SpongeBob SquarePants - The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom

Friday 13th October 2017 at 7:00pm

Nickelodeon treats viewers to a spooky stop-motion special with the premiere of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom, on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7p.m. (ET/PT)! The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom tells the story of the Flying Dutchman (Brian Doyle-Murray) coming to Bikini Bottom to make sure everyone in town is scared--especially SpongeBob, who seems to be unflappable in his belief that spooky things are actually funny.

Inspired by the visual style of classic stop-motion animation TV specials, Bikini Bottom is decked out for Halloween and features Sandy's treedome as a mad scientist's lab, including a giant remotely operated Acorn Monster; Mr. Krabs' restaurant as "The Horrors of the Chum Bucket," displaying scenes of Plankton torturing food; and Plankton's restaurant as "The Horrors of the Krusty Krab," telling the story of Mr. Krabs turning customers into Krabby Patties and more.

The characters wear Halloween costumes, with SpongeBob as a flower, Patrick as a knight, Sandy as a mad scientist, Mr. Krabs as a dollar bill, Plankton as a devil, Squidward as himself, and Karen as a cat. SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom features an original song, "The Scare Song," written by Mr. Lawrence, music by Eban Schletter and performed by the Flying Dutchman's crew of pirate ghosts.

Lip Sync Battle Shorties Halloween Special

Nickelodeon treats fans to all the fright and fun of Halloween in Lip Sync Battle Shorties Halloween Special, airing Sunday, Oct. 15, at 7:00 P.M. (ET/PT)! The all-new episode, hosted by multi-faceted entertainer Nick Cannon, features real-life kid participants syncing and dancing their hearts out to their favorite pop songs, set against Halloween-themed stages. The special also features a surprise appearance by Rico Rodriguez (Modern Family), who will present the Lip Sync Battle Shorties winner with their very own Shorties blinged-out mic.

In Lip Sync Battle Shorties Halloween Special, three hyped-up kid-battlers from across the country use their imagination to personalize their Halloween-themed performances from eccentric decorations to monster-themed costumes. Those going head to head include: Serena, from Staten Island, NY, performing one of her favorite songs “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga; Ethan from Salt Lake City, taking on “Immortals” by Fall Out Boy; and Kea from Honolulu, lip syncing “Rolex” by Ayo & Teo.

Viewers are in for a treat as Rodriguez surprises the contestants and joins them, along with host Cannon, show sidekick and commentator JoJo Siwa and the Shorties Dance Crew, for a Halloween celebratory performance of the classic “Ghostbusters” by Ray Parker Jr.

Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library - New Movie!

Monday 9th October 2017 at 7:00pm

Nickelodeon will premiere a new original TV movie, Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library, based on author Chris Grabenstein’s acclaimed children’s book of the same name, on Monday, Oct. 9, at 7:00 (ET/PT). Nickelodeon stars Casey Simpson (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn) and Breanna Yde (Nickelodeon’s School of Rock) join Russell Roberts (The Twilight Saga: New Moon) and newcomers AJ Rivera and Klarke Pipkin in the fantastical adventure about a group of friends whose overnight stay in their town’s new high-tech library turns into a daring, dangerous adventure of escape. The book, originally published in 2013 by Random House Children’s Books, boasts a 109-week run on the New York Times Best-Seller list.

World-renowned gamemaker Luigi Lemoncello (Russell Roberts) has built his latest creation--a new state-of-the-art library filled with whimsical and eccentric rooms, where hardcover books fly kids to shelves in the sky, and massive doors open into fantastical worlds. Kyle Keeley, Lemoncello’s biggest fan, is chosen to be one of the first to experience the fun, along with his best friend Akimi, a bookworm named Sierra (Klarke Pipkin), a goofball named Andrew Peckleman (A.J. Luis Rivera Jr.), his rival Charles Chiltington (Ty Nicolas Consiglio), and others. The kids must use their wits to complete riddles and collect clues that lead them out of this unique playground of imagination. When excitement turns to jeopardy, this world of wonder begins to spiral out of control as literary characters run amok and chaos ensues. It’s up to the kids to make everything right again or else they won’t be the only ones escaping.

Join in on the adventure by using ##MrLemoncellosLibrary and following @Nickelodeon on Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter for movie updates and sneak peeks.

Power Rangers Live Tour Dates Announced

It’s Morphin Time! Power Rangers, the global pop culture phenomenon, is celebrating 25 morphinomenal years and is heading to a city near you with the awesome martial arts spectacular, Power Rangers Live! Witness the epic, stunt-filled, live event for the whole family, Power Rangers Live as five ordinary teens morph into the Power Rangers to help save your town and the world from an alien threat and destruction!

Next year marks the 25th anniversary of Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers, the action adventure television series that was imported from Japan, adapted for American audiences, and has since expanded into 19 different iterations of the super powered action heroes.

In celebration of one of the longest-running children’s television shows, Red Light Management is producing an action-packed live show stopping in 50 North American cities. Beginning Saturday 17th February 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona at Comerica Theatre, six teens will morph into Power Rangers to help save cities from alien threats live on stage!

Power Rangers Live is a new interactive, mixed media stage production intended for the whole family, bringing all the action-packed stunts and epic martial arts from one of the longest running programs in TV history to a stage in front of your eyes. Find out when and where you can see Power Rangers Live below.

Power Rangers Live will take inspiration from the latest iteration of the series, Power Rangers Ninja Steel, following six ordinary teenagers who morph into the titular heroes and save the world from some kind of alien threat.

Power Rangers Live will arrive in towns across North America, including Los Angeles, Toronto, Las Vegas, and Atlanta to save each city. The show will feature high-energy martial arts, jaw-dropping stunts and state-of-the-art video and technology to entertain the entire family. The attraction will be the first live experience in over two decades.

“We have an incredible visual spectacular coming together and we’re working with an incredible creative director Amy Tinkham who has worked on tons of amazing productions,” Red Light Management Executive Producer Jonathan Shank told Amplify.

Tinkham has worked on Britney Spears: Live From Vegas and Dixie Chicks: Top of the World Tour.

Shank added, “I think this show is going to stand out from other productions that are in the market.”

In addition to celebrating 25 years on the air, Power Rangers Live follows the success of the brand’s movie out earlier this year which grossed $142 million worldwide for Lionsgate. The film featured Elizabeth Banks as the villain and, for the first time, an LGBT character that was heralded for inclusivity.

“The film has brought the show and the brand back into the pop culture forefront, but I also think that it is driven by Nickelodeon’s commitment to the Power Rangers over the past few years,” Shank said. “They have been important in building the kid audience between the ages of five and 12 years-old. It’s going to be a good combination of kids that are fans of Ninja Steel and the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers fans, the legacy Power Ranger fans.”

The latest incarnation of Power Rangers is Power Rangers Ninja Steel which runs on Nickelodeon USA. Nickelodeon started airing Power Rangers in 2011 after creator Haim Saban bought back the franchise from Disney for $43 million in 2010. Power Rangers currently airs in 150 markets around the world and is translated into numerous languages.

“There’s really a good message within Power Rangers of diversity and inclusion and also discipline through the martial arts themes. Those are values that are always going to be highly regarded in our society, certainly amongst family audiences,” Shank said. “Beyond that, there is a certain magic to the Power Rangers that allows them to cut through most of the other things out there and allows them to continue to be popular for more than two decades.”

CID Entertainment will be handling VIP packages for the tour including meet and greets with the Rangers. Citi is the official card of Saban’s Power Rangers Live. Beginning Tuesday 10th October 2017 at 12pm (local time), Citi card members will have access to a special pre-sale, as well as VIP packages through Citi’s Private Pass Program. The public on sale date will be Friday 13th October 2017 at 10:00 a.m. (local time). Head to www.powerrangerslive.com for more information. Go! Go! Power Rangers!

One of the exclusive VIP packages is the Ranger Pass, which features exclusive access to the Ranger Base after the show, Meet & Greet photo opportunity with the Power Rangers, an exclusive party gift, and much more.

15 Boxes of Cereal, 8 Pounds of Glitter and 1 Bag of Onions: Making of SpongeBob's Stop-Motion Halloween Special

The special, subtitled The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom, features a mix of puppet animation, marionette puppeteering, hand puppets and 2D hand-drawn animation.

SpongeBob SquarePants is getting the stop-motion treatment for an upcoming Halloween special!

The previously announced SpongeBob SquarePants: The Legend of Boo-Kini Bottom, which premieres Friday, October 13th at 7 p.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon USA, will tell the story of the Flying Dutchman (Brian Doyle-Murray) coming to Bikini Bottom — which is all decked out for Halloween — to make sure everyone in town is scared, but he runs into a challenge with SpongeBob (Tom Kenny), who seems firm in his belief that anything scary is actually funny.

The special was produced at Screen Novelties, a Los Angeles-based stop-motion animation production company. (This marks the second time that Nickelodeon has partnered with Screen Novelties on a stop-motion animation episode, following 2012's SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas!)

"We have done stop-motion before, and ever since we did the [Christmas episode], we've been wanting to do another one," Vincent Waller, co-executive producer of SpongeBob SquarePants, told The Hollywood Reporter. "Almost everybody I know loves Halloween, so we thought, 'Why not Halloween?'"

Adds Marc Ceccarelli, who also serves as co-EP on the series: "We also think that stop-motion works especially well for Halloween because of that creepy factor."

Ceccarelli and Waller say the episode was in the works for nearly a year in total (most episodes take about nine months from start to finish). The idea was sparked by the desire to do a story line that included the type of dark rides found at amusement parks. In fact, the episode features a sequence in which SpongeBob and Patrick are on such a ride (see the photo below).

Chris Finnegan, producer at Screen Novelties producer, says the process begins when they receive an animatic, storyboard and voice tracks. "The initial phase is design," he says. "We have to figure out how to translate this established, two-dimensional property and sets and characters into 3-D stop motion. And then we bring in a puppet fabrication team and build the sets — it's a pretty complex process."

The team creates skeletons for each character that consist of an intricate "wire and ball" combination "so that the characters can be manipulated," he says, adding that a lot of time also goes into creating the props. "A lot of what we do in stop motion is working with common materials. We're making everything from scratch, so we can use some fun materials and objects in our sets."

Roughly three months are spent on puppet and set fabrication, another three months on the animation and then a couple more months in post-production on the visual effects.

In making the episode, the Screen Novelties team incorporated miniature puppets; 27 unique sets across five stages; 15 boxes of breakfast cereal to create texture on Bikini Bottom's coral reefs; eight pounds of glitter to decorate SpongeBob’s Halloween pineapple house; hundreds of popsicle sticks to create the planks of the rollercoaster track that Patrick (Bill Fagerbakke) and SpongeBob ride; and "black lights" to create a fluorescent glow across the puppets and sets; and 315 strips of toupee tape.

The team also created a ship for the Flying Dutchman (see it in its early stages, above) as well as a pinball machine that's part of the ride SpongeBob and Patrick hop on at the Dutchman's behest.

In addition, the special mixes several production techniques including stop-motion puppet animation, marionette puppeteering, hand puppets and 2D hand-drawn animation designed by Sally Cruikshank, who's worked on Sesame Street and created the opening title sequence for Ruthless People, among other credits.

A first for Screen Novelties was a "huge" bag of real onions used in one scene. "That's an example of something you don't do every day," Finnegan quips, adding: "The crew was crying."

Waller and Ceccarelli gave praise to Screen Novelties for avoiding computer-generated imagery as much as possible in favor of getting creative with real materials. For example, Patrick's costume — a knight's suit of armor — was made in part by stretching a stainless steel Brillo pad around the body. "You never would have that that's what they used," Waller says.

"A couple of things we did on this episode that I am really proud of, and I think would be interesting for viewers to look out for, is that we shot a lot of footage under black lights," Finnegan says, nothing the dark-ride inspiration. "We have a lot of puppets with special DayGlo paint and really intense black lights that gave a spooky feel to the whole thing."

Asked if there are plans for a third stop-motion special for SpongeBob and his pals, Waller teases: "We've got some stuff up our sleeve, but we can't really talk about it yet."

SpongeBob SquarePants is executive produced by creator Stephen Hillenburg. The special, directed by Mark Caballero and Seamus Walsh, was written by Mr. Lawrence, who also wrote an original song, "The Scare Song," for the episode, with music by Eban Schletter.

What's Nickelodeon Slime Really Made Of? TV Veteran Marc Summers Answers That and More for His New Documentary

If you’re an ’80s or ’90s Nick Kid, you recognize Marc Summers as the host of Nickelodeon’s iconic game show Double Dare. If your kitchen is your happy place, you know him from Food Network’s Unwrapped. But his new documentary offers a raw, real and endlessly entertaining look at his more than three decades in show business.

On Your Marc captures Summers behind-the-scenes as he creates his 2016 one-man play, The Life and Slimes of Marc Summers. Ever the showman, Summers is currently touring the United States, creating one-of-a-kind experiences for audiences who watch his screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse. (He’ll be in Brooklyn on Thursday before heading to Philadelphia, Austin, Baltimore and Chicago.)

“I always wanted to do theater and got side-tracked along the way. In the entertainment industry, you have no control of your own life. Other people make decisions for you,” Summers, 65, tells PEOPLE.

For the Indiana native, that meant becoming a magician first, then a comic — he performed at The Comedy Store in the 1970s, working alongside stars like David Letterman, Jay Leno and Robin Williams — before landing Double Dare in 1986.

“I came out of the womb knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I’m one of the few people who had a passion from a very young age,” says Summers, who soaked in every minute of classics like The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and The Ed Sullivan Show.

“I would watch these things and live vicariously through them and say, how do I do that? How do I get on stage?” he says. “And then I found Bob Barker doing game shows, and I thought, well, I don’t know if I can act, but I know I can be myself. And so through the magic and the standup, I got to know my voice.”

Why return to theater? After breaking every bone in his face during a 2012 car accident and being diagnosed with cancer seven years ago (he’s now in remission), he realized there’s “no time like the present” to follow your dream.

As for the tour, “I’ve never done anything terribly normal, and it’s attributed to show business,” Summers says. “We started to be a little renegade. … We thought, well, let’s bring Double Dare to the people.”

Attendees can participate in live physical challenges — and, yes, even get slimed!

“It sort of kicks back to the old vaudeville days, where you see a movie and then there’s a live stage show,” Summers says.

What is the infamous green liquid that’s been dumped on the heads of every tween/teen celebrity imaginable?

Though Summers says there have been “a million revivals,” he dilvulged the secret to Nickelodeon’s surprisingly simple original recipe: vanilla pudding, apple sauce and green food coloring.

“The insurance company made us guarantee if any of this got in the kids’ mouths it was edible,” he explains. “And it tasted good, and it smelled great.”

You’ll have to see On Your Marc— which features cameos by his celebrity friends Guy Fieri, Ryan Seacrest and Neil Patrick Harris — to learn more about Summers’ incredible life. But there’s one thing he hopes every viewer takes away from his movie.

“That everybody’s got a great story,” he says. “That you probably could have a fantastic one-person show if you walk down the street — be it Los Angeles, Indianapolis; Indiana; Toledo, Ohio or New York City. I was fortunate enough to meet the right people and get this thing done. And I always like to say, just because you’re in show business doesn’t make you special. … God knows, there are many people who don’t know who Marc Summers is, and the one thing I asked is that people walk away with something positive. And the one thing I think I’ve been overcome is the word ‘no.'”

Nickelodeon And HillFresh International Partner For Nick-Branded Fresh Produce In Europe

Nickelodeon & Viacom Consumer Products (NVCP) and HillFresh International have signed a multi-year programme in Europe to offer a range of Nickelodeon-branded healthy snacking produce for children that will hit the market from November 2017!

“We are offering fruit and vegetable snacks with branding from popular Nickelodeon properties such as Blaze and the Monster Machines, PAW Patrol, Dora the Explorer, Shimmer & Shine, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and SpongeBob SquarePants,” reveals Stephan Schneider, Heads of Marketing and Communications at HillFresh.

With the food industry being increasingly encouraged to steer away from promoting products containing high levels of sugar or salt, HillFresh’s Nickelodeon-branded range is designed to promote healthy eating among children in a fun and playful manner.

All products within the range will include collectable playing cards and packaging that inspires children’s creativity. The snacks will also feature fun shapes such as SpongeBob pineapples or PAW Patrol tangerines.

The goal is develop a solid promotion of fresh fruits and vegetables that instills healthy eating habits in children for years to come.

“Both HillFresh and Nickelodeon feel this is the right way to go,” Schneider added. “It’s not easy to market fresh produce to kids but we feel this might be a good way to do it.

“The goal of the fresh produce industry as a whole is to get kids to eat more fresh fruit and vegetables because raising consumption among kids will have a big impact not only on fruit sales today, but in the years to come as well.

“It will create a snowball effect where this generation will pass on to their children the healthy vibe that is going around at the moment.

“Should we make this a success that would be the ultimate achievement for HillFresh.”
