New Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Insights Research Reveals Live Experiences Are More Popular Than Material Goods, Whilst Kids Are Increasingly Having Greater Roles in Household Decisions

New research from Viacom shows experiences are trending stronger than material goods, while kids have an increased sway over household decisions.


Kids and families today are finding increased value in live experiences over material goods, a new Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Insights report reveals. Every Age, Every Aisle, Everywhere: Understanding Consumers Today connected with people ages six to 54 from more than 31 countries.

The key finding from the report was that when it comes to happiness, across all ages, it’s about time—not about having plenty of money. On Viacom’s rank of the top five sources of happiness, “spending time with family and friends” took the top slot, while “time for fun and relaxation” and “going away on holiday” were both growing. Ending the list were “being successful” and “having plenty of money.” This is a marked difference from 2012′s findings, which saw success and money ranking higher in the list.

The study found that there’s value in providing people the opportunity to participate in experiences, especially with friends and family. Facilitating shared experiences helped keep everyone in the household happy. Exclusive experiences were deemed the “ultimate status symbol,” making it a big deal for people to be the first to discover something. Kids are having an increasing sway over these decisions as well: 70% of children have a role in deciding where the family will go on vacation, while nearly eight in 10 kids have a say when it comes to deciding how to spend their free time. (And, echoing recent trends in the food aisle, 77% of kids have a say when it comes to mealtimes.) Nine in 10 parents, meanwhile, believe they should always listen their kids’ opinions before making decisions that affect them.

This data backs an ongoing trend toward live experiences in the kids industry. According to Expedia, 74% of Americans prioritize experiences over products these days, and 65% of brands say that live events and experiential programs are directly related to sales.

Nickelodeon has launched several live experiences in the last several years, including SLIMEFEST, NickFest, Nickelodeon x Carney, and a Slime City, an All That Good Burger Pop-up, and will soon be launching the SpongeBob SquarePants: The Bikini Bottom Experience pop-up in L.A. later this month. Tru Kids Brands, parent company of Toys “R” Us, is partnering with candy-themed experiential adventure company Candytopia on a new immersive pop-up that was made for Instagram, while toycos like Hasbro and Mattel continue to launch their own location-based efforts. Nickelodeon's sister network, Comedy Central, also has Comedy Central Presents Clusterfest.

Viacom’s data also revealed that “emotional resonance and release”—getting people to feel happy, sad, angry or sympathetic—helps people cope and allows families to bond.

Representing the diversity of today’s families and reflecting their realities was also found to be incredibly important. Inclusion and realness is increasingly valued by all age groups, with the report quoting a 30-year-old respondent saying “characters that look, think, dress, talk [or] walk like you, any of those little things can go a long way.”

Nickelodeon Turkey to Premiere 'Hunter Street' Season 3 on Monday 7th October 2019

Mystery and adventure returns to Nickelodeon in the third season of the hit live-action series Hunter Street, premiering Monday 7th October 2019 at 20:55 on Nickelodeon Turkey (Türkiye)! Following launch, new episodes of Hunter Street season three will continue to air weekdays at 20:55 on Nickelodeon in Türkiye.


A lot has changed for the Hunter family in season three, and a mysterious treasure map brings them on a new and exciting adventure. The Hunter kids will once again need to work together, along with some new friends, to uncover the hidden treasure, outwit dangerous enemies, and discover major secrets about their family’s past along the way.

In the premiere episode, "The Birthday Gift", Anika is celebrating her 14th birthday when she is sent an unusual present – a miniature pyramid wrapped inside a torn treasure map. Before the kids can figure out what it means and who sent it, their parents announce they’ve booked a vacation to get away from renovations at the Hunter Museum. Once there, Sal discovers the gifts tied to a long-lost Aztec treasure – and an ancient curse. A new mystery has begun!

Hunter Street season three stars Kyra Smith as the outgoing leader Anika; Daan Creyghton as Sal, the genius of the bunch; Kate Bensdorp as the adventurous and youngest Hunter sibling Evie; Wilson Radjou-Pujalte as the talented artist Jake; Eliyha Altena as their quirky new friend Oliver; and Sarah Nauta as their brave new friend Jasmyn. Both Altena and Nauta also appeared in the Dutch counterpart of Hunter Street, De Ludwigs.

London, UK - Channel 5’s popular pre-school block Milkshake! will premiere the brand-new animated preschool series Becca's Bunch on Monday 7th October 2019 at 8:25am! Following its debut, Milkshake! will continue to air brand-new episodes of Becca's Bunch, which follows the adventures of a unique little bird who has a big heart weekdays at 8:25am.


In Wagtail Woods a unique little bird with a big heart called Becca and her bunch of friends are always ready for action! Becca has a innate curiosity and a wonderful way of looking at things. She sees adventure in every situation and as a result often bites off more than she can chew, landing herself and the bunch - Russell, Sylvia and Pedro - in some sticky situations. Thinking on her feet, Becca will urge a generation of kids never to give up, aim high and have big ideas, because once they do every day will be an adventure!


From her quirky dress sense to her hobbies, Becca is a bird like no other and chirps to her own tune. Her can-do attitude allows her big ideas to take flight on the most fantastical adventures with her three best friends. Becca’s infectious enthusiasm encourages her besties, aka The Wild Bunch, to seek out adventure in Wagtail Woods and boldly go where no bird, worm, squirrel and fox have gone before. The Wild Bunch haven’t been everywhere, but it’s on Becca’s list! With unique ideas, heart and positive thinking, the gang always manage to overcome any challenge they encounter in Wagtail Woods.

Becca's Bunch is an exciting entertainment show for preschoolers which merges live action, puppetry and 2D and 3D animation to create a textured world that the audience wants to reach out and touch!

Becca's Bunch (52 x 11') is produced by Dublin-based creative production, distribution and licensing company JAM Media. Nickelodeon acquired the exclusive broadcast rights to the series in the US and Pay TV rights for the rest of the world in October 2016. Becca's Bunchmade its debut on Nick Jr. UK & Ireland on Monday 2nd July 2018, and is currently rolling out the series onto Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. channels around the world. In addition, terrestrial broadcasters ABC Australia, CBC Kids (Canada) and France Télévisions (France) have picked up the series for their respective countries.

Talking about the series, Nickelodeon Senior Vice President (SVP) of International Production and Development Nina Hahn says the project was introduced to her and Nick’s Vice President (VP) of Content Acquisitions, Layla Lewis, at a very early stage. And it was love at first sight.


“[JAM Media] showed us the short even before they did the formal pitch into our larger group, which allowed us to give them feedback from multiple different filters on what we wanted to see,” Hahn says. “The content itself had a lot of the DNA of Nickelodeon, from the visual quirkiness, to the way the characters were developed and its strong female lead at the center. It really tapped into the kind of broad, emotional and simple ideas that we like to work with.”

Jam Media, which has studios in both Dublin and Belfast in Northern Ireland, pitched the series at Cartoon Forum in 2013 under the title Early Bird.

The news follows JAM Media naming JAKKS Pacific as the global master toy licensee for Becca’s Bunch. JAKKS has secured the exclusive global rights to produce figurines, playsets and accessories, vehicles, musical instruments, plush (feature and non-feature), every day dress-up, role play, arts & crafts, board games and accessories, Halloween costumes and accessories, outdoor/indoor furniture, wagons, ride-ons, play tents, ball pits, balls and outdoor games, all based on the spritely bird and her group of animal friends. Plush, figurines, musical instruments, vehicles and playsets are planned for a Fall 2019 launch at US retail. JAKKS joins previously signed Becca’s Bunch licensees Candlewick Press, which has taken publishing rights for the US, and Egmont, which is signed on for publishing in the rest of the world. Both companies are planning a Fall 2019 retail launch in key territories.

Nick Lachey, the host of America’s Most Musical Family, has revealed that Nickelodeon USA will premiere the network's brand-new musical competition series on Friday, November 1, 2019!

In an interview with FoodSided about his new partnership with Subway to encourage families to 'adopt' ugly vegetables, Lachey, the front-man of 98 Degrees, dished: "I’m excited about a new show, called America’s Most Musical Family that I’m hosting for Nickelodeon, which premiers November 1st, and I’m still preforming with 98 Degrees. We have a handful of shows still between now and the end of the year and other shows already lined up for next year. So I’m excited to be hopefully in a city near you soon."

Nickelodeon sets the stage with an all-star celebrity lineup for the network’s new music competition show, America’s Most Musical Family. Grammy Award-winning global superstar Ciara, who is an executive producer, digital media sensation David Dobrik and singer-songwriter, record producer and actress Debbie Gibson will serve as series judges alongside host Nick Lachey, as 30 talented families compete for a recording contract with Republic Records and a $250,000 cash prize.

America’s Most Musical Family was first announced in February as part of Nickelodeon’s biggest, most wide-ranging content slate ever. The 12-episode series filmed in Los Angeles during summer 2019 and is scheduled to premiere later this fall on Nickelodeon in the U.S. and YTV in Canada.

Nick & Disney’s non-fiction growth strategies

Looking to tap into co-viewing opportunities on traditional TV and streaming, the kidcos are stacking their slates with family-friendly unscripted content.

Let’s get real. It’s no secret that SVOD services, especially Netflix, continue to lure young audiences away from the big three kids cable broadcasters. In 2018, Disney XD, Nickelodeon and CN’s average combined ratings dropped 29%, according to analyst Nielsen.

Nick and Disney, in particular, remain invested in what they do best—animated comedies and live-action sitcoms and movies. But as of late, both kidsnets are also diversifying into original unscripted content.

The genre, which includes reality TV, competition, game show and documentary formats, has been a bright spot for television over the last decade, while other categories have diminished. According to Nielsen, between 2011 and 2018 the combined viewing share of syndicated TV series, movies and kids programming fell to 36%, from 52%, among viewers ages two and up. Unscripted content, however, rose to 32% last year (from 24% in 2011).

Kids have played a big role in the success of the genre because they latch onto the same primetime shows their parents watch. Now, nearly every successful reality competition TV format for the coveted 18-to-49 demographic has a pint-sized version for children. Shows like Fox’s MasterChef Junior, Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship and ITV’s The Voice Kids have all spawned multiple seasons since launching and are bolstering the overall presence of the brands.

While Nickelodeon had success with unscripted content in the past with ’80s and ’90s competition game shows like Double Dare and Legends of the Hidden Temple (both of which have been revived), its strategy shifted away from non-fiction as animation became more popular worldwide, says Rob Bagshaw, EVP of unscripted content.

But when Brian Robbins took over as president at the end of 2018, he saw the wave of young viewers tuning in to popular unscripted formats for wide audiences and wanted to renew Nick’s investment in the genre, Bagshaw says.

To fully optimize its non-fiction ambitions with cost-efficient reboots that can be made quickly—as well as original content featuring more tweens and diverse families—Nick launched its first official unscripted division in January under the leadership of Bagshaw. A former Bunim/Murray Productions exec, Bagshaw heads up the development and production of unscripted content across all Nick formats and platforms—including reality competition shows and marquee live events like the Kids’ Choice and Sports Awards. He previously worked on unscripted hits including RuPaul’s Drag Race, Top Chef Masters and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge.

In June, the burgeoning division hired another Bunim/Murray alum, Paul Medford. As VP of current series, Medford is in charge of Nick’s current slate of live-action unscripted shows, including America’s Most Musical Family, The Substitute and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. Rounding out the development team is VP of live-action development Mandel Ilagan, and senior director of development Stacey Carr, who recently joined from Endemol Shine. Bagshaw says additional staff will be hired as more shows are greenlit. The unit’s slate consists of about a dozen greenlit, pre-production or production projects.

For its adaptation of Fox hit Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, Bagshaw says it was important to appeal to the widest audience possible, which led to the casting of WWE star John Cena as the show’s host.

“John Cena has huge co-viewing potential,” says Bagshaw. “But to make the show appropriate for Nick, we show him in a new light as a comedian, and pivoted the format to focus on the fifth graders, rather than the adult contestants.”

So far, the strategy is paying off. The revival’s June 10 premiere delivered double-digit increases in viewership with kids (21%) and adults (34%) over the prior four-week time slot averages, according to Nielsen.

As new shows roll out, the division is taking internal and external pitches for concepts that could live on any platform, and is seeking new production partners to collaborate with.

“In researching what our audience is watching and what they want to see, there are three key areas that resonate with our demo: comedy, music and competition,” says Bagshaw.

Nick is also looking for opportunities to develop more factual-driven, long-form stories—including, potentially, hour-long content for YouTube or other digital platforms—but Bagshaw says more development time is required to find the right projects. It also plans to develop factual linear content for 2020 similar to one of the kidsnet’s longest-running series, Nick News, which aired from 1992 to 2015—though no timeline for delivery has been set yet.

“Nick News allowed for serious conversations about pop culture or newsworthy moments. Our audience today is smarter and more aware than ever—we would be doing them a disservice if we didn’t provide opportunities to have those conversations,” says Bagshaw.

Disney, meanwhile, recently named former Marvel, ABC and ESPN Films exec Dan Silver as VP of original unscripted content for Disney+ in the lead up to the SVOD’s November 12 launch.

Unscripted shows headed to the service include Disneynature feature film Dolphin Reef; six x half-hour guide dog show Pick of the Litter; student competition series Shop Class; aspirational program Marvel’s Hero Project; global scavenger hunt series The Maze; and the high school musical-themed Encore.

For its real-world stories, the House of Mouse is looking for inspirational, aspirational, heroic, grounded and feel-good narratives that embody not only Disney, but also its sub-brands, including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Nat Geo.

As for Disney’s take on formatted competition series, Silver says there is value in them and the sub-genre is healthy, but the company is mindful about how they are produced.

“Sometimes competition can be leveraged for what I would call ‘fabricated drama,’” says Silver. “In non-fiction programming, there’s a tendency to have the issue lead [the plot], and then the narrative and the characters inform the issue. For us, the people we follow lead [the story], and if there are issues that are contained within the narratives, they inform the character. If you know the people, you’re going to care about whatever they’re going through.”

Some Disney+ unscripted shows are also taking a slightly more niche-driven approach to how they target their audiences.

For example, Encore is made for adults because it brings together former castmates of a high school musical and tasks them with recreating their original performance during a reunion. The series will be available for the November 12 launch and is executive produced by Frozen actress Kristen Bell.

“Encore is a proper adult show. But it’s about adults going back to high school. If you’re nine, 15 or 18 and love theater, you’re going to watch the show, too,” says Silver.

According to children’s media consultant Rick Clodfelter, kids want genuine, heartfelt, diverse and relatable content that entertains, which is why many unscripted series and formats for all ages are resonating across platforms. In short, they want to see real people.

“There is unfortunately a lot of turmoil in the world, so inclusive unscripted content is more important than ever,” he says.
The co-viewing opportunity is also going to be a big driver for the genre. According to media and consumer analyst GfK MRI, co-viewing is on the rise, and opportunities exist for both streaming and linear platforms. Its latest research found that 49% of US adults say they are co-viewing more now than they did three years ago, and parents are more likely to be watching with their kids.

As for the type of content adults watch with their children, kids television was the number-one response for co-viewing ahead of movies.

And as more young parents shift to streaming services (the report found that 72% of 18- to 34-year-olds used SVODs as their co-viewing medium of choice), streamers are rushing to fill their video consumption needs at a much quicker pace.

Clodfelter notes that family-friendly, live-action unscripted shows are quicker to make compared to animation. “The turnaround is faster, and they tend to be a little more cost-efficient, so there’s a big financial benefit as well,” he says.

Looking forward, Clodfelter sees bigger unscripted opportunities in the preschool space, pointing to the success of Nickelodeon series Ryan’s Mystery Playdate.

Created and produced by digital media company Pocket.watch, the live-action/animated preschool show stars seven-year-old YouTube star Ryan and his family as they attempt physical challenges and unboxing puzzles to reveal celebrity playdates.

The April premiere drew 5.5 million viewers and was tops among kids ages two to 11 in its 12:30 p.m. time slot across all TV, according to Nickelodeon.

“YouTube caters to what kids want to see in the moment, but how do you take what’s precious about that short-form content and flip it into an 11-minute show?” asks Clodfelter.

“Ryan’s Mystery Playdate manages to honor the original, and extend it to a very different long-form series.”

But even with the demand for more content and influencer opportunities in the unscripted and scripted space, challenges remain—especially for traditional TV channels that target the whole family.

For example, Nielsen reported Universal Kids and Discovery Family saw respective ratings declines of 73% and 46% in 2018. In June, NBCU-owned Universal Kids halted production on originals altogether. It’s not known if any of the net’s previously commissioned unscripted shows, including Top Chef Junior and American Ninja Warrior Junior, will have the option of new seasons after they air as scheduled.

These concerns aren’t enough to deter the growing non-fiction movement, however.

At Nickelodeon, Bagshaw sees the expansion into unscripted shows that kids and families can enjoy together as a big plus for the long-term sustainability of the network.

“One of the reasons we’re focused on co-viewing is so we can keep our audience,” he says. “If our unscripted division has the same success that Nickelodeon has had with its big animation titles, then our audience will stay with us for a long time.”

Lysol Partners with Nickelodeon for 'Slime School', An Interactive Online Curriculum That Encourages Healthy Habits at School and at Home

Every year 60 million school days are missed by children nationwide due to preventable illnesses like cold and flu, taking away the wonder of learning and lasting experiences they gain in the classroom. To help ensure that children are engaging in the classroom to learn, grow and thrive, Lysol® has officially announced that it is building on its commitment to promoting healthy habits by partnering with Nickelodeon to expand the Lysol Healthy Habits program and introduce "Slime School," an interactive online curriculum that encourages healthy habits at school and at home!


The new "Slime School" will include redesigned lesson plans, animated videos promoting healthy behaviors, and age-appropriate printables for teachers and parents to use with kids. Developed in partnership with the National Education Association (NEA) and National Parent Teacher Association (PTA), with messaging support from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Lysol Healthy Habits program includes 30 interactive and downloadable activities and lesson plans for teachers and parents of children grades K-5, to help them build illness-prevention habits.

As part of the initiative, actor, singer and dancer Alyson Stoner (Drake & Josh, Step Up 3) went undercover as The Substitute to teach kids Lysol Healthy Habits:



"Our "Here for Healthy Schools" program has been made even better! By teaming up with Nickelodeon to create the Slime School, we’re making teaching healthy habits and helping prevent the spread of germs even more exciting. Watch fun videos and teach children through interactive lessons where germs live, and the simple steps children can take to help avoid illness -- so they can replace sick days with Slime Days!"

Lysol has also announced the launch of the 'Here for Healthy Schools' campaign to introduce its mission: curbing the spread of illness in classrooms. To emphasize the importance of preventing the spread of germs and illness and the perpetual abundance of illness-related absenteeism, Lysol is partnering with Sarah Michelle Gellar, actor (best known for her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer), entrepreneur and mother of two school-aged children, who understands first-hand the importance of keeping children healthy and in school.

"Growing up with a mother who was a teacher, and now with two school-aged children of my own, I've seen the importance of keeping students healthy so that they can be present in the classroom for valuable lessons and to create lasting friendships," said Sarah Michelle Gellar. "I am proud to partner with Lysol, a brand committed to helping protect children from illness and keeping schools healthy."

In support of its mission, this school year Lysol is expanding its partnership with Kinsa, maker of the first FDA-cleared smart thermometer, with a $1.5 million investment to provide smart thermometers to 1,300 schools across the country. Kinsa smart thermometers and the connected mobile app give nurses a dedicated platform to help parents anonymously understand which illnesses are circulating through schools and the ability to post messages so that teachers and parents can track symptoms and illnesses among students in real time and guide them through next steps.

"At Lysol, we aim to help educate and inform parents and schools so that they can work to reduce the rate of illness in classrooms," said Ferran Rousaud, Marketing Director, Lysol. "The impact of sick days is wide-ranging for both parents and students, and we are proud to continue our efforts to prevent sick days and promote healthy habits among children."

To ensure teachers have the supplies they need in the classroom to combat harmful germs, Lysol is also continuing its partnership with Box Tops for Education – through which it has donated more than $2.5 million to-date to schools across the country over the past three years – and will continue to serve as a sponsor of the WebMD Cold & Flu Map, which helps parents and schools keep their finger on the pulse of cold and flu activity nationwide.

Viacom and Virgin Media extend content partnership in multi-year agreement


Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) and Virgin Media have agreed a new multi-year distribution deal in the UK and Ireland spanning TV channels, on-demand rights and a range of new streaming applications.

The renewed partnership ensures Virgin Media customers will continue to enjoy access to some of their favourite TV networks including Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons, MTV, Comedy Central and Paramount Network, as well as associated catch up rights and box sets.

As part of the new deal, Virgin Media will add three more of Viacom’s branded apps – My5, Pluto TV and MTV Play – to the app section of its user interface for the first time, making significant additional hours of content accessible to Virgin Media’s TV customers.

In addition to offering catch-up and extended on-demand access to a range of Channel 5 content, My5 also showcases a number of third-party ‘channels’ from partners including A+E and PBS America and a range of exclusive content including scripted series from the U.S., Australia and Israel.

Pluto TV, the ad-supported streaming platform acquired by Viacom earlier this year, features more than 60 channels in the UK including Pluto TV Drama, Pluto TV Romance and Pluto TV Crime, plus thousands of movies and series on-demand – all of which will be made available for Virgin Media customers to enjoy.

For the first time, Virgin Media’s Player TV and Mixit TV customers will be able to access MTV’s award-winning content through the MTV Play app which will also be available on Virgin Media’s TV service, offering 1,800 hours of Box Set content as well as the MTV channel and catch up services.

Virgin Media Subscribers to the MTV channel will continue to be able to enjoy catch up and Box Set content as part of their existing subscription in addition to access to the standalone MTV Play app for no additional fee.

The news follows Viacom and Virgin partnering in May 2018 for the UK debut of Nick Play, an enhanced version of the Nickelodeon Play app and Viacom's first mobile streaming app featuring long form content, which gives Virgin Media customers who subscribe to the Nickelodeon channels free access to the Nick Play VOD mobile app.

Arran Tindall, Senior Vice President (SVP), Commercial and Content Distribution, for Viacom International Media Networks, said: “This renewed and broadened partnership with Virgin Media speaks to the strength of our brands and content, as well as our investment in new streaming apps, which will allow Virgin Media customers to access their favourite Viacom content in new ways. Virgin Media has a great track record of innovation as a platform and as a partner and we’re delighted to have reached agreement with them to deliver further innovation for the benefit of their customers.”

David Bouchier, Chief Digital Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media, added: “This is great news for our customers who can continue to enjoy Viacom’s diverse range of channels and content. The inclusion of three brand new apps will give our customers greater flexibility to watch their favourite shows at a time that suits them.”

The pact includes on-demand access to series such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Paw Patrol and The Loud House, MTV UK reality series Geordie Shore, and Comedy Central's Inside Amy Schumer, among others.

The previous agreement was due to expire at the end of August 2019. For a brief period of time, Virgin Media viewers reported on social media and customer forums that they could see pop-up messages on various Viacom channels warning them that various Viacom services would be withdrawn at midnight 31st August into 1st September. A short-lived website was launched informing viewers of the channels that would be withdrawn from the cable platform.
