The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) has announced the exciting news that the 2020 SCAD AnimationFest will be hosting a "Creator Conversation" session with Bryan Konietzko, co-creator of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender on Saturday, September 26, 2020 at 5 p.m. ET!


SCAD AnimationFest returns for a fourth year with an all-new virtual setting, offering unparalleled access to titans of animation, special screenings, insightful presentations, and a few surprises along the way. Eventgoers are invited to the digital celebration of this lively artform and experience two days of animated excitement right from their computer, tablet, or mobile device.

The SCAD AnimationFest, one of the more academically notable animation festivals in the animation industry's calendar, usually takes place each fall in Atlanta. This year, the festival will take on a virtual twist for the first time ever.

The 2020 SCAD AnimationFest will take place on Saturday, September 25 and Sunday, September 26, and it will feature programming that represents many of the university’s top-ranked degree programs: including animation, visual effects, motion media design, film & television, along with interactive design and game development.

The festival will also showcase many SCAD alumni who have become leaders in their creative careers, as well as standout student work.

"The profession of animation is one of the creative winners of 2020, because virtual collaboration has long been a practice in the industry -- where teams work together from across the world to write, produce, score, and give voice to these films,” SCAD president Paula Wallace said in a statement.

Heavy hitters in the film and television industry are expected to engage in this year’s festival. Exclusive screenings, panel discussions, visual presentations and top talent and alumni from Netflix, Epic Games, Pixar, Nickelodeon, Dreamworks, Amazon, and more will be available to eventgoers.

“Animation films and shows have actually increased production during the pandemic! SCAD AnimationFest finds the industry riding high and invites our SCAD students into the very heart of it, to connect with our Bees in the industry and other filmmakers elevating animation to become the leading form in world entertainment,” Wallace added.

Creator Conversation: Bryan Konietzko on 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'

In the summer of 2020, Avatar: The Last Airbender made history as the first series to spend 65 days in the top 10 streamed series on Netflix in what has been called a "stunning second life" for the series. The Peabody Award-winning series, which centers around 12-year-old Aang as he discovers the power and responsibility of being an Avatar and the last of the Airbenders, first ran on Nickelodeon from 2005-08. With its comprehensive world-building and enduring themes, the series has resonated with audiences and earned a reputation for its political relevance and sophisticated storytelling. SAN DIEGO, Sept. 9, 2020 -- A-list celebrities and leading entertainment brands, including Netflix, Sony Pictures, Facebook Watch, Nickelodeon, STX Entertainment, and more, will take the virtual stage at L'ATTITUDE 2020 in our country's first national dialogue entitled, "The New Mainstream Economy: Restart and Rebound," being driven by U.S. Latinos. National media, c-suite executives, and elected officials will also participate in the national forum live-cast September 24-27.

Entering its third year, L'ATTITUDE has partnered with multi-platinum Grammy winner and entrepreneur Emilio Estefan to further build and expand the program, given his vast experience in the entertainment industry. The entertainment program will also feature LATINXT, the annual track that serves as a launch pad for the industry to present new content featuring Latino talent, while celebrating the U.S. Latino voices creating positive cultural and economic impact in the media and entertainment sector.

"Last year when I received an award at L'ATTITUDE and witnessed first hand the importance of the event as a unique forum to celebrate the contributions of U.S. Latinos and capitalize on our profound influence in this country, I immediately wanted to be involved," said Estefan. "The first two years have attracted world-class celebrities, breakthrough talent, and national media attention, so we're really excited about how the lineup is shaping up this year, and we can't wait to showcase all the artistry that's positively impacting American culture and helping to redefine the New Mainstream."

The L'ATTITUDE event agenda will feature four days of virtual sessions covering business, finance, politics, sports, and entertainment, including panels on Latin music, upcoming streaming, film, and TV content, and an important dialogue about U.S Latino representation in all facets of the industry. Additionally, the Latino Donor Collaborative will present its latest findings on the progress that leading entertainment and media companies are making in identifying, hiring and featuring U.S. Latinos and leveraging the revenue potential of the New Mainstream Economy.

"The entertainment industry is leaving money on the table by not including U.S. Latinos in front of and behind the camera, given the fact that Latino consumers over-index in entertainment across the board and in virtually all other sectors. It is a basic understanding of marketing that people like to see themselves and their contexts when viewing ads or content. "There have been multiple studies bringing facts and data to light that shows that Latinos are still extremely underrepresented in media and entertainment, and too often relegated to minor roles and stereotypical narratives. The upcoming Facebook Watch talk show, Red Table Talk: The Estefans, will also be featured at L'ATTITUDE and will engage attendees with three generations of iconic Latina women: Gloria Estefan, Lili Estefan, and Emily Estefan. Zimbabwean Motorcross Champion Tanya Muzinda Shortlisted for Nickelodeon 'Kid of the Year' Award

Motorcross champion Tanyaradzwa 'Tanya' Muzinda has been named as a finalist in the first-ever Kid of the Year awards!


The 2015 Junior Sportswoman Of The Year from Zimbabwe broke the news on Twitter expressing her gratitude for the nomination that will likely put Zimbabwe on the global stage.

"I am honoured to have made shortlist for Nickelodeon Kid Of The Year 2020 with Time Magazine, even if l don't win this Award being alongside these incredible kids gives me hope for a better future. Celebrating kids around the world who are inspiring in their communities," Muzinda wrote.

Tanya, who is the honorary ambassador of the European Union to Zimbabwe for Youth, Gender, Sports and Development has credited her love and success in the sport to her father who was a biker and taught her how to ride a bike.

Kid of the Year is Nickelodeon, TIME and TIME for Kids' brand new multiplatform initiative that recognizes extraordinary young leaders aged 8-16 who are making a positive impact in their communities! Kids doing incredible and inspiring things to make the world a better place were nominated by their parents, teachers, friends and more.


Five honorees will be featured in a TV special—hosted by Kids' Choice Awards winner Trevor Noah (The Daily Show with Trevor Noah) and simulcast on Nickelodeon and the CBS Television Network in the U.S. in December--with one kid ultimately being recognized as TIME Kid of the Year and featured on a cover of TIME with a companion story in TIME For Kids.

VIACOMCBS NETWORKS AFRICA: LEVERAGING THE POWER OF PARENTS


JOHANNESBURG 27 AUGUST 2020 – Parents direct billions of dollars spent globally each year. Their control on family spending has a direct impact on brands and how these brands choose to reach their audiences. Gone are the days of yesteryear where parents believed that children were meant to be seen and not heard. A new generation of parents has emerged and interestingly, these parents have made their children part of the decision-making process in the household.

As families navigate the new normal of home schooling and quarantining during this Covid-19 pandemic, brands have the opportunity to tap into this behaviour and expand their consumer reach.

Research conducted by ViacomCBS Networks Africa on families shows that today’s kids and parents around the world have an interesting dynamic around brand choices and decision making. The path to purchase in households (with children) is often a negotiation between children and parents and children have been found to have the upper hand.

In the study, 87% of parents said that they initiate the purchase process in the household, often identifying what they need to buy. Then, they will let their children know about those needs and both parties will collaborate in evaluating their options.

Our study has found that both kids and parents are influenced by rational and emotional drivers. Emotion, however, is the primary driver behind decision making. Rationally, parents want to know how much a product costs and whether their kids will enjoy it. From an emotional perspective, parents are now seeking brands that allow them to spend time interacting as a family and help them remain heroes in the eyes of their kids.

Through our research, we found that millennial upbringing, kids’ unprecedented access to tech, financial awareness and family closeness all play a role as key drivers to family collaboration in the path to purchase. We will delve deeper into understanding millennial upbringing as a key driver to collaboration when purchasing from brands.

Previously, Generation Xers parented using a top down approach where children were “seen, not heard”. However, when millennials were born, the shift in parenting started to happen. Children became the center of their parents’ worlds, given a seat at the table and often had the upper hand over their parents.

Additionally, the study shows that a majority of millennials attended daycare, participated in play groups and played organised sports. Because of this, they learned the value of teamwork and collaboration when they were young, and these learnings are reflected in their parenting style now.

With this in mind, parents have reimagined the role of children in the family. Instead of catering to their children’s every whim, they have brought learned values of teamwork and collaboration to the fore. Parents and children now collaborate in the process of decision making in the household.

Kids are reported to influence up to 16 out of 26 categories of all household purchases and as a market segment, cannot be ignored. In fact, ignoring them means missing the mark as a brand completely.

Studies show that the influence of children continues to increase exponentially although the kinds of products marketed to them have remained the same over the years. Children have gained more affluence which makes their market segment worthy of pursuit by businesses.

Their heavy use of media and quick adoption of newer technologies give advertisers a good opportunity to market campaigns using TV, cellphones, iPads, gaming platforms and other digital platforms.

To appeal fully to households, brands also need to target and engage both kids and parents simultaneously. This can be challenging because parents and kids have different needs and interests. However, through balanced messaging that appeals and engages with both parents and children, brands can remain top of mind in any household. It is so essential that brands create messaging that reflects these new collaborative households that have emerged.

As ViacomCBS Networks Africa, we noticed that within our stable, our fastest growing channel during the COVID-19 pandemic across most target markets is Nickelodeon a children’s channel, a family channel. Interestingly, children’s programmes as a genre have seen a 49% growth in viewership, coming second to news at 99%. This serves as testament to the power of family viewing often in favor of the younger audience channels. It also reflects that on TV, the only channels that will have high viewership by both parents and children are the kid’s channels.

Parents, particularly moms, happily oblige to watching children’s programmes frequently in a bid to keep their children happy. The same pattern can be seen in their purchasing patterns. Kids are seen as trusted advisors to their moms on the latest products to buy because they have their pulse on trends and brands that are considered ‘cool’. A high 76% of moms involved in the ViacomCBS study said that they often leverage their kids’ tech skills to research brand information and their kids play a massive part in the products that are bought in the household.

The Channel Director for Nickelodeon Africa, Tasania Parsadh put it best when she said – “Good robust research is what underpins our content creation and understanding of our dual audience of kids and parents. While kids enjoy the animation and fun on the channels, our parents who engage with the content are avid fans too. Co-viewing homes have grown over the years and in SA, we frequently have toddlers, kids, teens and their parents actively watching our Nickelodeon and NickToons channels daily.”

This is an opportunity for brands to leverage the path to purchase, which studies have shown, is driven by a delicate process of negotiation. Parents and kids are working together to decide which products should be purchased in the home. 'Danger Force' Preparing to Restart Production

Danger Force director Mike Caron has revealed on Instagram that, after having to halt production on Danger Force season one earlier this year due to the global COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic, production on the hit Nickelodeon series is about to begin again!


"Ah, geez... we’re going to actually have to start writing new scripts now,"Danger Force creator and executive producer Christopher J. Nowak replied.

Although production on the main Danger Force series has been shut down, the cast and crew of the show have kept fans entertained by making a "virtually produced" content. In April, the cast of Danger Force, along with special guest Frankie Grande, who returned as the fan-favorite villain, Frankini, got together over the internet for a one-off special, "Quaran-kini", which aired on Nickelodeon in May. This was followed up by a series of remotely produced “minisodes” (five episodes), which picked up directly following the events of the “Quaran-kini”. The series of "minisodes" aired on Nickelodeon during August.

Danger Force filmed 7 episodes before lockdown hit, and has 6 episodes left to finish its first season. The last episode to air, "Chapa's Crush" ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, with Henry Hart/Kid Danger (Jace Norman) making a return.


In Danger Force, four kids–Chapa (Havan Flores), Miles (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), Mika (Dana Heath) and Bose (Luca Luhan)–are recruited to attend Swellview Academy for the Gifted (SW.A.G. for short), a school conceived by Captain Man (Cooper Barnes) and brought to life by Schwoz (Michael D. Cohen), after having been accidentally mutated in the fight to save Swellview. While there, the kids must learn to harness their frequently troublesome and sometimes uncontrollable superpowers as they begin to fight crime. Despite the dangerous circumstances of their new lives, the superheroes must keep their real identities a secret from both from their families and the villains who are out to destroy them. Winston Story and Carrie Barrett return to reprise their roles of KLVY news anchors Trent Overunder and Mary Gaperman, respectively.

The series is a spin-off from Henry Danger.

Since its March 28 premiere, Nickelodeon’s latest live-action hit Danger Force has consistently posted double-digit gains in Live + 3 viewing. Most recently, a new episode (April 18, 2020) set a series record in Live + 3 posting a +75% increase with Kids 6-11 versus Live + SameDay viewership.

A second season has yet to be announced.

The series is about to launch on Nickelodeon channels internationally.

The series is created and executive-produced by Christopher J. Nowak (Henry Danger) and produced by Henry Danger stars Cooper Barnes and Jace Norman.

Ithaca College Junior Pens New 'Victorious' Fan Fiction '7 Years Later'

A junior at Ithaca College, a liberal arts college in Ithaca, New York and fan fiction author who goes by the pen name Kashikoi-kun recently penned a new fan fiction inspired by Nickelodeon's hit comedy series Victorious and the on-going COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.


Titled 7 Years Later, the fan-fic reimagines characters from Victorious as Ithaca College graduates who reunite after Cat Valentine’s (Ariana Grande) grandmother dies of COVID-19. Kashikoi-kun wrote the fan fiction after losing one of his own relatives to COVID-19.

"7 years after high school, Cat's grandma dies from COVID-19. The funeral reunites a washed-up Tori with her successful, ex-friends." reads the synopsis.

“It kind of helps me move on or grieve in a creative way and help others hopefully with the same process,” Kashikoi-kun told The Ithacan.

Kashikoi-kun said that he’s noticed an increase in fan fictions being read and written on the internet since the pandemic began. He said 7 Years Later receives approximately 100 views a day, and his other fan fictions have also spiked in readership.

“I feel like creative people are just spending more time writing and creating other forms of art, whether it be fan fictions or scripts,” Kashikoi-kun said. “People just don’t have much to do, and, when you have more views, for some writers that motivates them to write more.”

Nickelodeon's Victorious revolves around aspiring singer Tori Vega (Victoria Justice), a teenager who attends a performing arts high school called Hollywood Arts High School, after taking her older sister Trina's (Daniella Monet) place in a showcase, while getting into screwball situations on a daily basis. On her first day at Hollywood Arts, she meets Andre Harris (Leon Thomas III), Robbie Shapiro (Matt Bennett), Rex Powers (Robbie's puppet), Jade West (Elizabeth Gillies), Cat Valentine (Ariana Grande), and Beck Oliver (Avan Jogia). The series aired for 57 episodes over four seasons between 2010 and 2013, and led to the spin-off Sam & Cat, with Jennette McCurdy's character, Sam Puckett from iCarly.

The cast of Victoriousrecently reunited virtually to celebrate the show's 10th anniversary.
