Nickelodeon will premiere Side Hustle, a brand-new live-action buddy comedy starring social media sensations and real-life best friends, Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels on Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT)!

Side Hustle follows best friends, smart and sarcastic Lex (LeBlanc) and confident and tough Presley (Bartels), as they devise a plan to make money when fireworks accidentally destroy a boat belonging to the dad of their quirky friend and neighbor, Munchy (Isaiah Crews). Created and executive produced by Dave Malkoff (Henry Danger, Sam & Cat, Victorious) and shot in front of a live studio audience, Side Hustle season one (13 half-hour episodes) was shot in Los Angeles.


Forced to come up with creative ways to earn money to pay for the damages, Lex, Presley and Munchy enlist the help of Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother, Fisher (Mitchell Berg), who creates an app to connect with people looking for help with small jobs, and Munchy’s bossy older brother Jaget (Jacques Chevelle), who makes sure they keep up with the payments.

“Annie and Jayden are two massively talented stars who kids adore, and we think our audience is going to love seeing them in their own show on Nick,” said Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. “Side Hustle is a new take on the classic buddy comedy, full of wild and hilarious adventures for our unique cast of characters.”

In the premiere episode, “Start Hustling” (#101), the kids get into a jam after accidentally setting a boat on fire. Needing money, they get a job as living mannequins at a fancy store. The kids are excited until they discover they’ll be modeling itchy wool outfits. After spending hours itching and posing, they hatch a plan to close the store early.

LeBlanc is an actress and singer who first came to social prominence in her family’s YouTube channel, “Bratayley.” She has since amassed over 27 million followers across her own social media platforms, and can be seen starring in Brat’s hit YouTube series Chicken Girls and A Girl Named Jo, and the YouTube Red Originals series We Are Savvy. As a singer LeBlanc’s had six songs in the Top Ten iTunes Pop charts, and two Top 50 Billboard Chart hits. She recently won “Choice Music Web Star” at the 2019 Teen Choice Awards, “Muser of the Year” at the 2018 Shorty Awards, and is currently nominated for “Favorite Female Social Star” at the 2020 Kids’ Choice Awards. In 2019, LeBlanc joined the Nickelodeon family starring in Annie vs. Hayley, a digital competition show with her younger sister Hayley, and co-hosted Camp Nick alongside Bartels.

Bartels is a singer, actress and dancer who has made a name for herself both on camera and on the stage. Having written and arranged every song she’s released, she debuted her first EP titled “What Really Matters?” last year and released her most recent single “Gameboy” earlier this month. She’s currently on tour opening for pop rock band Echosmith across the U.S., and she went out on a European tour with English singing duo Max & Harvey in 2019. She has a following of almost 12 million across her social media platforms, as well as over 1.6 billion likes on TikTok. On screen, Bartels has played a recurring role Disney Channel’s Coop & Cami Ask the World and lead in the films To The Beat! and its’ upcoming sequel, To The Beat! Back 2 School. She can also be seen in episodes of Nickelodeon’s Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, Showtime’s Kidding and CBS’s Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

LeBlanc and Bartels co-hosted Nickelodeon's virtually-produced Group Chat this summer, which ranked as the number-one unscripted live-action show on cable with kids 6-11 in the second quarter of 2020. Bartels teamed up with social media star Brent Rivera for season two, which is currently airing on Nickelodeon.


John Beck & Ron Hart (Knight SquadFuller House, Liv and Maddie) serve as executive producers and showrunners. Production of Side Hustle for Nickelodeon is overseen by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Omar Camacho serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

November 2020 – Im Jahresendspurt gibt der Kindersender Nick nochmals Vollgas: Neben zahlreichen neuen Serien können sich von den kleinsten bis zu den größeren Kids alle auf eine spannende und gemütliche Vorweihnachtszeit freuen. Und selbst für die Eltern ist ein kleiner Nostalgiefaktor dabei: Mit Barbapapa sind so einige heutige Elterngenerationen aufgewachsen. Dies sind die Highlights zum Jahresende bei Nick:

Barbapapa


Vor über 45 Jahren erschuf das französisch-amerikanische Paar Anette Tyson und Talus Taylor das beliebte Barbapapa-Universum. In Deutschland erreichte die Gestaltwandler-Familie eine große Fangemeinde über Generationen hinweg – nun bringt Nickelodeon Barbapapa in neuer Form zurück auf die Bildschirme der Kleinsten und ihrer Eltern. Seit Sonntag, 1. November, immer um 09:30 Uhr zeigt Nick zwei Folgen der liebevollen Neuauflage, die ganz ohne CGI und Effekte auskommt.
Zudem konnte Nickelodeon für die deutschen Stimmen von Barbamama und Barbapapa zwei bekannte Synchronsprecher gewinnen: Dennis Schmidt-Foß (die deutsche Stimme von u.a. Eddie Murphy und Ryan Reynolds) und Christin Marquitan (spricht u.a. Katie Holmes und Alyssa Milano, 2019 ausgezeichnet mit dem Award „Die Stimme“ für ihre Leistung.)

Daniel (16), Nikki (15) und Tommy (12) entdecken zufällig, dass ihre Eltern hoch qualifizierte Undercover-Agenten sind, die für die ECCO (Environmental Counter Crime Organization) arbeiten und mit der Bekämpfung von Kriminellen beauftragt sind, die Natur und Umwelt gefährden.
Was Mama und Papa können, können die drei Kids auch – und beschließen, eine eigene, geheime Task Force namens Spyders zu bilden. Die Idee zur Serie kommt von Tom Riles, David M. Guest und Patrick Quinn, den Gründern von Life Of Dad – der größten Online-Community von Vätern.

Nickelodeon India to Premiere 'Pinaki & Happy: Bhoot Bandhus' on Sonic on Monday 9th November 2020

Nickelodeon India announces tenth locally-produced IP, Happy & Pinaki - The Bhoot Bandhus; It adds 100+ hours of original animated content in the coming fiscal


Continuing the rich legacy of being India’s leading kids’ entertainment franchise in the category, Nickelodeon India has sustained the number one rank for the sixth year in a row. After achieving immense success with other home-grown intellectual properties (IPs) like Motu Patlu, Pakdam Pakdai, Shiva, Rudra, amongst others, Nickelodeon is all set to venture into yet another untapped space. Post the resounding success of nine IPs, the franchise is now set to introduce the first ever spooky-comic series in the category with the launch of their tenth Indigenous IP - Lego presents Happy & Pinaki - The Bhoot Bandhus on Sonic!

Produced by Delhi-based Tavrohi Animation, the CG-animated 3D show is fast paced, entertaining, spooky, combined with comedy which will take the young viewers on an adventurous joy ride starting Monday 9th November, airing weekdays at 11:30 am.


Taking the kids into a new world of fun, the show will portray an unusual family of ghosts, who adopt the central character of the show – Pinaki and raise him as one of their own. The high-octane comedy combined with some “Bhootbaazi” will take the viewers on a laughter ride with mysterious and hilarious stories of Pinaki and Happy. The show will illustrate daily adventurous of Pinaki & Happy as the fun unfolds when the bhoot world meets the real world. The show is directed by Ankur Chauhan. Legendary lyricist Gulzaar has once again scripted lyrics for the title track of the show and the music is created by Simaab Sen. The unique spooky-comic, home-grown animated show from the house of Nickelodeon will further strengthen the franchise’s diverse content portfolio. With over 700 hours of content the franchise today has the largest, immersive and the most versatile local content library in the category. The coming year will see further scaling of the content library with over 100 + hours of content, expected to be added through new episodes and made for television movies.

Pivoting the media mix to the new normal, the marketing campaign will leave no stone unturned in reaching out to kids through all possible screens. Nick announces 10th indigenous IP, ‘Pinaki & Happy – The Bhoot Bandhus’; launching on 9 Nov on Sonic

It’s a 10 on 10 year for Nickelodeon! The category leaders in the kids space, Nick has retained its top position for six consecutive years. Continuing to build its robust content pipeline and bringing varied original programming, the Viacom18 owned kids broadcaster has announced its 10th homegrown animated comedy series, Pinaki & Happy – The Bhoot Bandhus.

Produced by Delhi based Tavrohi Animations, the new 3D animated show is fast paced, entertaining, spooky – perfect to take the young viewers on an adventurous joy ride starting 9 November, Monday at 11:30 am on Sonic.

Directed by Ankur Chauhan, the lyrics of the title track has been penned by the legendary Gulzar and the music composed by Simaab Sen. After the immense success with other local IPs like Motu Patlu, Pakdam Pakdai, Shiva, Rudra, amongst others, Nickelodeon is foraying into another untapped space – horror comedy. Sony YAY!’s Paap-O-Meter (featuring Bhoot Boss, Thakela and Pakela) is kind of a forerunner in this genre which has received amazing response and viewership numbers.

Commenting on the uniqueness about Bhoot Bandhus that will strike with the kids audience, Jaipuria further shared with AnimationXpress, “Pinaki & Happy- The Bhoot Bandhus is about the characterisation and the plot. We’ve actually nuanced each and every character in the show, their mannerisms and their traits is what, I feel, is going to make a difference. Then there’s the Ghost family – Colonel Suri and Aunty Suri, who thinks she’s a great cook, but she really isn’t but has some magical power and can move things, is what adds more life to the show. And then there’s the talking Ghost Dog. So, it’s a one of a kind show, you’ll know more when you watch the show. It’s a very different show where drama, curiosity, friendship, chaos and fun enfold when the ghost world meets the real human world. It’s also been written in a very different yet funny and spooky way, diving into the Ghost World full of adventures.”

Legendary Gulzaar saab has once again scripted lyrics for the title track of the show and the music is created by Simaab Sen. With over 700 hours of content the franchise today has the largest, immersive and the most versatile local content library in the category. The coming year will see further scaling of the content library with over 100 + hours of content, expected to be added through new episodes and made for television movies.

Kids’ entertainment franchise from Viacom18, Nickelodeon has announced the launch of its 10th home-grown IP in the form of a spooky-comic series called 'Pinaki & Happy - The Bhoot Bandhus' on Sonic from November 9.

Sonic is currently the number 4 kids' channel in the country by viewership and launching the show on the channel is part of the network's strategy to launch it into the top 3. The insight used for developing the show is based on Nickelodeon India's research on white spaces in kids' entertainment.

‘Side Hustle' Stars Annie & Jayden: How Their New Show Has Taken Their BFF Status To The ‘Next Level’

Social media sensations Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels are taking over Nickelodeon! The BFFs spoke with HollywoodLife about their new show Side Hustle, how they’ve grown even closer, and more.


Nickelodeon’s newest series Side Hustle premieres Nov. 7. The show follows best friends Lex (Annie LeBlanc) and Presley (Jayden Bartels) as they devise a plan to make money after fireworks get them into some trouble. With the help of their neighbor, Munchy (Isaiah Crews, son of acting legend Terry Crews), and Presley’s tech-savvy younger brother, Fisher (Mitchell Berg), they come up with an app to connect with people looking for help with small jobs.

Annie and Jayden also happen to be best friends in real-life and also co-hosted the Nick show Group Chat earlier this year. Going on this Side Hustle journey together has only brought the stars closer. “This show has completely our taken our friendship to the next level. We somehow every month just get closer and closer,” Jayden told HollywoodLife. “We always find something to connect about deeper, and the show has just given us so many opportunities to just connect each other deeper… It has really just shown us how much we love each other and love being around each other.”

The BFFs gave HL some scoop about their characters as well. Jayden noted that Presley is “so adventurous and spontaneous.” She added, “I feel like I’m definitely spontaneous but not as much as Presley is. It was cool to tap into that and really just go for it.” As for Lex, Annie said that her character is much more “rule-driven” and “thinks before she does.”

Annie and Jayden are joining an incredible list of Nickelodeon shows led by strong young women. They’re following in the footsteps of shows like Clarissa Explains It All, Taina, The Amanda Show, Zoey 101iCarly, Victorious, True Jackson, VP, and more. Annie admitted that this aspect of the Side Hustle journey has “kicked in” yet. She said it’s “just so crazy to even think we are a part of history, we are a part of a Nickelodeon show and doing it right now.”

Jayden followed Annie by saying, “Knowing that we have this opportunity is mind-blowing. This is what I’ve dreamed of my entire life, and the fact that I can do it with her… Wow, thank you. Universe, thank you.”

Emma Roberts Shares Her 'Unfabulous' Audition Tape

Emma Roberts took a trip down memory lane by sharing her audition tape for Nickelodeon's Unfabulous!, which features her younger self auditioning for the role of series lead, Addie Singer.

Watching the two-minute video, it's easy to see why the Holidate got the part right of the bat. She confidently goes through her lines and practically embodies our favorite middle schooler/songwriter.


In the video, she does the reading for the show's pilot episode, "The Party," where her character decides to host a big party in hopes that she will become popular. And of course, fans were quick to freak out in the comments.

One fan gushed, "YESSSS my childhood hero, legendary icon Addie Singer." Another fan wrote, "Brings back memories of my childhood! Thanks for sharing!!" Looks like we're not the only ones who are tempted to re-watch the entire series.

In August, Roberts announced that she's currently expecting her first child with her boyfriend, Garrett Hedlund. She revealed the news in an Instagram post, which featured pictures of her baby bump, and also announced the gender of her child. She wrote, "Me...and my two favorite guys." 

The mother-to-be celebrated the good news with an intimate baby shower in October, complete with a stunning floral dress. She shared a few snaps from the event and captioned the post, "So grateful to my family and pod for making my pregnancy feel so celebrated during such wild times. I love you guys @cadehudson22 @kakeykake @britelkin and thank you to @toryburch & @ericbuterbaugh for the magical garden."

Jarrod Villani Announced As Chief Operating And Commercial Officer For ViacomCBS Australia And New Zealand.


Sydney, Thursday, 5 November 2020:  ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) has today announced that Jarrod Villani will join Beverley McGarvey, Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President, as co-lead of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand.

As Chief Operating and Commercial Officer and co-lead with McGarvey, Villani will be responsible for all the combined company’s commercial activities and operations in both markets.

Most recently, Villani was Queensland’s Head of Restructuring and Brisbane’s Head of Office at advisory and investment firm KordaMentha. He brings to the role a wealth of experience specialising in organisational transformation, business stabilisation and sustainable growth.

McGarvey, who was promoted to the new role of Chief Content Officer and Executive Vice President in March this year, led the integration and transformation of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand. She is responsible for all content and creative activities related to the company’s networks and digital properties in Australia and New Zealand.

Both McGarvey and Villani report to Maria Kyriacou, President of VCNI’s operations in Australia, Israel and the UK.

Rod Prosser, Chief Sales Officer, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand will work closely with McGarvey and Villani to further strengthen revenue growth and strategy while providing oversight and management of the entire 10 ViacomCBS sales team.

Kyriacou commented: “Network 10 has performed very well this year. It is the only commercial network growing its audience and it has also recorded its highest commercial shares in key demographics since 2011. The integration and transformation of Network 10 and ViacomCBS under the leadership of Beverley has been successfully completed. We have launched a new channel, 10 Shake, 10 Play is experiencing its biggest ever digital audience and the MTV and Nickelodeon channels have also grown their share.

“We will continue to build on that momentum, while at the same time leveraging the powerful ViacomCBS brands and assets from both a content and revenue perspective.

“Jarrod is a highly qualified commercial leader with extensive experience in organisational transformation and stakeholder management. Jarrod’s broad commercial knowledge coupled with Beverley’s experience as an Australian media and creative leader ensures the business remains a unique and powerful media group. It is in great hands.

“I would like to congratulate Beverley for her leadership of ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand since March this year. It is a credit to Beverley and her team that the business has continued to compete and evolve.”

Villani will commence as Chief Operating and Commercial Officer, ViacomCBS Australia and New Zealand in early 2021.

Ten has been on a transformation path since CBS acquired the business in November 2017. Since then, it has ended a sales partnership with Foxtel Media, putting Prosser in the position to build an entirely new sales team to oversee.

Update (8/25) - It has been confirmed that Netflix is currently planning to debut The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run on Thursday, November 5, 2020. This date may change nearer the future. An interesting tidbit is that Netflix currently lists the expiration date for the movie as 2030. Its unknown whether this is the actual case or just a placeholder date they've put into the system. Time will tell.

The news follows the streaming giant acquiring the international rights to the third theatrical movie inspired by Nickelodeon's beloved animated series SpongeBob SquarePants movie earlier this summer, after the film had to forego its theatrical release in most countries due to the on-going COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.

In the U.S., the film will debut digitally via premium video on demand in early 2021 and then move exclusively to CBS All Access. The movie will be joined by SpongeBob prequel series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.

The only country where the movie has been released theatrically (so far) is in Canada, where it opened on in 300 theaters on Friday, August 14, pulling in $900,000 for its opening weekend. The film will move to Netflix Canada in the near future.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run sees best friends SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star venture out of Bikini Bottom and head to the Lost City of Atlantic City on a rescue mission to save SpongeBob’s trustee snail Gary. Its the third SpongeBob film, after 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and 2015’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Those movies were commercially successful, earning over $450 million globally combined.


In Sponge on the Run, after SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home. As they navigate the delights and dangers on this perilous and hilarious rescue mission, SpongeBob and his pals prove there’s nothing stronger than the power of friendship.

Sponge on the Run will see the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants reprise their respective roles: Tom Kenny (SpongeBob and Gary), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Douglas Lawrence (Plankton), Jill Talley (Karen), Mary Jo Catlett (Mrs. Puff), and Lori Alan (Pearl). An actor named Antonio Raul Corbo will be voicing young SpongeBob.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will feature a raft of guest stars, including: Keanu Reeves (as a tumbleweed named Sage), Awkwafina (as Otto), Matt Berry (as King Poseidon), Reggie Watts (as the  Chancellor), Danny Trejo (as El Diablo), Tiffany Haddish (as Master of Ceremonies) and Snoop Dog (as The Gambler; a Zombie Cowboy). Cyndi Lauper (The SpongeBob Musical) has written original songs for the film.

Based on the TV series created by Stephen Hillenburg, The SpongeBob Movie is written and directed by Tim Hill, and produced by Ryan Harris, with Stephen Hillenburg exec producing. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies present, in association with MRC A United Plankton Pictures production.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will be available on Netflix very soon! The film was previously released in Canadian cinemas earlier this summer.

U.S.:

SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will debut digitally in the U.S via premium video on demand in early 2021 and then move exclusively to Paramount+ (the new name for CBS All Access), ViacomCBS’ subscription video on demand (SVOD) and live-streaming service, following the premium video-on-demand window. The movie will be joined by SpongeBob prequel series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years.

About The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run:

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run sees best friends SpongeBob SquarePants and Patrick Star venture out of Bikini Bottom and head to the Lost City of Atlantic City on a rescue mission to save SpongeBob’s trustee snail Gary.

In Sponge on the Run, after SpongeBob’s beloved pet snail Gary is snail-napped, he and Patrick embark on an epic adventure to The Lost City of Atlantic City to bring Gary home. As they navigate the delights and dangers on this perilous and hilarious rescue mission, SpongeBob and his pals prove there’s nothing stronger than the power of friendship.


Sponge on the Run sees the cast of SpongeBob SquarePants reprise their respective roles: Tom Kenny (SpongeBob and Gary), Bill Fagerbakke (Patrick Star), Rodger Bumpass (Squidward), Carolyn Lawrence (Sandy), Clancy Brown (Mr. Krabs), Douglas Lawrence (Plankton), Jill Talley (Karen), Mary Jo Catlett (Mrs. Puff), and Lori Alan (Pearl). An actor named Antonio Raul Corbo voices young SpongeBob at Camp Coral.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run features a raft of guest stars, including: Keanu Reeves (as a tumbleweed named Sage), Awkwafina (as Otto), Matt Berry (as King Poseidon), Reggie Watts (as the  Chancellor), Danny Trejo (as El Diablo), Tiffany Haddish (as Master of Ceremonies) and Snoop Dog (as The Gambler; a Zombie Cowboy). Cyndi Lauper (The SpongeBob Musical) has written original songs for the film.

Based on the TV series created by Stephen Hillenburg, The SpongeBob Movie is written and directed by Tim Hill, and produced by Ryan Harris, with Stephen Hillenburg exec producing. Paramount Animation and Nickelodeon Movies present, in association with MRC A United Plankton Pictures production.

Its the third SpongeBob film, after 2004’s The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie and 2015’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. Those movies were commercially successful, earning over $450 million globally combined.

ViacomCBS Networks International announced today the launch of Noggin, the learning subscription service, on Amazon Prime Video Channels as an add-on subscription for Prime members in the Netherlands, Italy and Spain increasing its European footprint.

After launching in the UK, France, Germany and Austria at the beginning of September 2020, Noggin expands its presence to the Netherlands, Italy and Spain, enabling Prime members to watch or download ad-free long and short form Nick Jr. content in their local languages.


Noggin offers preschoolers educational content featuring trusted Nick Jr. characters that kids know and love — developed by curriculum experts. Titles set to be made available include kids’ favourites Dora the Explorer, Shimmer and Shine, PAW Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Go, Diego, Go! and more.

“We’re delighted to continue strengthening our position across Europe through Amazon Prime Video Channels and give our audiences the possibility to access this high quality service and its fun learning opportunities across these important markets,” said Olivier Jollet, Senior Vice President (SVP), Emerging Business for ViacomCBS Networks Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia (EMEAA). “Within our international streaming strategy, Noggin offers a unique proposition for kids and family audiences thanks to the high quality of the service and the niche content.” 

Noggin is available for Prime members in the Netherlands, Italy and Spain, with an add-on subscription via the existing Prime Video app to watch anytime, anywhere on smart TVs, mobile, Amazon Fire TV Stick, game consoles and through the web. Prime members will be able access the content with the convenience of a single account, login and user experience through Prime Video so there’s no need to jump from app to app.

Noggin launched in the U.S. in 2015 and has consistently ranked at the top of the U.S. charts in the Family and Kids categories. Noggin recently launched on Amazon Prime Video in the UK, France, Germany, Austria and is available across 25 markets in Europe via multiple platforms.

Produced with carefully sourced heavy cotton, this unique SpongeBob SquarePants collection offers a broad range of T-shirts and sweatshirts featuring the globally loved protagonist of Bikini Bottom.

'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run' Swims Onto Netflix Globally (Excluding U.S. and Canada)

Mikros Animation is celebrating the global streaming debut of The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, available on Netflix on November 5 in every country except the U.S. and Canada.


Canada enjoyed a theatrical run of Paramount Animation/Nickelodeon Movies’ third feature adventure for the absorbent yellow hero (and first using full 3D CGI, courtesy of Mikros) back in August, while U.S. audiences are waiting for a direct-to-digital debut early in the new year through PVOD and CBS All Access (which will be renamed Paramount+).

“We are thrilled that this movie directed and written by Tim Hill will be having a worldwide release through Netflix,” said Simon Vanesse, Managing Director at Mikros Animation. “We are so proud to have been entrusted by Paramount Animation to bring the latest adventures of SpongeBob and its universe to life in the first-ever, all-CGI feature animation.”

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run is all about fun, adventure, inventive environments and lovable characters. It’s the latest chapter in a global phenomenon spanning over two decades, about an incurably optimistic sea sponge and his pals in the magical and delightful world of Bikini Bottom on the seafloor.

“As a first in the series with fully-rendered CG animation, it was quite a challenge for us,” commented Marie Balland, Head of Production, Mikros Animation Montreal. “We worked very closely with Tim Hill and his team to ensure that the translation o the look from 2D to 3D animation would be done in full respect of the franchise, while developing a new and richer look that does really immerse the viewers in Bikini Bottom and the Lost City of Atlantic City.”

To stay true to the TV show, the artists adopted a differentiated style to animate the characters and the environment on twos. Creating the environments in “almost” full CG required a deep stylistic exploration and redefinition of shape language and visual codes. This, in turn, allowed the Mikros teams to create new colorful and contrasted landscapes with a high level of detail:

“In the TV series, the sand in Bikini Bottom has some splotches and splatters of paint. The 3D animation reveals that the splatters are actually little pebbles,” explained Rachel Tiep-Daniels, Animation Production Designer at Paramount Animation. This effect was achieved through an organic mix of high-tech and traditional techniques, combining strong asset building philosophy, workflow flexibility and visual inventiveness.


Preserving the spirit of the original series and the individuality and personality of each protagonist made the design and animation of the character very demanding. The rigging phase was complex and dense, as most of the characters are unique. The team at Mikros Animation had to rethink the crafting of the 3D characters: they used stepped animation to avoid any motion blur and smooth effects, whilst also using movable limbs, 2D shapes, animated FX and shading transfers, so that the characters could act, move, deform and do all kinds of crazy stunts!

“Tim Hill really understands the world of SpongeBob. He has the franchise’s DNA but he still let us, the artists, loose. So we all had the opportunity to propose our own artistic approach, which he and his team would then approve or not,” said Jacques Daigle of Mikros Animation Montreal, who was animation supervisor on the film. “As an animator, this type of movie comes only every five or 10 years in a career. We laughed a lot while working on this visual feast of color, comedy and fun.”

The joy of working on this feature animation was put to the test by the global pandemic. When “safer at home” policies started being implemented in spring 2020, Mikros Animation was able to deploy the necessary solutions within days to allow their artists in both Montreal and Paris to work from home securely. Beyond the technological challenges and the lockdown conditions that evolved over the following weeks, the studio was able to have more than 240 artists in Montreal and in Paris dedicated to the SpongeBob movie and its marketing assets, working from home. The project was fully completed under lockdown conditions, not only in full collaboration with Mikros’ transatlantic studios, but also with Mr. X, which handled VFX, and Technicolor Post-Production for grading.

BOB L’ÉPONGE LE FILM : ÉPONGE EN EAUX TROUBLES est synonyme de plaisir, d’aventure, d’environnements inventifs et de personnages adorables. C’est le dernier volet d’un phénomène mondial, qui dure depuis plus de deux décennies.

« Nous sommes ravis que ce film réalisé et écrit par Tim Hill soit diffusé dans le monde entier via Netflix », a déclaré Simon Vanesse, directeur général de Mikros Animation. « Nous sommes très fiers que Paramount Animation nous ait fait confiance pour donner vie aux dernières aventures de Bob l’Éponge et à son univers dans ce tout premier long métrage d’animation entièrement en CGI. »

« Une première pour la saga Bob l’Éponge, ce premier film dont l’animation est entièrement rendue en CG était un vrai défi », commente Marie Balland, responsable de la production chez Mikros Animation Montréal. « Nous avons travaillé en étroite collaboration avec Tim Hill et son équipe pour nous assurer que la traduction du look de l’animation 2D originale en 3D respecte totalement la franchise, tout en développant un nouveau look plus riche qui plonge vraiment le spectateur dans Bikini Bottom et la cité perdue d’Atlantic City. »

Pour rester fidèle à la série télévisée, les artistes ont adopté une animation différenciée pour les personnages et les environnements. Créer les environnements en “quasi” full-CG a nécessité une exploration stylistique approfondie et la redéfinition des formes et des codes visuels. Cette étape clé a permis à nos équipes de créer de nouveaux paysages colorés et contrastés avec un haut niveau de détails. Cela n’a été possible que grâce à un mélange organique de techniques de pointe et traditionnelles, que grâce à la combinaison d’un savoir-faire dans la création d’éléments graphiques, d’un flux de travail flexible et d’une inventivité visuelle.

Les équipes de Mikros Animation ont apporté une attention très particulière à la conception et l’animation des personnages afin de préserver l’esprit de la série originale ainsi que l’individualité et la personnalité de chaque protagoniste. La phase de rigging a été très complexe et très dense car il y a peu de personnages similaires. La fabrication des personnages 3D a été totalement repensée : l’animation a été découpée pour éviter tout effet de flou dans les mouvements tout en gardant une fluidité. Cela a également demandé à rendre les membres mobiles, à utiliser des formes 2D, des FX animés, des transferts d’ombres, …. Tout cela pour que les personnages puissent avoir un vrai jeu d’acteur, bouger, se déformer et faire toutes sortes de cascades folles !

“Tim Hill comprend vraiment le monde de Bob l’Éponge. Il a l’ADN de la franchise mais il nous a donné, à nous les artistes, toute latitude. De ce fait, nous avions tous l’opportunité de proposer notre propre approche artistique, que lui et son équipe approuvaient ou non par la suite. En tant qu’animateur, ce type de film n’arrive que tous les 5 ou 10 ans dans une carrière. Nous avons beaucoup ri en travaillant sur ce festival visuel de couleurs, de comédie et de rigolade”, raconte Jacques Daigle de Mikros Animation Montréal, qui était superviseur de l’animation sur le film.

La joie de travailler sur ce film d’animation a été mise à l’épreuve par la crise sanitaire mondiale. Lorsque les politiques de confinement ont été mises en place au printemps 2020, Mikros Animation a su déployer en quelques jours les mesures nécessaires pour permettre aux artistes des studios de Montréal et Paris de travailler à distance en toute sécurité. Malgré les défis technologiques et les conditions de confinement qui ont évolué au cours des semaines suivantes, ce sont plus de 240 artistes à Montréal et Paris qui ont travaillé à distance sur le film et sur les assets marketing de Bob l’Éponge. Le projet a été finalisé pendant le confinement dans des conditions de distanciation sociale, ce qui a nécessité une étroite collaboration non seulement entre les équipes de Montréal et Paris mais aussi avec Mr. X qui s’est chargé des VFX et Technicolor Post-Production de l’étalonnage.

On August 29th, more than 200 Mikrosians gathered at Cineplex Odeon Quartier Latin in Montreal for a private screening of “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run”. 

The masks did not manage to hide the big smiles we all wore – what a joy to meet again and discover this superb movie on the big screen! Congratulations to all our teams for this great show that we have been entrusted with by Paramount!

A big thank you to our wonderful teams of Montreal and Paris, to Cineplex Odeon and Paramount Canada and for their help in making this event possible! For those of you who haven’t had the chance to see this little gem yet, be patient, the international release is scheduled on Netflix soon!

Le 29 Août dernier à Montréal, c’est plus de 200 Mikrosiens et Mikrosiennes qui se sont retrouvés pour une projection privée de « The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run » au Cineplex Odeon Quartier Latin haute en couleurs!

Les masques n’ont pas réussi à cacher les grands sourires que nous arborions tous – quel bonheur de se retrouver et de découvrir ce superbe film sur grand écran! Un grand bravo à toutes nos équipes pour ce superbe spectacle pour lequel Paramount nous a fait confiance!

Un grand merci à nos merveilleuses équipes de Montréal et Paris, à celles du Cineplex Odeon et à Paramount Canada pour leur aide sur l’organisation de cet événement! NICKELODEON И CBS TELEVISION STUDIOUS РАСШИРЯТ ВСЕЛЕННУЮ «ЗВЕДНОГО ПУТИ» И ПРЕДСТАВЯТ НОВЫЙ АНИМАЦИОННЫЙ СЕРИАЛ ДЛЯ ДЕТЕЙ STAR TREK: PRODIGY

Nickelodeon и CBS Television Studios официально объявили о том, что новый оригинальный анимационный сериал STAR TREK: PRODIGY запущен в производство. Шоу, созданное по мотивам культовой научно-фантастической франшизы, расскажет про группу подростков-бунтарей, которые находят заброшенный космический корабль Межзвездного флота и отправляются на поиски приключений. Создателями сериала стали обладатели премии «Эмми» Кевин и Дэн Хейгмены («Охотники на троллей» и Ninjago), а руководителем проекта выступил Рэмси Наито, вице-президент Nickelodeon по производству и развитию анимации.

Премьерный показ сериала, снятого с использованием CGI-анимации, состоится в 2022 году* эксклюзивно на Nickelodeon. Анимационное шоу расширит границы легендарной вселенной «Звездного пути» и будет ориентировано на новое поколение зрителей.

Над сериалом работают Eye Animation Productions, новое анимационное подразделение CBS Television Studios, Secret Hideout и Roddenberry Entertainment. Режиссером проекта выступит Бен Хайбон («Охотники за кодом» и анимационный эпизод для фильма «Гарри Поттер и Дары Смерти. Часть 1»).

STAR TREK: PRODIGY станет первым сериалом постоянно расширяющейся франшизы «Звездного пути» ViacomCBS, ориентированным на детскую аудиторию Nickelodeon. Вселенная «Звездного пути» на CBS All Access на сегодняшний день включает в себя оригинальные сериалы «Звездный путь: Пикар», «Звездный путь: Дискавери», анимационный сериал «Звездный путь: Нижние палубы», готовящийся к выходу на экраны STAR TREK: STRANGE NEW WORLDS и находящийся в производстве сериал с Мишель Йео «Звездный путь: Секция 31».
