SpongeBob SquarePants Called a 'Violent' And 'Racist' Colonizer in University of Washington Professor's Academic Article

For fans of SpongeBob SquarePants, the beloved Nickelodeon animated series is just, as the theme song says, about a square yellow sponge living in a pineapple under the sea, his world one of "nautical nonsense" that has delighted fans of all ages for 20 years. Not everyone sees it in such a simple and innocuous light, however. For University of Washington professor Holly M. Barker, SpongeBob and the other characters inhabiting his world in Bikini Bottom such as Squidward Tentacles and Patrick Star aren't just harmless entertaining cartoon icons -- their "violent" and "racist" colonizers.

Yes, you read that right.

In an article entitled "Unsettling SpongeBob and the legacies of Violence on Bikini Bottom" published in "The Contemporary Pacific: A Journal of Island Affairs", Barker presents an argument that SpongeBob SquarePants as well as the other characters in the series are normalizing the taking of land while also contributing to the erasure of the indigenous people living there, specifically referring to the location of Bikini Bottom being a real, non-fiction place.

"SpongeBob SquarePants and his friends play a role in normalizing the settler colonial takings of indigenous lands while erasing the ancestral Bikinian people from their nonfiction homeland," Barker writes (via Fox News).

She goes on to note that the colonization of Bikini Bottom is "violent" and "racist". She also makes the claim that the series is a whitewashed version of the real-life activities carried out by the American military against native populations in the Pacific.

To understand Barker's argument, one has to understand a bit of American and world history as well as a popular fan theory about the Nickelodeon series. On SpongeBob SquarePants, the series is set in the undersea world known as Bikini Bottom. The location takes its name from the real-world Bikini Atoll -- something that SpongeBob voice actor Tom Kenny confirmed in 2015 in an interview with HuffPost where he noted that Bikini Bottom is "kind of named after Bikini Atoll". The real-world Bikini Atoll is a coral reef in the Marshall Islands that consists of 23 islands surrounding a central lagoon. Between 1946 and 1958, the United States military detonated 23 nuclear devices there both in the air and underwater. The inhabitants of Bikini Atoll were relocated in 1946 and some allowed to return in 1970 but it was soon discovered that the area remained highly radioactive and were removed again in 1980. The area remains mostly unhabitable to this day.

A popular fan theory about SpongeBob suggests that the world of Bikini Bottom is inhabited by creatures who were mutated by that nuclear testing. Specifically, a recent fan theory suggested that Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy were Navy divers accidentally caught in the Bikini Atoll tests -- specifically that the radiation had mutated and shrunk them. The general theory about Bikini Bottom inhabitants being mutated because of the nuclear testing has been largely debunked by Kenny, but Barker's issues with SpongeBob go a bit further. She also points out cultural appropriation of general Pacific culture, including the use of Hawaiian-style shirts, the pineapple houses, the use of tikis and the moai of Easter Island.

None of that is to say that Barker doesn't understand that SpongeBob SquarePants is just a innocent cartoon and that the writers and creators probably didn't think about the colonization aspect of things. Her concerns center around the lack of acknowledgement that "Bikini Bottom and Bikini Atoll were not for the taking" and that it leads children to "become acculturated to an ideology that includes the U.S. character SpongeBob residing on another people's homeland."

"We should be uncomfortable with a hamburger-loving American community's occupation of Bikini's lagoon and the ways that it erodes every aspect of sovereignty," Barker writes.

A rep for Nickelodeon did not immediately respond to Fox News' request for comment. Fox News' attempts to reach Tom Kenny -- who voices SpongeBob Squarepants -- have been unsuccessful.

Nickelodeon is set to premiere The Casagrandes, the network's highly-anticipated upcoming animated The Loud House spin-off which will follow Ronnie Anne and her chaotic multi-generational family in Great Lakes City, on Monday, October 14, 2019, and to celebrate, Nickelodeon will be hosting a special The Casagrandes panel at the 10th Anniversary Hispanicize!

Hispanicize, the largest event of its kind, connects Latinx trendsetters, social media entrepreneurs, technology leaders, celebrities. P.S. ARTS is excited to collaborate with the Afterschool Alliance and Nickelodeon in celebration of the 20th anniversary of Lights on Afterschool and SpongeBob Squarepants’ 20th year on-air. Together, we are working to shine a light on the richness that afterschool programs can add to students’ lives.

Strong afterschool programs create dynamic spaces for students that can improve the quality of their educational experience as a whole. Many students attend afterschool programs because they are in need of safe, structured environments after-school while their parents are still at work, others are searching for extra-curricular activities—whatever the reason, afterschool programs provide various avenues for engaged learning. The arts, in particular, serve as a powerful vehicle to navigate those avenues and support students in their development.

P.S. ARTS is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of children by providing arts education to underserved public schools and communities. The bulk of our instruction happens during regular school hours, but in recognition of the importance of after-school programs, we provide powerful Theater Arts instruction through our Extended Learning program. Our Inside Out Community Arts (IOCA) program aims to immerse youth in theatre, movement, arts, and media experiences while promoting social and emotional development.

Our collaboration with Lights on Afterschool and Nickelodeon merges our advocacy for after-school programs, creativity, and the arts by way of seven different SpongeBob-themed art projects grounded in a Creativity Learning Framework that advances visual art skills through innovation, imagination, and play. The learning framework provides background into each of the six most common creativity characteristics in fun, accessible activities designed for all ages. Mystery and adventure returns to Nickelodeon in the third season of the hit live-action series Hunter Street, premiering Monday 21st October 2019 on Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) and Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil)!

Hunter Street season three will air at 5:00pm on Nickelodeon Argentina, 7:00pm on Nickelodeon Colombia, 8:00pm on Nickelodeon México and Nickelodeon Venezuela, 9:00pm on Nickelodeon Chile, and at 7:00pm on Nickelodeon Brasil.

A lot has changed for the Hunter family in season three, and a mysterious treasure map brings them on a new and exciting adventure. The Hunter kids will once again need to work together, along with some new friends, to uncover the hidden treasure, outwit dangerous enemies, and discover major secrets about their family’s past along the way.

In the premiere episode, "The Birthday Gift", Anika is celebrating her 14th birthday when she is sent an unusual present – a miniature pyramid wrapped inside a torn treasure map. Before the kids can figure out what it means and who sent it, their parents announce they’ve booked a vacation to get away from renovations at the Hunter Museum. Once there, Sal discovers the gifts tied to a long-lost Aztec treasure – and an ancient curse. A new mystery has begun!

Hunter Street season three stars Kyra Smith as the outgoing leader Anika; Daan Creyghton as Sal, the genius of the bunch; Kate Bensdorp as the adventurous and youngest Hunter sibling Evie; Wilson Radjou-Pujalte as the talented artist Jake; Eliyha Altena as their quirky new friend Oliver; and Sarah Nauta as their brave new friend Jasmyn. Both Altena and Nauta also appeared in the Dutch counterpart of Hunter Street, De Ludwigs.

Hunter Street is produced by Blooming Media, and was co-developed with the Nickelodeon Netherlands series De Ludwigs.

Following a couple of weeks of speculation whether Nickelodeon USA would be moving Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles premieres to Nicktoons, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, the Director, Current Series and Development at Nickelodeon Animation has confirmed that Nickelodeon will be premiering the remaining episodes of Rise of the TMNT Saturday nights at 10:30 p.m. (ET/PT) from Saturday, October 12, 2019. Vasquez-Eberhardt also revealed that Nickelodeon will be debuting Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles season two later this year.

Season 1 episodes will premiere on Nicktoons starting Oct 12. Season 2 is coming later this year. Can't wait for you to see what's coming!!!

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a 2D-animated series which follows the band of brothers as they discover new powers and encounter a mystical world they never knew existed beneath the streets of New York City. The series premiered on Monday 17th September 2018. A second season was commissioned before the show premiered.

Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reimagines the characters in a fresh new way, featuring jagged-shelled Raphael as a snapping turtle, wielding twin tonfas as his weapons; Leonardo as a red-eared slider, using an ōdachi sword; Donatello as a soft-shell turtle, sporting a tech-bo staff; and Michelangelo as a box turtle, arming himself with a kusari-fundo. Along for the adventure is the Turtles’ most trusted ally, April O’Neil, a street savvy native New Yorker and Splinter, father figure and sensei to the Turtles.

The series stars the voice talent of Omar Miller (Ballers) as Raphael, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as Leonardo, Josh Brener (Silicon Valley) as Donatello, Brandon Mychal Smith (You’re The Worst) as Michelangelo, Kat Graham (The Vampire Diaries) as April O’Neil and Eric Bauza (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) as Splinter. WWE Superstar John Cena lends his voice as villain, Baron Draxum, an alchemist warrior mutant who seeks to turn all of humanity into mutants.

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., Oct. 04, 2019 -- As a result of the strong performance of Rainbow Rangers on Nick Jr. in the U.S., Genius Brands International “Genius Brands” (Nasdaq: GNUS) announced today that Nickelodeon, a Viacom Inc. company (Nasdaq: VIA, VIAB), has significantly increased the broadcasting of the Company’s original preschool series by tripling the daily broadcast.

Effective immediately, Nick Jr. will now go to airing Rainbow Rangers Monday – Friday, 3x per day, and on the weekends with a new episode premiering each Sunday. Since premiering on Nick Jr. in November 2018, the series has consistently achieved high ratings with its target demo of Girls 2 – 5-years-old.

“The increased broadcast run commitment in the premium 10 weeks leading up to Christmas underscores the success of the series. The exposure of Rainbow Rangers is now essentially tripled,” said Andy Heyward, Chairman & CEO, Genius Brands.

“As products are now rolling out into the marketplace, this huge increase in daily exposure will grow the awareness and appetite for the 375 SKUs of Rainbow Rangers’ licensed products beginning to be introduced now,” said Lloyd Mintz, SVP, Global Consumer Products, Genius Brands. “The licensed categories include toys, books, apparel, footwear, sleepwear, bedding, school supplies, party goods, costumes, novelty, vitamins, bathing suits, bicycles, among others.”

In the international market, Rainbow Rangers season one debuted this summer across Latin America on Nickelodeon LatAm, and in its first major European territory, Italy, on Cartoonito. Find Me in Paris is a live-action dance-themed tween drama centering on Lena Grisky, a Russian princess attending the Paris Opera Ballet School, the most elite dance institution in the world. But Lena has a secret. She’s a time traveler!

In Find Me in Paris season one, when Lena's boyfriend Henri gave her a magic necklace, it accidentally sent Lena spiralling through time, propelling her from 1905 into the 21st century! Lena soon found that the Paris Opera Ballet had changed a LOT since 1905, and she has to do everything she can to fit in so that nobody discovers her secret, juggling high school and rigorous ballet training. Lena has made lots of new friends in the future, and one enemy. She even becomes a member of an elite underground dance crew, the BLOK, all while trying to keep her secret.

Stuck in the past, Henri had a plan to get Lena back to 1905, but, as usual, he plan fell apart at every turn - and now, both Lena and Henri are stuck in the future. But newsflash - somebody did travel back to 1905, and you'll never guess who!: Thea!

So now, in Find Me in Paris season two, Lena and Henri are stuck in the future, and Thea is stuck in 1905, which brings a whole new level of complications.

To make things even crazier, the Time Collectors aren't the only ones chasing Lena and Henri: Now there's Lex, a super-charged agent from the Time Bureau, and she. means. business.

Lena and Henri are really going to have to step it up this year. I'm talking next level. Lena feels like she's got a second chance, and she's not going to waste it.

With a unique mix of ballet, contemporary dance, comedy and drama, Find Me in Paris (78×26’) is a high-end dramedy shot on location in some of the most iconic sites in Paris with a stellar international cast.

Kid Danger (Jace Norman) and Captain Man (Cooper Barnes) will face their biggest challenge ever in Nickelodeon’s hour-long episode, Henry Danger The Musical, premiering November 2019 on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland!

The special, which features 26 original Broadway-style songs, marks the return of the villainous Frankini (Frankie Grande) who puts a musical curse over the town of Swellview, while Kid Danger and Captain Man are forced to find a way to stop him.

In the special, Henry Hart awakens one morning to alarming news—that persistent pest Frankini has placed a musical curse over Swellview. The entire town quickly tires of being forced to sing a variety of musical numbers and to even dance like they are in a chorus line. When Captain Man and Kid Danger discover that they cannot punch and kick their way out of this problem, they are forced to bring in an unlikely ally to help them fight Frankini on his own turf--by taking him on in an epic, live-streamed sing battle to end the curse once and for all.

Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger is basic cable’s number-one show in the U.S. with K2-11 and K6-11 (through 6/23/19).
