Publisher HandyGames and developer Purple Lamp Studios will release SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, a remake of the cult favorite 2003 SpongeBob SquarePants video game for iOS via the Apple App Store and Android via Google Play on January 21 for $8.99 / 9,99 euro - without microtransactions or hidden paywalls, the companies announced.

Battle for Bikini Bottom is a 3D platformer from 2003, based on the hilarious antics of the titular sea sponge from Nickelodeon's hit TV show. It boasted gameplay similar to classic titles like Banjo-Kazooie, and was generally considered a cult classic for its success at emulating the madcap humor of the show.

The classic title garnered enough love from its fans to warrant a remake, which released in 2020. Battle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated rebuilt the game from the ground up, giving it better gameplay, restored cut content, a multiplayer mode, and drastically improved graphical quality. Fans adored the remake for letting them relive the experience from 2003.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated first launched for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG in June 2020.

The SpongeBob SquarePants effect: Why THQ Nordic is doubling down on licenses

CEO Klemens Kreuzer discusses the Purple Lamp acquisition and being part of the ever-expanding Embracer empire

The Embracer Group spent the best part of the last decade buying up a wide variety of development studios and games IP, culminating in November's announcement that it had purchased 13 companies -- the firm's biggest wave of acquisitions to date.

Among them was Purple Lamp Studios, the Vienna-based developer behind one of the group's bigger hits of 2020: SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, which launched in June. The team of 38 is now 100% owned by the game's publisher, THQ Nordic.

Given that Purple Lamp only began working with THQ Nordic in January 2018, it's clear the studio made quite the impression on its new owner, not only bringing the beloved SpongeBob game back to market but also assisting with the Early Access development of The Guild 3.

For THQ Nordic CEO Klemens Kreuzer, Purple Lamp's performance with the SpongeBob project made it an essential purchase.

"The team was familiar with working with these big licensor companies, and they showed it once again when we collaborated on SpongeBob, where you have Viacom and Nickelodeon people in the background," he says.

"What we liked about Purple Lamp is they have the passion to work on big licences and they're able to deal with those companies -- as you can imagine, some companies can be a bit picky because the IP is one of their major assets. They did the perfect job."

Kreuzer adds the deal was a "no brainer" because the opportunity arose at a time when THQ Nordic had decided to ramp up its efforts in developing and releasing licensed games, for which it needed a team with certain expertise.

"We could either make an offer to the Purple Lamp founders, or start a whole new studio, which takes time to set up and you need to be patient," he says. "Luckily, the team was fired up about joining us so we made the deal in a couple of weeks."

No figure for the acquisition has been disclosed, but Kreuzer describes it as "a good deal for the previous owners and a good deal for us." Purple Lamp is now hard at work on three projects: the ongoing development of The Guild 3, plus two unannounced licensed games.

The landscape for licensed video games was very different when Battle For Bikini Bottom first released in 2003. Tie-ins and adaptations were rife, with much of the biggest IP from the worlds of animation, TV and film appearing in video games on an annual basis.

This has changed a great deal in the last two decades -- as we covered with one prominent example last year -- as IP holders became more guarded with their franchises or turned to the more lucrative free-to-play market on mobile. Those that were still interested in traditional video games have also shifted towards longer projects with higher budgets, resulting in the likes of Insomniac's Spider-Man titles.

But THQ Nordic's current output harks back more to the early 2000s, and Kreuzer believes the reception to SpongeBob's remake proves there is demand for such titles.

"It was a fantastic success for us, with sales of more than one million units -- and I wouldn't be surprised if it reached two million one day," he says. "I think there's a market for those kind of games. The community was so full of joy.

"I think maybe in the licence business there has been a bit too much emphasis on free-to-play and the premium model was not so popular in the last five to ten years. But at THQ Nordic, we're not going for the super AAA stuff where we need millions and millions to be successful. We can do that with relatively low volumes, so that's why we think we can recreate the success we've had with SpongeBob with other licences in future. We're working on some of those right now."

Battle For Bikini Bottom is yet another example of titles tapping into nostalgia for past generations of games

It's not just the licence that drove the success of Battle For Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, but also the nostalgia it taps into. There is demand for games that hark back to a certain demographic's childhood, as has already been proven with the huge success of the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy and the ongoing popularity of Super Mario 3D All-Stars. Kreuzer reports this was a significant factor in SpongeBob's appeal, something that was clear to the publisher since the remake's announcement.

"You can see how emotional people are about these games, that they have good memories from their childhood and they really enjoy coming back to those places," he says.

But, he emphasises, THQ Nordic did not purchase Purple Lamp solely to develop remakes and remasters. While there are no details on the two licensed projects it's currently working on, Kreuzer indicates the team will be creating new games in the style of much older ones.

"Remakes will be part of their future projects, but they will also go for sequels based on licenses," he says. "I think the 3D action-adventure platformer genre has an endless life. It may not have been the focus for the past few years, but they're some of the most enjoyable games you can have just sitting at home on your couch, playing for 20 minutes or two hours. It's instant access, and it's fun. That's what gaming is about, entertaining people."

While THQ Nordic is now focusing more on licensed titles, it's certainly not neglecting original IP. One of the publisher's biggest titles of 2021, Biomutant, is due this quarter and is described by Kreuzer as "a release of great importance." The open-world adventure is dubbed a "post-apocalyptic Kung Fu fable," set in a world populated by anthropomorphic animals, and has been met with intrigue and anticipation since its announcement.

The game is one of 61 projects currently in development at THQ Nordic, of which only 21 have been announced so far. Kreuzer tells us the current pipeline takes the company up to Summer 2024, and is a mix of licensed, established and original IP.

Of the latest cohort of studios to be brought into the Embracer Group, Purple Lamp is the only one that falls under the ownership and responsibility of THQ Nordic. Most were either purchased by or now positioned under sister company Saber Interactive -- although Kreuzer notes this is only indicative of which opportunities each Embracer firm took rather than the signs of some grand strategy by the group.

"No pillar of the business is pushed into acquiring other businesses," he says. "It's up to us. I said to the Saber guys that they're M&A monsters because they're making so many acquisitions -- it's impressive.

"At THQ Nordic, we've done 42 acquisitions since 2011 -- a mix of assets, companies and deals where we just bought the IP. But in this case, it was suitable for us to only acquire this one target: Purple Lamp. We take things step-by-step. Whereas the Saber guys had a lot of opportunities, which they took."

THQ Nordic is, of course, on the lookout for other potential acquisitions -- "we have a few in mind that we'll start talking to," says Kreuzer -- although there's no specific type of company the publisher is hunting for at the moment. Most of its teams are dedicated to development -- 16 of the 20 business that come under THQ Nordic -- but the CEO is open to branching out.

"I wouldn't exclude [the possibility] that maybe one day we'll make a deal where a publishing entity out there would be a good fit for our THQ Nordic family," he says.

The success of SpongeBob SquarePants, plus its vast back catalogue, actually made THQ Nordic the biggest part of Embracer Group in the organisation's most recent financial results. Through July to September, the publisher made $69.5 million -- over $7 million more than Deep Silver, the usual leader.

THQ Nordic is usually outperformed by Deep Silver and its parent Koch Media, in part due to the higher profile AAA IP the former holds and the broader businesses operated by the latter, such as film distribution. Nevertheless, THQ Nordic remains a major pillar in the Embracer Group -- it is, after all, intrinsic to how the organisation started, with the group also originally called THQ Nordic.

You would be forgiven for thinking this places additional pressure on THQ Nordic -- and Deep Silver, by extension -- to continue delivering million-selling hits in order to drive growth for the whole group. But Kreuzer instead reports the group's structure gives each entity more freedom to organise its line-ups in a way that will most benefit Embracer as a whole.

"We were in the lucky position this time because we had a fantastic line-up in the first and second quarters with SpongeBob, Desperados, Destroy All Humans and Kingdom of Amalur: Re-Reckoning," he explains.

"Next year, it could be different. It could be that Deep Silver or Saber has a super line-up and they take the lead in terms of revenue. We're lucky to be part of a group where one entity or another takes the lead each quarter -- that relieves the pressure, because I can see Deep Silver or Saber has a good line-up so it means I can act a bit cooler regarding our releases and time them a bit better.

"We try to be in the top tier and we're working hard to be there -- not just once, like in the recent quarter, but in the year to come and the year after that."

ViacomCBS Int'l Studios Announces 'Kally's MashUp' TV Movie, VIS Kids Slate and New Brand Identity at Virtual NATPE Miami 2021 Event

ViacomCBS International Studios (VIS) today announced that the studio is producing a brand new movie based on Nickelodeon Latin America's (Latinoamérica) smash hit family comedy series, Kally's MashUp!


Titled A Very Kally's Birthday (working title), days before her birthday, Kally goes on an unexpected trip where she accidentally meets a celebrity musician. While she is having the time of her life, she will have to decide what to do with her heart.

A Very Kally's Birthday is based on the hugely successful series, Kally's Mashup. The made-for-tv-movie is written by Peter Barsocchini, whose credits include High School Musical and High School Musical 3 - Senior Year (2006-2020) and Adam Anders known for hits Glee (2009-2015), and most recently the Netflix original musical, The Prom (2020) as well as the upcoming Road to Bethlehem (2021). Anders will also serve as Executive Music Producer for the movie overseeing its musical score.

A Very Kally's Birthday is locally titled ¡El Cumpleaños! in Latin American countries.

"Kally’s Mashup - ¡El Cumpleaños! (título a confirmar) – Días antes de su cumpleaños Kally emprende un inesperado viaje en el que accidentalmente conoce un famoso cantante. Mientras se encuentra pasando el mejor momento de su vida, Kally se verá en una encrucijada amorosa y tendrá que decidir qué hacer con su corazón. Kally’s MashUp is inspired by the real-life musical journey of Glee’s executive musical producer, Adam Anders. It follows the adventures of Kally, a young musical prodigy who tries to balance her life as a piano virtuoso and a regular girl when she moves from a small town to the most prestigious music university in the country. Although everyone thinks she was born to be a classical piano player, her true dream and passion is to be a pop star. Kally’s MashUp features original songs composed by Anders, his wife Nikki Anders, and longtime collaborator Peer Astrom. Anders serves as executive producer for the show and oversees all the music featured in the series.

Kally's MashUp is co-produced by Nick LatAm, Anders Media and 360 Powwow, with Anders and Powwow CEO Daniel Gutman executive producing, and airs regularly on Nickelodeon Latinoamérica, Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil) as well as the Telefe network.

Following its success, Nickelodeon Latinoamérica recently ordered more new episodes. Kally's MashUp season two (45×60-minute episodes) premiered in February 2019 to similar acclaim.

A line of consumer products inspired by the popular series is now available. "Kally's MashUp: La música: banda sonora original de la serie de TV", a album featuring 18 songs from the hit TV show, was released on Friday 9th March 2018 by Deep Well Records, under exclusive license to Sony Music Entertainment US Latin LLC. ViacomCBS International Studios announced the news today (Jan. 21) the Virtual NATPE Miami 2021 event, where the studio also unveiled more its diverse new slate of content and confirmed the expansion of its business globally into the development and production of new formats such as documentaries, made-for-streaming movies and content from VIS KIDS that will start production in 2021.

The confirmed projects include a wide variety of genres going from documentaries to comedies, thrillers, horror, dramas, comedy-dramas, kids, and teen series. The newly announced projects are set to be produced across a wide range of territories and in alliance with proven international partners.

ViacomCBS International Studios' upcoming VIS KIDS slate includes:

  • Marcelo, Marmelo, Martelo– In association with Coyote Producciones Cinematográfica, VIS is developing a series based on the popular collection of books by Brazilian writer Ruth Rocha. The story follows the adventures between the past and the present of the children of the Caramelo neighborhood. The series will be directed by Duda Vaisman and Calvito Leal.
  • Gloria Wants to Know It All – As previously announced, the new animated children's series Gloria Wants to Know It All, is produce alongside Marc Anthony's Magnus Studios, Juan José Campanella's Mundoloco Animation Studios, and Lanugo Media Inc. Gloria Wants To Know It All is an animated series for pre-school children that tells the story of Gloria, an eight-year-old alpaca from the big city that goes to spend her vacation at her grandfather's house in Pueblo Lanugo. This tiny town is a vibrant example of Latin American culture's richness, where there is much to learn, and she wants to know everything. Gloria will feature music from Grammy-winning singer and international star Marc Anthony.
  • Deer Squad, Season 1 & 2 – As previously announced, this adventure show follows four lovable, enthusiastic, and heroic deer friends — Kai, Lola, Bobbi, and Rammy. Together, they protect the animals of Central Forest and the humans who inhabit Platinum City, a futuristic metropolis surrounding their woodland home. A collaboration between VIS KIDS, Nickelodeon International and market-leading online entertainment company iQIYI, Deer Squadwill premiere in the US, January 25th on Nickelodeon.

ViacomCBS to Launch Comedy Central+1 in Germany; To Timeshare with Nickelodeon Germany

ViacomCBS Networks Germany (Deutschland), Switzerland (Schweiz) and Austria (Österreich) has announced that it will be launching Comedy Central+1 in Germany on Monday 1st March 2021.


Comedy Central+1 will timeshare with Nickelodeon Germany (Deutschland), broadcasting nightly between 20:15 and 01:00. The time-shift block will air what is broadcast on the 24-hour Comedy Central channel an hour later. Comedy Central+1 will replace MTV+, which launched in November 2018, replacing Nickelodeon's Nicknight programming block, and aired was was broadcast on the 24-hour MTV channel an hour later. Nick, MTV and Comedy Central broadcast as free-to-air (FTA) stations in Germany. The main MTV channel will remain unaffected by the change.

Comedy Central and Comedy Central+ will also premiere the 11th and final season of hit comedy Modern Family from Monday 15th March 2021.

"We were able to increase our market share in 2020, especially with the young target group of 14-29 year olds, which is now increasingly difficult to reach for linear channels due to strong competition in streaming and digital," said Peter Forner, Brand Director Comedy & Entertainment at ViacomCBS GSA. "With Comedy Central+1, we have an additional opportunity to offer primetime highlights like Modern Family or American Dad to this young demographic. Of course, we're also excited about parents who are attracted to us through this new channel combination."

Canal+ Caraïbes, Canal+ Calédonie and Canal+ Réunion to Add Nickelodeon Junior

Nick News Mini: Canal+ Caraïbes, a direct broadcasting satellite service serving the French Overseas Departments of the Caribbean, as well as French Guiana will be adding Nickelodeon's top-rated preschool channel, Nickelodeon Junior next week. The channel will be added at no extra cost to subscribers, and will also be available via the myCANAL streaming service. Canal+ Caraïbes is wholly owned by the Canal+ Group, and is broadcast on Intelsat 903 at 34.5° West.

Update (19/1) - Canal+ Calédonie (originally called Canal Satellite Nouvelle-Calédonie and CanalSat Calédonie), a satellite provider based in the Overseas French Department of New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna, and with reduced offers in Vanuatu, will also be adding Nickelodeon Junior.

Update (22/1) - Canal+ Réunion, which is available in La Réunion, Mayotte and Comores will also be adding Nickelodeon Junior.

- Des documentaires, magazines et reportages bibliques

- Des émissions pour les enfants (dessins animés, comédie musicale...), telles que « SuperBook » pour faire découvrir la Bible avec un langage adapté aux enfants

- Des célébrations de culte des églises

- Des émissions de divertissements, dont une émission de télé achat

- Des émissions d’intérêt général (culture, médecine, histoire …).

Elle remplacera la chaîne ZITATA TV dont le lancement a été reportée à une date ultérieurement.

Paris, January 21, 2021 – ViacomCBS Networks International announces Pluto TV’s launch, the leading free streaming television service, in France. Pluto TV is the first FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) service to debut in the country. Beginning February 8, Pluto TV will be available on all major streaming devices (TV, smartphone, tablet, PC) via the Pluto TV browser www.pluto.tv, via app on Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Chromecast and the iOS and Android apps available on the Apple Store and Google Play.

Pluto TV offers a seamless streaming experience that is cost-free, with ease of access and no registration required, to stream 40 specially curated and original channels for French audiences. Its library will include content from both ViacomCBS brands and third parties through partnerships with a large number of leading international and French publishers, broadcasters, and distributors with the aim to deliver constantly fresh and varied content.

Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand will premiere Side Hustle, Nickelodeon's brand-new live-action buddy comedy starring social media sensations and real-life best friends, Jules LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels on Monday 8th February 2021 at 5:30pm (AEST)!

Side Hustle follows best friends, smart and sarcastic Lex (LeBlanc) and confident and tough Presley (Bartels), as they devise a plan to make money when fireworks accidentally destroy a boat belonging to the dad of their quirky friend and neighbor, Munchy (Isaiah Crews). Created and executive produced by Dave Malkoff (Henry Danger, Sam & Cat, Victorious) and shot in front of a live studio audience, Side Hustle season one (20 half-hour episodes) is being shot in Los Angeles.


Forced to come up with creative ways to earn money to pay for the damages, Lex, Presley and Munchy enlist the help of Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother, Fisher (Mitchell Berg), who creates an app to connect with people looking for help with small jobs, and Munchy’s bossy older brother Jaget (Jacques Chevelle), who makes sure they keep up with the payments.

"The series follows best friends, smart and sarcastic Lex (LeBlanc) and confident and tough Presley (Bartels), as they devise a plan to make money after accidentally setting their principal’s boat on fire. They’ll do whatever it takes – no matter how embarrassing – including working as human mannequins," reads the show's official synopsis.

“Annie and Jayden are two massively talented stars who kids adore, and we think our audience is going to love seeing them in their own show on Nick,” said Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. “Side Hustle is a new take on the classic buddy comedy, full of wild and hilarious adventures for our unique cast of characters.”

In the premiere episode, “Start Hustling” (#101), the kids get into a jam after accidentally setting a boat on fire. Needing money, they get a job as living mannequins at a fancy store. The kids are excited until they discover they’ll be modeling itchy wool outfits. After spending hours itching and posing, they hatch a plan to close the store early.


LeBlanc is an actress and singer who first came to social prominence in her family’s YouTube channel, “Bratayley.” She has since amassed over 27 million followers across her own social media platforms, and can be seen starring in Brat’s hit YouTube series Chicken Girls and A Girl Named Jo, and the YouTube Red Originals series We Are Savvy. As a singer LeBlanc’s had six songs in the Top Ten iTunes Pop charts, and two Top 50 Billboard Chart hits. She recently won “Choice Music Web Star” at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards, “Muser of the Year” at the 2018 Shorty Awards, and is currently nominated for “Favorite Female Social Star” at the 2020 Kids’ Choice Awards. In 2019, LeBlanc joined the Nickelodeon family starring in Annie vs. Hayley, a digital competition show with her younger sister Hayley, and co-hosted Camp Nick alongside Bartels.

On Hulu, she can be seen fighting dark forces opposite John C. McGinley in Stan Against Evil and as the entitled Becca on FXX's You're the Worst. She also created, wrote, produced, and starred in the critically acclaimed IFC online series Fortune Rookie. For the past 8 years, JV has hosted her podcast The JV Club with Janet Varney, where she interviews celebrities about their awkward teenage years. JV can also be heard as the AI "Sorry" on the improvised sci-fi comedy podcast Voyage to the Stars. On the development and production side, Janet co-created, co-wrote and co-produced Neil's Puppet Dreams, a series featuring Neil Patrick Harris and his puppet-filled dreams. She is co-founder/creative director/producer of one of the largest and most acclaimed comedy festivals in North America, SF Sketchfest: the San Francisco Comedy Festival, now in its 20th year.

Karen Long is a life-long fan of animation from around the world, including, of course, The Legend of Korra (particularly, Asami Sato). Influenced by Meelo's words of wisdom, "be the leaf," Karen can be found floating between her favorite activities: binge-watching a new series, listening to the latest K-Pop, and creating art as @ophvlilac on Instagram.

JOEY RAMIREZ - SENIOR BUYER FOR BOXLUNCH

Joey, while the BoxLunch Senior Buyer of Men's Apparel, is really just your average "hotman". He could also be described as a "harmonic convergence" of Korra fandom and the ability to judge art without actually being able to draw any himself. A fan since the original series run Joey has always admired Korra’s headstrong confidence and tenacity, while also relating to her difficulty mastering Air Bending something he still struggles with to this day (along with all the other bending forms). Gen Z studio Awesomeness, a subsidiary of ViacomCBS, has announced the premiere of Noah Beck Tries Things, a new reality series starring and co-developed with social media superstar Noah Beck!

The series premiere episode of Noah Beck Tries Things, "Noah Beck Tries Makeup with Best Friend James Charles" is now live on the @AwesomenessTV YouTube channel, with new episodes on Fridays at 7am PT.

Noah Beck Tries Things follows Beck on the heels of his move to Los Angeles to be a full-time content creator. Across six episodes, Beck’s newfound influencer friends are at his beck and call to help him learn more about the types of experiences that each content corner of Los Angeles has to offer. From making diss tracks to DIY crafts, the sky’s the limit as Beck’s friends help him sprout his wings and find his “thing” in the City of Angels.
