Investment in Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico Expands ViacomCBS’ Position as a Leading Spanish Language Content Producer, Feeding more Premier Spanish Language Content to Global Streaming Platforms Paramount+, Pluto TV and Linear Networks Worldwide

Transaction Will Bolster ViacomCBS Networks International’s Studio Production Capabilities and Complement its Portfolio of Production Assets in Latin America


NEW YORK — October 28, 2021 — ViacomCBS Inc. (NASDAQ: VIAC, VIACA) today announced that ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a majority stake in the acclaimed Spanish language content producer, Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico from The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) and the founding family of Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico. ViacomCBS International Studios’ VIS, a division of VCNI, will operate Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico as a collaborative partnership with the founding family. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. 

Through this transaction, VCNI will gain access to Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico’s studio operations in both Colombia and Mexico, as well as many hours of library content, which is comprised of multifaceted entertainment spanning multiple key genres including premium series, telenovelas, films, documentaries, unscripted, kids and family, branded and digital content and live sports shows produced for various audiences. This content will fuel ViacomCBS’ global streaming platforms including Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and its linear networks around the world.  Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico will also bolster ViacomCBS’ Spanish language content production capabilities to capitalize on significant content demand in the region and worldwide. This transaction combined with VCNI’s existing portfolio in Latin America, which includes VIS’ studio business and  broadcasters Telefe in Argentina and the recently acquired Chilevisión in Chile, will position ViacomCBS as one of the leading Spanish-language content production companies in the world. 

“The acquisition of Fox TeleColombia & Estudios TeleMexico, combined with ViacomCBS’ existing Spanish-language portfolio including Telefe and Chilevisión, reinforces the company’s position as a leading worldwide producer of Spanish-language content,” said Raffaele Annecchino, President and CEO, ViacomCBS Networks International. “This content will fuel ViacomCBS’ global ecosystem across Paramount+, Pluto TV and its linear networks.”

The acquisition joins ViacomCBS’ Latin American portfolio, which includes two of the region’s most-watched free-to-air broadcasters, Telefe in Argentina and Chilevisión in Chile; the premium SVOD service, Paramount+; top FAST service Pluto TV; ViacomCBS International Studios production hubs; comedy YouTube channel and creators, Porta dos Fundos; more than 10 branded pay TV networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Comedy Central, among others; multiple on-the-ground events and experiences; and an extensive consumer products catalogue.

NEW YORK, NY — OCTOBER 28, 2021 –ViacomCBS, parent company of Paramount+, CBS, MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, today released the findings of its newest Global Insights project, Reflecting Me: Global Representation On Screen, which uncovers that global audiences feel entertainment companies have a responsibility to increase authentic, accurate on-screen representation.

Reflecting Me: Global Representation On Screen is an expansive in-depth exploration of how television and entertainment teach people about themselves and others, with more than 15,000 people surveyed from across 15 countries worldwide. The study was commissioned by ViacomCBS Networks International’s Race and Equity Taskforce, as part of Content for Change, a global ViacomCBS initiative that aims to counteract racism, bias, stereotypes and hate through the company’s culture, creative supply chain, and ultimately the content it creates. 

Representation matters to audiences all around the world, with more than 80 percent calling for more to be done to improve representation both on and off screen. It is also widely recognized that representation has an impact on the real world by influencing people’s perceptions, with 85 percent of respondents in agreement. Those that feel poorly represented suggest that this is not only due to not seeing enough people like them on screen but also due to seeing inaccurate portrayals, with more than half (52 percent) of people who feel poorly represented saying accuracy is lacking.

“Representation in media is a critical component to authentically connecting with diverse audiences and communities,” said Colleen Fahey Rush, EVP, Chief Research Officer, ViacomCBS. “Along with launching our expanded Content for Change initiative, this study reflects how ViacomCBS is proactively taking steps to transform our entire creative ecosystem to better serve our audiences and create meaningful change now and for the future.”

Reflecting Me: Global Representation On Screen

Reflecting Me: Global Representation On Screen is an exploration of how people around the world feel about on screen representation, shedding light on various aspects of diversity, including ethnicity, gender identity, sexuality, disability and more.

“Through this study, for the first time, we see evidence of the connection between representation on screen and mental health,” said Christian Kurz, Senior Vice President, Global Streaming and Corporate Insights. “We know representation done right can aid in improving the lives of people globally and have the responsibility not only to continue the changes within our industry but also serve as a catalyst for positive social change around the world.”

“From the early days after the formation of the VCNI Programming and Audience Task Force, we knew that in order to succeed, we had to understand the opinions behind the scenes -- those of our audience,” said one of ViacomCBS’ Race and Equity Task Force Leaders, Susan Nave. “Made up of an international team across all aspects of our business, we worked in close collaboration with the global insights team to identify key markets and individuals, giving us a truly international view around on-screen representation. We think it’s eye opening, thought provoking and an excellent road map for our business.”

The Importance of Representation

Representation matters to audiences all around the world. In fact, audiences are calling for more to be done to improve representation, both on and off screen.

-- More than 80 percent of people globally say it is important that TV shows and movies offer diverse representation of lots of different groups and identities

- This rises to 85 percent among people with mixed heritage, nearly 90 percent among marginalized ethnic groups, and more than 90 percent among Black people
 
The Complexity of Representation

Respondents agreed, effective representation is not just about seeing themselves reflected on screen, it’s also about how they’re represented.

-- Among those who feel poorly represented in TV shows and movies, nearly 6 in 10 feel that people like them are not represented enough

-- Among those who feel poorly represented in TV shows and movies, more than half feel that people like them are represented inaccurately

Around the world, the feeling of being poorly represented is due to a combination of factors, which vary somewhat country by country. Interestingly, in every country, the #1 issue with representation is either around race or ethnicity or economic status.

-- Top factors poorly represented in TV shows and movies:

- “Race and ethnicity” ranks #1 in Australia, Netherlands, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, UK and USA

- “Economic status” ranks #1 in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Germany, Italy, Malaysia, Mexico, Poland

However, how well represented you feel depends on who you are and where you are in the world.

-- For example, some country differences between the factors poorly represented in TV and movies are:

- “Race and ethnicity” is not in the top 5 for Argentina, Chile, Germany, Italy and Poland

- “Age” ranks #2 in Australia, Germany, Poland and the UK

- “Religion or beliefs” ranks #2 in Brazil, Malaysia and Singapore

Although appearance is very important, representation is not just about how people look – often the sorts of lives people see reflected on screen don’t look like theirs.

-- Those who feel poorly represented, also say they do not see enough people that:

- “Behave like me” (33%)

- “Are the same economic level as me” (29%)

- “Speak with the same accent or dialect as me” (22%)

- “Have a family like mine” (21%)

- “Live in a home like mine” (21%)

Reasons for Feeling Poorly Represented

Many who feel poorly represented do not see enough people like them on screen, based on aspects of their appearance.

-- Nearly 70 percent of people who feel poorly represented globally say they do not see enough people like them on screen, based on aspects of their appearance, such as their body type, and how they look and dress.

-- Colorism is also an issue that globally more than half of women agree, the impact of colorism means that women with lighter skin tones are often seen as more appealing – and equally are often more present on screen.

-- Conventions of appearance also negatively impact gender non-conforming and disabled people, and among those who feel poorly represented, nearly 40 percent of those with a physical disability say they don’t see people with their body type on-screen.

The Impact of Poor Representation

Perpetuating stereotypes and lazy portrayals of different groups are hugely damaging to audiences. Harmful stereotypes are especially apparent among certain ethnic groups, who feel they are portrayed in particularly negative ways. For example:

-- Middle Eastern and Arabic people (20%) and Black people (18%) feel they are portrayed as criminal

-- Middle Eastern and Arabic people (19%) and Indigenous people (10%) feel they are portrayed as angry

-- Middle Eastern and Arabic people (17%) and Black people (16%) feel they are portrayed as dangerous 

Poor representation has a negative impact on the way people feel. 

Nearly 60 percent of those who feel poorly represented say it makes them feel unimportant, ignored, or disappointed
-- Among those that feel poorly represented, the top three areas that a lack of representation impacts are:

- “Self-esteem and confidence” (41%)

- “Sense of belonging” (40%)

- “Opportunities” (34%)

-- Globally, nearly 60 percent of those who feel their gender identity is poorly represented say their self-esteem and confidence is affected

-- Among those who feel their disability is poorly represented on screen, more than 40 percent say this lack of representation has affected their mental health (more than twice as likely as others who feel poorly represented)

-- Nearly 40 percent of those who feel their race or ethnicity is poorly represented say their connection to their cultural heritage is affected (more than twice as high as the average among all people who feel poorly represented)

The Need for Change…

Globally, most people agree that change is needed.

-- Nearly 80 percent agree more diversity is needed in TV shows and movies.

-- This rises to more than 80 percent among people who consider themselves part of an under-represented group, and nearly 90 percent among Black people.

-- Only half of people globally are satisfied with the current level of representation that they see in TV shows and movies

Audiences give equal weight to the importance of authenticity and diversity when it comes to on screen representation.

-- More than half of people globally feel there needs to be more accurate representation of certain groups and identities in TV shows and movies.

There is widespread optimism for the future of representation on screen, even among those who feel poorly represented.

-- In the next five years, nearly half of people globally think representation in TV shows and movies will get better

Ever wanted to go for a ride in the Patty Wagon from SpongeBob SquarePants or cruise around town looking for the best pizza joint in the Party Wagon from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Now's your chance with Uber's Famous Rides initiative!


Between Oct. 29-31, Uber riders in Los Angeles, Atlanta or Miami are eligible to be met by a vehicle well-known in pop culture, including the aforementioned Patty Wagon and Party Wagon! The Patty Wagon will be in Los Angeles, whilst Party Wagon will be patrolling Miami. Meanwhile in Atlanta, riders could be surprised by the psychedelic Scooby-Doo' Mystery Machine.

The Patty Wagon first appeared in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, where SpongeBob and Patrick ride it to Shell City. The vehicle is shaped like a Krabby Patty and built with layers of ingredients like a real Krabby Patty.


The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Party Wagon made its first appearance in Nickelodeon's hit 2012 CG-animated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series.

Riders met by either of the three vehicles and will pay standard Uber X pricing for the ride. Uber plans to give out as many of the pop culture vehicle rides as possible.


Uber riders who get surprise famous rides will also get free themed masks to match the vehicle they ride in.

Brazil's SBT to Lose Nickelodeon Programming on September 1 [Update: Nick Programming Coming Back to SBT]

The Brazilian free-to-air TV network SBT will no longer broadcast Nickelodeon programming from September 1, with ViacomCBS deciding not to renew the rights agreement between the two companies. Nickelodeon programming is scheduled on the network until August 31. It is understood that SBT are looking at ways to extend the contract, first signed seven years ago. The reason for ViacomCBS ending the agreement is currently unknown.


Update (29/10) - SBT and ViacomCBS have reached an agreement which will see Nickelodeon programming such as iCarly and Henry Danger brought back onto SBT's schedules!

Nickelodeon não renova contrato e abre buracos na programação do SBT

A programação do SBT sofrerá um duro golpe na virada do mês. A emissora de Silvio Santos foi notificada pela Viacom que o contrato de parceria entre as empresas, firmado há sete anos, não será mais renovado a partir do primeiro dia de setembro. Com isso, a rede deixará de ter autorização para transmitir as produções infantis da Nickelodeon, que ocupam diversos horários estratégicos. O fim do acordo provocará um o surgimento de um buraco na grade de programação de segunda a sábado: apenas em São Paulo, as produções da gigante americana preenchem um espaço de 6h35min semanais. Em outras cidades, o tempo destinado para as séries infantis chega a dobrar.

Mesmo sem alcançar os índices de audiência de outrora, quando chegavam a disputar a liderança com a Globo, os seriados da Nickelodeon ainda eram utilizados como alavanca de Ibope pelo SBT. Desde o início do ano, ciente da aproximação do final do contrato, os executivos da emissora tentaram encontrar produções substitutas no mercado, mas esbarraram nos caprichos de Silvio Santos e no avanço do streaming no Brasil. Sem conseguir contratos com as grandes produtoras, o canal passou a insistir em Lassie, As Aventuras de Rin-Tin-Tin e Os Garotinhos.

Nos últimos meses, apenas duas produções da Viacom haviam restado no catálogo da rede. Transmitidas à exaustão e com poucos episódios produzidos, The Thundermans e Henry Danger foram exibidas pelo canal nos mais diversos horários. A primeira, que encerra o Bom dia & Cia, seguirá em cartaz em São Paulo até o dia 31. A segunda teve a sua última exibição na metrópole no sábado (28), em uma maratona de quase duas horas e meia no ar.

A reportagem do TV Pop apurou que a diretoria do SBT segue tentando encontrar uma forma de reverter, ou ao menos postergar, o distrato contratual feito pela Viacom. No entanto, dificilmente haverá um recuo por parte do conglomerado multinacional. A empresa, assim como a Disney, reduzirá a exposição de seus conteúdos na TV e concentrará seus investimentos em sua plataforma de streaming, a Paramount+, que ainda não conseguiu ganhar capilaridade no país — para a companhia, tirar as séries da TV aberta é uma forma de fazer com que o público tenha que assinar o serviço para agradar os filhos, que devem estranhar a ausência dos seriados na emissora.

Enquanto isso, as afiliadas da rede de Silvio Santos já foram avisadas sobre a proibição da exibição das duas séries a partir da meia-noite de 1º de setembro, e o departamento de Programação deu uma série de alternativas para que as parceiras do canal consigam preencher os buracos na programação. Dentre elas, estão a exibição do trio mofado de Silvio Santos (Lassie, As Aventuras de Rin-Tin-Tin e Os Garotinhos), o seriado The Big Bang Theory e a transmissão de desenhos animados, que poderão ser gravados pelas praças a partir da exibição feita pelo Bom dia & Cia.

NICKELODEON NÃO RENOVA COM O SBT E SÉRIES DEIXAM O CANAL

A partir do dia 1° de setembro, o SBT deixará em contar em sua programação com todas as séries em live-action e animações da Nickelodeon, devido a não renovação contratual por parte da ViacomCBS, via TV Pop.

De acordo com a nota, não se sabem os motivos que levaram o grupo a não renovar o contrato, mas é bastante provável que a medida faça parte da mesma estratégia que a de outros grupos, a priorização ao seu serviço de streaming — neste caso, o Paramount+ —, detendo a exclusividade sob tais produções. O site destaca que a diretoria do SBT está tentando uma nova rodada de negociações, mas que já alerta as afiliadas da proibição na exibição de qualquer produto da Nickelodeon a partir do dia 1°.

Em São Paulo, o SBT conta com vários espaços na programação destinados ao público infanto-juvenil que exibiam produções da Nick como o Bom dia & Cia, Sábado Animado e uma maratona de 2h30 seguidas de Os Thundermans aos finais de semana.

SBT negocia aquisição de iCarly e novo pacote de séries da Nickelodeon

Reviravolta na relação entre o SBT e a Viacom. A emissora de Silvio Santos se prepara para anunciar nos próximos dias um novo acordo com a empresa, que prevê a compra de um pacote de séries originalmente transmitidas pela Nickelodeon. Dentre as principais atrações contempladas pelo contrato, estão diversos episódios de iCarly, exibida originalmente entre 2007 e 2012, e a renovação dos direitos de Henry Danger, seriado responsável pelos maiores índices de audiência da rede aos sábados. Nos bastidores, a chegada das produções já é dada como certa, restando apenas detalhes burocráticos para que o novo contrato seja anunciado e divulgado para a imprensa.

Oficialmente, o SBT confirma que está negociando uma nova safra de produções da Nickelodeon. Questionada pelo TV Pop sobre as negociações com a Viacom, a assessoria de imprensa do canal se limitou a dizer que a rede, de fato, está negociando com a empresa e que “logo mais deverá anunciar as mudanças na programação”. Há a expectativa de que o novo acordo possa ser oficializado ainda neste mês, para minimizar o impacto provocado pela expiração do atual vínculo contratual, em que restaram disponíveis apenas alguns episódios de The Thundermans e Henry Danger.

A emissora de Silvio Santos não esperava chegar a um denominador comum com a Viacom. Desde o final de agosto, os executivos da empresa estavam fazendo uma espécie de operação tartaruga para ganhar tempo na mesa de negociações com a multinacional. De lá pra cá, uma enorme gama de séries e desenhos animados deixaram de ser transmitidos, como Bob Esponja, que deixou de fazer parte do catálogo do SBT em 31 de agosto. Porém, a dona da Nickelodeon permanecia irredutível em retirar todas as suas produções da televisão aberta, focando seus esforços no streaming.

No entanto, os diretores da emissora conseguiram argumentar de que a manutenção dos produtos na TV aberta não prejudicaria a performance delas em vídeo on demand, e sim que serviria para aumentar o interesse do público pelos conteúdos da empresa. A reportagem apurou que a rede utilizou o exemplo do Mundo Disney, transmitido entre 2015 e 2018, para comprovar que é possível ter uma relação de benefício mútuo para as companhias. Ao que tudo indica, a justificativa colou — ao ponto da Viacom ter topado negociar os direitos de iCarly, um de seus principais produtos.

How ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Lays the Foundation for the Next Generation of the Iconic Franchise

In a joint interview, Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins and franchise captain Alex Kurtzman open up about how the Paramount+ kids- and family-focused animated series may pave the way for a new feature film chapter.

Alex Kurtzman hasn’t written a Star Trek feature film since 2013, but his new animated kids- and family-focused series, Prodigy— his fifth show in the Paramount+ version of the beloved franchise — could be the ticket that gets him back to the box office.

The captain of the Star Trek franchise — who inked a new, nine-figure deal with IP owner CBS Studios in August — has for years wanted to boldly go where Star Wars has gone before: to reach younger kids. “I go back to my childhood and Luke Skywalker, the [Star Wars] farm boy who looks out at the twin suns of Tatooine and imagines his future. Trek never gave me that,” Kurtzman toldThe Hollywood Reporter in early 2019, when he first revealed plans for what would become Star Trek: Prodigy. The animated series was originally developed for Nickelodeon and targets kids ages 6 to 11. It features a CG animation so impressive that Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins — who bought the show as president of the aforementioned cable network — wishes it were launching in theaters.

“I can’t lie, when I sat there at Comic-Con, I wished it was,” Robbins recalls of watching Prodigy debut during his secret trip to New York Comic-Con earlier this month. “I just can’t help be excited about how this franchise will now be introduced in such a great way. As a parent, that gets me excited. I really wanted to see it play in a room and it was super cool — and it does really play like a movie.”

Prodigy will instead bow on Paramount+ with an hourlong episode Oct. 28, followed by weekly installments of its first 10 episodes. A run on Nickelodeon is also in the cards for a later date as Robbins, like his peers, prioritizes streaming over linear. Robbins — who continues to serve as president of Nickelodeon and oversees kids and family content at Paramount+ — believes Prodigy is a perfect fit with the platform’s popular Nickelodeon content and Kurtzman’s other Star Trek fare.

While the pricey show is only launching today, both Robbins and Kurtzman are already developing other big ideas such as a kids- and family-focused version of Prodigy that includes a feature film designed to bow theatrically as well as other live-action features that could live alongside the Paramount Pictures’ J.J. Abrams-produced mystery Star Trek movie.

“We’re working on several fronts and obviously Alex is the key for the franchise [on Paramount+]. J.J. has been the keeper of the franchise on the film side. We hope that as a company that we do what’s right for the franchise altogether,” Robbins says.

Prodigy is the fifth show in the Kurtzman Star Trek universe and joins Picard, adult-focused animated entry Lower Decks, flagship Discovery and the upcoming Strange New Worlds at Paramount+, the exclusive home of the franchise. Brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman (Hotel Transylvania, The Lego Movie) created the series that features the return of Kate Mulgrew’s Voyager character Captain Kathryn Janeway and follows a group of lawless teens searching for adventure.

Below, Robbins and Kurtzman reveal more about their grand plans for Prodigy (expect merchandising, spinoffs), how they hope to create new Trek fans from an early age while still engaging diehard fans and the strategy of the franchise for the next decade.


Alex, the first time that we talked about what would become Prodigy was in early 2019 when you mentioned your desire to create a Star Trek show for a younger audience who could, in success, stay with the franchise through adulthood. Was turning Trek into a four-quadrant franchise how you pitched what became Prodigy at the time?

Kurtzman: Yes. [CBS Studios president] David Stapf and I from the beginning laid out a five-year plan for Trek. The missing piece — and perhaps the most significant piece — was the kid component. We needed someone that knew how to specifically do children’s television. I worked on Transformers as an animated show, but I needed a partner who could guide us through it. David and I went to see Brian Robbins and [Nickelodeon animation head] Ramsey Naito when the company was still bifurcated. It was an instant connection. We felt comfortable given their vast knowledge of the children’s landscape but also the infrastructure that they have in Nickelodeon was so specific and we knew we needed that. Our great hope was that there would be a merger down the line and it would make things easier for everybody. We told Brian and Ramsey that we felt that it was important to make it a cinematic experience to make it special for kids. There was no hesitation on their part about that. The lack of a merger didn’t stop Brian from saying yes in that moment.

Robbins: There was a step before you came over, where I called David Nevins and said, “We should really try to do something with the franchise and Nickelodeon,” knowing that it had not really been explored before. Ramsey, who was a giant Trek fan as a kid and still is, had the conversation and Nevins said, “It’s funny that you’re saying this because Alex was just in here saying we need to do this.” You guys came over quickly after that and toured the studio and we were just off to the races.

Kurtzman: We felt that the key was to invest both in children and their parents in these characters and to take the time at a deeper level to get to know them, get to love them. The creators, Dan and Kevin Hageman, had this brilliant concept from the start, which was the idea that these children don’t understand each other for the first part of it. It wasn’t until they’re around a universal translator that they suddenly realize that all their preconceived notions about who they were, were all wrong. That is a core message of Star Trek. I don’t think the impact of that revelation would have worked if we hadn’t been able to take the time to set those characters up that way.

The Prodigy pilot is 45 minutes and has a cinematic feel to it. What’s the target demo of Prodigy, since most kids programming tends to have shorter episodic run times. And had you done a co-viewing show like this before with this kind of sizable budget?

Robbins: We knew it was going to be for our core 6 to 11 audience and parents. We were going into it as a co-viewing show and we had to get everybody to make it work. We definitely spent on the show, for sure. We’ve done some things in the past that are co-viewing and have done more of that since I’ve been there because there’s more co-viewing going on now than any other time. I have older sons and a younger daughter. When my older sons were young, they had TVs in their room. My daughter doesn’t have a TV in her room. That screen in the living room is really the screen for the whole family now. There’s just more co-viewing going on because of that.

Is the plan still to have part one of Prodigy air on linear before part two returns on the streamer?

Robbins: We will sneak the show on Nick, but it will live on Paramount+ in the first run and then cycle through to linear, to Nickelodeon. What we’ve been able to see with our content that’s premiered on Paramount+ first is that it’s doing really well there. Then when it comes to linear, it gets a boost. That flywheel seems to be working. It’s like one plus one is really making three.

How much do you hope that the Prodigy viewer checks out the other Trek library titles, or part of the Kurtzman Universe, after they’re done viewing Prodigy?

Kurtzman: We all believe more is more. We’ve built Star Trek to last and based on the premise that you need to feed a constant flow of material to viewers. For example, when the pandemic started, the numbers really spiked on Star Trek: Discovery because Picard had aired and people liked Picard and then it led them back to Discovery and vice versa. My hope is now that we will have five shows on the air, that once people get into the Star Trek universe and love it, it will lead them back and forth from show to show.

Robbins: That’s completely right. We’re seeing that same kind of consumption whether it’s Paw Patrol— the movie went on up on Paramount+ and the series on Paramount+ was up 40 percent or 50 percent since the movie landed there. People want more of what they love and they want it faster.

Brian, how do you still prioritize Nickelodeon when you’re going after the kids demo on Paramount+? Is the second window always going to be the plan for linear specifically when it comes to Star Trek?

Robbins: Yes. We’ve seen it with Kamp Koral, which we windowed that way. For this particular franchise, it’s the best way to window it. And we know that we’re getting more reach for it by doing it this way. That plays into the other plan of the show: This is a big opportunity for us to expand the consumer products business of the franchise with that reach and introduce things that you couldn’t do before because it wasn’t for this audience.

Right, and consumer products for successful kids programming is easily a billion-dollar business.

Robbins: All that stuff — products and marketing that comes with it — that all expands the universe too and brings more awareness and bigger audiences into the funnel.

How much more do you want to grow the Prodigy universe and expand into other younger-skewing animated fare? I’d imagine a Baby Spock show would probably do pretty well with a younger demo …

Kurtzman: I won’t spoil them, but we’ve talked about a bunch. If Prodigy is a success and works for everybody, then hopefully there will be lots of conversations about how to build it out from there, because it’s just going to make sense for the company.

Brian, how will you be measuring if Prodigy is a success? Are you looking at completion rate for kids? What’s the metric?

Robbins: The data is pretty obvious. We’re going to be patient because we think the show is fantastic and creatively just exceeds all expectations. I have no doubt that we’ll be doing more. Alex and I have talked about what the theatrical film version of this show is and the likes of that. We’re really excited. Ramsey and our Nick team could not be more thrilled to explore more.

So a Prodigy animated kids movie?

Robbins: I wouldn’t say kids. My bet would be that that’s a four-quadrant family movie.

For an animated Star Trek film?

Kurtzman: Potentially, yes. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is still one of the best movies over the past decade, animated or not. It’s just an unbelievable piece of artistry. I went with my whole family and another family and we all sat there with our jaws on the floor. Ultimately, Star Trek is about family, it’s about these giant universal themes. Getting to tell a story like that, especially given the level of cinema we’ve already brought to the television show, is a wonderful opportunity. It would thrill me to do that.

Robbins: Me as well. I had a similar experience with Spider-Verse where my daughter, who was 6 or 7 at the time, my late-teen sons and my wife and I all saw that movie together. That was the first experience of any film where we were all in.

Brian, part of your plans for Paramount+ is building out a movie slate that’s exclusive for the streamer and now you’re also running the Paramount film studio. Would a hypothetical Star Trek animated film be a theatrical release or a Paramount+ debut?

Robbins: To be honest, we’ve talked about it as a theatrical movie. I can’t lie, when I sat there at Comic-Con, I wished it was.

Brian, now that you’re also running Paramount Pictures, how does the knowledge of what’s working on Paramount+ translate to Star Trek? What are you looking at in terms of growth potential and where this franchise goes next?

Robbins: Where we go with the franchise next theatrically is crucial to the health of the overall franchise. There’s no doubt that big theatrical movies are the beacon that ignite franchises. We’re in it and I don’t really have anything to say because I’m waiting for the development to be delivered. I can’t wait to get going on it; we’re not there yet, but we need to get there soon.

Are you speaking specifically about the animated feature?

Robbins: I’m talking about what could be the next live-action movie.

Is that something that would involve Alex or is that a J.J. Abrams thing?

Robbins: We don’t know enough yet. We’re working on several fronts and obviously Alex is the key for the franchise [on Paramount+]. J.J. has been the keeper of the franchise on the film side. We hope that as a company that we do what’s right for the franchise altogether.

Are you getting scripts for a live-action feature from both camps?

Robbins: There’s a lot going on and I’m just going to leave it at that.

How does the data you have from Paramount+ impact what you want to do next with Trek?

Robbins: The idea is what do we do next for the franchise that’s going to work for the next five and 10 years, not just one movie at a time like Alex has talked about. That’s what we really have to figure out.

Kurtzman: That’s the ball game. It’s not just about the one thing that comes next. It’s about laying out a strategy for the next decade.

How far along are in planning are you?

Robbins: Well, I’ve been in a job for seven minutes, so not that far. (Laughs.)

Brian, does your streaming-first mentality compare with your theatrical vision?

Robbins: They’re not mutually exclusive. From Paramount Pictures’ point of view, if you look at our slate for the next 18 months, it’s just big theatrical movie after big theatrical movie, after big theatrical movie. Whether that’s Top Gun or Transformers or Mission Impossible or the Quiet Place sequel or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles that’s coming the following year. Those are movies that are meant for a big theatrical experience and I have no doubt that people are going to be lined up to see those movies. That said, there’s going to be other movies that we make for streaming directly. That’s OK because we all know that not every consumer is going to see every movie they want to see in the theater, nor is every consumer going to watch everything they want to see on streaming. At the end of the day, I think what the consumer really wants is choice and we’re going to listen to them and figure out what’s the best window for each piece of content.

As you look at that larger strategy, will you similarly experiment when it comes to theatrical windowing? Do you still want a movie like Mission Impossible 8 in theaters exclusively?

Robbins: Yes, 100 percent. It’s where you should have that experience, absolutely. Now, if you don’t go, eventually it’s going to come downstream and get to you on your couch, if that’s what you choose to do. Probably those windows are much quicker than they were several years ago.

The new range of detailed action figures and play sets will be based on Star Trek Universe and the new animated Star Trek: Prodigy series.


Bandai UK is boldly going into the European and Mexican toy markets as the distributor of a new range of Star Trek licensed toys and collectibles.

The initial phase of the three-way collaboration between Bandai UK, ViacomCBS Consumer Products, and Playmates, will see an extensive range introduced in the UK, ROI, France, Benelux, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Iberia, Italy and Mexico for the AW22 period.

The range of highly detailed action figures and play sets, which is still in development, will be based on both the classic Star Trek Universe, and the new, upcoming animated Star Trek: Prodigy series launching on ViacomCBS’s streaming service, Paramount+.

Nic Aldridge, Managing Director (MD), Bandai UK, said the company was “really excited” to be working with ViacomCBS and Playmates on such a classic, and iconic, brand.

Why Star Trek: Prodigy's Music Sounds Just Like JJ Abrams' Movies

There are good reasons why Star Trek: Prodigy's exciting musical score sounds very similar to the orchestral themes of J.J. Abrams'Star Trek movies. Star Trek: Prodigy stars Kate Mulgrew, who returns as the hologram of Captain Kathryn Janeway. The Janeway hologram mentors an all-new and eclectic group of young alien rebels who find a Starfleet ship, the USS Protostar, and use it to escape their brutal enslavement in the Delta Quadrant. Star Trek: Prodigy is a joint production by Nickelodeon and Paramount+ aimed at young audiences but the animated series is enjoyable for Star Trek fans of all ages.

Star Trek: Prodigy and the rest of the growing lineup of new Star Trek shows on Paramount+ wouldn't be possible without the success of J.J. Abrams'Star Trek movies. The franchise was dormant after Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled in 2005, but Abrams' breathed new life into Star Trek with his 2009 reboot film starring Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto as a younger Captain James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock. Set in the alternate Kelvin timeline, Star Trek 2009 turned the classic tropes and iconography of Gene Roddenberry's 1960s TV series into a big-budget modern blockbuster with spectacular visual effects. Star Trek was a global hit that reinvigorated the franchise and spawned two sequels, 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness and 2016's Star Trek Beyond, the latter directed by Justin Lin. However, one of the secrets to J.J. Abrams'Star Trek success is the spectacular score composed by Academy Award winner Michael Giacchino.

Michael Giacchino returned to Star Trek and composed the main title theme for Star Trek: Prodigy while Nami Melumad composes the episodic scores. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Giacchino's Star Trek: Prodigy theme sounds remarkably similar to his music for J.J. Abrams'Star Trek movies. There are similar beats that build momentum throughout Star Trek: Prodigy's exciting action sequences and the score crescendos when Dal (Brett Gray), Gwyn (Ella Purnell), Zero (Angus Imrie) and the other young rebels find and launch the USS Protostar are a musical echo to Kirk and Spock's breakneck adventures aboard the Starship Enterprise. In Star Trek: Prodigy, Giacchino and Melumad's music follows Michael's personal belief that the score is another character in the film who 'speaks' to the audience and guides them on how to feel as the heroes fight evil villains in outer space.

It's evident in Star Trek: Prodigy's premiere episode "Lost & Found" that Michael Giacchino was the right choice to compose the series' theme. Prodigy has thematic similarities to J.J. Abrams'Star Trek 2009: both projects are about a young crew of neophytes who take over a starship against impossible odds. In Star Trek 2009, Kirk led a crew of cadets fresh out of Starfleet Academy who had to rise to the occasion and save Earth from the time-traveling Romulan, Nero (Eric Bana). Star Trek: Prodigy's young alien heroes are even less skilled; having come from a mining planet in the Delta Quadrant, Dal, Gwyn, and the others have never even heard of the United Federation of Planets. But their adventures are just as fast-paced and energetic as Kirk's exploits in J.J. Abrams'Star Trek trilogy.

Star Trek scores are a vital component of every Star Trek movie and TV series, all of which have memorable themes that are beloved by Trekkers. Jerry Goldsmith's score for Star Trek: The Motion Picture is one of the all-time great science fiction compositions and it later became the theme of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Michael Giacchino's Star Trek 2009 theme succeeded at the daunting task of creating a sweeping new sound to accompany the Starship Enterprise while also incorporating the nostalgia of Alexander Courage's original Star Trek theme from 1966. With Star Trek: Prodigy, Michael Giacchino crafted a score worthy of the next generation of Star Trek heroes (and their new younger audience) that ideally harkens to the best parts of his Star Trek 2009 music.
