Craig Bartlett Talks Hey Arnold!, Steve Viksten, The Ultimate Collection, and a Potential Season 6

Fans of Nickelodeon’s beloved '90s animated series Hey Arnold! can now own the entire animated series with Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution's brand-new DVD boxset, Hey Arnold!: The Ultimate Collection!

To celebrate the release, Flickering Myth writer Red Stewart got the chance to speak with Hey Arnold! creator Craig Bartlett! A American animator who has been working in the animation and television industries since the late-80s, Craig is best known for creating the cartoon serials Hey Arnold!, Dinosaur Train, and Ready Jet Go!.

Check out Red's awesome interview with Craig below, via flickeringmyth.com!:

Mr. Bartlett, thank you so, so much for talking to me sir. Hey Arnold! was one of those shows that had a profound impact on me in terms of life and creativity, so to be able to speak to you is a great honor.

Thank you, I love hearing this! These are great days for Hey Arnold! because so many people who literally grew up on it and were kids watching it are now out in the world being pros, you know writing and drawing. I can’t believe the talent of the people who are doing Arnold fan-art now. So it’s really cool to see people grow up and respond to it.

No, for sure. For me, it was more about the life lessons the show taught. Thank you so much again.

You bet, my pleasure.

This is a show that seems to keep on giving for you. Two years ago we had the 20th anniversary, last year was the Jungle Movie, and now this year we have the Ultimate Collection coming out on DVD. I know you’re busy with Ready Jet Go!, but what’s it honestly like knowing that one of your creations continues to have a lasting legacy almost a quarter of a century later?

It’s so great, it’s super satisfying because you see this collection and you get to see everything, from the very first claymation short that I made to the first 2-D pilot and then all the episodes with the two movies. And so you get to see the whole arc of the show. I was just talking about how the techniques have changed and changed again since we started. The claymation short was something else entirely! But the Nickelodeon Arnold pilot that we made was shot on film. I remember that it was edited on a moviola [laughs].

[Laughs]

Now they’re completely lost in time. That’s how long the show’s been around, it’s crazy.

No, you’re right. Everyone seems to be switching to flash animation, like Arthur transitioned to it. I understand that things change, but luckily the show remains a constant.

That was the goal!

[laughs] One of the reasons it resonates so much is that you and the writers tackled a lot of mature themes and topics that are still relevant today. You talked about child neglect, poverty, homosexuality, bullying, etc….I’m wondering, how did you all strike a balance between not being too subtle and not being preachy?

Oh, that’s a good question. We knew we shouldn’t be preachy, we were always trying to be more gritty and realistic, but we also said the lesson learned has to come….you know, it’s always a little bit ironic. The victory is very tiny, like the characters will get what they hoped for, but then it has to get taken away or “that was meant to be.” You might get a little bit further along in trying to convince somebody of something or change someone, but really tomorrow’s going to be another day and it’s going to kind of go back to the status quo. And that was partly because we were making a TV show, and we knew you want to return to the status quo. The funny stories, the set-ups are still there, however we were also trying to make the kids learn a little bit.

There were examples. Like Harold started out as a pretty one-dimensional bully and we thought, what can we do with Harold? I wanted to redeem him just episode-by-episode because in the beginning he was like, if Arnold did something wrong, he was going to pound him. So there was a threat of violence. And I wanted to make it that finally Harold would like Arnold so much that he would never pound him. It was fun. It was sort of like they were really alive [laughs].

[laughs]

And every time we did another story, we had a chance to grow them more. But you know, here we are, almost 25 years later, and they’re still supposed to essentially be who they are.

That makes sense. Keeping true to the characters, but also giving them room to grow. And speaking of Harold, one of my personal favorite episodes was that one where he’s attracted to the new classmate [editor’s note- “Hey Harold!”]….

Oh Big Patty?

Yeah, Big Patty! And it’s always stayed with me because I had a similar experience where I liked a girl but I wasn’t sure if others in my circle would have liked her. It always almost brings tears to my eyes seeing it.

I thought the Harold/Big Patty thing was great. We did a little bit with Harold and Big Patty with that episode in particular. Steve Viksten wrote the first one where Harold and Patty hit it off and at the end he’s going to stand up for her. Steve loved the movie Marty with Ernest Borgnine, and he always wanted to do a Marty story, and that’s where we landed with Harold and Big Patty.

It was great because then, once we did that, Harold had grown up even more: he’d evolved even more, and now there was something to watch- what’s going to happen between him and Big Patty? And so, I love how the kids who were fans and are now adults, how they love to do all these hook-ups between the characters, and they’re always shipping for like “no, no Harold and Rhonda!” [laughs]

[laughs]

I personally find it kind of hilarious and it just goes to show that there’s something sticky about the characters. People really like the one character with another and they’ll be rooting for them. It makes me laugh to think of fans being serious about it, like “well, what kind of relationship would Harold and Patty have when they were 30?” [laughs].

Well, that just goes to show how these characters continue to stay with people and how well you and the writing team did to make them stand out, especially in an ensemble cast. And I’d just like to give my condolences for the passing of the talented Mr. Viksten. I know it’s been four years, but he was one of the greats. He contributed to several of my favorite shows including Recess and obviously Hey Arnold!.

Yeah, if you get a chance, you could always see who wrote the episodes in the credits. And he, as you know, wrote some great Rugrats stories too.

Yeah, that’s right, he did Rugrats as well.

He had a huge influence on the humor of Rugrats and on the humor of Hey Arnold! And Steve could do poignant as well as anybody too. Some of Steve’s stories were the saddest ones. We all really liked to write sad stories [laughs]. But, you know, some better than others. And Steve was a great, great writer.

For sure, he and the writer’s room deserve huge props.

We were really lucky too. It was cool. It was kind of unusual what we were doing in the mid-90s. For most of the cartoons, people wanted to write them in storyboard. However, we wanted to write scripts, record them, make radio plays, and then hand out the radio play to the board team to draw. Therefore, it was more tight and restricted than when the board artists could write their own stuff, but it was just the way that we set it up. We were doing something a little different; we weren’t doing what everyone else was doing.

Oh, so the voice artists influenced the storyboarding and animation?

Super true. Often, I would have the storyboard team come to the recording sessions because of that. Like sometimes you can literally draw something and show it to cast and say “see, this is what we were thinking.” And the kids loved it, the actors who cracked the artists up, to be able to see the process. You know, people always love watching an artist sit there and draw a picture in a minute; it’s always amazing.

And yeah, the actors very much participated in it. When I think about it, the show’s characters developed into who they were partly because of the people who played them. Dan Castellaneta brought so much to Grandpa, Tress MacNeille to Grandma. And for Big Bob and Miriam Pataki, Maurice LaMarche and Kath Soucie turned them into who they were. And Francesca Smith, who played Helga, was just amazing. She would come in and record and I would realize what she could do and then I’d go “man, I’ve got to write a scene like that.” And it actually influenced the writing of Helga knowing that we were writing it for Frannie: that she was going to come in and crush it [laughs].

So yeah, the actors brought a ton to their characters and it was really fun to see them. We recorded once a week for, I don’t know, a part of the year, and the other half they were off doing something else. But I worked steadily for about six years on Hey Arnold! and we saw a lot of those actors over the years. People truly got to know each other and what they could do and it was a fun way to go. Making that many episodes with that many people, what a blast! I’m so glad I got to create so many. It’s amazing to look at them all now and go “wow, that is a lot.”

No for sure. And speaking of that, I was surprised to see that you actually cast kids to play the characters in Hey Arnold! Usually adult voice actors and actresses take on that responsibility, as you have experienced with Ready Jet Go!. What’s the difference between working with younger people to develop these characters compared to working with adults?

Kids really do bring a kid mentality to their work, because that’s who they are. Some of them are like little grownups, like Francesca and Anndi McAfee, who played Phoebe, they were little adults [laughs]. But the truth is a nine-year old kid has a different sound. The thing that happens is, when they grow older, they can still approximate that sound, but they don’t have that little unformed valve that a nine-year old has where they are literally growing their teeth in. It’s so funny how, by using a child voice actor, it made an authentic sound that I think our audience responded to; they believed they were looking at a kid character and you could tell.

And that’s what I liked about it. The actors were little and they turned into teenagers and basically all those kids got to grow up together. They were friends, the kids who were in the cast of Hey Arnold! They loved hanging out, it was a great bunch.

I’m glad to hear that they had that connection and that that the chemistry came out in the show. And speaking of children, when we’re talking about cartoons that are geared towards kids, I’m curious to hear your thoughts on current shows that try to depict tougher issues. Censors are laxer these days- I mean yes, you can’t show blood anymore, but you can be more open about societal topics, and so writers are being more direct in their scripts. But I’m wondering, do you think it’s more effective to be restrained and quieter when using a children’s series as medium for these discussions?

Yeah, I mean I kind of…we always were really about the story. And also, I would say that we were very free in that time at Nickelodeon to just do whatever stories we wanted to do. The difference between doing that and a curriculum show like Dinosaur Train where you’re going to teach science is that we literally didn’t have to teach anything: it was more about entertainment. So that meant that our messaging was more subtle because we were just concentrating on telling a story.

That’s definitely true. Themes can come naturally when you have a well thought-out story. Now Mr. Bartlett, I know that you are often asked about a potential season six for Hey Arnold! and that you want to do it. For fans of the series, could there be a connection between the sales of the Ultimate Collection and Nick being convinced to green-light season 6?

[laughs] That’s great, yeah, let’s make that connection!

[laughs]

We can tell people “if you only buy the Ultimate Collection, then we we will get a season 6!” [laughs]

It has happened in the past where DVD sales have resulted in a show coming back, like Family Guy.

Yeah no, absolutely. For sure. I’m really thrilled that it’s out there. It’s a perfect Christmas present, and if everybody gets it maybe that will move the series forward.

That’s right, it is coming out in time for Christmas in terms of a potential present for…really everyone. This is a show that has aged so well that you could introduce it to newer generations.

Yeah.

But Mr. Bartlett, once again thank you so much for taking the time out of your day to speak with me. I never thought I would get the chance to talk to the creator of one of my favorite shows!

No, thank you very much. It was great. It was nice talking to you!

Flickering Myth would like to thank Mr. Bartlett for sitting down with us.

The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers look back on life in spandex 25 years later

Everett Collection

Twenty-five years after their superhero series became an instant phenomenon, the original cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers looks back on the iconic franchise with Entertainment Weekly, revealing how they handled overnight stardom, why most of them walked away from the show, and what it was really like wearing that spandex.

It all started in a hotel room. Music producer Haim Saban, now 74, was watching TV while visiting Tokyo in 1984 when he came across the popular Super Sentai franchise.

HAIM SABAN: I was lying in bed, flipping through the three channels that were basically showing Japanese game shows. And then this show came on where I saw five kids in spandex battling monsters, and — I might come across as a bit of a child here — I fell in love. I thought it’d be a great opportunity [to create an American version of Super Sentai]. I’d never seen anything like it on TV in Europe or Israel or America. Action scenes are the most expensive to shoot, but you didn’t see their faces in the battle scenes, so I thought, “You can use the [Super Sentai] footage from Japan.” But it took eight years of trying to convince different people. People would tell me that I should focus on my music because TV’s not my business, that [the pilot] was embarrassing, so bad. But I didn’t give up. Finally, Margaret Loesch at Fox Kids said she’d give it a try.

Thus began a casting search for “teenagers with attitude” — and martial-arts skills. Soon Saban had his team of superheroes who would play the Rangers when out of their helmets and voice them when the Japanese battle scenes were used: Red Ranger, Jason (Austin St. John, now 44); Pink Ranger, Kimberly (Amy Jo Johnson, 48); Black Ranger, Zack (Walter Emanuel Jones, 48); Blue Ranger, Billy (David Yost, 49); Green Ranger, Tommy (Jason David Frank, 45); and Yellow Ranger, Trini (Thuy Trang, who died at 27 in 2001 after being involved in a car accident).

AUSTIN ST. JOHN: I wasn’t an actor. I was actually in high school. I taught martial arts on the side, and I’d been teaching a commercial-acting coach who mentioned this audition for Phantoms, [a working title for the show]. I said, “You know, I’m really not interested in acting. I don’t like cameras. I don’t like large groups of people.” Then after about three weeks, he finally bet me about $20 that I wouldn’t be wasting my time. At the time, I had this beat-up car I was driving to high school, and I thought, “I could use $20.”

DAVID YOST: I originally auditioned for the role of Victor, which was the [original name for the] Red Ranger. I made it through three auditions, but I could tell that the producers were leaning in a different direction. I begged them to let me read for the role of Billy, and they told me no. They didn’t think that I fit the way that Billy was supposed to be. But I went in the bathroom and wet my hair down and borrowed somebody’s glasses and shirt and buttoned it crooked and came back and said, “Please let me read for Billy.”

WALTER EMANUEL JONES: It was the first audition my agent was going to send me on but I was headed to Florida to do Star Search, so I had to miss it. I ended up losing my voice so I couldn’t sing with my group so I went for nothing! But a few days after I got back my agent called and said they still wanted to see me. In the room they asked if I could show them some gymnastics so I do a backflip, I land it, hit a karate stance. And they’re like, “That’s awesome. So can you come back again tomorrow?”

ST. JOHN: When I met up with Walter and Amy and David and Audri [Dubois], who was the Yellow Ranger for the pilot, we started meeting outside of the auditions. [Trang and Frank were cast later.] We’d go across the street to a Bob’s Big Boy and rehearse together. We made it a point to get to know each other and hang out outside of the auditions to really build that chemistry. They were also looking at a taller group [of actors] and a shorter group; we were the medium-sized group, and, you know, we all just kind of jelled.

JASON DAVID FRANK: I wanted to get into acting so I went to an agent and they said, “You’ve got a great look, you’re a great martial artist, but in order to book a role you have to cut your hair, lose your earrings, and all.” I’d had my ponytail for forever — every black belt I knew had a ponytail. But I was like, “Ugh, okay.” So I cut my hair and took out the earrings and went back and they said they were too busy to see me. I said, “I cut my hair!” He just kind of looked around, and said, “Hey man, look, I can’t represent you, but here.” And he handed me a piece of paper with info about Phantoms. At the callback, it was me and a bunch of girls and they asked if I would pair with a girl and teach her a routine. I was confused and thought I’d lost the part and they just wanted me to teach. Out of everyone, I actually picked Thuy. It was meant to be.

Once cast, the pilot proved to be quite the experience.

ST. JOHN: My first day of filming was at this bowling alley, and I think it was on Ventura Blvd. Walter, he had to teach me some critical things about acting. Little details, like, “Austin, can you remember your lines?” “You should probably be facing the camera.” I was like, “Oooh, yeah! Yeah, that makes sense.” My instinct was always to turn away from cameras, you know? My learning curve was straight up.

JONES: Our original Trini, [played by Dubois,] was more of a tomboy than [Trang’s Trini]. Kimberly was very girly, valley girl but Audrey was very much like a tomboy and super tough, which was cool but it was a different energy. It made us a little more aggressive, because the boys were already aggressive and she was also aggressive.

ST. JOHN: The original pilot was pretty violent. I fought the biggest bully and I had kick after kick after kick right across his face. But Fox kicked back the first pilot. They were like, “This is way too violent.” If you look at that pilot now, you see my feet go up, but you never see it make contact with his head. They cut all that out. So obviously, there was mass debating going on, and then it was reworked.

RELATED VIDEO: The original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers pilot, "Day Of The Dumpster":

After shooting the pilot, the cast and Fox network affiliates were doubtful about the show’s potential.

AMY JO JOHNSON: It was my first acting job, and I remember showing the pilot at my house with a bunch of friends, and at the end we all just looked at each other and they were like, “Well, you know, your next job will be bigger or better.”

JONES: I remember in the original pilot, when we’d say, “It’s morphin’ time!” our faces would morph into our dinosaur, and that was kind of strange. I thought it was kind of cheesy. But we’d never seen the Japanese footage, so it was really cool to see the battles and the Rangers in their Zords.

SABAN: The affiliates went all the way to [Fox chairman] Rupert Murdoch, complaining, “What is this [Margaret Loesch] thinking, wanting to put this piece of nothing on the air?” But she was very courageous…to a point. She decided to air it early in the morning, in the summer, basically in the graveyard time slot.

But soon after launching on Aug. 28, 1993, it was the highest-rated kids’ show on broadcast television — but the cast was too busy filming their 60-episode first season to celebrate.

ST. JOHN: We filmed so hard and fast for the first year. Monday through Friday, filming, it was dark when we got in, it was dark when we left. Saturday was when we were called to do voiceover. Sunday I was usually so tired, all I would do was hit the gym to train, and then go back home and relax. I didn’t go out for almost a year. We finally got a week off for Christmas at the end of the year. I slept for a day to try and get my energy back. At 19 you shouldn’t have to do that, you know?

JONES: I had phone calls from all kinds of people and family and friends I didn’t even know that I had. I’d get home and there’d be 45 messages on my answering machine and I was tired, so I didn’t have a chance to listen to all of them. I’d get home and just fall asleep so I didn’t return the phone calls and some people thought I’d changed. “Walter’s changed.” But I was just really busy.

JOHNSON: I had to learn a lot because I had never been on a set really before. And we worked long hours, even though we were shooting 15 minutes of the show, we shot a lot of episodes. It was quite a grueling show, but at the same time we were all so young. I look back at that time sort of as my college years, in a way. I really wanted to be a good actor. I would break down the scripts, I would really try to do it up. As an actor, you take your job and you make it as grounded as possible.

JONES: I remember there was this one episode where we had to ride ATVs and they were like, “You have to be careful.” At this point, Jason Frank had joined the show [as Tommy] and he was the wild card. The guy would do crazy stuff, so he comes out and jumps on an ATV and he takes off into the wilderness. He just jumps up and you see him go over a hill and he disappears and me and the other Rangers look at each other like, “Let’s go!” So, we all take off and of course the PAs and everybody’s freaking out that we’re gonna kill ourselves and they wouldn’t have a show.

FRANK: They brought me in [during the 17th episode of the first season]. I was told when I was hired, “Don’t get excited. You’re here for 10 episodes, your character dies off on the show.” I said, “Hey, I’m happy to do one episode.” When I first got to set, the first thing I did was lay out my costume on the chair and took pictures. Then, I saw the mouth [on the helmet] didn’t move. I was like, “Man, I probably don’t even have lines in this episode.” But I did and I just did the best I could, and more opportunities just kept opening for me and eventually, Tommy became the leader.

JONES: In the beginning, I thought it was weird Zach would dance in battle. I was like, “My friends are in danger, why would I dance? It’s like I don’t care?” But eventually, I was able to transform it into something that was more about distraction, so watching the hand but the kick is coming.

ST. JOHN: There was this pretty incredible fight scene out at Vasquez Rocks, and we actually had the stunt guys in wetsuits that they had it bad. It was boiling hot-hot, desert, 100-plus degree heat. One guy went down with heat exhaustion. I don’t know how we didn’t have more. Then, the command center [set] used to be freezing cold. Wearing nothing but spandex, we used to hold each other just to stay warm.

YOST: The suits were sort of like wearing pajamas. The uncomfortable part was the helmet. You can’t breathe, you can’t see, your ears are often getting pinched in the sides of the helmet. But in the end, you look cool, you look like a superhero, so you gotta suck it up and take the good with the bad. Because at the end of the day, you’re a superhero and how could you go wrong being a superhero?

The Power Rangers. Credit: Everett Collection

Then came their first chances to experience their fame. Adjusting stardom was difficult for the young cast.

ST. JOHN: Walter and several of the stunt guys, we moved into the same house to try and save money because we weren’t paid well at all. It was a nonunion show. I decided to go to the mall across the street to get some new jeans and — I’d never been on TV before, I didn’t know what to expect — I didn’t make it five steps inside the doors when the first scream ripped out. From there, I was mobbed. My shirt was torn off of my back, one of my pockets was torn off the back of my jeans, I lost one shoe, I lost my sunglasses, I lost my hat, and I had some claw marks on my back and my arms from people pawing at me. Security finally got me out of there.

YOST: We filmed almost the entire first season before it even started airing, so we really had no gauge as to what was going to happen or what was going on. We were supposed to do one little, tiny show at Universal Studios [theme park] for, like, 100 people, but we ended up creating a traffic jam for eight miles on the 101 Freeway. Universal Studios had to shut their doors and say, “We can’t take any more people today.”

JOHNSON: I found it incredibly overwhelming. I remember going to Hawaii and getting off the plane to do an appearance there. They’d announced that we were coming on the radio, and 10,000 people showed up at the airport and they didn’t have any security. It scared the heck out of me.

FRANK: That was the point, for me, where I had to focus on today and not tomorrow. I still owned [karate class] businesses, I knew that this was just one of those things where it was just something I loved to do, it was a hobby.

Halfway through the show’s second season, after more than 80 episodes, Trang, Jones, and St. John became the first original cast members to leave the series (most of the cast say nonunion pay was a major factor in their departures). But the Power Rangers brand has lived on (the original seasons stream on Netflix), with the show reinventing itself almost 20 times (Saban’s Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel currently airs on Nickelodeon, with Power Rangers Beast Morphers beginning early 2019 on Nick) and the original cast attending fan events around the world.

FRANK: I’ve heard everything: “You were my father figure.” “My parents used to fight all the time, and the only thing that calmed my anxiety down was watching Power Rangers.” “Hey, I named my baby after you.” The show was campy, it was fun, it was colors, it was karate, but at the end of the day it had a ton of heart and was teaching teamwork.

JOHNSON: Fans will tell me about the struggles they had when their mom was dying or they were figuring out they were gay. Their stories have shown me how [Mighty Morphin Power Rangers] really helped a lot of young kids who just needed a place to feel safe. It’s really cool to have been a part of that.

JONES: I’ve got letters from kids that are Caucasian who didn’t grow up around black people and they say, “I started taking hip hop classes because of you; and when I did that, I got diverse friends and they ended up being some of my best friends. It changed my life and I just wanted to say thank you.”

YOST: Because I played the nerdy smart guy, I have fans tell me, “I went into science.” “I’m a computer IT person.” “I’m a doctor.” I have one fan that’s a paleontologist, which I find fascinating, all because of Billy. And now that I’ve come out as a gay person, every day I get messages from gay people around the world that tell me, “Thank you for coming out and sharing your story because your story helped me come out. I’m able to share your story with my family and help them understand what you went through is what I’m going through. And so, thank you.” It’s amazing.

JONES: What I also get a lot from my fans is “Man, I wanted to be a hero like you, and so this is what I did with my life.” All I did was go and work as an actor on this TV show, but I inspired people to be something. It’s very humbling.

ST. JOHN: I just kind of assumed kids would grow out of [MMPR] and it would be forgotten and we’d move on. I did move on. I taught martial arts around the world. I became a firefighter-paramedic. I spent four years in the Middle East for the war. I was gone for 20 years. And then a few years ago, Walter calls me while I’m on the Iraqi–Kuwaiti border and fills me in on these things called comic cons. I remember saying, “What do you mean they come to see you? lt’s been 20-something years.” He goes, “Dude, they grew up. They’re showing it to their children. Their parents who watched it with them come with them. We have three generations of fans now.” It blew my mind.

Kally’s MashUp is inspired by the real-life musical journey of Glee’s executive musical producer, Adam Anders. It follows the adventures of Kally, a young musical prodigy who tries to balance her life as a piano virtuoso and a regular girl when she moves from a small town to the most prestigious music university in the country. Although everyone thinks she was born to be a classical piano player, her true dream and passion is to be a pop star. Kally’s MashUp features original songs composed by Anders, his wife Nikki Anders, and longtime collaborator Peer Astrom. Anders serves as executive producer for the show and oversees all the music featured in the series.

Kally's MashUp stars a very talented cast from Argentina and Mexico, headed by Maia Reficco as Kally Ponce (Mica 6.3.5); Alex Hoyer as Dante Barkin; Sarah Cobo as Gloria Skyler; Mariano Chiesa as Mike Ponce; Betina O’Connell as Carmen Ponce; Marita Ballesteros as Rosario; Emiliano Dionisi as Carlos (Charly) Ponce; Josefina Scaglione as Abrankhousen; Sebastián Holz as Norman Skyler; Francisco Donovan as Félix; Daniel Campomenosi; Sarai Meza as Tina Barkin; Jackie Castañeda as Caridad; Fer Serrano as Lisa Barnes; Tomás Carullo as Kevin; Tupac Larriera as Alex; Daniela Flombaum as Lucy Magliano; José G. Zapiola as Tomás (Tommy) Greco ; Lalo Brito as Andrés (Andy) Guiderman; Milagros Masini as Olivia; Celeste Sanazi as Stefania (Stefi); Camila Mateos as Nicole; Cintia Torres Garcia; Facundo Giordano; Julieta Perez Cieri; Juan Martin Delgado; Carla Guidobono; Maximiliano Morales; Lucas Noacco; Florencia Ortega; Mario Juangorena; Sofia Miramon; and Maximo Espindola as Nando.

Kally's MashUp season one (75×60-minute episodes) debuted on Nickelodeon Latinoamérica in October 2017 and has since been seen by more than 5 million viewers across the Latin American region, achieving the No. 1 position in Mexico among girls aged 7 to 14 years. Following its success, Nickelodeon Latinoamérica recently ordered more new episodes.

A new line of consumer products inspired by the popular series was released earlier this year. "Kally's MashUp: La música: banda sonora original de la serie de TV", a album featuring 18 songs from the hit TV show, was released on Friday 9th March 2018 by Deep Well Records, under exclusive license to Sony Music Entertainment US Latin LLC. The album can be downloaded now at kallysmashupofficial.com. A live stage show is expected to launch during winter 2018. Nickelodeon Latinoamérica recently hosted a contest in which one lucky Kally's MashUp fan won the chance to feature in the season finale of Kally's MashUp 2.

From NaTelinha:

Quero conhecer a Amazônia", apontou Maia. "Imagina se estamos sobrevoando de avião e nos deixam dentro da Amazônia? Seria incrível", destacou Alex. "Ir ao Cristo Redentor, e sentar no ombro dele", disse Lalo, recebendo o apoio de Maia. "Queria fazer parkour, porque sei que praticam muito por aqui", completou o intérprete de Andy.

Jogo rápido - O que mais gostam na novela da Nickelodeon?

Uma música

Maia Reficco – Unísono
Lalo Brito – Baby Be Mine
Alex Hoyer – Happy Birthday To Me

Lugar preferido

Maia Reficco – Quarto da Kally
Lalo Brito – Allegro e Milkshake
Alex Hoyer – Milkshake e Allegro

Um amigo

Maia Reficco – Pablo e Tina
Alex Hoyer – Alex
Lalo Brito – Lucy

Cousins For Life centers on 12-year-old cousins Stuart (Dallas Young) and Ivy (Scarlet Spencer), best friends who come from very different backgrounds, who have to learn to navigate life under one roof with their families.

After Stuart’s mom is deployed overseas, his fun-loving dad Clark (Ishmel Sahid) decides to move the family to Portland to live with his uptight brother Lewis (Ron G.) and his family, which includes Stuart’s confident, socially active cousin Ivy and her younger, overly-curious brother Leaf (Micah Abbey). Now living in a brand new city, Stuart embarks on a variety of endeavors with Ivy that lead to hilarious adventures.

Cousins For Life was filmed at The Burbank Studios in Burbank, California - the same studio facility where Henry Danger is filmed, as where many iconic TV shows have been filmed, including Saved by the Bell and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air - earlier this summer.

Greenlit for an initial 20 episodes, Cousins For Life comes from veteran creators and executive producers Kevin Kopelow and Heath Seifert (Austin & Ally, All That).

It all began with a audience member asking episode host Steve Carell the simple question: “Will you ever reboot The Office?" The host said no, so SNL cast member Kenan Thompson stood up and framed it as more of a suggestion. Carell explained that reprising his role as the lunatic Dunder Mifflin Paper Company manager would be like Thompson returning full-time to the Nickelodeon sitcom Kenan & Kel, on which he starred with Kel Mitchell from 1996 through 2000.

“That would be an honour,” Thompson solemnly replied.

One by one, former Office cast members popped up from their seats in the audience. “I need that money,” said Ellie Kemper, who played secretary Erin Hannon on the show. “Let’s get that money, Steve.” When he declined, the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt actress yelled, “You’re a jerk!”

Ed Helms, who played Dunder Mifflin salesman Andy Bernard, also argued in favour of a reboot. Maybe Carell didn’t understand just how much money it would make them. “You wouldn’t have to do all those sad movies anymore,” Helms said, referring to Carell’s recent roles, such as a panicked father in Beautiful Boy.

Dark Horse Comics Announces 'Avatar: The Last Airbender - Imbalance Part Two'

Dark Horse Comics have announced the second part of their hit three part Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel series, "Imbalance", the official continuation of Airbender from its creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko!

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Imbalance finds Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph dealing with a conflict between benders and non-benders in a booming industrial town. Perhaps the story will explore connective tissue between the end of Avatar and sequel series Legend of Korra, which featured a much more industrial world and began with high tensions between benders and non-benders.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender - Imbalance Part One, set to be released on Tuesday, December 18th, when Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph return to Earthen Fire Industries--the factory owned by Toph's father--Team Avatar finds that the once small town is now booming. Expecting a warm welcome, Aang is surprised when their arrival is met with unimpressed, cold-shouldered spectators. As soon as the team is asked for help at a business council meeting, the reason for the slight becomes clear--a massive bender versus non-bender conflict has gripped the town and is threatening to turn violent.

More Nick:Dark Horse Comics to Expand 'The Legend of Korra' with 'Ruins of the Empire' Graphic Novel Trilogy!

In Avatar: The Last Airbender - Imbalance Part Two, slated to be released on Tuesday, April 16, 2019, Aang and Team Avatar race to resolve rising tensions between benders and non-benders before a town is torn apart! There's something fishy going on in Cranefish Town, and it's up to Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Toph to find out what, before the simmering conflict between benders and non-benders boils over into all-out war. But danger lurks where they least expect it, and uncovering the truth will reveal a threat unlike any they've ever faced--and a fateful choice for Aang he can never unmake! The issue has a SRP of $10.99. (TP; DEC180407; Final Orders Due: Jan 07, 2019)

A release date for the concluding part of the story, Avatar: The Last Airbender - Imbalance Part Three is still to be announced.

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Imbalance features the debut of writer Faith Erin Hicks (The Nameless City) and artist Peter Wartman, who are taking the reins from longtime Avatar comics writer Gene Luen Yang (American Born Chinese). Like Yang, Hicks and Wartman will be working in collaboration with Avatar: The Last Airbender creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko.

Avatar: The Last Airbender — Imbalance this is the ultimate continuation of Nickelodeon's beloved Avatar franchise!

Hasbro Sees "Significant Opportunity for Power Rangers"

Hasbro’s Simon Waters reveals what the future holds for the iconic Power Rangers brand.

Launched by creator Haim Saban in 1993, Power Rangers is one of the most-watched children’s television programmes in the US and remains one of the longest running live action kids’ series in television history. The series and subsequent movies, including 2017’s feature film with Lionsgate, follows the adventures of a group of ordinary teens who morph into superheroes to save the world from evil.

The TV show now airs in more than 150 markets around the world and is translated into numerous languages. In January, Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel– the 25th season – premiered on Nickelodeon in the US and began debuting across UK/EMEA in April. The show's 26th season, Power Rangers Beast Morphers, is set to debut on Nickelodeon USA in early 2019.

In February 2018, Hasbro announced that it had entered into a licensing agreement with Saban to become the master toy licensee for Power Rangers effective April 1, 2019, but the deal quickly evolved as Simon Waters, senior vice president and general manager of the Power Rangers franchise explains to Licensing Source: “Shortly after entering into our licensing arrangement, it became clear that now was the time to begin investing in unlocking Power Rangers’ full potential.

“We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire brand blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint.”

Haim Saban will continue in a consulting role as Hasbro recognises how important it is to honour the brand’s heritage. “It’s a fine line to walk, as we must continue to preserve the elements that remain at the heart of the brand and have found an evergreen resonance, while not missing opportunities to grow in exciting new directions,” says Simon.

The reaction to the Power Rangers acquisition has been overwhelmingly positive from the public, press and fan community. “Hasbro couldn’t be more proud to take on such an incredible and iconic brand,” says Simon.

“We saw an amazing reaction from fans at Power Morphicon [the biennial convention in Los Angeles over August 17-19] and were excited to see such tremendous fan engagement. It was a great experience at the convention, and we feel that we left fans with a huge sense of anticipation of all the great things yet to come from Hasbro.”

During Power Morphicon, Hasbro revealed its first-ever Power Rangers product – the Lightning Collection White Ranger Figure (pictured above), a highly-articulated 6-inch figure with high-level detailing and design. The figure, inspired by Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers season 2, will be released in spring 2019.

“In spring 2019, we will also release the first set of toys inspired by the 26th season – Power Rangers Beast Morphers,” says Simon. “Hasbro’s Power Rangers line will feature a range of products designed for fans of all ages, including preschool to adult collectors. Stay tuned for more updates.”

While Hasbro is taking time to assess where the gaps and white spaces are in the licensing programme, Simon sees a multitude of opportunities across a wide range in categories – both in physical product and live branded experiences; particularly in Latin America.

“For years, we have seen the Latin American audience respond favourably to our content. As part of the Hasbro family, the Power Rangers franchise is poised to make significant inroads into this market, leading with the most innovative toy line in the history of the franchise to pave the way for multi-category lifestyle statements that enable consumers to truly live the brand.”

Looking to 2019 and beyond, Hasbro has some big plans to deliver ‘always on’ content. “We definitely have an eye towards the future with big plans to deliver targeted content, in various formats for each of our key segments, as well as tentpole moments designed to have a multi-generational appeal. We know that our audience is consuming and creating content across a myriad of platforms and we intend to emPOWER their consumption of exciting new content,” says Simon.

25 years of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

It’s been a big year for Power Rangers as it celebrates 25 years since the launch of the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series in 1993.

On August 28 (the same day the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series premiered in 1993), Nickelodeon USA premiered a special Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel episode to celebrate the anniversary. The episode included iconic Rangers from the past, including the original Green and White Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Hasbro and National Day Calendar also proclaimed August 28th as National Power Rangers Day.

Coinciding with the August anniversary, the Build-A-Bear Workshop revealed a brand new 25th anniversary branded Green Ranger bear that sports the 25th anniversary logo (pictured above).

And Shout! Factory commemorated the 25th anniversary with a collector’s edition steelbook complete series box set, which gathers all 155 original episodes out on Blu-ray for the very first time ever.

Kel Mitchell Talks Competing Against Kenan Thompson in Nickelodeon's 'Double Dare'

Who loves getting slimed? Kel Mitchell does — otherwise, he probably wouldn't be going up against former All That castmate Kenan Thompson in a special, one-hour episode of Nickelodeon's recently-rebooted game show, Double Dare, airing November 21. Could it possibly get more '90s than that?

The hilarious duo (who are both fathers now!) were known for their ridiculous sketches on comedy series All That, their own spinoff Kenan & Kel, and of course Good Burger, the sketch-turned-film that cemented the line Mitchell hears the most to this day: "Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?"

Mitchell sat down with TV Insider to chat about the upcoming special, his other Nick show Game Shakers, and his longtime friendship with Thompson, who received his first Emmy nod this year for his work on Saturday Night Live.

"We were like two big kids," Mitchell previews of his time on Dare's obstacle course with Thompson. "They had to kick us off."

"It's a huge family tradition to watch the event," Jonas told All the Moms.

Paw Patrol Chase is pawing its way into the 2018 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Jonas, 31, and wife, Danielle, 32, are parents to Elena Rose, 4, and Valentina Angelina, 2. This will be the first time they all have a front seat for the parade and they're all about Paw Patrol.

"Oh my gosh — we went on a family vacation and I took two DVDs for them and that's all Valentina kept yelling: Paw Patrol, Paw Patrol, Paw Patrol!"

Jonas said he likes the PAW Patrol theme song. (They didn't make him say that.)

Unlike other parents who hate on the Nickelodeon theme song, like actor Ryan Reynolds [Nickelodeon's Fifteen, Are You Afraid of the Dark?], who told it to "get outta my head" on Instagram. Jonas said as a musician he "appreciates" a catchy tune.

Music will always be in his life, but for now Jonas is living in New Jersey and working as a contractor and raising his daughters.

Nickelodeon has been a participant since 1997 and is expanding its relationship this year to include three balloons and two floats—one of its largest representations, according to Charlotte Castillo, senior VP of global franchise planning. The media company will have a team manning the Nickelodeon and Nickelodeon Jr. social media feeds during the event.

"The parade is an additional touchpoint," says Castillo. "Whether on TV or in real life, to see your favorite character larger than life floating down in the parade, it adds another level of connection and engagement."
