Yippie Skippy, #TeamDanceWitKel is still going strong!

After competing together on season 28 of Dancing With the Stars, Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson are teaming up once again. ET have revealed that Witney will guest star alongside Kel in an All That"Good Burger" revival sketch airing on Nickelodeon in 2020!

"This is going to be cool. The fans wanted a Good Burger dance [on DWTS], and now they're going to get it!" Kel teased to ET. "It's Good Burger and Dancing!"

"So many fans wanted us to do a Good Burger dance routine but it just never fit during the season," added Witney. "We had talked about this for a long time, but we have kept it a secret for, I would say, months."

Update (1/24/2020) - Click here to watch a super sneak peek on etonline.com!

Update (1/14/2020) - Nickelodeon will premiere Witney Carson's episode of All That on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT)! In the episode, #1116, SWTS' Witney Carson goes to Good Burger, T. Smith has an album preview, All That presents a new way to learn Spanish, and Nathan cancels gum! Plus America's Most Musical Family winners The Melisizwe Brothers perform their new song “Stadium”!

Kel will reprise his hilarious role as cashier Ed from the original '90s sketch comedy show, whose most memorable line was, "Welcome to Good Burger, home of the good burger, can I take your order?" Witney, meanwhile, will play herself.

"Before I even asked anybody, I was like, 'Hey, Witney, you wanna do a sketch on All That?' She was like, WHAT? Of course!" Kel, who is an executive producer on the series with Kenan Thompson, explained of how the cameo came to be. "So then I was like, 'We need to have Witney on here.' I talked to the other producers and they were like, 'OK, which [sketch] should we have her do?' They wrote me back and said the writers decided we should do Good Burger, which is pretty cool."

"I told Kel, 'If I have a skit with you, I'm just playing myself... don't make me play a character,'" Witney recalled. "I haven't really acted before, so I was like, 'I'll do it if I can play myself.' Kel told me to have fun and just go for it; don't be afraid and just feed off the audience."

The tables have certainly turned, as acting put Witney out of her element and comfort zone, much like dancing the salsa, foxtrot and more on DWTS did for Kel. But according to the comedian, his former dance partner crushed her scenes!

"She's been doing great with the acting. It's cool seeing her eyes light up," he shared. "She used to watch the show when she was a kid, so it's pretty cool seeing her on the set, asking questions. It's literally like how I was on the first day of Dancing With the Stars. I was like, 'OK, so this is where we dance, that's where the judges are.' Now it's like, This is Good Burger, this is where the burgers are... 'are these real fries?' It's totally flipped now!"

Witney chimed in, telling ET the whole experience has been "crazy" and "really nerve-wracking."

"I never really get nervous for dancing or anything, but this is so different from what I usually do," she said. "Now I'm in Kel's world and I am super honored to be on All That. It's such an iconic show."

Shot in front of a live studio audience, All That also stars Ryan Alessi, Reece Caddell, Kate Godfrey, Gabrielle Nevaeh Green, Nathan Janak, Lex Lumpkin and Chinguun Sergelen, with new cast member Aria Brooks joining the ensemble of comedians in January.

"All the kids are playing the judges as well, so that's going to be funny," Kel teased. "You get to see a funny version of Bruno Tonioli, Len Goodman and Carrie Ann Inaba. You're also going to see some burgers and shakes dancing around. It's going to be awesome!"

"These kids are so freaking cute ... they play it so well, it's spot-on," added Witney. "They are so talented and they've actually given me so much support. They're like, 'You're going to do great!' and they're like, 13. I'm like, Help me!"

In addition to filming the episode for Nickelodeon, Witney and Kel have also been busy in rehearsals for the Dancing With the Stars -- Live Tour 2020, which kicks off Jan. 9 in Richmond, Virginia. Kel will perform as a special guest when the cast heads to California for tour stops in Riverside, Costa Mesa, San Diego, Indio and Los Angeles. He'll also join the cast in Phoenix, Arizona, on March 27.

"I'm a dancer now, so we go 100 percent! We're doing some salsa in the show and I'm also hosting with Kate Flannery, so that's going to be fun," Kel shared. "Me and Kate work well together, so that's going to be awesome."

"It's the longest tour we've ever done, so we're putting a lot of energy, a lot of work into the show," added Witney. "We're all excited. It's really about the fans. We're going to give it our all and perform for them, because we wouldn't be here without them."

Last month, Kenan showed Kel and Witney plenty of love in the days leading up to the DWTS finale, where they placed second after Hannah Brown and Alan Bersten.

"He's crushing it!" Kenan raved at the time. "He's going all the way. I think he's going to win."

"Yeah, he's been dancing for forever," he added. "I've had the pleasure of witnessing it all of our lives but now America gets to see it. I'm happy for him, man. Go get that, man. Win that thing!"

In the end, Kel and Witney came a very respectable second place.

New episodes of All That return this January on Nickelodeon. In the meantime, hear more in the video on etonline.com!

'DWTS' Pro Witney Carson Guest Starring on 'All That' With Kel Mitchell -- See the First Look! (Exclusive)

Yippie Skippy, #TeamDanceWitKel is still going strong!

After competing together on season 28 of Dancing With the Stars, Kel Mitchell and Witney Carson are teaming up once again. ET exclusively revealed back in December that Witney would be guest-starring alongside Kel in an All That "Good Burger" revival sketch, and now, we have your exclusive first look at what to expect.

Kel will reprise his hilarious role as cashier Ed from the original '90s sketch comedy show, whose most memorable line was, "Welcome to Good Burger, home of the good burger, can I take your order?" Witney, meanwhile, will play herself.

In a teaser clip from the episode, airing Saturday, Jan. 25 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon, Ed gets starstruck when Witney stops by the fast-food restaurant. "Yeah, you're on that show with the dancing! Yeah, the dancing, with the stars," he exclaims. "I don't know the name of the show though."

"You should have won. You were robbed," he continues. "You would have got first if you didn't have that lousy dance partner. This Kel guy."

Witney chimes in, saying, "What? Kel was great. Can I just order, please?" Watch the full clip in the player above to see what happens next!

Speaking with ET in December, Kel previously teased that the episode was going to be "so cool."

Alberta’s The Melisizwe Brothers win ‘America’s Most Musical Family’ competition

Three brothers from the Edmonton area were crowned the winners of America’s Most Musical Family this past weekend, winning a recording contract with Republic Records and USD $250,000.

The Melisizwe Brothers — pronounced mel-li-seize-way — live in Leduc and take their inspiration from the Jackson 5.

The trio consists of 12-year-old lead vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Zacary James, 13-year-old lead pianist and back-up singer Seth James, and 16-year-old lead guitarist and back-up singer Marc James.

The James brothers chose the South African name “Melisizwe” because it means “leaders of the future” — and their future looks bright after winning Nickelodeon’s America’s Most Musical Family.

The sibling trio competed against 30 other family bands from across North America in front of three celebrity judges: singer Ciara, digital media sensation David Dobrik, pop icon and Broadway star Debbie Gibson, along with show host, singer and television personality Nick Lachey.

The Nickelodeon TV competition premiered on Nov. 1, 2019.

Over the course of the season, bands were eliminated through a process of the judges nominating their top picks of the week, and the show’s live studio audience selecting which of those bands should move to the next round.

During the two-hour long finale, the audience voted The Melisizwe Brothers to be the winning band after they performed Brave by Sara Bareilles and 7 Years by Lukas Graham.

The Melisizwe Brothers were first introduced to audiences with a performance of All of Me by John Legend — a song they performed in 2013 at their school talent show at Ecole Corinthia Park, in Leduc, located about 20 kilometres south of Edmonton.

The show said the performers continued to stand out throughout the competition with moving performances of Water Runs Dry by Boyz II Men, Waiting On The World To Change by John Mayer and Let It Go by James Bay.

Following the finale, The Melisizwe Brothers released their new original single, Stadium, as part of their contract with Republic Records — a division of Universal Music Group.

The boys became internet sensations in 2016 when a video of them singing a Jackson 5 song went viral.

They have since appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, America’s Got Talent, and Showtime at the Apollo, and Zacary was chosen to sing the theme song on the Netflix animated series Motown Magic.

The Melisizwe Brothers will be performing their new single on Nickelodeon’s All That on Saturday, Jan. 25, and live on TODAY with Hoda & Jenna on Wednesday, Jan. 22.

From CTV News Edmonton:

'America's Most Musical Family' is from Leduc, Alta.

EDMONTON -- Recent winners of an American talent show and Republic Records’ newest artists aren’t just Canadian, but proudly hail from Leduc, Alta.

The Melisizwe Brothers were awarded a $250,000 recording contract after being named America’s Most Musical Family by Nickelodeon.

“It was really exciting because of what was to come in the future,” said the middle of the trio, 13-year-old Seth James.

“A lot of overwhelming emotions, but mostly happy emotions because that moment will stick with me for the rest of my life.”

The Nickelodeon program is a competition between 30 musically talented families.

In the Jan. 17 finale, Seth and his brothers Zachary and Marc performed Sara Bareilles’ Brave and Lukas Graham’s 7 Years.

“We just really practiced, we really worked hard, and I had to really give it my all every time I was on that stage,” Zachary told CTV News Edmonton, “because we knew there was a chance we were going to win this.”

Sixteen-year-old Marc added, “The experience, we’re never going to forget it.”

The group spoke to CTV News Edmonton while riding to New York City’s LaGuardia Airport on Thursday, having gone to the city to tape a segment on the Today show.

Next week, they’ll be flying to L.A. to promote their single Stadium on some of the late-night TV shows.

The brothers’ father, Mark, said the busy week of TV sets and travelling only symbolizes the significance of where his sons were raised.

“That’s a big question that most parents ask: how do we keep a balance? … It’s always a two-prong approach for us: the international stuff, but making sure we come home and always give back,” Mark told CTV News Edmonton.

“It was a small city that grew the boys,” he said, adding hometown friends and family have all been very supportive.

The Melisizwe Brothers said they were excited to be writing and touring in the coming months – but first, to be home for a little while.

The America’s Most Musical Family finale airs in Canada on Friday at 7 p.m. on YTV.

On Saturday, a performance of their single Stadium will air on Nickelodeon’s All That.

Below is Viacom International Studios' official press release in Latin American Español:

Guillermo Sierra, HITN, USA: ‘Kids y material educativo tech.

NUEVAS PRODUCCIONES, ALIANZAS Y LANZAMIENTOS

It's currently unknown whether Nickelodeon's Ed the Good Burger Guy from All That (played by Kel Mitchell) or Pick Boy (Jeff Sutphen) will also be on hand at the opening night of Super Bowl 54, as in previous years.

From the South Florida Sun Sentinel:

Nickelodeon turns Aventura into Slime City ... for the whole family

Get ready slime-ballers. Slime City Miami, a new pop-up experience that allow fans to play with the iconic green goo, is heading to Aventura Mall Dec. 6-Jan. 20.

The ooey gooey installation, which was first staged in Atlanta this summer, is moving to South Florida because the region is such a fun-time destination, according to spokesman John-Michael Hines.

“Miami is a city with something for everyone, something for every family,” Hines says. “And Aventura Mall is one of the most popular malls in the country.”

Hines is the general manager of Feld Entertainment, which is producing Slime City Miami for Nickelodeon.

What can you actually do?
Hines says the first Slime City was themed around Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, but that Slime City Miami will have a beach theme.

Inside the 20,000 square foot space, participants can get slime-tastic by:

- Slime HQ: You can touch slime and play with various wheels and levers.

- Slime Central: You get a poncho so that when you get slime dumped on you, it won’t stain your clothes. You can go into a solo slime tank for a VIP add-on ticket.

- Great Wall of Slime: You can push in the oversized pins or move large levers in the wall to make different shapes or impressions (great for Instagram shots).

- Slime Bubble-Torium: The slime bubbles are really large balloons that kids can throw and kick around (and yes, even pop on occasion).

- Slime Lab: If you purchase an add-on ticket, you can go inside this slime workshop and create your own take-home slime concoction.

The history of Nickelodeon’s slime

Today, two or three generations now think of slime as being synonymous with Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards, when TV, movie and pop music stars risk getting a vat of viscous green slop (the formula is vanilla pudding, apple sauce, green food coloring and oatmeal) dumped on them.

But the idea first made it onto television in Canada in a show called “You Can’t Do That on Television," which was also broadcast in the States in the ’80s. Later, the Nickelodeon game show “Double Dare” made sliming a regular thing on the cable channel for children, using it on shows such as “Wild and Crazy Kids,” “Figure It Out" and “Weinerville." When Nickelodeon moved the slime attack to their awards show, it went viral, before going viral was even a thing.

Slimers will also want to know that Nickelodeon is staging SlimeFest music festival March 21-22, 2020, at the Forum in Inglewood, California. The bill for the two-day, family-friendly event will include French Montana, Blanco Brown and JoJo Siwa and culminate in the live broadcast of Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards 2020 (also from the Forum) on March 22. 'SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated' Gets Two Special Editions

First revealed back in June, THQ Nordic and Nickelodeon have announced that SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, the remake of the much-loved GameCube-era platformer, is getting not one, but two special editions that include a whole load of physical SpongeBob goodies. You might want to start saving now for its non-specific '2020' release date, though, because they won't come cheap - especially the F.U.N. Edition.

Update (1/20/2020) - Nintendo has reportedly announced that SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated will be released on Friday, May 22, 2020!

Update (1/25/2020) - Nintendo may have accidentally let slip SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated's release date, because publisher THQ Nordic has said they haven't even decided on one yet. Also, a version of this game is $300. Hopefully the magic Conch Shell will announce the release date soon!

The first of the two bundles is the Shiny Edition. You can view it the trailer below and it includes the following:

- An 8"/20cm SpongeBob Figurine with Golden Spatula and flexible tongue
- Wallstickers
- 6 Lithographs
- SpongeBob SquarePants tennis socks
- The Game itself
- SRP: $149.99/€149.99/£139.99

The gorgeously sculpted and painted 8″/20cm miniature statue of SpongeBob depicts him wielding his Golden Spatula and letting loose a thunderous tongue-flicking victory screech as his trusty pet snail Gary gives him a perplexed look.

The pricier and shinier F.U.N. Edition, which you'll see in the trailer below, includes all that plus some extras:

- An 8"/20cm SpongeBob Figurine with Golden Spatula and flexible tongue
- A 7"/18cm Figurine of Patrick
- The Sandy 8"/20cm Figurine
- Wallstickers
- A set of Tiki Keyrings
- 6 Lithographs
- SpongeBob SquarePants tennis socks
- The Game itself
- SRP: $299.99/€299.99/£259.99

The statues and assorted goodies certainly look lovely, and even though they are a bit pricier than just buying the game, die-hard SpongeBob fans may well be tempted by these treasure troves.

Both editions will be available for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch when the game launches in 2020 and are ready for pre-orders now.

While Amazon UK is showing all editions available to pre-order now, the U.S. branch at this time has all editions listed as "Currently Unavailable".

An updated edition of the much-loved 2003 platform adventure, Battle for Bikini Bottom has been remade from scratch by Austrian developer Purple Lamp Studios, rebuilding the original's colorful world and characters for a whole new generation of video game and SpongeBob fans. Players take control of Patrick, Sandy and, of course, SpongeBob himself, in a quest to thwart the evil Plankton and his nefarious schemes.

If you missed the original announcement of the remake back in June, here's a summary of the salient points from the official blurb:

- Play as SpongeBob, Patrick and Sandy and use their unique sets of skills
- Thwart Plankton's evil plan to rule Bikini Bottom with his army of wacky robots
- Meet countless characters from the beloved series
- Faithful remake of one of the best SpongeBob games ever created
- High-end visuals, modern resolutions and carefully polished gameplay
- Brand new horde mode multiplayer for up to two players, online and offline
- Restored content that was cut from the original game like the Robo Squidward boss fight and more

Are you fan enough to splash out on these special submarinal editions? Let me know how far your fandom goes with a comment in the usual place.

'Happy Happy Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story' Documentary to Receive World Premiere at 2020 Sundance Film Festival

The Sundance Institute has announced that the 2020 Sundance Film Festival will host the world premiere of Happy Happy Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story, a brand new documentary exploring the rise and fall of the groundbreaking animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show and its controversial creator, John Kricfalusi - whose abusive relationship with an underage woman destroyed his once-celebrated career - through archival footage, show artwork and interviews with the artists, actors and executives behind the show.

Update (1/18/2020) - Deadline has released a sneak peek from the documentary, which you can watch on Deadline.com.

“It’s wild and disturbing,” said Sundance director John Cooper. “It’s not trying to make the show separate from the creator. That’s what we hoped to see in it.”

From production industry veterans Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood, Happy Happy Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story is a crowdfunded documentary that has been in development for a couple of years, before Ralph Bakshi acolyte Kricfalusi's highly inappropriate behavior came to light. When the docu was first pitched, it was set to "delve deep into the world of Ren the rage-fueled chihuahua and Stimpy the simpleton cat. The filmmakers’ goal is to show that the creativity that fueled the animated series is akin to the intrepid genius and controversial merit of Banksy and Warhol."

Happy Happy Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story is produced by Ron Cicero, and features the cast of: John Kricfalusi, Robyn Byrd, Vanessa Coffey, Chris Reccardi, Richard Pursel, and Bobby Lee.

Ren & Stimpy premiered on August 11, 1991 as one of the original Nicktoons, alongside Rugrats and Doug, and followed the chaotic adventures of a psychotic Chihuahua (Marland “Ren” T. Höek) and dimwitted Cat (Stimpson “Stimpy” J. Cat). The series ran on Nickelodeon for 5 seasons and spawned the spin-off Ren & Stimpy Adult Party Cartoon in 2003.

The 2020 Sundance Film Festival takes place between Jan 23 - Feb 2, 2020 in Park City, Utah. For more information, visit: https://www.sundance.org.

From sundance.org:

Happy Happy Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story

In the early 1990s, the animated show Ren & Stimpy broke cable ratings records and was a touchstone for a generation of fans and artists. Creator John Kricfalusi was celebrated as a visionary, but even though his personality suffused the show, dozens of artists and network executives were just as responsible for the show’s meteoric rise. As Kricfalusi’s worst impulses were let loose at the workplace and new allegations about even more disturbing behavior have surfaced, his reputation now threatens to taint the show forever.

With clips recognizable to any Ren & Stimpy fan and interviews with Kricfalusi and his fellow creators whose work has been both elevated and denigrated by their connection to him, this film is a complex look at a show that influenced the history of television, animation, and comedy. More than a celebration, Happy Happy Joy Joy - The Ren & Stimpy Story forces us to consider the role of media creators and how we reckon with the reality of who they are versus what we see on the screen.

From Deadline:

‘Happy Happy Joy Joy’ Clip: First Look At ‘Ren & Stimpy’ Documentary Headed To Sundance

EXCLUSIVE: How to describe The Ren & Stimpy Show, that bizarre, you-had-to-be-there ’90s animated series that carved a niche for itself on the kid-friendly Nickelodeon channel without being all that kid-friendly itself? (Well, depending on what kind of kid you were…)

In this exclusive clip from the upcoming Sundance Film Festival documentary Happy Happy Joy Joy, comics (including Bobby Lee) and fans try to describe the outrageous, grotesque and very funny series in one sentence. One or two come close.

Premiering at this month’s Sundance as part of the Documentary Premieres section, Happy Happy Joy Joy (a catchphrase from the series) is co-directed by Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood, who set themselves the task of illuminating “the joy, beauty, and lasting impact of Ren & Stimpy” while also examining the cartoon’s creator John Kricfalusi, a man described as a brilliant animator and storyteller as well as a deeply flawed person. Press materials for the documentary say Kricfalusi “both caused and experienced trauma that deeply affected his work and relationships.”

Through archival footage, show artwork, and interviews with the artists, actors, and executives behind the show, Happy Happy Joy Joy explores what happens when “artistic genius goes awry.”

Written and directed by Cicero and Easterwood, Happy Happy Joy Joy is exec produced by Cicero, with Easterwood as director of photography. Kevin Klauber produces.

The doc will have its press and industry screening January 24 at the Park Avenue Theatre before its world premiere Tuesday, January 28 at the Library Center Theatre.

Check out the exclusive clip [on Deadline.com].

From io9:

Happy Happy, Joy Joy - The Ren and Stimpy Story

Despite what the title suggests, this documentary about the cult Nickelodeon show isn’t all positive. It goes through the history of the show but will focus heavily on recent accusations of underage sexual abuse by its creator John Kricfalusi.

###

From TheWrap:

‘Happy Happy Joy Joy’ Film Review: ‘Ren & Stimpy’ Doc Celebrates Animation But Shies Away From Darker Subjects

Sundance 2020: Sexual misconduct accusations against creator John Kricfalusi have forever tainted the legacy of this cult series, but the movie avoids that topic as much as possible

Don’t be fooled by the title: “Happy Happy Joy Joy: The Ren & Stimpy Story” may be the story of “Ren & Stimpy,” but it’s not a happy, happy story documentary, nor does it evoke joy or joy.

Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood’s film about the smash hit Nickelodeon animated series and its many artists, and series creator John Kricfalusi in particular, features interesting behind-the-scenes stories but pads the running time with redundancies. Worse, it never adequately engages with the most horrifying elements of this tale.

To watch cartoons in the early 1990s was to watch “Ren & Stimpy,” a trailblazing series about an emotionally abusive chihuahua named Ren, a good-natured doormat of a cat named Stimpy, and their gross, non-sensical, censorship-defying adventures. “Ren & Stimpy” was a critical and commercial success, crass in its subject matter but beautiful in its execution. It smashed expectations of TV animation, which had hitherto been relatively low on American networks. Plus, it was really, really, really gross.

It’s nothing short of amazing that a show like “Ren & Stimpy” — a series for little kids with episodes about pectoral replacement surgery and weepy relationships with anthropomorphic farts — got made at all. That’s the story that “Happy Happy Joy Joy” is happiest-happiest and most joyful-joyful to tell. For a long time, it’s a plucky, can-do story about a group of ambitious young artists who united under Kricfalusi to produce unique animation. A rags to riches story. A story of rock stars.

And, like any rock star biopic, the animators at Spümcø, Inc. were destined for a fall. Kricfalusi’s passion for animation, wild pitching style and extreme perfectionism, celebrated at the beginning of his career, led to abusive relationships with his employees and antagonistic relationships with Nickelodeon. He wasn’t the only artist to let his ego undermine his career but, as one of “Happy Happy Joy Joy’s” many interview subjects sums it up: “Nobody else worked harder to f–k it up than this guy.”

For nearly 90 minutes, “Happy Happy Joy Joy” is a sentimental look back at the history and significance of “Ren & Stimpy.” Cicero and Easterwood lay out the events that transpired and, just as importantly, the artistic innovations that “Ren & Stimpy” either pioneered or reimagined. Various scenes from multiple episodes are broken down in some riveting analyses of the craft, displaying how the animation geniuses at Spümcø, Inc. used elastic, off-model characterizations and extreme expressionistic storytelling to shock and engage the audience at the same time.

Unfortunately, not every aspect of “The Ren & Stimpy Story” is equally enthralling, and “Happy Happy Joy Joy” frequently resorts to sequences of multiple interview subjects saying basically the same thing, or sharing anecdotes that are redundant or go nowhere. Spümcø co-founder Lynne Naylor has one story about pickles that just gradually peters off into non-existence, which is somewhat whimsical but wholly off-topic.

What’s more frustrating is “Happy Happy Joy Joy’s” tendency to break from its narrative flow and occasionally just cut to more talking heads so they can rave about how great “Ren & Stimpy” was. That’s all well and good, but sheesh, we’re an hour into the movie and we’re all on the same page by now. The time has long since come to move on.

And the time to address the disturbing elephant in the room has long since passed by the time “Happy Happy Joy Joy” finally gets to John Kricfalusi’s disturbing relationship with an underage, aspiring animator. Ordinarily a development so incredibly shocking would be front-and-center in a documentary like this, but — perhaps in an effort to primarily focus on the “Ren & Stimpy” parts — the filmmakers haven’t just buried the lede, they’ve practically hidden the headstone.

It’s not that “Happy Happy Joy Joy” completely ignores the story; Robyn Byrd appears halfway through the documentary to talk about writing fan mail about the series, and the filmmakers pointedly leave in a candid moment where Kricfalusi lewdly licks his lips and makes uncomfortable remarks about the woman doing his makeup before an interview. But these foreshadowings don’t build organically to the film’s conclusion, nor does the film spend nearly enough time discussing how the history of “Ren & Stimpy” has been forever tainted by the actions of its credited creator.

In its final 15 minutes, at least, “Happy Happy Joy Joy” does ask some serious and significant questions about the cartoon’s legacy. Can a show with so many twisted, tasteless jokes still be enjoyed now that we know what we now know about John Kricfalusi? Robyn Byrd has a thoughtful answer, but the discussion probably demands a little more screen time than is given to Jack Black to talk about how neat “Ren & Stimpy” was when it first came out.

And since “Happy Happy Joy Joy” includes new interview footage with Kricfalusi, the filmmakers do confront him directly about his life, an opportunity he uses predominantly to excuse himself. The film concludes with a bizarre moment from the animator as he completely plays down the most disturbing parts of his life. It’s odd to give Kricfalusi the last word, and what he does with the opportunity is most unpleasant.

Cicero and Easterwood’s film plays a lot like a loving ode to a beloved children’s series that got hijacked all of a sudden by harsh reality, and it doesn’t handle the transition well. For “Ren & Stimpy” fans, the documentary has an enormous amount of value, taking us behind the scenes of a fascinating chapter in animation history. But for documentary fans, it’s a haphazardly paced and awkwardly structured film that struggles to organically incorporate each facet of the tragic “Ren & Stimpy” story, ultimately giving too short a shrift to the greatest tragedy of all.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

'Happy Happy Joy Joy — the Ren & Stimpy Story': Film Review | Sundance 2020

THE BOTTOM LINE

A cliched portrait of difficult genius undermines a layered portrait of a classic TV show. TWITTER

Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood's documentary covers the rise and fall of 'The Ren & Stimpy Show' and of creator John Kricfalusi.
Happy Happy Joy Joy — the Ren & Stimpy Story, a documentary premiering at the Sundance Film Festival, has a John Kricfalusi problem.

Based on watching Happy Happy Joy Joy — the Ren & Stimpy Story, "having a John Kricfalusi problem" seems to have been a common affliction for those working on and associated with the iconic animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show.

Happy Happy Joy Joy follows Kricfalusi and the supernova that was Ren & Stimpy, which arrived at a moment when animation had become a soulless, mechanized process driven by selling toys and not artistic considerations. Kricfalusi, as the story goes, somehow convinced Nickelodeon to bankroll an unconventional comedy about a sociopathic dog, an amiably addled cat and their adventures that veered into the grotesque, scatological and absurd. Kricfalusi restored an auteurist stamp to animation and, surrounded by a remarkable and demented team of artists, became a short-lived sensation before he was forced to abandon his creation and retreat into eccentric obscurity. Or that's the basic story.

As depicted by directors Ron Cicero and Kimo Easterwood, Kricfalusi was a troubled genius of the sort movies and television have been glorifying for decades. He was brilliant and unconventional and wildly ahead of his time, influential and uncontainable. He was also self-destructive and the reason we have so few episodes of Ren & Stimpy is because of his inability and his refusal to work within the system that brought him fame and to treat the employees who facilitated that fame properly. His is a tragic story, but one in which the victims were primarily viewers denied more greatness and Kricfalusi for his self-inflicted wounds.

If you believe that's the end of the conversation and if you love Ren & Stimpy, chances are good that you'll love Happy Happy Joy Joy. Cicero and Easterwood place Kricfalusi front-and-center and they have assembled an assortment of Kricfalusi's Ren & Stimpy collaborators that borders on all-encompassing. From background artists to character animators to some of the biggest names in the show's lore, including early partners like Bob Camp and Lynne Naylor, Nickelodeon's Vanessa Coffey and even the late Chris Reccardi, who died last year.

The insight into what made Ren & Stimpy unique is exceptional, delving into Kricfalusi's untrained vocal work, those ultra-disgusting cutaway close-ups and several specific episodes, like the notoriously banned "Man's Best Friend," which Kricfalusi links closely to his troubled relationship with his father.

Whether or not it's true, Happy Happy Joy Joy feels like it was deep into production when a 2018 Buzzfeed article accused Kricfalusi of befriending a 13-year-old Robyn Byrd, whom he groomed in sexual terms and moved into his apartment when she was only 16 — a "relationship" that continued with an undercurrent of psychological abuse and left Byrd with shattered confidence and unable to find employment in Hollywood. All signs point to Byrd as having not been the only underage girl in Kricfalusi's sphere and, both in the Buzzfeed article and today, Kricfalusi doesn't deny the generalities of the situation, only Byrd's darkest interpretations. So this part is not an allegation.

Cicero and Easterwood have no idea how to handle the information in that Buzzfeed story, even with Byrd as a candid, but not too candid, talking head in the documentary. As presented here, the "relationship" was almost a symptom of years of struggles after he was booted from Ren & Stimpy and not a part of a long-running pattern of behavior. Byrd's revelations aren't mentioned until nearly 90 minutes into the film and that's even after she was introduced as a 13-year-old fan sending letters to the series' creator. The directors gently push Kricfalusi for an unspecified apology, which he begrudgingly gives as part of a creepy plea for Byrd to contact him, positioning the entire situation as something unsavory and less-than-kosher, but far from borderline criminal. Make no mistake: Byrd's Buzzfeed allegations are borderline criminal. From there, the documentary barely gets into additional accusations from the Buzzfeed article of similarly groomed young women, as well as long-running workplace harassment and more.

Kricfalusi denied many of the charges in the Buzzfeed article and doesn't appear to have been asked to repeat those denials here, but it's hard to stomach how his workplace "crimes" are presented as nothing worse than intense, childish and hyperactive behavior and how sanitized the documentary is up until Byrd's on-camera accusations. And it's unsettling how the several celebrities who appear on camera lauding Ren & Stimpy — Iliza Shlesinger, Bobby Lee, Jack Black — are allowed to give their praise for the series and none of them can give even an "Eww" to any behind-the-scenes stories. I almost want footnotes to say which interviews were conducted before the Buzzfeed story broke and which were conducted after, who had incentive to reckon with the totality of the story and who talked when it was a generally less complicated story — because a lot of the shrugging about "Boys will be boys!" rambunctiousness at Kricfalusi's Spumco Studio plays mighty differently with this not insignificant context, context the filmmakers withhold until far later.

As Byrd says of Kricfalusi — and the bad-boy genius myth — point-blank, "It's not necessary for someone to be like that to create great art."

That should probably be the last word in this documentary. Probably it should be the first word as well. Naturally, it's not. Kricfalusi has to get the last word.

Even having read the Buzzfeed story two years ago, I spent the first hour of Happy Happy Joy Joy guiltily feeling like I needed a rewatch of Ren & Stimpy — it's an important series and there's no pretending otherwise — and the next 35 minutes feeling dirty about the whole thing and the last 10 minutes getting actively angry about how the entire story had been framed and reduced to "difficult genius" cliches.

Nickelodeon's The Crystal Maze is an all-new version of the legendary UK hit series. The Crystal Maze will feature comedian/writer Adam Conover as the Maze Master, charged with guiding one family team through physical and mental challenges set within an elaborate labyrinth of four giant and immersive themed zones: Aztec, Eastern, Futuristic and Industrial.

The premiere episode of The Crystal Maze will feature a family from Houston, Texas, tackling a range of challenges in the maze for the first time ever for U.S. audiences. This season will feature families from: Scottsdale, Ariz; Lake Forest, Calif; Eastvale, Calif ; St. Augustine, Fla; Windemere, Fla; Chester, Va; Germantown, Tenn; Carollton, Texas; and Wheaton, Ill.

In each episode, the youngest family member takes on the role of team Captain. The successful completion of escape-room style challenges are rewarded with a “time crystal” granting the family five seconds in the centerpiece final zone called the Crystal Dome. The more crystals gathered throughout the game, the more time each family has for a dramatic clock countdown challenge inside the iconic Dome for a chance to win up to $25,000.

A current ratings smash in the UK, The Crystal Maze has been a beloved family and cult favorite since the mid ‘90s, with the current global popularity of the escape room phenomena reigniting interest further. The show was recently rebooted to great success with celebrity, charity and family seasons in UK, Australia and beyond.

The Crystal Maze is co-produced by Bunim/Murray Productions (The Real World, The Challenge, Born This Way) and RDF Television (Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, Wife Swap, Shipwrecked) under parent company Banijay Group. Gil Goldschein and Maria Pepin from Bunim/Murray Productions, Neale Simpson from Fizz, part of RDF Television, and Stephen David from Stephen David Entertainment serve as executive producers. Production of The Crystal Maze for Nickelodeon is overseen by Rob Bagshaw, Executive Vice President, Unscripted Content.

Production on the new series (10 one-hour episodes) took place on the show's original set located at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, England, earlier this summer.

Devised by Jacques Antoine, the UK version of The Crystal Maze was originally hosted by Richard O'Brien (Rocky Horror), followed by Ed Tudor-Pole. The reboot was originally presented by Stephen Merchant (for Stand Up To Cancer), and currently by Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd, Travel Man) with his "hand." The show's theme song is the legendary "Force Field", below. The show is currently filmed at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol.

Netflix to Premiere 'Glitch Techs' on Friday, February 21, 2020

Update (1/22/2020) - Netflix will premiere Glitch Techs on Friday, February 21, 2020!

Update (1/25) - When asked on Twitter about the future of the production of the series, which was halted during the middle of the second season, Glitch Techs co-creator Eric Robles revealed: "First 10 will drop Feb. then another 10 later. Which still leaves us with an additional 10 that have been written and boarded and are waiting to get animated. So make sure to watch and let Nick and Netflix know if you want them all!!! 😉"

Something Glitchy This Way Comes.. Nickelodeon's brand-new animated adventure-comedy series follows two newly recruited kids as they battle video game monsters that come to life in the real world.

This brand new animated series features High Five and Miko, two gamers who are recruited into the world of Glitch Techs: kids who battle the video game glitches that enter our world through faulty game consoles!

In the world of Glitch Techs, Hinobi is a huge gaming and tech company that makes massively popular video games consoles. What Hinobi customers do NOT know is that their games sometimes glitch and release dangerous video game creatures into the real world! That’s when the company send the Glitch Techs: a trained support team equipped with an arsenal of fantastic gaming gear designed to capture video game pests and out them back where they belong!

Once a glitch is returned, the Techs must remove any evidence it was there – including the memories of any witnesses! Not only do Glitch Techs fight for the safety of the city, they also work at Hinobi stores, helping customers with tech support and service needs.

Enter Miko and high Five – new recruits who fight glitches and reformat witnesses all before the store closes at 5pm. Talk about a crazy job! Respect the Tech!

Glitch Techs comes from Eric Robles (Fanboy & Chum Chum, The X's, Ni Hao, Kai-Lan) and Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny, Warren the Ape), both hailing from Nickelodeon's Artist Collective, an internal artist-led development program, and is produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, Calif. Nickelodeon has picked-up Glitch Techs for an initial 20-episode first season. A second season was commissioned, however, Nickelodeon halted production half-way through.

Glitch Techs will boast a multi-ethnic cast, including a Muslim-American female character who will wear a hijab. At a industry panel held late last year, the co-creators explained that when they were developing Glitch Techs, they “recognized the need to incorporate characters reflective of the viewing audience, whether they are background characters or main characters,” and revealed that they had worked with MPAC (Muslim Public Affairs Council) to “figure out how to accurately display an authenticity, even down to little behaviors.” Dan Milano further elaborated, “Even though we’re an animated show and they are trying to catch creatures, we want small things. We want to know that a stray hair came out of that hijab, and she had to tuck it behind her ear because that’s a human moment, that’s a practical moment, from everyday life.”

It was recently announced that Emmy-award winning actor Bryton James (Winx Club, The Young and the Restless) will be voicing a character in Nickelodeon Glitch Techs.

Glitch Techs stars Ricardo Hurtado as High Five, Monica Ray as Miko, Luke Youngblood as Mitch, Sandeep Parikh as Haneesh, Zehra Fazal as Zahra, Josh Sussman as Bergy, Eric Lopez as Papi, Dan Milano as BITT and Scott Kreamer as Phil, as well as Scott Kreamer, Betsy Sodaro, Ashly Burch, Greg Nix, Dee Baker, Stephanie Sheh, Jolene Kim, Felicia Day, Cree Summer, Roshon Fegan, Rachael Russakoff, Nolan North and many more.

It looks like Netflix has acquired the rights to Nickelodeon's upcoming animated series Glitch Techs! The series is currently being showcased in a "For Your Consideration" panel on the streaming service.

The news follows Nickelodeon and Netflix forming a new, multi-year output deal to produce original animated feature films and television series - based both on the Nickelodeon library of characters as well as all-new IP - for kids and families around the world. This marks an expansion of the existing relationship between the companies, which has already brought several popular titles to Netflix, including animated specials Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus and the animated series Pinky Malinky. Also forthcoming are specials based on The Loud House and Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Glitch Techs is slated to debut in 2020.

NewBe and Splendid Film, in collaboration with Nickelodeon Benelux, have announced the release one of the world's first-ever theatrical movie about slime!

Titled De Grote Slijmfilm, the movie will star Slime Queen Bibi in the lead role. Slime Queen Bibi is a popular actor who is well-known for her cheerful sketches and DIY slime making videos on YouTube.

Nickelodeon has been synonymous with slime since the number-one entertainment brand for kids introduced the green semi-viscous substance to kids in the 1980's, and Slime is the ultimate symbol of free-spirited mess and the physical embodiment of Nickelodeon's unconventional spirit.

In recent years, slime has become one of the hottest trends with kids around the world, with many videos on YouTube teaching children how to make their own slime. De Grote Slijmfilm will be first time a Dutch movie dedicated to the global slime trend. The adventurous family film is all about friendship, cheerfulness, creativity and slime - a lot of slime!

De Grote Slijmfilm will be released in Dutch cinemas on Wednesday 5th February 2020.

Update (14/1/2020) - To celebrate the release of De Grote Slijmfilm, Bibi will be taking over Nickelodeon during February 2020 with special afternoon marathons of her favourite Nick shows! It all starts Sunday 2nd February 2020 at 11:30 uur!

In De Grote Slijmfilm, Indy (Bibi) and her BFF Olivia (Rómeycia Valentine), like all children around the world, love slime! On international slime day they participate in a competition to make the most original slime. The only one who hates slime is Dominicus Duff (Géza Weisz), the country's biggest toy boss. He no longer sells any of his own toys because of slime's popularity, so he wants to ban and confiscate all the slime in the world. Will Indy and Olivia be able to save slime?

In addition to Bibi's leading role, De Grote Slijmfilm will also star: Géza Weisz (Wiplala, Alleen Maar Nette Mensen), YouTube star Djamila (Misfit 2), Vincent Visser (Brugklas, GTST) and Sarah Nauta (Elvy’s Wereld: So Ibiza!)

The winner of the Youth News Competition 2019, Rómeycia Valentijn, has taken on her very first acting job with her role in the film. Ferdi Stofmeel (De Regels van Floor), Tina de Bruin (Dokter Tinus, Het geheime dagboek van Hendrik Groen), Edson de Graça, comedian and presenter Willem Wever, Belgium actor Tine Embrechts, Belgium presenter Sarah Mouhamou and Nickelodeon star Kate Bensdorp (Evie in Hunter Street) will also feature in the movie.

De Grote Slijmfilm is directed by Hans Somers (Hart Beat, De Ludwigs, Hunter Street) and produced by NewBe in collaboration with Nickelodeon. Splendid Film will handle distribution in the Benelux region.

Life is more exciting, fun, and unpredictable with a pony, as seen in Nickelodeon’s new original animated series It’s Pony, premiering Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT)! The 20-episode series follows the comedic adventures of Annie and her best friend, who just so happens to be an enthusiastic, unpredictable, and carefree pony. Following its premiere, It’s Pony will continue to air regularly Fridays at 6:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on YTV.

It’s Pony made its world debut on Nickelodeon USA on Saturday, January 18, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT), and will air internationally from April 2020.

The series stars Jessica DiCicco (Adventure Time) as Annie, an optimistic and determined farm girl living in the city with her family and best friend Pony; Josh Zuckerman (Strange Angel) as Pony, who is naïve and impulsive, but loves Annie more than anything; Abe Benrubi (E.R.) as Dad, who treats Pony as a nuisance, but recognizes the special bond he shares with Annie; and India de Beaufort (All Hail King Julien) as Mom, who loves Annie and Pony’s relationship and always has a new project in the works.

Additional cast members bringing characters to life include: Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle) as Annie’s friend Fred; Bobby Moynihan (Saturday Night Live) as Annie’s friend Brian; Rosario Dawson (Rent) as Annie’s school principal Ms. Ramiro; Mark Feuerstein (Royal Pains) as the landlord Mr. Pancks; Megan Hilty (Smash) as the too-obsessed-with-Pony friend Beatrice; Yvette Nicole Brown (Drake & Josh, Victorious) as Mrs. Dunscomb; Grey Griffin (Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, The Loud House, El Tigre, Wow Wow Wubbzy, As Told by Ginger, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Mighty B!, Rugrats, The Simpsons) as Henrietta; John DiMaggio (Sanjay and Craig, The Loud House, Futurama, Adventure Time) as Dave the Sewer Worker and Tomatopalooza Judge; and Dee Bradley Baker (SpongeBob SquarePants, Legends of the Hidden Temple, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Gravity Falls, Star Wars: The Clone Wars) as Dog.

Throughout the season, the series will explore the everyday life and hijinks of two best friends whose optimism and enthusiasm turn any situation from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether making an epic quest down the street to mail a letter, heroically saving the local playground with a bake sale, or simply getting a haircut, Pony and Annie always stick together because life is better as a pair.

Created by Ant Blades, It’s Pony is inspired by a short from Nickelodeon’s 2015 International Animated Shorts Program.
