ViacomCBS CEO Hints That Paramount+ Could Expand the 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Franchise With New Show

Could Nickelodeon be planning to expand the Avatar: The Last Airbender universe?

Ever since Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered on Nickelodeon 2005, it has been a firm favorite with fans. Nickelodeon followed up the series in 2010 with a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender movie from M. Night Shyamalan, which was so poorly received that fans would rather forget it even exists, and in 2012 with The Legend of KorraAvatar: The Last Airbender concluded its run in 2008, with Korra concluding its run in 2014. Both series have since continued in the form of graphic novels, and have since received new life after being added to Netflix earlier this summer, with Avatar even smashing a record on the platform. There is also a live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series in development at Netflix, although it won't have its original creators on board.

Following its second life on Netflix, fans have been wondering whether we could see another series/movie set in the Avatar Universe. And although nothing has been announced, ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakish has hinted that we see another Avatar project!

CBS All Access, ViacomCBS' streaming service which will soon be renamed Paramount+ is currently building up its programming, with both library content from ViacomCBS networks including Nickelodeon - Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra are both available on the service - and original programming, including the upcoming SpongeBob spin-off, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.

Speaking today (Nov. 6) during ViacomCBS' 3Q 2020 earnings call, Bakish ticked off new originals already reported including The Offer, a scripted limited series about the making of The Godfather; a new edition of MTV’s Behind the Music; true crime docuseries The Real Criminal Minds based on the CBS series; Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years; and spy drama Lioness from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.

Bakish also suggested that the platform could also tap Nickelodeon’s Avatar franchise and MTV’s The Challenge for new original series!

"In terms of Paramount Plus, we have announced some new entertainment franchises that we’re bringing to Plus, the Godfather, SpongeBob, the Criminal Minds spinout," said Bakish.. "But, under the covers, our preview launch showed that there’s other franchises that work too that have potential, things like MTV’s reality show, The Challenge; things like Nick’s animated library series, Avatar, and all this is really the tip of the iceberg. And we do have other franchises in the Company. So, you can safely assume that upcoming announcements will include new original variants of them for Paramount Plus. We will of course have some non-franchise-based new originals to keep things fresh. But, I’m not going to get ahead of things and reveal them until we get much closer to launch."

Although this is far from confirming that a new Avatar project is in the works, it at least confirms that Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS are open to looking into expanding the Avatar universe!

Bakish even threw in "tip of the iceberg", which could be a reference to the pilot episode of "The Boy in the Iceberg"!

What do you think? Would you like to see a Avatar: The Last Airbender spin-off? Let me know in the comments!

VIACOMCBS NETWORKS AMERICAS LLEVÓ A CABO SU UPFRONT Y PRESENTÓ EL BALANCE 2020

Catalina Zepeda, Eduardo Lebrija, Laura Pérez, Gabriela Figueroa y Carlos Sosa.

Share it: @Nickelodeon #SideHustle

Nickelodeon will premiere Side Hustle, a brand-new live-action buddy comedy starring social media sensations and real-life best friends, Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT)!

Side Hustle follows best friends, smart and sarcastic Lex (LeBlanc) and confident and tough Presley (Bartels), as they devise a plan to make money when fireworks accidentally destroy a boat belonging to the dad of their quirky friend and neighbor, Munchy (Isaiah Crews). Created and executive produced by Dave Malkoff (Henry Danger, Sam & Cat, Victorious) and shot in front of a live studio audience, Side Hustle season one (13 half-hour episodes) was shot in Los Angeles.

Forced to come up with creative ways to earn money to pay for the damages, Lex, Presley and Munchy enlist the help of Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother, Fisher (Mitchell Berg), who creates an app to connect with people looking for help with small jobs, and Munchy’s bossy older brother Jaget (Jacques Chevelle), who makes sure they keep up with the payments.

“Annie and Jayden are two massively talented stars who kids adore, and we think our audience is going to love seeing them in their own show on Nick,” said Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. “Side Hustle is a new take on the classic buddy comedy, full of wild and hilarious adventures for our unique cast of characters.”

In the premiere episode, “Start Hustling” (#101), the kids get into a jam after accidentally setting a boat on fire. Needing money, they get a job as living mannequins at a fancy store. The kids are excited until they discover they’ll be modeling itchy wool outfits. After spending hours itching and posing, they hatch a plan to close the store early.

LeBlanc is an actress and singer who first came to social prominence in her family’s YouTube channel, “Bratayley.” She has since amassed over 27 million followers across her own social media platforms, and can be seen starring in Brat’s hit YouTube series Chicken Girls and A Girl Named Jo, and the YouTube Red Originals series We Are Savvy. As a singer LeBlanc’s had six songs in the Top Ten iTunes Pop charts, and two Top 50 Billboard Chart hits. She recently won “Choice Music Web Star” at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards, “Muser of the Year” at the 2018 Shorty Awards, and is currently nominated for “Favorite Female Social Star” at the 2020 Kids’ Choice Awards. In 2019, LeBlanc joined the Nickelodeon family starring in Annie vs. Hayley, a digital competition show with her younger sister Hayley, and co-hosted Camp Nick alongside Bartels.

Bartels is a singer, actress and dancer who has made a name for herself both on camera and on the stage. Having written and arranged every song she’s released, she debuted her first EP titled “What Really Matters?” last year and released her most recent single “Gameboy” earlier this month. She’s currently on tour opening for pop rock band Echosmith across the U.S., and she went out on a European tour with English singing duo Max & Harvey in 2019. She has a following of almost 12 million across her social media platforms, as well as over 1.6 billion likes on TikTok. On screen, Bartels has played a recurring role Disney Channel’s Coop & Cami Ask the World and lead in the films To The Beat! and its’ upcoming sequel, To The Beat! Back 2 School. She can also be seen in episodes of Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, Showtime’s Kidding and CBS’s Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

LeBlanc and Bartels co-hosted Nickelodeon's virtually-produced Group Chat this summer, which ranked as the number-one unscripted live-action show on cable with kids 6-11 in the second quarter of 2020. Bartels teamed up with social media star Brent Rivera for season two, which is currently airing on Nickelodeon.

John Beck & Ron Hart (Knight SquadFuller House, Liv and Maddie) serve as executive producers and showrunners. Production of Side Hustle for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Omar Camacho serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

To celebrate the premiere of Side Hustle, Nickelodeon has teamed up with Wattpad to launch three Nickelodeon #SideHustle Writing Contests! In the first Nickelodeon #SideHustle Writing Contest, Nick and Wattpad want Wattpadders to share their original story about the type of #SideHustle they'd start, if they found yourself in a sticky situation! To enter, tag your story with #SideHustle for your chance to win amazing goodies, including: a Wattpad swag bag, your story being announced by Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels in a video, shoutouts on social media, including on @SideHustle, a full year of Wattpad Premium, a $500 Visa gift card, and more! For more information, visit: https://www.wattpad.com/972835097-nickelodeon-sidehustle-writing-contest-contest-1.

Side Hustle underscores a key element of Nickelodeon's content strategy, to mine social platforms for the talent that kids love, and to superserve today's kids' interest in growing up to be entrepreneurs. Nick's new content slate is informed by the network's ongoing research and insights into today's generation of kids, who: are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.

Isaiah Crews Shows Acting Is More Than Just a 'Side Hustle'

Between red carpets and the BET reality show The Family Crews, Isaiah Crews has grown up before our very eyes. Now, the son of celebrity parents — Brooklyn Nine-Nine star and America's Got Talent host Terry Crews and wife Rebecca — is looking to break out on his own. The 15-year-old plays Munchy on the new Nickelodeon series Side Hustle, starring alongside Jules LeBlanc (Lex) and Jayden Bartels (Presley).

The live-action comedy sees the three friends finding creative ways to pay for damages done to Munchy’s dad’s police vehicle. They work with Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother Fisher (Mitchell Berg) to create an app called “Kid-DING” to connect with people looking for help with small jobs. As you can imagine, hilarity ensues from there.

We caught up with Crews in between time on set to talk about his first big acting gig.

When did production get start on Side Hustle?

Isaiah Crews: We started filming the first episode in September. We’ve been powering through the rest of the episodes. Because we started production so late, we don’t have any weeks off. We’re going through the whole season.

You find out you landed your first big role and then COVID happened. Was there any worry that this opportunity might be taken away?

I was absolutely terrified the first time we got postponed. I thought I would never be able to act again and never come back from that. I’m glad the network liked it so much they stuck with it.

When was the moment you decided you wanted to follow in the family footsteps?

When I first saw my dad on White Chicks was when I knew. I thought that job seemed so fun and wanted to do this with my life.

What’s the biggest piece of advice your parents have given you about Hollywood?

The first thing my dad told me was don’t get too big of a head. Don’t let your ego overshadow the rest of your abilities. If you get too cocky, you think you can do anything you want when you can’t. Mainly just stay humble and remember where you came from.

Have you been watching any of your dad’s past projects for comedic inspiration?

I’ve been watching Brooklyn Nine-Nine. It’s actually one of my favorite shows of all time. I was a big fan of Parks and Recreation and The Office, so I’m glad he got to work with people like [creators] Mike Schur and Dan Goor and all those amazing and talented people.

It has been my dream to see any of my family members make it big. I just love entertainment. Watching other shows that my dad has been on is helping me develop comedic timing. Learning when to hold for laughs, which is important on a sitcom.

How much of yourself do you see in Munchy?

I personally think it’s one of the funniest kid shows I’ve ever seen. The writing is so perfect. I feel like I can really resonate with my character well. I feel like I can get into my character pretty easy. They pretty much wrote him for me. It’s incredibly funny. I think people are going to enjoy it.

Munchy is an extremely optimistic lover of life, which is different from me because I’m not extremely optimistic. Though I am a lover of life. He just wants to have fun no matter the situation. He doesn’t think much before he does something, which is something I kind of struggle with. He is fun to be around.

You’re working with real-life best friends Jules and Jayden. How would you describe your dynamic with them?

We came together really quickly. Jules and Jayden were really welcoming. At first, I felt like a third wheel. When I first talked to them and hung out with them, they acted like I was their best friend for four years. I couldn't be more thankful because you can’t have that kind of awkwardness on a show where you’re going to be together for six months straight.

What are some of the side hustles you had or wanted growing up?

I wanted to be a babysitter, but my mom wouldn’t let me. I wanted to work at Baskin Robbins for such a long time. To be honest, if I didn’t get this acting job I would have applied to work there because I’m an ice cream fanatic.

When you told your parents about your career plans, did they try to dissuade you at all knowing how hard the business was?

My mom and dad were supportive from the start. My dad and mom are in entertainment and were excited to see me follow in their footsteps. They did whatever they could to help me get there, and it ended up successful.

The big premiere is this weekend. Are you there plans for a watch party of some sort?

I was going to hold a Zoom watch party with a couple of my friends and close family members and have a great time. This is my first serious, non-reality role. The only thing I’ve acted in before was a commercial for a toy called Boppi the Booty Shakin' Llama. It never even aired, so I guess it doesn’t count.

This is my first real acting gig, and I’m really excited for it to come out. I’ve never seen myself act in anything ever. I don’t even watch the recordings of my school plays because I’m too scared. I’m really excited to see how it turns out. I think it will turn out great.

What do you think makes Side Hustle stand out?

There are so many hilarious characters and personalities we have on the show. They are incredibly funny, even off camera. We get to work with a ton of sitcom legends from the past. I can’t say who. The jobs we take. They’re pretty good. The writing, the friendship between Jules and Jayden and seeing how that plays out. Then I come in and ruin the moment. It’s pretty funny. I think a lot of people are going to like it.

And maybe dad will end up guest starring on your own show one day.

Hopefully!

10 Shake Joins The Search For Blue’s Clues

Blue’s Clues & You! Premieres Monday, 23 November at 8.00am on 10 Shake

Australia - Pull up your Thinking Chair and grab your Handy Dandy Notebook, because hit preschool series Blue’s Clues & You!, a remake of the 90s’ classic Blue’s Clues, is shaking it’s way on to 10 Shake from Monday, 23 November at 8.00am.

Airing weekday mornings, Blue’s Clues & You! invites our littlest audience to join CG-animated Blue and new host Josh Dela Cruz, on clue-led adventures to solve a puzzle in each episode. With each signature paw print, Blue identifies clues in her animated world that propel the story and inspire the audience to interact with the characters. Original hosts Steve (Steve Burns) and Joe (Donovan Patton) also make cameos throughout the series.

Blue’s Clues & You! has been reimagined for today’s younger generation. Pups Blue and Magenta return with a fresh CG-animated coat; fan-favourites Tickety Tock, Slippery Soap, Shovel, Pail, Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper, Cinnamon, Paprika, Mailbox and the original Thinking Chair are back for more clue-lead adventures; and the Handy Dandy Notebook is now fully equipped with smartphone technology, allowing emails and video calls.

Excited to be part of a show for kids that encouraged participation, host Josh said: “It’s more of a transfer of power and authority to the home viewer, which is something as a kid, you don’t usually get. You’re usually told to be quiet and listen.

“Our show gives us the opportunity as kids, to voice our opinions and make mistakes, because that’s a part of learning.”

The original Blue’s Clues series launched in 1996 to critical praise from educators, parents, and preschoolers for its unique interactivity that helped change the way kids watch television. The landmark series also raised the bar in preschool television by exploring advanced subject matter such as sign language, geography, physics, emotions, and anatomy.

With fandom already afoot, the series premiere will coincide with the launch of the first toy range, an adorable animated plush Blue that raises her ears and barks fun phrases from the show. Available exclusively to Big W online (RRP $45) Peek-A-Blue is the perfect companion to help solves clues.

Blue’s Clues & You! also airs on Nick Jr. Australia.

C21 DIGITAL SCREENINGS
Theme Festival - Kids Programming

C21 explores how the children’s TV sector coped with the events of 2020 and looks ahead to what studios and distributors have to show after a year of development and remote production.

It would be simplistic to suggest that the kids content business has come through Covid-19 without any bumps or bruises. But compared with most sectors inside and outside TV it is weathering the storm pretty well.

Animation studios have had to make adjustments to their workflow, but this has meant temporary suspensions rather than cancellations, says Cyber Group Studios CEO Pierre Sissman. “We had a brief pause on our preschool series Gigantosaurus while we got animators set up to work at home, but they soon caught up. People have been working so hard during lockdown that productivity isn’t suffering.”

Kids live-action is, in theory, more at risk from the virus. But for the most part, children’s drama productions have fewer moving parts than adult dramas – which makes them more manageable. Viacom Studios UK’s live-action series Goldies Oldies, for example, bounced back from lockdown and re-entered production in the second half of 2020. Wildbrain, meanwhile, has scored strong sales for Malory Towers, a live-action series produced for Family Channel Canada and CBBC in the UK.

True, there is a financial downside to Covid-19, with ad-funded networks likely to trim their kids’ programming budgets heading in to 2021. But public broadcasters still provide valuable support as coproducers. To illustrate the point, Komixx Entertainment has just completed delivery of 52-episode animation series Dog Loves Books for BBC’s CBeebies, ABC in Australia and German children’s network KiKa.

Even more significant is the continued voracious appetite for kids’ content from both studio-backed and independently run SVoD and pay TV platforms. Some of this demand is met by in-house production divisions, notably Disney, Warner, ViacomCBS, or by subsidiaries, such as NBCUniversal (NBCU)-owned DreamWorks, which has just struck a long-term supply deal with NBCU’s pay platform Sky.

But there are also abundant instances of streamer commissions, from the AppleTV+ deal for Wildbrain’s Peanuts franchise through to Netflix’s greenlight of Xilam animated series Trico. Xilam has also been the beneficiary of renewed demand from Chinese streamers – recently unveiling a copro deal with Alibaba-backed Youku on preschool series Lupin’s Tales (78×7’).

Further evidence of Chinese support for the global kids’ sector is Tencent Video’s new swathe of copro deals with Luxembourg-based Zeilt Productions as well as Sixteen South and Silvergate Media in the UK. As reported in C21, the three partnerships mark the start of Tencent’s multi-year strategy to partner with European studios on copros that will see children’s shows air as originals on the Tencent Kids platform.

Ed Galton, co-founder and CCO of animation studio Cake, says his company has continued to do brisk business during Covid-19 in both production and distribution. Activities range from “a new Angry Birds series for Netflix to the third series of Total Dramarama, produced with Fresh TV for Teletoon Canada and Cartoon Network US,” says Galton. Further underlining the growing importance of streamers, Cake is also handling global distribution on Lucas the Spider, a Fresh TV show that will be shared by Cartoon Network and HBO Max.

Galton is not in denial about the challenges presented by Covid-19, pointing out that the current downturn may also result in households with kids taking fewer streamer subscriptions. “But the industry needs content. Even if there is downward pressure on budgets, that will lend itself to risk-sharing coproductions and distribution opportunities.” On the latter score, Cake has just sold series including Mush Mush & The Mushables, Pablo and Mighty Mike to broadcasters across Asia.

Cyber Group’s Sissman echoes the story at Cake. “We can see a drop-off in ad revenue occurring in Europe, but the overall picture for kids remains strong. We are close to delivering a second season of Gigantosaurus to Disney and are also in production on a new show, 50/50 Heroes, for France Télévisions. At the same time, our catalogue sales have almost doubled on last year, with recently produced series in high demand.”

The company’s increased emphasis on development proves that Cyber Group is feeling upbeat about the future, says Sissman. “We have boosted development by 20% compared with 2019, so we have 12 series in development right now. Two of those, Monster In My Pocket and Alex Player, received a very strong response at Cartoon Forum.”

Both of these series are aimed at older kids, underlining a broad trend towards action-comedy animation for the 6-11 demo. Monica Levy, head of international sales at Federation Kids & Family, says this category has also been a priority for her firm. “We make sure we cover every segment, but there are buyers for this age group across all types of platforms,” she says. “We recently licensed Squish to HBO Max and have just made our first third-party acquisition in the demo, a show called Presto: School of Magic, which is being produced by TeamTO. We’re also developing a 6-9 animation series based on a classic property.”

At the same time, Covid-19 has not discouraged Federation from continuing its expansion into kids’ live-action. “Find Me In Paris has been a huge success for us and proved that there is demand for high-quality drama that kids can co-view with their parents. Following that, we are working on two or three more high-end series where the emphasis is on great production quality, strong writing and compelling acting.”

Clearly, Covid-19 restrictions have not been ideal for producing high-end live-action series with sumptuous locations. Fortunately for Federation, however, the third season of Find Me In Paris was complete and the new series are in the development phase. “In the end it worked out quite well,” says Levy, “because we were able to spend a lot of time with writers. It was a chance to create some really great scripts.”

While a large part of 2020 has been about keeping kids projects on track and on time, one parallel narrative across the year has been how to keep kids stimulated and educated while away from school. In the UK, the BBC has been running blocks of education programming while Nickelodeon made 450 interactive and educational games freely available on its sites and apps during lockdown.

In the US, Sesame Workshop has been producing both live-action and animation educational content under its Caring For Each Other banner, says senior VP of international media and education Ed Wells. “We turned to our experts to really get an understanding of what kids and families would need during this time. We then developed content and resources on everything from hygiene to body movement to change of routine.”

Pandemic-specific activities have not deflected Sesame Workshop from its other priorities, however. Commercially, says Wells, the organisation continues its drive into the streaming market. “We still have excellent relationships with broadcasters such as the BBC, NHK and ABC in Australia, but it was important for us to embrace the new platforms that kids and families use. So we have forged a strong relationship with HBO Max on Sesame Street and a new animation series, Mecha Builders. We also have original content on AppleTV+.”

Socially, the issue of diversity has loomed large this year, says Wells. “Diversity has always been a mainstay of what we do, but the conversation shifted this year. So we’ve put a lot of effort into our anti-racism curriculum and created content like The Power of We.”

In fact, diversity has been a key theme across the industry. ViacomCBS recently introduced a No Diversity, No Commission policy, while the BBC is producing new episodes of JoJo & Gran Gran, the UK’s first preschool animated series featuring a black British family. Galton points out that his company and Triggerfish are creating Africa-led project Mama K’s Super 4 for Netflix.

It’s similar in Asia-Pacific, where Omens Studios’ business director Harry Teper says “diversity is part of our DNA. From the upcoming season of Leo the Wildlife Ranger to other shows in development, it all showcases diversity in different forms.”

Chi Sim Tang, CEO of Singapore-based Omens, echoes Sesame Workshop’s Wells by saying education has been a key theme for his company during Covid-19. “We have edutainment preschool shows Leo the Wildlife Ranger and Counting With Paula in production. With children taking to home-based learning in the pandemic, we’ve seen increasing interest in our shows, from parents, buyers and commissioners. We feel commissioners are now more receptive when we pitch ideas with educational and social development values.”

At the other end of the spectrum, demand for escapist fare means that slapstick shows are also seeing accelerated demand, with examples including Trico & Squish. Silas Hickey, executive producer of Omens series Amy & the Afterlife and Dragon Lizzardo, adds: “We are working with showrunners and animators on physical ‘toony’ shows. These are the kind of shows inspired by Vaudeville and incorporate slapstick comedy, and nutty, dimensional, wonderfully neurotic characters.”

The upbeat message from producers and distributors is reinforced from the buyer side. Louise Bucknole, VP of kids programming for ViacomCBS Networks’ kids brands Milkshake! and Nickelodeon UK, says: “It’s been a testing year, but we’re still offering a balanced mix of live-action and animation on Nickelodeon and Channel 5 kids block Milkshake!. Our animation was able to continue in production during lockdown and, despite some live-action series having to go on pause, our pipelines are well stocked. All of our productions are now back filming and we’ve forged ahead with live-action series including Go Green with the Grimwades and The World According To Grandpa.”

Last year, Channel 5 said it would double its content investment in Milkshake!, taking production from 160 to over 300 episodes from 2021 onwards. Nothing has changed on that score, says Bucknole, with CGI series Pip & Posy (a copro with Sky) and Mya Go and Brave Bunnies among the titles coming through.

In terms of how Covid-19 has impacted editorial strategy, Bucknole says the company has sought to “remain reflective and relatable to our audience. We’ve commissioned series with topical themes in mind. Go Green with the Grimwades is a reflection of kids’ interest in the environment and ways they can be more green at home. We’ve also produced over 50 shortform ‘stay at home’ episodes to keep kids occupied in a fun, safe learning environment. We’ve had great success with that and will continue to build on into next year.”

On Nickelodeon and Nicktoons, iconic franchises like Paw Patrol and SpongeBob SquarePants have been supported by specific Covid-friendly formats such as gameshow Nickelodeon Unfiltered and Group Chat, “both filmed in a Covid-style production,” says Bucknole. She says Covid-19 has done nothing to diminish the popularity of Nick’s iconic characters and this will be reinforced by the arrival of The Smurfs in 2021.

Away from Nick, other big brands that are set to reboot or extend include Hasbro/Entertainment One’s Power Rangers; Mattel’s Thomas & Friends, which is being reinvented in 2D by Nelvana; and Warner Bros’ Batman, which will spawn preschool series Batwheels for Cartoon Network and HBO Max. While this is not a new trend, it seems likely that the kids industry’s preference for the safety net of big brands is being further cemented by Covid-19.

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - In the new series, The Astronauts, the spacecraft Odyssey II is set to launch on a mission to retrieve a foreign object that could potentially save mankind. The plan quickly goes awry when five untrained kids use their parents’ security clearances to sneak onto the empty ship. Actor Paige Howard, who voices the spacecraft's onboard AI system recently joined 3 WTKR Coastal VA with details on the series.

The first two episodes of The Astronauts premiere back-to-back on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7:00 p.m. on Nickelodeon.

From Fox News:

Ron Howard’s daughter Paige recalls her childhood, says parents worked hard to ‘keep us in a bit of a bubble’

Paige Howard is starring in Nickelodeon's 'The Astronauts,' father is an executive producer

EXCLUSIVE: As a child, Paige Howard knew something was different about her family.

The 35-year-old is the daughter of actress Cheryl Howard and filmmaker Ron Howard. Despite her Hollywood roots, Howard said her parents were determined to provide as normal of an upbringing as possible.

“Some of my earliest memories involved me thinking ‘that’s strange’ whenever there was a crowd of people or a lot of attention coming our way,” she told Fox News. “I registered it as, ‘Hmm, this is different.’ But when we were growing up and really young, our parents worked very hard to keep us in a bit of a bubble so we didn’t feel overly exposed to all of that.”

Howard said it wasn’t until she was about 9 years old that she started to have conversations about what her father, now 66, did for a living.

“I didn’t really know what it meant to be a celebrity,” she shared. “I knew there was something different, but at the same time, it just felt so normal. We didn’t really know.”

But showbiz has become a family endeavor, of sorts. Howard’s older sister, Bryce Dallas Howard, is now an actress and a filmmaker. Their sibling Jocelyn Howard made an appearance on “Arrested Development” in 2008. Their brother Reed Howard, a pro golfer, is also a YouTuber. Howard herself is also an actress and is starring in Nickelodeon’s new series, “The Astronauts,” where the patriarch serves as one of the executive producers.

Howard said that when she decided to pursue acting, the former “Andy Griffith” and “Happy Days” star was happy to share fatherly advice. Growing up, one of Ron’s most trusted friends and mentors was George Lucas, who directed him in 1973’s “American Graffiti.” Ron would later direct 1988’s “Willow” from Lucas’ story.

Ron has led a decades-long directing career in Hollywood. His first day directing a feature film, “Grand Theft Auto,” came the day after his 23rd birthday.

“He absolutely gave me advice,” said Howard. “I think we all lean on each other for advice. Bryce, my dad, my mom -- we all do. I’ve definitely reached out to all of them for advice on my career, as well as life, of course. I do it several times a week.

“Of course, there was a part of myself that wanted to go off and explore other things and make sure that acting was really what I wanted to get into for myself, not just because that’s what was familiar to me,” she continued. “I’m grateful that I did that. I worked at the Bowery Hotel for a couple of years. I wanted to get into the workforce and really feel what it felt like to work a typical 9-5 job. I ultimately decided that the creative avenue was the one that I wanted to take.

“Initially, when I was really young, I was like, ‘Yes, I want to be an actress,’” she said. “And then as I got a little older, I was like, ‘I’m going to rebel against this and try other things.’ Now I’ve come home to acting again and it’s really, really fun. It’s definitely my career choice."

A press release describing the movie says "the spacecraft Odyssey II is set to launch on a mission to retrieve a foreign object that could potentially save mankind. However, the plan quickly goes awry when five untrained children use their parents’ security clearances to sneak onto the empty ship.

"After the children board, the  AI system triggers the launch sequence. The kids, unable to stop the ship from blasting off, must now take on their new roles as astronauts and embark on harrowing tasks as their parents attempt to find a way to bring them back home."

Howard plays Matilda, Odyssey II’s onboard AI system.

“I’ve done some voice work, but not a ton,” she admitted. “I loved the script. I loved that it was about a bunch of really intelligent kids with a lot of curiosity about science and going to space. The combination of all those things immediately drew me in and I’m so thankful that I was able to do it.”

Howard insisted it’s important, now more than ever, to offer family-friendly programming.

“That’s something I feel this show does really well,” she said. “You can watch it as an adult, a teen, or if you’re 7 or 8. It appeals to all audiences. Because so many of us are in our homes and not spending a whole lot of time outside and with other people, it’s a show where you can sit down and enjoy as a family. It becomes a really special and meaningful experience.

“It really takes you on such an adventure,” she added.

The first two episodes of ‘The Astronauts’ premieres Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
