (police pup Chase), construction worker (Rubble), fearless pilot (Skye) and more. Just as the heroic pups, who believe "no job is too big, no pup is too small," work together to protect the community on the TV show, families work together to save the day with a can-do attitude at the museum. In the process, kids learn about different jobs within a community and how those real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy.

Each of the pups has special skills, gadgets and vehicles to help them on their rescue missions. In the exhibit, families are invited to pop on a pup pack containing their own imaginary tools and check out the lay of the land from the lookout tower. They can head to Jake’s Mountain and scope things out near the snowy slide to see if anyone is in trouble. They can also board the PAW Patroller, push buttons, and drive it up the mountain to help Rubble and Everest rescue a snowboarder stuck in the snow. Those with a taste for foodie adventures can whip up tasty treats in Porter’s Café and help Adventure Bay win the Tallest Cake Competition by stacking cake layers as high as they can. Families can also cruise Adventure Bay aboard the Sea Patroller, steering it to rescue baby seagulls and turtles.

The hands-on, immersive PAW Patrol: Adventure Play exhibit is a fun way for the whole family to learn bravery and heroism, with exciting stories. The whole family will learn how to combine their skills to problem-solve together and save the day.

For more information and to purchase tickets to visit PAW Patrol: Adventure Play at the Glazer Children’s Museum, visit https://www.baylor.edu/mayborn/index.php?id=932031

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a nonprofit committed to creating extraordinary family learning experiences across the arts, sciences, and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families.

Watch Jamie Lynn Spears and Her 'Zoey 101' Co-Stars Revive Their Iconic Theme Song

Are you ready? Jamie Lynn Spears reunited with her Zoey 101 co-stars by releasing a music video of the show's remixed theme song.

Pacific Coast Academy is back in session!

Jamie Lynn Spears finally reunited with her Zoey 101 co-stars on Tuesday, Oct. 27, when she debuted a new music video of the show's remixed theme song.

The 29-year-old actress turned the "Follow Me (Zoey 101)" song reveal into a big event by bringing back favorite PCA students Chase Matthews, Quinn Pensky, Michael Barret and Logan Reese—that would be actors Sean Flynn, Erin Sanders, Chris Massey and Matthew Underwood, respectively.

Also joining the show-stopping ensemble were A-list influencers JoJo Siwa, Sofia Reyes, Dixie D'Amelio and Noah Beck, who played themselves auditioning to be characters in a very meta Zoey 101, directed by Gigi Gorgeous. Filmed on Sept. 29 at a "secret location," the casting call-themed music video ended with a confetti-filled dance party, where Dixie and Noah locked lips as Quinn and Logan.

Jamie Lynn spoke to Ryan Seacrest ahead of the premiere, telling him why the song is meant to tide fans over until the full-on TV reboot of the Nickelodeon show in 2021.

She said, "2020 was a crazy year. We'd been focusing on the reboot and giving it to the fans at the beginning of the year. And then with everything that happened, we were like, 'Well let's figure out a way that we can safely give them something.' And we figured why don't we give them a song?"

Jamie Lynn originally wrote and recorded the "Follow Me" theme with big sis Britney Spears in 2004, but a lot has happened since then. She wanted to update the lyrics with "little tweaks." Jamie Lynn explained, "Obviously, when I was 12, I was probably experiencing a different season in life, so I wanted to rewrite it a little bit."

It's no surprise that Jamie Lynn got her superstar sister's stamp of approval on the new version. "Obviously, she and the other co-writers gave it the nod and OK for us to go on and make it something for today's generation," the mom of two continued. "This is all rooted in the brilliance of my sister."

The original lyrics include, "I'm just another kinda girl/ And you wanna see my world/ So come and run away." In comparison, the reimagining goes, "You know I'll always be your girl/ Together we can see the world/ Come on let's run away."

Jamie Lynn told Nylon earlier this month that the new tune is "reminiscent of that time, but also the modern Zoey," adding, "Who would Zoey be today? What would she sound like? This hits it right on the head, especially for where I'm going with everything. And not just for Zoey, but for me, too."

She said the conversations have gotten "serious" about developing a full-on reboot of the show. She explained, "Obviously we want to meet her as an adult now, and I do think it should be a show for young adults."

As for where the show picks up, Jamie Lynn revealed to Ryan that they're in the creative part of development right now, figuring out where Zoey is in life.

"We have heard some pretty crazy twists and turns," she teased. "I'm telling you there's plenty of surprises up our sleeve."

Listen to the new song above!

Spears then entered into a deal for her own scripted series, which became Zoey 101, about a high school student who attends boarding school in Southern California.

Spears portrayed the titular character, who, along with her classmates at Pacific Coast Academy (affectionately known as PCA), lives out the teenage fantasy of being surrounded by friends and no parents to speak of. Among the most popular Nick shows of the time, Zoey 101 aired for four seasons on the network.

The series is coming back for a revival

Over the past several years, revivals and reboots have become more and more common in Hollywood. Spears first broached the idea of a Zoey 101 revival in 2020. After she was reunited with some of her co-stars during an episode of the revived All That, the idea came together to become a reality.

“I think we are finally at a place creatively where we’ve found a good spot,” Spears told RADIO.COM in October 2020. “So now it’s just the business side making things really happen. But it’s full-on happening. We’re pushing forward. It’s just a matter of timing,” she finished, citing a possible 2021 debut.

Her character had a romantic interest in Chase

Among those who joined Spears during the recent cast reunions is Sean Flynn, who portrayed Chase Matthews. Chase and Zoey quickly become friends, but he has a crush on her from the onset. Both date other people throughout the show, but in the Zoey 101 Season 3 finale cliffhanger, she learns of his feelings.

In the fourth (and finale season), the two are separated as Chase is stuck at a boarding school in England (where he ended up after chasing Zoey there). Zoey dates James but realizes she’s in love with Chase, and they get finally get together in the penultimate episode. The series ends with Zoey and Chase as a couple.

Spears compared their ‘will they, won’t they’ vibe to ‘Friends’

When asked about how she sees the relationship playing out in the revival, Spears said, “Obviously, in the beginning, we can’t have all of our character’s hopes and wishes happen, or else no one’s going to watch episode 2. I think there still definitely has to be that back and forth with Zoey and Chase, like Ross and Rachel.”

She continued. “But I would think on the last episode of Zoey [101] ever — you know, in a perfect world, Zoey and Chase would walk off into the sunset together, and have a beautiful family and a beautiful life,” Spears said of an eventual finale. “I think that’s very important to the show and to the fans.”

'The Legend of Korra' Shines in Re:Anime's Impressive Live-Action Teaser

The Legend of Korra has been on the minds of many this year thanks to its cultural comeback. Its move to Netflix brought millions of eyes old and new to the show, and fans around the world were sucked back into the series' charm. Of course, that means the fandom at large has been theorizing new ways to bring Korra back into the spotlight, and one group did that with a stunning live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon hit.

Over on Twitter, the production crew Re:Anime decided it was time to tackle The Legend of Korra. The group posted a teaser earlier today that shows its vision for the series. You can check out the video above and decide whether you think this take on Korra does the Avatar justice.

As you can see, the video begins easily enough with a woman playing Korra. The costume looks spot-on to the one found in the show, and its handmade touches make it all the more authentic. The actor Katrina Rosita even has her hair styled after Korra, so I give this look two thumbs up.

The teaser continues with Korra going through her training mantra, and that pushes her to bend all of the elements. She begins by pulling water from the air before freezing it into a barrier of sorts. She moves to fire before pulling earth from the ground. Finally, she works with air despite Korra's trouble with the element, so fans can see how Korra would work in a live-action space.

Clearly, this adaptation feels more natural than the one Hollywood did with Avatar: The Last Airbender, which Korra is a spin-off from, years ago, and fans are thrilled with how authentic it feels. In fact, many netizens say they hope Netflix's live-action plans follows in line with this teaser, so the company might want to hit up Re:Anime for a consultation on their upcoming live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series ASAP.

What do you think of this live-action teaser? Does it do The Legend of Korra justice or...? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section below!

Keke Palmer is doing her part to get the youths "off TikTok" and to the polls.

The True Jackson, VP and Hustlers star released a new PSA music video for a song titled "Actually Vote" ahead of Election Day. The song, written by Finneas O'Connell, Dear Evan Hansen's Pasek and Paul, and Kaleena Zanders, urges young would-be voters to, well, actually vote for Joe Biden in the next five days.

"Young people like to talk that big talk/Young people are the biggest voting bloc/You can only make a change if you check that damn box," Palmer sings.

The video also features cameos from Ilana Glazer, Bella Thorne, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Julianne Moore, as Palmer's friends and relatives who are equally fed up with "that clown politician running his mouth on my damn television," and wraps up with captions advising voters, "At this point, don't mail it, drop it off. Or vote in person."

This video joins numerous other efforts by celebrities to get out the vote this year, from cast reunions to, um, other methods. Palmer also hosted Nickelodeon's Nick News: Kids Pick the President special this week, which was spammed by adult Trump supporters who apparently have nothing better to do. You can watch the special in full here: http://bit.ly/nicknewskpp20

In case you weren't aware, Election Day is this Tuesday, Nov. 3; be sure to check and follow your state's requirements for returning your ballot to ensure it is counted.

You can watch the full video above.
