The complete eleventh season of SpongeBob SquarePants is resurfacing, and it's bringing some of the most unforgettable characters in Bikini Bottom with it! Dive headfirst into 50 deep-sea tales of nautical nonsense! Enter DoodleBob's alternate dimension and take a trip to Bubble Buddy's hometown. Nickelodeon Russia Launches 'Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Toy Line

Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP) has announced the launch of a new collection of toys inspired by Nickelodeon's hit animated series Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in Russia! The new Rise of the TMNT product line features action figures designed after the popular cartoon characters, their weapons and their vehicles, as well as game sets and sets for role-playing games. The line will be refreshed every six months to keep fans interested in the toys.


Petia Toncheva, Senior Director of Distribution, Digital Media and Licensing in Russia, Georgia, Ukraine, the Baltic countries and CIS at Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN), said: “Viacom International Media Networks regularly conducts research on children's audiences. They show that modern children are rapidly changing their interests, tastes, and even behaviour patterns. Last year, Nickelodeon announced the restart of the [Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles] brand and introduced the Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in response to the new needs of Generation Z. The collection of toys featuring the characters of the new animated series is a long-awaited event for all fans of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and gives them the opportunity to become part of the world of their favourite characters in it's new format."

To support the launch of the new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles licensed products, a 360-degree promotional campaign is being held both in retail and in the media. For example, in flagship Детский Мир stores, Point-of-Sale (POS) materials featuring the new Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles branding have been posted, and in November 2019 and February 2020, toy sales in Детский Мир were supported by advertising on the Карусель channel, as well as on other television channels. The news follows the Карусель channel launching Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in September 2019.

Particular emphasis will be placed on supporting the toys online. On the official Gulliver YouTube channel, subscribers will be able to see both unique content based on the animated series as well as unpacking videos. The campaign will also feature the well-known science fiction writer Oleg Roy, who is starring in videos featuring items from the collection on the YouTube channel.


Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is constantly supported on Nickelodeon: on both the linear TV channel and across all digital platforms. For example, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles first premiered on Nickelodeon Russia's (Россия) YouTube channel and have already amassed 6.2 million views. On the Nickelodeon website, fans can visit the official Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles show page to find out more about their favourite characters, watch videos and play games, all localised in Russian. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles regularly airs on Nickelodeon, and is additionally available to view on Wink, МТС ТВ and IVI.

The Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles toy collection can be found on the shelves of key retailers in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, including Детский Мир.

В новой линейке игрушек представлены многофункциональные фигурки героев мультсериала, их танки и мотоциклы, а также игровые комплекты и наборы для ролевых игр. Линейка товаров будет обновляться каждые полгода, что обеспечит поддержание интереса к игрушкам «Эволюции Черепашек-ниндзя».

Петя Тончева (Petia Toncheva), старший директор по дистрибуции, цифровым медиа и лицензированию медиахолдинга Viacom в России, Грузии, Украине, странах Балтии и СНГ, сказала: «Viacom International Media Networks регулярно проводит исследования детской аудитории. Они показывают, что современные дети быстро меняют свои интересы, вкусы и даже модель поведения. El ganador del Grammy y superestrella Chance The Rapper presentará de los Nickelodeon #KCA, que se celebrarán el domingo 22 de marzo en el estadio The Forum de Inglewood (California). La fiesta más espectacular y con más slime del año, donde los niños toman el control, podrá verse en en exclusiva en España sólo en Nickelodeon el miércoles 25 de marzo a las 18:00h. Los nominados los han dado a conocer Annie LeBlanc y su hermana Hayley LeBlanc en el evento de nominados de los Kids Choice Awards que ha podido seguirse a través de los perfiles de Youtube, Instagram, Facebook y Twitter de Nickelodeon.

"Estoy orgulloso de presentar este año los Kids Choice Awards. He crecido viendo Nickelodeon y ahora por fin podre slimear a algunos de mis artistas favoritos en el escenario. ¡Esto va a ser una auténtica fiesta que nadie querrá perderse!" ha declarado Chance The Rapper.

Avengers: Endgame, con 11 nominaciones; Taylor Swift, con 5 nominaciones; y Frozen 2, Henry Danger y Lil Nas X, con 4 nominaciones respectivamente, lideran las nominaciones de este año. John Cena, DaBaby, Tiffany Haddish, Tom Holland, Brie Larson, Lizzo y Megan Thee Stallion, reciben sus primeras nominaciones estos premios, mientras que Will Smith se convierte en la estrella más nominada en la historia de los Kids Choice Awards, con su nominación número 29 este año, en la categoría de Actor de cine favorito

Taylor Swift conta com cinco nomeações, seguida de perto pelo filme Frozen 2, pela série Henry Danger e pelo rapper, cantor e compositor norte-americano Lil Nas X, com quatro indicações cada. Por sua vez, o campo das estreias conta com nomes de peso: John Cena, DaBaby, Tiffany Haddish, Tom Holland, Brie Larson, Lizzo e Megan Thee Stallion.

Entre os veteranos, há já uma vitória a reportar, uma vez que o ator Will Smith quebra o recorde e torna-se a celebridade com mais nomeações da história dos Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, com um total de 29.

Update (2/24) - During TFNY Day 2, Playmates revealed that their Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles line is currently on hold. Nickelodeon will be making an announcement about the series in April, and production is paused because the company doesn’t yet know what is going on.

Update (3/2) - According to another report from Toy Fair 2020, the publicity team at Playmates seemed to hint that a new TMNT cartoon was set to be announced for later this year.

COWABUNGA! Central Asia Design Hub Partners with Viacom International Studios to Dub Nickelodeon Series into Five Central Asian Languages

The Central Asia Design Hub project has entered into an agreement with Viacom International Studios (VIS) to acquire the rights to several popular animated Nickelodeon series in Central Asia. Under the agreement, series such as Dora the Explorer, Shimmer and Shine, Team Umizoomi and more will be translated into five Central Asian languages, including Kyrgyz, the official language of Kyrgyzstan, with technical support from the US Embassy!

Проект Central Asia Design Hub заключил соглашение с Viacom International Studios (VIS) на приобретение прав на показ анимационных сериалов телеканала Nickelodeon на территории стран Центральной Азии. Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) and Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil) will Noobees 2, the second season of Nickelodeon Latinoamérica's hit scripted series which takes viewers inside the high-stakes world of eSports, on Monday 2nd March 2020 at 17:00 in Argentina, 18:00 in Colombia, 19:00 in México and Venezuela and at 20:00 Chile and Brazil!


Update (22/2) - Nickelodeon Latinoamérica will host a special preview of Noobees 2 on the Nick Play app and on the network's YouTube channel on Friday 28th February 2020!:

Noobees 2 will see Argentine actor Julián Cerati, Colombian influencer La Pereztroica, and Venezuelan actress Karlys Romero join original castmates - Mexican actors Michelle Olvera and Andrés de la Mora, Colombians María José Vargas and Pipe Arcila, and Brazilian actor Clara Tiezzi.

Noobees 2 is written by renowned Argentine screenwriter, Marcela Citterio whose works include tween favorites Chica Vampiro, Heidi and Nickelodeon Latin America’s Yo Soy Franky, among others.


Noobees 2 was filmed in Bogotá, Colombia over five months, wrapping in October 2019, and is produced by Viacom International Studios (VIS) and The Mediapro Studios.

To celebrate the upcoming debut of Noobees 2, Nickelodeon has launched a brand new short-form digital series titled Mundo Avatar con La Pereztroica, starring La Pereztroica, which takes viewers deeper into the world Noobees. Fans can watch full episodes of Mundo Avatar on mundonick.com and mundonick.com.br (locally titled Mundo Avatar com La Pereztroica), as well as on Nickelodeon's official en Español and em Português YouTube channels. New episodes are currently being released weekly.

La nueva temporada de la serie teen, producida por Viacom International Studios y The Mediapro Studio, se estrenará en Nickelodeon Latinoamérica el próximo 2 de marzo.

Atriz revela segredo sobre série de gamers: Ninguém do elenco joga nada


O elenco de Noobees com os visuais de seus avatares no jogo: gamers só na ficção mesmo

A série infantojuvenil Noobees, do canal Nickelodeon, mostra a rotina de um grupo de jovens gamers que competem profissionalmente em um torneio online. Mas Clara Tiezzi, única brasileira em um elenco que reúne nomes de toda a América Latina, revela um segredo sobre seus colegas atores: nenhum deles é muito ligado no universo dos jogos.

"Ninguém do elenco é gamer. No máximo, alguns meninos jogam Fifa. Mas tivemos todo um laboratório, um consultor da liga de videogames foi lá conversar conosco, tirou nossas dúvidas, e nós ficamos uns dois dias jogando LoL [League of Legends, game de estratégia online]. Então, ficamos bem inteirados desse universo sem participar, de fato, dele", explica a atriz de 20 anos ao Notícias da TV.

E as cenas em que o elenco aparece diante de seus computadores jogando o game? Só a magia da televisão explica. "Na verdade, só estamos encarando uma tela verde, apertamos os botões sem nenhuma lógica e ficamos tentando lembrar as nossas falas, que muitas vezes não fazem o menor sentido para nós", admite Clara. "Mas isso é o legal de ser ator, contar histórias que não têm nada a ver com você."

Apesar de jovem, a atriz sabe do que está falando: ela tem 16 anos de carreira, e está na TV desde os sete. Clara já precisou, por exemplo, mergulhar fundo no universo da moda para interpretar a blogueira fashionista Mabi no remake de Ti Ti Ti (2010). "A gente começa a aprender os termos técnicos, pode pagar de entendido. Agora, por causa de Noobees, eu posso fingir que entendo muito de games", brinca ela.

Curiosamente, na segunda temporada da atração infantojuvenil, os games não serão mais tanto o foco. "O primeiro ano foi muito centrado nas competições, nas duas equipes e na rivalidade entre elas. Agora, existem outras coisas, que eu não posso dizer o que são, mas que chamam mais a atenção do que o videogame em si. Fica a critério da criatividade de vocês imaginar o que elas são", desconversa a artista.

Sumiço temporário

Clara Tiezzi como a fofinha Laura no primeiro ano de Noobees: ela vai voltar bem diferente à novelinha

Os novos episódios de Noobees começam nesta segunda (2), às 20h, na Nickelodeon, com capítulos inéditos de segunda a sexta. Mas os fãs de Clara Tiezzi e de sua personagem, a amigável Laura, precisarão ter um pouco de paciência: ela voltará à ação apenas na metade da temporada.

É que, quando começaram as gravações, em abril do ano passado, a atriz estava na Europa para rodar a comédia Férias em Família, do Multishow. Como a produção da Nick é sediada na Colômbia, ficaria impossível para ela conciliar os dois trabalhos. "Geralmente o ator chora porque não tem emprego, eu fiquei com dois projetos ao mesmo tempo. Não podia nem reclamar, porque ninguém ia entender", diverte-se.

A atriz brinca que chegou a ser "dispensada pelo Bob Esponja", personagem icônico do canal pago, durante 48 horas.

"Disseram que não tinham como me esperar para gravar o segundo ano, uma pena, vida que segue. Pensei: 'Meu Deus, fui demitida da Nickelodeon', corri para chorar em posição fetal. Dois dias depois, a produtora me ligou e contou que o pessoal de Miami me queria tanto nos novos episódios que eu poderia gravar de julho a outubro. Então eu volto no meio da temporada."

E o sumiço temporário da personagem será justificado de um jeitinho bem brasileiro. "Reza a lenda que a Laura foi fazer uma expedição na Amazônia com os pais dela. E ela retorna outra pessoa: era fofinha, do cabelo lisinho, a amiga que tinha sempre um sorvete. Mas volta meio Shakira, completamente diferente. Até para mim como atriz foi um desafio gostoso redescobrir a personagem", adianta ela.

Nickelodeon will premiere Ollie's Pack, a brand new animated series in April 2020! Check out the trailer below!

Ollie's Pack follows the adventures of Ollie and his Monster Pack. With the help of his friends, Ollie uses the pack to get monsters back to their own universe.

Not much is currently known about the series, including whether the series is animated or live-action, or whether it'll be targeted towards preschoolers or older kids, however, ViacomCBS (under Viacom International Inc.) has applied to register a patent for the property with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) under NICE Classes 41 - Education; entertainment: Entertainment services in the nature of continuing program series, featuring animation, comedy and drama provided through cable television, broadcast television, internet, video-on-demand, and through other forms of transmission media; providing online information in the field of entertainment concerning television programs. The patent was filed on Monday, January 27, 2020.

The Ollie's Pack is being produced in Toronto, Canada, with Lienne Sawatsky (ToonMarty) serving as a co-executive producer on the series, and Mike Girard (MTV Live, Cupcake & Dinosaur: General Services, Camp Lakebottom) serving as a writer on the show.

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Cartagena will be Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts' first destination in Central and South America, and will be home to the new family brand's first hotel outside of the Caribbean and Mexico. Feliz told Travel Agent Central that the property is expected to open roughly three years from now (2019/2020).

In 2015, Feliz and Lubo Krstajic, the company’s Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, told Travel Agent the plan was to expand Nickelodeon Hotels to Central and South America with destinations such as Brazil; Cartagena, Colombia; and Panama being heavily discussed. With Cartagena now confirmed, it is quite possible that either Brazil or Panama could be Nickelodeon's second destination in Latin America.

La cadena hotelera Karisma estaría en proceso de estructuración del primer Nickelodeon en Cartagena, Colombia, y esperan que esté incluido en el cierre financiero de 2020. Igualmente, buscan abrir otro hotel de la misma marca en Brasil. Próximamente tendrán la apertura del Margaritaville Island Reserve en Riviera Cancún y el Nickelodeon Riviera Maya.

“Actualmente, estamos en el proceso de estructuración del primer Nickelodeon Resort que habría en Colombia. Sería en Cartagena y esperamos tener cierre financiero del proyecto en 2020. Tendremos también, entre 2020 y 2021, la apertura de otros dos hoteles Margaritaville, uno en Riviera Maya y otro en Jamaica; todos ellos operando bajo nuestro galardonado concepto Gourmet Inclusive”, dijo a La República Diego Jaramillo, director general de Karisma Hotels & Resorts Latam.

En cuanto al presupuesto de ventas de la hotelera, Jaramillo comentó al mismo medio: “El presupuesto de ventas para toda la cadena es de US$400 millones y, aunque este año el turismo del Caribe se ha visto fuertemente impactado por eventos externos, vamos a cerrar en una cifra de ventas muy cercana a lo esperado y con una ocupación promedio de alrededor de 80%”.

Como informó REPORTUR.co, Karisma Hotels en Colombia desde 2018 planea traer la marca Nickelodeon, luego de México y Brasil. Además la hotelera quiere desarrollar la marca Irotama fuera Santa Marta, en destinos como Cartagena, Eje Cafetero y la Sabana de Bogotá. Igualmente, proyecta incursionar en el mercado corporativo del país, así lo anunciaba la marca en su momento. (Karisma Hotels planea traer la marca Nickelodeon a Colombia).

“Queremos traer el segundo Nickelodeon para la región en Brasil, – luego del mencionado en México- y esperamos que, en el primer trimestre del próximo año, tengamos algo ya más definido para tener programas de construcción específicos con fechas. El tercer Nickelodeon queremos que sea en Colombia y estamos buscando alternativas de dónde podría ser”, indicó Jaramillo en su momento.

Cartagena sería sede del primer hotel Nickelodeon en Suramérica

Dentro de los proyectos que tiene de expansión Karisma Hotels & Resorts en América Latina, a uno le podrían dar prioridad y se empezaría a desarrollar en los próximos años.

Se trata de un nuevo hotel, construido desde cero, de la franquicia del famoso canal de televisión infantil y juvenil, el cual sería el primero en su formato en Suramérica, y tendría como sede la ciudad de Cartagena.

Así lo anunciaron las directivas de Karisma Hotels & Resorts que se encuentran participando en la Vitrina Turística Anato que se realiza hasta este viernes en Bogotá.

Esta cadena hotelera que opera más de 30 hoteles en distintas partes del mundo y cumple 20 años de desarrollo, ya cuenta con un primer hotel Nickelodeon que se encuentra en Punta Cana, República Dominicana y en pocos meses espera tener listo uno más en la Riviera Maya en México y que supera las 380 habitaciones.

Sus creadores aclaran que si bien es un hotel de temática infantil, está diseñado para que pueda ser disfrutado por toda la familia, con las atracciones que tienen que ver directamente con los personajes principales del canal, como Bob Esponja, Dora La Exploradora y las Tortugas Ninja, pero a la vez, con espacios como el spa y zonas de relajamiento para los más adultos.

Son hoteles de grandes dimensiones que mueven un alto número de huéspedes diarios, bajo el concepto gourmet-all inclusive, que han desarrollado con gran éxito en sus hoteles en México y República Dominicana pero que aún no logran realizar en Colombia.

A finales de 2018 realizaron un primer intento con una unión con Irotama en Santa Marta. El ambicioso proyecto incluía convertir a dicho hotel al concepto de gourmet-all inclusive, que consiste en un ‘todo incluido’ pero con restaurantes de alto nivel y atención personalizada para los huéspedes. Además, Karisma ayudaría para que Irotama se convirtiera en una marca para desarrollar otros proyectos hoteleros, tanto dentro como fuera del país.

Sin embargo, la unión duró poco y a principios de 2019, de común acuerdo, terminaron con dicho convenio.

Aunque el interés de Karisma por desarrollar pronto el Hotel Nickelodeon Cartagena es muy fuerte, también planean realizar uno igual en una de las regiones de Brasil. Solo bastaría ver cual de las dos ideas primero se empieza a desarrollar.

Cartagena es una ciudad que conocen bien. Allí operan hoteles como Allure Chocolat by Karisma, ubicado en el corazón de la ciudad y a solo unos pasos del centro de convenciones.

Eastman and Laird’s turtle-empire has spawned countless comics and strips, six full-length feature films, live and animated television series, turtle toys, video games, and a roleplaying game. After the franchise moved to Nickelodeon in 2009, IDW Publishing secured the right to reprint old adventures and publish the ongoing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book series.

Under IDW, publisher of such franchise properties as Marvel Action, Star Wars Adventures, My Little Pony, Dungeons and Dragons, and Transformers, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have traveled through time and to Dimension X, teaming up with Batman, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Ghostbusters, and Usagi Yojimbo in dozens of special crossover events. During those IDW adventures, the Turtles encountered Jennika, a human runaway skilled in the martial arts, first as the villain Shredder’s head assassin and member of the ancient ninjutsu clan, the Foot and, later, under Master Splinter’s tutelage. When Jennika was wounded by an insurgent Karai, Shredder's second-in-command, intent on regaining control over the Foot, a transfusion of Leonardo’s lifesaving blood mutated her into a turtle. Now, the newest Turtle grapples with both her troubled past and the tensions brewing across Mutant Town in Jennika: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a three-issue miniseries from IDW.

While the 1997 “Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation,” live-action television series introduced a female counterpart to the Turtles, Venus de Milo, it would be another 23 years before TMNT would introduce the comic book “Belle of Shell.” Jennika, the next progression in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dynasty, cut her teeth on the mean streets of New York City and now she’s thwarting evildoers in her own dojo, Mutant Town. After mutation transfigures the entire community around her into sheep, dogs, rabbits, and other animals, the self-appointed shogun of the mutant zone earns the praise of some citizens and the ire of others. To let off steam, Jennika cracks shells to the sounds of punk-rock darlings Bat Brains, Rabid, the NYC Dogs, at the Kennel Klub, a tongue-in-cheek reference to legendary acts and the infamous Kennel Club, a hotspot in Philadelphia punk rock scene. At the Klub, the She-Devil in a Half-Shell relives her tempestuous youth in NYC punk scene, reigniting rivalries and romances from a time-gone-by and busting heads in the mosh pit. When a former flame hints at a cure to the mutation gripping the community, the assassin-turned-ally sees a light at the end of the tunnel, in the new Jennika: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from IDW Publishing.

'Legend of Korra' Artist & Editor Delve Into Importance of 'Korrasami,' Future, Past and 'Ruins of the Empire'

Commander Guan has taken democracy into his own hands as the final phase of his brainwashing invention commences. It’s up to Korra, the Beifongs…and Kuivra to stop him as the rest of Team Avatar remain under Guan’s control. Ruins of the Empire continues to dive into the political storytelling heavily prevalent on the Nickelodeon TV show as it expands on the overall Avatar and Korra mythos.

I'm sure you have many questions following the finale, luckily, Newsarama had the chance to talk to Dark Horse editor Rachel Roberts, and artist Michelle Wong, to help readers unpack the story. They discuss the future of the Avatar The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra graphic novels, the importance of Korrasami’s relationship, and the story beats that went into creating Kuvira’s redemption story.

Newsarama: Rachel, to jump right into it, I’m sure many fans want more Korra after reading Turf Wars and Ruins of the Empire, what future plans do you have for the Legend of Korra comics?

Rachel Roberts: We’re not quite ready to share specific news yet, but I think fans of both Avatar and Korra will be quite pleased with what we’re cooking up! We have several fun new projects in the works that will not only expand our publishing line, but will introduce new formats and approaches to these beloved franchises.

Nrama: What have you enjoyed the most about working on this franchise?

Roberts: Working with series creators, Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, has been an amazing learning experience in countless ways over the years. From being involved in the initial outline and script-writing phase, to looking over Bryan’s art notes, it’s fascinating to see everyone at work and how they shape the material to be the best it can be.

I’m also continuously energized by working with artist Michelle Wong and colorist Killian Ng; they both bring an enormous wealth of hard work, genuine talent, and passion to the table that makes these books what they are.

More anecdotally, I was a huge fan of the series before coming to work at Dark Horse, so joining the comics team and eventually taking over editorial stewardship of the publishing line is an immense honor. It’s near and dear to my heart, and as a queer person and a fan myself, I want to work hard and make books that readers will love.

Nrama: Why has it been so important to explore the Korrasami relationship with these graphic novels?

Roberts: Licensed titles like Avatar and Korra provide kids who might not be familiar with reading comics an accessible stepping stone into the medium - basically, they already know this world, they trust these characters, and it helps get them invested in reading. And in this case, our two lead characters are bisexual women of color. It’s crucial to acknowledge this. LGBTQ+ people of color face much more hardship than white community members and are underrepresented across all forms of mainstream pop culture. It’s critical for anyone, especially children and teens, to be able to see themselves portrayed and represented positively. There has been a growing trend of inclusion and acceptance in mainstream kids’ media recently, whether it’s comics, books, or TV, and I’m happy that Korra has a place in that. I'm looking forward to continuing and expanding upon this, now and in the future.

Nrama: How do you feel like their relationship has developed throughout these chapters?

Roberts: Coming out stories are important, but so are stories that depict same-sex relationships as an everyday normal - because they are! In Ruins of the Empire, we’ve moved past the coming out phase; Korra and Asami are busy with the ins-and-outs of their daily lives and their Team Avatar duties, but now they just so happen to be in a relationship. Just like any other couple, they have their fair share of self-doubt, nerves, strife… elemental powers and the Avatar state… electrified gloves… trips into the Spirit World… y’know, totally normal relationship stuff.

In all seriousness, it was important to us to show how these two might cope with shared stressful experiences (like Kuvira’s trial and her stint on Team Avatar) as a couple. They don’t see eye-to-eye on it, but they trust each other and talk about it, and they love and support each other even though they don’t agree.

Nrama: Michelle, how did you approach Korra and Asami’s relationship from a visual perspective as Asami transitioned from being brainwashed to her feeling guilty over her forgotten memories?

Michelle Wong: I have always enjoyed character work, and I loved getting to draw a fiercer, colder Asami with closed off body language, and then exploring her more vulnerable side when she gets her mind back. When she is brainwashed, she holds herself stiffly around Korra, in panels that visually show the space between them. Later, her posture is more unsure, while Korra is the one to approach her to show her that everything is okay.

Nrama: A large portion of this arc focuses on Kuvira’s redemption story. Why was it important to the creative team for Ruins of the Empire to tackle this story?

Roberts: When we last saw Kuvira in the animated series, she had been arrested for her crimes, but her fate hadn’t been completely resolved. She had a lot to answer for, both during her trial and to those she hurt, so it was important to explore what true reparations for her would really look like. In Part Three, we see several characters reacting to Kuvira’s redemption in different ways. Korra, Asami, Su, and Bataar Jr. each had different experiences with Kuvira and each handle her attempts at reconciliation with varying attitudes—loving acceptance, cautious optimism, and a general “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Forgiveness and acceptance take many forms, and all are valid. Similarly, change is difficult, and Kuvira really needed to put in the work to set things right.

Nrama: Michelle, what went into building the final battle?

Wong:Avatar the Last Airbender and Korra are both known for their awesome action sequences, and the reason they're held in such high regard is that at the core of a good fight scene there's good story. Every character gets their moment in the final battle of this arc, and Kuvira's faceoff with Guan in particular was not just a way to showcase her metal bending skills, but also to show her determination and change in character. I tried to keep that in mind and not focus only on the action but also the moments of emotion.

Nrama: What was your favorite thing to draw for the finale?

Wong: I'm trying not to spoil this too much for people who haven't read it yet! There's a scene near the end featuring hugs is all I will say.

Nrama: Would you like to work on an Avatar/Korra crossover at some point? Do you feel like it’s possible to see the younger versions of Avatar interact with the Korra cast in some fashion?

Roberts: That sounds like it would be super fun! I definitely think young Sokka and Bolin would get along really well, don’t you? Bolin has a ton of that genuine Captain Boomerang energy. Sadly, I don’t think this is a story arc that will ever come to fruition! We hew pretty closely to the established timeline of the show, and unless we can figure out a way to justify time travel in the Avatarverse, I don’t think it’ll happen. But that’s what fanfiction is for!

Nrama: What are you most proud of that came out of this arc?

Roberts: It’s impossible to say! There are so many things about this series I’m proud of - the story, the art, all the work that went into it…readers don’t necessarily get to see what goes into making these books, but they represent literal years of incredible, tireless work by Mike, Bryan, Michelle, Killian, letterers Rachel Deering and Ariana Maher, Dark Horse Digital Art Technicians Christianne Gillenardo-Goudreau and Samantha Hummer, Dark Horse Designer Sarah Terry, Assistant Editor Jenny Blenk, and Nickelodeon Editor Joan Hilty, not to mention our wonderful licensing, print, and prepress teams. We are fans, making books for fans, and we hope our love for the franchise shows in these pages. So I guess you could say I’m just really proud of the team!

Wong: I got to flesh out the Beifongs more, and I also got to draw my favorite Korra villain's journey to redemption. I'm really happy with the flashback sequences, and also getting to show a different side to Kuvira, even if it's just a scene with her wearing some more casual clothes like in her original Season 3 appearance around the Beifong estate again.

Nrama: One of my favorite things about the original Korra TV show is how every villain represented a different philosophy. What philosophies do you want to see explored?

Roberts: This is a really great question, and one I really needed to think about. This isn’t really a philosophy per se, but something I’ve always wondered about is how the Avatar cycle effects the economy and general relations between nations. When an Avatar passes away and the search for the new one begins, does that cause any commotion in that respective nation? Do festivals or celebrations take place? Are there holidays? Do people travel to that nation to witness the discovery of the new Avatar?

Similarly, do any of that nation’s residents react to the presence of the White Lotus, either positively or negatively? We see a bit of this at the start of Korra’s journey, but because we see it from her and her family’s point of view, it’s limited in scope. Given that the series deals with power imbalances between benders and non-benders as well as the Avatar and the people, I wonder what someone else’s view of this event would be (Red Lotus members notwithstanding).

Nrama: Are there any characters you want to see get more spotlight?

Roberts: There are a ton of characters I’d love to catch up with! Fire Lord Izumi, Jinora and the rest of the Airbender kids, Bataar Jr., Bumi and Bum-ju, Uncle Iroh, wherever he is. Like so many others, I also wonder what Azula got up to in her old age and whether she’s still kicking around the Fire Nation somewhere. I like to imagine she’s kept tabs on her brother all these years, and scoffs over her morning paper whenever he’s mentioned.

Nickelodeon: No Current Plans to Release 'It's Pony' Pilot

Nickelodeon’s latest animated series It’s Pony premiered on Saturday, January 18 and instantly became a firm favorite with fans. The debut episode scored the network’s biggest animated series launch since 2018’s The Adventures of Kid Danger, posting solid double-digit gains over last year with Kids 2-11 (2.1/453K, up +24%) and Kids 6-11 (1.9/250K, +27%). The Saturday morning premiere (Jan. 18 at 11:30 a.m.) also drew 959,000 Total Viewers. And, the series ranked as TV’s #2 animated telecast for the week with Kids 2-11, behind only SpongeBob SquarePants.


With It’s Pony becoming an instant hit, fans have been asking Ant Blades, the creator of the series, whether there are any plans to release the original It’s Pony short, which was made as part Nickelodeon’s 2015 International Animated Shorts Program. However, Ant has revealed that there are unfortunately no plans to release the show's pilot, saying on Twitter "No plans to, I'm afraid." Ant does remain optimistic, however, closing his Tweet with "One day :)".

Nickelodeon Animation has, in recent years been releasing shorts from its world-renowned Animated Shorts Program on social media, such as YouTube and Facebook. It would be fantastic if Nickelodeon Animation could release the It’s Pony pilot as part of its Animated Shorts Program collection at one point in the future!

It’s Pony (originally titled Pony) is an original 2D-animated buddy comedy that follows the life of an average girl named Annie, her (almost) average family, and what happens when an enthusiastic, unpredictable and carefree talking pony comes to live with them in their city apartment.

Throughout the season, the series will explore the everyday life and hijinks of two best friends whose optimism and enthusiasm turn any situation from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether making an epic quest down the street to mail a letter, heroically saving the local playground with a bake sale, or simply getting a haircut, Pony and Annie always stick together because life is better as a pair.

The series stars Jessica DiCicco (Adventure Time) as Annie, an optimistic and determined farm girl living in the city with her family and best friend Pony; Josh Zuckerman (Strange Angel) as Pony, who is naïve and impulsive, but loves Annie more than anything; Abe Benrubi (E.R.) as Dad, who treats Pony as a nuisance, but recognizes the special bond he shares with Annie; and India de Beaufort (All Hail King Julien) as Mom, who loves Annie and Pony’s relationship and always has a new project in the works.

The first animated comedy series to be greenlit for the U.S. from Nickelodeon International, It’s Pony is created by Ant Blades, based off a short of the same name from Nickelodeon’s 2015 International Animated Shorts Program.

It’s Pony airs Saturdays on Nickelodeon USA and will roll out internationally beginning April 2020.

Nickelodeon International Acquires '44 Cats' Season 2

Italian content powerhouse Rainbow Group, the production company behind global classics such as the legendary Winx Club saga, will debut the second season of its hit CG-animated series 44 Cats on Italy’s Rai Yoyo beginning Monday, March 2, 2020! The series is locally titled 44 Gatti in Italy.


Pay-TV partners Discovery Kids, for Latin America, and Nickelodeon, for the rest of the world, will follow with exclusive launches in the second and third quarters of the year. The season will premiere on free-to-air (FTA) broadcasters later in fall/autumn 2020.

The first season of 44 Cats established record ratings since its very first launch in November 2018, and it’s proving a sensational success: 44 Cats is on air in over 100 countries and in more than 20 languages. According to Rainbow, the series is ‘conquering major kids networks,’ such as Carousel Russia where it is currently the number one show in the country for ratings and share.

Meanwhile, CCTV 14, China’s major kids’ content channel, the show launched early in February with ratings that confirm 44 Cats as a leading show on the channel.

“Already on air on the major pay and free to air TV networks in the world and on leading digital platforms such as Netflix, Tencent and YOUKU in China, Start.ru and Yandex in Russia, 44 Cats is performing incredibly and turning into a true web phenomenon and a widespread success on YouTube, where the official channels have surpassed 320 million views in just 14 months,” said Rainbow in a press release.

The newest season comprises 52 episodes that follow the adventures of the Buffycats and Granny Pina as they are joined by new animal and human friends.

Rainbow added: “The explosive mix of action, comedy, friendship and great music makes 44 Cats a series that stands out worldwide, with a magnificent soundtrack of original songs by Antoniano.

After captivating TV, social media and the web around the world, the new chapter of the Made in Italy preschool classic by Rainbow is set to amaze again thanks to the great attention to product quality, universal values and educational content offer.”

Produced by Rainbow in collaboration with Antoniano and Rai Ragazzi, the series is billed as a growing hit for ratings and web interactions, while making a significant impact on the licensing sector. Currently, more than 100 partners from across the world and a number of product categories have signed with 44 Cats, across both national and multi-territorial deals.

Set in the world of animals, 44 Cats follows the daily adventures of Lampo, Milady, Pilou and Meatball – four adorable kittens who are part of a music band named The Buffycats.

The protagonists live and play in the Clubhouse, a garage beside old Granny Pina’s house. Their adventures explore the themes of friendship and altruism: the four cats love helping others and always find creative solutions to everyday hitches and help other cats in need. The series promotes positive attitudes and conveys educational messages dealing with important themes such as tolerance, diversity and solidarity in a funny way.

Season two of 44 Cats will contain 52 x 13-minute episodes, bringing the number of episodes of the series up to 104 x 13 minute episodes.

Celebrity dads kick off Thomas & Friends’ 75th anniversary celebrations

Harry Judd, Peter Andre and Spencer Matthews have teamed up for a ‘unique digital story showcase’.

Reading with Friends marks the start of the 75th anniversary celebrations of Thomas & Friends.

To celebrate the magic of Thomas & Friends’ storytelling, the celebrity dads read aloud a story from the very first book up to current day stories to celebrate Thomas’ journey so far.

Each of them have been captured on camera and the videos of the celebrities will be hosted on the official Thomas & Friends UK YouTube channel from today.

How Thomas & Friends is steaming into its 75th anniversary

Source takes a look at just some of the activity which is taking place across the year.

Having begun as a collection of stories in 1945 – The Railway Series – written by Reverend W Awdry to entertain his son, Thomas & Friends is now entering its 75th year of entertaining preschoolers globally. Despite taking 12 years for the first consumer products to launch in 1957, Thomas is now one of the biggest brands in preschool.

Helen Genia, senior manager consumer products at Mattel, explains: “Publishing is really at the heart of this brand, so we are delighted to be working with Egmont to publish the perfect book that features the complete collection of all 26 short stories from the famous original railway series in one stunning volume.” This will be accompanied by a full programme of book releases throughout 2020.

In April, Mattel will launch a partnership with Harrods to celebrate the heritage of Thomas & Friends with several activations in-store along with limited branded merchandise. Also in the retail sphere is a global DTR deal with H&M to produce a range of children’s apparel and accessories, and the successful partnership with M&S will continue into 2020.

Later in the year, model railroad manufacturers Bachmann will work with Thomas & Friends on a two-year licensing deal. The company’s traditional electric trains will create a realistic recreation of the property through HO (1:87) scale products in the UK and Ireland.

Mattel itself has strong plans to mark the milestone. Helen continues: “New product including engines and play-sets will be introduced across the range, with fun limited-edition items to celebrate the birthday all supported with great product from our licensing partners.”

Key to the longevity of the Thomas brand is Mattel’s commitment to build on its preschool heritage. The core values are as relevant today as when Awdry wrote the first book, and as the brand evolves, these are reflected in everything it does.

Meanwhile the property is kept fresh, as Helen explains: “The brand and content saw a ground-breaking refresh in 2018 to encourage children to discover the world around them. Introducing new locations, characters, a gender balanced Steam Team with a 4:3 boy to girl ration from the previously 6:1, new theme tune and humour through the format and narrator.”

This is also how Mattel will continue to keep the Thomas brand relevant. Helen concludes: “2020 will continue to pave the way for the next generation, with break frame moments that spotlight Thomas as the beloved British heritage brands that embraces modernisation as the world continues to change.”

Christopher Keenan, senior VP and executive producer of global content development and production at Mattel, talks to TV Kids about what’s next for Thomas & Friends and what’s new in Barbie content.

Thomas & Friends has been a staple of preschoolers’ TV schedules around the world since the 1980s. The animated adventures of a blue tank engine received a major revamp in 2017, in time for the 22nd season.

TV KIDS: What lessons were learned from incorporating the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, faster-paced stories and more girl characters into Thomas & Friends?
KEENAN: With each new content iteration, Thomas & Friends has continued to evolve on many fronts. Working with the UN and their Sustainable Development Goals was an opportunity that the creative team embraced wholeheartedly, and we were able to tell relatable stories in season 22 that brought these goals to life for our target audience. The effort continues in our branded, short-form content. The introduction of six well-rounded, prominent female characters has also been at the forefront of these most recent seasons, and we couldn’t be more pleased with how well they’ve been received by boys and girls alike. And, of course, shifting to a shorter format has prompted a much quicker pace when it comes to storytelling.

TV KIDS: Tell us about Mattel’s Barbie content.
KEENAN: Like the content for Thomas, the content for Barbie is ever-evolving. When I joined Mattel, there was a long tradition of direct-to-consumer, long-form movies or specials, with Barbie “cast” as a fantasy character (such as a fairy, a rock star, a ballerina, a superhero, etc.), and there was very little content that showcased Barbie as herself. Since then, we’ve launched Barbie Dreamhouse Adventures, an animated series that focuses on Barbie’s life in Malibu at home with her sisters and parents and at high school with her friends, as well as Barbie Vlogger, in which this same character vlogs online about current events, female role models and issues that girls and young women face every day. The response from viewers has been amazing.

TV KIDS: What are some of the keys to successfully bringing the essential qualities of a toy brand to television?
KEENAN: While all the traditional rules apply (creating an engaging world, building strong characters, crafting relatable stories, bringing it all to life with a compelling execution), there is the added agenda of showcasing a play pattern—whether it’s role-playing or nurturing or construction or so on—so that the experience can extend to toy play when the screen is turned off. Kids love to tell their own stories with characters they meet on the screen, and toys give them the tools to do this. The more successful we are with organically embedding the character and story-driven content with elements of play, the more engaged kids are, whether playing with their favorite toys or watching their favorite programs.

TV KIDS: What new forms of storytelling excite you most in the kids’ landscape today?
KEENAN: As the platform landscape has splintered and expanded, so have the opportunities for bringing characters and stories to life in unexpected ways. Seeing a resurgence in 2D animation and stop-motion is as exciting to me as all the technical advances in CG. I’m also thrilled to see new creators bringing their ideas to life through inexpensive means and getting their work seen widely and quickly online. The doors have been opened to a whole new community of talented storytellers—and we need as many of those new voices as possible.

Chicago to Welcome a ‘Good Burger’ Pop-Up to Tap into Nickelodeon Nostalgia


Chicagoans will soon be able to visit the home of the Good Burger, drink an orange soda and live out their ’90s Nick Kid dreams at a new Chicago pop-up restaurant!

After a successful run in Los Angeles, the Good Burger pop-up inspired by Kel Mitchell's fast-food sketche on Nickelodeon's All That (and the beloved 1997 movie adaptation of the sketch) will make its way east to the city in 2020. Organizers haven't announced an exact location or an opening date yet, but that's not going to stop fans from getting stoked about finally trying Ed's secret-recipe special sauce for themselves!

Good Burger LA will end a three-month run on Sunday, September 29 with delivery continuing though December, according to a news release.

The nostalgic pop-up comes from the same team behind the Saved by the Bell-themed concept Saved by the Max, which turned a Wicker Park storefront into a neon-lit diner that served Bayside Burgers and Snack Attack sundaes throughout the latter half of 2016.

Derek Berry, a partner at Beauty Bar in West Town, created the officially licensed Saved by the Bell pop-up in 2016 and the restaurant exceeded expectations with a year run in Chicago. He brought the Max to LA in 2018 and it closed in April 2018. Good Burger launched in July as a tie-in to Nickelodeon's All That revival. The Max’s success inspired many Chicago bars to hold pop-ups based on nostalgic pop-culture properties.

Eggslut founder and celebrity chef Alvin Cailan consulted on the pop-up's menu, bringing dishes like the signature Good Burger and Good Chunks (honey mustard chicken tenders) to life. The menu also features an assortment of sides (Good Fries, Good Rings, Good Pickles, Good Salad), desserts (Good Shakes, Good Pies, Good Cookies) and several orange soda-inspired cocktails. It’ll also features a meat-free Beyond Meat burger.

Cashiers also greet customers with Ed's iconic catchphrase, “Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order?”.

Cailan has experience with pop-culture properties as he developed Blue Apron’s burger kits themed after Fox’s animated series Bob’s Burgers.

Visitors may visit to try the food, but they'll want to stick around for photo-ops inside of the recreation of a locale that they likely last experienced on a standard definition television set. When the event launched in L.A., the space even included an old-school arcade with all games set to free-play mode. Throughout its run, All That cast members, including Kel Mitchell (aka Ed the Good Burger Guy) and Nick Cannon showed up for surprise appearances. Though neither detail has been confirmed for the Chicago run, fans are hoping Chicago native Mitchell swings by his old stomping ground for a visit.

While pricing hasn't been been announced for the Chicago location yet, at the L.A. incarnation of the pop-up, a $30 ticket included one signature Good Burger menu item, a side and a commemorative paper hat just like the one Ed always wore. Additional entrees, desserts, milkshakes and boozy cocktails can be ordered à la carte, so there's no need to worry about going home hungry.

The pop-up was designed by multi-disciplinary artist Floyd A. Davis IV who states “The goal of the design is to create a connection between the nostalgic visual legacy of Good Burger’s iconic past forms, and the updated aesthetic of the new season of Nickelodeon’s All That.”

The Saved by the Max space is currently occupied by Dorian’s, a restaurant/bar that hosts live music and run by Berry’s business partner Zack Eastman. Eastman (who also owns the East Room) and Berry also partnered with Steve Harris, the veteran Chicago bar owner behind Debonair Social Club. The team recruited chef Brian Fisher to create the menu for the Saved by the Bell pop-up. Fisher, who presides over Michelin-starred Entente, isn’t involved with Good Burger.

Eggslut was founded in LA in 2011 and now has four California locations and one in Las Vegas, with plans for Japan, London, and Kuwait. The restaurant specializes in egg sandwiches on fresh biscuits. There’s been rumblings of a Chicago expansion, so this move may intensify those rumors.

Good Burger started as a sketch on the TV show All That before Hollywood adapted it into a 1997 movie. The premise involved characters who work at a fictional fast-food restaurant. In the movie, Mitchell’s character, Ed, develops a beloved secret sauce that distinguishes Good Burger from the competition. The sketch frequently featured Kenan Thompson, the comedian who’s spent 16 years on Saturday Night Live— the series’s longest-tenured cast member - with Thompson also co-starring as Ed's co-worker in the theatrical.

The team’s success in working with NBC and Saved by the Bell has made an impression in Hollywood. Berry has moved to LA with his family, and when the LA crew behind a Beverly Hills, 90210 pop-up needed help, CBS hired Berry to spruce up the Peach Pit.

NEW YORK--Feb. 24, 2020--Nickelodeon has greenlit a third season of the top-rated preschool series Ryan’s Mystery Playdate, starring eight-year-old YouTube superstar Ryan of Ryan’s World. Created and produced by pocket.watch, the studio creating global franchises from the YouTube stars and characters loved by Generation Alpha, the live-action series follows Ryan as he tackles a series of imaginative, physical challenges and solves mystery box puzzles to reveal the identity of his playdate. Ryan’s Mystery Playdate ranked as the number-one preschool series on all TV for 2019, and new season three episodes will begin airing this Spring. Ryan’s Mystery Playdate airs regularly weekdays at 12:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon and 4:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on the Nick Jr. channel.

The third season of Ryan’s Mystery Playdate (20 episodes) will feature a new-and-improved Guess-O-Tron and follow Ryan and his parents as they meet exciting all-new playdates, solve complex mystery box puzzles, tackle epic dunk tank and zip line challenges, and take super silly selfies with each guest.

A playable version of the tablet is one of more than 1,000 Ryan-related products available in 75,000 stores globally. Nickelodeon said that it and the rest of the Ryan’s Mystery Playdate tie-in toyline was the third largest new consumer product of 2019 (according to data from NPD).

Since its inception in 2015, Ryan’s World has grown to become one of the world’s largest YouTube channels in the world. The channel features fun and easy science experiments, educational content, animated adventures, imaginative toy play and videos that document daily life for the family of five, which includes Ryan’s younger twin sisters. The channel, along with other channels featuring Ryan and his family and animated friends, generated over 1.3 billion views in January 2020 and currently has over 34 million subscribers. How Ryan’s YouTube Playdate Created An Accidental (Eight-Year-Old) Millionaire

The namesake star of Nickelodeon’s preschool hit Ryan’s Mystery Playdate appears on set in a bright orange space suit ready to embark on an imaginary interplanetary adventure with his parents.

With a snap of the clapboard his mother, Loann, offers up the skit’s opening line — “Spaceship to aliens...” — before her then-7-year-old cuts her off: “It’s ‘Mothership to aliens…,” her son corrects, stopping production and the 58-member TV crew behind it.

“Ryan, never correct the mother ship,” gently chides executive producer Jeff Sutphen from the director’s chair.

Ryan shrugs off the admonition. He routinely memorizes everyone’s lines, and will sometimes be caught on camera mouthing dialog along with his parents — forcing the occasional re-shoot. His father, Shion Kaji, jokes that if he hesitates even slightly with his delivery, he worries Ryan might steal his lines.

“I have a lot of words,” Ryan says in his own defense.

Not that he needs to defend himself. One of the leading child influencers on the planet, his Ryan’s World YouTube channel boasts 24 million subscribers, and Forbes estimates he earned $26 million in 2019, enough to make him the country’s highest paid YouTuber.

Kaji’s mindshare among preschoolers is so big that ViacomCBS network came running to him in its bid to stem the outflow of child viewers. Two years ago Nickelodeon turned to Pocket.watch, a digital studio devoted to turning YouTube stars into global franchises, to bring Ryan to the kids’ TV network that’s been home to such iconic children’s characters as SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer.

Welcome to the new world of children’s television. Once the domain of educators, pediatricians and psychologists concerned with fostering child development and school readiness, the D.I.Y. culture of the internet has thrown open the doors to anyone with an attention-grabbing idea. Sure, you can still find Big Bird on TV (though the feathery Sesame Street icon has moved his nest to HBO) and reruns of Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood online. But those classics are getting crowded out by shows like JibJab’s Gregg and Evan Spiridellis, whose StoryBots monochromatic robot characters were born on YouTube and now live on Netflix, or the husband-and-wife duo, Derek and Cannis Holder, who created the popular YouTube channel Little Baby Bum, a collection of nursery rhymes.

These home-grown shows have attracted global audiences in the millions. “If you were a creator in the ‘80s, you'd walk into Nickelodeon and Disney and hope that the executive in charge of making decisions thought that you had something worthwhile,” says Gregg Spiridellis. “That person is no longer relevant if you're a creator with the ability to actually make something. You can put it out into the world and get validation. These open platforms — YouTube, Instagram — give you the opportunity to go prove the worth of your content in a way that was never possible before.”

A digital native, Ryan grew up on YouTube, singing along to nursery rhyme videos and watching “unboxing videos,” one of the peculiar genres of the platform, in which objects — toys, electronics, you name it — get unpacked to great fanfare. The breakout began one spring day when Ryan, age 3, asked his mother: “How come I’m not on YouTube?”

On a lark, Loann drove him to Target and bought a Lego Duplo train set, which Ryan unpacked in his first “unboxing” video. Shot on an iPhone without edits, attention to lighting or animation, the video looks painfully amateurish today. Her son loved them, though, and so did family members in Vietnam and Japan, who enjoyed watching him grow up from a distance. “YouTube was this great platform for us to broadcast Ryan’s growth,” Shion recalls.

A single video changed the trajectory of the home-movie project and thrust the Kajis into the vanguard of YouTube’s burgeoning tribe of family vloggers. A student of the new medium, Ryan had noticed a novel twist to the unboxing genre, which featured kids cracking open giant eggs with multiple toys, instead of ripping open one box at a time.

The Kaji version became “GIANT Lightning McQueen Egg Surprise,” a seven-minute video, in which Ryan is roused from his Lightning McQueen race-car bed to extract toy cars, trucks and airplanes of various sizes from a giant red egg. The resulting video has been watched more than 1 billion times. Suddenly they found themselves accidental successors to TV legends like Fred Rogers, Sesame Street creators the Children’s Television Workshop (now the Sesame Workshop) and Muppet-maker Jim Henson.

“After four months, we were one of the top kids’ creators,” says Shion, in an interview conducted from the family’s 9,000-square-foot production facility in Texas. Still, as improbable as it seems, no one in the family thought about cashing in on all that traffic until Loann stumbled upon a post about monetization while seeking tips on improving the quality of the videos.

“I was like, ‘Hon, you can make money on YouTube.’ Shion’s response, recalls Loann, was ‘Are you sure?’”

She was, and she set a goal of $20 a week, enough to cover the cost of buying a new toy for Ryan to unbox each week, like a never-ending birthday celebration. When the first check arrived, for $100, “I was so proud,” she says. It was nothing, in retrospect: By the fall of 2016, the charismatic 4-year-old with an infectious smile and affinity for Thomas & Friends trains and cars had amassed an online following of 4 million subscribers.

Shion and Loann quit their day jobs that year and devoted themselves full-time to the family’s budding media empire. They hired a video editor so they could focus on that aspect of production they enjoyed most: spending time with Ryan, playing around and filming. To shelter their son from burnout, they drew inspiration from Japan’s Virtual YouTubers, which feature anime-style cartoon characters who attract sizable online followings. The Kajis created animated alter-egos like superhero Red Titan (Ryan drew the stick-figure prototype himself), and an adventurous alligator, Gus the Gummy Gator. Today they have a roster of six virtual “friends” for Ryan, each depicting a facet of his personality.

As the output expands, so does the team. Twenty-eight animators, video editors and other creatives working for the family’s production company, Sunlight Entertainment, now generate the steady flow of educational videos, kid-friendly science experiments and cartoons that populate the eight channels that comprise Ryan’s World.

It’s not been a completely smooth ride, all things considered. The consumer watchdog Truth in Advertising filed a complaint last August with the Federal Trade Commission, accusing the Kajis’ YouTube channel, previously known as Ryan ToysReview, of deceptive advertising, saying it’s difficult for preschoolers to discern Ryan's “innocent antics” from paid endorsements. The complaint cited as an example one June 2019 video, in which Ryan operates a make-believe Hardee’s drive-through window and delivers a “Star Pals” meal to his father. It’s the same month that the fast food chain announced a toy promotion featuring Ryan.

The regulatory agency hasn’t announced any public action against the YouTube channel, though this month the FTC said it would begin reviewing its guidelines concerning influencer marketing on social media, potentially ensnaring the Kajis and other online influencers in a cultural and political scrum over the commercialization of childhood.

Shion says he welcomes direction from regulators and works with a legal team to help identify online content that’s advertising. “The one thing that was very difficult for all the influencers (is) there was no clear guidance from FTC until recently,” he says.

Sorting it all out will be critical to keeping the millions flowing, even as Shion and Loann strive to balance the demands of Ryan’s budding entertainment career with their desire to give their son the life of a typical elementary-school kid. He attends public school and maintains a crowded calendar of after-school activities that includes playing Fortnite and Roblox with friends online, swimming (he’s perfecting his backstroke), computer coding, Taekwondo (he’s working toward earning a green belt) and gymnastics, where Ryan’s kinetic energy is expressed through headstands and flips.

In a room surrounded by scores of toys that bear his image, the child phenomenon reflects about the quirks of internet celebrity, and how complete strangers will approach him, and call him their best friend.

“They're like ‘Ryan I saw you on my iPad and your mom and dad on my iPad too,’” Ryan says, nervously tugging on the long sleeves of his green shirt and swiveling back and forth on an office chair. He says he’s found it easy to make friends at school. “Some knew me just from who I am. Some people know me from YouTube.”

Put him in front of a camera, though, and he comes alive. Posing for photos, he offers up a fresh expression with every shutter click, sporting a big grin and thumbs up, an eye roll with a tongue out, another confidently grinning with arms folded, poking a finger at the lens, shrugging. It may be a hint of things to come. At the end of his first season on Nickelodeon, he penned a thank-you note to the director.

“Next season,” he wrote. “I want to direct, too.”
