VisitEngland launches Peppa Pig inspired campaign to encourage families with young children to take a break at home


VisitEngland has this week launched a digital campaign to promote family-friendly experiences in a bid to get more families with young children to take short breaks in England.

Working with eOne, brand owners of the award-winning British children’s animated television series Peppa Pig, the campaign aims to inspire young families to plan their next adventure in England.

VisitEngland has created a Peppa Pig inspired online hub on its website featuring 25 experiences for pre-schoolers and their families, all inspired by the adventures Peppa has in the show. The hub is being promoted across VisitEngland’s digital channels to drive online traffic. Once on VisitEngland’s microsite young fans can view clips from the show by clicking on a Peppa Pig style map on the site. A children’s activity sheet and tick list are available to download to help them follow in Peppa’s footsteps.

Statistics show that the family market represents about a third of the potential domestic tourism market in England. With the pre-school family segment free to travel through the shoulder season, it is hoped that targeting this audience can spread tourism’s economic benefits across more of the year including off-peak.

The campaign will be boosted from mid–February with paid-for digital advertising.

Working with Global, owners of Heart FM radio, VisitEngland is also promoting the campaign through a national radio competition voiced by Peppa Pig and her family.

In 2018, British families took 15.3 million domestic breaks in England spending £3.4 billion. According to the latest VisitEngland research spending quality time with family and friends was cited as the main reason for taking a UK break amongst this audience, with family attractions, getting outdoors and going to the beach scoring highly amongst favourite activities.

The £650,000 campaign is expected to generate more than 225,000 additional overnight stays in England from families in 2020 adding a £16.5 million boost to the economy.


Tourism is worth £127 billion annually to the UK economy, creating jobs and boosting economic growth across its nations and region.

Nickelodeon Launches Revamped NOGGIN Service in Latin America and Brazil

Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) has revamped Noggin, the network's top-ranked video subscription service for preschoolers!


The latest version of the service, which continues to offer premium content for preschool aged children, allowing them to learn whilst playing, is now available for users in Latin America and Brazil to download via the Google Play Store (Android), Apple App Store (iOS). Subscribers can also access NOGGIN through the Noggin website. Noggin is also available through cable, internet and mobile phone operators throughout the region.

With a new dynamic interface and friendly browsing experience that includes fan-favourite Nick Jr. characters, the ad-free service also features "Garden Academy", a new and exclusive section of NOGGIN that has been created by Nickelodeon in collaboration with the Ecuadorian of the prestigious Swiss academy The Bénédict International Language School. “Garden Academy” offers an English curriculum for preschoolers through new activities and characters.


In addition, the new version of Noggin has incorporated new educational games, a section for music videos, as well as interactive videos that invite children to have fun with their favorite characters by touching and sliding the screen, or even speaking to foster learning experiences that promote science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) and socio-emotional skills.

Since the launch of the application, Noggin has experienced continuous growth in terms of its subscriber base - including 100,000 subscribers in México alone - and has continued to double the number of programs and episodes available on the platform year-on-year (YoY). To date, the application presents a catalog with more than 30 preschool titles and more than 1,000 episodes and educational episodes and modules combined.

The new App also covers a lot of content in both short and long formats, including PAW Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Dora the Explorer, Blue's Clues and Rusty Rivets, along with other Nick Jr. shows, such as the newly added Wonder Pets. New episodes of popular series and thematic specials are released every month, in addition to new series.


During 2020, Noggin will continue to expand its presence throughout Latin America via new platforms that include e-books, Android TV and Roku, and will launch new programs and preschool content which will be available for offline browsing.

El servicio actualizado, que ofrece contenido Premium para que los niños aprendan jugando y tengan una experiencia de navegación dinámica y amigable, puede descargarse en Play Store (Android), App Store (iOS) o ingresar desde la web. Noggin también estará disponible a través de operadores de cable, de internet y telefonía móvil de la región.

Con una nueva interfaz que incluye los personajes favoritos de Nick Jr., el servicio de acceso seguro y sin publicidad de América Latina también cuenta con "Garden Academy", una nueva sección exclusiva de Noggin, y creada en colaboración con la oficina de Ecuador de la prestigiosa academia suiza “The Bénédict International Language School”. “Garden Academy” ofrece un plan de estudios en inglés para niños en edad preescolar a través de nuevas actividades y personajes.

Paw Patrol, Dora la Exploradora y Blue formarán parte de la oferta de Noggin, la plataforma de streaming de Nick Jr. que quiere conquistar a los más pequeños ofreciendo no solo los capítulos de las series, sino juegos y actividades educativas por 49 pesos al mes.

La firma realizó un estudio en diversos países y determinó que lo que los papás quieren para los niños de menos de seis años es que sus hijos accedan a un producto mucho más educativo y por ello esta plataforma opta por tener un 70% de contenido y 30% de educación y entretenimiento.

Entre las actividades que los pequeños pueden tomar está The garden academy, una sección con 40 episodios diseñados para que los niños aprendan inglés a través de actividades interactivas. Y es justo esta interfaz didáctica la que diferencia a Noggin de otras plataformas como Disney+, Netflix y Apple TV+, que también se han enfocado en la creación de contenido infantil .

“Somos el productor más grande de contenidos para el mundo de preescolar y necesitábamos tener un producto que se diferenciara mucho de Nick Jr. y Nickelodeon (...) Vemos la industria muy competida, más en el mercado de adultos porque hay muchas plataformas, pero en este mundo sí tenemos una oportunidad de ser los líderes”, indicó Eduardo Lebrija, director general para Latinoamérica Norte y VP senior de Ad Sales Panregional en ViacomCBS Networks Americas.

Uno de los competidores directos de esta oferta de endutaiment es YouTube Kids, la app diseñada para niños de entre 2 y 8 años. La plataforma para los más pequeños fue creada para asegurarse de que el contenido que los pequeños ven es seguro y familiar.

De acuerdo con Statista, el 64% de los niños entre 2 y 5 años y el 78% de los de 6 a 11 años utilizan una tablet y YouTube es la aplicación más usada para ver videos en línea. La plataforma de videos de Google cuenta con canales como Chuchu TV Nursery y El Reino infantil que cuentan con 30.5 y 29.2 millones de suscriptores.

Respecto a Disney+, aún sin fecha de llegada para el mercado mexicano, el ejecutivo dijo que la estrategia de ambas compañías es distinta.

“Lo de Disney+ es muy interesante porque siendo el líder en su nicho vimos cómo le quitó oferta a otras plataformas de contenido. La estrategia de Noggin no es la misma. Contando a Disney, en preescolar tenemos más y mejor contenido en el sentido de lo que ofrecemos a los más pequeños”, agregó.

Noggin ya cuenta con 100,000 suscriptores en México, pero su apuesta para el mercado mexicano es crecer en doble dígito en suscriptores y aumentar el número de exhibidores. Actualmente,la plataforma puede descargarse de la Play Store y la App Store. Además, a lo largo del 2020 se podrá ver en Total Play, Cinepolis Klic y Roku.

Pero el contenido de Nickelodeon para niños mayores continuará exhibiéndose en la aplicación de Paramount+ y también se producirán nuevas películas animadas y series animadas para Netflix .

Noggin, el servicio de streaming de Nick Jr se renueva en México: 1500 episodios para niños por 49 pesos al mes

Noggin inició como un canal de televisión en 1999 dirigido para el público pre-escolar de entre los 3 y 6 años y para 2015 decidieron dar el salto a una plataforma totalmente digital que recibe un “lavado de cara”. La empresa anunció que su nueva interfaz será mucho más amigable, además de estar acompañada de los personajes más importantes de Nick Jr.

En Xataka México tuvimos la oportunidad de charlar con Eduardo Lebrija, director general para Latinoamérica norte y vicepresidente senior de ad sales panregional en ViacomCBS Networks Americas para que nos cuenta un poco más de los cambios en la plataforma y del contenido que estrenarán como parte de las novedades.

El cambio más grande de la actualización radica en el cambio de imagen, donde la interfaz será más sencilla y práctica para cualquier usuario. Actualmente cuentan con más de 1,000 episodios que catalogan como “icónicos” de la biblioteca completa, aclarando que existe contenido adicional como videos cortos, musicales o contenido educativo que se actualiza semanalmente.

Una de las adiciones más interesantes es ‘Garden Academy’, un programa que señalan fue diseñado para enseñar inglés a los más pequeños, por medio de contenido y actividades interactivas, el programa cuenta con 40 diferentes episodios.

Hablando de los contenidos interactivos, Lebrija nos comentó que se incorporó nuevos juegos educativos, además de una sección de videos musicales y un apartado donde los personajes más populares de la plataforma invitan a los menores a interactuar en diferentes videos.

“El contenido interactivo que ofrece Noggin permite a los niños interactuar tocando y deslizando la pantalla, o incluso hablando para fomentar experiencias educativas que promueven la ciencia, la tecnología, la ingeniería, las matemáticas y las habilidades socioemocionales.”

Respecto al contenido creado para menores, preguntamos si en realidad existen estudios que respalden el contenido y que demuestren que puedan ser educativos, ante eso nos mencionó que en 2018 Nickelodeon lanzó una encuesta, donde el 48% de los entrevistados pidieron más contenido educacional en la plataforma y señala que todo ese contenido es creado por expertos que cuentan con más de 30 años de experiencia en educación preescolar.

Entre sus series más populares se encuentran programas como ‘Paw Patrol’, ‘Dora y sus amigos: Into the City!’, ‘Blaze y los Monster Machines’ y ‘Rusty Rivets’.
Por el momento el servicio solo se encuentra disponible con una aplicación para iOS y Android, con un precio de 49 pesos al mes, pero también se puede ver por medio del navegador de internet y de algunos operadores de cable. Entre sus planes, esperan que durante 2020 la aplicación pueda llegar a Roku, Android TV y hasta en libros electrónicos.

Actualmente Noggin es definido por la empresa como el servicio de suscripción de video sin publicidad de Nick Jr en México, ofreciendo el contenido más popular del canal, con la posibilidad que lo pueden ver en cualquier momento y sin interrupciones.

Nickelodeon Latin America has released a revamped version of its Noggin app, which offers preschoolers playable educational content and experiences using kid-friendly navigation.

With a new interface that features Nick Jr. characters, the safe and ad-free Latin American service also introduces Garden Academy, a section of the app created in partnership with the Ecuadorian chapter of The Bénédict International Language School. Nick Jr. creates Garden Academy for Noggin

Made in partnership with The Bénédict International Language School, the SVOD app in LatAm has 40 new preschool videos teaching English.

Viacom Digital Studios International (VDSI) Americas is creating a new section for Nick Jr.’s edutainment app Noggin called Garden Academy(pictured). The new section includes 40 different learning modules led by a team of puppets.

Through the interactive video content, preschoolers in LatAm will be able to learn about animals, colors, numbers and other themes in English using a certified curriculum. The Noggin app is available throughout Latin America on the Google Play and Apple App stores and through local pay-tv, internet, mobile, and broadband providers in the region.

Garden Academy was created in partnership with the Ecuadorian chapter of Swiss Academy The Bénédict International Language School.

Noggin has been going through several changes in the last year, including acquiring early childhood learning platform Sparkler and installing its co-founder Kristen Kane as its new EVP to oversee integration of the two apps. It also revamped the platform to make it easier for kids to find content and improve discoverability. More recently, Noggin hired former Sesame Street exec Michael Levine as its new SVP of learning and impact, reporting to Kane.

Nick Jr.’s Noggin App Expands Offering

Viacom Digital Studios International (VDSI) Americas has launched a new section within Nick Jr.’s Noggin app called Garden Academy.

Garden Academy offers preschoolers an English-language curriculum that allows them to pick up basic expressions of the language in an innovative and entertaining way. The new educational offering comprised of 40 modules also allows preschoolers to learn about animals, colors, numbers and other themes in English via a certified curriculum.

Through an interactive experience hosted by puppets, Tim the teacher and students Col, Monte, Rose and Margarita, preschoolers gain knowledge of the language via interactive games and activities.

VDSI Americas developed Garden Academy in partnership with the Ecuadorian chapter of the prestigious Swiss academy The Bénédict International Language School, with over 100 centers around the world and more than 45 years of providing English-language instruction to children and adults.

Noggin is available throughout Latin America on the Play Store (Android) and the App Store (iOS) and through local pay-tv, internet, mobile and broadband providers in the region.

Nickelodeon is preparing for the return of The Midnight Society with the all-new Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-part limited series event. Based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic, and reimagined for a new generation, Are You Afraid of the Dark? part one of Are You Afraid of the Dark? will debut on Nickelodeon Poland (Polska) on Saturday 11th January 2020 at 19:35, with Parts 2 and 3 airing on Saturday 18th and Saturday 25th January 2020! The series is titled Czy Boisz Sie Ciemności in Poland.

Across the three hour-long episodes, Are You Afraid of the Dark? will follow members of an entirely new Midnight Society, who tell a terrifying tale of the Carnival of Doom and its evil ringmaster Mr. Tophat, only to witness the shocking story come frightfully to life. In the just-released trailer, viewers meet the new members of the Midnight Society, get a glimpse at the uncertainty that awaits and prepare for an adventure beyond their wildest nightmares.

In Part One, "Submitted For Approval", tormented by nightmares, the new girl in school feels and out of place until a mysterious group invites her to join. All she has to do is tell a truly terrifying story.

In Part Two, "Opening Night", when a friend's disappearance seems to be linked to Rachel's story, the Midnight Society decides to attend the Carnival of Doom. Is it the same carnival from her nightmares? How?

In Part Three, "Destroy All Tophats", with her friends' lives at stake, Rachel decides to take charge and end Mr. Tophat's reign of terror. Will the story have a happy ending, or is the Midnight Society doomed?


The new members of the Midnight Society are: Rachel, played by Lyliana Wray (Top Gun: Maverick); Gavin, played by Sam Ashe Arnold (Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.); Akiko, played by Miya Cech (Rim of the World, Always Be My Maybe); Graham, played by Jeremy Taylor (IT: Chapter Two, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween); and Louise, played by Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl, The Worst Witch). The Carnival of Doom’s ringmaster, Mr. Tophat, is played by Rafael Casal (Blindspotting).

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is produced by ACE Entertainment (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, The Perfect Date) with ACE founder Matt Kaplan and Spencer Berman serving as executive producers. The series is written by BenDavid Grabinski (Skiptrace, Happily) and directed by Dean Israelite (Power Rangers movie, Project Almanac), both of whom are also executive producers. Chris Foss is also an executive producer.

One of the Nickelodeon’s most iconic series from the ‘90s, the original Are You Afraid of the Dark? delivered riveting stories of horror to young audiences, all from a kid’s perspective. Are You Afraid of the Dark? is owned by DHX and was created by D.J. MacHale and Ned Kandel, who are also executive producers on the project.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? made its world premiere on Nickelodeon in the U.S. on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), as part of the network's Halloween programming highlights.

Nickelodeon Poland (Polska) will be adding some sparkle to the recipe with Just Add Magic, premiering Monday 17th February 2020 at 14:15! In the spellbinding new U.S. live-action family television series, three best friends discover a magical cookbook that helps them uncover mysteries that span generations. Following its debut, Nickelodeon Polska will serve up extra helpings with new episodes airing regularly weekdays at 14:15.


The news follows Nickelodeon acquiring the international broadcast rights to Just Add Magic and its upcoming spin-off series, Just Add Magic: Mystery City.

In Just Add Magic, Kelly Quinn and her two BFF's, Darbie and Hannah, stumble upon her grandmother's mysterious cookbook in the attic and discover some far from ordinary recipes. When the Shut'em Up Shortcake silences Kelly's pesky little brother and the Healing Hazelnut Tart heals Darbie's ankle, the girls discover they have the power of magic.

In the lively town of Saffron Falls, teenage girls Kelly, Darbie, and Hannah are best friends who love cooking. While making a cake for Kelly's grandma's (who has a mysterious illness and cannot talk) birthday, the girls use a magical recipe using an ancient cookbook that they found in the attic. The recipes they find inside have strange names like "Shut'em Up Shortcake" and "Hazelnut Healing Tart" and require unusual ingredients, such as "Cedronian vanilla" and "Taurian thyme". The girls go to Mama P.’s shop to get the ingredients for the “Shut ‘em Up Shortcake” and when no one has any idea what they need, Mama P. reveals that she knows what the ingredients are, and she gives them the Cedronian Vanilla. They bake the cake, but when Kelly's brother Buddy and Hannah eat a bite of the shortcake and find themselves unable to talk, the three friends realise they are dealing with magic spells. At the same time as Hannah and Buddy's silence, Darbie cannot stop talking. Because of this, they also realise the spells come with a consequence.


Throughout season one, Kelly, Darbie, and Hannah investigate the magical recipes and face the temptations of using magic to help overcome the everyday challenges of being middle school girls. They conclude that Mama P. knows about the magic because she appears to have extensive knowledge of magical ingredients. Furthermore, they discover that the creepy neighbour Ms. Silvers also has a connection to magic after she warns them to stay away from it, telling them that it is dangerous. The girls realise that they are the protectors of the magical cookbook and that there were many others before them, three of whom were Mama P., Ms. Silvers and Kelly's grandma Becky. Among all this, Kelly has one overriding goal: to find the magical recipe that will fix her grandmother's mysterious illness, even if it means crossing creepy Mama P. or scary Ms. Silvers. As the girls work together they find out that Kelly's grandma Becky is under a curse, and so are Mama P. (whose curse does not let her leave Saffron Falls) and Ms. Silvers (whose curse does not let her play the piano in public). The girls, while trying to free Grandma Quinn of her curse, uncover various mysteries of the past.

Nickelodeon Poland (Polska) will premiere All New All That, a revival of the Nickelodeon's iconic '90s sketch series featuring a talented and diverse group of comedians who reflect the spirit and humor of today’s generation of kids, on Sunday 1st March 2020! Nick Polska will launch All That by airing the first two episodes back-to-back at 19:10 and 19:35, respectively. Following launch, Nickelodeon will continue to debut two new episodes of All That back-every Sunday at 19:10 and 19:35, respectively.

Ranging in age from 12-15, each new All That cast member brings their own unique comedic skill to the show, from impressions of today’s biggest celebrities, to original characters inspired by their lives, to physical comedy sketches, revitalizing the series for today's audience. New original comedic sketches include “Cancelled with Nathan,” Bed, Bath & Beyoncé” and “Marie Kiddo.” Executive produced by original cast members Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell, All That will air regularly on Nickelodeon in Australia and New Zealand.


The new Kids of Comedy are:

· Ryan Alessi– Born and raised in Chicago, Ryan Alessi, 14, began studying improv comedy at age eight with The Second City Improvisational Comedy Troupe. After moving to Los Angeles, he started studying with The Groundlings and developing his own characters and performing various impressions and accents.

· Reece Caddell– A Denver native, Reece Caddell, 12, started acting at the age of five and began performing sketch comedy when she started a YouTube channel with her two older sisters.

· Kate Godfrey– Kate Godfrey, 15, is an actress, singer and dancer from Scottsdale, Ariz. She began her career in her local community theater at the age of nine and was quickly accepted to the Broadway Youth Ensemble where she performed in New York City.

· Gabrielle Green– Gabrielle Green, 14, moved to Los Angeles to pursue her acting career after studying theatre at BAK Middle School of Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, Fla. Her credits include acting, voiceover work and working as a brand representative.

· Nathan Janak– Originally from Sugar Land, Texas, Nathan Janak, 14, began acting at six years old. In 2016, he participated in a nine-month intensive actor training program and later moved to Los Angeles. Janak has previously been seen as a guest star in Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger.

· Lex Lumpkin– Lex Lumpkin, 13, is an actor, singer, writer, impressionist and pianist from Indianapolis. His acting career began two years ago when he played the role of “Stuart” in the Indianapolis Repertory Theater’s production of Stuart Little.

· Chinguun Sergelen– Raised in Chicago, Chinguun Sergelen, 13, began acting at age nine. He is a Youth Ensemble member at The Second City Training Center Chicago and Laugh Out Loud Theater.

· Aria Brooks– Joining the cast for the second half of the new season will be Aria Brooks from Atlanta, Georgia. Brooks’ career is on the rise. She plays a younger version of Harriet Tubman in the upcoming film Harriet and will be featured in Netflix’s Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings anthology.

In the series premiere, the new All That cast will be joined by original All That cast members Kel Mitchell, Lori Beth Denberg and Josh Server, who impart advice and words of wisdom to help the new cast sharpen their comedic skills. The episode will also feature a performance by Grammy®-nominated multiplatinum powerhouse trio Jonas Brothers of their smash hit “Sucker.”

Shot in front of a live studio audience, this season of All That will see beloved roles are reprised in some of the series’ most memorable sketches including Mitchell as Good Burger's "Ed"; and Denberg as “Ms. Hushbaum,” the hypocritical “Loud Librarian.”

The season will also feature musical performances from today’s hottest artists, including JoJo Siwa, Young Dylan, Ciara, H.E.R., Ella Mai, Ally Brooke, Kane Brown, Bryce Vine, Daddy Yankee and CNCO, with surprise guests from the worlds of TV, film, comedy and more. The series will also host a Zoey 101 reunion, which will see Jamie Lynn Spears with fellow Zoey 101 castmates Paul Butcher, Sean Flynn, Kristin Herrera, Chris Massey, Erin Sanders and Matthew Underwood in an all-new version of the sketch “Thelma Stump.” Shot in Los Angeles, Calif. in November 2019, the new sketch features Spears reprising her role as the bacon-loving bodyguard who attempts to stop the All That cast members and stars of Zoey 101 from entering the set.

The series also features a appearance from Alisa Reyes, who, along with Mitchell, Thompson, Denberg and Server, helped make the original series a ‘90s icon for an entire generation of kids.

The show's iconic '90s theme song, "All That", performed by TLC also makes a welcome return.

All That was Nickelodeon’s longest running live-action series with 171 episodes across 10 seasons from 1994 to 2005. The franchise paved the way for a number of successful spinoffs, including: Kenan & Kel, The Amanda Show and The Nick Cannon Show; the feature-length film Good Burger; as well as audio recordings, books, festival tours, and numerous reunions celebrating the show’s impact on pop culture. All That was created by Brian Robbins and Mike Tollin.

All That helped launch the careers of comedy stars including Kenan Thompson, Amanda Bynes and Nick Cannon, and has featured musical guests and guest stars including Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Usher, Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond), Brittany Snow, and Tia and Tamera Mowry from Sister, Sister.

Geraldine Laybourne to be Inducted Into The Television Academy's 25th Hall of Fame Class

The Television Academy's Hall of Fame Selection Committee today announced that groundbreaking female executive and entrepreneur Geraldine Laybourne, the first president of Nickelodeon, as one of the five television legends that will be inducted into the 25th Hall of Fame class.


The Hall of Fame honors those who have made outstanding contributions in the arts, sciences or management of television over a lifetime career or via singular achievements.

The ceremony and red carpet arrivals will take place on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, at the Television Academy's Saban Media Center.

Laybourne begun her tenure at Nickelodeon in 1980 when she was hired as a program manager at the then one-year-old network, where she initiated the focus-group approach to programming.

Laybourne was one of the first people to focus on television programming for kids. She spent 15 years at Nickelodeon, taking over the management of the network, and started accepting advertising for the network, in 1984.

Laybourne and her team were responsible for creating and building the Nickelodeon brand, launching Nick at Nite and expanding the network by establishing it in other countries, developing theme parks, opening the Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Florida, and creating Nickelodeon Magazine, movie, toy and publishing divisions.

Under her leadership, Nickelodeon became the top-rated 24-hour cable programming service and won Emmy Awards, Peabody Awards, CableACE Awards and Parents' Choice Awards. The network had a 40% profit margin and explosive growth every year.

Laybourne built Nickelodeon into the first global television network to profit from selling advertising targeted towards children. Her programming approach, which made a point of talking to children as equals, built the tiny cable network, which had only five employees in 1980, into an $8 billion business.

Laybourne left Nickelodeon in 1996 to become president of Disney-ABC Cable Networks, guiding the growth and overseeing the programming of the Disney Channel and represented the corporate interests in Lifetime, A&E, E!, and The History Channel.

Up until her departure in 1996, Nickelodeon Magazine featured regular interviews with her under the heading Ask the Boss Lady.

In 1998, Laybourne left Disney and partnered with Oprah Winfrey and Carsey-Werner Productions to create Oxygen Media, a cable TV company dedicated to creating television and Internet programming for women. She also purchased three women-oriented online services from her former MTV boss, Robert W. Pittman.

Laybourne started the mentoring program, Global Women's Mentoring Walks, which pairs established and emerging women professionals to engage in mentoring partnerships in communities across the globe.

"It's an honor to welcome this distinguished group of individuals into the Hall of Fame and to acknowledge their remarkable contributions, which continue to shape our industry."

The 2020 honorees join more than 146 individuals previously inducted into the Hall of Fame since its inception in 1984. The coveted honor has been bestowed upon performers, directors, producers, costume designers, writers, animators, executives, news reporters, and various other individuals whose work in television has no equal.

"These exceptional individuals have been major forces in television's evolution," said Rick Rosen, Hall of Fame Selection Committee chair. "It is our pleasure to honor them and celebrate their influence and impact on the growth of our industry across six decades of unprecedented change."

This year's committee includes Rick Rosen, head of television for William Morris Endeavor; Marcy Carsey, Emmy Award-winning producer; Bonnie Hammer, chairman, NBCUniversal Content Studios; Peter Roth, president, Warner Bros. Television; Fred Silverman, founder of the Fred Silverman Company and former executive at ABC, CBS and NBC; and Nina Tassler, partner PatMa Productions.

Kerry Washington Calls Bob Iger "Ultimate Disney Princess" as Disney Boss Urges Inclusive Hiring

The Disney chairman and CEO shared a stage with fellow TV Academy Hall of Fame inductees Cicely Tyson, Seth MacFarlane and Nickelodeon and Oxygen trailblazer Geraldine Laybourne.


Anne Sweeney, right, helped induct her friend and mentor Geraldine Laybourne, creator of Nickelodeon and co-founder Oxygen Media. Sweeney joked that she has the distinction of being "the worst assistant Geraldine Laybourne ever had." But Laybourne kept promoting her despite her administrative skills, thus beginning a lasting friendship, partnership and mentorship situation that has continued.

Kerry Washington positioned herself at the podium inside the TV Academy’s Saban Media Center just after 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night and admitted the task she had in front of her was a "daunting" one — to present a tribute for the Hall of Fame ceremony’s first of five inductees, Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger.

"How in the space of five minutes do you summarize one of the most brilliant, prolific innovative disruptors in the history of television? Bob Iger is a visionary leader of almost mythic proportions. The man is a legend. His rise through the ranks is storied, his accomplishments are the stuff of legend. If there wasn't already a TV Hall of Fame, we have to invent one in order to induct Bob," said Washington, who then went on to track his rise through the Disney ranks and his many industry-shaking acquisitions — everything from ABC to ESPN and Pixar to 20th Century Fox.

Then came something in her speech that did seem truly daunting if not Herculean — Washington compared one of the industry’s most respected executives and most powerful men to ... a Disney princess?

"I know this may be controversial, but when you really think about it, Bob is kind of like the ultimate Disney princess. I don't want you to panic, I want you to hear me out," she explained, as audience members giggled and shuffled in their seats. "He began his career sweeping ashes out of the oven at Pizza Hut. If that is not a modern-day Cinderella, I don't know what is. Then eventually, just like Cinderella, things changed when he befriended a mouse. He set out to change his fate. Like Moana, he went beyond the reef. Like Tiana, he kissed a few frogs, professionally speaking, I mean. Not every new TV show is going to be Grey's Anatomy, but that's the cost of being bold — and it was worth it."

She also praised him for the bold move of putting a show — her show, Scandal — on ABC with a black woman as the lead of a network drama. "None of the other networks were doing it. No one had done it in almost 40 years but Bob and the team of leadership that he had empowered, many of them women and women of color — Anne Sweeney, Channing Dungey, Betsy Beers, Shonda Rhimes — they never wavered. Bob helped to create a culture in television, where we take risks, where we can be creative and innovative and step into our own greatness because he stepped into his."

She continued: "You see, like a true Disney princess, Bob doesn't choose the easy path. He follows the ones with thorns and traps, turbulence and waves because he wants what so many of us want: to tell good stories to tell them well, and to touch as many hearts as he can. … As a leader, he's made it possible for others to become the heroes of their own stories. Without him, I'm not sure that I ever would have learned to be the hero of my own story, both on screen and off. Thank you, Bob, for giving me dreams to dream and then making them come true."

Washington then welcomed Iger to the stage as the crowd of several hundred TV insiders responded with the night’s first standing ovation during a ceremony that also inducted acting legend Cicely Tyson, mogul Seth MacFarlane, TV director Jay Sandrich (absent due to illness; wife Linda accepted on his behalf), and Nickelodeon and Oxygen trailblazer Geraldine Laybourne. Iger saluted them all at the top of his remarks before thanking his many Disney bosses and those who paved the way for his success. He then turned his attention to the present.

"Now all of us Hall of Famers have certainly witnessed more profound and more incredible change — in fact, the complete rapid transformation of our industry, one I don't think any of us could have ever imagined. But as daunting as that all is, it's consistent with the sweeping changes that the world has seen. In a world that has swirled with change, I think it needs all of us more than ever because of anxiety and uncertainty and contempt seem to dominate the headlines and people's lives," Iger said. "And with that in mind and given televisions omnipresence in the world and the ability to reach billions of people every day, I believe we have more than just an opportunity — we have a responsibility to serve the vital needs of people and to make a profoundly positive difference in the world because the story we tell can provide a much needed escape and they also help people relate to one another, gain a deeper understanding, different perspectives and create a sense of connection and hopefully a sense of optimism, which is something that we at the Walt Disney company strive for every day.

Iger said that can be achieved through the telling of positive stories "that promote strong values, add inspiring role models, but by also being truth tellers."

Iger then closed his speech with a call to action that he said "should be" the number one priority: "Making sure that more women, minorities and other underrepresented groups have the opportunity to tell their stories both on screen and behind the camera so that they may play a bigger role and contribute even more meaningful ways to the quality and the resonance of the content that we create."

That spirit of inclusivity and opportunity was reflected in speeches by Laybourne (who broke boundaries by presenting content with girls at the center during her days at Nickelodeon) and by Tyson, who was brought the stage by Shonda Rhimes. Her boss at How to Get Away With Murder called her a "trailblazer of the highest order," someone who put personal integrity ahead of Hollywood success by refusing any character that "would degrade not only herself as an actress, but as she says, she also refused any character that would degrade women of color in general, because that could revert verbally into future generations."

In accepting, Tyson joked that she wasn’t sure of whom Rhimes was speaking. She also got laughs when she said that, at age 95, she sometimes looks in the mirror and asks herself, "Cicely, do you believe it?"

Someone who also got the crowd laughing was MacFarlane. "This is, this is easily the second-best thing that has happened to me this month," he quipped before adding, "Anytime I get to come out to North Hollywood, it is a treat. I got ripped off buying my first car here. It is truly an honor to be recognized by the television Hall of Fame alongside so many TV legends and Les Moonves."

The crowd responded to the jab at the disgraced CBS boss with groans to which MacFarlane responded, "Don’t look at me, man. You put him there." MacFarlane also made a joke that involved another honoree — Mr. Iger whose company bought Fox, home of many of MacFarlane’s creations, including Family Guy.

"I'm receiving this at a time when I've, I've passed another career milestone. Walt Disney's Family Guy has been on … Hey, Bob, I'm towing the fucking company line … has been on television for two decades."

In closing, MacFarlane credited his work ethic to one simple personal mandate.

"Comedy is all about the analysis of imperfection, and here, in a Twitter-ruled society where there is less and less tolerance for imperfection, one hopes that comedy still has a long future. I like to think it does. Ralph Kramden, Fred Flintstone, Archie Bunker, Henry Higgins, these were all characters that fascinated me because they were deeply, deeply imperfect and as a result, never boring," said MacFarlane, who was honored by Don Mischer. The legendary live TV producer called MacFarlane "one of the most prolific, multi-talented creative individuals" that he’s ever worked with. "I tried hard to continue that tradition. From Peter Griffin to Stan Smith to Ted to the crew on The Orville, these are all imperfect people doing imperfect things but they're all constantly trying to do better. That’s really my only motive as I go from project to project. I'm just trying to do better than I did last time. It really doesn't go too much deeper than that."

If you’re in the market for a new set of wheels, you can’t miss the 2020 Buffalo Auto Show. You’ll see the latest and greatest vehicles at this show. Picture the ideal side-by-side comparison experience. This is it!

The 2020 Buffalo Auto Show is presented by Exxpress Tire Delivery. This year’s show will run from Thursday, Feb. 6, through Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, 153 Franklin St., Buffalo. This family-friendly event is fun for all ages. When Willy, Quincy and Alissa are assigned a group project in Science class, Willy’s worst subject, Willy knows his mom’s the one to help. Her organic lunches alone could be classified a topic of scientific study! Unfortunately, by the time the kids make it home from school, Crystal’s on a surprise road trip to Vegas with a friend, and Rock’s planning the party of the century. When Skunk falls ill, Willy manages to convince his dad to step up to the dirty plates, helping his father make sense of the mysterious piles of clothes on his floor, and the whereabouts of all the missing food in the fridge! Now if only Willy could stop his dad from accidentally sabotaging every one of his science projects as he attempts to take care of the house.

When the new Mr. Mom tries to help out a little too much, landing the kids in hot lava with their science project at school, Rock learns that sometimes less is more. Meanwhile, a homesick Crystal learns that while Vegas is fun, there’s no place like home -- and everyone at home learns there’s no mom like Crystal.

Following the recent success of America’s Most Musical Family, it seems that Nickelodeon has another competition project in the pipeline!


Over the past few days, talented dancers and sports enthusiasts have been uploading their Nickelodeon audition tapes to Vimeo, showcasing their dance skills. A new audition tape from Rocket Power megafan Brittany Joyal, who credits the popular '90s Nicktoon for inspiring her to get into skating and surfing, has revealed that the project the auditions are for could be Dare To Dance!

Not much more information about the project, including whether it'll be a series or a one-off special, and whether it'll be long-form for TV or short-form for digital platforms - is currently available. Dare To Dance could also be the project's current working title, and could change by the time the show airs.

Dare To Dance will form part of Nickelodeon's new slate of programming that focuses on co-viewing amongst kids and parents, which has included the reimagined Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, musical reality competition series America's Most Musical Family, the revival of the network's iconic All That sketch series, and the new British family game show The Crystal Maze.

Rob Bagshaw Talks About How Nickelodeon Plans to Retain Viewers by Branching Out Into Non-Scripted Programming

NEW ORLEANS – To date there are more than 300 Over-the-Top (OTT) services fighting for viewership, with services such as ViacomCBS' CBS All Access, Amazon and Netflix as well as the much-hyped offerings from HBO Max and BBC-Discovery still to launch. Suffice it to say that the American streaming marketplace is becoming crowded.


Perhaps taken for granted in this maelstrom of industry activity is linear cable television, where pay-TV providers in the U.S. still account for 84.8 million subscribers, as of December 2019. So how is cable keeping its edge and fighting back to ensure its content is as compelling as anything on Amazon or Netflix?

Those were the questions that a group of top-level industry executives were looking to answer during a Wednesday (Jan. 29) panel discussion, titled “Linear: Alive and Well” and moderated by Bruce David Klein, president and executive producer at Atlas Media Corp, at the 2020 Realscreen Summit in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Over the past year, Nickelodeon, a division of ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks has been working tirelessly to ratchet up its non-scripted entertainment offering in the hopes of retaining its young viewers. While unscripted programming is relatively new at the network, Nickelodeon’s Rob Bagshaw, Executive Vice President (EVP) of unscripted content, noted that the network has seen successes in the past with game show Double Dare, which was recently revived, and is now doubling down on its production in non-scripted entertainment with hidden camera prank show The Substitute, shiny floor format America’s Most Musical Family, competition series Top Elf and an Americanized version of UK game show The Crystal Maze already on offer.

“Children are still coming to us as the bedrock of where they start to watch television… our key demo is 6-11, and we’re trying to build that by broadening out into co-viewing,” said Bagshaw.

“My challenge is to grow a genre within a network and across our other platforms so that our audience is aware they can get that content that they’re watching elsewhere, and the best way of doing that is to [offer] variety,” he continued.

The panel also featured Howard Swartz, SVP of production and development at Discovery Channel and Lauren Gellert, EVP of development and original programming at WE tv, who discussed what their respective networks were doing to keep viewers tuning in. Nickelodeon to Roll-Out Eco-Friendly La Bala Consumer Product Line

When it comes to going green, consumer products have led the movement in the kids industry. Toy companies got the ball rolling early on being more environmentally friendly, with major players like Hasbro announcing initiatives as early as 2010.


Musical instruments could be a category Nickelodeon explores for its La Bala CP program.

And while those first programs focused on reducing the amount of paper and plastic used in packaging, more recently licensees and manufacturers are turning their attention to baking in an eco-friendly ethos into the very DNA of their brands.

Nickelodeon is taking this tack with its consumer products strategy for Isabella de La Torre (known as La Bala), the YouTube star Nickelodeon Latin America signed an exclusive global representation agreement in 2019. Under this agreement, Nickelodeon will work with La Bala to develop her musical career and propel her career internationally on multiple platforms, including consumer products, music, short-and-long form original productions, social networks, live events and editorial, among others. Nickelodeon Latin America is working on a comprehensive strategy for the talented influencer, including multiple merchandising agreements with promotional partners covering various categories such as fashion, accessories and much more.

Cristian Cabero, Nickelodeon Latin America's Senior Vice President (SVP) of Consumer Products and Location Based Experiences (LBE), revealed to Kidscreen his team took inspiration from the ways in which de La Torre works green products into her everyday life when they began developing the CP range.

For example, she travels with a reusable cup to avoid single-use plastics, so Nickelodeon is aiming to create products that are similarly sustainable, as well as reducing the amount of packaging used for the entire line. These efforts aren’t designed to stand out—being eco-friendly should now be assumed and something La Torre’s fans expect from their purchases.

In fact, a 2018 study from research firm GreenMatch found that 72% of Gen Z consumers would spend more money on a service if it was sustainably produced, and those same respondents also reported a strong preference for switching to brands with sustainable initiatives. The study also found kids are willing to boycott companies that do not align with their values. And these stats came before millions of people (Gen Zers among them) protested for climate change solutions in September last year. What’s more, a 2019 report from Research and Markets found kids have a direct spending power of as much as US$143 billion, and an indirect spending power of US$600 billion. That’s a lot of reasons to go green.

Initial categories for La Bala’s consumer products program will include apparel, accessories, publishing and back-to-school, with the first items scheduled to hit shelves in Mexico this summer. By the end of the year, Nickelodeon plans to expand throughout LatAm and launch additional categories like bedding and electronic accessories.

De La Torre first learned about environmental issues and sustainability through social media, she says. “It’s unbelievable how many things are happening because of climate change, and people think it’s normal. We have to work now, and I’ve been using my voice to spread awareness.”

But de La Torre’s entire life doesn’t revolve around environmental efforts. She’s like most teenagers, which means her time is split between a number of interests.

“There are a lot of things she’s passionate about,” says Tatiana Rodriguez, Nickelodeon’s Senior Vice President (SVP) of Programming and Creative Strategy. “She also loves music and art, so we’re working to incorporate all of those things into the products [with equal importance.]”

The biggest obstacle, Cabera says, is waiting for the technology behind manufacturing processes to catch up to the company’s (and de La Torre’s) aspirations. “There are limitations,” he says. “We must deliver a good-quality product at a price that is accessible to the consumer.”

Nickelodeon is also looking at sustainable clothing, which saw the network partner with Trashcode in 2018 and, most recently, partner with JNR Nation in Australia to launch an eco-friendly clothing line inspired by Nickelodeon star JoJo Siwa.

Then, in “Billy the Bug”, Fire Chief McCloud accidentally buys a malfunctioning Twirly Hat for her nephew.

Зрители определили лучших в рамках премии «Большая Цифра 2020»

Жюри национальной премии «Большая цифра», призванной популяризировать новые телевизионные технологии, услуги и контент, подвело итоги зрительского голосования, в ходе которого определялись лучшие тематические цифровые каналы и онлайн кинотеатры.

Напряженная борьба продолжалась до самой полуночи 17 декабря - заключительного дня зрительского голосования - и предугадать его результаты было очень сложно. В итоге победителями в номинации тематических каналов стали: телеканал «Победа» (лучший документально-познавательный канал), «Е ТВ» (лучший спортивный канал), «Музыка Первого» (лучший музыкальный канал), «Дорама» (лучший канал телесериалов), «Дом кино» (лучший канал кинофильмов), Nickelodeon (лучший детский канал), «Авто плюс» (лучший развлекательный канал), «Поехали!» (лучший канал по интересам, путешествия), «Кухня ТВ» (лучший канал по интересам, кулинария).

Награда «Лучший онлайн-кинотеатр по мнению зрителей» досталась онлайн-кинотеатру ivi.

Помимо зрительского голосования профессиональное жюри определит сильнейших среди мультисервисных операторов, производителей и разработчиков оборудования и ПО, российских и иностранных телеканалов, онлайн-сервисов и OTT платформ. Возглавляет жюри Анатолий Григорьевич Лысенко, президент Международной Академии Телевидения и Радио, генеральный директор Общественного Телевидения России.

Вручение призов состоится во время торжественного награждения победителей Премии «Большая цифра» 29 января 2020 года в рамках выставки-форума CSTB. Telecom & Media’2020. Прямая трансляция церемонии пройдет на сайте премии «Большая Цифра».

Премия вручается российским и иностранным телеканалам, вещающим в сетях многоканального цифрового телевидения на русском языке на территории России и стран СНГ; федеральным и региональным операторам, производителям и разработчикам оборудования и ПО, операторам мультисервисных сетей, онлайн видеосервисам для конечных пользователей.
