MEZZOTINT LABEL ANNOUNCES DELUXE REISSUE OF POLARIS’ ‘MUSIC FROM THE ADVENTURES OF PETE AND PETE: 21ST CENTURY EDITION’

Attention: Little Vikings, Kreb Scouts, and bona fide Sludgecicle men!

The Mezzotint Label is proud and happy to finally announce the release of ultimate & deluxe package of Polaris: Music from the Adventures of Pete and Pete: 21st Century Edition. It’s been an interstellar journey, but it’s really coming out on September 18 2020. The pre-sale begins September 1st. This record has been a labor of love and is the most complete document of this legendary soundtrack. It looks and sounds amazing. The demo CD is random selections of demos, including the demo for ‘Hey Sandy’ and more. PRE-ORDER

The re-release of the fabled music from the legendary Nickelodeon TV series is pressed on silver vinyl and packaged in a sprawling gatefold sleeve chock full of new photos and rare images. The inner sleeve has liner notes written by show creator Will McRobb and for the first time ever….Polaris lyrics! No more guessing. 21st Century Polaris also includes a CD of the original Muggy demos of some of the songs on the record. The definitive edition for the millennium and the galaxies and beyond! As far as we know……..

The pre-sale bundle includes a new Polaris shirt designed by the great Luke Cavagnac (choose from sizes S, M, L, XL). The first 300 will be autographed by Muggy. All pre-sale participants will be entered in a drawing for the Polaris record on white vinyl, the original CD, a Polaris hat, a Muggy handwritten lyric sheet and a genuine Petunia tattoo. 2 runners up will receive the Great Big Happy Moonface cassingle with an autographed Mezzotint old school brand new walkman! Wow.

You can now prove to friends without a doubt they are actually singing "Doncha talk back" and not "Does you dog bite?" in the chorus of "Hey Sandy."

The TV show’s Mr. Tastee returned to help promote the upcoming album in a video the band released along with the album announcement. Mr. Tastee had a recurring role in the show as a mysterious ice cream vendor who always wore his mascot costume. The show once aired an episode centering around Mr. Tastee, and how he symbolized summer for the kids. The character had been an enigma during the show, with the kids never being able to learn much about Mr. Tastee because he preferred his privacy.

Polaris had formed as a one-off musical project for the television show, however the band is made up of the members who form Miracle Legion. As Polaris, the group released numerous songs for the television show, including the show’s theme song, “Hey Sandy” and “Summerbaby.” All of the songs that Polaris had released for the show will be included on Music from the Adventures of Pete and Pete.

The band had initially planned on touring this year in support of the album’s release, however the show has been put on hold until after the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Hopefully that will happen as soon as the world gets back to normal. Polaris first performed outside of The Adventures of Pete & Pete after the series ended in 1996 during a reunion event in 2012. The band then did a tour around the United States in 2014.

Update (9/13) - Polaris will be visiting the Bay Area to perform for all of their Bay Arean fans at The Chapel in San Francisco on February 17th in the year 2021. This is an event not to be missed[...].

Location: The Chapel
Address: 777 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA 94110

Nickelodeon Ventures Into The Monsterverse In Original Animated Series Ollie’s Pack

Ollie, his two best friends, and an otherworldly backpack, embark on monstrous adventures in Nickelodeon’s new original action-comedy series, Ollie’s Pack, premiering on Nickelodeon Australia and New Zealand on Monday, September 21, at 4pm (AEST).

Produced by Nelvana, the 26-episode, 2D-animated series follows the adventures of Ollie, who is faced with the struggles of tween life and the responsibility of controlling an entire dimension of monsters when he discovers his backpack is a powerful portal to Monsterverse.

Together with Cleo and Bernie, the three friends must protect the earth from the horrifying monsters that have escaped, while calling on the more helpful monsters to help them with their everyday kid problems, including sneaking into movies and winning their school’s Battle of the Bands contest.

In the first episode, “The Chosen One…Stinks,” Ollie’s stinky sweat is a hot commodity in the Monsterverse so he exchanges it with a monster who offers to do his laundry.

Then in “Not Another Superhero Movie,” Ollie and his friends utilise a monster’s powers to make an epic superhero movie for their film club.

The series stars James Hartnett (Cupcake & Dino) as Ollie, an ordinary, impulsive, and creative kid who has been given the status of ‘Chosen One’ and ‘Keeper of the Pack’, Ana Sani (Mysticons) as Cleo, the brave and adventurous comic relief, and David Berni (Rocket Monkeys) as Bernie, the nervy and logical voice of reason.

Along the way, audiences will be introduced to some larger than life monsters including Andre and Bev, a bounty hunting double act, Major Snooch, a high ranking official in the Ministry of Chosen One Affairs, and Rance, a weaselly petty thief in utter denial about his boldfaced stealing.

Ollie’s Pack made its world premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. in April 2020, and is slated to debut internationally later this year, reaching over 170 countries and territories.

The series originated from “Monster Pack,” an original short made for Nickelodeon’s 2013 Animated Shorts Program. Creators Pedro Eboli (Cupcake & Dino) and Graham Peterson (Rick & Morty) met at the Vancouver Film School and have now been friends for over 10 years. Pedro is a creator, producer, director and animator from Rio de Janeiro, while Graham is an animation supervisor and instructor at local and overseas studios.

'Blues Clues & You!' Host Joshua Dela Cruz Brings the Kindness of Mr. Rogers to Children's Programming

Blues Clues & You host Joshua Dela Cruz aspires to bring the same hope and optimism to children’s programming that Fred Rogers showcased in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.

“Because we are human there are days when things don’t look so hopeful and things kind of wear down on us a lot more,” Dela Cruz shared with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “But then we think about where we are as a society and where we were as a society undoubtedly things are getting better.”

“Things are still not great,” he admitted. “But it’s that progress that maybe 70 years ago my wife and I wouldn’t have been able to get married, which is something to look back on as how we’ve come a long way. And we have so much further to go.” Dela Cruz is of Filipino descent and his wife is white.

Joshua Dela Cruz views Fred Rogers as a gold standard in children’s programming

The country was in somewhat similar position when Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood began airing in 1968. Civil unrest, war, and anger rippled across the U.S. and Rogers found ways to bring children and adults together.

“Fred Rogers was a genius in his approach to children’s television,” Dela Cruz said. “I’m just an actor and I have a team of geniuses that I work for that are creating the show that we work together on.”

“Especially today when the world is getting so much more smaller and smaller,” he said. “It’s important for us to realize that there are a lot of different perspectives on this one thing. And is there a way to find the least violent course of action where we can be understanding that we don’t have to agree.”

“But we also need to agree that we’re talking about humans and not numbers or criminals,” Dela Cruz added. “So why is this thing happening? And is there any way to solve that issue? Yelling at each other is never going to get anything done. And playing the blame game never gets anything done.”

“The only way we can truly solve something is if we talk about it,” he remarked. “If we work together in order to help people. I think that that’s kind of the thing where we’re in a very strange place where it’s us versus them when it’s all us.”

Dela Cruz has hope for the future

“But progress is coming,” Dela Cruz shared. “And I think that the hopeful thing about all of this is that we’re having such a serious conversation about all of it. And so it does leave us more hopeful in those times where it’s especially dark.”

He understands the weighty responsibility parents are currently facing between balancing distance learning due to the on-going COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and racial injustice in the country. “I can’t imagine the responsibility that parents have in tackling these issues in a way that kids can comprehend and understand,” he said. “And, you know, in some ways I think they can understand much better than we can. It’s right and wrong.”

“So it’s really our responsibility, we feel, to dive deeper and to try to remove our initial emotional response to get a fuller picture,” he explained.

Comedy Central Reportedly Shelves ‘The Ren & Stimpy Show’ Reboot

Update (9/14) - Bob Camp, co-founder of the studio that created Ren & Stimpy and successor to the show after John K's firing from Nickelodeon is reporting that he's heard that Comedy Central has decided to shelve the Ren & Stimpy reboot. Please note that this is unconfirmed. The news comes as a petition launched by Robyn Byrd, who publicly accused Kricfalusi of having a relationship with her during the 1990s, launched a online petition to get the project scrapped, which has garnered over 12,000 signatures.

As part of a major push into adult animation, Comedy Central has given a series green light to a reimagening of Nickelodeon's cult Emmy-nominated animated series The Ren & Stimpy Show— 25 years after ending the Nicktoons' original run.

The Nickelodeon cartoon that gave the world Powdered Toast Man, Log, Canadian Kilted Yaksmen, Salve, every Christmas' number-one toy, 'Don't Whiz on the Electric Fence', and a shocking number of crudely rendered rubber nipples is set to return in a new form.

Comedy Central has been tapping into IP across ViacomCBS to build an original animated slate around stalwart South Park. The Ren & Stimpy Show will join the recently announced Beavis and Butt-Head reboot from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie on Comedy Central.

All four shows are being produced by ViacomCBS' in-house production studios, with Nickelodeon — home to the original Ren & Stimpy— overseeing the new take.

a new creative team at Nickelodeon Animation Studios will helm the project.

Update (8/14) - In a bit of a blow to fans, Bob Camp, co-founder of the studio that created Ren & Stimpy and successor to the show after John K's firing from Nickelodeon, will reportedly not be returning for the reboot. Though Camp seems unsurprised by his exclusion from the show's return.

The series followed the adventures of title characters Ren, an emotionally unstable Chihuahua, and Stimpy, a good-natured yet dimwitted cat often referred to by his pal as "EEEDIOT". (Their proper names are Ren Hoeck and Stimpson J. Cat.) It aired for nearly 100 episodes over five seasons on Nickelodeon, ending in December 1995. The following year, the series had a run on MTV.

Billy West, the voice of Stimpy — and of Ren (for three seasons) — is expected to return to the revival, along with several of the original writers.

It will not, however, involve Ren & Stimpy creator John Kricfalusi, whom a source tells Variety will have no creative input into and will receive no financial remuneration from the new series. Kricfalusi was accused in a 2018 Buzzfeed article of sexually abusing teenage girls.

Details beyond what was mentioned today are limited, including who is in the writer's room, when it will premiere, and how many episodes are attached.

“I want to thank our partners at Nick Animation as we re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.

The announcement comes in conjunction with the news that ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group has tapped Marvel Studios and Fox Entertainment alum Grant Gish to lead a newly created adult animation unit. Shows under his oversight include the Ren & Stimpy reboot, Comedy Central’s Beavis & Butt-Head revival, the Tracee Ellis Ross-led Daria spinoff, Jodie, as well as MTV’s reboot of Clone High.

“Grant has incredible instincts and a supercharged passion for animation. Along with his extraordinary reputation and impressive successes with some of the biggest hits in the genre, from Bob’s Burgers to American Dad– his vision is exactly what we’re looking for to lead our adult animation unit,” said Diaz.

“I grew up on MTV’s Animation Studios content where I’d run home from school to watch Beavis and Butt-Head eating pretzels on my couch,” added Gish. “With access to such a vast library of IP that will enable us to break through the clutter coupled with the opportunity to create a fresh slate, I couldn’t be more excited to join the E&Y Group that’s growing in droves under Chris and Nina’s leadership.”

Gish joins ViacomCBS from Marvel Studios, where he launched the Adult Comedy and Animation group within the former Marvel Television division. As VP of comedy and animation Gish spearheaded Marvel’s foray into half-hour comedy and adult animation with the upcoming Hulu series M.O.D.O.K. and Hit-Monkey. Before that, Gish served as VP, Animation Development & Current Programming, 20th Century Fox TV where he helped develop the Emmy-winning series Bob’s Burgers and oversaw American Dad. He also did a stint at Good Humor TV, where he worked on HBO’s animated series The Life & Times Of Tim and helped develop Good Vibes.

“We are thrilled to have Grant lead our new Adult Animation unit as we expedite the rapid expansion of our adult animation content,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS’s entertainment and youth group, in a statement. “Adult Animation is an incredibly powerful asset that truly works on every platform and around the world. It’s also pandemic-proof, which is why we are reimagining many of our beloved iconic [properties], unlocking incredible value.”

Gish’s hiring fits into ViacomCBS’ move to build content verticals across brands within the Entertainment & Youth Groups and is part of the Group’s broader strategy as they look to evolve from cable to content, developing and producing content for all platforms, including for ViacomCBS upcoming new shared streaming service (currently CBS All Access), linear cable networks, and digital platforms worldwide.

Nickelodeon launched the original Ren & Stimpy alongside Rugrats and Doug in 1991, where it quickly catapulted into the pop culture zeitgeist with its dark humor, vivid imagination and critical acclaim. The iconic dog and cat duo are consistently ranked among the top animated characters of all time.

Despite being a children’s show, Ren & Stimpy didn’t shy away from the dark or grotesque, and incorporated themes and jokes considered more “adult.” The series pushed many boundaries and has long been hailed for its ambitious artistry, but its legacy is controversial. Creator John Kricfalusi was famously fired from the show after repeated clashes with the network over production delays and the offensive content. Nickelodeon also took heat over the lack of educational value the show brought. Multiple segments were edited to remove references to religion, politics and alcohol. Fans would later discover through John K’s own airing of dirty laundry that the network had censored and buried episodes over hidden sex jokes that crossed the line.

The show’s notorious gross-out humor, scathing parody, and a meticulous art style that earned it critical acclaim also led to its downfall; the show eventually flamed out after John K’s dominating work style caused strife with the network and the staff, causing the whole operation to collapse at the height of its popularity.

Other titles from that era of television have been making comebacks in various forms, including the Rocko's Modern Life movie on Netflix, and Rugrats as a new TV series, set to premiere on Nickelodeon in 2021.

Kricfalusi has had a busy career, including the creation of shows like The Goddamn George Liquor Program and The Ripping Friends, numerous commercials and shorts, two The Simpsons couch gags, directing 100 episodes of The Powerpuff Girls, and producing music videos for Miley Cyrus.

John K would go on to try and replicate the success of Ren & Stimpy without the restraint of a kid’s network, churning out Ren & Stimpy’s Adult Cartoon Party, but it turned out the censorship battles made the show what it was. Walking the line was more entertaining than anything explicit. The series aired on the former Spike (now Paramount Network). Six episodes were produced as part of the animated programming block, but only three aired. A failure that put John K on an independent track.

The original cartoon series developed a loyal cult audience, with celebrities including Frank Zappa, Soleil Moon Frye, Mark Hamill and Phil Hartman playing incidental characters. The series also expanded into consumer products, including plush, video games and comics.

In 2018, John K. faced his reckoning: two women accused John K of preying on and sexually harassing them while they were underage, a history of behavior the animator didn’t deny. As many of his former staff say in the upcoming documentary Happy Happy Joy Joy, which chronicles the rise and fall of the series, the misconduct put the entire legacy of Ren & Stimpy in question. The documentary hits streaming services Aug. 14.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” said McCarthy. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

He added: "We are going to give them the edgy, irreverent, comedic voice that defined them but we’re going to tell all new stories and bring in new character."

Comedy Central is already home to the groundbreaking animated series South Park, now in its 23rd season. It’s been renewed through its 26th season, airs worldwide in over 130 countries in 30 different languages and has enjoyed multi-platform success. It was the top animated series on Hulu and now streams exclusively on HBO Max.

Meanwhile, a revival of the cult animated series Clone High (2002-03) will return to sister network MTV with original series creators Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Bill Lawrence.

“We’re not making the same shows,” says McCarthy, president, Entertainment & Youth Group, ViacomCBS. “The world has changed so much. To me they’re not remakes but re-imaginings. Beavis and Butt-Head, for instance, was so defined by GenXers, my generation, who are now having kids and raising GenZers.

This animation push is part-and-parcel of the ratings success enjoyed by corporate parent ViacomCBS, whose portfolio includes Paramount Network (and its hit cable series Yellowstone, starring Kevin Costner) and Pop TV, which found its breakout series in the Emmy-nominated comedy Schitt’s Creek, which ended its six-season run in April.

“We’re really making a dramatic shift on Comedy Central, where South Park is killing it,” McCarthy says. “The nice thing about animation is it helps you take the hard truth of life and process these through funny jokes — even when they’re not funny.

“It’s a visual manifestation of pure insanity… and the rise of adult animation is skyrocketing.”

Comedy Central is also the home of syndicated repeats of adult animated series including BoJack Horseman, Mike Judge's King of the Hill and Seth MacFarlane's The Cleveland Show. (It's worth noting that Judge and co-creator Greg Daniels had "preliminary conversations" with Fox for a King of the Hill revival in 2017.)

This is McCarthy's latest major programming acquisition for Comedy Central since he took over from former network president Kent Alterman as part of a larger ViacomCBS executive consolidation. Since then, Comedy Central has canceled Alternatino With Arturo Castro (which moved to Quibi) and Lights Out With David Spade while renewing its Crank Yankers revival, Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens and Tosh.0 (for four more seasons).

Adult animation continues to be a growth genre on broadcast, cable and streaming platforms. In success, shows like Rick and Morty repeat well and bring in younger audiences and can often lead to profitable merchandising lines. Franchises like Family Guy and Bob's Burgers, for example, are considered to be worth billions. What's more, animated series are able to be produced remotely during the (COVID-19) coronavirus pandemic that has shut down hundreds of film and TV projects.

In 2018, Kricfalusi offered something nearing apology to two women who had accused him of grooming them for sexual relationships when they were 13 and 15, blaming undiagnosed bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

"The last thing I want to do is aggravate bad feelings that already exist," he wrote. "These feelings are obviously real and strong and I understand them much better now.

"It’s not pretty to have to stare myself in the face and see myself the way those who I’ve hurt see me. I imagine many other men are waking up and feeling the shame I’ve felt for years. I welcome a social change in our attitudes towards women and how we should treat them with respect and equality."

The Ren & Stimpy Show is currently available to stream on CBS All Access.

Below is Comedy Central's official press release announcing the news!:

Comedy Central greenlights reimagined The Ren & Stimpy Show

Show joins growing roster of iconic adult animation hits at ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group, including South Park and reinventions of Beavis & Butt-Head, Clone High and Jodie

New York – August 5, 2020 – Today, Comedy Central announced a reimagination of the Emmy®-nominated cult hit The Ren & Stimpy Show as it continues to double down on adult-focused animation, unlocking and reinventing a treasure chest of IP across ViacomCBS to complement South Park, including the newly announced Beavis and Butt-Head from Mike Judge and Daria spin-off Jodie.

“I want to thank our partners at Nick Animation as we re-imagine these iconic characters with a new creative team,” said Nina L. Diaz, President of Content and Chief Creative Officer for ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group.”

Nickelodeon launched the original Ren & Stimpy alongside Rugrats and Doug in 1991, where it quickly catapulted into the pop culture zeitgeist with its dark humor, vivid imagination and critical acclaim. Often thought of as an adult series at the time, the iconic dog and cat duo are consistently ranked among the top animated characters of all time.

“We are excited to reinvent this iconic franchise with a new creative team and our partners at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio,” said Chris McCarthy, President of ViacomCBS Entertainment & Youth Group. “Ren & Stimpy joins our rapidly expanding roster of adult animation including South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High as we continue to reimagine our treasure chest of beloved IP for new generations.”

From CBR:

After Ren & Stimpy's Troubled History, a Reboot Is Still Worth It

The Ren & Stimpy Show is making a comeback, but given the show's troubled history, maybe the reboot shouldn't happen.

Though the pop culture hit The Ren & Stimpy Show is coming back to Comedy Central with a "re-imagined" take on the classic '90s animated series, it's unclear if a resurrection is really worth the trouble because of the show's dark history, However, even though the show comes with some unwanted baggage that Comedy Central would love to leave buried, with a lot of it excluded from the reboot, the pros might just outweigh the cons.

One can't think of iconic '90s cartoons without Ren & Stimpy. The show was a trailblazer, garnering widespread critical acclaim and anchoring Nickelodeon's cartoon block with Rugrats and Doug. The show ingrained itself into pop culture and would actually influence future cartoons such as SpongeBob SquarePants. Considering its impact on a generation of fans and its influence on a newer one, rebooting this series for another generation to enjoy would actually do more good than harm.

Seeing as this isn't the first time a Ren & Stimpy reboot has been attempted, there definitely seems to be a market for this innovative program. This time, however, Comedy Central can get this reboot right and avoid the same mistakes that the previous incarnations had suffered through. There's no reason why a new generation can't enjoy classic characters like Mr. Horse, Muddy Mudskipper and Powdered Toast Man without thinking of the baggage of the previous two series.

One of the main reasons for that is most of the toxicity behind Ren & Stimpy won't be returning. The show's creator, John Kricfalusi, won't be involved with the reboot after a slew of sexual harassment accusations, meaning his constant disagreements with Nickelodeon that caused episodes to be late or shelved are a thing of the past. On top of that, many of the show's original writers, including the original voice of Stimpson J. Cat, Billy West, are expected to return.

However, on a slightly disappointing albeit surprising note, Bob Camp, co-founder of the studio that created Ren & Stimpy and successor to the show after John K's firing from Nickelodeon, will not be returning. Though Camp seems unsurprised by his exclusion from the show's return, many fans believe the show will lose its appeal without his involvement. Although, the 2003 reboot Ren & Stimpy: Adult Party Cartoon had John K's fingerprints all over it and that reboot couldn't even survive more than three episodes before Spike TV pulled the plug, meaning the old creative team may not have the charm it used to.

Sure, without Ren & Stimpy's original creators, the show may lack some of its original pizzazz, but in the long run, losing them may actually be another positive. Many original series episodes under Camp's direction were so bad that not even the History Eraser Button can remove them from memory. To put it simply, without Bob Camp and John K's influence, the new Ren & Stimpy should be an improvement.

With that being said, though, despite all the positives of a reboot, the show's behind-the-scenes chaos may be too much for Comedy Central to overcome. While it's great that he no longer has anything to do with the show, the stigma that John K left will undoubtedly linger over the reboot series. At a time where people have had enough of abusive people being in power, bringing back a show one had a hand in creating is a difficult thing to sell.

In addition to past controversies hanging over the show, it's fair to wonder if people really want more Ren & Stimpy. Reboots of Beavis and Butt-Head and Clone High are already in the works, as well as a spin-off of Daria, creating what would seem to be an overabundance of remakes, all stemming from Comedy Central. Unfortunately, reboots tend to be frowned upon as of late, with fans and critics alike panning them as unoriginal. Hopefully, that isn't the case with Ren & Stimpy, as the show has a lot more to offer audiences than the drama it has become synonymous with.

Jerry Beck Once Wrote a Book About the History of Nickelodeon

Written by Jerry Beck for Animation Scoop:

I Wrote A Book About the History of Nickelodeon That No One Has Ever Seen

Five years ago I spent 12 months on a special project that has never seen the light of day.

I wrote a history of Nickelodeon – for Nickelodeon – an elaborate in-house book project that was pure pleasure to research and write. It included tipped-in booklets featuring interviews with Gerry Laybourne, Herb Scannell, Fred Seibert, Vanessa Coffey, Albie Hecht, and Mary Harrington. It had all kinds of fold-outs and pop-outs, mini-comics and original posters. The graphics, the photos and art, were amazing. The actual text is pretty good too.

Don’t ask me where you can get one – I was only given one “author’s copy” (photo above) hot off the press, so I know it was published. The story I heard is that only 1000 copies were created. And outside of the interviewees and few other Nick execs at the time, no one else I know got a copy. It was never on Amazon; It was never for sale.

In fact, as I understand it, it was never intended for sale. It was created as a gift to celebrate the network’s anniversary, and to champion its talent – artists still at Nick and past creatives who contributed to building the channel. It was an effort to help garner goodwill towards Nick at a time when its fortunes were beginning to droop (the company has since bounded back). But apparently those thousand printed copies sat in a storeroom somewhere – and rumor has it they may have been destroyed. I don’t really know.

Initiated by then Nick Animation president Russell Hicks (an 18-year veteran of the company who rose through the ranks by developing the Nick’s Shorts program and who ultimately green lit The Loud House), I was contacted to join the project as a work-for-hire, to pen text that spanned the beginnings of the channel as component of Time-Warners Qube experiment in Columbus Ohio, through its earliest original live and animated programming – and all they way up to its current successes with Spongebob and Dora.

My own involvement with Nickelodeon goes back to 1994 when I was hired by Gerry Laybourne to develop animated features for Nickelodeon Movies. I’d later write two books for the company, Not Just Cartoons: Nicktoons (2007) and The Spongebob Squarepants Experience (2013) – and produced a pilot, Hornswiggle.

The same week I received my author’s copy of this book in 2016, word hit the trades that Russell had resigned his position at Nickelodeon. Management changes were afoot. I wondered if this would affect the book… and it did. Russell had written the book’s foreword and his photo adorned a full page. My guess is they didn’t want to give the book away when the person introducing it was now no longer part of the company.

I’d kept quiet about the project the past few years – but I recently came across two posts about the book (both online since 2016), both from folks involved with its production. Since this thing isn’t a secret anymore, I might as well call attention to it – even if you can’t see it. You can at least see some of the layouts and get an idea of what it looked like.

Both pieces online were posted by Struck, the design firm in Utah who pulled the book together (and from what I gathered, this was the first book this studio ever produced). This first link is by Brent Watts, one of Struck’s founders, and appears on the Medium blog. Brett is a hell of a nice guy and his company is top notch.

The second post is on Behance.net, a platform for designers. Here you’ll see more of the clever designs and layouts Struck created based on information I provided.

You Can’t Do That On Television: The Rebellious History of Nickelodeon has no ISBN number, there are no used copies on eBay, it has no historical footprint. I would assume the trickle of copies that got out to the interviewees and assorted Nick execs will eventually accrue some value, as word of this legendary tome gains more attention. All I can say is it was a joy to assemble.

I want to publicly thank Russell Hicks and Brett Watts for the opportunity to participate in this amazing project. I only wish more people could see it.

From Medium:

You Can’t Do That on Television: The Rebellious History of Nickelodeon

A peek inside the limited edition coffee table book that honors the edgy and groundbreaking animation studio.

Where did you keep the great memorabilia that you grew-up with — the stuff you stored in your shoebox under your bed? Your Michael Jordan rookie card. The stickers you traded for months with your best friend, Knuckles. The boondoggle from summer camp. The rubber band ball it took a year to make from your paper route.

Many of these defining childhood things have been lost over the years. And yet, their memories live on.

For us at Struck, some of these memories resurfaced when — as part of a long-standing relationship — Nickelodeon asked us to design a limited edition coffee table book in celebration of the studio’s landmark 25th anniversary.

We’ve worked with Nick for a few years now — our very first project involved designing a logo for SpongeBob. And when we first stepped into the studio a couple of years ago, we knew we were walking on fertile ground.

From that moment on, in all our work with Nick — including designing creator portraits, a poster series, conception of the studio’s new offices and redesign of its website — we’ve felt incredibly fortunate to act as stewards for a brand so playful. One that has defined creativity and originality.

This limited edition book, You Can’t Do That on Television: The Rebellious History of Nickelodeon, marks the pinnacle in our history with Nick and brings us full circle back to the studio’s beating heart — its creators and origin story. The colorful pages of the book combine original sketches, pop-outs and text by Jerry Beck to weave together the edgy and groundbreaking history that is Nickelodeon Animation Studio. Beginning with the launch of Ren and Stimpy, Rugrats and Doug in 1991, to becoming a global brand, and then on into the rocket-fueled future of animation.

During the conception of the project, we realized that print would be the best medium to pull together the history of Nickelodeon and the studio’s success, memorializing Nick’s story in the written form.

Print provides an emotional connection that allows us to experience the tactual nature of brand expression.

For, there are some things you can’t experience on TV. Like the turn of an oversized page. The play between odd shaped, die-cut funky paper. The texture and smell of ink. Discovery sketches and raw concepts scribbled on a napkin. Actual tennis shoe laces weaving Nick’s history into a timeline as a subway map.

This book was designed by kids, for kids.

In the book, you can literally see the process Nick went through when beginning a cable channel that would eventually become a global brand. It unfolds before you on each page. You start to understand that it took a village of superbly talented, unleashed creative to make it all happen.

This oversized history book defines a brand that sparked many of the emotions of childhood. Memories stored in a shoebox under the bed. Rekindled images of Sandy and Patrick from Spongebob, Salute Your Shorts and Ren and Stimpy. Memories you can touch and react to while you eat your favorite cereal.
You can’t do that on TV.

History of Nickelodeon monograph

About:

When Nickelodeon launched on televisions over 25 years ago, the landscape of children’s programming was dominated by poorly produced animation with a focus on selling toys. Nickelodeon changed that by creating television for kids, by kids. At turns silly, sad and gross, Nickelodeon revolutionized children’s TV and created some of the most iconic characters of the last quarter century. Struck in collaboration with Nickelodeon Animation Studio created a sumptuous coffee table book to capture the the Nick story in all it’s wacky glory.

The limited edition book, You Can’t Do That on Television: The Rebellious History of Nickelodeon, is the brainchild of Russell Hicks, President of Content Development and Production for Nickelodeon. In the years leading up to the book’s fruition, Hicks tossed around the idea of the need for something that pulled together the history of Nickelodeon and the studio’s success.

Netflix Adds Audio Descriptions to 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ just got more accessible to blind audiences

Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked.

Then, everything changed again when Netflix added audio descriptions to Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Filmmaker James Rath, who was born legally blind, tweeted on Friday (September 11) that blind audiences and fans can now enjoy Nickelodeon's beloved animated series.

The streaming service acquired the rights to all three seasons of the series in May, and since then many have turned to its fantastic plot in quarantine. The series made history as the first title to spend 65 days in the top 10 streamed series on Netflix in what has been called a "stunning second life" for the series.

“So audio descriptions are cool,” Rath said in a YouTube video. “It doesn’t interrupt the dialog of most films and TV shows. It’s meant to be a narration in between dialog to help let you know the important narrative part.”

Netflix added audio descriptions to Avatar as well as its new documentary-drama hybrid The Social Dilemma and aesthetic favorite Get Organized With the Home Edit show on Friday, according to the Audio Description Project.

Netflix’s Access Services options include audio descriptions alongside features like assistive listening systems, closed captions, keyboard shortcuts, screen readers, subtitles and voice commands, which help those with hearing, sight or physical mobility needs access the platform’s content.

Blind people, of course, watch TV too, as Rath pointed out on YouTube. “Much like smartphones and computers, smart TVs have an operating system,” he said. “And an operating system allows you to navigate things, oftentimes with accessibility. Accessibility meaning letting people have access, even if they have a disability.”

One user added that earthbending master Toph Beifong from Avatar, who was blind since birth, would have benefited from the changes too. “Toph can finally see herself on tv,” they wrote.

Rath also clarified that both the TV series and the controversial live-action movie from 2010, The Last Airbender, now feature audio descriptions on Netflix.

A live-action adaptation of the series is also in the works at Netflix — even after the creators (Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko) announced they were leaving the project in August.

“When Netflix brought me on board to run this series alongside Mike two years ago, they made a very public promise to support our vision,” Konietzko shared on Instagram. “Unfortunately, there was no follow-through on that promise… We ultimately came to the belief that we would not be able to meaningfully guide the direction of the series.”

Well, friends... there you have it. Big sigh. 💔⬇️💔 I’m sure many of you will understandably want to know more and will ask me questions in the comments, here and on subsequent posts and live-streams and in-person encounters and everywhere else ad infinitum. I wish I could explain things in greater detail, but the above statement is really all I can say about the matter so I won’t be answering any of those. I encourage you to head over to my partner Michael DiMartino’s account to get his take on our departure too: @mike_dante_d Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of the Avatar: The Last Airbender fans, and I’m sorry our involvement in the live-action project did not work out. Time to get on with my life. Onward and upward. 💙 Love, Bryan #avatarthelastairbender #cocreators #michaeldimatino #bryankonietzko #bryke #atla #liveactionseries #netflix
