Nickelodeon Cancels Kids‘ Choice Awards 2020: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz at Europa-Park in Germany

Update (11/3) - Nickelodeon regretfully announces that the recording of Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, Nickelodeon GSA's localised version of Nickelodeon's 2020 Kids' Choice Awards, on Thursday 9th April 2020 has been cancelled. Due to the COVID-19 (aka coronavirus) outbreak, Nickelodeon's number-one priority is the safety of their guests, and they've taken this decision as a precaution, following the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and local authorities. Of course, this decision was not easy for Nick.

Please note that this only affects the Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, not the U.S. version, which is still set to go ahead on Sunday 22nd March 2020 at the Forum in Inglewood, California.


Nickelodeon promises fans that they are currently doing their best to ensure that a safe, beautiful show production can take place on a smaller scale in the future. What exactly this show will look like will be announced in the following weeks - but of course the local winners of the KCA 2020, the kids' favourite stars, will be announced there on Easter Sunday, 12th April 2020 at 19:00 Uhr.

If you have purchased tickets for Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz online via the ticket shop or via the guest service using your telephone number or e-mail address, you will be eligible for a refund. Ticket buyers will be contacted by Europa-Park via these channels shortly for a refund, or they can - indicating the invoice number - contact ticketing@europapark.de.

Die Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz haben es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, die größten Stars der Kinder und Jugendlichen mit einer großen, slimigen Party zu feiern. Die gesundheitliche Unversehrtheit und Sicherheit des Publikums vor Ort sowie der Künstlerinnen und Künstler und unserer Crew ist für uns dabei die höchste Priorität.

Diese Sicherheit können wir derzeit leider nicht mehr garantieren. Nach reiflicher Überlegung fiel daher die Entscheidung, die diesjährige Show-Aufzeichnung am 09.04.2020 abzusagen. Dabei orientieren wir uns auch an den Vorgaben des Bundesgesundheitsministeriums, des Bundeslandes Baden-Württemberg und der örtlichen Behörden. Die Entscheidung ist uns natürlich nicht leichtgefallen.

Wir möchten unseren Fans aber das Versprechen geben, dass wir derzeit unser Bestes dafür geben, eine sichere, schöne Showproduktion im kleinen Rahmen stattfinden zu lassen. Wie diese Show genau aussehen wird, werden wir in den folgenden Wochen verkünden – aber selbstverständlich werden die lokalen Gewinner des KCA-Votings 2020, die Lieblingsstars der Kids, dort am 12.04.2020 bekanntgegeben.

Falls bereits Tickets für die Veranstaltung am 09.04.2020 im Europa-Park online über den Ticketshop oder über den Gästeservice mit Angabe einer Telefonnummer oder E-Mail-Adresse gekauft wurden, werden die Käuferinnen und Käufer in Kürze über diese Wege vom Europa-Park zwecks einer Rückerstattung kontaktiert oder können sich – unter Angabe der Rechnungsnummer – an ticketing@europapark.de wenden.

Nickelodeon Germany (Deutschland), Switzerland (Schweiz) and Austria (Österreich) are once again partnering with Europa-Park, Germany's largest amusement park, to host the third annual Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz, Nickelodeon GSA's localised version of Nickelodeon's 2020 Kids' Choice Awards!


Launched in 2018, Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz invites kids across Germany, Switzerland and Austria to vote and celebrate their local favourite stars from film, television, music and social media, with the winners receiving their Orange Blimp Awards at a super slimy event at Europa-Park in Rust in front of a audience of more than 1,000 children.

Hosted by Lisa & Lena for the second year in a row along with Jan Köppen (Ninja Warrior Germany), this years Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz will take place on Thursday 9th April 2020, and will give 2,800 kids the chance to see their favourite celebs walk the Orange Carpet and experience the slimiest party of the year!

As in 2018 and 2019, Nickelodeon is teaming up with MackMedia, Europa-Park's own production company, to film and produce a television special featuring all the slimy highlights from the show, which will air on Nickelodeon Deutschland, Nickelodeon Schweiz and Nickelodeon Österreich on Easter Sunday, 12th April 2020 at 19:00 Uhr.

Nickelodeon Deutschland, Nickelodeon Schweiz and Nickelodeon Österreich will also air the international edition of KCA 2020 on Monday, 23rd March 2020 at 19:00 Uhr!


Being hosted at Europa-Park allows Nickelodeon to take kid-favourite celebrities on the rides - and slimes - of their lives! In 2018, Henry Danger star Jace Norman and German model and a TV presenter Rebecca Mir took the "Roller Coaster Slime Challenge" on the Blue Fire Megacoaster, which culminated in a epic Nickelodeon sliming. This was followed in 2019 when singer-songwriter and Eurovision Song Contest winner Meyer-Landrut and German fashion model and television host Lena Gercke received Nickelodeon's highest honour on the Atlantica SuperSplash water ride. The newly opened indoor water park Rulantica could be the scene of this years epic sliming!

Among the many stars performing and making special appearances at Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz will be: The cast of Spotlight, the cast of Kartoffelsalat 3 - Das Musical, The Voice Kids 2020 - Coaches, Deine Freunde, Freshtorge, Julien Bam and Matthias Schweighöfer!

Heute startet der Kartenvorverkauf für die Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards 2020: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz im Europa-Park in Rust, Deutschlands größtem Freizeitpark. Kurz vor Ostern können wieder bis zu 2.800 Kids die coolste und slimigste Party des Jahres erleben. Tickets gibt es ab sofort hier.

Die lokale Version der weltweit größten Preisverleihung von und für Kids wird zum zweiten Mal von den Social-Media-Lieblingen Lisa & Lena, die unter anderem 15,2 Mio. Follower auf Instagram haben, moderiert – diesmal zusammen mit TV-Host Jan Köppen, bekannt durch Ninja Warrior Germany.

Die von Nickelodeon und MackMedia produzierte Show wird am Donnerstag, den 9. April, aufgezeichnet und am Ostersonntag, 12. April um 19:00 Uhr bei Nick gezeigt.

Und natürlich gibt es wieder spektakuläre Slimings. Es ist wieder KCA-Zeit! Wenige Wochen bevor rund ums Osterwochenende wieder die Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz stattfinden, steigt schon die große, slimige Party in Los Angeles: Dieses Jahr ist der mit drei Grammy® Awards ausgezeichnete Musiker Chance The Rapper Gastgeber der Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards am Sonntag, 22. März 2020.

Neben dieser News wurden am gestrigen Abend von Sängerin und YouTube-Star Annie LeBlanc und ihrer Schwester Hayley LeBlanc während eines Livestream-Events die diesjährigen Nominierten bekanntgegeben.

An der Spitze der Liste mit den meisten Nominierungen für die US-amerikanischen KCAs stehen: Avengers: Endgame mit 11 Nominierungen, Taylor Swift mit fünf Nominierungen und Die Eiskönigin 2, Henry Danger sowie Lil Nas X mit jeweils vier Nominierungen. Zu den erstmals Nominierten gehören: Tiffany Haddish, DaBaby, Tom Holland, Brie Larson, Lizzo und Megan Thee Stallion. Will Smith feiert dieses Jahr einen Rekord: Mit nun insgesamt 29 Nominierungen ist er der meist nominierte Star in der Geschichte der Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards!

Die Moderation der lokalen Ausgabe der KCAs, die in diesem Jahr zum dritten Mal im Europa-Park in Rust stattfinden wird, wird von den Zwillingen Lisa & Lena übernommen. HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—March 11, 2020—Grammy® Award-winning global superstar Justin Bieber is set to perform his chart-topping single “Intentions” featuring Quavo at this year’s Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020, the biggest and slimiest awards show where kids are in control. Bieber will light up the “KCA” stage as he is joined by Quavo and 20 talented kid dancers for an electrifying performance surrounded by his fans.

Hosted by Grammy® Award-winning superstar Chance the Rapper, Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020 will air on Sunday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT) from the Forum in Inglewood, Calif. Within hours of the live show, KCA 2020 will roll-out on Nickelodeon channels internationally, providing kids around the world in more than 170 countries and territories a front row seat to all the stunts, surprises and slime!

Said Bieber, “Early in my career, I got to perform one of my first singles on the Kids’ Choice Awards stage, and I can’t wait to do it again and share my new music for the kids and with the kids. Get that slime ready!”


With over a dozen Kids’ Choice Awards wins, Bieber is currently nominated this year for three orange blimps: two in the category of “Favorite Music Collaboration” for his songs “10,000 Hours” with Dan + Shay and “I Don’t Care” with Ed Sheeran, and one for “Favorite Male Artist.”

“Intentions,” featuring Quavo, has garnered over 125 million combined audio and video streams to date, and is Bieber’s second single off his fifth studio album, Changes. The single debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot R&B Songs chart.

Viewers everywhere will be able to experience the show on all Nickelodeon screens and platforms, as Nick offers a front-row seat to slime, stunts and celebrities. Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020 will be simulcast live across Nickelodeon, TeenNick, Nicktoons and the Nick Jr. channel in the U.S. and YTV in Canada.

Fans can currently cast votes on the official Kids’ Choice Awards website, www.KidsChoiceAwards.com, and on the Screens Up app on supported iPad, iPhone and Android devices in the U.S. International fans can cast votes through the Nick Play app in regions where it is available. BURBANK, Calif.--Feb. 19, 2020--Nickelodeon is taking the misadventures of Big Nate from page to screen with an all-new animated TV series based on the best-selling children’s books written and drawn by acclaimed author and cartoonist Lincoln Peirce. The eponymous 26-episode series follows Nate, a precocious 11-year-old boy, and his best friends as they navigate sixth grade with humor and style. Big Nate will be produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.

Big Nate is a book title I've wanted to translate into a series for a long time, and I am so happy this awesome, super-funny character is coming to Nickelodeon," said Ramsey Naito, Executive Vice President, Animation Production and Development, Nickelodeon. “All of creator Lincoln Peirce's slightly unruly, but entirely relatable characters share Nick’s same creative DNA, and we can't wait for them to join our amazing family!"

The TV series will feature brand-new original storylines centered on Nate and his mischievous shenanigans that usually result in disaster, detention or both. Whether trying to convince everyone that their school is haunted to get out of a test, or accidentally setting the pet iguana free in the school’s air ducts, Nate and his friends cause trouble everywhere--and must keep their cool before they get caught.

“With the greenlight of this show, Nate is getting one step closer to achieving true awesomeness,” said Peirce. “I am thrilled to be collaborating with Nickelodeon on new adventures for this unlikely sixth-grade hero.”

The Big Nate TV series is executive produced by Mitch Watson (All Hail King Julien) and John Cohen (The Angry Birds Movie), with Peirce serving as consultant throughout development and production. Bridget McMeel is co-producer.

Peirce’s humor-based books about Nate and his friends have spent more than 150 weeks on the New York Times’ Best-Seller list. Portland cartoonist’s Big Nate gets own show on Nickelodeon

The comic strip, created and drawn by Portland artist Lincoln Peirce, was greenlit to become an animated TV series.

“Big Nate,” the popular comic strip and children’s book character created and drawn by Portland artist Lincoln Peirce, is slated to become an animated television series on Nickelodeon.

The children’s cable channel announced the news Wednesday.

“It feels really exciting,” said Peirce, who allowed that he is tempering his excitement with caution – just in case. “There are so many stories of people whose properties have been optioned or there’s been a big announcement about a show that was going to get made, and then things didn’t happen and they don’t get made.

“But this looks really promising. They’ve greenlit it into production, I’ve met the head writer, and they’re assembling a team that seems really good.”

Peirce, 56, will serve as a consultant for the series. The show does not have a scheduled air date, a Nickelodeon spokesperson said. The 26-episode series will be called “Big Nate” and will feature new original storylines based around 11-year-old Nate and his sixth-grade buddies.

Peirce began drawing “Big Nate” in 1981, and it appears in more than 400 U.S. newspapers. In the strip, Peirce relates the life of a sixth-grade kid and his coming-of-age adventures. Peirce converted the strip into a best-selling series of books. It’s also been turned into a traveling musical – and now an animated TV show.

“Every cartoonist in the world” wants to get his work in front of more people, Peirce said, adding that he was thrilled and excited by the prospects. He called the newspaper strip “my first love. That is what I grew up wanting to do, and I plan to keep doing it as long as I can.”

The Portland artist is unsure how this development will play out for him going forward, in terms of his career or bigger paychecks.

“From what I understand, TV in and of itself is not a huge payday. There’s a relatively modest option payment and there’s a modest amount you are paid per episode,” he said. “But shows that get successful generate income off ancillary stuff – merchandising, for instance. In my case, if it were to become a successful TV series, then that would probably be reflected in book sales.”

In a news release, Nickelodeon’s executive vice president of animation production and development, Ramsey Naito, said that Peirce’s “slightly unruly, but entirely relatable characters” have the “same creative DNA” as the TV network.

“‘Big Nate’ is a book title I’ve wanted to translate into a series for a long time, and I am so happy this awesome, super-funny character is coming to Nickelodeon,” Naito said.

TV Providers Offering Kids Channels for Free Amidst Coronavirus Outbreak

In the wake of the COVID-19 (aka coronavirus) outbreak which is gripping the globe, several television providers around the world are giving customers free access to kids channels.


-- Vodafone Spain is giving all customers free access to its kids-oriented ‘Peques’ pack, with series and films for all ages plus Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., My Nick Jr., Panda Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, and Baby TV. The operator is also giving all its professional, SME and freelancer customers access to unlimited mobile data until the end of the month in the event they have to work from home in response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak in Spain. In a statement, Vodafone Spain CEO Antonio Coimbra said the company had also decided to offer all employees in the country the possibility of working from home with a view to limiting the risk of contagion. Coimbra said the company held a successful home working trial for 2,600 employees to assess the ability of different systems to respond in contingency situations.

-- MásMóvil in Spain is offering 3 months of Sky TV starting March 12, completely free of charge to all its customers. Sky TV features channels such as Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, MTV, FOX, AXN, TNT, SyFy, Calle 13, TCM, FOX Life, AXN White, Historia and National Geographic, as well as thousands of content on demand with series such as Chernobyl, The Walking Dead and Vikings. The gift is valued at 21 euros, since the subscription to the platform costs 6.99 euros per month, although the first month of trial is free.

Balíček programov pre deti získajú abonenti automaticky.

Spoločnosť Swan oznámila, že sa v reakcii na niektoré zatvorené školy rozhodla pre klientov sprístupniť balík kanálov pre deti zadarmo.

„Veríme, že rodinám našich zákazníkov pomôžeme tým, že budú mať k dispozícii bezplatne na 14 dní niekoľko špecializovaných detských kanálov,“ uviedol k téme generálny riaditeľ Swanu Roman Vavrík.

Klienti môžu od dnešného dňa sledovať programy JimJam, Cartoon Network, Boomerang, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. a NickToons. Aktivácia kanálov prebehla automaticky, nemusíte o ňu žiadať.

Swan zároveň požiadal klientov, aby v prípade potreby uprednostnili telefonický alebo e-mailový kontakt a nenavštevovali zákaznícke centrá, ak to nie je nutné.

Na vzniknutú situáciu reaguje SWAN aj vo vzťahu k svojim zamestnancom.

„Aj mnohí z našich kolegov využívajú možnosť pracovať z domu a to nielen rodičia školopovinných detí. Snažíme sa tiež o rozumný manažment ľudských zdrojov tak, aby sme eliminovali možné riziká nákazy. Zrušili sme pracovné cesty, interné aj externé eventy, ale aj pracovné porady, ktorých sa zúčastňuje väčšie množstvo ľudí,“ hovorí manažérka ľudských zdrojov Andrea Gubová.

Pepephone ya anunció esta mañana que regala 5 GB para este mes a todos sus clientes, independientemente de la tarifa que tengan. Ahora, MásMóvil ofrecerá a partir de mañana 12 de marzo 3 meses de Sky TV de forma totalmente gratuita para todos sus clientes.

Yoigo, Lebara o Llamaya no ofrecen nuevas promos

El resto de marcas del grupo amarillo no añaden ninguna promoción adicional, aunque en el caso de Yoigo nos encontramos que siguen regalando 3 meses de Sky TV y 3 meses de FlixOlé a todos sus clientes. En el caso de Lebara, el pasado mes de febrero el operador añadió 12 países con llamadas internacionales incluidas, además de que los gigas no consumidos se suman para el mes siguiente. En el caso de Llamaya, también añadieron recientemente las llamadas gratuitas entre clientes de prepago.

El motivo para regalar Sky TV y no Agile TV, que es su plataforma de televisión, es porque esta última requiere utilizar su TV Box 4K, aunque también puede visualizarse desde móviles y tablets. Con Sky TV hay una mayor flexibilidad, además de que es una promoción que ya ofrecían a sus clientes de Yoigo.

Sky cuenta con más de una decena de canales

En Sky TV poco a poco vamos encontrando más contenido, a pesar de su lento inicio en nuestro país. Tendremos a nuestra disposición canales como FOX, AXN, TNT, SyFy, MTV, Calle 13, TCM, FOX Life, AXN White, Comedy Central, Historia, National Geographic, Nickelodeon o Disney Junior, además de miles de contenidos bajo demanda con series como Chernobyl, The Walking Dead o Vikingos. Vodafone se snaží pomoci uklidnit zuřící epidemii koronaviru. Nejen, že díky svým telekomunikacím doručil klientům v Itálii informaci od Ministerstva zdravotnictví, ale zároveň se chystá pomoci právě těm zákazníkům, kteří v Itálii museli setrvat kvůli celoplošné karanténě.

Komunikace je základ

Od dnešního data, tedy od 11. března, až do odvolání, nebude Vodafone svým klientům, kteří zůstali v zamořených oblastech Itálie, účtovat poplatky za telefonování či posílání SMS zpráv do Česka a Slovenska. Pochopitelně turisté v Itálii budou moci využívat i neomezených mobilních dat.

K aktivaci neomezených dat bude nutné restartovat svůj telefon a také nastavit jednoho z brandovaných operátorů v Itálii, tedy buď Vodafone Italy, Italy Telecom anebo Italy WIND.

V Itálii tamní vláda v pondělí oznámila globální karanténu uvalenou na celou Itálii. Jinými slovy, nikdo nesmí ani tam, ani ven. A to představuje komplikaci pro zhruba 12 tisíc českých turistů, kteří v Itálii musí zůstat. Vodafone jim tak alespoň touto cestou chce nabídnout pomocnou ruku.

Televize pro děti doma

Druhé gesto, které Vodafone směrem ke svým klientům učinil, je rozšířená nabídka televizních programů zcela zdarma. Drtivá většina škol je zavřená, otevřené zůstávají pouze školky. Aby se tak děti doma nenudily, Vodafone přichází s obohacením domácích tarifů od UPC – Vodafone s prémiovými kanály, jako je Nickelodeon, Minimax, Disney Channel nebo Cartoon Network. Tato nabídka platí do 11. dubna.

Tím operátor reaguje na to, že Bezpečnostní rada státu včera vydala seznam opatření, která mají snížit riziko šíření nákazy koronaviru Covid-19. Patří mezi ně například zákaz (či regulace) kulturních, sportovních, náboženských a podobných akcí, kde je účast víc jak 100 lidí. Krom jiného jsou také zavřeny všechny školy v České republice.

Lidem v izolovaných oblastech nebude účtovat volání do České republiky a na Slovensko. Zdarma budou i SMS po vyčerpání balíčku a data. V Česku zase klientům UPC TV přidá zdarma televizní kanály, včetně prémiových, aby po dobu zrušené výuky ve školách měly děti a rodiny větší zábavu a pestrost trávení volného času. Internet a telekomunikační služby Vodafonu tak pomůžou čelit neočekávané krizové situaci v tuzemsku i v zahraničí.

„Komunikace je základní lidskou potřebou, o to víc v kritických a nečekaných situacích,“ vysvětluje důvod ke změnám viceprezident pro nefiremní zákazníky Vodafonu, Quique Vivas. „V situacích, jako je nedobrovolné přebývání v nějakém prostoru, ať už v jindy malebné Itálii nebo doma s dětmi bez vyučování, je důležité být ve spojení s přáteli, rodinou, lékaři nebo zaměstnavatelem a mít jak smysluplně vyplnit nečekané volno. Nickelodeon will be producing a brand-new music-based SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off centered on Squidward Tentacles, the malcontent anthropomorphic octopus as part of the network's freshly announced multi-year output deal with Netflix, The New York Times has learned.


Update (2/20/2020) - ViacomCBS confirmed today during the company's forth quarter 2019 earnings call that Nickelodeon is producing a SpongeBob spin-off for Netflix!:

The “Best Year Ever” launched with the premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special earlier this summer, and leads up to the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, coming May 2020.

It’s a ‘SpongeBob SquarePants’ World at ViacomCBS

“SpongeBob SquarePants” may be an American animated comedy television series originally created for Nickelodeon, but the series about a sea sponge and his aquatic friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom is also a distribution goldmine for ViacomCBS.

So much so that CEO Bob Bakish used the cartoon character to underscore how the media giant hopes to monetize content assets across emerging distribution platforms.

Speaking March 4 at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom confab in San Francisco, Bakish outlined how “SpongeBob” IP helps link ViacomCBS’s three business units: linear television, video streaming and feature film.

Bakish said the cartoon franchise is currently distributed globally on television, including serving “roughly 40% of all children” in the United States. “SpongeBob” is distributed on both ad-supported Pluto TV and subscription-based CBS All Access and Noggin.

“That provides additional reach as we build out our assets,” Bakish said. “In the studio business, ‘SpongeBob’ will debut its third feature film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run in the second quarter. That film has tested very well and provides incremental reach and incremental monetization.”

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004) generated $140 million at the worldwide box office, including $85 million in the United states. A sequel, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015) generated $325 million at the global box office, including $163 million in the U.S.

Bakish said ViacomCBS is producing two feature-length “SpongeBob” spin-off movies for Netflix, representing a “profitable, low-risk rental business with set margins,” which he said translates to content ownership for separate distribution down the road, including consumer products and recreation.

“So, we’re convinced that both an O&O [owned and operated] and a third-party studio strategy is absolutely right for ViacomCBS,” Bakish said. “We believe that maximizing the value of our content asset, that is what you see us executing in 2020 and beyond.”

At Paramount Pictures, Bakish said the focus is to improve content ROI, which he said means a balanced release slate and co-financed movies. Pending releases include: A Quiet Place Part II and Top Gun: Maverick.

The studio in the most-recent fiscal period generated more revenue from home entertainment than theatrical distribution. Bakish dismissed that “aside” and pointed to Paramount’s improved growth in revenue and earnings over the previous eight fiscal quarters.

He said the studio has ramped up television content production, a business that didn’t exist five years ago. The segment is now producing 27 series, including “13 Reasons Why” for Netflix and “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” on Amazon Prime Video.

Bakish said Paramount’s “pay 1 window,” the period in which content rights are available to premium cable networks as Starz and HBO and subscription streamers like Netflix, has “tremendous” value.

“We’ve certainly gotten calls about it,” he said. “At the same time it certainly has strategic value to us.”

Bakish was resolute that ViacomCBS’ core value hinges on content. In an era where media competitors are keeping their programming behind proprietary streaming platforms, ViacomCBS will continue to produce content for its own platforms as well as those operated by third parties. In other words, Bakish believes the value of its IP transcends its own platforms.

Consider what ViacomCBS has done with SpongeBob SquarePants. The television show appears on linear cable and streaming platforms. Paramount Pictures’ The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will hit theaters in May. Nickelodeon is also slated to produce two SpongeBob spinoffs for Netflix—which ViacomCBS can air on its own channels once Netflix’s rights expire. The company also makes money from SpongeBob consumer products and recreation. The net effect: the value of SpongeBob will only increase as it reaches more and more people across multiple platforms.

THE MULTIBILLION DOLLAR BUSINESS OF PAW PATROL

How six animated rescue pups have come to dominate the global licensing market.


There are lots of familiar franchises in preschool entertainment: Sesame Street, Dora the Explorer, Thomas the Tank Engine.

For today’s generation of toddlers, the most popular name is PAW Patrol™. It’s the leading brand for children up to six-years-old—topping Mickey Mouse, Frozen, and Elmo—according to a 2019 survey commissioned by the trade group License International. In the U.S., the Spin Master Entertainment series that airs on Nickelodeon has been the most-watched show for kids ages two to five since 2016. Globally, it airs in more than 170 countries, reaching 350 million households.

In the world of consumer products, PAW Patrol has been the top preschool franchise in the U.S. and UK since 2016, according to market research firm The NPD Group. In 2019, it also became the number one preschool toy franchise in Australia, Mexico, Canada, Spain, France, and Italy.

The six animated pups who protect Adventure Bay have been a boon to Nickelodeon’s consumer products and live events business. Last year, Nickelodeon and Spin Master delivered $2 billion at retail globally from the sales of toys, apparel, home goods, publishing, and more.

PAW Patrol is a true pop culture juggernaut,” says Pam Kaufman, president, global consumer products, ViacomCBS. “It has been a force in the kids’ licensing business since we launched the series in 2013, and these beloved pups continue to drive excitement for new products in every aisle.”

‘Creating IP From the Ground Up’

PAW Patrol was conceived as both a TV show and toy line by the Canadian global children’s entertainment company Spin Master in 2010. At the time, Spin Master was known for its boys’ action toys, particularly figurines for the anime series Bakugan®. Though it owned intellectual property (IP), or the rights to original fictional works, it was relying on other companies to produce content. “Our leadership wanted to launch an entertainment business to take control of our own destiny by creating IP from the ground up,” says Jennifer Dodge, Spin Master’s executive vice president of entertainment.

The company saw an opportunity in the preschool age range of two to five, which hadn’t seen a hit in years. “Many of the mainstays for preschool audiences were at the end of their life cycles and the new launches at the time didn’t hit the zeitgeist in a major way,” says Dodge.

Spin Master asked a handful of creators for preschool show concepts that were rooted in action, adventure, and transformation. Six disparate ideas came back. The artist behind Bob the Builder, Keith Chapman, returned a one-pager about puppies performing rescue missions that stood out, a concept that would be relatable for young audiences learning about their communities. It featured a German shepherd as the police dog and a dalmation as a fire dog. The inclusion of a doghouse that transformed into a vehicle put Chapman’s idea over the top for Spin Master.

In August 2013, PAW Patrol started airing on Nickelodeon in North America, followed by other markets in that fall. Traditionally, preschool toys and merchandise hit shelves a year to 18 months after content first airs. But, within a few months of PAW Patrol‘s premiere, parents posted on Nickelodeon social platforms looking for toys and gear.

Consumer brands were eager to license the pups’ likenesses for their kid-friendly products. “The response to the series was unprecedented—kids couldn’t get enough PAW Patrol,” says Jamie Drew, senior vice president, strategic partnerships and business development for ViacomCBS consumer products. Demand from retailers, manufacturers, and consumers was so strong that the Nickelodeon team sped up its planned consumer products launch by several months. Toys and merchandise hit shelves in June 2014.


The partnership between Nickelodeon and Spin Master led retailers to feel confident putting merchandise on their shelves, says Amanda Cioletti, editor of License Global magazine. “Certain licensees won’t take on a newer property because they don’t know how it’s going to track at market,” says Cioletti. “Since PAW Patrol was developed with merchandise in mind it became a much easier proposition for them to take on. From a licensee’s perspective, it feels like less of a risk because a lot of the heavy lifting has already been done and it’s a safer bet.”

“At Spin Master Entertainment, we really focus on creating endearing characters and compelling storylines for kids first,” says Dodge. “If we are successful, kids fall in love with our characters, as they have with PAW Patrol, and ultimately want to live out those adventures in their own play experience.”

Outfitting a PAW Patrol Lifestyle

Since 2014, PAW Patrol has earned $8 billion in global retail sales. Kids in Russia can drink PAW Patrol-branded Danone yogurt; in Australia, they can sleep in PAW Patrol-branded pajamas from Caprice; and in New Zealand, they can read PAW Patrol books published by Lake Press.

In fact, there’s PAW Patrol-branded merchandise for every hour of a preschooler’s day: From the sheets, blankets, and pillows on their beds, to their toothpaste and toothbrush on their sinks, to the clothes in their closets. There are branded car seats, backpacks, books, toys, and figurines. They can eat cereal, chicken nuggets, soup, popsicles, and string cheese from pup-adorned packages on PAW Patrol plates and drink from PAW Patrol-branded juice boxes or sippy cups. When it’s toilet training time, there are character potties and training pants.

It’s more than products. There are two live touring shows—Race to the Rescue, which debuted in 2016, and The Great Pirate Adventure in 2017. There are dedicated PAW Patrol sections in seven theme parks internationally and mall tours in Asia, where it gets so hot that people seek air conditioned-relief by visiting retail centers that double as entertainment venues that have characters walking around, shows, and indoor theme parks. The PAW villa at the Nick Resort in Punta Cana opens this summer.

PAW Patrol was one of the first series built in collaboration with a toy company. More than a series, it was designed from the ground up to be a rich, immersive experience—brought to life across multiple touchpoints,” says Drew. “Take Spin Master’s expertise in toys, Nickelodeon’s deep connection with kids and add puppies—PAW Patrol was a win-win-win.”

‘Everybody Loves a Puppy’

The allure of puppies cannot be overstated. “It’s all about the puppies,” says Spin Master’s Dodge. “What is the appeal of the show? Puppies. What makes it so universally popular? Puppies. Everybody loves a puppy.”

The ensemble cast of six pups, each with a distinct personality, make it easy for kids to relate to at least one of them. Another big draw is Skye, a female puppy who has been instrumental in attracting girls to the show.

“It’s very unusual to have a property, especially among preschoolers, that sells down both the girl and boy aisles,” says Drew. “This dual-gender appeal is increasingly important in the kids’ business and has been a key factor in PAW’s continued success.”

Additional pups and secondary characters have been rotated in to keep storylines fresh. There have also been new themes introduced each season and the direct-to-video movies offer opportunities to create new product lines.

“Big, promotable content events help to keep audiences engaged across platforms,” says Senior Vice President of Nickelodeon Preschool Eryk Casemiro, who oversees production and development of content for that age group across all formats and platforms.

And then there are the themes that run through each episode and special: teamwork, community service, and rescue. Those are natural “play patterns” this age group engages in. “The thing that sets PAW Patrol apart from other shows is how playable it is,” says Pete Robinson, chief operating officer of KidsKnowBest, a U.K.-based kids marketing and research firm.

It also gets a celebrity boost thanks to celebrity parents who love to talk PAW Patrol. Mila Kunis and Tyler Perry lamented to Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show how difficult it is to get the theme song out of their heads. Keira Knightly told him it’s “toddler crack.” James McAvoy posted an image of himself watching a movie wrapped in a PAW Patrol sleeping bag. Mario Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Ciara have all posted pictures posing with their kids and some of the pups.

‘Strong, Growing, and Fresh’

Now entering its seventh 26-episode season, PAW Patrol continues to thrive with “long-term plans in place to keep it strong, growing, and fresh,” according to Nickelodeon’s Drew.

Says Dodge, “in 2020, the pups will go on new missions in new locations combining classic themes, which resonate with the preschool audience.”

Another future mission will bring the pups to movie theaters. Slated for release in August 2021, the animated feature film is a Spin Master Entertainment production in association with Nickelodeon Movies, distributed by Paramount Pictures.

“PAW’s big-screen debut solidifies its position among preschool’s all-time biggest franchises, and there is so much more to come,” says Drew. “As they say, PAW Patrol is definitely on a roll.”

ViacomCBS has announced the pup-tastic news that the Nickelodeon-branded hotel and resort in the Dominican Republic, operated by Karisma Hotel & Resorts, will be opening a PAW villa inspired by Nickelodeon's beloved CG-animated series PAW Patrol during summer 2020!

The PAW Patrol villa will join other attractions and activities already available at the family-friendly Nickelodeon hotel, including The Pineapple, a hotel room in the shape of a giant pineapple inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants' iconic home, the Aqua Nick water park playground, daily slimings, a luxurious spa and five-star restaurants - slime smoothie anyone? Fans can already meet PAW Patrol costumed characters - as well as costumed characters inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants, Dora the Explorer, Fairly OddParents and more - at the hotel.

The news follows Karisma revealing plans to open a Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts hotel in Cartagena, Colombia. A second Nick Hotel, Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya, will open in Mexico later this year.
