'The Loud House' Nominated For GLAAD's Inaugural "Outstanding Kids & Family Programming" Award In The 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards

GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organization, has announced the very exciting news that Nickelodeon's hit animated series The Loud House has been nominated for a award in the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, which recognizes and honors media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community and the issues that affect their lives!

The Loud House has been nominated for GLAAD's inaugural "Outstanding Kids & Family Programming" award in the 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, for featuring accurate and inclusive representations of the gay and bisexual communities. Nickelodeon's hit series currently features four LGBTQ+ characters: Lincoln's best friend, Clyde McBride has two fathers, Harold and Howard; and Lincoln's sister, Luna, and her crush, Sam, are bi-sexual.

This is the first year GLAAD are honoring children and family shows featuring inclusive programming with a specific category. However, this is the second year in a row that The Loud House has been nominated for a GLAAD award, having been nominated for "Outstanding Individual Episode (in a series without a regular LGBTQ character)" award for the episode "Attention Deficit" in the 28th Annual GLAAD Media Awards.

Rounding out GLAAD's first ever "Outstanding Kids & Family Programming" category are: Andi Mack (Disney Channel); Danger & Eggs for the episode "Chosen Family" (Amazon); Doc McStuffins for the episode "The Emergency Plan" (Disney Channel); and Steven Universe (Cartoon Network).

Although the networks first-ever married same-sex couple, Harold and Howard McBride aren't the networks first same-sex couple. In 2014, the series finale of Nickelodeon's hit original animated series The Legend of Korra ended with Korra and Asami, two of the shows female characters, embarking on a romantic relationship, with fans endearingly calling the couple 'Korrasami'.

On Wednesday 14th February 2018, Kevin Sullivan, a staff writer on The Loud House, and a scriptwriter on The Loud House episode "Attention Deficit", will be taking part in the "Creating LGBTQ-inclusive Content for Kids" panel at the Kidscreen Summit 2018. Kids and family entertainment is arguably the very last part of the entertainment business to include positive portrayals of LGBTQ characters. But the last few years have marked a significant shift, with shows like The Loud House, Doc McStuffins, Steven Universe, and Andi Mack breaking new ground in the depiction of LGBTQ characters and issues. This session will thoughtfully address why this shift is happening, how creators and networks are approaching LGBTQ inclusion, and most importantly, how to keep up the momentum. Kevin will be joined on the panel by Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO, GLAAD; Terri Minsky, Creator, Disney; Chris Nee, Executive Producer of Doc McStuffins and Vampirina, Disney Junior; and Linda Simensky, Vice President (VP), Children’s Programming, PBS KIDS.

"What people see in the media has a powerful impact on how they treat others and the GLAAD Media Awards raise the bar for media to tell LGBTQ stories that accelerate acceptance," said GLAAD President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sarah Kate Ellis. "At a time when anti-LGBTQ policies and harassment are on the rise, it is imperative that Hollywood and news media tell more LGBTQ stories that reflect the community’s rich diversity – and build understanding that brings all communities closer together. This year's nominees showcase stories that span races, genres, ages, and geographies, challenge misconceptions, and broaden understanding and acceptance of LGBTQ people across the globe."

GLAAD announced their 125 nominees in 21 English-language categories and 16 nominees in 4 Spanish-language categories today, Friday 19th January 2018, live from the Sundance Film Festival

The GLAAD Media Awards honor media for their fair, accurate, and inclusive representations of the LGBTQ community and the issues that affect their lives. The GLAAD Media Awards also fund GLAAD's work to accelerate acceptance of the LGBTQ community. The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in Los Angeles on Thursday 12th April 2018 at The Beverly Hilton, and in New York on Saturday 5th May 2018 at the New York Hilton Midtown.

A full list of 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards nominees can be found here on glaad.org. A tip sheet with additional facts and figures about this year's 141 nominees is available at: www.glaad.org/mediaawards/factsandfigures. The 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards nominees were published, released, or broadcast between January 1 and December 31, 2017.

Special Honorees for the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles on Thursday 12th April 2018, and in New York City on Saturday 5th May 2018 will be announced in coming weeks.

The 29th Annual GLAAD Media Awards corporate partners include Presenting Partners Delta Air Lines, Ketel One Vodka, and Wells Fargo. GLAAD is also grateful to: Official Partner Bud Light; Platinum Partners Allstate Insurance Company, MetLife, Omnicom Group, Southwest Airlines, and Turner. For a full list of corporate partners and information on how to become a corporate partner, purchase tickets, and place a tribute in the tribute book, please visit www.glaad.org/mediaawards.

Inside the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, the Network’s R&D Unit

Nickelodeon is celebrating the launch of the third season of its hit animated comedy series The Loud House today (Friday 19th January 2018) with a 360-degree video that lets viewers explore the madness of the Loud family household literally from all angles!

CREDIT: Janko Roettgers / Variety

The video has been produced by Nickelodeon’s Entertainment Lab, a small research and development unit that spent the past year quietly working away on internal projects. As it is getting ready to release more of its work to the public, Variety recently got a aweslime behind-the-scenes look at Lab, its stage-sized VR setups, hacked arcade machines and crazy virtual reality slime fights.

Nickelodeon SVP Chris Young began exploring new technologies for the network in 2014. In May of last year, Nickelodeon made his mission official, and created the Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab, a group of six staffers looking to explore virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and everything in between. “The Lab is really tasked with a long-term view of where entertainment is headed,” Young explained as he recently gave Variety a tour of their facilities, housed on the mezzanine level of the original building at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California.

That tour began with a look at a stage customized for developing location-based VR experiences that can be used by multiple players at the same time. Much like other location-based VR setups, the Lab has also been using dozens of tracking cameras and special computer backpacks that make it possible to freely walk around within the experience while wearing a VR headset. Young explained that he wanted to go beyond the constraints of a typical consumer-grade VR setup. “I was interested in doing something at much bigger scale,” he said.

In a corner, a desk was littered with cables, soldering irons and random parts. Young explained that he wasn’t happy with the fact that your typical VR setup doesn’t know whether you raise your hand, or step forward with one foot. “We really want to have full body presence.” And since commercial body tracking solutions are still evolving, Young decided to build his own tracking devices, with a little help from a 3D printer.

The Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab is developing its own tracking hardware for location-based VR. CREDIT: Janko Roettgers / Variety

The Nickelodeon Entertainment Lab has done extensive work in VR, much of which will never be seen outside of the walls of the network’s facility. This included Sage, an animated VR short film from Nickelodeon supervising director Dan Krall about an elf in a magical forest.

Lab employees also experimented with alternative controllers for VR to get beyond the awkward task of having to teach players the use of buttons for a particular game. “Kids know super-soakers, and they know what a banana is,” quipped Young — so why not use these everyday items for VR games? At one point, Young even created a life-sized model of his office in virtual reality, which allowed him to use his real office as a playground for motion capture and other experiments.

But not all of the Lab’s work is focused on VR. One of the team’s offices is being used for real-time video animation for Facebook Live streams. With the help of some X-Keys Midi controllers, Lab employees were able to animate cartoon characters in real-time, making them frown, jump and wave just by hitting a few buttons. Their mouth movements were automatically synchronized to live speech input Adobe’s Character Animator app, which works a bit like the software powering Apple’s Animoji. “I call these guys cartoon DJs,” joked Young about employees using the hardware.

The Lab’s most famous project thus far has been Slime Zone, a social multiplayer VR experience that was first shown at Vidcon last year. In it, players find themselves in a colorful animated world where they can shoot green slime at each other, play ping-pong or basketball, or just watch videos together, chat and hang out. Every now and then, Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and even Korra make an appearance.

Imagine an 8-year-old’s birthday party where everyone had way too much cake and soda and is bouncing off the walls, but in VR, and you get the picture. It’s a lot of fun, and a way for the Lab to play with a bunch of different modalities around social VR. Team members also wanted to try to bridge the gap between the new medium and other screens, and went full circle on video gaming by porting Slime Zone to an arcade machine.

There’s no word yet if and when the Slime Zone will ever turn into a commercial product, but you shouldn’t be too surprised to see more of the Lab’s work actually reach consumers. For instance, Lab employees have been working on augmented reality characters based on Apple’s ARKit that may get released in the near future.

And there will likely also be more 360 videos, since the Loud House project was used to set up an internal workflow. “The process we set up to handle the 360 output allowed the animators to approach the production in the same way they create the TV show,” said Young. “With this process, it was a seamless step from storyboards, to animation, to final 360 render.”

Some Nickelodeon Entertainment Labs projects may seem silly, but listen to Young, and you start to understand that there’s more to it. Ultimately, he argued, it’s all about a shift from traditional production methods to tools that can be used and manipulated live. “The future is real-time,” he said. “Working real-time is fundamental to this technology.”

Young and his team have for instance been testing the quality level of game engines, which are traditionally used for real-time video-game graphics rendering. As part of that work, the Lab also produced an animated short film rendered entirely in a game engine. The goal was not only to show that the results look comparable to traditional animation, but also that the assets could be changed on the fly, and even adapted to new mediums. After producing the short film in 2D, the team put the same assets into VR. “And then we took the VR experience, and put it onto HoloLens,” recalled Young.

Ultimately, Nickelodeon could start to use game engines more widely to produce animated shows, Young predicted: “As a company, we are very interested in it.”

Jace Norman Opens Up About Henry Danger, Nickelodeon and Dealing with Hordes of Young Fans

$

Jace Norman, who plays Kid Danger on Nickelodeon's hit superhero-themed comedy series Henry Danger, says though he thought it was weird to go from total obscurity to overnight TV star, it’s been weirder still to see himself as a cartoon character on his new animated series.

Of The Adventures of Kid Danger, which premieres Friday, January 19, Norman told PEOPLE that it was beyond crazy to see himself as a cartoon. “It’s so trippy,” he says. “But I grew up watching Nickelodeon cartoons, so to be a Nickelodeon cartoon? It’s insane.”

Norman, 17, has played the title role on Henry Danger for four years — and says he had no idea it would ever be so popular with kids.

“[Creator] Dan Schneider kept saying, ‘This might be one of my favorite shows,’ but I was just so nervous because there’s this legacy of amazing Nickelodeon shows from over the years, and I didn’t know if I could hold up to those,” he says.

Jace Norman | Gary Gershoff/WireImage

Now, after four seasons, he assumes he’ll eventually age out of the part of a teen superhero. “I think we might do another season, but I don’t know yet. I’m almost 18 now,” he says, adding that he got the part when he was 12. “I’ve done my whole high school years on the show, which is crazy. Sometimes people will meet me and be like, ‘I thought you were younger!’ because the show airs later. I’m always a year older than what they’re seeing.'”

While he says he’ll eventually go on to other projects, Henry Danger and Nickelodeon will always hold a special place in his heart.

“I can remember my childhood and how much those shows resonated with me when I was a kid, so the fact that I’ll be a part of so many kid’s childhood memories blows my mind,” Norman says. “That’s the most rewarding part of it. But I think I’ve tackled the whole kids acting thing.”

In the meantime, the actor and entrepreneur also started his own company, Creator Edge Media, which connects social media stars with the brands that want to work with them.

“It’s only a problem if you’re having a bad day,” he says about constantly getting stopped by fans who want to take a selfies. “For the most part, it’s great to meet people that enjoy the show. It makes all of the heard work worth it.”

The Adventures of Kid Danger premieres Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon USA. Visit Nick.com, Facebook, Instagram and the Nick App to learn more about The Adventures of Kid Danger.

'Henry Danger' Star Jace Norman Reacts to Seeing Himself as a Cartoon

Also, from TODAY.com:

'Henry Danger' star Jace Norman opens up about bullying: 'I felt hopeless'

Those of us who mock millennials for being slackers have never met Jace Norman, 17.

He’s the star of Nick’s hit series “Henry Danger,” playing a crime-fighting sidekick. The animated spin-off series, called "The Adventures of Kid Danger," premieres Friday. Norman co-started the influencer marketing agency Creator Edge Media, aimed at his generation. Oh, and he’s teaming up with the United Nations to push for bullying awareness.

And he used his platform at the Kids' Choice Awards 2017, after winning favorite actor, to encourage his fans to listen to their inner voices. “Have the courage to follow your heart and your intuition,” he said.

Norman's drive isn't non-stop, though.

“I’m not always energetic. I don’t feel motivated all the time. I’m very driven to do something bigger than myself. That’s my goal,” Norman says while visiting Megyn Kelly TODAY.

His success, you could say, is hard-won. Norman didn’t exactly fit in at his California middle school. He knew college wasn’t in his future, and he had to forge his own path, one that didn't anything to do with SAT scores and university applications.

“I had dyslexia and I was an actor. I got bad grades. Everyone was telling me I wasn’t going to be successful,” he says. “I felt hopeless. Hearing all those voices, you start to listen to them. I wanted to showcase that there’s another path.”

His parents were supportive, which was key, and never questioned his choice to forgo college in favor of being on-screen. “My dad had dyslexia so he found his own path as well and that inspired me to keep going,” says Norman.

As so often happens, Norman now has the last laugh — not that he’s reveling in his success. All the people who gave him a hard time, says Norman, “hit me back now on Instagram and stuff. It paid off for me. The voice you hear inside is the right voice. Believe, deep down, that that is the right path for you.

Up the Tube! Toonzone Interviews Jace Norman on “The Adventures of Kid Danger”

Jace Norman is best known to fans as Henry Hart, a.k.a. Kid Danger, the sidekick to the bumbling Captain Man on Nickelodeon’s hit superhero comedy series Henry Danger. He launched his acting career in 2012 with an appearance on the Disney Channel series Jessie, and has also been in several Nickelodeon movies (Splitting Adam, Rufus, and the sequel Rufus 2). He has also appeared as Kid Danger in the Henry Danger crossover episodes with The Thundermans and Game Shakers.

However, his latest challenge isn’t from a new supervillain, but the voiceover booth, since he is reprising his role as Kid Danger for the animated series spin-off The Adventures of Kid Danger. He’s also done some guest voiceover work on The Loud House and was the lead in the animated feature Spark. We were able to catch up with Jace Norman while he was in New York City to talk about The Adventures of Kid Danger, as well as some of the other work he’s doing apart from his acting career.

TOONZONE NEWS: I noticed that you’ve been doing some more voiceover work lately. Is that something that you’re actively seeking out or is it just sort of happening?

JACE NORMAN: Yeah! Voiceover is a different side of acting, so I’m definitely exploring that. I think that it’s actually harder because you can only use your voice. So it’s definitely something I’m working on.

TOONZONE NEWS: How has it been making the jump from live-action to animation?

JACE NORMAN: It’s very different, because you’re just in a studio and it’s just a mike. You’re just talking and you have to try to act the whole time while you’re talking. And then you trust the animators to do the work for you. So hopefully they make it look good.

TOONZONE NEWS: Do you guys get to do ensemble records with everybody together, or has it always been the solo sessions in the studio?

JACE NORMAN: Yeah, we can record together if the schedules line up. We’ve actually been shooting Henry Danger and doing the animated series at the same time, so it’s been kind of complicated. But if we can, we like being in the same room so we can do our little dance with each other.

TOONZONE NEWS: And you’ve been working with everybody on the show for so long that getting that chemistry is part of the show.

JACE NORMAN: Yeah, yeah, it’s actually pretty important.

TOONZONE NEWS: So when you have to record solo, what kinds of adjustments do you make as an actor to manage that?

JACE NORMAN: it’s hard, because you’re acting with yourself and you’re acting to a wall, which is not always the best. But like I said, it’s definitely a new challenge for me. I’m not a professional voice actor, and they’ve had some legends come in who have done a bunch of voices. Like the one person who can do 15 different characters, or who have done a bunch of Family Guy episodes and stuff.

TOONZONE NEWS: It seems like it’s a relatively natural thing to do superhero shows in animation…

JACE NORMAN: And on Nickelodeon as well. They have a great animated team down there. Just from the history, they’ve got some people there who have been at it for a while. There’s people who worked on Hey Arnold! and stuff like that, and SpongeBob. It’s really kind of surreal to even be in the same kind of area.

TOONZONE NEWS: Do you find that there’s a shift in the material that you get to work with in animation than you do in live-action?

JACE NORMAN: Yeah, it’s much weirder. They do much weirder stuff animated than they do on live-action. Because they’re able to. It’s just so much weirder, which is awesome, but I think fans are actually going to like how much more weird it is. Because it’s not the same thing. It’s like a different version in a way.

TOONZONE NEWS: I know we did a clip last year that had a popcorn monster in a movie theater…

JACE NORMAN: Yeah! Nuts. It was nuts.

TOONZONE NEWS: I was thinking, “They wouldn’t do that on the show.”

JACE NORMAN: No, they wouldn’t. And there’s like an invisible motorcycle. All kinds of crazy stuff.

TOONZONE NEWS: Do you find that that kind of stuff changes your energy as the character?

JACE NORMAN: I think yeah, it’s much higher energy. It’s much more cartoony, so there’s definitely a change. We’re also expanding the world more, so that kind of expands the characters and how they would react to situations and stuff. We have the superhero Man Cave on the show, and we’re seeing different parts of that in the animated series that we haven’t even seen before. We’re discovering these new places…technically, it’s canon to the live-action, so we’re kind of discovering new parts of the universe that we didn’t know about.

TOONZONE NEWS: In theory, it’s always been there, but now you’re getting to see it.

JACE NORMAN: Exactly. We didn’t know it was there, but it’s always been there and it always will be there.

TOONZONE NEWS: One thing that you’ve said about the show is about how the public thinks of the superheroes and they’re here to save the day, but in reality they’re the most dysfunctional people who are barely able to keep it together. Do you find a parallel to that in the industry?

JACE NORMAN: Totally. There’s always this image of “Everything’s fine, everything’s perfect, everything’s all good” but it’s totally not that. It’s a mess behind the scenes at the end of the day, and you’re lucky if you’ve got a solid base around you, which I do. And I’m lucky to have the people that I have at Nickelodeon because they help to keep me sane. One of my favorite shows that I’ve been watching lately is The Office, and I love how those characters are so awkward together. So I’ve really tried to make the relationship between a man and a kid just be the most awkward interaction ever. Me and Cooper [Barnes, Captain Man on the show] try so hard to make it fun. And at the end of the day, we’re having fun, so I think that’s why kids like it. Because they can see us having fun on set.

TOONZONE NEWS: The series started in 2014, so I’m going to guess you were 12 or 13 when you started working on it.

JACE NORMAN: I was 13. I was 13 when we first shot the pilot, now I’m 17. Long journey.

TOONZONE NEWS: People change a lot between 13 to 17…

JACE NORMAN: Definitely.

TOONZONE NEWS: How do you feel the changes in yourself and as an actor have ended up reflecting on the show?

JACE NORMAN: I think in the business, you have to grow up really fast because you’re working with adults and you’ve got a lot of pressure on you. It’s a hard…or at least I don’t know anything different, but it was hard for me personally to grow up in this kind of crazy industry and crazy time, but it was definitely worth it for all the experiences and learning things that I’ve had.

Jace Norman and Riele Downs as Henry Hart/Kid Danger and Charlotte

TOONZONE NEWS: Do you find you’re able to watch your old work?

JACE NORMAN: No. I hate it! (Laughter) I can’t watch it at all. I mean, it’s like…I don’t know, I can’t watch it personally. It’s like looking at your old yearbook picture, except worse.

TOONZONE NEWS: And everyone else is also watching it too…

JACE NORMAN: Except that everyone else is looking at it…and it’s like, you’re awful. (Laughs)

TOONZONE NEWS: I was reading up on your work with Creator Edge Media, and so I definitely wanted to talk to you about that. What’s your elevator pitch to people to explain what it is.

JACE NORMAN: Sure, I would say that we connect brands to millions of people using the Internet, using influencers, people with large profiles and large social media followings. We can get their products out there and get their brand awareness out there to millions of people very quickly. I feel like it’s a little bit of a transition period from television to this new media thing, whatever you want to call it, and I feel like we’re really in the forefront of creating advertising around that.

TOONZONE NEWS: When did that actually fire up?

JACE NORMAN: Six months ago. The idea came to me probably a year ago. but it’s a lot of work. That was probably the craziest, when I was doing Henry Danger and that. Starting a company, as I’m sure a lot of people know, is not easy. At all. So for me, the hardest thing about that was just staying mentally sane while trying to do all of that.

TOONZONE NEWS: Was there something in your own personal experience that drove your decision to start the company?

JACE NORMAN: It was just that I’ve always felt like I wanted to do something a little bit bigger than myself, so this felt like a step in the right direction. So that’s where this is heading, and I have kind of been in the entertainment industry, and you have a pulse on everything, so that was the seed of that.

TOONZONE NEWS: Hollywood has a lot of child actors who did not make the jump to successful careers. Some of them came to pretty bad ends. Do you think about that as part of your own career or as part of your own work as part of Creator Edge Media? Because a lot of the influencers skew VERY young. I’m amazed that teenagers are doing nowadays.

JACE NORMAN: I understand where you’re going, and yeah I’m glad you brought that up. Being in the middle of it, I can give you a bit of firsthand info…it’s a crazy industry to be in. It’s a crazy environment. You kind of feed off your environment, so when you have all these egos and all these people trying to one-up each other, it gets kind of nasty, so I think that that’s where a lot of people who don’t have the best base or family or whatever…I don’t know, maybe they already have some kind of thing that they’ve got to prove. It really can mess people up. So my main goal, to answer your question about the transition, I’m not necessarily worried about it. I’m more thinking of it from a big picture standpoint. If I can keep myself good and keep myself sane and keep myself mentally in check, because it’s very hard in this industry. Especially when you see these people…and I don’t necessarily blame them. It’s more like the environment. I think people like to target the people who go off the rails and then they’re like, “Look at this guy! What the hell!” It’s really that the people around them are trying to use them, and that creates a lot of pressure so they resort to doing things that relieve that pressure or they go off the rails.

TOONZONE NEWS: I think also in a lot of ways, the modern media landscape makes it better and worse. You can get your side out there, but you’re under a microscope perpetually.

JACE NORMAN: Totally. And the amount of information is being distributed and that people have is nuts. I try to stay off it as much as I can because I’ve noticed that I think better. I think more for myself when I’m not on my phone. You’re forced out of your own thoughts and into other people’s. It just gets overwhelming. And everybody is just lashing out in weird ways to people. It’s a toxic place.

TOONZONE NEWS: What would you say is the strangest way your role on Henry Danger has popped up in real life?

JACE NORMAN: I think it was when my sister had a friend who’s teaching in Africa, they’re out in the middle of nowhere, and those kids watch the show and they want to make a video. You’re so caught up in your own bubble that you never realize that it gets out there. It just kind of blows my mind that someone from such a completely different universe can still watch the show and like it. That’s what really gets to me.

TOONZONE NEWS: I’m guessing you can’t talk too much about the show itself just yet, but can you talk about what really excites you about the work coming up with the show and the animated series, or the movie? Or anything else you’re working on?

JACE NORMAN: The movie is potential…it’s in the works.

TOONZONE NEWS: Ah, OK.

JACE NORMAN: For me, what’s most exciting about that is that I love the core of Henry Danger and I love what we’ve created in the live-action, and to be able to spread out is just a great opportunity for us to do other things. So that’s what I hope comes across in the animated and hopefully the movie. And there’s a lot of stuff is in the works and I don’t know that I can talk about it. But stay tuned.

Former resident gets animated as Kid Danger

Corrales native Jace Norman has played the role of Kid Danger in the Nickelodeon series, Henry Danger. (Courtesy of Mathieu Young/Nickelodeon)

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Corrales-born Jace Norman is making super-strides in the film industry.

He scored his first role in 2012 on the Disney Channel series, “Jessie.”

Since 2014, the now 17-year-old has held the title role in Nickelodeon’s No. 1 show, “Henry Danger.”

And starting tonight, he’ll reprise his role as a superhero’s young sidekick, Henry Hart/Kid Danger, in Nickelodeon’s new animated series, “The Adventures of Kid Danger.” The show premieres at 7:30 p.m.

Henry Hart, the role played by Norman, is a regular boy who lives in the town of Swellview and is looking for work. He lands a part-time job as Kid Danger, a sidekick to Captain Man, a well-known local superhero.

When hiring him, Captain Man tells Hart not to tell anybody about the job, so the teen attempts to keep his adventures a secret from his best friends as well as his family.

“I like the process of creating each episode,” Norman says. “The cast is amazing and we have fun. Each story is well written and it allows us to tell a complete story.”

Norman was born in Corrales and lived there until the age of 8 when his father, who owned a real estate investment company, retired and the family moved to California.

He says playing the same role in the new show, but as a cartoon character, required some big changes.

“It’s very different,” Norman says. “You have to sell everything in your voice. That’s all you’ve got. You have to trust the animators will do it right. It’s weird to not be able to rely on your body to help tell the story.”

Along with the success of the TV series, a lot of responsibility had landed in Norman’s lap.

He’s become a role model for younger children as part of his show and his community outreach, which he enjoys. But he’s quick to realize that he’s going to make mistakes.

And his popularity is growing with more than 2.5 million Instagram followers, as well as more than 70k followers on Facebook and 176k followers on Twitter.

“I’m still a teenager,” he says. “To have a responsibility to my fans is important to me. But I’m not going to be perfect by any means. I still make mistakes and I try to learn from them.”

Norman makes his way back to Corrales a few times a year to visit relatives.

“It’s always nice to get back to my hometown and just relax,” he says. “I took a few acting classes when I lived there. My brother and I used to make homemade videos in our backyard.”

He posted an Instagram video in May 2017 showing a visit he made to his “old stomping grounds” at Corrales Elementary School. It has 386,000 views and can be found @jacenorman.

“It was crazy to go back,” he says. “A few years ago, I was one of those kids on the playground.”

With one hit series under his belt and a new animated series ready for launch, Norman is excited about his future and doesn’t want to limit himself. So he spends his spare time working on his startup social media marketing company, Creator Edge Media.

“The company lets me branch out,” he says. “I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur like my dad, who had his own business in Corrales before he retired.”

Michael Dante DiMartino on ‘The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars’

Michael Dante DiMartino looks back at recent developments in the Avatar-verse.

Best known for his role as co-creator of the epic Nickelodeon series Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, DiMartino also recently published Warrior Genius, the second book in his Rebel Geniuses trilogy. DiMartino spoke to Hypable about The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars, Dark Horse’s three-volume original graphic novel which officially continues the saga of Korra, Asami and the rest of the cast from the beloved Nickelodeon animated series, plus reveals how his own experiences have impacted his work, and what’s ahead for his further creative pursuits.

How is the [The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars] series going?

It’s three volumes, and I just finished the script for the third volume and finished that little story arc. It’s been a long-gestating project, but it turned out really cool, so I’m really excited.

What can you tell us about the overall arc of the story?

Once people read Volume I they’ll get a better sense, but the villain who emerges out of this story goes through a transformation of sorts, and becomes a bit more powerful and dangerous and scary…. it’s the type of villain that I’ve been wanting to do for a while, and it fits in with what’s going on in Republic City.

Were there any ideas that you were able to incorporate in the comic that you hadn’t in the show? Of course, there’s Korra and Asami’s relationship…

Yeah, that’s probably the biggest one, but it’s more extending out from the show. The biggest challenge of this was that there were too many storylines! It’s the same problem I have with my book. We had all these characters, especially with Avatar, there’s like a million characters, and all these storylines that I needed to deal with.

There’s also a presidential election going on in Republic City. I have to ask, were you at all inspired by current events?

You know, it ends up being somewhat related, I suppose! [laughs] But when I started it, it was well before the election. I think it was before anyone knew who the main candidates were. But I guess Raiko has a little Trump in him sometimes! [laughs]

His wife actually looks a little like Melania…

That’s so funny. I tried to get her in the comic — not Melania! I tried to get Buttercup Raiko in there, but it just didn’t work out. She was one that I couldn’t organically weave into the story.

How much are you working with your Avatar co-creator Bryan Konietzko on Turf Wars?

I basically would pitch him ideas, and we would go back and with developing the stories, and stuff he wanted to see in the books. And he’s also been helping out consulting on the art with [artist] Irene [Koh]. So he’s definitely involved in making sure it feels like the show!

[Turning to Warrior Genius] do you have to get in a different head space to write the villainess of the series?

Nah, I guess that stuff just comes naturally from Avatar and Korra. You’re never doing it from [the villains’] point of view, but you are trying to get into the characters’ heads and figure out where they’re coming from. [Nerezza’s] motivations get much more fleshed out and there’s some of her backstory, and it definitely deepens the characters and the world, and their relationships.

Does being a dad influence the way you work on your stories?

Not so much with this book, but I am more aware of kids’ books, and stories for kids. Because my wife and I love books, so we just want to get them a lot of books! It’s one of their main toys in the morning, putting out a bunch of books for them to check out. We read to them a lot, but they’ll also just sit there with a book and play with it! Seeing through their eyes, what makes something interesting in a book to them — obviously, it’s not really the plot — there’s so many things moving in the book. So many things you pull and slide, and so they definitely really like those types of things, like textures. There’s a cool book, Never Touch a Monster, it’s got these little prickly things on all the pages and stuff.

The books I write, they obviously won’t read them until they’re a little older. But I am excited to one day read them to them, or have them watch Avatar.

Do you have any future projects in mind for after you finish Rebel Geniuses?

I’ve got a bunch of story ideas, [and] I’m trying to decide which one I want to pursue next, and what format. Maybe graphic novels would be fun — writing Korra was my first graphic novel script, and it was fun to collaborate with one artist on it. I learned a lot about telling a story in that medium, which I really enjoyed. So maybe I’ll explore that down the road!

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars Part 2 and Warrior Genius are available from booksellers and comic book stores today!

Sean Astin Has Gifted Fans with a TMMT/Step Brothers Crossover

Thanks to the past five years they’ve spent costarring on Nickelodeon’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, you could say that Sean Astin and Rob Paulsen view each other the way their characters do: as brothers who are also best friends… even if they do sometimes squabble. Such is why it made perfect sense for Rob to enlist Sean for a very special episode of Nerdist's Alpha series Talkin’ Toons: one in which the turtles channelled their brotherly love (and, yes, rivalry) to sub in for Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly in a classic scene from Step Brothers.

It's hard to think anything could ever top the original, but Rob filling in for Reilly’s Dale in the style of his Raphael from the 1987 series, and Astin taking over for Ferrell’s Brennan as Raphael from the 2012 series, was better than a samurai sword autographed by Randy Jackson.

If you want to check out this full episode of Talkin’ Toons, along with all past and future ones, you can only find them at Nerdist's interactive online Alpha community. It’s just one of their many great shows there, and if you’re not already a member your first 30 days are free when you sign up.

What other famous movie brothers should Sean Astin and Rob Paulsen sub in for? The Blues Brothers, or The Boondock Saints? Perhaps they can enlist their fellow turtles to reenact John Singleton’s Four Brothers. Be cool, not rude, dude, and share your best ideas with NickALive! know in the comments below!

Drake Bell Hopes For a 'Drake & Josh' Reboot: 'Let's Do It' *Updated*

Drake Bell, who is currently in the midst of his Drake Bell Stripped Tour, stopped by the Billboard office to perform a few tracks and chat about his music. But perhaps the most exciting part of his visit for those tuned into his Facebook Live stream was when the 31-year-old discussed the possibility of a Drake & Josh reboot.

Speaking with Billboard’s Kevan Kenney, Bell discussed the idea of reviving his mid-2000s Nickelodeon show, comparing a potential reunion to the Beatles. “Look, when the Beatles wanted to get back together, John was always like, ‘Hey, let me know when the rehearsal is!’ and Paul was always like, ‘No, we can’t do that,’” Bell says. “So I’ve always said I’m the John Lennon of a Drake & Josh reunion. So if you tell JP, let’s do it.”

On the subject of Peck, Bell also commented on their up-and-down, yet extremely close relationship, explaining that they basically feel like siblings.

“We’re brothers,” Bell shares. “Honestly, we’ve known each other for 20 years almost, and we’ve had our ups and downs. It’s same with my own brothers. I mean we’ve had times where I wanna throw my brother through the wall and there’s other times where I wanna grab him and be like, ‘Dude, you’re my best friend! I love you to death.’ And I think for Josh…he was an only child, so I think I was really the closest thing that he would ever have to a brother and we were really close.”

Last year, Bell had taken to Twitter to express how upset he was over not being invited to Peck’s wedding, writing in a since-deleted tweet that their ties were “officially cut.” However, the pair mended their relationship after they ran into each other at the 2017 MTV VMAs.

“When I saw him at the VMAs…he threw his arm around me, and we hashed it out," Bell states. "And he’s like, ‘No hard feelings, man, I love you man, you’re my bro.’ So it’s all water under the bridge.”

You can watch the full clip of Drake Bell discussing his friendship with Josh Peck below!:

The wedding guest list drama refuses to calm down, though. Even though the former costars officially hugged it out in August, the saga continued yesterday when Drake Bell stopped by TRL, where he was asked the million dollar question: After being snubbed by his TV bro, would Josh ever be invited to his wedding?

"You did have some drama with your former Drake and Josh costar, Josh Peck,"TRL host Tamara Dhia brought up to her guest, Drake Bell, before playing a video of the onscreen duo.

"This was after Josh didn't invite me to his wedding," Bell pointed out at the video. "I mean, I've only known the guy 20 years," he joked.

"As a brother would take it, I was a little slighted, so I kinda spouted off a little bit," the actor said, referencing his now-infamous Twitter rant. Clarifying his current relationship with Peck, Bell continued, "We've had our ups and downs. There's been times where we didn't want to talk to each other unless it was the dialogue in the show. And there were other times where we would do 12-hour days, and then I'd go over to his house...and we'd play video games, or watch movies, or hang out, and we were inseparable. So honestly, it's the closest to a brother relationship with someone who's not your brother. He's family."

Hug me....

A post shared by Josh Peck (@shuapeck) on

While Bell's sweet sentiments make it sound like the squabble is officially squashed, the actor might still be feeling pretty petty over the invite snub. When asked if he'd invite Peck to his own future nuptials, Bell hilariously replied, "No. No, definitely not. And I'm gonna have the best wedding!"

And although Bell isn't currently engaged, he promises that Peck is going to miss out on a heck of a party when the time comes. "I'm going to fly in on a tiger," he mused. "But we're one Cornish game hen short," so it looks like Peck will be cut from the guest list!

"It's going to be like the Ringling Brothers Circus," said Bell. "It's going to be amazing, but yeah, no Josh."

But Bell quickly clarified, telling the audience that he was only joking. "I'm just kidding!" he said. "Of course he's invited."

Also, from Cheddar:

The Rise of Nickelodeon Nostalgia

Drake Bell is all in on a "Drake and Josh" reboot.

The musician and actor says he'd "love to" team up with Josh Peck to bring back their hit early-2000's Nickelodeon sitcom. "The show is almost more popular now than when it was airing," the star says, crediting social media with its cultural staying power. He credits technology with keeping a show that's been off the air since 2007 popular enough to be regularly quoted and referenced by fans.

Bell tells Cheddar he and Peck often wonder how their experience as child stars would be different with today's social platforms. He says he remembers being on set when a friend told him about a new video sharing site called YouTube.

Now, he's also got a thriving YouTube channel with over 400,000 followers. He says it all started when he and the actor who played his dad on "Drake and Josh" posted an unofficial spin-off series that had fans coming back for more.

Bell is debuting a brand new sound with his latest EP, "Honest."

"The last albums I made were completely different than this," the singer says about returning to the studio. After working on covers, Bell shares, "I felt really deprived as a songwriter." Now he's back with four original songs and a pop-centric sound. Bell's focus on music doesn't mean he's stepping away from the acting world.

He tells Cheddar his goal is to record music, perform it on the road, and then work on acting projects when he's back at home in Los Angeles.

Drake Bell Returns to His Roots With New EP

Drake Bell is returning to his singer-songwriter roots with his new EP "Honest." The actor/musician joins Cheddar to discuss his new sound and future projects. He just dropped the music video to the EP's title song.

Bell is best known as being one half of the early-2000's Nickelodeon sitcom "Drake and Josh." He reveals whether any plans for a reboot are underway between he and co-star Josh Peck. He also weighs in on how social media would have changed his life as a child star a decade ago.

Finally, we put Bell to the test in a game of "Drake or Drake?" We ask the musician to guess whether different quotes are his own or from the rapper Drake. Find out how well the star knows his career's most-quotable moments.

Drake Bell gets 'Honest' about his friendship with Josh Peck

Drake Bell, artist and actor of the hit Nickelodeon series, "Drake & Josh," sat down with BUILD Series for a conversation about his latest four-track dance-pop EP, titled Honest, and everything else that's been going on in his life.

Bell is currently working as an independent artist. He's able to have a lot of creative control including how his music videos look like as well as getting to really dig deep in crafting his current sound. This week he released the highly anticipated music video for the single, "Honest."

Bell credited his acting skills to making the video, which was done on a shoestring budget. "I got to jump in the freezing cold ocean. We were shooting that in December. It was ice [cold]! That's acting! All my acting chops were used in that video."

Overall making music videos is still an awkward process for Bell as compared to just performing naturally on stage.

"When you have a camera in front of you, like, do I sing to the camera? You just kind of feel dumb. You just kind of have to lose yourself and be like 'All right, I trust you guys that this looks cool," the singer said.

While also promoting the release of his music video for "Honest," Bell also gave us an update on his friendship with his "Drake and Josh" co-star Josh Peck.

"He and I have such a connection. It's weird man. We've been together since we were kids. I remember when we were 11 or 12 years old, we were on the 'The Amanda Show,' I would go hang out at his house, we would have sleepovers and sit up at night and asked, 'What our show is going to be about?' and we would come up with these ideas and not even be thinking we would ever have a show really. This was years before "Drake & Josh," it was just us fantasizing."

Working together on-set at such an early age elicited that brotherly connection that even their non-verbal communication struck a chord between the two. Fast-forward to one of Peck's most-recent work, the short-lived FOX sitcom "Grandfathered," where the two were able to reunite and they got to have scenes with each other for the first time in nearly a decade with Bell making a cameo appearance.

"Man, we fell right back into it. I'm like 'Dude, I told you there's something there between us' ... it's once in a lifetime in this business. It's a Martin and Lewis, it's an Abbott and Costello, it's a Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder. Gene Wilder isn't going to find another Richard Pryor, you know, I'm not going to find another Josh," Bell explained.

However, last year it wasn't always sunshine and daisies for Bell and Peck: For those who forgot or weren't aware, Bell wasn't invited to Peck's wedding last summer which created a temporary tiff between the two buddies. Long story short, this caused an online uproar with their fans as to whether or not they were still going to be cordial with one another or will they end their friendship.

Fortunately, the dust settled and they eventually rekindled their friendship when they met in person again at the MTV VMAs last August.

"We have our tiffs sometimes. We're so close. Having that type of relationship especially in Hollywood, in this business, to have somebody you can call your friend and you know intimately and closely, I mean that's priceless!"

The brotherly love for each other looks to be mutual for now. We'll just have to wait and see if Josh attends Drake's wedding.

In the meantime, go check out the full interview with Drake Bell seen above and download his latest EP, Honest out now on iTunes and Google Play.
