Nickelodeon USA Sees Ratings Uptick During Coronavirus Outbreak

Nickelodeon has seen a ratings uptick during the coronavirus outbreak with more people hunkering down at home. Since this past Friday (March 13), Nickelodeon’s portfolio of linear networks have been up 16% with Kids 2-11 compared to the prior four weeks. On Monday, ratings surged 36% over the last four weeks’ average, and were up 15% compared to the same time period last year. Nickelodeon itself has been up 18% compared to the last four weeks, also driven by Monday’s strong rise. Ratings for that day were up 27% over the recent average, and +11% compared to last year.

Oddly, children's channels in Poland, including Nickelodeon, have not yet seen a ratings increase, even though schools in the country have been closed due to the viral outbreak.

From Deadline:

TV Ratings Climb As People Rediscover Live Linear Viewing Amid Coronavirus-Imposed Stay At Home

March 8 marked the start of Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. Normally, the switch is associated with a Live+Same Day ratings slump for the broadcast networks, especially in the 8 PM hour, as people stay outside longer.

But this year, the week of March 8 marked the turning point in the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., when the threat became real as new cases in the country started skyrocketing and the World Health Organization declaring it a global pandemic. By the end of last week, most companies had instituted work-from-home guidelines, many schools were closed, and restaurants, movie theaters and gyms started to shut down.

As a result of people following the new “social distancing” guidelines and spending more time at home, the typical Daylight Saving Time slump was nonexistent this year. What’s more, broadcast networks have been posting across-the-board, week-to-week, Live+SD ratings increases the likes of which we had not seen in ages, and which had been considered a thing of the past amid the proliferation of streaming.

This past Monday, NBC’s The Voice, an 8 PM show, leaped a whopping 38% (five tenths of a rating point) week-to-week among adults 18-49 (1.8 vs. 1.3) and 1.1 million total viewers (9.67 million vs. 8.73 million) to deliver the highest-rated and most watched Monday or Tuesday edition of the singing competition in a year.

Last night, NBC’s Ellen’s Game of Games, also a 8 PM program, climbed 44% (four tenths) in the demo and added 1.6 million viewers for its best L+SD marks in more than a year. The network’s This Is Us rose three tenths in the demo on Tuesday, while CBS’ Bull and Bob Hearts Abishola posted season highs Monday.

Streaming had been tipped as a major beneficiary of the current mandate for staying home, but viewers — and many of them younger — are also checking out traditional TV.

Primetime PUT (People Using Television) levels among total viewers were up every day last week, with strong week-to-week gains on both Saturday and Sunday night. Monday’s HUTs (Households Using Television) levels were the highest for a Monday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 13).

Daytime and late-night usage levels were also have been up. For instance, since last Friday, Nickelodeon’s portfolio of linear networks have been up 16% with kids 2-11 compared with the prior four weeks.

Ratings experts expect viewing levels’ growth to continue as more people stay home amid expanding restrictions, including quarantines, around the country.

As for any long-term effect, it is too early to say whether younger viewers who discovered appointment viewing on broadcast TV will come back when the outbreak is over. But for the time being the ratings uptick may be the only good news for the networks, which are facing losses from the suspension of most major sports, unfinished seasons as many series shut down over COVID-19 fears before wrapping production, and a pilot-season washout.

Kids' Viewing On The Rise In The Time Of COVID-19

Reversing some systemic ratings declines, national TV kids' networks have seen gains over the last week, as more children are now home from school due to COVID-19 concerns, according to two different TV research companies.

Nickelodeon is up 7% to 560,000 total day Nielsen-measured viewers for the week ending March 15, while NickToons is up 16% to 110,000 viewers, Boomerang is 5% higher to 89,000 and TeenNick is up 22% to 77,000.

WarnerMedia’s The Cartoon Network -- the second-biggest kids' network -- is down slightly by 2% to 291,000, while Nick Jr. is down 2.4% to 240,000. Disney XD is flat at 69,000, while Universal Kids is up 17% to 34,000 and BabyKids is up 6% to 33,000.

Traditional linear TV networks have seen declines in viewing for years due to growing digital platforms, including YouTube.
Samba TV -- which culls viewing data from smart TV automated content recognition technology -- says that over the same two-week period, TeenNick has seen total time spent on its network by 171%, while DisneyXD is 68% higher, Nicktoons is 66% higher, Nick Jr. has added 32%, and Disney Channel has grown 27%.

Samba TV has a measurement panel of millions of U.S. homes and measures the time spent watching TV across more than 190 networks from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm local time.

From CBR.com:

Coronavirus Quarantine Causes Spike in Live TV Ratings

With more people staying at home due to coronavirus, television viewership is reaching massive highs across the country.

The quarantine issued in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has led to a sizeable increase in live TV ratings.

According to Deadline, television networks have seen a massive spike in ratings since last week, when the spread of the disease led to a massive response from government bodies. Schools, places of business and other workspaces began shutting down in order to help curb the spread of the disease and people in general began practicing "social distancing" in order to avoid further infection.

There is a clear correlation between the rise in ratings and the fact that the general populace has been spending more time indoors. NBC's The Voice saw a massive 38% jump among viewers in the 18-49 age demographic on Monday night, while another NBC competition show Ellen's Game of Games jumped 44% on Tuesday night. The CBS sitcom Bob Hearts Abishola and legal drama Bull also posted season highs for both shows on Monday. The children's channel Nickelodeon has seen a 16% rise among the 2-11 age demographic since last Friday.

Broadcast networks are in serious need of the high ratings. With multiple sports leagues cancelling their seasons and with production being shut down on shows across the country, television networks are facing serious loses in the face of the pandemic. Current competition continues to be streaming services, which have also seen a rise in viewings.

Ratings experts speculate that the increase will continue to grow as long as the quarantine and restrictions over the disease remain active.

From Kidscreen:

What are kids watching on lockdown?

PAW Patrol and Star Wars: The Clone Wars are among the most in-demand shows for the past two weeks across Europe and North America.

The past two weeks has seen a massive push towards physicial isolation across Europe and North America, forcing billions of kids to be kept home from school. And while schooling continues for many, there’s also been a spike in home viewership. What’s topping kids’ viewing lists? LA-based Parrot Analytics has found that PAW Patrol is dominating screens in Europe, while SpongeBob SquarePants is most popular across North America.

According to UNESCO, 87% of the world’s children are out of school right now with nationwide closures in more than 160 countries. And kids TV channels are seeing a spike in viewing according to Nielsen—some as high as 58% in the US.

How does that translate to online? Parrot Analytics measured social media interactions, social video views, online research and piracy numbers using a weighted algorithm, to determine demand for the average show (demand being how frequently it’s talked about online or pirated.)

Between March 11 and 23 in Europe, the number one most in-demand show was PAW Patrol (22.35 time more demand than the average show), followed by Peppa Pig (21.27 times), SpongeBob SquarePants (15.15 times), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (pictured, 14.57 times), Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (13.98 times), Masha and the Bear (12.53 times), Gravity Falls (10.32 times), Steven Universe (10.11 times), My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (9.67 times) and PJ Masks (6.59 times).

Meanwhile, in North America, SpongeBob SquarePants still reigns supreme, like it did for the first three months of the year, at 88.43 times greater demand than the average show. While the top-10 shared some similarities with Europe, such as Steven Universe (60.68 times) and Star Wars: The Clone Wars (54.09 time), it also featured a lot of anime, including Dragon Ball Z at number four (40.97 times), while Europe had no shows featuring the Japanese art-style in its top-10 list. Other anime titles on the list included Pokémon (35.46 times) at number six, Avatar: The Last Airbender (30.78 times) at number nine and Naruto: Shippuden (29.71x) at ten.

The rest of the North American top-10 was rounded out by PAW Patrol (35.5 times), Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir (33.52 times), Sesame Street (31.87 times).

There's Still Opportunity In Media Landscape

I’m sure you have seen your own media usage change over the last week or two, now that you’re holed up at home. You’re watching, reading, browsing more.

Traditional TV and cable TV are reaping the benefits of a captive audience consisting of homebound young adults, frazzled parents and bored kids.

Reports Deadline: “Primetime PUT (People Using Television) levels among total viewers were up every day last week, with strong week-to-week gains on both Saturday and Sunday night. Monday’s HUTs (Households Using Television) levels were the highest for a Monday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day (January 13). Daytime and late-night usage levels were also have been up. For instance, since last Friday, Nickelodeon’s portfolio of linear networks has been up 16% with kids 2-11 compared with the prior four weeks.”

Video platforms have also seen significant audience upticks. Per Cheddar: “Americans streamed 85% more minutes of video in March 2020 than in March 2019, according to new Nielsen data.

- The average person has spent 36% more minutes streaming TV and movies in the last four weeks.

- Binge watching (or watching 3+ episodes in one sitting, per the Hulu English Dictionary) has climbed more than 25% over the last two weeks."

Awesome: More eyeballs, so more opportunity to advertise, right? Nope. The Meyers Report writes: “While 89 percent of advertisers have been disrupted by COVID-19, only a third have canceled a campaign outright. The rest are changing their media mix and/or looking to shift their spending into the second half of the year. Despite the shifting of current media dollars, fully 81 percent of advertisers expect to cut ad budgets significantly this year, and 68 percent expect to spend less next year because of the pandemic.”

Some of that makes perfect sense. It’s hard to advertise for products or services that have been impacted by the pandemic, or to audiences that have more pressing matters than thinking about buying a new car or electric toothbrush.

But it’s worth remembering a few important lessons from past economic downturns. Here is a blast from the past, as reported in 2009: “Companies whose ad spending didn't vary according to economic cycles -- based on an analysis of Ad Age data on global ad spending -- also tended to increase their stock prices an average of 1.3 percentage points annually ahead of others from 1986 to 2006.”

So what does all this copy/pasting I just did tell us? First of all, budget cuts and shifts are understandable, especially if you are not able to serve (the majority of) your customers as you used to prior to the shutdown. But at the same time, a hard “cut and run” may not be in your best interest, if you think your business will still be standing when the economy re-emerges at the other end of the tunnel. If you can’t sell a product or service right now, it’s perhaps the time to reinforce your brand values and consumer appreciation.

And if you are still selling or servicing, for you, too, this is the time to benefit from high supply and lowered demand in the media market. There might be real opportunities for advertisers looking for some presence.

From Variety:

More Screen Time During Lockdown? Not for These Kids Cable Channels

Even if parents are going batty trying to keep their little ones entertained while cooped up at home during this pandemic, they’re not necessarily plunking the kids in front of the TV — not linear TV at least. Meanwhile, certain streaming services are seeing a lift in interest, underscoring the next generation’s shift in television viewing habits.

For the week of March 23-29, viewership of ad-supported kids’ linear cable networks — a group that includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney XD and others — slid 3% from the comparable week in March 2019, according to Bernstein research analysts, citing Nielsen figures. And that year-over-year decline actually marks a major improvement: prior to shelter-in-place measures being implemented, weekly viewership of those channels among 2- to 11-year-olds had been plummeting an average of 25% since the start of 2020.

“Even though the rate of decline significantly decelerated, it’s still in negative territory even though time available in front of TV is arguably as large as it can be,” wrote Bernstein analyst Todd Juenger on Monday. “It’s very likely that kids’ linear TV continues to lose significant share vs. other forms of entertainment, namely [subscription video on demand] services and video games.”

For comparison, looking at viewership metrics that span the entire day (which is how kids cable network viewing is tracked), broadcast network viewership rose 9% and cable tune-in increased 2%, said the firm. (By their usual primetime-only measurements, broadcast was flat vs. last year, while cable slid 10%, with ESPN in particular taking a massive knock from the lack of live sports on TV.)

By Juenger’s count, the week of March 23 was the second week that major U.S. metropolitan areas felt the impact of stay-at-home coronavirus guidance, though most states didn’t issue official advisories until at least mid- to late March — California ordered residents to shelter in place beginning March 19, Illinois on March 21, New York on March 22, Washington state on March 23, Virginia on March 25, and Texas on April 2, for instance. Nielsen data from the first week of April should show an even fuller picture of how much linear TV people are watching while in lockdown mode.

Attempts at homeschooling aside, parents have options for keeping preschoolers and grade schoolers from bouncing off the walls. The last few weeks have seen museums, zoos, educational organizations and entertainment outlets alike offer up a bevy of distance-learning resources to keep kids preoccupied while in the house. National Geographic, for one, launched NatGeo@Home, while PBS Kids created a weekday newsletter filled with suggested activities. Nickelodeon rolled out a multiplatform initiative, #KidsTogether, that includes short-form videos of, say, SpongeBob practicing social distancing.

Last week’s viewership stats mean that even with the nation’s children home from school for the time being and the New York Times allowing that parents can “Just Give Them the Screens (for Now),” linear cable is in a challenged spot.

Cartoon Network viewing fell 6.2% from the prior-year for the week of March 23. ViacomCBS-owned Nickelodeon saw a 15% year-over-year drop in viewership and Nicktoons slid around 12-13%, while Nick Jr. popped nearly 25%.

The dip in the former two Nick channels can arguably be chalked up to the platform and not the content: In March, Nickelodeon’s “The Legend of Korra” and “Danny Phantom” were among the children’s series with the highest volume of streams and time spent on subscription streaming service CBS All Access, alongside “Bob the Builder.” And Nickelodeon’s Noggin app saw 11% month-over-month growth in paid subscribers in March and a 40% jump in free trial sign-ups.

CBS All Access, which just a few months ago ventured into the kid programming space (including originals), tells Variety it has seen a more than 30% month-over-month increase in both daily average streams and time spent watching children’s programming in March. “Polly Pocket,” “Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventure” and “Where on Earth is Carmen Sandiego?” are seeing their “largest percentage growth to date,” per a spokesperson for the service. (Overall, All Access says March was its most-streamed month in existence.)

Meanwhile, Disney Plus is seeing a bump in interest as well. While the five-month-old streamer has not released viewership data, Google Trends shows a spike in searches for the service on March 13 — the day that the Walt Disney Co. announced that it would release the movie “Frozen 2” to the streaming service three months earlier than planned, in order to offer “some fun and joy during this challenging period.” (Netflix declined to comment on its viewership trends over the past month.)

But it’s not all bad news for traditional cablers. At least for Disney, a focus on its new streamer doesn’t seem to be detracting from its linear cable presence; Disney XD viewership notched up over 5% the week of March 23 — a reversal in trend from the weeks leading up to that.

From Forbes:

ViacomCBS’ Downward Spiral Is Accelerating As Talk Of Unraveling Grows

Just a few months ago, Shari Redstone was basking in the triumph of a lifetime. After decades of lawsuits, bitter sniping, cruel insults and brutal boardroom warfare, the 65-year-old billionaire’s daughter had wrested control of her father’s media empire from a coterie of powerful enemies, putting a newly merged ViacomCBS under her control.

Newly ensconced in her father’s old office, 52 stories above New York’s Times Square, Redstone—once belittled as a “daddy’s girl”—had battled her way to a legitimate claim of being the media industry’s most powerful woman. Six months later, that victory lap has turned into a strenuous uphill climb. And the coronavirus pandemic has just handed her a large bag of rocks.

“The merger was a huge mistake,” says Craig Huber, of Huber Research Partners. “They should have sold Viacom many years ago, rather than saddle CBS with it.”

The combined businesses issued their first report card in February, delivering a loss from continued operations of $273 million on revenue of $6.9 billion, a 3% drop over the prior year. They’ve also lagged behind their peers in launching a subscription streaming service that could compete with Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, NBCUniversal’s Peacock and Warner Media’s HBO Max.

Future reports were not expected to be much better even before coronavirus lockdowns put a freeze on entertainment and sports businesses. Then came the cancellation of the NCAA’s March Madness basketball tournament and with it ad revenue of more than $1 billion, which would have been divided between the two rights holders, CBS and Turner.

“The underlying problem here is that, despite $28 billion in revenues, the company generates a paltry amount of free cash flow,” the research firm MoffettNathanson wrote in a report published March 27. “It is mind-boggling to figure out where the cash flow is actually.”

It’s not likely to be found soon. The Paramount film studio can’t make movies right now, nor can it collect revenue from showing those that it has produced since theaters are largely closed. Furthermore, veteran media analyst Harold Vogel wrote last week that the company’s $18.7 billion of debt at year-end was “too high for comfort,” with $800 million of it coming due in the next year. “Cash flow in support of this debt is a relative trickle of what it ought to be at this stage,” he wrote.

Pressure is mounting for management to act. The problem is there are few good options.

ViacomCBS shares plummeted 18% the day after the February earnings report came out and have fallen another 48% since. Valued at about $25 billion after the merger, the combined businesses are now trading at a market capitalization of less than $10 billion. There are plans underway to sell off its book publishing arm, Simon & Schuster, but many are advocating the sale of far larger assets, like Showtime Networks or Paramount (whose titles include Top Gun, Mission Impossible and Star Trek), to shore up its balance sheet.

Neither is likely without a struggle, considering how former CEO Philippe Dauman fell out of favor with Sumner Redstone when he suggested in 2016 that Sumner sell a piece of Paramount, reportedly at a valuation as high as $5.5 billion. Any major transaction would also require signoff from Shari Redstone, who spent years fighting to combine and ultimately control the businesses.

“That was always Sumner’s issue, is that he fought so hard to put everything together that he never wanted to take it apart,” says another former Viacom executive, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “I think that Shari probably feels the same way.”

In addition to the woes at Paramount, cable networks Nickelodeon and MTV, once at the pinnacle of cultural relevance, are bleeding viewers. As of February, Nickelodeon had lost 44% of its audience in the past five years; MTV has also hemorrhaged viewers and revenue and is working to rebuild. The profitability of CBS’ legacy networks (almost entirely Showtime) dropped 8% in 2018 and 22% in the first nine months of 2019, according to MoffettNathanson, while last year it increased production volume by 30%, a move the research firm called “largely ill advised.”

On ViacomCBS’ February earnings call, CEO Bob Bakish admitted that Showtime was a “working capital headwind for the company” in 2019, but emphasized that he planned to improve cost efficiency across the business.

ViacomCBS declined to comment for this story.

Adding to cost pressures are the upcoming negotiations for the rights to air NFL football on CBS and a network carriage deal with Dish, the U.S. satellite network, both critical gets. CBS has a 10-year NFL agreement that expires in 2023 and may need to be renegotiated sooner, a scenario with “no good outcome,” according to Huber. Either it will lose out on the right to air games—a disaster—or it will pay huge fees, which will further eat into margins.

Meanwhile, past deals by CBS to provide some of its premium content to Netflix, including NCIS and Criminal Minds, “likely played a role in their own demise,” according to MoffettNathanson, by limiting the appeal of CBS All Access, the company’s flagship streaming service, which has 16 million paying subscribers.

The bright spots are few. Management shake-ups have slowed and Redstone has a seemingly solid partnership with Bob Bakish, a Viacom veteran who took over as CEO in 2016. Pluto TV, the ad-supported streaming service Viacom bought last year for $340 million expects to end 2020 with 30 million (unpaid) monthly active users, compared to at least 28 million current subscribers at Disney+ and over 167 million at Netflix, which are collecting monthly fees from all of them. Hulu, also controlled by Disney, has more than 30 million paying subscribers. Still, ViacomCBS enjoys sustained cultural relevance overseas with the likes of Nickelodeon and MTV, including in Europe and South America.

Help could come from a viable new film franchise that could challenge Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars franchises, or the DC Comics superhero films from Warner Bros., for instance. Or one of the networks could find a breakthrough television show. But ViacomCBS is already spending $13 billion on new programming, roughly the same spend as Netflix, which is now calling the shots in Hollywood. In recent years Netflix has put out groundbreaking content like Stranger Things, Marriage Story, Tiger King and Narcos.

The company could also stem some of the bleeding by merging CBS All Access with a competitor like NBCUniversal’s Peacock or Hulu. The conglomerate has a more existential problem, though, being a “pigmy among giants,” according to Vogel, which has left it looking like a sitting duck for a well-funded buyer like Amazon, Apple or Netflix, or even a hedge fund that may see value in buying the whole thing and chopping it up for parts.

Said one large ViacomCBS shareholder in a February email to Forbes: “Almost certainly the sum of the parts valuation here is well in excess [of] like double the public market value of the stock.”

“The realization of Shari’s quest to merge Viacom and CBS is now completely irrelevant,” adds a former board member, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “What the company needs to do urgently is to shore up its weak financial position by eliminating its dividend, following Disney’s lead in cutting executive compensation, and selling assets. The survival of ViacomCBS as a viable media player, or even as a viable company, is at stake.”

The largest recipient of those dividend payments is National Amusements, which is already facing liquidity pressure. Primarily in the movie theater business, it has been largely shut down to avoid the spread of coronavirus. According to S&P Global Ratings, which downgraded the firm’s credit rating earlier this month, National Amusements is “dependent on its dividend income to service its debt.” S&P adds that the company “could face a potential liquidity crisis if theaters remain closed beyond August.”

The fate of National Amusements is critical. It holds a 79% voting stake in ViacomCBS. Sumner—96 and ailing—has an 80% stake in National Amusements, which will be divided in two on his passing. Half will go to half for the benefit of his descendants, whose trustees will include Shari and her son as well as others with long ties to members of the family, including divorce lawyers for Sumner and his former wife, Phyllis, and a National Amusements executive. The other trust will be for the benefit of Phyllis.

Shari Redstone is showing no signs of backing down. She purchased $2 million worth of ViacomCBS shares in the last two months and, as she told us in September when discussing her battle for the family business, not one who worries much about outside opinions: “No matter how hard or challenging it got, I tried to keep my head down, fight for what was right and not read the press.”

NEW YORK--Beloved puppy Blue will skidoo into season two as Nickelodeon greenlights an additional 20 episodes of its newest series Blue’s Clues & You!, which took the top spot as the number-one preschool show in its first week on air (11/11/19-11/17/19). The curriculum-driven interactive series Blue’s Clues & You! posted strong gains during its premiere week, up +38% with K2-5 (2.9/257,000) over prior four weeks and +34% among total viewers (674,000). New episodes of Blue’s Clues & You! will continue to air weekdays at 11 a.m. ET/PT on Nickelodeon.

The second season of Blue’s Clues & You! will follow Josh (Josh Dela Cruz) and puppy Blue on brand-new adventures with friends old and new. The new season will also feature special appearances by Steve (Steve Burns), Joe (Donovan Patton), and Josh’s Lola (Carolyn Fe)--his grandmother--along with even more singing and dancing, exploration, celebration, and of course clues that empower preschoolers to help their friends.

Later this month, Nickelodeon will debut a brand-new float inspired by Blue’s Clues & You! in the 93rd Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade®. Host Josh Dela Cruz will perform on the float alongside a 22-foot tall Blue covered in 13 pounds of glitter.

Alongside the linear episodes, brand-new Blue’s Clues & You! play-along videos are currently available in Noggin, Nick’s top-ranked interactive learning subscription for preschoolers. The play-along videos allow users to explore the stories in an immersive way, and engage with live-action host Josh and the animated characters, by tapping, touching or swiping to navigate through enhanced learning experiences. Preschoolers have the ability to customize elements, like the color of the clues or the creation of birthday cards for Blue, and then see their designs appear throughout the video. The classic Blue’s Clues library is also available on Noggin and additional Blue’s Clues & You! play-along videos will continue to roll out into next year.

Original short-form content and full-length episodes of Blue’s Clues & You! are available now on NickJr.com and the Nick Jr. App. Episodes are also available on Nick Jr. On Demand and Download-To-Own services.

Blue’s Clues & You! follows Blue as she invites viewers to join her and Josh on a clue-led adventure and solve a puzzle in each episode. With each signature paw print, Blue identifies clues in her animated world that propel the story and inspire the audience to interact with the characters.

The original Blue’s Clues series launched in September 1996 to critical praise from educators, parents, and preschoolers and ran for six groundbreaking seasons. Created by Traci Paige Johnson, Todd Kessler, and Angela C. Santomero, Blue’s Clues drew acclaim and high ratings for its unique interactivity that helped change the way kids watch television and has remained one of the most popular preschool shows of all time. The landmark series also raised the bar in preschool television by exploring advanced subject matter such as sign language, geography, physics, emotions, and anatomy.

Nickelodeon, now in its 40th year, is the number-one entertainment brand for kids. It has built a diverse, global business by putting kids first in everything it does. The brand includes television programming and production in the United States and around the world, plus consumer products, digital, location based experiences, publishing and feature films. From Showbiz Cheat Sheet:

'Blue's Clues & You' Host Joshua Dela Cruz Breaks Barriers as Asian-American Children's Television Show Host

Actor Joshua Dela Cruz is bringing a fresh, new perspective to television as the first Asian-American host of Blue’s Clues & You.

Dela Cruz became the host of the groundbreaking, updated Nickelodeon series, Blue’s Clues & You in 2019. Launched in 1996, Blue’s Clues is an exploratory series that allows the host to examine life through the lens of his dog Blue. The series weaves live action with interactive cartoons as worlds collide during the host’s busy day. The mailbox sings, salt and pepper shakers dance and a “handy dandy notebook” helps the Blue and the host uncover the “clues” during the day.

The series has featured two other hosts. Steve Burns was the original host. Then, actor Donovan Patton took on the role of Joe. The show wrapped in 2007 but is now being rebooted with Dela Cruz as the show’s lead. Burns and Patton will also return. But Cruz shared that the show will be updated to reflect the current cultural vibe.

Why did it take so long to see an Asian-American as a children’s show host?
Children’s programming dawned with shows like Howdy Doody, followed by series like Romper Room, Bozo the Clown and a slew of animated shows. Nearly every series lacked diversity until Sesame Street arrived in 1969. The cast featured puppets who interacted with the children and adults on the show, which also included several people of color.

But diversity wasn’t as widespread in children’s programming until recently. Dela Cruz says he isn’t sure why it took until 2019 to feature an Asian-American as the host. But he’s thrilled to be paving the way for others. “You know, everything comes at its own time,” he told Showbiz Cheat Sheet. “It’s very funny watching old movies and TV shows and then realizing how it wasn’t diverse at all, outside of even bit parts.”

“It’s very surprising, even today, whenever movies come out and it’s usually just white men,” he continues. “And it’s a little like, you scratch your head and are like, ‘Oh, we’re still doing this.’ But I think a lot has to do with the creative team.”

Creative teams are becoming more diverse
Dela Cruz points out that as creative teams become more diverse, the roles they write are for a wider demographic. He credits creators Angela Santomero and Traci Paige Johnson for their ability to bring more diversity to children’s programming. “Because they’re the ones bringing in the diversity,” he says. “And there are so many diverse actors out there like they don’t even get the opportunity to be looked at.”

“But I think the diversity that’s in the creative team really helps move us forward and move us along,” he continues. “And what more, there’s a lack of good material for people to use. If there’s good material out there, people will stop seeing a Filipino guy or a black woman. And just start seeing an actor. A good actor.”

Dela Cruz is optimistic that programming is trending toward diversity. “Thankfully it is getting better and it is progressing,” he says. “But even before diversity was really a hit, Nickelodeon was really the most diverse channel I had ever seen. As far as cartoons like, Hey, Arnold! was a much closer depiction of what New York City looked like. If you even compare that with a popular television show like Friends, a children’s cartoon show was more diverse than that, which was really important for me growing up to see that. And so I’m just so excited and I’m so honored that I get to be in this role.”

He adds that viewers are going to be treated to some of his culture, which includes introducing a new character. “I get a grandmother,” he shares. “This is very exciting to me because, in the Philippines, they call the grandmother, Lola! So I get a Lola and I get to be able to share a piece of my culture with everyone watching.”

Josh Dela Cruz Talks Blue’s Clues & You – Exclusive Interview

Talking to Josh Dela Cruz about Blue’s Clues & You is something that is very special to our family as Blue’s Clues was one of those shows that my son loved. We were happy to find out that Blue’s Clues & You would be entertaining and teaching another generation of children with Josh Dela Cruz as the host. Given the opportunity to ask Josh some questions about his career as well as both of the shows with Blue was something we have been looking forward to for a while.

Having premiered in the winter of 2019 and already being picked up for a second season, one of Nickelodeon’s most iconic children’s series to date “Blue’s Clues & You” is back and better than ever with new host Josh Dela Cruz. Rebooted from the original 1996 series “Blue’s Clues,” the all-new 2019 series invites its viewers to join in on collaborative, clue-led adventures to solve puzzles that mixes live-action and digital animation.

Let’s talk some Blue’s Clues & You with Josh Dela Cruz!

BSCKids: We have a huge attachment to Blue’s Clues and my middle son carried around a plush puppy Blue with him for years. Do you find that people tell you stories like that a lot and do you have a favorite?

Josh Dela Cruz: I heard one of my favorite stories about the show while I was in the middle of auditioning. I was going over lines backstage at Aladdin on Broadway when a fellow cast member overheard that I was auditioning for the remake of BLUES CLUES and YOU. We immediately started to reminisce about watching the show as kids and as our conversation grew, the cast started singing the “Mail Song” at the top of their lungs. That’s when I realized just how special this show really is. Up until that point, my memories of the show were only shared between my sister and I. We played along finding clues, laughed, and sang every song. I look back now and realize we were sharing those moments with kids all over the world. Decades later as adults we’ve discussed how our connection through kindness, silliness and empathy were, in large part, lessons we learned on Blue’s Clues.

We grew up right around the corner from Paper Mill Playhouse and loved seeing shows there, tell us about your experiences there.

Every year, Paper Mill Playhouse hosts The Rising Star Awards to celebrate the students and Musicals they perform in High School. Essentially, the New Jersey high school Tony Awards. My school was nominated twice. Once for best musical and once for best actor in a musical. As a nominee, you get to perform in front of the largest audience any of us had ever seen. I remember the nervous anticipation as we waited backstage and then to have it all melt away when we stepped under the lights. This is such a happy memory for me.

How familiar with the original show were you? What would you say your favorite original episode was?

Some of my fondest memories come from watching Blue’s Clues with my youngest sister. I remember Steve drawing a cup in his handy dandy notebook so vividly—the circle, two lines and a line on the bottom. Fast forward to my first clue drawing on set and it’s a cup! “A circle, two lines and a line on the bottom.” All of those wonderful memories sitting on the floor of my Aunt’s bedroom watching the show with my little sister came flooding back to me. It’s not so much the episodes that are my favorite, but the time I shared with my sister as we watched, learned, and laughed. I’m so honored that I get to be a part of that experience with families all over the world as they watch our show.

How hard is working with the animated characters and did your work on Aladdin help at all? What has been your funniest slip up while filming Blue’s Clues & You.

As a kid I spent so much time using my imagination. Building worlds, writing stories, drawing pictures. When I became an adult, I started to develop habits that were effective and not necessarily creative. Thankfully, studying theatre requires you to constantly explore uncomfortable territory. You surrender to the unknown and use your imagination to create a world beyond the “fourth wall.” My experience with every show I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of, but particularly Aladdin, has helped me immensely. Green-Screen acting forces you to rely solely on your imagination. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had. I’m sure I slip-up all the time, but the funniest moments have been plugging Josh and Blue into different worlds during playback. Since we’re on green-screen our Digital Imaging Technician can change the background so sometimes we’re being chased by a T-rex, sometimes we’re hanging out with Keanu Reeves…Blue is an action hero at heart.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I think people would be surprised to learn that I am very much an introvert. A little ironic that I’ve chosen to be an actor for a living. I used to have a lot of trouble reading out loud in class as a kid. I was just so nervous. Theatre taught me to slow to down and shift my focus to other people in the room instead of thinking about my own fears. To listen and to immerse myself in the story. Now I pretty much read out loud for a living and love it.

Besides Blue who would you say is your favorite character on the show?

I love Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper. They are the bridge to what we as adults are thinking at home. And they’re hilarious.

Tell us about your Jiu Jitsu and how that has helped you create balance with your career? Tell us about your journey to becoming vegan.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is not only my favorite form of exercise but one of the best ways to learn how to stay in the moment. While you’re wrestling, your partner confronts you with challenging obstacles and uncomfortable situations that would normally illicit a very muscled, labored, and panicked reaction. In these situations, it’s natural to stop thinking clearly and let the panic take over. Practicing Jiu Jitsu has taught me not to panic in an uncomfortable situation and instead, take a deep breath, calm my mind and throw away my doubt so I can solve the problem in front of me. In class we’re taught that we already have the tools we need to face adversity we just need to shift our perception to use them.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is known as the “Gentle Art” because it is one of the only martial arts that can end a physical fight without hurting anyone. I think when we meet with adversity, the tendency is to fight with the people around you or to be unkind with yourself. Instead, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu teaches me to be respectful to adversity and to myself. Defeat is just an opportunity to learn about yourself and no matter what, you can survive. I’ve applied that philosophy to my entire life and have found that I’m more open to new experiences and am happier because of it.

My wife and I became vegan almost 4 and a half years ago. At that time, cancer started to appear on both sides of my family and neurodegenerative disease on her side. We decided that we wanted to be as healthy as possible for each other and our families to help minimize those risks that are becoming so prevalent in our world today. I used to be worried I wouldn’t be able to intermittent fast, or that I would become lethargic or lose the strength and athleticism I had worked so hard to get with a carnivorous diet. What actually happened was I had more energy, became stronger, and felt much better overall. Additionally, growing up neither of us had ever felt good about the process of how meat found its way onto our plates, but we felt like we “had” to eat meat. Everyone is different but for us being vegan feels so right and it’s something we wish we had realized a long time ago. My wife and I have been spending a lot more time cooking together because we’re vegan and discovered how much we love finding new recipes… even if not all of them turn out so well.

Why should parents turn Blue’s Clues & You on for their kids?

There is so much content for kids today it can be overwhelming sifting through every show trying to find something parents can trust. Blue’s Clues was created in 1996 because there was a lack of quality programming that was based on childhood developmental research. Since its premiere, it has proven time and time again that both parents and kids value and love what the show has to offer. Blue’s Clues has become a cherished childhood memory to generations of kids—many of whom are parents today. Over twenty years later, the show is just as entertaining, lovable and backed with new childhood developmental research. What’s more, parents can now share a piece of their own childhood and how the show helped them to learn and grow with their kids. Sharing experiences like this strengthens your relationship as a family and creates priceless memories like I had with my sister.

Why the 'Rugrats' Passover Episode Still Resonates with Fans More Than 20 Years Later

What makes the Rugrats Passover episode so special, more than 20 years later? InsideEdition.com spoke to Paul Germain, one of the creators of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series, Rugrats, about the episode, one of the rare TV or movie events dedicated to the Jewish holiday. To this day, he's surprised it still resonates with so many.

“It’s kind of embedded in pop culture,” Germain said. “We were really proud of it. We never thought of it as a bit deal.”

"A Rugrats Passover" first aired on Nickelodeon on April 13, 1996. It was 22 minutes long, twice the length of the average 11-minute episode. (Usually multiple installments would air in the show's 22-minute time slot.)

The episode has achieved a cult-like status among fans of the classic Nickelodeon show. Some watch it every year the way they do with "A Rugrats Chanukah".

Nickelodeon approached Germain and his colleagues about doing a Hanukkah episode following the success of their Christmas episode since Tommy Pickles is half-Jewish.

“We said sure,” said Germain, but then they suggested Passover instead since it was a more “important” Jewish holiday.

Tommy Pickles as Moses in the Passover episode

Passover is an eight-day holiday celebrated in the spring honoring the Jewish liberation out of Egypt. It’s celebrated with a seder, or ceremonial feast, on the first two nights, which includes bitter herbs, matzo and wine, all symbolic of different elements of the holiday.

It was quickly decided among the writers that the Rugrats episode would feature Angelica as the pharaoh and Tommy as Moses. While all the adults are downstairs having a seder, Grandpa Boris and the kids get accidentally locked in the attic. That’s where he tells them all about the holiday’s history.

The writers molded the story of the plagues and slaying of the first born to make it more child-friendly, Germain noted.

A Hanukkah episode did eventually air on Dec. 4, 1996, which was recently adapted into a comic, but Germain still hears from fans thanking him for the series' attention to Passover.

"What I am really proud of, is it kind of introduced Passover to kids and their parents who really didn’t know about it," Germain said. "I think it really brought people together.

“... I still get letters, ‘This is how I taught my kids about Passover,’ or people telling me, ‘This is how I learned about Passover,'" Germain, who added that he's working on a reboot of the show, continued. "It’s kind of exciting."

From Forward:

How ‘A Rugrats Passover’ became an iconic holiday special

For Millennial Jews, the coming of spring brings the anticipation of participating in cherished Pesach rituals: eating matzah, having a Seder, and watching “A Rugrats Passover.”

Twenty-five years ago this year, on April 13, 1995, Nickelodeon debuted the Jewish holiday special of what was then its most popular cartoon series – one of the first times a Passover Seder was depicted in an American television show. The episode was the highest-rated show in Nick history, and was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program. A revival of the series is currently in the works, led by the creators and many of the original writers.

In subsequent years, watching the episode, either in reruns or on Nick’s iconic orange VHS tapes, became an annual tradition for many young Jews – some of whom have maintained the tradition with their own children. When it came to depictions of Judaism in popular culture, “As a kid, the only thing that I had was the ‘Rugrats’ Passover special,” writer/director Benny Safdie told Slate last year.

A cartoon show about the inner lives of toddlers that broadcast from 1991 to 2004, “Rugrats” was highly popular and critically renowned for the way it depicted the adult world through children’s eyes. Steven Spielberg called the show “sort of a TV Peanuts of our time.” The success of the show led to three feature films, a sequel series, a newspaper comic strip, multiple video games and more than $1 billion in merchandise sales.

During production of the Passover episode, the show’s Jewish writers, producers and actors were excited by the prospect of sharing their heritage with the children (and their parents) who watched the show. But they never anticipated that the reaction would be this positive and widespread.

“We had the responsibility to be factually accurate, and we tried to get a lot of information in 22 minutes,” recalled Rachel Lipman, one of the writers of the episode. “But being entertaining was the most important part. Because if you can engage emotionally in a story, you’re going to watch it again.”

In the episode, the characters attend a Seder at the home of Boris and Minka, who are Ashkenazi Jewish immigrants and the maternal grandparents of the protagonist baby Tommy Pickles. Although there had been Jewish lead characters on television before, Tommy – whose mother is Jewish and father is Christian – was the first to lead an American children’s series. His upbringing was important to the show’s creators, Arlene Klasky and Gabor Csupo (who were themselves in a Jewish-Christian mixed marriage) and Paul Germain, who is Jewish.

Germain “loved his bubbe and wanted to integrate that remembrance of his into the stories, and didn’t realize what a touchstone it would be,” said Melanie Chartoff, who played Minka as well as Minka’s daughter Didi (meaning she sometimes had to record arguments with herself).

When she auditioned for Minka, Chartoff recounted, “I was told that the character was ‘from the old country.’ I said, ‘Which old country?’ They said, ‘The Jewish old country.’”

Chartoff is Jewish, but grew up in an assimilated home among parents who had “prided themselves on not having accents.” So to pick up the voice, she traveled to Fairfax, a Los Angeles neighborhood with a large Jewish population, and began observing Russian immigrant women.

Michael Bell, who played Boris, the grandfather character, as well as two other parental characters, said that the producers didn’t know he was Jewish when they asked him to audition. He modeled his accent after his immigrant grandfather, whom he had been imitating for years. “He would call me ‘yungele kaker,’ and when I got older, I knew what he was saying and I’d call him an alter kaker,” he said.

Chartoff and Bell said that they often had to improvise when episodes featuring their characters were written by non-Jews.

“They’d have her say, ‘Oh lordy, lordy’” – which didn’t sound in-character – “and I had to kind of come up with a Jewish improvisational thing that I would scream at my husband,” Chartoff said.

Sometimes, Bell slipped in some Yiddish vernacular that, if properly translated, wouldn’t have been allowed on a children’s show. “I would say, ‘Gei kaken afn yam,’” Bell said. “They said, ‘What does that mean?’ I said, ‘It means, “Go spit in the ocean.”’” (It actually means, “Go shit in the ocean”).

The episode itself came about when Nickelodeon executives suggested a Hanukkah episode to accompany the show’s Christmas special. But the show’s producers wanted to go in a different direction.

“We thought about it, and we said, Hanukkah does fall at the same time of year, but it doesn’t have the same significance to who we are, and we’ve seen those before,” Lipman said. “We’d like to tell a story that has the same kind of weight that Christmas had. We hadn’t seen a Passover episode before. They were so supportive, and gave us so much leeway to go forward.”

The writers settled on a plot device to allow them to tell the Passover story: Boris has a fight with Minka, then disappears. One by one, they find Boris, who has accidentally locked himself in the attic – and the rest of the characters soon find themselves locked in too. So Boris passes the time by telling them about the Exodus from Egypt.

The main baby characters imagine themselves reenacting the Exodus story. Lipman said that although the episode writers toned some of the more graphic elements of the Passover story, they didn’t have any qualms showcasing what can be a very dark tale.

“All through ‘Rugrats,’ we didn’t stay away from dark or complicated concepts,” she said. “The babies were treated as though their feelings are big, even though their physical presence is not. Our characters would understand, for example, that Pharaoh is a bully” – a perfect quality to be embodied by the character of Angelica.

The Seder story is retold fairly faithfully, though it was Rugratsified – the Hebrew slaves are babies, so Tommy, as Moses, tells Pharaoh to “Let my babies go”; the bickering twins Phil and Lil fight over who is older and therefore at risk from the plague of the death of the firstborn; Chuckie, the hapless sidekick, accidently invents matzah because he forgot to add yeast to the bread.

Lipman said her favorite scene was when Pharaoh Angelica is undisturbed by the threat of the final plague – until she calls her dad and realizes that she is a firstborn child. “I always love when she gets her comeuppance,” Lipman said.

Lipman said that making the episode gave her an unexpected insight into Seders themselves. “I realized that recreating, or retelling, or making something our own, is something that we can all do,” she said. “We’re part of a religion that needs to keep being retold and reminded. That’s why we said Passover was the most significant holiday we could choose. It’s full of tradition and ritual, and we do have to tell the story and make it a personal connection….It’s something that I had to do when I had my own kids later on.”

Chartoff, an actor and writer who often contributes columns to the Los Angeles Jewish Journal, said that when the episode first aired, she had only been to a few Seders as an adult, and so didn’t remember the Passover story before recording the episode. “They made it so simple on the ‘Rugrats’ episode that it educated everybody, including me,” she said.

Years after she recorded the episode, she married a man whose children had been “brought up on the specials.” Her new family celebrated many more Jewish holidays than she was used to, but, she said, “I felt more familiar with them because of my experience playing Minka and Didi.”

Despite the awards nominations and huge TV ratings, the impact of the episode was hard to gauge in the era before social media – though Lipman said that some fans mailed letters to the network saying things like “My kid is now proud to be Jewish.” But as the episode, and a later Hanukkah special, continued to air in reruns, and were played in homes and Sunday schools across America, its popularity grew. Today, it’s the subject of numerous nostalgic articles and listicles— and its impact on Jewish kids was even the subject of a master’s thesis in Jewish studies.

And non-Jews, too, learned about Passover from watching the episode, which made young Jews feel that the mainstream accepted their beliefs.

For Chartoff and Bell, the episode had another significance – through Boris and Minka, the show memorialized the generation of Eastern European Jewish immigrants who were passing away.

“We don’t have that sound, and that memory and tradition,” Bell said. “It’s a thing of the past. So bringing Grandpa Boris alive vocally was such a treat for me. It’s a memory and testament to my grandmother and grandfather.”

However, the depictions were not without controversy – the Anti-Defamation League complained that Boris and Minka were anti-Semitic stereotypes. Bell, who went on to serve on the Los Angeles chapter board of the SAG-AFTRA actors’ union, said he was infuriated by the charge. “My grandfather looked like that, my grandmother sounded like that,” he said. “Do you think they were supposed to look like Nicole Kidman? They looked like potatoes!”

Due to pressure from the network, “We had to change our actions and depictions a little bit,” Chartoff remembered. “I was told to alter my voice a little bit, to make her a little less of a Yiddish character.”

Chartoff said that her mother was also offended by the character. “I said to my mother that the characters were made to tickle, not to be role models,” she said. “But she was not appeased - her parents had escaped the pogroms. Her sensitivity was very heightened. I made it up to her by buying a condo with the residuals. She’s 95, still alive, living on Didi’s money.”

Lipman is now one of the writers on the Rugrats revival, though she declined to share details about the show or reveal when it would debut. “I asked if I could be on it again, and they said they’d be going with some young celebrities,” Bell said. Chartoff said that Didi would have a reduced presence on the show. As for Boris and Minka? “I think they live in Florida now,” she said.

All involved said that they were heartened that the Jewish characters of “Rugrats” – and the Passover special in particular – has had such an impact on Jewish children.

“Every year, when we read the Hagaddah, I look for ways to make it personally relevant in terms of our own lives and what’s going on around us, because there are different kinds of exoduses and different kinds of freedom,” Lipman said. “So, we can relate to what the babies are looking for.”

'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Fan Film by RE:Anime Recreates Zuko and Azula's Duel

RE:Anime has created a live-action adaptation of the epic confrontation between Zuko and Azula from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Of all the epic bending battles in Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender, one of the most memorable and emotionally driven duels was that between Zuko and his maddened sister, princess Azula-- the agni kai that the show had spent two seasons building towards.

That battle has been recreated in live-action by the crowdfunded production team, RE:Anime, who specializes in adapting scenes from anime series. There are notable differences, such as the absence of a grand palace and a very different ending from that of the original battle, but the spirit of the series is present throughout the nine minute clip and pays tribute, not just to Avatar: The Last Airbender, but its sequel series, Legend of Korra.

The short film was directed by Josh Mabie and written and produced by Nik Shaw and Josh Mabie. According to RE:Anime, the film crew was comprised of volunteers who shot and edited the sequence for free.

For the time being, this is the only live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender fans will be able to enjoy. That being said, series creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are currently producing a live-action adaptation of their own for Netflix. It was previously reported that production would begin some time this year. No further details have since been revealed. Production may be hindered by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) epidemic currently sweeping the globe, however.

Update (4/9) - We thought that was the final Last Airbender fan film we’d see from RE:ANIME, but then they came out with something else, a comic short all about Sokka getting high out of his mind on cactus juice, adapted from the season 2 episode “The Desert”:

That’s Jonathan Tanigaki as Sokka, doing a great job of translating the cartoon version of the character to live-action. He even sounds a lot like Jack DeSena. And the wavy noodle arms at the end are almost uncanny.

The Last Airbender always did a great job of balancing the high-stakes drama and character building with comedy, and clearly, RE:ANIME has a good grasp on both sides of the coin. Here’s hoping Netflix approaches its show the same way, and soon we can forget M. Night Shyamalan disastrous 2010 movie version ever existed.

Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Complete Series Blu-ray 15th Anniversary Limited Edition Steelbook Collection is now on sale.

Nickelodeon UK Sees Ratings Uptick During Coronavirus Outbreak

TV networks around the world are feeling the effects of an advertising slump as advertisers shift resources to more critical business functions during the global COVID-19 (aka coronavirus) crisis. Meanwhile, production has ground to a halt, disrupting the whole ecosystem. The only notable upside is that, with many people being forced to stay at home, there as been a big surge in TV viewing, including in the United Kingdom.

According to BARB public data for March 9-15, 2020, versus Feb. 24-March 1, 2020, Nickelodeon (UK) (including +1) reported a 10.0% ratings growth, whilst Nicktoons (UK) was up 14.3%. Cartoon Network (UK) (including +1) saw a 13.3% ratings growth and Cartoonito (UK) 12.5%. Nickelodeon's sister channel MTV (UK) (including +1) also fared well, up 13.3%, as did BT Sport by airing more sports documentaries, with BT Sport 2 up 42.9% and BT Sport 3 up 15.4%.

The ratings news echos ratings in the U.S. and India.

In the U.S., Nickelodeon saw ratings uptick during the coronavirus outbreak with more people hunkering down at home. Since Friday, March 13, 2020, Nickelodeon’s portfolio of linear networks have been up 16% with Kids 2-11 compared to the prior four weeks. On Monday, March 16, ratings surged 36% over the last four weeks’ average, and were up 15% compared to the same time period last year. Nickelodeon itself has been up 18% compared to the last four weeks, also driven by Monday’s strong rise. Ratings for that day were up 27% over the recent average, and +11% compared to last year.

Meanwhile, in India, in this period of lockdown, the kids’ category has seen a surge in viewership including the growth of the Nickelodeon franchise ratings, which has in fact fuelled the growth of the entire kid’s category. The kids’ genre has seen a 33% growth by moving up to 9% share in total TV at 2+. While the Nickelodeon franchise dominates the category with 8 out of the Top 20 shows belonging to its programming line-up. Currently, the Nickelodeon franchise leads the category with a 34% market share and has witnessed a 28% growth in ratings with a 6% increase of weekly reach and a 20% increase in weekly viewing minutes across the franchise. As families stay indoors, co-viewing of the Nickelodeon franchise has grown substantially (15+ age group has seen a 23% growth).

TeenNick Israel (יִשְׂרָאֵל) will premiere Nickelodeon International brand new live-action series Spyders on Wednesday 18th March 2020 at 11:00!

Spyders (stylised as SpiderZ; originally titled The Covurts) focuses on Anna and Noah Fisher, highly highly skilled undercover agents who work for a ECCO – Environmental Counter Crime Organization, and are tasked with fighting criminals who endanger nature or the environment. Little do they know that their three kids – Daniel (16), Nikki (15) and Tommy (12) – have discovered their secret occupation and have formed a task force of their own, named Spyders

Spyders is the first original co-production between Nickelodeon International and Israeli Nutz Productions—the subsidiary production arm of Ananey Communications Group—together with Israeli cable network HOT.

Nickelodeon has ordered 40 x 22-minute episodes, which will be distributed to Nickelodeon's international audiences spanning 170+ countries and territories via the brand’s more than 100 channels and branded blocks in 2020.

Spyders is created by Michal Cooper Keren, Tom Riles, David Guest and Patrick Quinn. The head writer is Israeli screenwriter Michal Cooper Keren, the creator of Nickelodeon Israel's Spell Keepers. The series is an original co-production between Nickelodeon International, Nutz Productions and Ananey Communications Group.

Michal Cooper Keren, who created Nickelodeon Israel's Spell Keepers, is also the series' head writer. The series is an original co-production between Nickelodeon International, Nutz Productions and Ananey Communications Group.

The series commenced filming in Israel last summer and wrapped in December 2020.

“After a long history of collaboration with Ananey, we are so excited to kick off our first co-production together with our partners in Israel,” said Nina Hahn, the Senior Vice President (SVP) of International Production and Development for Nickelodeon, when the show was first announced at global TV and digital content market MIPTV in April 2018. “We can’t wait for young fans around the world to meet The Spyders!”

Orly Atlas-Katz, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) OF Ananey Communications said, “We are thrilled to collaborate with Nickelodeon International. I am certain that with their vast experience in content for kids, HOT's programming expertise and our high-end productions abilities, this show will be something to look forward to."

Ananey is an Israeli content producer and pay-TV provider that serves as the Israeli licensor of several of Viacom’s biggest brands, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV, and produces both local and international original content.

Under the partnership, Nickelodeon has become Israel's No. 1 children's channel and, alongside Nick Jr., reaches 49 percent of the youth audience, due in large part to Ananey’s original local productions for kids and teens.

The greenlight of The Spyders comes on the heels of Viacom purchasing a minority stake in Ananey Communications Group in 2017.

Nutz entered a co-pro deal with Bunim/Murray Productions’ (Nickelodeon's The Crystal Maze) new BMP Kids division on the youth prank show Gotcha, which bowed on Nick Israel last December. Other popular Nutz series currently airing on Nick Israel include Spell Keepers, Bed & Biscuit and The Hood, which just entered its third season.
