BURBANK, Calif.—Oct. 2, 2019—Nickelodeon has set the premiere date for its brand-new music competition series, America’s Most Musical Family: Friday, Nov. 1, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT). 30 talented family bands performing in all genres take center stage in front of celebrity judges Grammy Award-winning global superstar Ciara, digital media sensation David Dobrik, pop icon and Broadway star Debbie Gibson and show host, singer and television personality Nick Lachey to compete for a recording contract with Republic Records and the chance to win a $250,000 cash prize in partnership with Capri Sun 100% Juice.

The premiere of America’s Most Musical Family will simulcast across BET, MTV, MTV2, Nicktoons, Paramount Network, TeenNick, TV Land and VH1 at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), with new episodes airing every Friday night on Nickelodeon.


America’s Most Musical Family kicks off with the following five family bands ready to battle it out with their very own take on hit songs: Nashville, Tennessee’s eight-member group The Rees Family (“Walking on Sunshine”); New Jersey’s band of brothers, Wanmor, whose father is Wanye from Boyz II Men (“It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday”); From Rancho Santa Margarita, California, harmonizing sisters and human beat box brother Juat Sibs (“Honeymoon Avenue”); Brother and sister duo Juna N Joey from West Palm Beach, Florida (“Beautiful Crazy”); and San Jacinto, California’s sibling quartet The Mitchells (“We Got the Beat”).

Nick Lachey, the host of America’s Most Musical Family, has revealed that Nickelodeon USA will premiere the network's brand-new musical competition series on Friday, November 1, 2019!

In an interview with FoodSided about his new partnership with Subway to encourage families to 'adopt' ugly vegetables, Lachey, the front-man of 98 Degrees, dished: "I’m excited about a new show, called America’s Most Musical Family that I’m hosting for Nickelodeon, which premiers November 1st, and I’m still preforming with 98 Degrees. We have a handful of shows still between now and the end of the year and other shows already lined up for next year. So I’m excited to be hopefully in a city near you soon."

Nickelodeon sets the stage with an all-star celebrity lineup for the network’s new music competition show, America’s Most Musical Family. Grammy Award-winning global superstar Ciara, who is an executive producer, digital media sensation David Dobrik and singer-songwriter, record producer and actress Debbie Gibson will serve as series judges alongside host Nick Lachey, as 30 talented families compete for a recording contract with Republic Records and a $250,000 cash prize.

America’s Most Musical Family was first announced in February as part of Nickelodeon’s biggest, most wide-ranging content slate ever. The 12-episode series filmed in Los Angeles during summer 2019 and is scheduled to premiere later this fall on Nickelodeon in the U.S. and YTV in Canada.

Nick & Disney’s non-fiction growth strategies

Looking to tap into co-viewing opportunities on traditional TV and streaming, the kidcos are stacking their slates with family-friendly unscripted content.

Let’s get real. It’s no secret that SVOD services, especially Netflix, continue to lure young audiences away from the big three kids cable broadcasters. In 2018, Disney XD, Nickelodeon and CN’s average combined ratings dropped 29%, according to analyst Nielsen.

Nick and Disney, in particular, remain invested in what they do best—animated comedies and live-action sitcoms and movies. But as of late, both kidsnets are also diversifying into original unscripted content.

The genre, which includes reality TV, competition, game show and documentary formats, has been a bright spot for television over the last decade, while other categories have diminished. According to Nielsen, between 2011 and 2018 the combined viewing share of syndicated TV series, movies and kids programming fell to 36%, from 52%, among viewers ages two and up. Unscripted content, however, rose to 32% last year (from 24% in 2011).

Kids have played a big role in the success of the genre because they latch onto the same primetime shows their parents watch. Now, nearly every successful reality competition TV format for the coveted 18-to-49 demographic has a pint-sized version for children. Shows like Fox’s MasterChef Junior, Food Network’s Kids Baking Championship and ITV’s The Voice Kids have all spawned multiple seasons since launching and are bolstering the overall presence of the brands.

While Nickelodeon had success with unscripted content in the past with ’80s and ’90s competition game shows like Double Dare and Legends of the Hidden Temple (both of which have been revived), its strategy shifted away from non-fiction as animation became more popular worldwide, says Rob Bagshaw, EVP of unscripted content.

But when Brian Robbins took over as president at the end of 2018, he saw the wave of young viewers tuning in to popular unscripted formats for wide audiences and wanted to renew Nick’s investment in the genre, Bagshaw says.

To fully optimize its non-fiction ambitions with cost-efficient reboots that can be made quickly—as well as original content featuring more tweens and diverse families—Nick launched its first official unscripted division in January under the leadership of Bagshaw. A former Bunim/Murray Productions exec, Bagshaw heads up the development and production of unscripted content across all Nick formats and platforms—including reality competition shows and marquee live events like the Kids’ Choice and Sports Awards. He previously worked on unscripted hits including RuPaul’s Drag Race, Top Chef Masters and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge.

In June, the burgeoning division hired another Bunim/Murray alum, Paul Medford. As VP of current series, Medford is in charge of Nick’s current slate of live-action unscripted shows, including America’s Most Musical Family, The Substitute and Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader. Rounding out the development team is VP of live-action development Mandel Ilagan, and senior director of development Stacey Carr, who recently joined from Endemol Shine. Bagshaw says additional staff will be hired as more shows are greenlit. The unit’s slate consists of about a dozen greenlit, pre-production or production projects.

For its adaptation of Fox hit Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, Bagshaw says it was important to appeal to the widest audience possible, which led to the casting of WWE star John Cena as the show’s host.

“John Cena has huge co-viewing potential,” says Bagshaw. “But to make the show appropriate for Nick, we show him in a new light as a comedian, and pivoted the format to focus on the fifth graders, rather than the adult contestants.”

So far, the strategy is paying off. The revival’s June 10 premiere delivered double-digit increases in viewership with kids (21%) and adults (34%) over the prior four-week time slot averages, according to Nielsen.

As new shows roll out, the division is taking internal and external pitches for concepts that could live on any platform, and is seeking new production partners to collaborate with.

“In researching what our audience is watching and what they want to see, there are three key areas that resonate with our demo: comedy, music and competition,” says Bagshaw.

Nick is also looking for opportunities to develop more factual-driven, long-form stories—including, potentially, hour-long content for YouTube or other digital platforms—but Bagshaw says more development time is required to find the right projects. It also plans to develop factual linear content for 2020 similar to one of the kidsnet’s longest-running series, Nick News, which aired from 1992 to 2015—though no timeline for delivery has been set yet.

“Nick News allowed for serious conversations about pop culture or newsworthy moments. Our audience today is smarter and more aware than ever—we would be doing them a disservice if we didn’t provide opportunities to have those conversations,” says Bagshaw.

Disney, meanwhile, recently named former Marvel, ABC and ESPN Films exec Dan Silver as VP of original unscripted content for Disney+ in the lead up to the SVOD’s November 12 launch.

Unscripted shows headed to the service include Disneynature feature film Dolphin Reef; six x half-hour guide dog show Pick of the Litter; student competition series Shop Class; aspirational program Marvel’s Hero Project; global scavenger hunt series The Maze; and the high school musical-themed Encore.

For its real-world stories, the House of Mouse is looking for inspirational, aspirational, heroic, grounded and feel-good narratives that embody not only Disney, but also its sub-brands, including Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm and Nat Geo.

As for Disney’s take on formatted competition series, Silver says there is value in them and the sub-genre is healthy, but the company is mindful about how they are produced.

“Sometimes competition can be leveraged for what I would call ‘fabricated drama,’” says Silver. “In non-fiction programming, there’s a tendency to have the issue lead [the plot], and then the narrative and the characters inform the issue. For us, the people we follow lead [the story], and if there are issues that are contained within the narratives, they inform the character. If you know the people, you’re going to care about whatever they’re going through.”

Some Disney+ unscripted shows are also taking a slightly more niche-driven approach to how they target their audiences.

For example, Encore is made for adults because it brings together former castmates of a high school musical and tasks them with recreating their original performance during a reunion. The series will be available for the November 12 launch and is executive produced by Frozen actress Kristen Bell.

“Encore is a proper adult show. But it’s about adults going back to high school. If you’re nine, 15 or 18 and love theater, you’re going to watch the show, too,” says Silver.

According to children’s media consultant Rick Clodfelter, kids want genuine, heartfelt, diverse and relatable content that entertains, which is why many unscripted series and formats for all ages are resonating across platforms. In short, they want to see real people.

“There is unfortunately a lot of turmoil in the world, so inclusive unscripted content is more important than ever,” he says.
The co-viewing opportunity is also going to be a big driver for the genre. According to media and consumer analyst GfK MRI, co-viewing is on the rise, and opportunities exist for both streaming and linear platforms. Its latest research found that 49% of US adults say they are co-viewing more now than they did three years ago, and parents are more likely to be watching with their kids.

As for the type of content adults watch with their children, kids television was the number-one response for co-viewing ahead of movies.

And as more young parents shift to streaming services (the report found that 72% of 18- to 34-year-olds used SVODs as their co-viewing medium of choice), streamers are rushing to fill their video consumption needs at a much quicker pace.

Clodfelter notes that family-friendly, live-action unscripted shows are quicker to make compared to animation. “The turnaround is faster, and they tend to be a little more cost-efficient, so there’s a big financial benefit as well,” he says.

Looking forward, Clodfelter sees bigger unscripted opportunities in the preschool space, pointing to the success of Nickelodeon series Ryan’s Mystery Playdate.

Created and produced by digital media company Pocket.watch, the live-action/animated preschool show stars seven-year-old YouTube star Ryan and his family as they attempt physical challenges and unboxing puzzles to reveal celebrity playdates.

The April premiere drew 5.5 million viewers and was tops among kids ages two to 11 in its 12:30 p.m. time slot across all TV, according to Nickelodeon.

“YouTube caters to what kids want to see in the moment, but how do you take what’s precious about that short-form content and flip it into an 11-minute show?” asks Clodfelter.

“Ryan’s Mystery Playdate manages to honor the original, and extend it to a very different long-form series.”

But even with the demand for more content and influencer opportunities in the unscripted and scripted space, challenges remain—especially for traditional TV channels that target the whole family.

For example, Nielsen reported Universal Kids and Discovery Family saw respective ratings declines of 73% and 46% in 2018. In June, NBCU-owned Universal Kids halted production on originals altogether. It’s not known if any of the net’s previously commissioned unscripted shows, including Top Chef Junior and American Ninja Warrior Junior, will have the option of new seasons after they air as scheduled.

These concerns aren’t enough to deter the growing non-fiction movement, however.

At Nickelodeon, Bagshaw sees the expansion into unscripted shows that kids and families can enjoy together as a big plus for the long-term sustainability of the network.

“One of the reasons we’re focused on co-viewing is so we can keep our audience,” he says. “If our unscripted division has the same success that Nickelodeon has had with its big animation titles, then our audience will stay with us for a long time.”

'Henry Danger The Musical' to Make "Note"-Worthy Debut on Nickelodeon Latin America and Nick Brazil on Saturday 19th October 2019

Kid Danger (Jace Norman) and Captain Man (Cooper Barnes) will face their biggest challenge ever in Nickelodeon’s hour-long episode, Henry Danger The Musical, premiering Saturday 19th October 2019 on Nickelodeon Latin America (Latinoamérica) and Nickelodeon Brazil (Brasil)!


The special, which features 26 original Broadway-style songs, marks the return of the villainous Frankini (Frankie Grande) who puts a musical curse over the town of Swellview, while Kid Danger and Captain Man are forced to find a way to stop him.

Henry Danger The Musical will air at 19:00 on Nickelodeon México and at 18:00 on Nickelodeon Brasil. Transmission times for Nickelodeon Argentina, Nickelodeon Colombia, Nickelodeon Venezuela and Nickelodeon Chile will be announced shortly.

In the special, Henry Hart awakens one morning to alarming news—that persistent pest Frankini has placed a musical curse over Swellview. The entire town quickly tires of being forced to sing a variety of musical numbers and to even dance like they are in a chorus line. When Captain Man and Kid Danger discover that they cannot punch and kick their way out of this problem, they are forced to bring in an unlikely ally to help them fight Frankini on his own turf--by taking him on in an epic, live-streamed sing battle to end the curse once and for all.

Nickelodeon’s Henry Danger is basic cable’s number-one show in the U.S. with K2-11 and K6-11 (through 6/23/19). Henry Danger follows the adventures of Henry Hart (Jace Norman) who gets selected by superhero Captain Man (Cooper Barnes) to be his apprentice. The series also stars Riele Downs as “Charlotte Page,” Sean Ryan Fox as “Jasper Dunlop,” Ella Anderson as “Piper Hart,” Michael D. Cohen as “Schwoz Schwartz,” and Jeffrey Nicholas Brown as “Jake Hart.”

The Henry Danger The Musical album, featuring 16 original songs from the episode, is available for purchase on iTunes, and streaming on Spotify Apple Music and more. The album is distributed by AWAL/Kobalt.

Henry Danger The Musical is written by Samantha Martin, who also serves as co-producer. Christopher J. Nowak serves as showrunner and executive producer. Jake Farrow is executive producer. Henry Danger is created by Dan Schneider and Dana Olsen.

The special made it's world premiere on Nickelodeon USA on Saturday, July 27, 2019, and is currently rolling out onto Nickelodeon channels globally.

20 Surprising Secrets About The Amanda Show Revealed

Amanda, please!

It might be hard to believe but The Amanda Show is 20 years old, with the All That spinoff centering on Amanda Bynes, serving as Nickelodeon's version of Carol Burnett, after she became one of the kids sketch series' breakout stars. And just like her obsessed-fan alter-ego Penelope Taynt, we all couldn't get enough of Amanda's comedy chops.

While The Amanda Show ran for just three seasons, premiering on October 16, 1999 and abruptly ending in September 2002, its hilarious characters (Jude Trudy! Moody! Crazy Courtney!) and memes have kept its memory alive and well. Plus, The Amanda Show, which was created by Dan Schneider (who would go on to create Zoey 101 and iCarly), gifted the world with one of TV's most beloved childrens' sitcoms: Drake & Josh, as Drake Bell and Josh Peck actually met and became best friends on the set and the idea for their own show came from a very specific sketch.

So bring out the dancing lobsters as we reveal some fun facts you might not know about The Amanda Show...

1. After joining the cast of All That in its third season, becoming one of its youngest stars as she was just 10 years old when she made her debut after being a huge fan of the show, telling Paper Magazine, "It was a dream come true. It was unbelievable for me. But it quickly became clear she was a breakout star, with the network giving her her own show after three seasons on All That.

2. The original cast of The Amanda Show was Amanda as the host and star, Drake Bell, then 11, Nancy Sullivan, Raquel Lee and Johnny Kassir, though Raquel and Johnny would not return for the second season, with Josh Peck joining the cast.

3. Because of her work on All That, Drake was a bit star-struck when he first met Amanda, telling CBS, "I was a huge fan of Amanda...she was a huge star to me. I loved All That and I was already an admirer of her talent. Everything came so naturally to her. There was never a time when she was really off her game. Everything was so effortless."

4. However, there was one cast member Drake admitted to not being fond of at first: Josh Peck, as he revealed on the Speech Bubble podcast, "the time we met, we did not click at all. We didn't click." So when Drake say Josh was joining the cast, his reaction was less than enthusiastic. "I'm like, whoa, I'm the only guy in the cast...'No, not Josh Peck!' But the two quickly bonded over their love of classic comedies and comedians and became best friends.

5. To help introduce the new spinoff, All That cast members Josh Server and Kenan Thompson made an appearance in the premiere episode, delivering flowers and a pizza to Amanda to wish her luck.

7. Celebs who appeared on the series included Ashley Tisdale (playing a Cold Curer in three episodes), Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam, Shiri Appleby (as a nerd), Kathie Lee Gifford, and The O.C.'s Adam Brody as Greg Brady.

8. The Amanda Show was Taran's first acting job out of school, with the SNL vet appearing in one of the show's most beloved recurring sketches, Moody's Point, a parody of teen dramas like Dawson's Creek. Moody's mom in the sketch was played by The Brady Bunch star Maureen McCormick.

9. Moody's Point was pitched to Nickelodeon to be its own spinoff, which would've heavily featured Taran's character Spaulding, but the network decided not to pick it up.

"It would have been similar to Zoey 101, but with much more bizarre, absurd, random comedy," Schneider one revealed. "In fact, if you think about it, the whole Zoey-Chase relationship was a lot like the Moody-Spaulding relationship."

10. The last outing of Moody's actually ending on a cliffhanger, with not even Schneider knowing how it would all play out. "That's why we'll never know who the real Moody was. Even I don't know...because I never had the opportunity to sit down and write it," he said of the unexpected cancellation.

11. One of the series' most enduring bits (and memes) are the dancing lobsters that would come in at the end of every Judge Trudy (a play on Judge Judy) skit, with Trudy (Amanda) proclaiming, "Court dismissed, bring in the dancing lobsters!" Lobster No. 2? Josh!

12. Though they were barely in their teens, the young actors often improvised a lot of their lines and characters while filming a sketch, with Drake revealing in a YouTube video, "Sometimes they wouldn't give us a character, here's your wardrobe and here's the wig you're wearing and then you'd just have to do something."

13. The Amanda Show launched an even more popular spinoff one year after it went off the air: Drake & Josh, which starred Drake and Josh as polar-opposite stepbrothers. Shenanigans obviously ensue. It became one of Nickelodeon's most successful sitcoms of all-time, that also launched another hit spinoff with star Miranda Cosgrove, iCarly.

14. The spinoff came to fruition thanks a sketch during The Amanda Show, with Drake explaining, "There was an episode one day where we were fighting over a shrimp and all it said in the script was 'Drake and Josh fighting over a shrimp.' You know, there was no dialogue or anything. And then we fought over a shrimp and it was really funny and the executive producers were like, 'Oh man, that's a show right there just these two guys.'" Years later, is how Drake & Josh would end its run, with the two fighting over shrimp. Full-circle.

15. A season two episode that first premiered in March 2001 was pulled from the air and hasn't aired since because it featured a sketch about a family called The Lucklesses who deal with persistent bad luck before their home is ultimately hit by a meteor and destroyed. After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the network decided the sketch was too violent to ever re-air.

16. While they've lost touch over the years, Drake has nothing but kind things to say about Amanda, saying on The Zach Sang Show that the first thing that pops into his mind when he thinks of her is "Carol Burnett. Unbelievable talent and funny as well…way beyond her years, like lightning in a bottle. When we started working together we were 12, 13 years old and the girl was running circles around the adults…she's unbelievable."

17. Amanda won the Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards "Favorite TV Actress" for all three seasons of The Amanda Show.

18. Josh revealed in a YouTube video that one of his favorite sketches from the show was a faux-commercial for "Snap, Krackle, Kaboom," an exploding cereal, that aired in a season three episode. One of the major reasons he loves it? Drake hated the yellow turtleneck he had to wear in it, almost refusing to do the sketch at the time.

19. In 2016, Nickelodeon added The Amanda Show back to its lineup, with Keith Dawkins, [then] executive vice president of TeenNick and NickToons, saying he believes the show had withstood the test of time.

"People have kind of a short memory with history," he said, by way of Refinery29. "A woman being funny, leading content, and being like The Carol Burnett Show is not a new idea. We forget about it. Women can lead content. Women can lead the charge."

20. In March 2019, Drake revealed to E! News that he and Josh are reuniting for a new project, though they won't be reprising their iconic titular characters or any characters form their time on The Amanda Show (and despite their brief-but-very-public falling out over Josh not inviting Drake to his wedding in 2017.)

He's come up with some cool ideas. And, yeah, I can't really go into exactly what we're doing, but it's going to be really cool and exciting. I'm really excited to do it," Drake teased.

BURBANK, Calif.—Oct. 16, 2019—Nickelodeon has picked up an additional 13 episodes of ‘90s icon All That, bringing its first season total to 26 episodes. Also announced today, is new cast member Aria Brooks from Atlanta, Ga., who is joining the show’s talented and diverse cast of comedians. New episodes of All That air on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

All That is executive produced by Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live), Kel Mitchell (Game Shakers), Kevin Kay (All That, SpongeBob SquarePants, Lip Sync Battle, Lip Sync Battle Shorties, Yellowstone) and Jermaine Fowler (Superior Donuts, Sorry to Bother You). Kevin Kopelow & Heath Seifert (All That, Cousins For Life, Austin & Ally) also serve as executive producers.

Shot in front of a live studio audience, All That stars Ryan Alessi, Reece Caddell, Kate Godfrey, Gabrielle Nevaeh Green, Nathan Janak, Lex Lumpkin and Chinguun Sergelen, who have popularized new characters, impersonations of today’s celebrities and new original comedic sketches including “Cancelled with Nathan,” Bed, Bath & Beyoncé” and “Marie Kiddo.”

Update (10/14) - Nickelodeon has renewed the revival of the it's hit sketch comedy series All That for 13 more episodes, which will make up the second half of season 11!

Joining the cast will be Aria Brooks of Atlanta, Georgia (pictured above) for the second half of the 11th season. Brooks’ career is on the rise. She plays a younger version of Harriet Tubman in the upcoming film Harriet and will be featured in Netflix’s Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings anthology.

On his official Instagram, actor Bobo Chang (Victorious, La La Land) revealed that he "[can't] wait for @allthat to get back to filming in just a couple weeks! This show really is... Yep, #allthat 🤪," adding "[you] might even hear more of me in an upcoming episode, we'll see!"

However, when asked whether filming was for season two (season twelve overall), Chang replied: "not sure what they're calling it, but it's coming back!"

Chang appeared in the series premiere of All New All That earlier this summer, portraying "Apple Head" and "Adam Sandler".

Premiering in June 2019, the news comes as the freshman season of All New All That is completing its run, with the first eight of the 13 episodes in season one having now aired. New episodes continue Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. on Nickelodeon USA.

NEW YORK--It’s time to pull up the Thinking Chair and follow the paw prints as Blue and her crew return in Nickelodeon’s brand-new preschool series Blue’s Clues & You!, debuting Monday, Nov. 11, at 9 a.m. (ET/PT). Steve Burns (Steve) and Donovan Patton (Joe) will reprise their roles in the series premiere, “Meet Josh!,” and help new live-action host Josh (Joshua Dela Cruz) and the audience solve their first game of Blue’s Clues.

Blue’s Clues & You! will feature brand-new elements alongside refreshed iconic items from the original series, including:

  • New CG-animation for Blue and Magenta;
  • An updated Handy Dandy Notebook equipped with a new blue crayon and smartphone technology, allowing Josh and Blue to receive emails and video calls;
  • An all-new Handy Dandy Guitar;

To celebrate today's announcement, Nick Jr. released brand-new clip of the Blue's Clues reboot. As you can see above, this new clip follows Blue as the famous pup makes a request, but the new host Josh has trouble figuring out what's going on.

The clip begins with Josh telling fans he's unsure of what Blue wants with their snack, but he doesn't get too upset. He pulls out his handy dandy notebook which has gotten a big upgrade. Now, the book is part paper and part phone, so Josh takes a second to ring up some familiar faces.

First, Josh calls up Joe who is working at a present store. The pair talk for a moment before Steve is added to the call. The original host is working at the Blueprints Detective Agency where finding clues is what he does. As the pair all talk about Blue, Steve and Joe decide to chat with Blue directly, and they solve the mystery.

As it turns out, there is only one thing to do. Blue wants to play Blue's Clues, but the pair do one last thing before hanging up. Steve asks to talk to the viewers for a second, and he asks everyone to help Josh.

"Will you help my cousin Josh? Great because I can tell he's going to need a lot of help like I did," Steve says.

'Blue's Clues & You!' Brings Blue Back For New Adventures — EXCLUSIVE

Blue's Clues is back, in a slightly different — but nevertheless familiar — form on Nickelodeon. The revival, Blue's Clues & You!, exclusively debuts three episodes on the streaming service Vudu on Sept. 27 before it officially premieres on Nick on Nov. 11. Blue's Clues & You! brings Blue back for new adventures, along with some old friends and a new host, Joshua Dela Cruz. You can see them all in this exclusive clip [here on romper.com].

In many ways, the revived series is a lot like the original show. It follows a dog named Blue who leaves paw print-shaped clues on various objects to help her pal (owner? roommate?) Josh solve a puzzle. The level of audience interaction remains the same; there are gaps left in the dialogue so viewers can chime in and answer questions. The show still makes kids feel like they're part of what's going on. But there are a few technological updates, too.

This clip offers a glimpse at the new series, along with a hearty dose of nostalgia. In the episode "Playdate with Magenta," several fan favorite characters find themselves back on that beloved red couch. Blue's bestie Magenta is over for a visit, but when it comes time to take a photo together, several more friends pile into the frame. It doesn't look like Blue's Clues & You! has forgotten anyone.

The clip opens with Blue and Magenta bounding onto the couch while Josh walks by, with what looks like his Handy Dandy Notebook in his hands. Right away it's clear that the show is visually a little different, thanks to advances in animation since the original. But the vibe remains the same. Josh happily announces that it's picture time while Blue and Magenta act adorable in the background: they high-five their ears and tumble around just like the playful puppers they are.

Josh takes no notice of the explosion of cuteness behind him because he's focused on snapping a picture. To do that, he needs help from you, the viewer. He asks the viewer to hold his phone, which is when the update to the classic notebook becomes obvious. The notebook is no longer just a notebook, it also includes a handy dandy smartphone. Josh hands it over and the viewer brings it up to eye-level, so while you're watching it seems like you're looking right at the phone screen.

The pups are more than ready for their closeup, but when Josh tells them to move closer together, some other characters take the opportunity to jump into frame. Shovel and Pail arrive, with Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper joining soon after. The crew's all here! Josh excitedly gets them into position and encourages them to smile, at which point the viewer snaps the perfect shot. Then Josh asks Blue to take a picture of him with you, which she does using her ears. Unfortunately, you don't get to see how that one turned out.

The clip concludes with Blue using her ears to take a ton of selfies, because it's 2019 now and dogs know how to take selfies. Blue's Clues & You! has definitely been updated for a modern audience, but it seems to share its predecessor's fun spirit.

Blue's Clues & You! premieres on Nick on Nov. 11, with three episodes debuting early on Vudu on Sept. 27.

Why Nickelodeon’s new ‘Blue’s Clues’ may feel very, very familiar

It won’t take an expert detective to sniff out the similarities between Nickelodeon’s upcoming series “Blue’s Clues & You” and its source material, “Blue’s Clues.”

After comparing the first three episodes of “Blues Clues & You” — currently available on Vudu — to their original counterparts on Amazon Prime, The Times has concluded the forthcoming reboot of the popular children’s program will follow mysteries nearly identical to those of its namesake. Key differences, such as a fresh host and updated technology, will separate the old from the new.

“Blue’s Clues,” which ran on Nickelodeon from 1996 to 2007, followed Steve Burns and his dog, Blue (voiced by co-creator Traci Paige Johnson), as Steve deciphered the meaning behind Blue’s barks by tracking strategically placed paw prints — with assistance from the show’s young viewers.

Each episode adhered to the same easily digestible formula: The live-action host collects three clues — drawing a symbol for each in his handy-dandy notebook along the way — that add up to Blue’s message of the day. Once Blue’s owner and the audience find every hint, the host returns to his “thinking chair” to solve the puzzle. The learning program earned eight consecutive Emmy nominations for preschool children’s series between 1998 and 2005.

“Blue’s Clues & You” sees Johnson reprise her voice role as the title pup opposite newcomer Josh, played by Joshua Dela Cruz, who takes up Steve’s mission to hunt for Blue’s clues. In the pilot, Josh also benefits from additional guidance, courtesy of former “Blue’s Clues” hosts Steve and Joe (Donovan Patton), who replaced Burns’ character in 2002.


Though the series uses newly recorded voice performances, the scripts and animated movements remain largely unchanged, as each episode closely matches the corresponding original — with a few exceptions. Because the new show runs about two minutes shorter than “Blue’s Clues’” 25 minutes, certain sequences that aren’t crucial to the plot — such as Blue painting elephants or assembling doll outfits out of felt — have been cut, while others more integral to the story have been shortened.

Among the modern elements to be featured in the reboot are Broadway star Dela Cruz’s jazzy spins on classic “Blue’s Clues” tunes, advanced CG animation for Blue and her canine pal, Magenta, and a tricked-out take on the host’s trademark notebook, which now doubles as a smartphone. In the second episode of “Blue’s Clues & You,” “Playdate With Magenta,” Josh’s notebook/phone comes in handy as the final clue, hinting that Blue wants to take a photo with Magenta during her visit. In the original, “Magenta Comes Over,” the final clue is a camera from the pre-smartphone era. Similarly, instead of receiving handwritten letters in the mail like Steve, Josh simply opens emails from pen pals on his phone.

Familiar friends such as Tickety Tock, Slippery Soap, Shovel, Pail, Mr. Salt, Mrs. Pepper, Cinnamon, Paprika, Felt Friends, Sidetable Drawer and Mailbox will return to accompany Josh and Blue on their adventures, along with some small additions — two of whom make their debut in the third installment of “Blue’s Clues & You.” While the original episode “Blue’s News!” introduced Paprika as Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper’s new baby girl, the updated version, “Big News With Blue” reveals Paprika’s littlest siblings, twins Sage and Ginger.

Amid an industrywide influx of new franchise installments, there are no set rules for remakes or revivals, though “Blue’s Clues & You” sticks closer to its predecessor than other animated TV reboots. The Times compared writing credits and episode synopses on more than 30 animated remakes — nearly all geared toward children — to their respective originals and concluded that none hewed as tightly to their initial iteration as the first three chapters of “Blue’s Clues & You.”

“For me, it’s kind of an homage to what I did, coming back to exactly the ... format that I created, which, at the time — and still, now — is completely unique to television,” “Blue’s Clues” co-creator Todd Kessler, who is not involved in the production of “Blue’s Clues & You,” told The Times in a phone interview, referring to the episodes now streaming on Vudu.

A pioneer in interactive TV, the first “Blue’s Clues” engaged its preschool-age fans by breaking the fourth wall and inviting them to help solve Blue’s riddles. In 2019, “Blue’s Clues & You” will take the interactivity up a notch with play-along videos available on Noggin, Nickelodeon’s youth-facing educational subscription service.

“They made a couple minor changes,” Kessler said. “But, literally, you’ll see they follow the shots and the animation pretty much in a paint-by-numbers way.”

“With any property, there’s a need to refresh it,” he added. “Our budget for ‘Blue’s Clues’ was about one quarter of what the budget for other Nickelodeon shows was at the time. So now the animation and the backgrounds are much more robust than they were originally. ... And also, they have a host who’s from mixed cultures and will have a much easier time being identified with around the world.”

The network also offered its perspective on how the updated “Blue’s Clues” nods to the show’s earlier days.

“The new series is not a shot-for-shot remake. We have refreshed a number of the original scripts and added modern touches,” a representative for Nickelodeon, which declined to make the producers of the reboot available for comment, said in a statement to The Times. “There are similarities, including ‘Easter eggs’ for the fans, and there are instances where the scripts adhere closely to the original as well as having many new moments.”

Nickelodeon’s 1996 curriculum-driven interactive series Blue’s Clues followed an animated blue-spotted dog called Blue as she left a trail of clues/paw prints for the host and the viewers, to figure out her plans for the day.

Combining concepts from child development and early-childhood education with innovative animation and production techniques that helped viewers learn, the original incarnation became the highest-rated show for pre-schoolers on US commercial television.

Nickelodeon Films Pilot for 'The Wilde Bunch'

Earlier this year, Nickelodeon shot a pilot for a brand-new live-action series titled The Wilde Bunch!


Not much is known about The Wilde Bunch, however, the pilot of The Wilde Bunch was produced by Nickelodeon and Uptown Productions (Henry Danger, The Thundermans, Knight Squad, The Massively Mixed-Up Middle School Mystery, Haunted Hathaways), and was filmed on Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at a studio located in Los Angeles, California.

The official show description for The Wilde Bunch reads:

"The Wilde Family sure lives up to their name – being magical monsters, and all that. Ben and Allison each bring two children to the table, which makes for plenty of excitement in the household. Be it a little demon, werebear, Nosferatu or enchantress, the kids have plenty on their own plates as well. It doesn’t help that Ben’s ex-wife is an evil enchantress who believes their daughter Quinn might be the “Chosen One” who could bring on the end of the world."

Credits for The Wilde Bunch include:

Michael Franks (MUTT & Stuff, Bella and the Bulldogs, True Jackson, VP, Saturday Night Live) as Director of Photography; Eric Dean Seaton (All That, Cousins for Life, Knight Squad, School of Rock, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, Marvin Marvin, How To Rock, True Jackson, VP, Just Jordan, The Thundermans, Modern Family, No Good Nick, Black-ish, The Goldbergs, Mad About You, Supergirl, Grown-ish) as Director; and Valerie Azlynn (iCarly) as a series regular.

Eric Dean Seaton also filmed different pilots for three different projects for Nickelodeon: Bad Fairy (2012); Hopefuls (2016), which would of featured Michael Cimino (Annabelle Comes Home; photos below); and an untitled sketch show (2012).

The last update for the project seems to be on Thursday, December 20, 2018, which unfortunately means that's its unlikely Nickelodeon will order the project to series.

Filming Multi-Camera Sketch Comedy with Michael Franks | All That | Nickelodeon

On a recent episode of Go Creative Show, host Ben Concoli spoke to DP Michael Franks about shooting multi-camera sketch comedy, as well as Nickelodeon’s reboot of the network's iconic 90’s sketch comedy series, All That!


Michael shares stories from his early career at Saturday Night Live and how it prepared him for All That. He also shares insight on the grueling work schedule that is required when working on a weekly sketch comedy show, where you need to light over 70 sets in 5 weeks. Ben and Michael also discuss the challenge of lighting for multiple cameras.

Michael also shares what his preferred camera and lens packages are and what skills are required when working in multi-cam environments.

Stein spearheads the NBCUniversal women’s initiative, HERE SHE CAN, which has focused on respect, equity and opportunity for women at all stages of their career at NBCUniversal.

Dalana Brand

Dalana Brand is the vice president of people experience and head of inclusion and diversity at Twitter. Over the years, she has worked at some of the world’s foremost Fortune 500 companies where she led global teams to design and develop innovative compensation systems and reward solutions that equitably engage employees, create a fair and inclusive culture, and help advance the business strategy of the company.

She is currently a board member for Enterprise for Youth and also serves as an Ambassador in the inaugural cohort of the United States of Women, where she works within the community to convene and amplify voices in the movement for full gender equality.

Alicin Reidy Williamson

Alicin Reidy Williamson is senior vice president and chief inclusion officer at Endeavor, where she leads all diversity, equity and inclusion efforts across the company. Prior to joining Endeavor, she served as a SVP at MTV Networks and Viacom, where she created the company’s Corporate Responsibility and Public Affairs department and helped build the Office of Global Inclusion to increase company visibility in diverse communities and aid diversity recruitment efforts. Williamson has 20 years of experience as a media and communications executive, developing and executing public affairs campaigns and programs to foster diversity and employee engagement.

Jennifer Caserta

Jennifer Caserta serves as chief transformation and people officer at AMC Networks, where she is charged with driving transformation across the company to enable its long-term growth objectives.

Among her many accolades, Caserta has been named an Adweek “Person of the Moment,” a Fast Company “Who’s Next” leader and a multichannel News and WICT (Women in Cable Telecommunications) “Wonder Woman.” She is also a recipient of the NCTA Vanguard Award for Young Leadership.
