'Glitch Techs' Co-Creator Confirms Miko Has ADHD

$

Fans have been enjoying Glitch Techs ever since Nickelodeon's long-awaited animated series finally bowed on Netflix in February. One of the great aspects of the show is that it boasts a great cast of characters with different abilities and ethnic backgrounds. And now, Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny, Warren the Ape), one of the co-creators of Glitch Techs has shared a tidbit of information about a character from the show that makes the series even better!

Answering a fan on Twitter, Milano confirmed that in the series, High Five and Miko, the show's two protagonists, are aged 15 and 16, respectively, however, when writing the show's original bible in 2015, they were originally aged 13 and 14, revealing that Nickelodeon asked them to "age up" the characters in 2018.

Milano then revealed that whilst growing up, Miko had some learning difficulties from her ADHD, causing her to be held back a year in school, and that she has just finished junior high in the series!

Yes, Miko has ADHD! I know it doesn't seem like much, but details like this are important. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is on the rise. In the U.S. alone, one in 10 children between ages 5 to 17 years receives an ADHD diagnosis, making this one of the most common childhood neurodevelopmental disorders in the country. And it's not only children who are affected by it - ADHD can affect adults, too.

And that's not all - boys are more than twice as likely as girls to receive an ADHD diagnosis - which makes Miko having ADHD even more unique!

The makers of Glitch Techs have put in a lot of effort to make this show inclusive - including having a Muslim-American female character who wears a hijab - and it shows. Representation matters - people need to see themselves in TV shows and movies, to have heroes just like them. Including a good range of characters is what makes Glitch Techs even more of an absolute gem of a show. It's a pity that Glitch Techs didn't make it to air on Nickelodeon like it was produced to, but like Dan Milano said, "look at it this way, we're reaching a much wider audience of children around the globe on @netflix".

Glitch Techs is available to stream on Netflix today!

Who knows what really happens when a video game starts to glitch? In Glitch Techs, two teens work at a game store as a front for their actual job: Hunting video game monsters who've broken out into the real world for a super secret task force, The Monster Hunters! Nickelodeon's brand-new animated adventure-comedy series follows two newly recruited kids as they battle video game monsters that come to life in the real world.

This brand new animated series features High Five and Miko, two gamers who are recruited into the world of Glitch Techs: kids who battle the video game glitches that enter our world through faulty game consoles!

In the world of Glitch Techs, Hinobi is a huge gaming and tech company that makes massively popular video games consoles. What Hinobi customers do NOT know is that their games sometimes glitch and release dangerous video game creatures into the real world! That’s when the company send the Glitch Techs: a trained support team equipped with an arsenal of fantastic gaming gear designed to capture video game pests and out them back where they belong!

Once a glitch is returned, the Techs must remove any evidence it was there – including the memories of any witnesses! Not only do Glitch Techs fight for the safety of the city, they also work at Hinobi stores, helping customers with tech support and service needs.

Enter Miko and high Five – new recruits who fight glitches and reformat witnesses all before the store closes at 5pm. Talk about a crazy job! Respect the Tech!

Glitch Techs stars Ricardo Hurtado as High Five, Monica Ray as Miko, Luke Youngblood as Mitch, Sandeep Parikh as Haneesh, Zehra Fazal as Zahra, Josh Sussman as Bergy, Eric Lopez as Papi, Dan Milano as BITT and Scott Kreamer as Phil, as well as Scott Kreamer, Betsy Sodaro, Ashly Burch, Greg Nix, Dee Baker, Stephanie Sheh, Jolene Kim, Felicia Day, Cree Summer, Roshon Fegan, Rachael Russakoff, Nolan North and many more. Dee Bradley Baker (Legends of the Hidden Temple, American Dad) and Stephanie Sheh voice Miko's parents, Jane Lynch (iCarly, Glee) will guest star on the series. In addition to voicing some characters, Felicia Day was also a consultant for the series.

Glitch Techs comes from Eric Robles (Fanboy & Chum Chum, The X's, Ni Hao, Kai-Lan) and Dan Milano (Greg the Bunny, Warren the Ape), both hailing from Nickelodeon's Artist Collective, an internal artist-led development program, and is produced at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, Calif. Nickelodeon has picked-up Glitch Techs for an initial 20-episode first season. A second season was commissioned, however, Nickelodeon halted production half-way through. If Glitch Techs season one is successful, there is a chance that the remaining 10 episodes will get animated.

On his Twitter co-creator Milano described the influences and inspiration behind the animated show, “Being childhood fans of the paranormal investigation genre, Glitch Techs is absolutely Eric Robles’ and my love letter to Ghostbusters and Men in Black with plenty of X-Files, Buffy, Doctor Who, Star Trek, and dozens of other stuff we and our collabs grew up on.”

Although there isn't any official Glitch Techs merchandise available to purchase just yet, fans can purchase Holographic Miko & Ally Sticker on Lacelle's official webstore.

'SpongeBob' Star Tom Kenny on Filming New Special From Home, How Lockdown Affects Bikini Bottom

Tom Kenny, who voices SpongeBob himself, also talks about why SpongeBob is a meme star.

The COVID-19 (coronavirus) outbreak hasn't been easy on anyone, and there's one fictional character who'd especially struggle with the isolation of lockdown. Perpetually upbeat SpongeBob SquarePants would be crushed by having to put his social life on hold, Tom Kenny, who voices SpongeBob, told Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, reporting for CNET.

Of all the residents of Bikini Bottom, lockdown is "probably hardest on SpongeBob because he's such a social creature," the Emmy Award-winning actor told Cooper over the phone. SpongeBob "loves going out to work at the Krusty Krab, and he loves being out in the town, and he loves hanging out with his friends, and he loves doing stuff."

SpongeBob's friends might adapt better to quarantine than the sponge himself.

"Squidward is a social distancer just by his personality," Kenny said of SpongeBob's morose co-worker. "Patrick lives under a rock. Sandy is the only mammal for 20,000 leagues around, so she's used to kinda being a lone wolf -- or a lone squirrel. And Mr. Krabs would rather just hang out with his cash register and count his money in the back room than do anything else, so yeah, I think that they're probably doing better than SpongeBob."

Kenny has voiced SpongeBob since the Nickelodeon animated show's 1999 premiere, and he'll voice SpongeBob in a new program, The Stars of SpongeBob Fan Favorites Special, airing Friday, May 5, 2020 on Nickelodeon.

YouTube personality David Dobrik hosts the half-hour show, which features animation from original SpongeBob SquarePants episodes, with the regular voice cast redoing the same lines they delivered years ago. Fans were allowed to vote on a small selection of scenes at NickPlay.com, with the top vote-getters being used in the special.

Kenny said the re-created scenes felt fresh to the voice actors, even though they've done them before. "Some of (the scenes) are 20 years old, so those mental files were dumped long ago by the cast," he said. "So that just kinda adds to the fun."

The actor hopes the fan-favorites special provides some laughs in these strange times. The cast recorded from their homes, as opposed to joining together in one studio as they usually do.

"Cartoons are this kinda comfort-food product," Kenny said, in a friendly, professional voice you'd never connect to SpongeBob's bubbly, perky tones. (He sounds a bit like Breaking Bad and Malcolm in the Middle star Bryan Cranston, actually.) "You can make it in a different way but the end product still looks and tastes and smells the same way it ever did. It's like a Krabby Patty."

Kenny himself is staying busy in his "pineapple under the sea in Studio City (California)," he said. In addition to recording for Rick and Morty -- he's voiced everyone from the ever-helpful Mr. Meeseeks and the cat-like Squanchy to the uber-creepy King Jellybean -- and other projects, he's working on regular SpongeBob SquarePants season 13 episodes as well as the show's upcoming new Nickelodeon spinoff, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years. (Neither the new SpongeBob season nor Kamp Koral have premiere dates yet.)

"Cartoons just translate globally to all cultures better than most pop culture." - Tom Kenny, voice of SpongeBob SquarePants

In the new show, a 10-year-old SpongeBob and young versions of his current pals enjoy crazy adventures at sleepaway camp.

"All the regulars are there, and you get to see them in their nascent days," said Kenny, demonstrating how he squeaks his versatile voice into an even higher register to voice "little-kid SpongeBob."

The spinoff show will be set up in the upcoming third film for SpongeBob and crew -- The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run, which includes flashbacks to the friends' Kamp Koral days. The film is currently scheduled for theatrical release on Aug. 7, having been postponed twice now by the coronavirus outbreak.

While the outbreak hasn't found its way into SpongeBob's fictional world, the character himself, long a favorite topic of meme-makers, is again showing up in plenty of memes about the virus.

In one, a nervous SpongeBob SquarePants hyperventilates underneath the caption, "Somebody said reopening the economy right now is like believing your ex changed after two months."

In another, SpongeBob appears to be getting up to leave his house, (he's actually sitting down), and the wording reads, "People with the coronavirus when they get infected and go to get other countries infected."

Cooper talked to Kenny before global protests erupted following the tragic death of George Floyd while in police custody in Minneapolis. But SpongeBob has turned up in those related memes as well, including one showing a sick SpongeBob after presumably contracting the virus at a protest, and one offering a jab at those who replaced their social media image with a black square, but did nothing else.

Kenny says he hasn't seen any of the coronavirus-specific SpongeBob memes -- and Cooper and Kenny spoke before the protest-related memes really took off -- but he understands why the character he voices has become such a universal backdrop, praising the expressiveness of the artwork and the artists' talents.

"Cartoons just translate globally to all cultures better than most pop culture," Kenny said. "I think that's why he's been so adopted by the meme culture."

The actor opened up about how she would watch her mother Darlene get discriminated against, while her father Timothy would instead be able to benefit from white privilege.

Sharing a Throwback Thursday image of herself and her twin sister Tamera posing with their mother on the red carpet, she shared several examples.

The actor wrote: "This is a photo of my beautiful mother. Growing up biracial, mom is black and dad is white, it was very clear to me seeing the privilege that my dad had as opposed to my mother."

The Nickelodeon alum continued: "Some examples, during our Sister, Sister days when traveling for work we would often fly first class.

"There were several times my mother was asked if she was in the right seat. Another incident that stood out for me was when we were buying our first home as a family."

Aakriti Sharma: Have started to reduce, reuse and recycle things

Mumbai - Child actor Aakriti Sharma says the lockdown has made her realise "how much destruction humans have caused" to the planet, adding that she has introduced a few eco-friendly changes in her life.

"We have been staying at home for so many days so that the virus does not spread more. With everybody sitting at home, everything around me is changing, even the environment. The sky is clearer and there are lesser cars on roads, thus reducing pollution," Aakriti said.

"This has helped me in understanding how much destruction humans have caused. I have even started to reduce, reuse and recycle things kept at home and ask my friends to do so. I am glad that we are looking at the positives of this lockdown," added the actor, who features in the musical drama Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala.

Fellow child actress Myra Singh Gill, who has a starring role in the show, says "as a part of the young generation, I feel it is everyone's responsibility to take care of nature".

"At present, the world is fighting a big crisis but it has also helped in healing the environment. From cleaner beaches and fresh air, I also hope that the world is able to come out soon without masks and protections and I can go to school soon and meet my friends. My mother and I have decided to plant more saplings this Environment Day," Myra added.

As part of celebrating World Environment Day, the child stars have collaborated with Nickelodeon India for the channel's #GoGreenWithNick pro-social campaign, through which they aim to educate people about the positive ways in which the lockdown has benefited the environment.

ViacomCBS Networks UK (VCN UK) has promoted Gemma Hewlett to the role of Vice President (VP) of digital channels and Anna-Belen Dunlop to Senior Director of acquisitions with immediate effect.

LR: Gemma Hewlett and Anna-Belen Dunlop

In her elevated position, Hewlett will now be responsible for leading on content strategy for ViacomCBS’s digital channel portfolio, which includes 5STAR, 5USA, 5SELECT, Paramount Network, MTV, MTV Music Pack, Comedy Central, Comedy Central Extra and BET. She will oversee all content, planning and scheduling and is tasked with optimising share of viewing across the UK portfolio.

Hewlett first joined ViacomCBS in 2009, most recently serving as director of VCN UK’s digital channels 5Star and 5Spike. Prior to this, she was channel manager for 5STAR and has also held various positions in scheduling across MTV channels.

As senior director of acquisitions, Dunlop will be tasked with leading the cross-portfolio acquisitions strategy for all ViacomCBS brands in the UK. Her expanded remit will see pay-TV channels MTV and Comedy Central added to her existing portfolio, which spans all free-to-air channels, including Channel 5.

Dunlop has been with ViacomCBS since 2015. In her previous roles as acquisitions director and acquisitions and channel manager, she was responsible for leading the Channel 5 acquisitions team, defining and shaping the acquisitions strategy. Before joining ViacomCBS, Dunlop served as acquisitions and programming manager at Channel 4 and was manager for pay-per-view (PPV) content at Sky Box Office.

Both Hewlett and Dunlop will report to Ben Frow, VCN UK’s Director of Programmes. Frow was last year promoted to oversee the operations of Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon and Paramount Network in addition to Channel 5. He commented: “Gemma and Anna-Belen are proven driving forces within our business and I’m delighted with their highly deserved promotions.

“These are two pivotal roles supporting my expanded brief across the entire UK portfolio and I look forward to working with them even more closely to shape a cohesive programme strategy for VCN UK.”

Blast Off: Young Actor Kayden Grace Swan to Launch Career on Nickelodeon's 'The Astronauts'

Kayden Grace Swan is already considered a pro in the TV and movie industry.

Moorpark resident Kayden Grace Swan, 12, recently earned a lead role on Nickelodeon’s and Imagine Kids+Family’s “The Astronauts,” a live action series premiering this fall. Credit: Kayden Grace Swan

The 12-year-old Moorpark, CA resident estimates she has auditioned for more than 500 roles and played dozens of different characters over the past three years.

“I just love to be on set,” Kayden told the Moorpark Acorn.

The thing she loves most about acting is delving into scripts and discovering what makes the characters she’s playing tick. The effort takes hard work, but for Kayden, it’s always worth it.

“I really like the process of getting into character and digging deeper into the character to find out more about them,” she said.

The sixth grader’s latest role, though, doesn’t require much research. That’s because her character on the upcoming series The Astronauts is nearly identical to her personality in real life.

“I can see who she is: She’s me,” Kayden said of her character, Doria Taylor. “She and I are so relatable. I don’t think they could have cast anyone better for the role since me and her have the same personality, the same attitude, the same ideas and mindset and the same fashion sense.”

BLAST OFF—”The Astronauts” follows five tweens as they are mistakenly launched into space after sneaking onto the Odyssey II spaceship. The group has to work together to operate the space ship and find their way back home. Credit: Nickelodeon.

The Astronauts is a live-action series slated to premiere this fall on Nickelodeon. It’s the first joint venture between the kids network and Ron Howard’s Imagine Kids+Family production company.

In the show, Kayden and her four co-stars embark on the adventure of a lifetime when they are mistakenly launched into space after sneaking aboard a spaceship. Without any proper training, the kids have to work together to operate the craft and find a way back to Earth.

“It’s like The Goonies in space,” Kayden said.

For Kayden, the opportunity to play a central character on a high-profile show is a dream come true. It’s a goal she’s been working toward since she was a student at Walnut Canyon, an arts and technology magnet elementary school.

“When I did a one-woman show at my performing arts school, my mom knew that I could really act,” Kayden said. “Right after that I got my agent and started going out for a lot of auditions.”

Kayden’s been so busy that she had to leave Walnut Canyon and begin taking classes online and on the set.

She’s done guest spots on the HBO series A Black Lady Sketch Show and the Oprah Winfrey-produced family drama Queen Sugar. She played a young Nicki Minaj in the music video for “Bigger Than You” featuring 2 Chainz and Degrassi alum Drake.

Trying out for the role of Doria on The Astronauts, though, was her most nerve-wracking experience yet. She went through 10 rounds of auditions to get the part, according to her mom, Kelly Charity.

“After she found out she booked it, they told us they did a nationwide and (international) search for this role and had auditioned over 30,000 girls,” Charity said.

The casting director said Kayden was a perfect fit for the show and that the writers began adapting her character to be more like the 12-year-old.

“There were things that Kayden was bringing to the audition that they loved so much that they ended up rewriting who her character was,” Charity said. “They started to write the character really based on a lot of Kayden’s characteristics.”

The Astronauts began filming in February in Vancouver, Canada. Four episodes were shot before production was shut down in March due to COVID-19 (coronavirus). The cast and crew hope to be back on set in July.

In The Astronauts, the group traveling together through space are: Samantha “Samy” Sawyer-Wei, played by Miya Cech (Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Always Be My Maybe); Elliott Combs, played by Bryce Gheisar (Wonder, A Dog’s Purpose); Martin Taylor, played by Keith L. Williams (Good Boys, The Last Man on Earth); Doria Taylor, played by Kayden Grace Swan (A Black Lady Sketch Show); and Will Rivers, played by Ben Daon (Child’s Play). Matilda, the ship’s onboard AI system is voiced by Paige Howard (The Employer, Adventureland).

ViacomCBS Commits $5 Million To Social Justice Groups, Sets Virtual Community Day for June 18

ViacomCBS has committed $5 million to social justice causes, set a virtual community day for Thursday, June 18 and is preparing to announce new members of its combined global inclusion advisory committee, said CEO Bob Bakish in a memo to employees Friday, June 5.

Media and entertainment companies have contributed money and also taken a series of measures over the past ten days to honor George Floyd, who was tragically killed by police in Minneapolis last week, sparking of a wave of national outrage and protests. Nickelodeon and other ViacomCBS cable channels went dark for a period earlier this week, with ViacomCBS' social media channels and website following suit, along with much of the industry on Black Tuesday, to honor Floyd. That day, ViacomCBS offered online counseling sessions for staffers. Bakish said in today’s memo that the company had donated $12 million over the past two years to organizations promoting racial equality as part of an effort to create “a more equitable company, communities and countries. But we must do more and do better.”

In coming weeks, he said, ViacomCBS will be announcing new appointees to the Global Inclusion Advisory Committee that guides and oversee companywide diveristy and inclusion initiatives. It is developing dashboards to provide an overview of new hires, promotions and terminations through the lens of gender and ethnicity, which will be reviewed every quarter. It will share diversity and inclusion metrics publicly.

The $5 million will go to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Equal Justice Initiative, Amnesty International, National Bail Out, The Bail ProjectT, Community Coalition.

Bob Bakish memo:

Team,

The past few weeks have raised to the surface the longstanding pain of racism and inequality that so many people in our communities endure each day. The fact is the world has missed the mark on fighting for social justice and equality and we need to do more, now.

Our efforts to amplify the voices of Black communities, condemn systemic racism, and honor George Floyd and other victims of racial injustice are only a handful of the actions we’re taking to stand up for what’s right – and it’s so important our company has responded and rallied over the past two weeks.

And this work didn’t start last week. It builds on a legacy of working to ensure we create a more equitable company, communities and countries. But we must do more and do better. I truly believe that action is more important than ever, and I want to make sure you know some of the many initiatives already underway across the company, many of which will be accelerated and expanded.

Since the merger a few months ago, Marva Smalls and the Office of Global Inclusion have been hard at work integrating our Diversity & Inclusion teams, setting the shared inclusion agenda for the company, and launching new and scaling existing initiatives, with collaboration across the company. These efforts include:

  • Global Inclusion Advisory Committee (GIAC) – Comprised of leaders from across the company, GIAC helps to guide and oversee our companywide D&I initiatives in partnership with the Global Inclusion team. We will be announcing the new appointees from our combined companies in the coming weeks. Thanks again to the senior leaders who have agreed to serve.
  • Employee Resource Groups (ERGs)– Our ERGs embody the spirit of diversity and inclusion by providing a forum for employees to flourish personally and professionally while offering direct business support to all our brands. Our ERGs hold over 200 events globally every year, and more than 50% of our workforce are members of these employee-led groups, including AMP (Asian American Media Professionals); CBS RAD (Respect, Appreciation and Development); The BEAT (Black Employee Resource Team); SOMOS, which centers on the LatinX/Hispanic experience; Fusion, celebrating cultural diversity across our international offices; Emerge & CBS Pride, which focus on the LGBTQ+ community; CBS’ Veterans group; as well as HERE and the Women’s Networking Group.
  • Trainings – Unconscious bias and inclusive leadership training programs will continue across the company, along with other next practice initiatives.
  • Data + Metrics – Building on work done at legacy Viacom, we are in the process of developing dashboards to provide an overview of new hires, promotions and terminations through the lens of gender and ethnicity, which will be reviewed every quarter; in addition, we will be sharing our diversity and inclusion metrics publicly in the coming months.
  • Global Inclusion Week – Launched last year, the week of interactive, immersive and informative sessions will return in September to advance important discussions on bias and actions we can all take.

We also have a variety of programs to help ensure representation in front of and behind the camera, as well as through our partnerships and supply chain. This includes our ViewFinder Emerging Directors Program, Nickelodeon Writing and Artist Programs, CBS Showcase, CBS ON TOUR, CBS Writers Mentoring Program & Directing Initiative and the ViacomCBS Supplier Diversity Program, among others.

In addition, over the past two years, we have given over $12 million to organizations that support and impact communities of color, and we are committing an additional $5 million today to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Equal Justice Initiative, Amnesty International, National Bail Out, The Bail Project, Community Coalition and others in support of their tireless work to ensure equality and justice. I’d also remind you of our employee donation matching program – which has seen record levels of engagement over the past two weeks – as an important outlet for contributing to these efforts. And our brands will continue to dedicate and donate a significant amount of air time to these very important causes, as they’ve done so powerfully over the past week.

Our annual day of service will be another important outlet for action. On Thursday, June 18th, Virtual Community Day will allow us to come together across ViacomCBS to make an impact in this time of need. To express. To act. To do some good. Even while we’re at home.

Early next week, our Corporate Social Responsibility team will share more information about the virtual volunteer opportunities they’re curating – including opportunities to connect and engage around social justice and other ongoing community needs. We also strongly encourage you to personalize the day and will provide resources to inspire you to create your own experiences and actions. I urge all of you to take as much time as you’re able and participate in any way you choose.

Most importantly, I want all of you to understand this is a sustained, ongoing commitment from our company that won’t end when the current outrage and news cycle inevitably does. We fundamentally believe that a more diverse and inclusive company – that does business with equally diverse and inclusive partners and talent – is good for business, and our communities.

To that end, we will be circling back with additional commitments the company is making in the coming days and months, including specific goals on how we will quantify and hold ourselves accountable for progress.

Best,
Bob

ViacomCBS Donating $5 Million to Social Justice Organizations

Organizations including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Equal Justice Initiative, Amnesty International, National Bail Out, The Bail Project, Community Coalition and others will receive funding from the conglomerate.
ViacomCBS has joined the ranks of industry companies opening their pocketbooks in the midst of nationwide protests over racial inequality in America.

CEO Bob Bakish announced that the company would be donating $5 million to organizations including the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Equal Justice Initiative, Amnesty International, National Bail Out, The Bail Project, Community Coalition and others in a company-wide email about recent events on Friday.

Bakish also reminded employees of ViacomCBS' employee donation matching program, which he said "has seen record levels of engagement over the past two weeks."

With the gesture, ViacomCBS joins the ranks of Disney and Bad Robot in making donations to social justice causes over the past week, which has seen protests spring up nationwide in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd as a police officer kneeled on his neck. That officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with second-degree murder, while three others officers at the scene have been charged with aiding and abetting second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. All four officers were fired from the Minneapolis Police Department.

The email also updated employees on the company's recent efforts at combining diversity and inclusion teams since the Viacom and CBS merger and donating $12 million in the last two years to organizations working on behalf of communities of color. Still: "The fact is the world has missed the mark on fighting for social justice and equality and we need to do more, now," Bakish writes.
