BURBANK, Calif.–Sept. 4, 2019–A new home in the city holds big adventures, laughs and love around every corner in Nickelodeon’s new original animated series The Casagrandes, premiering Monday, Oct. 14, at 1:30 p.m. (ET/PT). A spinoff of Nick’s animated hit The Loud House, The Casagrandes tells the story of 11-year-old Ronnie Anne who moves to the city with her mom and older brother to live with their big, loving family, the Casagrandes. Following its premiere, the series moves to its regular timeslot on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT) beginning Saturday, Oct. 19, on Nickelodeon.

Starring Izabella Alvarez (Westworld) as 11-year-old Ronnie Annie, Carlos PenaVega (Big Time Rush) as her brother Bobby and Sumalee Montano (Nashville) as her mom Maria, the series showcases the culture, humor, and love that’s part of growing up in a multigenerational Mexican-American family. After moving in with their grandparents in Great Lakes City, Ronnie Anne adjusts to her new life living under one roof and over the family-run mercado (local market), which is a gathering place for everyone in the neighborhood.

Alvarez, PenaVega and Montano bring these characters to life, alongside: Carlos Alazraqui (The Fairly OddParents) as Carlos, “Tio;” Roxana Ortega (The League) as Frida, “Tia;” Alexa PenaVega (Spy Kids) as Carlota; Jared Kozak (Born this Way) as CJ; Alex Cazares (The Boss Baby: Back in Business) as Carl; Ruben Garfias (East Los High) as Hector, “Abuelo;” and Sonia Manzano (Sesame Street) as Rosa, “Abuela.” Additionally, Eugenio Derbez (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) gives voice to Dr. Santiago, a physician living and working in Peru, who is Ronnie Anne and Bobby’s father.

Ronnie Anne’s new apartment building holds new friends and neighbors, including: Ken Jeong (Dr. Ken) as Stanley Chang; Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch) as Becca Chang; Leah Mei Gold (Legion) as 12-year-old Sid Chang, Ronnie Anne’s new friend; and Lexi Sexton as Adelaide Chang, Sid’s 6-year-old little sister.

In the first episode, “Going Overboard,” Ronnie Anne finds out her Tio Carlos was a famous skateboarder and she begs him to teach her some new moves. Then, in “Walk Don’t Run,” Ronnie Anne and Sid start a dog-walking business to save up for a new skateboard in a plan that quickly gets out of hand.

The Casagrandes premiere will encore at 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. The Casagrande family was first introduced in the The Loud House special, “The Loudest Mission: Relative Chaos,” which premiered May 2017 and ranks as the highest-rated premiere for the series in Live+7 with both K2-11 (6.6/1.8M) and K6-11 (8.1/1.3M).

The Casagrandes is produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif. The series is executive produced by Michael Rubiner (The Loud House), with Karen Malach (The Loud House) serving as producer, Alan Foreman as supervising producer and Miguel Puga as supervising director. Award-winning cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz (Coco) serves as consulting producer and cultural consultant.

From TV KIDS:

TV KIDS: And you have The Casagrandes, a spin-off of The Loud House, coming up.

ROBBINS: I can’t take credit for that. It was happening before I got here. But I must say I’m super proud of the show. First of all, it’s the first animated show starring a multigenerational Mexican-American family. And it couldn’t be a better time to have that show. Besides that, it is hilarious. It’s so well written and the characters are so good. And I can’t wait to share it with the world. I think the show is terrific.

From The San Diego Union-Tribune:

Cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz’s journey from Lemon Grove to Hollywood to improve Latino representation

Lemon Grove native Lalo Alcaraz has long been an advocate for better representation of Latinos in America. Now, it’s his day job.

A shy, but artistically-inclined kid from Lemon Grove has become a bold artist whose influence can be felt far outside Southern California — not just across the U.S. but around the world.

Lalo Alcaraz got his start as an editorial cartoonist at San Diego State University’s student newspaper The Daily Aztec before going on to create the first nationally-syndicated, politically-themed Latino daily comic strip, “La Cucaracha.” More recently, he’s worked as a cultural consultant on the Pixar film “Coco” and the upcoming animated Nickelodeon show, “The Casagrandes.”

“It’s a job I wish didn’t exist, you know, because if we had adequate representation, if we had culturally competent people that really knew their stuff, you wouldn’t need to drop me in from outer space on a project,” Alcaraz said at a panel at the L’ATTITUDE conference in San Diego last month. “To Pixar’s credit, they were like, ‘We want this done right.’”

He recently met with The Conversation podcast at The San Diego Union-Tribune to talk about growing up in the San Diego region, what inspires his art, the challenges of publishing an editorial cartoon in the politically charged climate of 2019 and how he’s taken all he’s learned to Hollywood.

Here are some excerpts of the interview. Listen to the entire conversation here.

What was growing up in the San Diego region like for you?

“I grew up a kind of typical Mexican border kid. My mom came through Tijuana. She lived there for 10 years in the ‘50s from 1948 to 1958 and then was undocumented for a bit and then got her papers as a nanny in La Mesa. My dad came, I think, through Texas from Zacatecas, Mexico. My mom came from Mazatlán, Sinaloa and they met at Helix High School, the high school I went to, in an English as a Second Language (ESL) class, sometime early 1961 or 1962. Their desire to assimilate and fit in and learn English — it only took my mom 50 years to learn English — got them together and created me. And then I eventually graduated from that high school. I’d like to find that class where they met and put a plaque... they’d remove it the next day. I grew up in Lemon Grove after living in various cities and back and forth — Logan Heights and Tijuana for a tiny bit — but I grew up basically in Lemon Grove. It was like Mayberry, but SoCal style. It was a time of, kind of a lot of racism and police profiling. We’d get pulled over on our bicycles by the sheriffs. My parents were treated pretty poorly and it made me the bitter old cholo that I am today.”

Would you say growing up here influences your art?

“It is everything. That’s what kind of sharpened my sense of injustice.”

How much of yourself do you put into the characters in ‘La Cucaracha?’

“They’re definitely me. Half of me is angry all the time, wants to tell everyone how they’re wrong constantly, never has an incorrect opinion, and the other half of me just wants to chill and sit on the couch and drink a beer and watch endless hours of crap TV. Preferably science fiction crap. ... I’m usually more of the angry cucaracha.”

How would you say life for Latinos in America has changed or not changed since you’ve started illustrating it?

“Sometimes I’ll see a cartoon from 1994 and all you have to do is change the date on it because obviously we’re living in a super, hyper anti-immigrant time — not everyone, I mean, where some people think it’s ok to be that way — so, you know, I think society goes in cycles instead of progressing forward sometimes, I feel. So things have changed, they haven’t changed. The thing that has changed is, you know, society’s catching up to the things that I was saying 25 years ago, especially stuff about show biz and representation and it’s just becoming a thing. That’s why I’m fully employed. I’m fully overemployed these days in Hollywood so, you know, we’re getting more representation, but it’s still not enough.”

What can you tell us about the show you’re working on now?

“I am a consulting producer, cultural consultant and gadfly and freelance writer on this show called “The Casagrandes,” and it’s on Nickelodeon. It’s for ages 6 to11, and it’s the first animated show about a big Mexican-American family. It’s a spin-off from a show called “The Loud House,” which is one of the top shows there at Nickelodeon. The character, Ronnie Anne, is a little Mexican-American girl who was a super popular character on the loud house so they decided to spin that off, move her, her brother and her mom from Royal Woods, this Michigan suburb where “The Loud House” is set, to Great Lakes City, which is like a fake Chicago kind of amalgam of a bunch of cities — to go live with the mom’s family. They live in a big apartment building. The abuela, the grandma, is the building supervisor and they have a market, a mercado, on the ground floor. ... We’re making it as authentic as possible.”

Is it funny? Serious?

“It is very funny and it’s a good co-viewing show. I watched 10 years of Nickelodeon shows when my kids were little, so if you are that parent, you can watch this show because we sneak in a lot of funny adult things that kind of get by everybody but not the grown ups watching.”

“The Casagrandes” premieres on Nickelodeon on Oct. 14.

From Animation Magazine:

‘The Casagrandes’: A Giant Step for Latinx Representation

***This story originally appeared in the November ‘19 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 294)***

Michael Rubiner and Miguel Gonzalez

Bursting onto television screens this fall, The Casagrandes follows a large, loving family living together in the big city. A companion to the Emmy Award-winning The Loud House, the new 2D-animated series highlights the culture, humor and love of growing up in a multi-generational Mexican-American family, and is set to debut October 14 on Nickelodeon.

The Loud House, which debuted in May 2016 and is centered around 11-year-old Lincoln Loud and his 10 sisters, gives an inside look at what it takes to survive the chaos of a huge family. The Casagrandes moves the action to Great Lakes City, where Lincoln’s friend Ronnie Anne embarks on a new life which promises to be an adventure, especially now that she lives under one roof with her grandparents, aunt, uncle, cousins and a sass-talking parrot. The household is set up above the family-run mercado, which serves as a gathering place for the entire neighborhood.

The Casagrandes are no stranger to television, having made their debut in The Loud House special “The Loudest Mission: Relative Chaos” in Season 2. The family appeared throughout the third season of The Loud House and had a five-episode arc in Season 4, beginning with the premiere episode, “Friended!” Additional crossover episodes are also in the works for Season 5.

Both series are executive produced by Mike Rubiner (KaBlam!) and produced by Karen Malach (The Legend of Korra, Bunsen Is a Beast), with the animation completed in Canada by Jam Filled Entertainment. Award-winning cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz serves as a cultural consultant and consulting producer on The Casagrandes, and Alan Foreman (Welcome to the Wayne) is supervising producer.

Fresh, New Territory

Rubiner, who has worked on The Loud House since it began production in 2014 and helped develop The Casagrandes, was gratified to see the positive reaction the new characters received following their debut in “Relative Chaos.” “We really liked the characters a lot, and we just thought, ‘Well, maybe there’s a series here,’” he recounts. “The idea of featuring a Latinx family gave us a lot of new territory to explore,” he continues, noting that moving the characters from the rural setting of The Loud House into a big city, and adding a large, multi-generational family, reflected the lives of the Latinx community in a way that would be relatable.”

“It just gave us all these new places to go,” Rubiner continues. “What is it like living in the city? What is it like being part of a big, multi-generational family living in this building together? And what can we explore and portray about Mexican-American and Latinx culture? I think a lot of cultures in this country can relate to that kind of family situation. We wanted The Casagrandes to be relatable to kids, grounded in real stories about real families. But we also knew that we really wanted it to accurately reflect Mexican-American culture, so we really kept an eye on both of those things as we developed the show.”

Alcaraz, who is the creator of the first nationally syndicated, politically themed Latino daily comic strip, La Cucaracha, and has previously served as cultural consultant on projects like Pixar’s Oscar-winning animated feature Coco, says he’s been waiting for a show like The Casagrandes “since television was invented,” noting that — next to immigration — Mexican-American representation in Hollywood has always been a primary cause for him. “It’s hugely important because I remember growing up and not seeing any brown people on TV. But we’ve been inching forward,” he says.

“I did not think I was ever going to see this many shows that have Latino characters,” Alcaraz observes. “It’s just a handful, but that’s a huge shift from zero, you know? And then, when they’re done right, it’s just the world. I mean, look at Coco. We did that right, and people responded to it because everything was true, authentic, honest.”

The star of The Casagrandes is 11-year-old Ronnie Anne Santiago (voiced by Izabella Alvarez), who moves to Great Lakes City with her big brother, Bobby (Carlos PenaVega), and their mother, Maria Casagrande Santiago (Sumalee Montano), to live with their extended family. Bobby works at the family’s mercado, which he hopes to take over one day, and Maria is a hardworking nurse who treasures her time with her kids.

Other family members include Ronnie Anne and Bobby’s uncle, Carlos “Tio” Casagrande (Carlos Alazraqui); his wife, Frida “Tia” Casagrande (Roxana Ortega); and their four kids: confident, vintage-inspired eldest daughter, 17-year-old Carlota (Alexa PenaVega); sunshiny 13-year-old CJ (Jared Kozak), who has Down Syndrome; the precociously ambitious eight-year-old Carl (Alex Cazares); and playful, rambunctious, non-verbal one-year-old toddler, Carlito. At the head of the family is Carlos and Maria’s father, Hector “Abuelo” Casagrande (Ruben Garfias), who is a professor of cultural studies at a local college, and their mother, Rosa “Abuela” Casagrande (Sonia Manzano), a gifted cook who has a sixth sense about knowing when anyone in her house is hungry.

Rounding out the cast, Eugenio Derbez lends his voice as Ronnie Anne and Bobby’s father, Dr. Santiago, a physician who is living and working in Peru; Ken Jeong voices neighbor Stanley Chang, a friendly and patient train conductor; and Melissa Joan Hart voices Stanley’s wife Becca Chang, a quirky, smart and funny zoologist.

Cultural Inspirations

The Casagrandes shares the visual style of The Loud House, but with a vibrant color palette that puts Mexican heritage fully in the spotlight. Art director Miguel Gonzalez (The Loud House, Uncle Grandpa, Book of Life) describes the aesthetic of The Loud House as based on mid-century Sunday comics. “The Loud House uses a lot of browns and earth tones, but with our world we wanted to be a little bit more bold and vivid with the color scheme,” he explains, noting that he and his team of 12 artists took inspiration from things found in Mexican culture like the colorful papel picado garlands of cut paper, luchador masks and the vibrant sugar skulls of Día de los Muertos. “We just wanted to incorporate as much of that as possible into our world,” he says.

In addition to representing Mexican culture, it was also important for the production team to maintain a consistent visual style with The Loud House. “We knew Lincoln was going to appear in some of the episodes, so we couldn’t go too far from that world, because it would just look too weird to have him come into this world and be in a totally different style,” Gonzalez notes.

“It’s not every day that you get to draw characters that look like you,” Gonzalez, who is Mexican American, continues, “I don’t think people realize how important that is to kids, you know? Like, there’s someone that looks like you on TV and that’s cool. Not every culture can relate to that, but the little kids I talk to who are Mexican American, they just can’t wait to see the show, because the characters look like them.”

The Casagrandes premieres Monday, Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m. on Nickelodeon. The show moves to its regular timeslot on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. beginning Oct. 19.

Are You Afraid of the Dark's The Carnival of Doom Lands in Fortnite

Update (10/10) - Nickelodeon will be hosting a Carnival of Doom Chaos Fortnite Tournament TONIGHT (10/10) starting at 6 p.m. (ET/PT); 5 Central! The Are You Afraid of the Dark? Fortnite Tournament will stream on Twitch, and marks Nickelodeon's FIRST-EVER official Twitch stream!

Watch live video from Nickelodeon on www.twitch.tv

Update (10/1) - Submitted for approval of the Midnight Society - the Carnival of Doom is on Fortnite! ☠️🎡 The Map is available in creative mode at code 4763-4357-6721 if you dare to check it out ☠️

Could Are You Afraid of the Dark? be heading to Fortnite? BenDavid Grabinski, the writer and executive producer of Nickelodeon's upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? revival has teased on Twitter that the Carnival of Doom could be visiting the extremely popular video game soon!

Grabinski yesterday shared a cryptic image on Twitter of what appears to be the opening to the new carnival in the limited series, with the hashtag "#AreYouAfraidOfTheDark", but something about the image is a bit... off. You can check it out below:

It's not exactly an incredibly detailed image, but it certainly looks like there's some clear Fortnite signs in there. For example, the trees look straight out of the game, and the sky has what appears to be a couple different cracks in it. Given how soon the limited series is set to premiere, if it's really some sort of event and not just a clever Creative creation or fan construction, it's likely to come to light sooner rather than later.

The extremely popular video game Fortnite is no stranger to collaborations and crossovers with other pop culture properties. Just in the last several months, the game has had Batman, IT, and Borderlands events, just to name a few. So the fact that there now appears to be some sort of tease for a collaboration between Fortnite and the new Are You Afraid of the Dark? is not terribly shocking.

What do you think? Is this a legit tease, or just something cooked up to look like one? Let me know in the comments!

Nickelodeon is preparing for the return of The Midnight Society with the all-new Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-part limited series event. Based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic, and reimagined for a new generation, part one of Are You Afraid of the Dark? will debut on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), with parts two and three to follow Oct. 18, and Oct. 25, respectively.

Across the three hour-long episodes, Are You Afraid of the Dark? will follow members of an entirely new Midnight Society, who tell a terrifying tale of the Carnival of Doom and its evil ringmaster Mr. Tophat, only to witness the shocking story come frightfully to life. In the just-released trailer, viewers meet the new members of the Midnight Society, get a glimpse at the uncertainty that awaits and prepare for an adventure beyond their wildest nightmares.

The new members of the Midnight Society are: Rachel, played by Lyliana Wray (Top Gun: Maverick); Gavin, played by Sam Ashe Arnold (Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.); Akiko, played by Miya Cech (Rim of the World, Always Be My Maybe); Graham, played by Jeremy Taylor (IT: Chapter Two, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween); and Louise, played by Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl, The Worst Witch). The Carnival of Doom’s ringmaster, Mr. Tophat, is played by Rafael Casal (Blindspotting).

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is produced by ACE Entertainment (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, The Perfect Date) with ACE founder Matt Kaplan and Spencer Berman serving as executive producers. The series is written by BenDavid Grabinski (Skiptrace, Happily) and directed by Dean Israelite (Power Rangers movie, Project Almanac), both of whom are also executive producers. Chris Foss is also an executive producer.

One of the Nickelodeon’s most iconic series from the ‘90s, the original Are You Afraid of the Dark? delivered riveting stories of horror to young audiences, all from a kid’s perspective, which was relatively uncommon at the time. Are You Afraid of the Dark? is owned by DHX and was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, who are also executive producers on the project.

Fortnite is currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and most mobile devices.

Az animációs sorozat gyártója a Spin Master. A Mancs őrjárat Live! „A Mentőfutam” című kalandos, zenés meseelőadás először látogat hazánkba, hogy megmutassa, „nincs túl nagy falat vagy túl kicsi kutya”. A minden korosztály számára tanulságos előadás az összetartásról, a szociális érzékenységről, a problémamegoldásról szól, amiben a szereplők csapatjátékosként vetik be a képességeiket.

– mondta Monika Wysocka, a Viacom kelet-közép-európai Location Based Experiences alelnöke.

A különleges színpadi produkció minden pillanata izgalmas kalandot ígér, a közönség együtt szurkol a hősies kutyusoknak, hogy sikerrel járjanak” – tette hozzá Thomas Kingsley, a Nickelodeon Global Location Based Experiences igazgatója.

Az előadásban hallható pergő ritmusú zene és a vadonatúj, izgalmas forgatókönyv maradandó színházi élményt nyújt a gyerekeknek. A hagyományos színházi díszletek mellett az óriás LED-videófal teljes átélést biztosít a nézők számára, ugyanis a Mancs őrjárat eredeti környezetét varázsolja a nézők elé.

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants. Except right now, he’s away from Bikini Bottom on tour with “The SpongeBob Musical,” the Tony-nominated adaptation of Nickelodeon’s beloved animated series. After a Broadway run, the zany production will play the Boch Center Wang Theatre from Oct. 15 to Oct. 27 as part of its North American tour.

Most people know SpongeBob from his animated misadventures, packaged into two 11-minute segments per episode. Often, the burger-flipping sponge finds himself in simple situations that escalate to the absurd. For instance: An episode from 2002 finds SpongeBob and his best friend, starfish Patrick Star, going door-to-door selling candy bars. SpongeBob tries to pick a tantalizing loose thread off the shirt of his snobby co-worker and neighbor, Squidward. Things unravel from there.

Instead of ramping things up one step at a time, “The SpongeBob Musical” begins with an explosive revelation. Residents of Bikini Bottom learn that a nearby volcano, Mount Humongous, is set to destroy the entire town in 24 hours. As Squidward (Christopher Cody Cooley), Patrick (Beau Bradshaw), Sandy the squirrel (Daria Pilar Redus), money-grubbing Mr. Krabs (Zach Kononov), and his rival Plankton (Tristan McIntyre) reckon with impending doom, it’s up to one optimistic sponge to save the ecosystem he calls home.

Translating 11-minute-long, action-packed episodes into more than two hours of musical theater proved challenging, director Tina Landau said in a phone interview. The New York City theater artist started developing the show in 2007 and has been working with it ever since.

“The show was not conceived as a musical,” Landau said. “It’s more like a performance art event, and a party, and a carnival, and a rock concert.” A star-studded lineup of musicians contributed to the show’s soundtrack, which includes songs by David Bowie and Brian Eno, Panic! at the Disco, They Might Be Giants, Sara Bareilles, and John Legend, to name a few.

Characters wear clothing that suggests their animated counterparts’ but doesn’t try to replicate it. Squidward wears pants with extra-green legs. SpongeBob wears his iconic suspenders. “But the intention was never to put him in a large, square, foam kind of theme-park costume,” Landau said.

In the animated series, SpongeBob plays his nose like a flute and contorts his malleable body into improbable shapes. In the musical, SpongeBob’s human actor jumps around excitedly and pulls his pet snail Gary behind him on wheels. “We have not shied away from the fact that SpongeBob stretches and contorts,” Landau said. “We have just found really theatrical ways to express that.”

SpongeBob’s first episode ran in 1999, inspiring legions of millennial superfans who grew up watching the show. SpongeBob memes continue to circulate on social media. Fans even petitioned to get the iconic SpongeBob rock song “Sweet Victory” (from the 2001 episode “Band Geeks”) performed at the 2019 Super Bowl. They wanted to honor show creator Stephen Hillenburg, who died last fall.

This production taps into that deep vein of SpongeBob fandom. “We have found that our biggest group of fans are definitely in their 20s and 30s,” Landau said.

Like so many of his peers, Lorenzo Pugliese grew up watching SpongeBob’s antics. The actor, who plays SpongeBob in the touring production, graduated from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia this spring.

“Actually, I don’t even know if I told Tina this,” Pugliese said over the phone, laughing. “But when I was a kid, in the morning, I would wake up, open up the windows and yell, ‘Good morning world, and all who inhabit it!’ ” It’s a quote from a classic SpongeBob scene. And now, Pugliese gets to yell it at the top of every performance.

Bonus: Boston theatergoers can celebrate SpongeBob with an extra treat. J.P. Licks, the ice cream chain founded in Jamaica Plain, will offer a sea salted pineapple ice cream flavor for a limited time as a joint promotional effort. Sounds like it would pair nicely with a Krabby Patty.

From Beloit Daily News:

OVERTURE CENTER WELCOMES 'SPONGEBOB'

MADISON - He may live in a pineapple under the sea, but SpongeBob will soon be visiting a Stateline Area stage.

The beloved children's cartoon character is being brought to life in "The SpongeBob Musical" Oct. 8-13 at the Overture Center.

"The show has all the things that we know and love from the cartoon, but it has a much more realistic storyline," said actor Cody Cooley.

Cooley, a native of Sykesville, Maryland, is portraying the disgruntled Squidward Q. Tentacles in the brand new traveling Broadway production.

"Squidward is the everyman, just going about his day job and trying to get through it," Cooley said. "He really just wants to be at home playing his clarinet."

Although SpongeBob Squarepants has had many memorable episodes from its years on Nickelodeon, those who attend the show will see something completely new.

The storyline, not based on any previous plots, is that beautiful Bikini Bottom is about to be destroyed by a natural disaster. All the characters must come together to save the day.

"All the characters in the show look at the problem in their own unique way, and the story is all about how a community can be brought together and work together," Cooley said.

Viewers can expect to see the story played out with a fun and colorful set, Broadway numbers and lots of dancing, including a 7-to-8 minute tap routine by Cooley.

There won't be any foam-costumed actors on stage, Cooley added. The show's directors have worked very hard to embrace the human connection the story makes.

"When I saw this show on Broadway, I thought it was so refreshing that you expected it to be like what you'd see in a theme park, but it's not at all," Cooley said.

Families are sure to enjoy the show's production quality, songs, and seeing a brand new cast that is excited to perform for a live audience. Madison will be the third stop on the tour.

"This show has such great heart and such a good message," Cooley said. "The kids will really love seeing SpongeBob on stage and the adults will love the humor...it's all really fun."

Tickets for "The SpongeBob Musical" start at $31 and go up to $141. Shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 8-10; 8 p.m. Oct. 11; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Oct. 12; 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Oct. 13.

A special "Meet the Artist" event will happen after the show on Thursday, Oct. 10, where a brief Q&A session will take place. There also will be a "Best Day Ever" event at noon on Sunday, Oct. 13, featuring art projects and more.

The show is rated as appropriate for children ages 5 and up. For additional information and to purchase tickets, visit www.overture.org or follow the Overture Center on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube or Instagram.

From Mass Live:

Broadway’s ‘SpongeBob Musical’ coming to Hartford, Boston

When Stephen C. Kallas was growing up in Monroe, Conn., he enjoyed sitting on the couch watching the animated series “SpongeBob SquarePants” on Nickelodeon.

Soon he’ll be on the stage at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts in Hartford performing as Old Man Jenkins in the “The SpongeBob Musical,” which runs Oct. 1-6. The musical will later travel to Boston for an Oct. 15-27 run at the Boch Center-Wang Theater.

It’s the 20th anniversary of SpongeBob, an incurable optimist and earnest sea sponge, so it’s especially “cool to jump into the (stage) show when there is such a big anniversary for the brand,” said Kallas, 24, speaking from Schenectady, New York, before the production began a national tour there.

Kallas enjoyed SpongeBob as a child because “it was so whacky and so out there,” but he could connect with the characters.

“SpongeBob SquarePants” launched in 1999. The series chronicles the adventures and endeavors of the title character and his friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. It has been the top children’s animated series on television for the last 17 years, generating a universe of beloved characters, pop-culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical and a global fan base.

Created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, California, the character-driven cartoon chronicles the nautical and sometimes nonsensical adventures of the eponymous yellow sponge, shaped like a kitchen sponge.

Moving from cartoon viewer to stage actor in the SpongeBob world is “just as amazing as I thought it would be,” said Kallas, who graduated in 2017 from Wagner College in Staten Island, New York, with a bachelor’s degree in theater with concentrations in performance and design tech management.

He began acting in fifth grade when a friend asked him to get involved with the production of The Music Man. “I said, ‘Sure, why not?’ and was bit by the theater bug,” he said.

He acted during college and after graduation landed roles in regional productions like The Wizard of Oz and Newsies throughout the country.

Kallas is excited to return to Connecticut to act at The Bushnell for the first time; he saw many shows there while growing up in the Constitution State.

He praised the comedy and the music in SpongeBob, saying fans will understand the “Easter eggs” (references to the original cartoon) while newcomers will enjoy it too.

The SpongeBob Musical features an original pop and rock-infused score by a roster of Grammy Award-winning songwriters. Led and conceived by director Tina Landau, a 2018 Tony Award nominee, and a Tony-winning design team, the production brings the spirit of SpongeBob to life with humanity, heart and theatricality.

The musical has original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants, T.I., Domani and Lil’C and songs by David Bowie and Brian Eno and by Tom Kenny and Andy Paley.

“SpongeBob SquarePants” was adapted as a stage musical in 2016 by Landau. SpongeBob SquarePants, The Broadway Musical premiered in Chicago in 2016 and opened on Broadway at the Palace Theatre on in 2017. The musical opened to critical acclaim and tied for most-nominated production at the 2018 72nd Tony Awards with 12 Tony nominations.

Kallas said the production is for audiences of all ages. “It’s definitely an uplifting show” about community, inclusion and “being a positive person and what it means to be a good neighbor.”

“Everybody could use a little positivity in their life,” he added.

From The Boston Globe:

The VIP Lounge with Morgan Blanchard

Blanchard, from Portsmouth, N.H., plays Patchy the Pirate in “The SpongeBob Musical,” coming to the Boch Center Wang Theatre Oct. 15-Oct. 27.

While Morgan Blanchard was growing up in Portsmouth, N.H., he and his family would drive to Boston to attend theater productions in Boston. “The first musical I ever saw was at the Wang. It was ‘Cats,’ ” recalled Blanchard (who plays Patchy the Pirate in “The SpongeBob Musical,” coming to the Boch Center Wang Theatre Oct. 15-27) in a recent phone interview. “It was so magical to be this young kid seeing these shows, and now I get to be the person I was looking up to at that time. It’s nice to hopefully be [performing at] someone’s first musical -- and I’m assuming with ‘SpongeBob’ that there will be a lot of new audiences.” Blanchard was quick to point out that the Tony-nominated show, based on the beloved animated series on Nickelodeon, is not just for kids. “The show has an incredibly relevant and important message that I think a lot of people need to hear -- especially now -- about community and coming together and celebrating each other and all of our differences,” he said. In addition to seeing family and friends when the national tour lands in Boston, Blanchard said he is most excited about “sleeping in my own bed” at his parents’ home in Portsmouth. “I live out of a suitcase, so it will be nice to be home,” said Blanchard, who graduated from Ithaca College last year and immediately joined the national tour of “The Sound of Music” before joining the cast of “The SpongeBob Musical.“ We caught up with the 23-year-old actor to talk about all things travel.

Favorite vacation destination?

London – no question. While in college, I studied abroad in London for four months and it was a pivotal moment for my personal growth. The city’s history, parks, and commitment to the arts offer a myriad of activities to explore.

Favorite food or drink while vacationing?

Wine. Always wine. And of course any sort of delicacy from the place I’m visiting. I love trying new things.

Where would you like to travel to but haven’t?

Italy. It’s where my family is from, and who doesn’t love Italian food?

One item you can’t leave home without when traveling?

A journal. I always make sure to travel with a journal so I can keep track of my entire trip and look back on the memories.

Aisle or window?

Window – so I can look out and see my destination from above.

Favorite childhood travel memory?

My mother works for a travel agency so we would travel constantly as a kid. But my favorite memory has to be my trip to Japan with a student ambassador group when I was in middle school. It was a complete culture shock . . . and such a beautiful country.

Guilty pleasure when traveling?

Farmers’ markets. I always make sure to find the local farmers’ markets in each destination. Local markets can tell you so much about a city and those who inhabit it. And the food is cheap.

Best travel tip?

Try traveling alone. You’ll get to do exactly what you want and hopefully make some friends along the way. And always strike up conversations with strangers.

From MOOSE GAZETTE:

‘SpongeBob’ made a splash on Broadway. Now, he’s headed to Boston.

SpongeBob SquarePants may live in a pineapple under the sea, but for the next few months, he’s taking it on the road. A little more than a year after its Broadway run, “The SpongeBob Musical” is on a 45-city national tour. Its fourth stop? Boston’s Wang Theatre, where the splashy celebration will take the stage from Oct. 15 to 27.

The musical adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon series follows your favorite absorbent, yellow, and porous sea dwelling played by Lorenzo Pugliese, as well as Patrick (Beau Bradshaw), Sandy Cheeks (Daria Pilar Redus), Squidward (Cody Cooley), and the rest of Bikini Bottom’s usual suspects. In this episode, the town grapples with news that volcano “Mount Humongous” may erupt and destroy their beloved underwater city.

“SpongeBob” originally premiered in Chicago in June 2016 prior to its Broadway debut in December 2017. It quickly earned critical success, snagging 12 Tony nominations to tie with “Mean Girls” for the most nods that year, and won Best Musical at both the 2018 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

The show is conceived by Tina Landau, who has served as director for all of its iterations. The musical also features a book by Kyle Jarrow, choreography by Christopher Gatteli, orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt, and music by a slew of Grammy Award-winning artists including John Legend, Lady Antebellum, T.I., and Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Boston-born band Aerosmith.

While the show is an adaptation of the animated hit, it is not a replica. Instead of theme park-style getups, the actors wear clothing reminiscent of their characters — SpongeBob dons a yellow shirt and red tie, Mr. Krabs has red boxing gloves as hands, and Sandy’s costume is accessorized by her signature pink flower. And while the TV series was created for the younger set, that’s not the case for its musical counterpart.

“[Landau] said on Broadway they would say, ”SpongeBob the Broadway Musical’ — it’s so good, you can even bring your kid.’ It’s made for everyone,” cast member Morgan Blanchard told Boston.com over the phone. “It confronts a lot of ideas that we are struggling with right now in terms of community and coming together and the obsession over fear, and how we use fear to either dominate or divide and how destructive that can be, which I think is arguably more relevant to adults than it is to children.”

Blanchard plays Patchy the Pirate, the show’s sole human character and one he describes as a “whack-a-doodle superfan of SpongeBob.” You may remember the character from the animated series’s occasional live-action segments. For Blanchard, a Portsmouth, N.H. native, the Boston leg of the tour holds personal significance. Growing up, he would come into the city around six or seven times a year to see theatrical productions. And although he spent last year on the national tour of “The Sound of Music,” this month will mark his first time taking the Boston stage.

“I’ve been waiting to come to the Wang [Theatre], he said. “It’s just a childhood dream to do that.”

The SpongeBob Musical; Tuesday, Oct. 15 – Sunday, Oct. 27 at various times; Wang Theatre, Boston; $25 – $125; all ages

From Easton Journal:

Bikini Bottom comes to Boston with ‘The SpongeBob Musical’

Starring as SpongeBob in the North American tour is Scranton, Pennsylvania, native Lorenzo Pugliese, a 2019 graduate of the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. By telephone recently from Hartford, Connecticut, Pugliese talked about what it’s like to be making his road show debut and more.

Of all the leading male characters in Broadway musicals, there’s only one based on a rectangular kitchen sponge – the always absorbing SpongeBob.

The title character in Nickelodeon’s long-running animated television comedy series “SpongeBob SquarePants” stepped onto the stage in June 2016, when “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical” premiered in Chicago before opening on Broadway at the Palace Theatre in December 2017.

Conceived and directed by Tina Landau, with book by Kyle Jarrow, choreography by Tony Award winner Christopher Gattelli, and orchestrations and arrangements by Tony and Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt, the Broadway production earned 12 Tony Award nominations in 2018.

It won for Best Scenic Design in a Musical for David Zinn’s recreation of the underwater world of SpongeBob and his friends in Bikini Bottom.

With a refashioned title, “The SpongeBob Musical” is now on a tour coming to Boston’s Boch Center Wang Theatre on Oct. 15, with a score that includes songs by Yolanda Adams, David Bowie, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry, Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, The Flaming Lips, Lady Antebellum, and others.

Q: Before you landed this role, what would you have thought if someone had told you that you’d be playing a sponge on your first tour in a musical?

A: Someone actually did tell me that. It was my sophomore year in college, and a friend who’d seen “SpongeBob” in New York, told me that I’d be perfect for the role. It sounded kind of crazy at first, because I didn’t know anything about the musical. Not too long after, though, my girlfriend, Julia Toitch, took me to see the Broadway show as “character research.” Then I understood what the person meant.

Q: What is it like bringing an iconic animated character like SpongeBob to life on stage?

A: It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s incredibly high energy, but with every moment super calculated. The cool thing, though, is that there’s so much truth and humanity in these characters. Tina Landau directs us to do human portrayals of these characters, rather that caricatures.

One of my favorite things about SpongeBob is that he actively wants to become manager at the Krusty Krab restaurant. He is working toward a goal, which I respect.

Q: Are you fan of the “SpongeBob SquarePants” series?

A: I loved it as a kid. There’s a line that SpongeBob says every day, “Good morning, world, and all who inhabit it.” I used to wake up every morning and scream it out my bedroom window. Now it’s my very first line in the musical.

Q: Who’s your favorite character and why?

A: SpongeBob is definitely my favorite character – always has been, always will be. He’s wacky and outlandish which makes him not only very appealing to the audience, but also great fun for me to play as a performer.

Q: Some amazing songwriters have contributed to this score. What’s it like to get to do their music?

A: Having the music of all these different artists in one score means we can do everything from country and pop to rock. The song by Bowie and Brian Eno, “No Control,” in act one is very panicky and works just perfectly with the story. And that’s just one of the great numbers in this show.

Q: What’s your favorite musical number from the show?

A: My favorite is Squidward’s big number “I’m Not a Loser” by They Might Be Giants. It’s a flawless, perfectly crafted, Golden Age of Broadway number that’s marvelously performed by our Squidward, Cody Cooley, and company. I’m offstage, but I watch it from the wings every night. I love it!

From Metro US:

New England native sets sail in ‘The Spongebob Musical’

Morgan Blanchard on bringing the show’s first national tour to Boston.

Are you ready kids, because “The Spongebob Musical” ships up to Boston this month as part of the show’s first national tour.

Set to take over the Wang Theatre Oct. 15-27, the hit production based on the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon earned 12 Tony nominations and one win during its initial run on Broadway. After kicking off the national tour in Schenectady last month, Spongebob, Patrick, Squidward and the rest of the Bikini Bottom gang are finally heading to the Hub, and they’re setting sail with a special cast member who knows how to navigate Boston’s dirty water.

New England native Morgan Blanchard takes on the role of Patchy the Pirate in “The Spongebob Musical,” and he is thrilled to bring the show to his old stomping grounds. In fact, the Wang Theatre was where Blanchard saw his first touring show, “The Phantom of the Opera,” as a kid while growing up in Rye, N.H., just outside of Portsmouth.

“I could not be more excited,” Blanchard tells Metro. “Just to perform at the Wang is the craziest thing in the world. It’s where I grew up seeing all the tours coming through.”

Ever since his first school play in kindergarten, Blanchard has been enamored with theater and the arts. He scored his first role with a professional show in fifth grade as part of a production of “The Sound of Music” at Prescott Park, and hasn’t slowed down since.

“I kind of did theater non-stop from that moment on,” says Blanchard, who has a BFA in Musical Theatre from Ithaca College.

With a slew of regional and national credits under his belt, Blanchard knew early on in high school that he wanted to make a career out of his creative outlets.

“Probably my freshman year of high school is when I knew that this is what I wanted to do,” says Blanchard. “Fortunately I had parents who were so supportive and ready to back me in that regardless of whether it’s stable or not.”

Having been a fan of the franchise since childhood, Blanchard admits that playing Patchy the Pirate in “The Spongebob Musical” is a massive opportunity, and he’s determined to give it his all since so many fans across the globe love the swashbuckling character from the cartoon.

“It’s pretty huge,” says Blanchard. “It’s the biggest opportunity I’ve come across yet and I’m so grateful.”

“It’s such a blast to bring to life these cartoon characters that you think are so surface level,” he adds, “but they’re actually very detailed and can tell a really relevant and truthful story.”

As for why Spongebob and his pals have had such a big impact on culture over the decades, Blanchard notes that part of it is due to the show’s focus on community.

“The whole concept of Bikini Bottom,” says Blanchard. “This idea of community is very relatable. That’s what keeps people coming back to it.”

There’s also the show’s unique brand of humor, which Blanchard believes has influenced an entire generation of fans.

“The humor really has morphed our generation,” says Blanchard. “The way our generation finds things funny is incredibly shaped by Spongebob and other Nickelodeon cartoons.”

Edward Venero Readies 'VNRO x SB' SpongeBob Fashion Collection

Nickelodeon is teaming up with Peruvian fashion designer Edward Venero to launch a brand-new fashion collection inspired by the network's hit original animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants!

Launching on Wednesday 9th October 2019 via the designer's VNRO label, the line, titled VNRO x SB (VNROxSB), will feature 43 items inspired by the iconic series for men, women and children of all ages. The line took two years to create.

Venero, who is currently in remission from cancer, revealed that he was excited to create the project as he had already seen the (SPONGEBOB)RED collection Jeremy Scott designed for Moschino.

"One day Nickelodeon's licensees in Lima called me, about two years ago, and that's how it all began. In the world several collections were being made with SpongeBob for a concept called SpongeBob Gold, which was a premium product line, and that is what they wanted to replicate here," Venero said.

"In my shop [in Jockey Plaza] you can find pieces from size 2 to XL. I was clear from the beginning that all the garments and collections that I developed for that property would be for everyone, regardless of gender or age."

“It has been an interesting and demanding job. SpongeBob is going to “sponge” iconic characters,” anticipates Venero, whose creations have always been rewarded for humor.

Venero will showcase the VNRO x SB collection during an aquatic themed event at Country Club Lima Hotel, San Isidro during LIF Week 2019.

From El Comercio:

Me costó diez años.

Hace cuatro no había H&M.

From Publimetro Perú:

Nickelodeon is preparing for the return of The Midnight Society with the all-new Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-part limited series event based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic, reimagined for a new generation this October, and to celebrate, Mashable had the chance to go behind-the-scenes at the filming of the new trilogy! Check out what they discovered below!:

Fresh horrors from a classic: Behind-the-scenes of the new ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark'

Submitted for approval of the Midnight Society: Our story begins in a darkened Vancouver warehouse. Fog pours in, illuminated by eerie blue shafts of light escaping from the basement below. A ring master's stage lies at the end of the vast expanse, embroiled in flames. A girl runs past, dressed all in white, terror in her eyes.

This is what it's like behind the scenes of the Are You Afraid of the Dark reboot.

For those who grew up on the original '90s run of Are You Afraid of the Dark, some of those stories remain still seared into our brains decades later: Skeletons jumping out of pools, getting trapped in a mirror, losing your ability to speak in a haunted library, a grinning monster that distorts your face forever.

Or just the sound of wind chimes in the opening credits, as the light from a flickering match goes out.

From what we saw on our set visit for the upcoming limited series premiering Oct. 11 on Nickelodeon, the reboot continues the original's beloved legacy with fresh horrors that new and older generations won't be forgetting any time soon.

"I wanted to capture exactly how terrifying it felt to watch it as a kid," said showrunner BenDavid Grabinski who was a huge fan himself growing up. "When you look back, it's the isolated moments, those images that are the most long-lasting."

Some of it is enough to make you ask, wait, is this still a kids show? But the reality is, in 2019, the threshold is higher, with access to hardcore adult horror just a button click away for anyone.

Some of it is enough to make you ask, wait, is this still a kids show?

"The general rule was not to put in anything that'd keep a kid up for weeks," said Grabinski, before adding mischievously, "But maybe it takes a little longer to sleep the first night."

Despite raising the bar to meet modern standards though, Are You Afraid of the Dark still serves as that "gateway drug" into the genre, giving kids a taste for more mature horror down the line.

It's exactly what happened for nearly every adult crew and cast member on set, who all grew up to go into the business of making horror.

Both the reboot and original were shot in Canada. So much of the Canadian crew feels like it's a literal return to the neck of the woods that spooked them as kids — like a scene we saw shot at a schoolyard with real kids playing in the background, right across from a cemetery.

It not all nostalgic reverence, though. The reboot doesn't retread the original's stories or characters.

"When you think of Are You Afraid of the Dark, what comes to mind is the Midnight Society, kids around a campfire telling stories. But after that, the beauty of the show is it's a blank slate," Grabinski said.

There's no explicit connection to the original group of kids, though Grabinski likes the idea of many Midnight Societies having existed forever all across the country, each operating independently.

The reboot's three-episode arc follows one in the small town of Argento, Oregon (horror aficionados will find many other easter egg references like that). When Rachel, a shy new girl played by Lyliana Wray, arrives at Herbert West Middle School, a member of the secret society sees her drawing nightmarish doodles and invites her to audition.

The reboot is, "much darker, much more dangerous."

Rachel tells the story of the Carnival of Doom. The next day, it comes to town, seemingly sprung into reality from her imagination, bringing with it a barrage of other metaphysical horrors.

But, Grabinski insisted, this isn't a straightforward stories-come-to-life situation like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark or Goosebumps. A bigger twist is afoot. "Then the mystery becomes, well, then how is it happening? How is this real? Needless to say, you’ll find out."

At the center of the nightmarish carnival is Mr. Tophat, a villain described by Grabinski as "an evil Master of Ceremonies with a great costume and a little bit evil Willy Wonka."

The reboot is, "much darker, much more dangerous. It's right out of any great horror movie," agreed Rafael Casal, the talented multi-hyphenate writer-director-actor from Blindspotting that's now bringing Mr. Tophat to life.

As we talked on the warehouse set of a nightmare sequence, he excitedly ran his hands along the elaborate sequins of his flashy costume, remembering how the original show shook him to his core.

"You needed to stay up late for Nick at Night, the house would be dark, and that opening title sequence with the music," he grabbed his chest as if reliving it right then. "It reminded you of the collective horror from every past episode."

Into the woods we go ... | Image: Nickelodeon

What made Are You Afraid of the Dark so effective wasn't jump scares, Casal said. It was bringing a Twilight Zone-like psychological horror to the everyday fears kids deal with at school and throughout this frighteningly transitional time in their lives.

Having identified with the horror as a kid, he's now itching to play the opposition, an embodiment of the fears the kids face — and ultimately conquer.

Both he and Grabinski joked they'd know they did their jobs right if, for the rest of his life, Casal walks down the street inspiring looks of gleeful terror from young people. He's still thinking of which line he'll whisper back at them to creep them out.

"It reminded you of the collective horror from every past episode."

What makes a great villain, Casal said, is "someone who's wildly unpredictable. You can't understand the origin of their behavior, why they are the way they are. And add a third layer of creepiness: being nice."

Mr. Tophat, who seems to share a twisted longstanding mental connection with Rachel, is as charismatic as he is unsettling. "It makes you ask, what happens when this niceness goes away? What's beneath it?" said Casal. "And the longer he's nice to you, the less you trust it."

It almost sounds like a metaphor for trying to figure out the often baffling rules and mysteries of the adult world as a kid. At that age, adults can seem alarmingly unpredictable, nice one minute, then punishing the next — and you don't even know what you did to cause that shift.

Aside from a perfectly cast and magnetic villain, the developing friendships in the Midnight Society members are as central to the new show as the horror.

Grabinski even required his young cast to watch classics like The Goonies and Monster Squad together, hoping to foster a similarly natural camaraderie on set that'd translate to the screen. Judging from how the five young actors were practically glued at the hip even during breaks, it seems to have worked.

The young cast is just a great hang. | Image: Nickelodeon

"A big part of every project, especially with kids, is getting to know each other and building your chemistry before," said Jeremy Ray Taylor, who plays the nerdy germaphobe Graham. He knows this from experience, having been part of the losers club from It. "The movie nights bring us closer together, so you start learning how to make it a normal conversation in front of the camera too instead of just acting."

Making the kids feel real and relatable seemed essential to modernizing Are You Afraid of the Dark for 2019. Grabinski asked himself what kind of wonderfully weird teens would actually sneak off to tell scary stories around a campfire at midnight? So naturally, they all had to be horror-lovers themselves, like the sassy amateur zombie movie director Akiko (played by Miya Cech).

"I think kids want to see more realistic acting in shows today," said Sam Ashe Arnold, who's the group's jock, Gavin. "We're updating it by going for something more grounded than the original."

"What always stays the same no matter what is fear of the unknown."

Aside from cast bonding, they also did rehearsals where ad-libbing and improvisation was encouraged. They wanted the kids to sound like kids, rather than like adults writing kids.

"What goes on in the series is basically what we're like in real life," said Tamara Smart, who plays the popular cheerleader named Louise. "In some scenes they'll be like, 'Say whatever you want, make it weird, make it awkward.'"

Despite some updates for a 2019 audience, the limited series closely follows the original's mood and atmosphere. There was initially talk of doing a movie instead (still a possibility down the line).

But the network TV episodic format just felt right. Not only because it leaves you with cliffhangers each week, but like the '90s version, you can cut to commercial after a particularly tantalizing reveal, ramping up the anticipation and tension

"What always stays the same no matter what is fear of the unknown," said Grabinski. "What's around the corner? What's behind this mystery? Trying to solve it alongside the kids is as engaging as it is scary."

From Bloody Disgusting:

How the “Are You Afraid of the Dark?” Revival Went from a Movie to a TV Show to a Mini-Series [Interview]

For young horror fans in the 1990s, there was only one show that invited them to sit around a campfire and share scary stories: Are You Afraid of the Dark?, a seminal Nickelodeon anthology about a secret teenaged cabal, “The Midnight Society,” who gathered every week to share their tales of terror.

Are You Afraid of the Dark?, like many other nostalgia properties, is returning decades after its cancelation. But unlike similar retro kids horror franchises like Goosebumps and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, it’s not going to theaters. It’s not even going to be a TV series. It’s a three-part TV mini-series, written by BenDavid Grabinski (Skiptrace) and directed by Dean Israelite (Power Rangers), with the first installment airing on Nickelodeon on Friday, October 11.

Bloody-Disgusting took BenDavid Grabinski aside at a press event in Los Angeles to talk about the reboot’s evolution from a movie, to a TV series, to the mini-series fans are about to see. And like everything else in Hollywood, it’s quite a journey.

“I’m a huge, huge, huge, super obsessed fan [of Are You Afraid of the Dark?],” Grabinski explains. “I grew up with it. It’s like one of things that’s a giant nostalgia button for me.”

“I was writing a movie for this producer, Matt Kaplan, in summer 2018. It was another horror movie. At the time they were doing an Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie and he needed a writer to come in and I wasn’t really on anyone’s radar, because I wasn’t… I’d been working consistently for a long time but I wasn’t like an A-list dude,” Grabinski adds.

“But I was like, ‘Guys, I really, really, really love this and I feel like I know exactly what this movie should be.’ I wrote a 20-page single-spaced document, writing down what I thought a movie should be of Are You Afraid of the Dark?. Everyone was seemingly blown away by it,” Grabinski says, before he decides to correct himself. “You know, it’s not for me to say but it was enough that I got the job.”

So it seemed pretty straightforward. Are You Afraid of the Dark? was destined for theaters! But only for a little while…

“I wrote a bunch of drafts of that, and then I was directing a movie and while I was doing that I got a call from Nickelodeon saying, ‘Hey, we really liked your script for the movie. Do you have any idea of what we should do if we wanted to make a new show?’ and I immediately said yes, a thousand times, and went in and pitched a show, basically saying what I thought it should be,” Grabinski reveals, enthusiastically.

Alas, it was not to be.

“I got hired and then they decided my initial pitch was probably not a right thing for a first introduction to it, so they wanted me to come up with a new concept,” Grabinski explains. “Because I wanted to come up with something that would work for ten-year-olds who’d never seen it and for someone like me who grew up with it.”

“And I texted the producer, Spencer Berman: ‘I want to do an evil carnival. I want Rafael Casal to play the bad guy, Mr. Top Hat, who’s like an evil Willy Wonka.’ That’s really all I had,” Grabinski confesses. “They really, really responded to that, and then I broke the story for it and then it was like a bullet train because they decided, ‘Oh, we want it to be out next October.’ So I wrote three episodes, we met a bunch of directors, hired Dean [Israelite] and here we are!”

But where, exactly, are we? BenDavid Grabinski explains that this new mini-series isn’t an alternate version of the originally-planned movie, or an extended version of the pilot for the series Grabinski was planning. It’s an all-new, standalone, reintroduction to The Midnight Society… and maybe more.

“The story that I wanted to do [in the reboot series that was originally planned] was not necessarily an introduction to the Midnight Society,” Grabinski says. “What I realized afterwards was like, that’s the wish-fulfillment thing that I always wanted to see when I saw the pilot, which is… the very first episode starts with a kid in the woods, he sits down on a tree stump and they pull a thing off his head and they say ‘Hey, you’re going to tell a scary story and if we like it we’re going to let you into the group.’

“So I’m like, who is this kid? What would it be like to be asked? What is the best story to go into this about a kid who would be invited to join the group, they tell a story to audition, and then where does that story go from there?” Grabinski explains. “And that led to the carnival thing and a lot of other stuff.

“There’s some stuff I want to say and some stuff I don’t want to spoil because it has ‘twists and turns,’” Grabinski says, making air quotes with his hands to denote his self-effacing sarcasm. “Make sure you note that I had quotation marks on that, that I was being sarcastic.” [Editor’s Note: Done and done!]

“But what I realized was that the other idea I had would be like, a really good third season theory. So I put that in my back pocket and I still have that,” Grabinski teases.

BenDavid Grabinski added that the Are You Afraid of the Dark? mini-series could “ideally” lead to a new regular series. He’s quick to remind us that it’s not his decision to make, but that if it was, he’d green light it in a heartbeat.

“I’m not in charge of the purse-strings or the decision-making. I’m just a writer/executive producer person. But I would make a thousand episodes of the show, and I have a million ideas,” Grabinski concludes. “But this to me was the best way to meet the group and bring out this concept of The Midnight Society to a new generation of kids.”

From Bloody Disgusting:

‘Are You Afraid of the Dark?’ Writer Promises Horror Nerd References Galore [Interview]

Everyone’s favorite 1990s Nickelodeon horror anthology Are You Afraid of the Dark? returns to television this month, with a three episode mini-series that reintroduces The Midnight Society – a secret cabal of teenaged horror authors – and pits them against a real-life nightmare. There’s a mysterious and wicked carnival coming to their town of Argento, Oregon… and yes, that is totally a reference to the master of ultraviolent Italian thrillers, Dario Argento.

And that’s just one of many references to horror classics, cult classics and even earlier episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark? that screenwriter BenDavid Grabinski (Skiptrace) says savvy audience members are going to find in the new limited series.

“The school is Herbert West Middle School,” Grabinski cites as another example, referring to the antihero of H.P. Lovecraft’s original short story Herbert West: Re-Animator, as well as the gory horror comedy trilogy starring Jeffrey Combs. “It’s all very, very deeply nerdy but in a way that if you don’t know the references you won’t know [they’re] references.”

Grabinski is quick to point out that the references are “mostly mainstream,” but the screenwriter’s definition of “mainstream” may not necessarily apply to everyone in the audience for the family-friendly scary mini-series.

“The kids’ names are Rachel Carpenter, Graham Raimi, Gavin Coscarelli, Louise Fulci and then Akiko Yamato, and then her brother is Officer Hideo Yamato, which is [referencing] Hideo Kojima,” Grabinski explains, adding the creator of the ”Metal Gear Solid” video games to that list of cinematic Masters of Horror.

“So a bunch of just deeply nerdy stuff,” Grabinski says. “There’s a bad guy in the show, you’ll find out his real last name is Cochran because I really like Halloween III.”

“It’s one of those things where it’s like, it passed the smell test. I have a thousand references in it and no one on set knew they were references, which to me is the magical level,” Grabinski says. “It’s like some movies where it’s like, here’s Officer Spielberg and Romero, and I’m like, ‘Well, that’s a little too much.’ We all have our own internal barometer over what is too much and what is corny or too obscure.”

“I mean look, I have a kid talking about how his favorite composer is Wang Chung, so I don’t know how many people made a show with ten-year-olds where someone must really like the To Live and Die in L.A. score, but I’m also probably a crazy person,” Grabinski admits.

The references won’t stop with horror movies and video games and Wang Chung. Fans of Are You Afraid of the Dark? will notice shout outs to the original series, which may raise questions over whether this new limited series is technically a reboot, or set in the same continuity as the beloved 1990s show.

“The way that I view this show is that anything that happened before [in the original Are You Afraid of the Dark?] could have or might have happened,” Grabinski explains. “I’m trying to be a little vague about that. But there’s a lot of homages and Easter eggs to the other things, in a way that makes it seem like this is just a continuation as opposed to a reboot, per se.”

“I revisit a lot in this in some ways, direct and non-direct. Mostly non-direct,” Grabinski concludes.

But if you’re expecting Ryan Gosling to return in a homage to his first acting gig, an Are You Afraid of the Dark? episode called “The Tale of Station 109.1,” you MIGHT be disappointed.

“Here’s the thing: if we had Gosling I’m pretty sure he’d be a significant part of our marketing,” Grabinski laughs. “Or, we’re just so confident that we’re doing the Vin Diesel in Tokyo Drift thing, and at the end Ryan Gosling is just going to come up as like a headless horsemen, and he’s like, ‘Come on, kids! We have an adventure!’ and then leave.”

“And honestly I’d watch that,” Grabinski jokes. “Just, I called him, and he just didn’t call me back. I get it. I think Blade Runner 2049 is a masterpiece. But I understand that he probably wouldn’t want to do a Nickelodeon show.”

The new Are You Afraid of the Dark limited series premieres on Nickelodeon on Friday, October 11, 2019!

From Den of Geek:

Inside the Return of Are You Afraid of the Dark?

The cast and crew of Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot discuss bringing the beloved horror series back.

If you grew up in the '90s it's likely that one of your first brushes with horror was with the Canadian anthology horror show Are You Afraid of the Dark?. The cult hit aired on Nickelodeon for six years and scared a whole generation of kids silly. Now the great news for horror fans young and old is that the series is returning in a three part limited series on Nick. To celebrate the prestige reboot, Den of Geek was invited to Los Angeles' Haus of Creep to chat to some of the cast and creative team whilst trying not to get trapped in the immersive horror experience.

In the depths of ROW DTLA, Haus of Creep throws visitors into a dark world of influencers, twisted reflections, murder, and monsters. The scariest thing about the whole experience, however, is that you're an active part of the story. Once we'd battled through the harrowing hallways and strange storytimes -- one of which saw us being dragged into a closet and having the very hairs on our head threatened by a bald serial killer--we sat down with the new Midnight Society, which features some familiar faces you might know.

Rim of the World's Miya Cech takes on the role of Akiko, a passionate filmmaker who wants nothing more than to be a director. Sam Ashe Arnold from Best Worst Weekend Ever stars as Gavin, who seems to be the leader of the group. A burgeoning genre star in his own right, It's Jeremy Taylor plays deadpan joker, Gavin. And Black-ish's Lyliana Wray is the new girl, Rachel, whose test to become a member of the iconic scary story club is the inciting incident for the three episode miniseries.

Though in real life the things that scare the young cast are relatively normal --like heights, claustrophobia, and the dark-- the new series sees them face down a terrifying foe in the shape of Rafael Casal's Mr. Tophat, the ringmaster of a terrifying and possibly supernatural circus. Whilst that might sound like a narrative that's been done before, Are You Afraid of the Dark? aims to turn things on their head because the so-called Carnival of Doom appears only after a new member of the Midnight Society makes up a story featuring them.

“They go on an adventure, which I thought was the best of both worlds really because whenever I watched the show I always wanted to see what those kids did when they're away from the campfire. I wanted to see them live, I wanted to see their interests and all that stuff. But in the original pilot--which is perfect--it starts with a kid with the bag on their head and they get the chance to tell a campfire story and join the Midnight Society. But I always wanted to be like, 'Well, who is that person? How do they get chosen? What does it feel like? How do they maintain their secrecy?' All of that stuff to me felt really fun, like a wish fulfillment thing I hadn't necessarily seen yet."

With so many iconic episodes like "The Tale of the Dead Man's Float," and "The Tale of the Lonely Ghost", it's hard to pick a favorite. But writer Grabinski has appreciates the underdog and his tastes lean into the stranger offerings of the '90s classic.

"I really love the alien episodes, and our show, it's not a sci-fi but I do have a running gag where the kids are arguing about whether alien stories are horror or sci-fi,” he says. “It was also a way for me --if I'm lucky enough to do more of these-- to kind of set up and establish that we're at least dealing with sci-fi.”

The Midnight Society is made up of young actors who weren't even born when Are You Afraid of the Dark? first debuted, so it's unsurprising that most of them hadn't even heard of the series before getting the gig. But Cech did have a bit of a familial insight as her mom was a fan.

“My mom has watched the original version,” she says. “She's been telling me all about it and I've been able to see a couple of things. So that's pretty cool."

Ashe Arnold agrees and adds that the love for the original show has made taking on the job extra special.

"I didn't know what it was before I booked the job,” she says. “But upon being able to talk about it, everyone's reaction when they hear the name has been overwhelmingly positive. It's really cool to be a part of something that already has this, you know, gigantic, loyal fan base behind it and holding it up. It's exciting."

Wray was another Are You Afraid of the Dark? newbie when she got the job but she was shocked by how effective the classic series was.

"I had never heard about it before auditioning. But I've gotten to see a few episodes and it's a lot scarier than I expected it to be," she says.

Taylor was in a similar position despite his proven horror chops. "I didn't know it existed. And then I told my friends and family like, 'I just got this new role in a show called Are You Afraid of the Dark?' And they were like, 'Wait, that's coming back???' It's definitely like Sam said, it's really, really cool to be a part of something that already has a cult following."

Whereas the cast of Are You Afraid of the Dark? 2019 is just discovering the dark joys of the series, the people behind the camera are all huge fans of the show. Matt Kaplan--founder of ACE Entertainment (To All the Boys I Loved Before), which is producing both the show and the upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? movie, shared his excitement with us in the bustling bar.

"When we got approached to do both the movie and the show I think all of us were like this was one that was perfect for our company and we felt like it really represented our childhoods... and we wanted to scare some kids," Kaplan says. "We were really trying to do justice to the original series as we remade it. And hopefully we can build some stars as successful as Ryan Gosling."

For Grabinski, the joy came from creating a story for the young horror hounds who will get to enjoy the show this time around.

"The most fun thing to me is that you're making this show about kids who would watch the show,” he says. “If you're going to go out in the woods and tell scary stories then you love horror. And I just want it to feel like a love letter to the original show but also the genre. I'm such a big fan of both. Something that's very fun to me about having middle school kids who are really into, like, The Changeling and The Gate, and they read Lovecraft and talk about Tangerine Dream scores which is a little anachronistic in 2019, except this is about obsessives.

“The way I view it is that not all kids are gonna know these references, but the kids in the Midnight Society would. There's a fun feeling to have a kid watch it and go on their phone or their mom's phone and Google some sort of references they find. It's buried in references. That's not what I think that the appeal of the show is but I think it's sort of like a cherry on top."

And if young fans fall in love with horror through the lens of Are You Afraid of the Dark?, the cast and crew have some suggestions of other genre fare that they should explore. "Definitely Monster Squad, The Gate, and Poltergeist if their parents let them," Grabinski says. "It!" Cech adds. For Kaplan it’s all about the classics. "The Shining, and Scream... depending on how old they are," the producer says with a laugh.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? hits Nickelodeon on October 11.

From Seventeen.com:

Go Behind the Scenes of the Are You Afraid of the Dark? Reboot, If You Dare

The horrors aren't real... right?

Michael Courtney/Nickelodeon

Everyone remembers the first Are You Afraid of the Dark? episode they watched growing up. The Nickelodeon series was THE scariest thing on TV in the '90s. Just when fans conquered their nightmares from the OG series, a highly-anticipated reboot is just around the dark, creepy, totally sinister-looking corner.

A three-part special airs on Nickelodeon October 11, 18, and 25 at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), introducing die-hard AYAOTD fans, as well as first-time watchers, to another crop of Midnight Society members. Needless to say, we can't wait for this new chapter in the franchise. The trailer looks super creepy, and since the spooky special effects will undoubtedly be better than they were in the '90s, we just know this reboot will traumatize us all over again (but, like, in a good way).

Seventeen.com hung out in Vancouver on the set back in July, and we made sure to snap some fun pics and shoot some short videos of the movie magic in action.

So, if you need a reminder that the scares aren't actually ~real~, check out our behind-the-scenes footage. We're submitting it for your approval.

1.

Star Lyliana Wray (who plays Rachel Carpenter — her last name clearly an homage to famous horror movie director and writer, John Carpenter), looks totally chill standing next to a ~spooky~ zombie and showrunner/writer/executive producer BenDavid Grabinski.

To get the new Midnight Society kids in the zone for filming such a creepy project, BenDavid suggested they watch a list of horror movies, including The Monster Squad, The Gate, Poltergeist, and The Goonies.

While The Goonies isn't exactly terrifying, it's still a film about kids going on adventures with freaky outcomes. "To me, Goonies isn’t a horror movie, but what we’re trying to do, which is similar to what It did, is capture that joy of a kid-on-an-adventure thing, and then fusing that with horror, because I think they go together very well," BenDavid told Seventeen.com.

2.

Remember that episode of Rugrats where Chuckie was terrified to go down the big kid slide? If that slide had looked like the one on the Are You Afraid of the Dark? reboot, we wouldn't blame him.

When we asked Rafael Casal, who plays the villain Mr. Tophat, what one thing he wanted fans of the original series to know about the reboot, his response was chilling. Laughing, he said, "It will be just as scary for them as it is for kids."

3.

On the Set of the "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" Reboot

One of the eeriest moments we watched being filmed was the first glimpse audiences will get of Mr. Tophat. In the scene, Rachel runs past a door and he's illuminated behind her. We were watching from the video village area while a light board operator pressed a button at exactly the right time to reveal Mr. Tophat. You can hear director Dean Israelite yell "action" at the start of the clip.

If this moment looks familiar, that's because it was included in the trailer at the 39-second mark.

"I think the show is two things at once," BenDavid said, when asked what other horror movies or TV shows besides The X-Files influenced him while writing the script. "It is sort of a loving homage to the original show, but it is also, to me, a love letter to being a fan of horror itself — whether it is classic short stories by great authors or classic horror movies, classic horror TV shows."

4.

Moments after first filming that scene, Rafael watched the playback and freaked himself out. "Oh, these poor kids," he laments, followed by mischievous laughter.

Because his character is being kept under wraps leading up to the premiere, we have to simply speculate on who Mr. Tophat is as a person — or should we say evil entity?

When asked what some of his horror inspirations were to bring Mr. Tophat to life, Rafael said, "I think it’s probably a little bit of Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas, I think we got a little A Clockwork Orange in there, and I think we’ve got a little Moriarty from Sherlock gone insane."

When Rafael posted the first look photo on Instagram on September 14, he captioned it with clever puns that give us a clearer pic of who Mr. Tophat will (probably) be: "Young Trilly Wonka. Timothee ChalaBAY. Trap Skellington. Panic out in Frisco. Theezlejuice. The BAYest showman. Edward thizzlehands. The Mad Rapper."

We also feel like we should mention how Rafael hilariously couldn't stop messing with his snazzy Mr. Tophat pants during our interview. They are mesmerizing — like those sequin pillows that reveal an image or another color underneath. We can't wait to see them in action onscreen.

5.

After Rafael saw the scene, Lyliana came over to watch the playback, joined by BenDavid. While Rafael laughs, Lyliana smiles and says, "That's actually really cool."

Rafael admitted he didn't stay in character in between takes — meaning he wasn't scaring the kids when the cameras weren't rolling — but he did notice them staring at him.

At the time of the interview, many of the really scary scenes hadn't been filmed yet, so Rafael noted that because his teen co-stars had been spending so much time together, working on funny scenes and imaging the carnival, seeing him brought it all home.

"We haven’t shot the carnival yet. So, I think when I come on set, they’re reminded that there’s this whole other part that we haven’t gotten to yet that reminds them that the show is really scary."

6.

The Carnival of Doom's organ didn't look spooky in the daylight, sitting off on the side of the set while the opening scene was being filmed nearby, but you just know it will be creepy when it's on full display.

Interestingly, the character Graham (played by It and It Chapter Two star Jeremy Ray Taylor) is an aspiring composer who is particularly passionate about horror music. Could this play a part in the reboot, like how Andy had to play a bone organ during that intense scene in The Goonies?

7.

On the left is a photo we took on the set; on the right are two blink-and-you'll-miss-them moments from the AYAOTD trailer. The stage definitely looks 1000x cooler with lights and when it's ready for its closeup.

BenDavid told us this unique set piece is where we'll first see Mr. Tophat in full.

8.

Part of the same scene as when Rachel runs past an illuminated Mr. Tophat, this clip shows Lyliana taking direction from Dean Israelite, who tells her when to look towards the camera, as the camera follows her path. Poor Rachel is freaked TF out in this scene, breathing heavily, and it's probably all thanks to Mr. Tophat.

The original AYAOTD was crazy terrifying, and the reboot boasts to be no different. "All the adults who grew up on that show have this sort of delightful trauma in the back of their minds that we’re almost nostalgic about and want another dose of," Rafael said, laughing.

Both millennials and Gen Z-ers can enjoy this reboot because, as actor Sam Ashe Arnold says in the trailer, "We're all afraid of something."

"What kids don’t want to be in a crew of misfits doing something a little bit against the rules? And then who doesn’t want to watch that get out of hand and see how they navigate it?" Rafael continued. "I’m just so excited for friends of mine who also grew up on it to see it and see that it’s going to meet them where they’re at now and then also invite this whole new group of people."

The interviews conducted have been edited for length and clarity.

The cast of Nickelodeon's Are You Afraid of the Dark? recently sat down with ExtraTV to promote the highly anticipated reboot of the '90s Nickelodeon hit!

The '90s kids’ cult classic is coming back for a three-part limited series, reimagined for a new generation. The three new episodes will have members of the Midnight Society telling a terrifying story about the Carnival of Doom and its evil ringmaster.

One of the Nickelodeon’s most iconic series from the ‘90s, the original Are You Afraid of the Dark? delivered riveting stories of horror to young audiences, all from a kid’s perspective. Are You Afraid of the Dark? is owned by DHX and was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, who are also executive producers on the project.

What's your story: Meet Are You Afraid Of The Dark's new Midnight Society

When Nickelodeon announced it was bringing back Are You Afraid Of The Dark? for a spooky three-part limited series, the internet got goosebumps. Would the stories still thrill and chill? Would the show satisfy both nostalgic adults and scare-happy kids? And would the show still be incredibly Canadian?

The chilling answers to those questions will be fully revealed when the first episode of the series premieres Oct. 11, but for a small sneak peak, The A.V. Club sat down with the show’s all-new Midnight Society while on a set visit up in Vancouver. In the clip [here], the kids tell us about their characters, from the secretly dorky cheerleader to the Cronenberg-obsessed film buff.

Check out the awesome interview below, and make sure to catch the premiere The Casagrandes, a spinoff of Nick’s animated hit The Loud House, Monday, Oct. 14, at 1:30 p.m. (ET/PT), following an all-new Loud House at 1 p.m. (ET/PT), only on Nickelodeon!:

A new home in the city holds big adventures, laughs and love around every corner in Nickelodeon’s new original animated series The Casagrandes, premiering Monday, Oct.

Viacom and Virgin Media extend content partnership in multi-year agreement

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and Virgin Media have agreed a new multi-year distribution deal in the UK and Ireland spanning TV channels, on-demand rights and a range of new streaming applications.

The renewed partnership ensures Virgin Media customers will continue to enjoy access to some of their favourite TV networks including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount Network, as well as associated catch up rights and box sets.

As part of the new deal, Virgin Media will add three more of Viacom’s branded apps – My5, Pluto TV and MTV Play – to the app section of its user interface for the first time, making significant additional hours of content accessible to Virgin Media’s TV customers.

In addition to offering catch-up and extended on-demand access to a range of Channel 5 content, My5 also showcases a number of third-party ‘channels’ from partners including A+E and PBS America and a range of exclusive content including scripted series from the U.S., Australia and Israel.

Pluto TV, the ad-supported streaming platform acquired by Viacom earlier this year, features more than 60 channels in the UK including Pluto TV Drama, Pluto TV Romance and Pluto TV Crime, plus thousands of movies and series on-demand – all of which will be made available for Virgin Media customers to enjoy.

For the first time, Virgin Media’s Player TV and Mixit TV customers will be able to access MTV’s award-winning content through the MTV Play app which will also be available on Virgin Media’s TV service, offering 1,800 hours of Box Set content as well as the MTV channel and catch up services.

Virgin Media Subscribers to the MTV channel will continue to be able to enjoy catch up and Box Set content as part of their existing subscription in addition to access to the standalone MTV Play app for no additional fee.

Update (10/10) - Virgin Media is slated add Nick Jr. HD, a simulcast of the main Nick Jr. SD channel with programming broadcast in high definition, soon, reports to Virgin Media insider Media Boy! Nick Jr. HD is currently only available on Sky in the UK and Ireland.

Media Boy Blog also reports that Viacom could be planning to either turn MTV Classic into an on demand only service or to axe the channel completely.

The news follows Viacom and Virgin partnering in May 2018 for the UK debut of Nick Play, an enhanced version of the Nickelodeon Play app and Viacom's first mobile streaming app featuring long form content, which gives Virgin Media customers who subscribe to the Nickelodeon channels free access to the Nick Play VOD mobile app.

Arran Tindall, Senior Vice President (SVP), Commercial and Content Distribution, for Viacom International Media Networks, said: “This renewed and broadened partnership with Virgin Media speaks to the strength of our brands and content, as well as our investment in new streaming apps, which will allow Virgin Media customers to access their favourite Viacom content in new ways. Virgin Media has a great track record of innovation as a platform and as a partner and we’re delighted to have reached agreement with them to deliver further innovation for the benefit of their customers.”

David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, added: “This is great news for our customers who can continue to enjoy Viacom’s diverse range of channels and content. The inclusion of three brand new apps will give our customers greater flexibility to watch their favourite shows at a time that suits them.”

The pact includes on-demand access to series such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Paw Patrol and The Loud House, MTV UK reality series Geordie Shore, and Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer, among others.

The previous agreement was due to expire at the end of August 2019. For a brief period of time, Virgin Media viewers reported on social media and customer forums that they could see pop-up messages on various Viacom channels warning them that various Viacom services would be withdrawn at midnight 31st August into 1st September. A short-lived website was launched informing viewers of the channels that would be withdrawn from the cable platform.
