BURBANK, Calif.–Aug. 31, 2020–Family, friendship and fashionable fun drive Nickelodeon’s brand-new animated preschool series, Made by Maddie (formerly Fashion Ally), premiering Sunday, Sept. 13, at 11 a.m. (ET/PT) on the Nick Jr. channel. Created by Paula Rosenthal and produced by Silvergate Media (Sunny Day, Peter Rabbit, The Octonauts, Hilda), the series (22 half-hour episodes) follows 8-year-old Maddie in New York City, as she uses her imagination and design ingenuity to turn every problem into a positive with the perfect fashion fix. Made by Maddie will continue to air regularly Sundays at 11 a.m.(ET/PT) on the Nick Jr. channel.

Throughout the season, Made by Maddie will feature guest voice appearances by: Karamo Brown (Queer Eye); Rhyon Nicole Brown (Empire); Danny Burstein (Broadway’s Moulin Rouge!); David Burtka (Professional Chef); Monét X Change (RuPaul’s Drag Race); Joey Fatone (*NSYNC); Griffin Robert Faulkner (Raising Dion); Nina Garcia (Project Runway); Joy Lynn Jacobs (The Blacklist); Claudia Morcate-Martin (Seneca); Wanya Morris (Boyz II Men); Christine Pedi (Steven Universe); Christiani Pitts (Broadway’s King Kong); Al Roker (TODAY); D’Angelo Russell (Minnesota Timberwolves); Horatio Sanz (Black Monday); and Nico Tortorella (Younger).

Made by Maddie centers on Maddie (Alyssa Cheatham), a quick-thinking little girl with a big personality and a huge heart, who has a passion for fashion. Maddie finds design inspiration around every corner and her big ideas couldn’t become a reality without the love and support of her aspirational and talented fashion designer mom, Dee (Patina Miller), and her super cool and upbeat musician dad, Rashad (James Monroe Iglehart), along with the assistance of friends and neighbors, including kind, animal-loving best friend, Jada (Sophia Torres), and the twins—rule-following Harper (Amanda Dressel) and fearless Hudson (Ames McNamara)—who are always up for adventure. Maddie’s creative thinking and dazzling designs are a reflection of the bustling, colorful city of New York and its residents. Maddie confidently embraces her own unique style, celebrates individuality, treats everyone with kindness, and encourages others to take risks and be themselves.

In the series premiere, “If the Glue Fits/Mini Me DJ,” Maddie gets her hands stuck to a pair of shoes Dee designed. Once she finally gets the shoes unstuck, she has to come up with a redesign to save the day. Then, Maddie, Dee, and her assistant Dustin design an outfit for DJ Fierce, a famous DJ. They scour the city for the perfect materials, but when a misunderstanding leads to an outfit mix-up, Maddie will have to get creative with a fashion fix.

Following the series premiere of Made by Maddie, NickJr.com and the Nick Jr. App will feature short-form content and full-length episodes. Episodes will also be available on Nick Jr. On Demand and Download-To-Own services.

Production of Made by Maddie for Nickelodeon Animation Studio is overseen by Eryk Casemiro, Senior Vice President, Nickelodeon Preschool.

Latin American trailer:

A brand new 2D-animated comedy for six to 11-year-olds, Dorg Van Dango (52 x 11') follows the adventures of Dorg, a regular teenager growing up in the town of Normill. But life takes a wild turn when four magical beings - THE MAGICALS - escape from Area 52 and crash-land in his back yard! Dorg takes them under his wing and disguises them as normal teenagers—but his new gang of best friends are anything but normal. Jet the cool unicorn, RD the goofy alien, Yooki the spooky ghost, and Patronella the weird witch all try to help Dorg navigate teenage life. Whenever he has a problem or chore, they’re always quick to offer a magical shortcut, but it’s not long before their magic gets out of control and things escalate in unexpected and hilarious ways. When the gang try to use their powers to undo the chaos, they only make more magical mayhem, leaving it up to Dorg to figure out a solution and save the day - often learning a thing or two about life and friendship along the way.

"The world of Dorg Van Dango is really hilarious and quirky," said Josh Scherba, President, DHX Media. "What kid wouldn't want a super-cool unicorn, a curious alien, an ancient witch and an eerie ghost as his secret, new best friends? When these escapees from Area 51 look to 'normal kid' Dorg Van Dango for help, things get crazy. Alongside the team at Cartoon Saloon, we've created something really fun and special here, and we're confident Nickelodeon's international audience is going to love following the adventures of Dorg and his unusual new friends."

"We are thrilled to be partnering with DHX and Cartoon Saloon on Dorg Van Dango. The vibrant, fun, fresh look of the series and unique stories of friendship, are a perfect fit for Nickelodeon and we look forward to introducing Dorg and the Magicals to our audience internationally," said Layla Lewis, SVP Global Acquisitions and Partnerships, Nickelodeon.

"I want to thank the very clever people at Nickelodeon for joining Cartoon Saloon and our wonderful colleagues at DHX Media on this journey to bring Dorg and his friends to an international audience," said Paul Young, CEO of Cartoon Saloon. "Our Emmy-winning comedy writer, Nick Murphy, has been leading a team of Irish and Canadian writers to create scripts that have left me crying laughing. Our creative team of Fabian Erlinghauser, from Cartoon Saloon, and Matt Ferguson, from DHX Media, are preparing a show that has a very colourful, original look. Something fresh for a new generation of kids out there. We're all very excited!"

Dorg Van Dango is based on an original idea by Fabian Erlinghäuser (Song of the Sea, Moone Boy) and Nora Twomey (The Breadwinner, The Secret of Kells) and is developed and produced with assistance from Fís Éirean/Screen Ireland and Creative Europe. Cartoon Saloon handles writing, designs, storyboards and post-production as well as distribution in Ireland and the UK, and DHX Media handles voice records, character and background builds, animation, and distribution rest-of-world.

Below is Nickelodeon Deutschland's official presse release announcing their Autumn 2020 highlights!

NooBees

'Rugrats' Composer Mark Mothersbaugh Reveals Near-Fatal Experience With COVID-19

Mark Mothersbaugh has revealed that COVID-19 (coronavirus) came within inches of taking his life earlier this year. The Devo co-founder and acclaimed film and TV composer sat down with the Los Angeles Times to talk about his battle with the viral illness, which he was diagnosed with this May. According to Mothersbaugh, he was placed on a ventilator twice at Cedars-Sinai hospital to help him breathe as COVID began to attack his lungs. Then came the fever dreams and delusions.

Devo cofounder Mark Mothersbaugh was on a ventilator for nearly two weeks: “For anybody that’s doubting whether the coronavirus is real, it’s really real.” (Robert Gauthier/Los Angeles Times)

Mothersbaugh — best-known for composing the music for the 13-year-run of Nickelodeon animated series Rugrats, its three related theatrical films, and it's spin-off, All Grown Up! (the character design for Chuckie Finster on Rugrats was also based on him!) - imagined he was visiting one of his favorite book stores and while there, he was attacked with a brick.

“I felt blood from being hit. I was handcuffed to a parking deck downtown. I had this whole elaborate story of how these kids sold me to an ambulance company that then got some sort of a payment for delivering COVID patients to their ICUs. I totally believed it,” Mothersbaugh, 70, tells the Times. At the time, the imaginary vicious beating in downtown Los Angeles is why he thought he had been admitted to the hospital.

The composer says he temperature was holding steady at 103 degrees and rising. Once placed on a ventilator, he had another delusion where he wrote an entire album and subsequently performed it on a tour. "I wrote a whole new Devo album and put together a whole live show," Mothersbaugh adds. "We were standing on top of these projects, which were growing somehow."

Rising to prominence of the front man and co-founder of Devo — you know their hit song "Whip It"— he soon turned his eyes to composing while still with the band. His first credit came with Neil Young's "Human Highway" in 1982. Since then, he's dozens several A-list projects.

In the early '90s, Mothersbaugh came up with the catchy theme song for Nickelodeon's Rugrats and followed it up by doing the same thing for Rocket Power. His music could also be heard on Santo Bugito and Clifford the Big Red Dog. He also wrote a new theme song for the original Felix the Cat show, provided some music for Pee-wee's Playhouse, and wrote the theme song for the Super Mario World TV series for DIC Entertainment in 1991.

On the film side, Mothersbaugh credits are as extensive as anyone else's in the game. A frequent collaborator with the likes of Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Wes Anderson, the Devo lead has scored hits like The Rugrats Movie, Rugrats In Paris, Rugrats Go Wild, Happy Gilmore, Halloweentown, Mama's Boy, both Jump Streets, the Transylvania trilogy, three of the films in Warner Brothers' Lego franchise, and Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok.

“Everything’s become more devolved than I would have imagined possible,” Mothersbaugh concludes. “For anybody that’s doubting whether the coronavirus and COVID-19 is real, it’s really real.”

NickALive! wishes Mark well on his road to recovery. And to everyone reading, please wear a mask.

From the Los Angeles Times:

Mark Mothersbaugh nearly died from COVID-19. FaceTiming with his family kept him alive

As Mark Mothersbaugh lay in a Cedars-Sinai hospital bed in early June after contracting the novel coronavirus, a ventilator tube snaking into his throat to help him breathe, the Devo cofounder and acclaimed film and TV composer came to believe that he was recovering from a vicious beating in downtown Los Angeles.

“There’s a bookstore I love there where I get stationery supplies, and in my mind I had been there,” Mothersbaugh, 70, said Thursday afternoon, sitting on the patio of the Hollywood Hills home he shares with his wife, Anita Greenspan, and two teenage daughters. “I was convinced for about two weeks that I had been hit by a brick by somebody in Little Tokyo.”

Wearing chrome-framed eyeglasses, his nose and mouth covered by a black mask branded with the logo of his Mutato Musika commercial music company, Mothersbaugh touched his right temple while recalling the experience, as if searching for a head wound.

“I felt blood from being hit. I was handcuffed to a parking deck downtown. I had this whole elaborate story of how these kids sold me to an ambulance company that then got some sort of a payment for delivering COVID patients to their ICUs. I totally believed it,” he said.

Mothersbaugh’s delusions lasted more than two weeks during his time both on and off the ventilator. In fact, the artist didn’t contract the virus that causes COVID-19 while shopping in Little Tokyo. He caught it shuttling between his house and his Sunset Strip offices and studios in late May. His family was in Palm Springs. After he tested positive, he insisted on isolating by himself.

Three harrowing months later, Mothersbaugh and his family are back together and virus free. His experience, he says, was devastating. It was also unfortunately instructive, as it confirms an argument that he and his groundbreaking band, Devo, have been making for nearly 50 years.

“Everything’s become more devolved than I would have imagined possible,” he said. “For anybody that’s doubting whether the coronavirus and COVID-19 is real, it’s really real.”

He’s seen the doubters first hand. As he was recovering at home, a houseful of TikTok influencers across the street threw massive parties despite the lockdown and made news when Mayor Eric Garcetti shut off the property’s power. De-evolution is really real too.

Adjusting his mask, Mothersbaugh recalled the circumstances that led to his hospitalization.

He’d been taking the coronavirus seriously, he said. As news spread of its dangers, he’d avoided in-studio recording sessions for the four animated films he’d been scoring, instead conferencing in to observe and consult. But still, on at least one occasion near the end of May while working at Mutato, he unintentionally found himself in the company of a number of people he didn’t know.

When symptoms arrived a few days later, he thought his exhaustion was from juggling too many things at once. Then he took his temperature. It read 103. At first he thought he was reading the thermometer wrong. He told his wife, and she immediately started making calls.

Recalls Mothersbaugh, “A nurse came over the next morning and said, ‘You should be in ICU.’ I said, ‘That’s ridiculous.’ She replied that she’d been a nurse for three decades: ‘You need an ambulance right now.’”

From Greenspan’s perspective, the virus steamrolled through her husband’s system. “It went from, ‘I don’t feel good’ on Tuesday to an ambulance to Cedars on Saturday. It was terrifying.” She believes that the nurse, Patricia Lineweaver, saved Mothersbaugh’s life.

Mothersbaugh spent much of the next 18 days on his back, tilted up in his hospital bed in the intensive care unit. Isolated, like all of those infected with the virus, from everyone except essential medical personal, he lost all track of time and space. Tubes and machines cuffed him in place. At one point, he tried to break free of all the stuff attached to him and they had to secure his arms and legs.

During video calls with Greenspan and their daughters, 19-year-old Hui Hui and Margaret, 16, Mothersbaugh pressed them for information about the Little Tokyo brick-throwing incident. Had they found his attackers? Did they have any suspects? “Some of the delusions were very dark,” Mothersbaugh recalled. “Like, ‘Oh no, I have to get out of this place.’”

As he drifted in and out of consciousness, he remembers “a lot of people coming in on stretchers and people going out on stretchers.”

Another extended departure from reality involved Devo, the band he cofounded at Kent State after four students were killed by National Guard members in 1970.

While attached to the ventilator, he said: “I wrote a whole new Devo album and put together a whole live show.” In his hallucination, the band performed it on the streets of Hollywood — through the use of augmented reality. “We were standing on top of these projections, which were growing somehow.”

In reality, while Mothersbaugh was fighting for his life, in the outside world, Devo’s trademark “energy domes,” the flower pot-shaped red headgear the band wore during its early 1980s peak, were becoming a meme on social media. Someone at the company that manufacturers the domes realized that another of its products, plastic face shields, could easily be affixed to the hats to create a Devo dome-shield.

As both the meme and the virus advanced, Greenspan and their daughters kept a constant vigil through video calls.

During one crucial moment, Mothersbaugh believes they helped him stay tethered to the present.

His voice turning soft, he remembered “a time where I just felt exhausted. Like, ‘I could just float down this river right now, and it would be really peaceful. It wouldn’t be a freak-out. It wouldn’t be something I’d be scared of. I could really just do that.’ I really thought about it.

“And then it just happened that [Greenspan] called me, and she and the kids were on my phone, saying, ‘You’re getting out of there soon. Get off of that machine.’ I don’t know if everybody is lucky enough to have somebody do that for them.”

For Mothersbaugh, the message he most wants to convey is: “If you have anyone that you know who’s in ICU with COVID, contact them and keep them in touch with the outside world, because it’s easy to lose track of where you are and why you are. I had no idea I was on a ventilator for 10 days. Time meant nothing.”

Greenspan said that when the nurses finally removed the ventilator tube from her husband’s mouth, the first thing he said was, “Has anybody seen my glasses?”

Nearly two months after being discharged, the TikTokkers are gone and Mothersbaugh is back at work. He says he’s still feeling a few fading after-effects. Holding out his left hand, which is trembling slightly, he described “a little thing with my nerves.” Worse, though, is the overall physical toll, which he described as “creepy.”

“Before COVID, I was like, ‘Yeah, I’m starting to feel about 50 now, and I’m 70.’ When I was in the hospital, I was feeling like I was about 90. And now I’m back to 70, and I’m trying to get back to 50. That’s my goal.”

He says he’s been recovering by completing a visual art project he’s spent decades working on, one involving his long history in postcard art. In collaboration with artist Beatie Wolfe, Mothersbaugh has launched Postcards for Democracy, which the two describe as “a demonstration to support the 225-year-old U.S. Postal Service and the right to vote.” The aim is to help fund the Postal Service in advance of the November election.

Sighing through his face mask, Mothersbaugh said, “I remember at the end of 2019 talking to somebody and saying, ‘You know, I think 2020 is going to be a whole lot better.’ It kind of cracks me up to think about now.”

He added, with a hint of feigned enthusiasm, “We’re all getting to live through a pandemic. Who would have thought?”

Netflix Adds 'The Legend of Korra'

Get ready to head to Republic City!

Fans were delighted when Netflix added all three seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender to its programming library in mid-May, where it instantly became the platform's top title. Now, Nickelodeon has announced even more great news for fans: the follow-up series, The Legend of Korra will be joining the Netflix library in the U.S. on Friday, August 14!

All four seasons and 52 episodes will be available from midnight PDT–that is 3 a.m. EDT and 2 a.m. CDT.

The news comes as Avatar: The Last Airbendersmashed the record for being on Netflix’s daily Top 10 lists the most amount of times in a row!

Launched in April 2012, Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Korra ran for 52 episodes over four seasons ("Books"). Its first season premiered as basic cable’s number one kid’s show and drew 3.8 million viewers per episode, the highest for an animated series that year. Created and executive produced by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the series is translated in more than 25 languages for Nickelodeon branded channels internationally. The property has translated into a successful ongoing graphic novel series written by TV series co-creator DiMartino. The first graphic novel storyline, Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, has captured various Top 10 sales spots across children’s fiction, YA science fiction, and graphic novel categories since its debut in 2017. The epic story of The Legend of Korra, set in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender 70 years later, follows the journey of Avatar Korra, a 17-year-old girl striving to live up to the legacy of her predecessor Avatar Aang, while using her mastery of all four elements to confront political and spiritual unrest in a modernizing world.

The series made history by featuring an unmarried female same-sex couple in it's conclusion, which ended with Korra and Asami embarking on a romantic relationship, with fans endearingly calling the couple 'Korrasami'. Korra and Asami's relationship continues in comic book sequels to the series, including Ruins of the Empire.

The Legend of Korra cast includes Janet Varney (Stan Against Evil) as Korra, David Faustino (Married…with Children) as Mako, P.J. Byrne (Horrible Bosses) as Bolin, J.K. Simmons (The Closer) as Tenzin, Steve Blum (Cowboy Bebop) as Amon, Lance Henriksen (Aliens) as The Lieutenant, Mindy Sterling (Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery) as Chief Lin Beifong, Daniel Dae Kim (Hawaii Five-0) as Hiroshi Sato, Seychelle Gabriel (Falling Skies) as Asami Sato and Eva Marie Saint (Superman Returns) as Katara. Joaquim Dos Santos served as co-executive producer.

Netflix is currently developing a live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, with the show's original creators.

From Polygon:

The creators of The Legend of Korra look back at the prescient series

Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino dig back in

The Legend of Korra ran from April 2012 to December 2014, and each season shook fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender with an interrogation of the franchise’s philosophic fabric. The show ran in primetime on Nickelodeon, but had the soul of a transcendent HBO epic. The story whisked Korra, a struggling teenager with near godly might, into battles waged in moral grey areas and metaphysical dimensions in which mankind’s spirituality had literally been walled off. Aang knew that a genocidal firelord was an enemy to defeat; Korra challenged the new Avatar with anti-authority protagonists who preached equality but stepped over a line. It was tricky and contemplative then, but in 2020, the sequel series may have even more to say about politics, culture, behavior, and our place in the cosmos.

With The Legend of Korra now on Netflix and CBS All Access, Polygon connected with creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko over email to reflect on the biggest choices in the show, what they’ve heard about the Korra character in the years since the finale, and why, for all its social and spiritual ideas built into the series, they still really wanted to end the show with a big-ass mecha fight. The pair didn’t have anything to add to news of their departure from Netflix’s live-action reimagining of Airbender, but they had lots to say on how the show has aged — and why there could be more story to tell.

[Ed. note: this interview contains major spoiler for all four seasons of The Legend of Korra.]

First, an ice-breaker: What was the last bit of Korra that you actually sat down to watch? Do you go back to episodes for inspiration or just to entertain yourselves?

Bryan Konietzko: The last two scenes I watched were Korra and Zaheer’s airborne battle in the Book 3 finale, and Suyin and Kuvira’s metalbending fight in “Operation: Beifong.” They were side-by-side comparisons of co-executive producer Joaquim Dos Santos’ animatics and the final animation by Studio Mir. Every time I see that stuff I am proud of the whole team and incredibly impressed all over again by Joaquim.

Michael Dante DiMartino: I haven’t watched the series since we finished it. But when I was writing the Korra comics I often referenced the art books for characters and backgrounds, and I was always amazed by the volume and quality of the artwork all the artists created over the course of the production.

In the years since the show ended, what has surprised you about the Korra character and how she went over? Did any choice in the show challenge audiences more than you expected?

Konietzko: I think maybe we knew Korra, as a character and a series, was going to be more challenging for audiences, but that was what felt right to us. You’re never going to please everyone, especially with a sequel, so you may as well do what feels best — and that’s just how we make our shows anyway. The last thing we wanted to do was make the same series all over again, even if a lot of fans of ATLA might have felt that is what they wanted from us.

It was a deliberate choice to make Korra a very different character from Aang in multiple ways. That provided so many new opportunities with the stories and character dynamics. And it would have only served to water down what was great about Aang’s character if we just made a carbon copy of him with the next Avatar. He’s such a goofy, affable, optimistic kid, so making his successor a stubborn, pugnacious, angsty teenager was bound to put off a lot of people, and I remember plenty of fan reactions to that effect. If I was surprised at anything, it may have been that it seemed like people were less willing to let her make mistakes than they were with Aang. But I didn’t worry about that stuff too much. I am always more concerned with the cumulative impact of a character’s arc.

On the flipside, there are also plenty of people who related to and connected deeply with Korra, and I am one of them. Our main characters aren’t just fictional storytelling devices to me. After the years spent toiling to manifest their stories, they become very real people in my heart and mind. And by the end of that grueling production I felt very close to Korra. I definitely have much more in common with her personality than I do with Aang’s, and her personal struggles and growth felt very real to me. The testimonials from fans of Korra were incredibly powerful and personal, more along the lines of how some fans reacted to Zuko’s arc. Some of those people were also fans of ATLA, and some were not and found a connection to TLOK first. It’s a wonderful thing to be able to reach different audiences with the same world.

What from your lives or studies or news intake at the time of making Korra informed the choice of Tarrlok and Amon as two ideologically distinct, but connected villains in Book 1?

Konietzko: After ATLA ended we had the idea for a revolutionary sect of non-bending Chi-blockers. Once we started development on TLOK and had the setting of a modern metropolis in the Avatar world we thought that concept was a good fit. The age-old tensions between those who had bending abilities and those who didn’t would be brought into sharp contrast in this huge, melting pot of a city. Even though our fantasy world celebrates the amazing powers of benders, we wanted to take a look at how these societies had developed with a bias towards benders and how that has impacted those without bending.

As for developing Tarrlok and Amon, the real world has taught us that no matter how noble a cause is, there will always be individuals who will exploit it. But as with all of our villains, we’re very interested in finding out who they are and how they ended up so out of balance.

Have shifts in world culture and politics changed how you see season 1? Does the conversation echo what you were digging into in the series or challenge it?

DiMartino: We created ATLA and TLOK as series that would stand the test of time and deal with subjects and issues that people and societies have always struggled with. So, the shifts in the world right now haven’t changed how I see both series, but I have been surprised just how troublingly relevant some of the political themes are. But it’s all cyclical — which is another thing we were exploring. I’m thinking specifically in regard to the Ba Sing Se episodes in both series and how the lies and power struggles the past with Long Feng and King Kuei reverberates into Korra’s time with the Earth Queen, whose tyrannical behavior is a reaction to her ancestor’s past weakness.

In a way, Korra Book 1 feels like a comment on Aang’s decision to take Firelord Ozai’s bending away at the end of Last Airbender. How do you feel about Aang’s decision now?

Konietzko: For me, it’s more of an exploration into the ramifications of one’s choices, no matter how well intentioned they may have been. There are no easy solutions.

DiMartino: There’s a dialogue going on between both series on many levels, especially around the ability to take someone’s bending away. Aang used his power to defeat a tyrant while staying true to his values, while Amon is using his ability to manipulate and terrorize people. It’s not that the ability is all good or bad, it depends on the context and the intention behind the action.

Who was the hardest character to crack throughout The Legend of Korra, and what was the breakthrough moment that helped you make sense of them?

DiMartino: For me, Korra was the hardest to crack because she wasn’t the reluctant hero and wasn’t going on a typical hero’s journey. She didn’t fit the mold in many ways. I remember early on trying to figure out who or what would challenge her the most. Once we figured out that people like Tenzin and Lin Beifong (who should be her mentor figures) could actually hinder Korra in her quest to study airbending and take on the job she was meant to do, that helped me understand her predicament better. And coming up with Amon solidified everything. Since Korra was pro-bending, having an antagonist who was philosophically anti-bending gave her the perfect obstacle to her growth and challenged her worldview.

On a similar note, Korra pushed far beyond the concept of ATLA, but what was one addition to the Avatar world’s mythology that you found yourself surprised to have imagined and incorporated? Maybe something that felt way out there, or you stumbled into, but then it became obvious and rooted itself in the show.

DiMartino: When we started Korra, I didn’t imagine we’d find an organic way to bring back Airbenders (beyond Aang and Katara’s decedents). But with the season 2 storyline, the pieces all fell into place in a way that seemed plausible in the realm of the Avatar universe.

Was the backstory of the spirit world always in the back of your mind during ATLA, and were there ever plans to delve into it, or even tell Wan’s story?

Konietzko: There was much about the spirit world we had not worked out back on ATLA, but this idea of a mythic, prehistoric era when lion-turtles roamed the world with cities on their backs was kicking around as far back as 2003 when we were making the test pilot. Mike and I had some broad ideas for how the lion-turtles played an important role in the creation of the first Avatar. We thought that would be a cool story to do at some point, but we weren’t sure when or in what format we would have the opportunity to tell it. As we got into Book 2 of Korra, it ended up fitting well with the themes and the plot, so we went for it. From an art direction standpoint, it was a lot of fun to come up with the different palette and background style. And I’m really glad we got to make Wan’s story with the crew we had in Burbank and with Studio Mir.

Book 3’s villain Zaheer feels like one of the boldest choices in the series. He sounded reasonable then, and today, he’s echoing a lot of what we hear from activists who want to see change in the world. Was it a challenge to put him in a position where Korra had to question and defeat him? Does Zaheer play differently now than he did then?

Konietzko: The feedback I have consistently heard from fans is that Zaheer really messes with their heads because the things he does are so awful, yet they feel he makes some really good points. And I think he knows what he is doing is awful and he doesn’t necessarily enjoy it, but whatever happened in his mysterious past was painful enough that he has accepted that as necessary. That’s why he’s definitely one of my favorite villains that we’ve ever created. I think a big part of our creative point of view is to explore the gray areas in everything, especially with our villains. We try to look at all of our characters as people first, then as heroes or villains second — or perhaps more accurately, protagonists and antagonists. If a character is simply “evil” and aware of it, then that’s really static for me. It is far more dynamic and realistic if that character believes they are on the right side. One of the things that resonated with me so deeply about Princess Mononoke was how there weren’t any villains, but rather people with competing interests. That wasn’t a perspective I was seeing in Western animation at that time, but that struck a chord with me and the kinds of stories I wanted to tell.

Korra suffers a great deal of trauma across the series. What kind of conversations were you having on the writing and production side to be authentic about that? Does it feel true to the stories of survival you’ve heard in the years since?

DiMartino: Yes, it’s been humbling to have people send messages or tell us in person how much that storyline resonated with them. When we discussed Korra’s season 4 story arc, we talked about her starting out in such a dark place that she didn’t even want to be the Avatar anymore (to contrast her attitude in season 1). I remember reading about PTSD and people who had experienced traumatic events and what that recovery was like. When I wrote “Korra Alone,” I used what I felt and my life’s experiences to image what Korra might be feeling and going through in her situation.

So much of the show is about not solving every problem with a punch, but you still get to have a giant robot attack in the Book 4 finale. Did you envision that finale set piece from the beginning and work backward to Kuvira or did something about Kuvira give you the clear to go that big?

Konietzko: The idea of the giant mech was something we had kicked around a little bit for Hiroshi Sato in Book 1, but I’m glad we waited and built up to it for the series’ end. In a lot of cases, once we figure out an antagonist then that character tells us where the story needs to go. About midway through production on the series we knew we wanted to have a military dictator as our final villain, so we started aiming towards that, laying the foundation for Kuvira in Book 3. She not only provided a stark contrast to Zaheer for variety’s sake, but she was also a great foil for a version of Korra that could have come to be — one who was consumed with her power. It helped show how much Korra had grown as an Avatar. But even if Aang and Korra chose a more peaceful path towards conflict resolution, they still had massive conflicts to resolve, which makes for exciting finales. The emotion behind a fight will always be the thing that resonates the most, so we try to focus on that.

Image: Nickelodeon
Last year, there was talk of a Last Airbender season 4 that dealt with Zuko and Azula that ultimately didn’t happen. Was that the case, and if so, did anything from that early development become part of Korra?

Konietzko: There was never going to be a season 4, not from us and not from Nickelodeon. Mike and I planned ATLA to be a three-season arc as far back as our initial pitch in 2002, and in 2008 we finished the story we set out to tell.

DiMartino: We finished the show exactly as we had intended. We hadn’t considered continuing Aang’s story until Dark Horse Comics approached us with the idea of returning to ATLA in graphic novel form. And at that point we worked with writer Gene Luen Yang to expand the story beyond the animated series.

Do you still have questions about the world and history of the Avatar world? Do you delight in anything you haven’t yet answered for yourselves?

Konietzko: Absolutely. Even after 18 years, I still find the Avatarverse to be a wellspring of creativity and storytelling. Mike and I built this fantasy world out of things we love, and we simply set out to make shows that we would want to watch ourselves. Thankfully that has kept it fresh for me after all this time. While it doesn’t encompass everything I want to say and do as an artist, it a really wonderful place to come back to and create within.

DiMartino: Yes, there are many seeds we planted through both series and in the graphic novels that could be expanded on and explored. The Avatar universe is a big place and has a long history so there’s a lot of potential for new stories.

The Astronauts 👩‍🚀 OFFICIAL TEASER TRAILER | Launching Soon on Nickelodeon

The countdown begins. 5 kids accidentally rocket themselves into space. How will their journey end? Find out when ‘The Astronauts’ launches soon on Nickelodeon.

In Nickelodeon's new action-adventure series, The Astronauts, the spaceship Odyssey II is set to launch to investigate a mysterious asteroid passing by Earth. When group of kids use their parent’s security clearance to sneak onto the empty ship, the launch sequence is accidentally initiated. Blasting off into space with no proper training, a malfunctioning onboard AI system, and their parents watching from Earth, the kids embark on a journey of survival using only their smarts and friendship as tools.

Nickelodeon is giving kids a peek at their upcoming new show The Astronauts!

In a new trailer shared by PEOPLE, a group of kids embark on "the adventure of a lifetime when they are mistakenly launched into space."

The series is Nickelodeon's first production with Imagine Kids+Family and is set to premiere this fall.

According to a synopsis, the group of kids end up in space after gathering to watch the spaceship Odyssey II — that's being launched to investigate a mysterious asteroid passing by Earth — and sneak onto the ship.

Starring in the new show (executive produced by Imagine Entertainment Chairmen Brian Grazer and Ron Howard and Imagine Kids+Family President Stephanie Sperber) are Miya Cech, Bryce Gheisar, Keith L. Williams, Kayden Grace Swan, Ben Daon and Paige Howard.

In the wake of the 2020 Kids' Choice Awards being postponed due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, Nickelodeon has something exciting in store for fans this weekend.

On Saturday night the network will be virtually holding the "ultimate house party," revealing the first-ever Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together, a brand-new special that will benefit No Kid Hungry and is being hosted by Victoria Justice. The special will also feature a sneak-peek of Nickelodeon's upcoming Slime Voyage.

Update (9/1) - Nickelodeon recently held a press day for The Astronauts!:

Update (5/19) - Imagine Kids+Family reportedly tried to acquire the use of eight Rotofarms for use in The Astronauts, however, Rotofarm creator Toby Farmer unfortunately didn't have Rotofarms to spare the production. Rotofarm is a device inspired by NASA research on growing plants in space. It uses anti-gravity — literally, when the wheel rotates around its LED light source and the plants are hanging upside down — to grow plants faster. A magnetic cover reduces the glare and increases the internal humidity. You manage it via an app.

Dorg Van Dango will premiere on Nicktoons Global on Sunday 13th September 2020, airing on the Nicktoons channels in Central Eastern Europe, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Russia and more. Following launch, Dorg Van Dango will continue to air regularly on Nicktoons. Please see local listings for airtimes.

The series will roll out onto Nickelodeon channels and blocks globally throughout 2020. Commissioning broadcaster Family Channel will air the new series in Canada.
