CBS All Access Adds 'The Wild Thornberrys Movie', 'Nacho Libre'

CBS All Access, the soon-to-be rebranded streaming service from ViacomCBS, recently added two more fan-favorite Nickelodeon Movies to its programming library: The Wild Thornberrys Movie and Nacho Libre!, the former of which was added on Tuesday, January 26, 2021!

The Wild Thornberrys Movie


The Nickelodeon cartoon series The Wild Thornberrys gets its first feature-length animated film, directed by show creator Cathy Malkasian with a screenplay by Kate Boutilier (writer of Nickelodeon's Rugrats in Paris). The main character is 12-year-old Eliza Thornberry (voice of Lacey Chabert, Family Guy), a braces-and-glasses-wearing eccentric girl in an adventurous family of travelers. Due to an interaction with a shaman, she has been granted the special power of communication with animals, as long as she promises not to tell anyone about it. Her powers are challenged when her parents, Nigel (voice of Tim Curry, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Home Alone 2) and Marianne (voice of Jodi Carlisle, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters), decide to take the family on an African safari to make a nature documentary. Also along for the trip is snobby sister Debbie (voice of Danielle Harris, Free Willy), feral youngster Donnie (voice of Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers), and pet chimpanzee Darwin (voice of Tom Kane, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron, Boy Genius, The X's, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Korra, Angry Beavers, and Duckman). After her new Cheetah cub friend is stolen by poachers, Eliza is determined to get involved. However, the stuffy Thornberry grandparents get in the way by sending her to boarding school. It's up to Eliza and Darwin to defeat the poachers and save the cub. Also featuring the voice talents of Brenda Blethyn (Vera) and Lynn Redgrave (Gods and Monsters). 2002 | 85min | PG.

Nacho Libre


Jack Black is at his comic best as Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery that can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador "Nacho Libre" to earn money for the monastery -- not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun Sister Encarnacion (Ana de la Reguera). 2006 | 92min | PG.

New PAW Patrol Pup Rex Rolls In For Dino-riffic Rescue Mission

Get ready for a PAW Patrol event of prehistoric proportions when PAW Patrol Dino Rescue, premieres Friday, 6 November at 5pm (AEST) on Nick Jr. Australia!


The new special will see PAW Patrol travel to Dino Land where they will meet new pup, and palaeontologist (aka dinosaur expert), Rex, a Bernese Mountain Dog who remains unstoppable even while confined to his wheelchair.

With brand-new rugged Dino Rescue gear, heavy-duty vehicles and tools, the pups are ready for action-packed prehistoric rescue missions in a lost world full of dinosaurs.

The premiere episode, "Dino Rescue: Pups and the Lost Dino Eggs", sets the scene for what will become an exciting new series of missions for PAW Patrol. It all begins at the beach where the PAW Patrol pups are having fun before Ryder rallies them to the Lookout to meet a new PAW Patrol member, Rex. Rex speeds in, in his wheelchair to greet the pups and invites them to his home, Dino Wilds.


In the second special episode, "Dino Rescue: Pups Save a Pterodactyl", Maverick the daredevil Pterodactyl takes a tumble and hurts his wing, luckily the pups are there for a sky-high Dino Rescue! Then in "Dino Rescue: Pups and the Big Rumble", a volcano is erupting, threatening the Dino Wilds! It’s all paws on deck for a massive Dino Rescue!’

The Dino Rescue theme is being meticulously integrated into the PAW Patrol world, staying true to the storylines and characters while exploring new landscapes and rescues. The attention to detail will transcend to the toys, with new innovative features and inspiring transformations!

Meet Rex


Rex is a Bernese Mountain Dog who is confined to a wheelchair. He lives in Dino Wilds and knows everything there is to know about dinosaurs. He is extremely determined and doesn’t let anything slow him down. Rex has a blue and lime green vehicle with stegosaurus plates that has a ramp that allows Rex to roll in and out with ease.

ViacomCBS Networks Int'l Launches Green Hours Employee Wellbeing Initiative

With 2021 not quite living up to the hype, ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) has launched a Green Hours initiative for employees.


For a 60-minute window, VCNI staff can now swap an hour of screen-time for a wellbeing activity that brings them joy. Time can be spent exercising, reading, meditating, and more.

Green Hours is all part of VCNI's continued efforts to ensure that employee wellbeing comes first.

"In order to make this work we have to ensure alll employees are supported. Building a culture of support and understanding. These are not normal times," added Wincie Knight, Vice President (VP) of global inclusion strategy, VCNI on LinkedIn.

PAW Patrol, Dora the Explorer, James Corden and More Set Course for Paramount Mountain in Paramount+ Launch Campaign

ViacomCBS is set to launch its highly anticipated streaming service, Paramount+ on Thursday, March 4, 2021. A rebrand of the current CBS All Access, the digital subscription video on-demand (SVOD) and live streaming service will combine CBS’ network programming via its 150-plus local affiliates, including NFL games, with a menu of original series, catch-up viewing and library shows with dedicated hubs for ViacomCBS’ core cable properties including Nickelodeon, MTV, BET and Comedy Central, for a total of some 30,000 titles.


To promote the debut of Paramount+, ViacomCBS has launched "Paramount Mountain", a new advertising campaign in the style of a David Attenborough documentary starring featuring talent and characters from the ViacomCBS portfolio, such as Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer and PAW Patrol and CBS late-night host James Corden - who had a guest role earlier in his acting career on Nickelodeon UK's Renford Rejects in the '90s, playing "Razor 1" - on a journey to reach “Paramount Mountain.”

The ad campaign, which combines animation and live-action aims to make Paramount+ stand out by promoting its range of content, including live sports, news, movies and TV shows.

The first ad in the “Paramount Mountain” ad campaign features PAW Patrol's Chase and Skye along with Dora the Explorer and James Corden riding on a snowmobile. Other notables include Star Trek: Strange New Worlds characters Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck) and Gayle King, Beavis & Butthead and Jeff Probst, as well as Jersey Shore's Snooki:


The David Attenborough-type narrator, who sounds like a lot like former Doctor Who actor Tom Baker, then reveals what types of characters viewers can expect on the Paramount+ service, listing off, "World travelers... world champions... and also, Snooki, of the Jersey Shore." At that point, the real Snooki appears on screen in a fur jacket and notes, "This sucks. I'm too hungover for this." The video ends with the promise that a variety of live sports, breaking news and a mountain of entertainment will also be available.

Dora the Explorer takes center stage as the leader in the second advert, which sees the heroine enlists the help of her trusty Map - although fellow traveller Coach William Cowher tries to one-up her by pretending to have a Talking Clipboard! Joining Dora and Cowher is DJ Khaled and Blue Blood's Tom Selleck:


The "Paramount Mountain" campaign be a major part of the AFC Championship and the Super Bowl, which air on CBS, in which a series of ads in and bookended by the games will feature.

The broader ad campaign will total more than 6,000 spots airing across the company’s TV networks, which also include Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, CMT and Comedy Central. The campaign will use promotional inventory reserved for so-called house ads instead of commercial ad time sold to other marketers.

The extensive TV effort will be complemented by ads running on ViacomCBS’ digital platforms, such as the free streaming service Pluto TV, and social channels.

One of the top priorities for ViacomCBS following the merger was to establish a system for companywide marketing efforts making use of an expanded portfolio of assets. This included creating a group of 17 top marketing executives overseeing a committee of 65 employees, including media planners and social-media staffers, meeting regularly. Making use of owned assets has become a familiar model for the streaming services of media conglomerates as they try to take on the likes of Netflix, which just topped 200 million subscribers.

Set to launch in the U.S. and Canada on March 4, Paramount+ will feature original content as well as shows from CBS and other broadcast and cable networks such as Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., MTV, Comedy Central, BET, and Paramount Network. Showtime and Noggin, the sister streaming services to CBS All Access, will continue to operate separately from Paramount+, although programming from the latter will also be available on Paramount+. Some Showtime-branded originals will be ticketed for the new service and some form of bundling is likely down the line. There is currently no word on whether NickHits will continue.

In addition, the company has also revealed the new slate of original series that are currently being in development under Paramount+. This includes: a new spy drama series titled Lioness which hails from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan: a miniseries titled The Offer which centers around the making of the iconic crime drama The Godfather; and an iCarly revival series, with most of the shows original cast.

They join the previously announced SpongeBob SquarePants spin-off Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, and SpongeBob movie Sponge on the Run.

ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish told Wall Street analysts last May that the streaming platform would be getting a rebranding that will also expand internationally over the next 12 months. After the quarterly earnings call, the service began its updating by adding over 100 films from the Paramount vault including the Star Trek franchise, The Godfather, Terms of Endearment and An Inconvenient Truth.

Other networks set to have programming debut on the platform include Nickelodeon, Smithsonian and the Paramount Network and a select number of specials and series from BET, which launched its own streaming service in September entitled BET+.

As of the end of March, CBS All Access and Showtime together had 13.5 million subscribers, which was a 50% increase from the same quarter last year, with general streaming revenue also rising 50% in the quarter to $471 million, estimated to stem from more viewers quarantining and looking for a variety of programming.


ViacomCBS will also bring Paramount+ to international markets with initial debuts in Latin America on March 4, 2021; the Nordics on March 25, 2021; and Australia in mid-2021. The CBS All Access service in Canada will be rebranded to Paramount+ on March 4, 2021, and an expanded offering will be available later in the year.

There is currently no word whether there are plans to launch Paramount+ in the U.K.

While prices for Paramount+ have yet to be revealed, CBS All Access currently offers two pricing tiers: one charges $5.99 a month for access to its library with limited commercials played during programming and another costs $9.99 a month with no ads.

Nickelodeon to Premiere 'Spyders' in Latin America and Brazil in February 2021

Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) and Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil) will premiere Nickelodeon Spyders, Nickelodeon International's brand new comic action-adventure series in February 2021! The series follows the adventures of three siblings who discover that their parents are undercover spies for an environmental protection agency, and decide to also become spies in order to help them in secret.


Nickelodeon Spyders will premiere on Nickelodeon in Brazil on Monday 8th February 2021 at 19:00.

​"While spending a summer-long family vacation by the lake, siblings Tommy, Nikki, and Daniel Fisher discover that their seemingly boring parents are actually daring undercover spies, who are chasing a devious villain aiming to dry up the country's water supply. When the siblings realize their parents' mission is in jeopardy, they form a secret task force called THE SPYDERS in order to help them out. Tommy, 12, a cute, irresistible goofball; Nikki, 15, a well-meaning but impetuous leader, and Daniel, 16, a sedentary, anxiety-ridden computer nerd, use their brains, charm, audacity and unbridled enthusiasm to outwit and outsmart the villain, who has so far eluded their parents. Will the untrained, blundering Spyders succeed where mom and dad failed?"

Spyders (originally titled The Covurts) focuses on Anna and Noah Fisher, (portrayed by Nati Kluger and Kobi Maimon (The Greenhouse), respectively) highly highly skilled undercover agents who work for a ECCO – Environmental Counter Crime Organization, and are tasked with fighting criminals who endanger nature or the environment. Little do they know that their three kids – Daniel (16; played by Amit Hechter, Dog House), Nikki (15; played by Kim Or Azulay) and Tommy (12; portrayed by Yonathan Gottlieb, Dog House, Forever) – have discovered their secret occupation and have formed a task force of their own, named Spyders.

Nickelodeon's Spyders is the first original co-production between Nickelodeon International and Israeli Nutz Productions—the subsidiary production arm of Ananey Communications Group—together with Israeli cable network HOT.

Nickelodeon has ordered 40 x 22-minute episodes, divided into two seasons, which will be distributed to Nickelodeon's international audiences spanning 170+ countries and territories via the brand’s more than 100 channels and branded blocks. The series made its world debut on TeenNick Israel on Wednesday 18th March 2020.

Spyders is created by Michal Cooper Keren, Tom Riles, David Guest and Patrick Quinn. The head writer is Israeli screenwriter Michal Cooper Keren, the creator of Nickelodeon Israel's Spell Keepers. The series is an original co-production between Nickelodeon International, Nutz Productions and Ananey Communications Group.

The series commenced filming in Israel during summer 2019 and wrapped in December the same year.

“After a long history of collaboration with Ananey, we are so excited to kick off our first co-production together with our partners in Israel,” said Nina Hahn, the Senior Vice President (SVP) of International Production and Development for Nickelodeon, when the show was first announced at global TV and digital content market MIPTV in April 2018. “We can’t wait for young fans around the world to meet The Spyders!”

Orly Atlas-Katz, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) OF Ananey Communications said, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Nickelodeon International. I am certain that with their vast experience in content for kids, HOT's programming expertise and our high-end productions abilities, this show will be something to look forward to."

Ananey is an Israeli content producer and pay-TV provider that serves as the Israeli licensor of several of Viacom’s biggest brands, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV, and produces both local and international original content.

Under the partnership, Nickelodeon has become Israel's No. 1 children's channel and, alongside Nick Jr., reaches 49 percent of the youth audience, due in large part to Ananey’s original local productions for kids and teens.

The greenlight of The Spyders comes on the heels of Viacom purchasing a minority stake in Ananey Communications Group in 2017.

Nickelodeon Spyders is the second series that originated on Nickelodeon Israel to air on Nick UK, following The Greenhouse in 2014 which was filmed in Hebrew and dubbed into English. The series was later remade under the title Greenhouse Academy for Netflix.

Nutz entered a co-pro deal with Bunim/Murray Productions’ (Nickelodeon's The Crystal Maze) new BMP Kids division on the youth prank show Gotcha, which bowed on Nick Israel last December. Other popular Nutz series currently airing on Nick Israel include Spell Keepers, Bed & Biscuit (Dog House) and The Hood.

Nickelodeon UK & Ireland will be premiering Side Hustle, Nickelodeon's brand-new live-action buddy comedy starring social media sensations and real-life best friends, Jules LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels on Monday 22nd February 2021!

Side Hustle follows best friends, smart and sarcastic Lex (LeBlanc) and confident and tough Presley (Bartels), as they devise a plan to make money when fireworks accidentally destroy a boat belonging to the dad of their quirky friend and neighbor, Munchy (Isaiah Crews). Created and executive produced by Dave Malkoff (Henry Danger, Sam & Cat, Victorious) and shot in front of a live studio audience, Side Hustle season one (20 half-hour episodes) is being shot in Los Angeles.


Forced to come up with creative ways to earn money to pay for the damages, Lex, Presley and Munchy enlist the help of Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother, Fisher (Mitchell Berg), who creates an app to connect with people looking for help with small jobs, and Munchy’s bossy older brother Jaget (Jacques Chevelle), who makes sure they keep up with the payments.

“Annie and Jayden are two massively talented stars who kids adore, and we think our audience is going to love seeing them in their own show on Nick,” said Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. “Side Hustle is a new take on the classic buddy comedy, full of wild and hilarious adventures for our unique cast of characters.”

In the premiere episode, “Start Hustling” (#101), the kids get into a jam after accidentally setting a boat on fire. Needing money, they get a job as living mannequins at a fancy store. The kids are excited until they discover they’ll be modeling itchy wool outfits. After spending hours itching and posing, they hatch a plan to close the store early.


LeBlanc is an actress and singer who first came to social prominence in her family’s YouTube channel, “Bratayley.” She has since amassed over 27 million followers across her own social media platforms, and can be seen starring in Brat’s hit YouTube series Chicken Girls and A Girl Named Jo, and the YouTube Red Originals series We Are Savvy. As a singer LeBlanc’s had six songs in the Top Ten iTunes Pop charts, and two Top 50 Billboard Chart hits. She recently won “Choice Music Web Star” at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards, “Muser of the Year” at the 2018 Shorty Awards, and is currently nominated for “Favorite Female Social Star” at the 2020 Kids’ Choice Awards. In 2019, LeBlanc joined the Nickelodeon family starring in Annie vs. Hayley, a digital competition show with her younger sister Hayley, and co-hosted Camp Nick alongside Bartels.

Bartels is a singer, actress and dancer who has made a name for herself both on camera and on the stage. Having written and arranged every song she’s released, she debuted her first EP titled “What Really Matters?” last year and released her most recent single “Gameboy” earlier this month. She’s currently on tour opening for pop rock band Echosmith across the U.S., and she went out on a European tour with English singing duo Max & Harvey in 2019. She has a following of almost 12 million across her social media platforms, as well as over 1.6 billion likes on TikTok. On screen, Bartels has played a recurring role Disney Channel’s Coop & Cami Ask the World and lead in the films To The Beat! and its’ upcoming sequel, To The Beat! Back 2 School. She can also be seen in episodes of Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, Showtime’s Kidding and CBS’s Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

LeBlanc and Bartels co-hosted Nickelodeon's virtually-produced Group Chat during summer 2020, which ranked as the number-one unscripted live-action show on cable with kids 6-11 in the second quarter of 2020. Bartels later teamed up with social media star Brent Rivera for season two, which aired during Fall 2020 on Nick. Group Chat is currently airing on Nick UK & Eire.

John Beck & Ron Hart (Knight Squad, Fuller House, Liv and Maddie) serve as executive producers and showrunners. Production of Side Hustle for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Omar Camacho serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

Europe - Nickelodeon is inviting viewers into the Group Chat with the brand-new virtually produced entertainment series, premiering Monday 8th March 2021 at 11:40 Uhr in Germany (Deutschland) and at 14:50 Uhr in Austria (Österreich) and Switzerland (Schweiz)!

The series is a video chat rundown of the week’s latest hot topics, taken directly from what kids love and are talking about across social media.

Following launch, new episodes of Group Chat will continue to air weekdays at 11:40 Uhr in Deutschland and at 14:50 Uhr in Österreich and Schweiz.

Group Chat (15 episodes) is a new pop culture talk show. Each episode will also feature fan-favorite stars, as they talk about the hottest trend topics of the week based on what kids are currently discussing across social media, play games and compete in challenges--all via video chat.

The series is divided into two: Part one is hosted by Jules LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels, co-stars of Nickelodeon’s Side Hustle, with special appearances by Hayley LeBlanc (Mani). Part two is hosted by social media star Brent Rivera and Jayden Bartels.

Candyrific, Jelly Belly Unveil ‘Baby Shark’ Fans

CandyRific has announced its new Pinkfong “Baby Shark” Fanimation Fans, filled with Jelly Belly organic jellybeans!


CandyRific recently announced its Baby Shark Light & Sound Wands, which was its first release in collaboration with The Jelly Belly Candy Company and their Jelly Belly organic jellybeans. Wand’s are filled with Jelly Belly jellybeans, including Baby Shark, Mommy Shark and Daddy Shark versions. At the push of a button, each unit plays the Baby Shark song while lights flash on and off, CandyRific reports, noting more items bearing the licenses are in the works.

Around the same time, the new animated series, Baby Shark’s Big Show!, kicked-off with a 30-minute holiday special, “Baby Shark’s Big Fishmas Special” ("All I want for Fishmas") on Dec. 11 on Nickelodeon. The series will fully premiere on Nickelodeon in March 2021, followed by a global rollout.

In addition to Nickelodeon and SmartStudy’s partnership to produce Baby Shark’s Big Show!, ViacomCBS Consumer Products (VCP) is managing consumer products licensing worldwide, excluding China, Korea and Southeast Asia, for the Baby Shark property.

The display cases with the new fans are set to ship Sunday, February 21, 2021.

Kenan Thompson to Host Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2021

Kenan Thompson has announced that he'll be hosting the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2021!


The Nickelodeon legend, best known for his roles on beloved Nickelodeon comedies All That, Good Burger and Kenan & Kel, as well as for being the longest serving cast member on Saturday Night Live) made the announcement on the You Already Know podcast, which you check out below! (The video does contain swearing, so viewer discretion is advised; Kenan makes the announcement at around the 1:34 mark):


Kenan is currently executive producing Nickelodeon's All That revival, along with his former Nick co-star Kel Mitchell, and is about to launch he brand new NBC, Kenan, premiering at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 16.

Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards 2021, is set to air mid-March on Nickelodeon.

Not much is currently known about Nickelodeon's 2021 Kids' Choice Awards, including how Nickelodeon will be hosting this year's awards ceremony.

In March 2020, due to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, Nickelodeon was forced to postpone Kids’ Choice Awards 2020, which, set to be hosted by Chance the Rapper, was set to take place on Sunday, March 22, at the Forum in Inglewood, California. Rather than canceling the network's tentpole event, Nickelodeon opted for a virtually-produced filmed-at-home special, Kids' Choice Awards 2020: Celebrate Together, which was hosted by Nickelodeon alum Victoria Justice (Zoey 101, Victorious, Fun Size), and saw winners receive their blimps at home.

Although the show was a lot more intimate than viewers were used to, the show still managed to feature special guests and lots of slime.

Although we are slowly but surely returning to "normal", we still have a long way to go before we can attend events like we used to, with most tours and events not scheduled to start up again until the middle of next year. Taking most things into consideration, below are three ways that Nickelodeon could host Kids' Choice Awards 2021.

The Studio Option: In the past few months, Nickelodeon in Brazil and Mexico have held localised versions of Kids' Choice Awards. Like the U.S./Global version, Nick's localised KCA events are usually held in big arenas in front of thousands of fans. However, this year, Nickelodeon Brazil and Nickelodeon Mexico drastically scaled down their KCAs, hosting them in a studio rather than arena with much smaller sets and with no audience. To make sure only a limited number of people were in close contact with each other, each show featured a mix of winners accepting their blimps in person and via the internet. Although much smaller, each event still managed to feature celebrity guests - in person and virtually - as well as big slime stunts. I would say that, the way things are going, this is probably the best option for the 2021 Kids' Choice Awards if Nickelodeon still wants to host them in March/April 2021. The only thing missing from the studio versions of the Kids' Choice Awards were live audiences. However, this could be remedied by Nickelodeon running a contest to allow viewers to attend the awards virtually - Britain's Got Talent recently featured 'virtual audiences', and yes, whilst looking like something from Black Mirror, it did sort of bring some normalcy back.

The Virtual Option: As previously mentioned, Nickelodeon postponed their annual slimefest, shifting it to a 'filmed-at-home' special instead, based on Nickelodeon in Germany, Switzerland and Austria's Nickelodeon Kids‘ Choice Awards 2020: Deutschland, Österreich, Schweiz. This was a ratings success for Nickelodeon, and whilst we are still slowly getting back to normal, could be the option that Nick goes with.

The Postponement Option: Like I mentioned above, a lot of events aren't planning to start up again until mid-2021. If Nickelodeon wants to have a big show with a large live audience, the network could be planning to postpone the event until later in the year. However, at the moment, there is no certainly of how things will be next year. With the virus coming back in waves, it's hard to pin-point a perfect date to have it. There are a few vaccines coming onto market which hopefully will help, but this all depends on how long their efficiently lasts, how widely available they are and how many people take them.

In my opinion, we probably won't be seeing a "normal"Kids' Choice Awards ceremony until 2022, so there's either a good chance we'll either see the studio option or virtual option for KCA 2021.

All three options also apply to Nickelodeon SlimeFest. Like KCA 2020, SlimeFest 2020 was also canceled. There are plans to host SlimeFest again in 2021, however, this all depends on how safe it is to do so. This could see Nickelodeon follow in Nickelodeon Italy's footsteps by hosting an in-studio SlimeFest festival, which would then air on Nickelodeon.

These are just my thoughts. The finalized version of Kids’ Choice Awards 2021 could look totally different than the options I've listed above. Tell me what you think in the comments below or let me know on social media!

Avatar: The Last Airbender's Core Philosophy Perfectly Explains Its Complex Characters

Avatar: The Last Airbender was guided by a core philosophy that people aren't "good" or "evil," but are either "in balance" or "out of balance."


Avatar: The Last Airbender is well known for its complex characters, which are perfectly explained by a core philosophy of the show. Avatar, which originally aired on Nickelodeon, is surprisingly complex and covers mature themes. Despite the fact that Avatar is rated TV-Y7-FV, war, death, and genocide are integral elements of the plot. But it’s the characters that are the real heart of Avatar. The main cast of Avatar is introduced early on in season 1, episode 1, “The Boy In The Iceberg.” Katara, Sokka, Aang, Zuko, and Iroh are all established by the end of the pilot. At least three other characters who are introduced after the pilot could also be considered part of the main cast: Toph, Azula, and Suki.

Of these eight characters, each has a clear arc and journey. More importantly, their arcs make sense because the characters have clear goals guided by their complex personalities. Even Azula, who grows more unhinged and violent as the show continues, has a clearly defined arc. Azula changes dramatically from her first appearance to her last. Azula becomes more and more paranoid and isolated from her family, and eventually, Mei and Ty-Lee also leave when they realize Azula would not hesitate to kill them. This confirms Azula's hidden fear of abandonment and drives her into deeper paranoia. Yet, all of Avatar's characters are at times unpredictable in very human ways, including Azula. This is because of the show’s core philosophy.

In Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Art of the Animated Series, showrunners Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino write that a “core philosophy of the series” is that “people aren’t good or evil, but are either in balance or out of balance.” Each of Avatar's characters perfectly embodies this philosophy because the “good” characters don’t always do the “right” thing and the “evil” characters don’t always do the “wrong” thing. Every character can be seen in varying degrees of "balance."

As the Avatar, Aang most clearly symbolizes the importance of balance. To master all four elements and bring balance to the world, Aang is first required to achieve balance within himself. However, Aang is still a flawed human. Aang is deeply spiritual, a devout pacifist, and a naturally “balanced” character, but even Aang kills a buzzard wasp in an act of revenge. At the time, Aang was likely ‘out of balance’ because he was overcome with emotion and reacted without first reflecting. Aang has several other experiences throughout the series that show his tendency to react with emotion. However, in the Avatar finale, Aang becomes a fully realized Avatar after achieving balance. Because of this, Aang restrains himself from killing Fire Lord Ozai and uses energybending to take away Ozai’s firebending instead.


Ozai’s own brother, Iroh, is likely the most balanced character from Avatar’s beginning to end, but Zuko is widely regarded as the most compelling character in Avatar because of his redemption arc. At the beginning of the series, Zuko is hellbent on destroying the Avatar to restore his honor and please his father. But, as Zuko learns and grows, he begins to make outward choices that reflect his inner change. This is illustrated even more clearly when Zuko loses his firebending abilities and learns that life and energy must exist to balance fire’s destructive and violent potential. Zuko was completely out of balance when his sole purpose was domination and revenge, but then Zuko began to see the Fire Nation for what it was and realized that he needed the Avatar to help him restore balance.

When viewing Avatar’s characters through the lens of “in balance” or “out of balance,” they become even more relatable and realistic. Many children’s shows, or rather film and television in general, feature characters who neatly fit into a label of “good” or “evil,” but Avatar’s characters contain multitudes. From its very beginning, Avatar has spoken to viewers in a way that few other shows have because, underneath the mythical setting and characters’ supernatural abilities, Avatar: The Last Airbender teaches deeply poignant lessons about the complexities, contradictions, and balance within every person.

Avatar: The Last Airbender: Why There Are Only 4 Elements, and Not 5

Avatar: The Last Airbender was partly inspired by ancient Chinese culture, which had a five-element philosophy - so why does Avatar only have four?


The premise of Avatar: The Last Airbender is based on the existence of four natural elements, but why only four? In Avatar, the world is divided into four separate nations based on four elements: earth, water, fire, and air. Within each of these nations, some unique people have supernatural bending abilities that allow them to manipulate their respective elements. The pilot episode of the series lays this premise outright from the beginning, but the reason that there are only four elements is not explained within the show.

Of course, in Avatar, there are other elements that benders can control, but they all fall under the category of one of the four main elements. For example, earthbenders can learn metalbending, waterbenders can learn bloodbending, and firebenders can learn lightning bending. But what’s interesting is that one of these subskill elements exists as part of Wuxing (also written Wu-Hsing), an ancient Chinese philosophy – while air does not. The common English translation of Wuxing is Five Phases, referring to five natural elements: wood (mu), fire (huo), earth (tu), metal (jin), water (shui). Since so many other parts of Avatar were inspired by Chinese culture, why weren’t these five elements used in the show?


According to Bryan Konietzko in the book Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Art of the Animated Series, it was mostly due to simplicity, and the fact that the Five Phases philosophy is not the only element-based philosophy that exists in ancient Chinese culture. As Konietzko notes:

"People often assume the "four-element theory"... we brought to bending is exclusive to ancient Greece, and that in ancient China only a "five-element theory was used"… in our research we found the four-element theory was prevalent in ancient cultures all over the world, including ancient Buddhist teachings. While the five-element theory is interesting in its own right, we were attracted to the universality of the four simple elements."

Elemental theories indeed exist around the world – and have for thousands of years. While each culture has its own beliefs and history behind the elements (and slight variations as well as additions), the four elements featured in Avatar are frequently included in element-based philosophies. It’s also worth noting that Wuxing does not approach the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) with the same fixedness as Avatar. Wuxing represents ever-changing materials, thus it’s translated to English as Five Phases rather than Five Elements.

In the end, it makes a lot of sense that the showrunners made the choice they did. For one, including the element of air obviously changes the premise of the show dramatically. And including a fifth element would have meant including a fifth nation and respective bending ability, which (while certainly intriguing) might have overcomplicated a show directed at young children. Using only four elements allowed Avatar: The Last Airbender plenty of time to explore the intricacies of each culture and bending style within the show while honoring the real-life cultures that inspired them.

Dustin Diamond, ‘Screech’ on ‘Saved by the Bell,’ Passes Away, Aged 44

Dustin Diamond, the actor who portrayed lovable nerd Samuel “Screech” Powers across four incarnations of Saved by the Bell from 1988 to 2000, died Monday, February 1 after a three-week battle with carcinoma. He was 44. Diamond’s agent, Roger Paul, confirmed the actor’s death to Rolling Stone.

“He was diagnosed with this brutal, relentless form of malignant cancer only three weeks ago,” Paul said in a statement. “In that time, it managed to spread rapidly throughout his system; the only mercy it exhibited was its sharp and swift execution. Dustin did not suffer. He did not have to lie submerged in pain. For that, we are grateful.

“Dustin Diamond was a character in and of himself: an unpredictable spitfire who always left us shocked, but never left us bored,” Paul added. “We please ask that you give room for privacy to our team and Mr. Diamond’s family during this tragic time, as we grieve and remember the memories spent together. This loss is as much stinging as it is sudden.”

At age 11, Diamond landed the role of Screech on the pilot of Good Morning, Miss Bliss in 1988. In a unique twist, the character was both a hopeless dork and the best friend of the coolest kid in school, Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar). Good Morning, Miss Bliss lasted just one season before it was re-tooled as Saved by the Bell in 1989. Half the cast was let go, but Screech survived the transition and soon became a favorite of the young Saturday morning audience that quickly turned the show into a generational touchstone.

Saved by the Bell was never a show that strived for realism, and Screech was the most cartoon-like character. A typical Screech plot involved the character becoming psychic after being struck by lightning or creating a robot of incredible intelligence.

The character Screech was close friends with the entire Saved by the Bell gang on the show, but Diamond was a couple years younger than the others and said they rarely socialized when the cameras were off. Looking back as an adult, Diamond said they were very difficult years. “The hardest thing about being a child star giving up your childhood,” he told Oprah Winfrey in 2013. “You don’t get a childhood. You’re a professional and you need to learn your lines and practice. It was making sure you were the funniest and the best you can be because if you weren’t funny, you could be replaced.”

Diamond stayed with the show through the short-lived Saved by the Bell: The College Years show in 1993/94 and then revived the Screech character on Saved by the Bell: The New Class from 1994 to 2000 where he played a special assistant to Principal Belding.

Saved by the Bell and Saved by the Bell: The College Years received a resurgence in popularity when Nickelodeon UK aired both series in the mid-2000s.

Like many child stars, Diamond faced difficult times in adulthood. Typecast as Screech, he found it nearly impossible to find work. “I didn’t know what to do [when the show ended],” he said in 2013. “It was hard to get work that wasn’t Screech-clone stuff.”

To make money, he resorted to reality shows like Celebrity Fit Club and Celebrity Boxing 2 where he battled Ron “Horshack” Palillo from Welcome Back, Kotter. He also released a mature tape in 2006, though he later claimed a “stunt double” was used for the sex scenes. He later called it “the thing I’m most embarrassed about” in the Winfrey interview.

In 2009, Diamond released the tell-all book Behind the Bell where he portrayed his castmates in unflattering ways, though he later claimed the book was ghostwritten and the most salacious stories were completely untrue. Six years later, he served three months in jail after getting into a bar fight where a man was stabbed.

He wasn’t invited to take place in any of the Saved by the Bell reunions that have taken place in recent years, including the recent reboot on Peacock, but in 2016 he did sit down with Mario Lopez for an interview on Extra where they made peace.

“I want to put the tomfoolery and malarkey behind me… for that clean slate,” Diamond said. “Time for a change.”

Nickelodeon Benelux today announced the Dutch and Belgian nominees of Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2021, giving kids in both regions the chance to vote for their local favourites to win a coveted Orange Blimp!


The Dutch and Belgian winners of KCA 2021 will be announced during Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2021, airing on Nickelodeon Netherlands (Nederland) and Nickelodeon Flanders (Vlaanderen) on Sunday 14th March 2021 at 18:30.

In the U.S., the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2021, will air on Nickelodeon on Saturday, March 13 from 7:30 p.m. ET.

Voting for the Dutch and Belgian nominees of Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards 2021 will open on Wednesday 3rd February 2021. Kids will be available to vote for their favourite stars at nickelodeon.nl/kca and nickelodeon.be/kca.

Nickelodeon heeft vandaag de Nederlandse en Belgische genomineerden van de 2021 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards bekendgemaakt. Onder andere Eloise van Oranje, NikkieTutorials, Nienke Plas, Jamal Ben Saddik, Pommelien Thijs en Karen Damen maken kans op een felbegeerde award tijdens de internationale show. De 2021 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards worden tijdens de nacht van zaterdag op zondag om 01:30 uur uitgereikt vanuit Los Angeles (19:30 uur lokale tijd). De show is op zondagavond 14 maart om 18:30 uur te zien op Nickelodeon in Nederland en Belgie. 

Het is weer bijna tijd voor de Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards! Op zaterdagavond 13 maart kunnen miljoenen kinderen wereldwijd weer genieten van een show vol met de grootste sterren, bijzondere optredens, onvergetelijke momenten en heel veel slijm!

Daarnaast zijn ook dit jaar weer een reeks Nederlandse en Belgische sterren genomineerd voor een award. Eloise van Oranje, Nienke Plas, NikkieTutorials, Numidia en Rolf Sanchez maken kans om uitgeroepen te worden tot Favoriete Ster: Nederland. In de categorie Favoriete Ster: Belgie strijden Celine Dept & Michiel Callebaut, Jamal Ben Saddik, Karen Damen, Nora Gharib en Pommelien Thijs om de felbegeerde award. Daarnaast kunnen Belgian Crew, Bibi, Fource, Kwebbelkop en Spaze hun fans oproepen om massaal op hen te stemmen, want zij maken kans op de titel Beste Fan Squad: Nederland & Belgie.

De 2021 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards worden op zondagavond 14 maart om 18:30 uur uitgezonden op Nickelodeon in Nederland en Belgie. Fans kunnen vanaf woensdag 3 februari (Nederlandse tijd) stemmen op hun favoriete sterren. De optredende artiesten en de overige genomineerden worden later bekendgemaakt.
