East Rutherford, NJ, Sept. 03, 2020 -- Following Governor Murphy’s recent announcement, American Dream will begin welcoming guests again with the opening of retail and reopening of its acclaimed indoor entertainment experiences on Thursday, October 1.

Retailers including H&M, Primark, and ZARA will open their American Dream locations for the first time and DreamWorks Water Park, Nickelodeon Universe, Out of This World Blacklight Mini Golf, and The Rink will reopen Thursday, October 1. Big SNOW American Dream opened Tuesday, September 1st and announcements about additional openings and new experiences will be released soon. To ensure the safety of our guests, reduced attendance levels and extensive health and safety protocols will be observed by all attractions and retailers at American Dream.

“We’d like to thank Governor Murphy, his administration, the New Jersey Department of Health, our legislative delegation, County Executive Jim Tedesco and his team, and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority for their collective efforts throughout this process to get to a safe reopening,” said Don Ghermezian, Co-CEO at American Dream.

The last several months have been difficult for everyone, and even though we are still adjusting to the new normal, we are confident that we can provide guests a safer environment to make dreams come true for everyone, everywhere, as well as create much needed job opportunities in New Jersey.”  

The health and safety of our community is, and will continue to be, our top priority at American Dream. Over the last several months, we have enlisted experts across health, safety, and government to develop in-depth health and safety plans for the property and each of our attractions and retailers. Our COVID-19 Health & Safety plan follows guidelines from State and Local government agencies, as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and was built in partnership with Hackensack Meridian Health, our primary health care partner. Additional details around this partnership will be announced soon.


A few things guests can expect upon their return to American Dream include, but are not limited to:  

  • Face coverings required for entry into American Dream
  • Reduced capacities throughout American Dream and within each of our open attractions
  • Increased sanitizing and disinfecting throughout American Dream common areas and attractions
  • Hand sanitizer stations and hygiene reminders installed throughout American Dream and within our attractions
  • Physical distancing guidance, including ground markings, plexiglass barriers, touchless programming and more
  • The Nickelodeon theme park's entrance has been reconfigured to improve traffic flow and make social distancing easier. Rides will limit capacity to provide more space between guests.
As each of our attractions will be operating at reduced capacities, we strongly encourage and advise guests to book their experiences in advance of their visit at www.americandream.com - tickets are available for purchase today.

Prices for Nickelodeon Universe tickets have been reduced by about $20 from pre-COVID prices and are now based on the age of the guest. Guests over the age of 10 will pay $59, those who are 3 to 9 years old pay $55 and it’s $49 for those over 65. Prices used to vary based on weekday or weekend and access to all the rides or or just the tamer ones. Peak pricing was $79.99.

American Dream laid off about 100 workers during the pandemic and said in June that it would eliminate 7% of the employees it previously hired. It also said that it would shift its offerings from 55% entertainment and 45% retail to 70% entertainment and 30% retail.

The project’s developer, Triple Five, has struggled financially during the pandemic, with its properties closed and few tenants paying rent. It missed three $7 million payments on its $1.9 million mortgage on the Mall of America. Triple Five used a 49% stake in Mall of America as collateral when it secured $2.8 billion in financing for American Dream, intertwining the two properties

The Canadian-based developer entered into a cash management agreement last month to avoid foreclosure.

Contractors working on American Dream have also filed liens against the developer saying they weren’t being paid.

Seventeen stores have been issued certificates of occupancy and are ready to open, state Department of Community Affairs spokeswoman Gina Trish confirmed to New Jersey 101.5:

The retail landscape has changed during the pandemic with Lord & Tayor, which was to have a store at the complex, closing all its stores. GNC included the American Dream location on its list of stores closing.

Trish said the amusement rides that are already permitted and had been operating do not require re-inspection to reopen.

"However a DCA team will be on site to reinspect as part of the standard operating procedure for amusement facilities," Trish said.

Update (9/29) - All 25 of Nickelodeon Universe’s original rides have been approved to open, according to the state Department of Community Affairs (via NJ.com).

A new ride called Flip Zone, however, has been taken out of operation by state inspectors because it wasn’t functioning correctly. “Once the necessary fixes are released from DCA’s engineering review, the ride will need another inspection before it is put back in operation,” a DCA spokesperson said.

Five new rides are also in the works for Nickelodeon Universe. Samba Tower, Crazy Bus, Happy Swing, Speed Way and Tea Cup are all in engineering review, the spokesperson said.

American Dream is hiring for full- and part-time positions at its Nickelodeon Universe theme park, DreamWorks Water Park and other venues at the mega-mall.

It is scheduled to reopen Oct. 1 after being closed for more than six months because of the pandemic. American Dream had planned to open its DreamWorks Water Park and an unspecified number of stores and restaurants on March 19, but it shut down March 16 to help mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

Those unveilings are now planned for its reopening Oct. 1. Stores including H&M, Primark and Artizia will open for the first time, as will the Dream Works Water Park. Previoulsy opened attractions Nickelodeon Universe theme park, The Rink ice skating rink and IT’SUGAR, a three-story candy store, will also reopen.

Gov. Phil Murphy allowed indoor amusements to reopen Sept. 1 but American Dream delayed its reopening. Mark Ghermezian, Co-CEO at American Dream, said earlier this month that “it was important to us that we took the proper time and precautions needed to welcome guests back in the safest possible manner.”

With two weeks left before the reopening, American Dream is now looking to hire more workers. The available positions include:

- Lifeguard, with paid certified training provided.

- Admission and guest services representatives, who will greet guests and help them purchase attraction tickets and hand out admissions wristbands.

- Ride operator, who will operate heavy machinery, enforce height and rider safety requirements, and interact with guests.

- Retail Associates for Nickelodeon Universe, DreamWorks Water Park, Angry Birds Not So Mini Golf Club, and other American Dream-operated retail shops.

- Ice Rink Attendants who instruct guests on safe usage of The Rink, help with scheduling and reservations, process skate and helmet rentals, collect and sanitize equipment, process all admissions, operate the Ice Resurface and more.

Applicants should apply online through the job postings. The Human Resources Team at American Dream will be hosting virtual interviews with qualified candidates in the coming weeks, with on-boarding/training sessions starting as soon as possible.

Comedy Central Reportedly Shelves ‘The Ren & Stimpy Show’ Reboot

Update (9/14) - Bob Camp, co-founder of the studio that created Ren & Stimpy and successor to the show after John K's firing from Nickelodeon is reporting that he's heard that Comedy Central has decided to shelve the Ren & Stimpy reboot. Please note that this is unconfirmed. The news comes as a petition launched by Robyn Byrd, who publicly accused Kricfalusi of having a relationship with her during the 1990s, launched a online petition to get the project scrapped, which has garnered over 12,000 signatures.

As part of a major push into adult animation, Comedy Central has given a series green light to a reimagening of Nickelodeon's cult Emmy-nominated animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show— 25 years after ending the Nicktoons' original run.


The Nickelodeon cartoon that gave the world Powdered Toast Man, Log, Canadian Kilted Yaksmen, Salve, every Christmas' number-one toy, 'Don't Whiz on the Electric Fence', and a shocking number of crudely rendered rubber nipples is set to return in a new form.

Comedy Central has been tapping into IP across ViacomCBS to build an original animated slate around stalwart South Park. The Ren & Stimpy Show will join the recently announced Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie on Comedy Central.

All four shows are being produced by ViacomCBS' in-house production studios, with Nickelodeon — home to the original Ren & Stimpy— overseeing the new take.

Update (8/14) - In a bit of a blow to fans, Bob Camp, co-founder of the studio that created Ren & Stimpy and successor to the show after John K's firing from Nickelodeon, will reportedly not be returning for the reboot. Though Camp seems unsurprised by his exclusion from the show's return.

The series followed the adventures of title characters Ren, an emotionally unstable Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured yet dimwitted cat often referred to by his pal as "EEEDIOT". (Their proper names are Ren Hoeck and Stimpson J. Cat.) It aired for nearly 100 episodes over five seasons on Nickelodeon, ending in December 1995. The following year, the series had a run on MTV.

Billy West, the voice of Stimpy — and of Ren (for three seasons) — is expected to return to the revival, along with several of the original writers.

It will not, however, involve Ren & Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi, whom a source tells Variety will have no creative input into and will receive no financial remuneration from the new series. Kricfalusi was accused in a 2018 Buzzfeed article of sexually abusing teenage girls.

Details beyond what was mentioned today are limited, including who is in the writer's room, when it will premiere, and how many episodes are attached.

“I want to thank our partners at Nick Animation as we re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.

The announcement comes in conjunction with the news that ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group has tapped Marvel Studios and Fox Entertainment alum Grant Gish to lead a newly created adult animation unit. Shows under his oversight include the Ren & Stimpy reboot, Comedy Central’s Beavis & Butt-Head revival, the Tracee Ellis Ross-led Daria spinoff, Jodie, as well as MTV’s reboot of Clone High.

“Grant has incredible instincts and a supercharged passion for animation. Along with his extraordinary reputation and impressive successes with some of the biggest hits in the genre, from Bob’s Burgers to American Dad– his vision is exactly what we’re looking for to lead our adult animation unit,” said Diaz.

“I grew up on MTV’s Animation Studios content where I’d run home from school to watch Beavis and Butt-Head eating pretzels on my couch,” added Gish. “With access to such a vast library of IP that will enable us to break through the clutter coupled with the opportunity to create a fresh slate, I couldn’t be more excited to join the E&Y Group that’s growing in droves under Chris and Nina’s leadership.”

Gish joins ViacomCBS from Marvel Studios, where he launched the Adult Comedy and Animation group within the former Marvel Television division. As VP of comedy and animation Gish spearheaded Marvel’s foray into half-hour comedy and adult animation with the upcoming Hulu series M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey. Before that, Gish served as VP, Animation Development & Current Programming, 20th Century Fox TV where he helped develop the Emmy-winning series Bob’s Burgers and oversaw American Dad. He also did a stint at Good Humor TV, where he worked on HBO’s animated series The Life & Times Of Tim and helped develop Good Vibes.

“We are thrilled to have Grant lead our new Adult Animation unit as we expedite the rapid expansion of our adult animation content,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS’s entertainment and youth group, in a statement. “Adult Animation is an incredibly powerful asset that truly works on every platform and around the world. It’s also pandemic-proof, which is why we are reimagining many of our beloved iconic [properties], unlocking incredible value.”

Gish’s hiring fits into ViacomCBS’ move to build content verticals across brands within the Entertainment & Youth Groups and is part of the Group’s broader strategy as they look to evolve from cable to content, developing and producing content for all platforms, including for ViacomCBS upcoming new shared streaming service (currently CBS All Access), linear cable networks, and digital platforms worldwide.

Nickelodeon launched the original Ren & Stimpy alongside Rugrats and Doug in 1991, where it quickly catapulted into the pop culture zeitgeist with its dark humor, vivid imagination and critical acclaim. The iconic dog and cat duo are consistently ranked among the top animated characters of all time.

Despite being a children’s show, Ren & Stimpy didn’t shy away from the dark or grotesque, and incorporated themes and jokes considered more “adult.” The series pushed many boundaries and has long been hailed for its ambitious artistry, but its legacy is controversial. Creator John Kricfalusi was famously fired from the show after repeated clashes with the network over production delays and the offensive content. Nickelodeon also took heat over the lack of educational value the show brought. Multiple segments were edited to remove references to religion, politics and alcohol. Fans would later discover through John K’s own airing of dirty laundry that the network had censored and buried episodes over hidden sex jokes that crossed the line.

The show’s notorious gross-out humor, scathing parody, and a meticulous art style that earned it critical acclaim also led to its downfall; the show eventually flamed out after John K’s dominating work style caused strife with the network and the staff, causing the whole operation to collapse at the height of its popularity.

Other titles from that era of television have been making comebacks in various forms, including the Rocko's Modern Life movie on Netflix, and Rugrats as a new TV series, set to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2021.

Kricfalusi has had a busy career, including the creation of shows like The Goddamn George Liquor Program and The Ripping Friends, numerous commercials and shorts, two The Simpsons couch gags, directing 100 episodes of The Powerpuff Girls, and producing music videos for Miley Cyrus.

John K would go on to try and replicate the success of Ren & Stimpy without the restraint of a kid’s network, churning out Ren & Stimpy’s Adult Cartoon Party, but it turned out the censorship battles made the show what it was. Walking the line was more entertaining than anything explicit. The series aired on the former Spike (now Paramount Network). Six episodes were produced as part of the animated programming block, but only three aired. A failure that put John K on an independent track.

The original cartoon series developed a loyal cult audience, with celebrities including Frank Zappa, Soleil Moon Frye, Mark Hamill and Phil Hartman playing incidental characters. The series also expanded into consumer products, including plush, video games and comics.

In 2018, John K. faced his reckoning: two women accused John K of preying on and sexually harassing them while they were underage, a history of behavior the animator didn’t deny. As many of his former staff say in the upcoming documentary Happy Happy Joy Joy, which chronicles the rise and fall of the series, the misconduct put the entire legacy of Ren & Stimpy in question. The documentary hits streaming services Aug. 14.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” said McCarthy. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

He added: "We are going to give them the edgy, irreverent, comedic voice that defined them but we’re going to tell all new stories and bring in new character."

Comedy Central is already home to the groundbreaking animated series South Park, now in its 23rd season. It’s been renewed through its 26th season, airs worldwide in over 130 countries in 30 different languages and has enjoyed multi-platform success. It was the top animated series on Hulu and now streams exclusively on HBO Max.

Meanwhile, a revival of the cult animated series Clone High (2002-03) will return to sister network MTV with original series creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence.

“We’re not making the same shows,” says McCarthy, president, Entertainment & Youth Group, ViacomCBS. “The world has changed so much. To me they’re not remakes but re-imaginings. Beavis and Butt-Head, for instance, was so defined by GenXers, my generation, who are now having kids and raising GenZers.

This animation push is part-and-parcel of the ratings success enjoyed by corporate parent ViacomCBS, whose portfolio includes Paramount Network (and its hit cable series Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner) and Pop TV, which found its breakout series in the Emmy-nominated comedy Schitt’s Creek, which ended its six-season run in April.

“We’re really making a dramatic shift on Comedy Central, where South Park is killing it,” McCarthy says. “The nice thing about animation is it helps you take the hard truth of life and process these through funny jokes — even when they’re not funny.

“It’s a visual manifestation of pure insanity
 and the rise of adult animation is skyrocketing.”

Comedy Central is also the home of syndicated repeats of adult animated series including BoJack Horseman, Mike Judge's King of the Hill and Seth MacFarlane's The Cleveland Show. (It's worth noting that Judge and co-creator Greg Daniels had "preliminary conversations" with Fox for a King of the Hill revival in 2017.)

This is McCarthy's latest major programming acquisition for Comedy Central since he took over from former network president Kent Alterman as part of a larger ViacomCBS executive consolidation. Since then, Comedy Central has canceled Alternatino With Arturo Castro (which moved to Quibi) and Lights Out With David Spade while renewing its Crank Yankers revival, Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens and Tosh.0 (for four more seasons).

Adult animation continues to be a growth genre on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. In success, shows like Rick and Morty repeat well and bring in younger audiences and can often lead to profitable merchandising lines. Franchises like Family Guy and Bob's Burgers, for example, are considered to be worth billions. What's more, animated series are able to be produced remotely during the (COVID-19) coronavirus pandemic that has shut down hundreds of film and TV projects.

In 2018, Kricfalusi offered something nearing apology to two women who had accused him of grooming them for sexual relationships when they were 13 and 15, blaming undiagnosed bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

"The last thing I want to do is aggravate bad feelings that already exist," he wrote. "These feelings are obviously real and strong and I understand them much better now.

"It’s not pretty to have to stare myself in the face and see myself the way those who I’ve hurt see me. I imagine many other men are waking up and feeling the shame I’ve felt for years. I welcome a social change in our attitudes towards women and how we should treat them with respect and equality."

After Ren & Stimpy's Troubled History, a Reboot Is Still Worth It

The Ren & Stimpy Show is making a comeback, but given the show's troubled history, maybe the reboot shouldn't happen.

Though the pop culture hit The Ren & Stimpy Show is coming back to Comedy Central with a "re-imagined" take on the classic '90s animated series, it's unclear if a resurrection is really worth the trouble because of the show's dark history, However, even though the show comes with some unwanted baggage that Comedy Central would love to leave buried, with a lot of it excluded from the reboot, the pros might just outweigh the cons.

One can't think of iconic '90s cartoons without Ren & Stimpy. The show was a trailblazer, garnering widespread critical acclaim and anchoring Nickelodeon's cartoon block with Rugrats and Doug. The show ingrained itself into pop culture and would actually influence future cartoons such as SpongeBob SquarePants. Considering its impact on a generation of fans and its influence on a newer one, rebooting this series for another generation to enjoy would actually do more good than harm.

Seeing as this isn't the first time a Ren & Stimpy reboot has been attempted, there definitely seems to be a market for this innovative program. This time, however, Comedy Central can get this reboot right and avoid the same mistakes that the previous incarnations had suffered through. There's no reason why a new generation can't enjoy classic characters like Mr. Horse, Muddy Mudskipper and Powdered Toast Man without thinking of the baggage of the previous two series.

One of the main reasons for that is most of the toxicity behind Ren & Stimpy won't be returning. The show's creator, John Kricfalusi, won't be involved with the reboot after a slew of sexual harassment accusations, meaning his constant disagreements with Nickelodeon that caused episodes to be late or shelved are a thing of the past. On top of that, many of the show's original writers, including the original voice of Stimpson J. Cat, Billy West, are expected to return.

However, on a slightly disappointing albeit surprising note, Bob Camp, co-founder of the studio that created Ren & Stimpy and successor to the show after John K's firing from Nickelodeon, will not be returning. Though Camp seems unsurprised by his exclusion from the show's return, many fans believe the show will lose its appeal without his involvement. Although, the 2003 reboot Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon had John K's fingerprints all over it and that reboot couldn't even survive more than three episodes before Spike TV pulled the plug, meaning the old creative team may not have the charm it used to.

Sure, without Ren & Stimpy's original creators, the show may lack some of its original pizzazz, but in the long run, losing them may actually be another positive. Many original series episodes under Camp's direction were so bad that not even the History Eraser Button can remove them from memory. To put it simply, without Bob Camp and John K's influence, the new Ren & Stimpy should be an improvement.

With that being said, though, despite all the positives of a reboot, the show's behind-the-scenes chaos may be too much for Comedy Central to overcome. While it's great that he no longer has anything to do with the show, the stigma that John K left will undoubtedly linger over the reboot series. At a time where people have had enough of abusive people being in power, bringing back a show one had a hand in creating is a difficult thing to sell.

In addition to past controversies hanging over the show, it's fair to wonder if people really want more Ren & Stimpy. Reboots of Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High are already in the works, as well as a spin-off of Daria, creating what would seem to be an overabundance of remakes, all stemming from Comedy Central. Unfortunately, reboots tend to be frowned upon as of late, with fans and critics alike panning them as unoriginal. Hopefully, that isn't the case with Ren & Stimpy, as the show has a lot more to offer audiences than the drama it has become synonymous with.

NEW YORK–Oct. 1, 2020– Nickelodeon is celebrating Halloween with spooktacular premieres of its live-action, animation and preschool series beginning Friday, Oct. 2.  Viewers will be treated to hauntingly fun, all-new episodes of hit series, including The Loud House, The Casagrandes, Blue’s Clues & You!, and It’s Pony.

Fans can head to NickJr.com and the Nick and Nick Jr. app to view Halloween-themed episodes and short-form content. Noggin, Nickelodeon’s interactive learning service for preschoolers, will also feature festive long and short-form content, games and more during the month of October.

It's Halloween season, and a power outage can't stop Patchy the Pirate from counting down the spookiest SpongeBob scenes ever.
It’s Halloween and Paddington goes treat-or-treating with Jonathan and Judy around Windsor Gardens, but Mr. Curry does not want to join in.
  • The Loud House“Ghosted!” (30-minute special) – Friday, Oct. 9, at 7pm
With the help of Lincoln and Clyde, Lori banishes a ghost she believes is haunting her. But when Fairway’s golf team starts to struggle, she realizes she needs to bring it back to turn the team’s luck around.
  • The Casagrandes“Fails from the Crypt/Bad Cluck” – Friday, Oct. 9, at 7:30pm
The kids try to break a local record for staying in the cemetery overnight. Then, a haunted chicken is pestering the Casagrandes, but they think it is only there for Sergio.

The Rangers and Floof help Patty prep for an eco-friendly spooky costume party.

It's a spooky Halloween at the Blue's Clues house. Blue is dressed up as a fish, but Magenta can't decide what costume to wear so Josh plays a game of Blue's Clues to figure it out.

Peru Champs Partners with Biotec Andino Nickelodeon and MGA for Children's Facemask Campaign to Raise Money for Disadvantaged Youth

Peru Champs is partnering with Biotec Andino (through its Gelatti arm), Nickelodeon and MGA to launch "SĂșmate y Dona" ("Join and Donate"), a brand new campaign in which the Peruvian non-profit civil association is seeking to raise money to help disadvantaged youth in the country with the sale of children's facemasks (face coverings) featuring popular Nickelodeon and MGA properties and brands, including PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants (Bob Esponja), L.O.L Suprise, Unicornio, Trendy and Camo. During the campaign, Biotec Andino will donate money to Peru Champs to increase the number of scholarships that it can provided to children in 17 cities across the country.



PerĂș Champs, Gelatti, Nickelodeon y MGA lanzan mascarillas infantiles

Este año PerĂș Champs realiza la campaña SĂșmate y Dona que, gracias a la donaciĂłn de Biotec Andino, a travĂ©s de su marca Gelatti y, a los diseños de Nickelodeon y MGA para la fabricaciĂłn de mascarillas infantiles, se podrĂĄ ampliar el alcance de jĂłvenes a los que se busca ayudar.

La campaña consiste en que por la compra de las mascarillas desechables, Biotec Andino estarĂĄ donando dinero a PerĂș Champs para aumentar la cantidad de becas que se puedan brindar a niños y niñas en 17 ciudades del paĂ­s. Las mascarillas muestran los diseños de los dibujos animados mĂĄs reconocidos como Paw Patrol, L.O.L Suprise, Bob Esponja, Unicornio, Trendy y Camo. AdemĂĄs, el producto posee una tecnologĂ­a de tres capas, cintas elĂĄsticas y la certificaciĂłn de Leitat Technological Center de Europa.

“Estamos orgullosos de poder formar alianzas con otras organizaciones reconocidas en la bĂșsqueda de un PerĂș mĂĄs igualitario. Sabemos que la pandemia golpearĂĄ fuerte a nuestro paĂ­s, pero eso no nos debe alejar de la visiĂłn de un PerĂș mĂĄs unido, mĂĄs educado y con las mismas oportunidades para todos”, asegurĂł Alberto de CĂĄrdenas, Director Ejecutivo de PerĂș Champs.

PerĂș Champs es una asociaciĂłn civil sin fines de lucro, fundada en el año 2013, con el objetivo de reducir la brecha de inequidad educativa en el paĂ­s a travĂ©s de becas escolares para niños y niñas.

La ONG peruana identifica a escolares de bajos recursos con talento acadĂ©mico, artĂ­stico o deportivo, y crea oportunidades para que reciban una educaciĂłn de calidad, potencien sus competencias blandas, y sean futuros lĂ­deres de un PerĂș sostenible.

Este 2020, dentro de las consecuencias que dejarĂĄ la pandemia, se encuentra el aumento de la brecha de inequidad en toda LatinoamĂ©rica y, sobre todo, en PerĂș. Sin embargo, esto solo motiva al compromiso de la organizaciĂłn con transformar la vida de los jĂłvenes mĂĄs vulnerables del paĂ­s. Milk & Cream's Nickelodeon Flavor Takeover Continues with 'Blues Clues & You!' Treats

Milk & Cream is at it again! 

After the success of the limited-edition Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle treats (ice cream pizza!) in August, the Instagrammable dessert spot is continuing the fun with a second installment of the Nickelodeon flavor takeover (#NICKFLAVORTAKEOVER). This time, the focus is on Blue's Clues & You!.

Show one of your favorite TV shows for kids some love by stopping in for a snack. Now through Oct 25, the shop will offer Blue's Snack Time Treat, an ice cream sammie with cookie dough, chocolate chips and dark chocolate-covered pretzels and Josh's Ultimate Ube Surprise, a Magenta yam ice cream sandwiched between two chocolate wafers and dusted off with chocolate crunchies.

Of course, the ice cream hotspot will be decked out in all-things Blue's Clues, so make sure there is room in your camera roll. (I did tell you this was an Instagrammable dessert spot, after all.) Plus, temporary tattoos will be given out with your Blue's Clues purchase!

ViacomCBS' Jules Borkent Talks Viacom-CBS Re-merger; Nickelodeon's Upcoming Highlights, Pandemic and More

Longtime Nickelodeon executive Jules Borkent was named executive Vice President (VP) for kids and family at ViacomCBS Networks International (VCNI) at the start of this year. The move keeps him as the brand lead for Nickelodeon International—including content strategy, acquisitions, original development and co-productions—while also opening up opportunities for the kids’ outlet to work with sister assets like CBS All Access (soon to be rebranded as Paramount+). Borkent recently talked to TV Kids about serving audiences during lockdown, launch strategies and new Intellectual Property (IP) highlights.

TV KIDS: Tell us about the impact of the Viacom-CBS merger on your remit.


BORKENT: As CBS does not have a kids’ and family unit, there has not been an immediate impact as far as Nickelodeon is concerned. Where the opportunity is for Nickelodeon now is to work across the CBS portfolio. Looking at CBS’s extensive IP, we’ve recently announced a CG-animated series, Star Trek: Prodigy, which is being produced for Nickelodeon, and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which will premiere on CBS All Access in the U.S. next year. We’ll continue to explore further ways to partner with CBS on our kids’ content portfolios in the future. Other than that, the merger creates more opportunities to work across the different divisions, including production, consumer products and syndication.

TV KIDS: How did you approach serving viewers during lockdown? I imagine it differed across markets as shutdowns hit in countries at different times.

BORKENT: Absolutely. It all happened very quickly. Given that we work well in advance, a lot of our content was already produced. Launches went ahead as planned—we didn’t see an immediate impact on rollouts. Live action came to a sudden halt, though, and as most of it is produced out of the U.S., that did have an impact on new episode delivery. Internationally, we had one new production up and running in the U.K., the scripted series Goldie’s Oldies, and the fourth season of Hunter Street that was being filmed in Holland, so those had to go on hold for a couple of months. I am very happy to say that earlier this summer, we were able to start production again on both these two shows. So while there has been a delay, we’ve managed to catch up.

As far as animation is concerned, we had 11 shows in production when the pandemic hit and we managed to keep all of them going, without missing the delivery dates. Working remotely became the standard for our animation teams around the world during this time. Also, as certain markets were opening earlier than others, we were working with animation companies around the world that were able to commence work on our productions sooner as they came out of lockdown and were ready to work again. So generally, while it’s impacted everybody, we have been able to keep our output to our audience pretty much intact.

We also produced some new shows that were shot during lockdown. One produced in the U.S. is called Group Chat, a nighttime talk show done from our talent’s homes, hosted by Annie LeBlanc and Jayden Bartels, the stars of our new sitcom Side Hustle. We also produced Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered, which is a new game show where celebrities hide behind 3D animated characters and the panel has to guess who the mystery guest is. We also recently restarted production on The Astronauts, which is shot in Canada and produced in partnership with Imagine Entertainment, and we’ll now hopefully very quickly be able to go back in production on our L.A.-based live-action shows as well.

TV KIDS: Were there trends that emerged during lockdown viewing that you think will continue, post the pandemic?

BORKENT: As expected, family viewing increased during lockdown. For us, being focused on international, we saw the rise of global platforms during this crisis and the popularity of international content has been quite phenomenal. We saw a lot of engagement with content from different markets as kids were just exposed to a lot more. They were, of course, coming in for their favorite shows—PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants, etc.—but what we noticed was a powerful trend towards borderless storytelling, an expansion of subject and style that has enabled kids to embrace diversity on-screen and behind the camera. That was a big takeaway for us, and that will absolutely continue. We’re focused on having as diverse a voice as possible, and the appetite for international content has been shown during this time.

TV KIDS: How have your launch strategies evolved as more viewing has transitioned to on-demand?

BORKENT: Everyone says this: We want to be everywhere kids are. That means we have to be incredibly focused on ensuring that new content is seen by as broad an audience as possible. While we still have a lot of viewing happening on our linear services, as everywhere, the engagement on other platforms is growing and continues to grow. We have quite a sophisticated rollout plan for all our content, whether that is through short-form on YouTube, long-form on our apps or VOD services, or our linear channels. It’s becoming a bigger puzzle to solve every year and my team is constantly working on ensuring our content is made available to our audience wherever they are and however they consume the content.  We’ve just announced the launch of our SVOD service internationally and that will be an additional opportunity for us to focus on. We are continuing to work closely with our free-to-air partners around the world to ensure our content reaches as wide an audience as possible.

TV KIDS: How are you and your teams around the world finding and nurturing new talent?

BORKENT: We have strong teams all over the world; they are constantly out in the market looking for new talent to work with. We currently have new projects coming out of India, Israel, Singapore, South Korea. Recently we announced The Twisted Timeline of Sammy & Raj, our first original co-production with Nickelodeon India, which will launch internationally in 2021. We also have a very successful shorts program through which we have discovered new voices and talent. One of the shows that came out of this program was It’s Pony, which has been incredibly successful and was recently renewed for a second series. I am also very excited about our new original series Deer Squad, a co-production with iQiyi that we produced in China but wrote out of the U.K. and it has successfully launched in China, with the international rollout planned for later this year. Our international slate is constantly growing.

TV KIDS: What are you looking for as we head into MIPJunior and MIPCOM?

BORKENT: We aim to deliver shows with great characters, great storylines and relatable content that kids can enjoy and relate to wherever they are. Diversity is key; it has always been for Nickelodeon and we continue to do that. We’re looking at animation to fill the pipeline, whether that’s through co-production models or prebuy acquisitions, and we recently announced the acquisition of the new series of The Smurfs. Live action has also always been and continues to be a very big focus point. And we are also interested in new formats. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we noticed the engagement with talent through some of the shows we produced during lockdown, and we’re always on the lookout for new ideas and formats to keep our audience entertained.
