Producers Originally Wanted 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' (2012) to End After Four Seasons

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012), the first TMNT series spearheaded by Nickelodeon following Viacom acquiring the complete rights of the iconic franchise in 2009, is still a favorite among fans young and old. The series, the first 3D CG-animated TMNT series, ran for 124 episodes over five seasons, telling the crime-fighting exploits of the legendary Heroes in a Half Shell - Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo. However, Athena Portillo, who worked on the series, has revealed that producers had originally wanted to wrap the series after only four seasons!

Speaking during a roundtable interview, Portillo (Star Wars Resistance) revealed: "I used to work on [Nickelodeon's 2012 version of] Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. And we were planning to wrap it up at Season 4. And then [Nickelodeon was] like, 'No, no, you're getting Season 5.' We're like, 'No!" So we had to do these like Tales of the TMNT," he recalled. "We were [hoping] we don't have to keep going [on Resistance]. Because it's really nice to have the opportunity to say this is the story to tell."

Season five of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ended up being an anthology series entitled Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which followed the Turtles through a variety of action-packed and bizarre adventures that have never been seen before, capturing seven distinct stories from the hero brothers’ past and future, including their early days in New York City, encounters with villains and friends, and a peek into their distant, but wild future. Throughout the season, fans saw both new and familiar friends and foes as each tale unfolded. The season also paid homage to legendary Universal monsters such as the Mummy, Dracula, the Werewolf, and Dr. Frankenstein, in which the Heroes in a Half Shell faced-off against some of their most nightmare-ist foes yet.

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which aired in 2017, was the final season of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2012) before Nickelodeon relaunched the franchise in 2018 with it's latest iteration, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which is currently airing on Nick channels globally. A series has been renewed for a second season, and a Rise of the TMNT movie is currently in production for Netflix.

The latest manifestation of the show finds the four turtle brothers discovering new powers and hidden realms as they fight villains on the streets of New York City. While Rise holds onto aspects of earlier shows that fans of the Ninja Turtles love—big action scenes, cool lingo and strong brotherhood—it also brings to light a more youthful side of the half-shell heroes.

Vidgo Live TV Streaming Service Launches In The U.S.; Includes Nickelodeon, Nicktoons and TeenNick

A new subscription-based online TV service has quietly launched in the United States.

Named Vidgo, the introductory priced $14.99 service, which is available across all connected devices, features live access to more than 48 channels, including Viacom's Nickelodeon, NickToons, TeenNick, TV Land, MTV, MTV2, MTV Classic, BET, CMT, CMT Music, Comedy Central, Paramount Network, as well as A&E, American Heroes, Animal Planet, Aspire, beIN Sports, Cheddar, Cooking Channel, Curiosity Stream, Destination America, Discovery Channel, Discovery Family, Discovery Life, DIY, FYI, Game Show Network, Hallmark, Hallmark Drama, HGTV, History, Investigation Discovery, Inspiration, Law & Crime, Lifetime, Lifetime Movies, Motor Trend, Motorsports Network, Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN), Pac 12 Network, Science Channel, Stadium, TLC, Travel Channel, Viceland, VH1, Velocity and UP, among others.

Strangely, the channel line-up doesn't include Nick Jr., Nickelodeon's top-rated channel for preschoolers, however, TeenNick is listed twice, so this could just be a mistake.

Viewers can use Vidgo to watch television on up to 3 devices at any one time.

Besides the new National English Package, Vidgo also offers packages aimed at Spanish-speaking viewers. There's the Latino Streaming Plan which offers 20 channels for $14.99 per month. While those looking for more content can go with the Latino Mas Streaming Plan, priced at $24.99 per month, however, this package doesn't include any Viacom channels at this time. VIDGO Latino Mas also gives free access to sports channel DAZN.

Based in Atlanta, Vidgo recently inked a partnership with Kiswe Mobile to better track mobile audiences as well as gather “strategic resources” to help it deliver live and social streaming of sports, entertainment, family and Latino programming.

The whole point of Vidgo is a no-problem service therefore getting started is fairly easy.

As this is a service that's been a long time in development, the app support at launch is wide. Vidgo can be downloaded on Android smartphones and tablets, as well as on Android TV. Vidgo is also available on iOS devices, Amazon Fire TV and watchable via the Chrome and Firefox browsers.

Vidgo becomes the latest live TV streaming service to arrive boasting an ultra-low monthly price. At $14.99 per month, Vidgo is directly up against the likes of AT&T's WatchTV and Philo. WatchTV also costs $15 per month but provides access to 41 channels. In contrast, Philo ups the price to $20 per month but also the channel lineup to 58.

Vidgo first announced its intention to launch a prepaid streaming service back at CES 2016. Since then, the service has slowly evolved into being. At first, Vidgo offered international packages before requesting beta testers for the U.S. version of the service. Now, rather quietly, the service has launched in the U.S.

The quietness of the launch is likely indicative of this still being a service in the early stages of deployment. Therefore, although pricing and the channel lineup are announced, they might be subject to change over the coming weeks and months. For example, the advertised number of channels is currently higher than the actual number of channels on offer.

Vidgo joins a crowded market looking to compete and sustain the traditional pay-TV business model online. Competitors include Dish Network’s Sling TV, Sony PlayStation Vue, AT&T TV Now, Netflix, YouTube TV, Sony Crackle and Shout! Factory TV, among others. There's also ad-supported video-on-demand (AVOD) services, such as Viacom's Pluto TV.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Aug. 21, 2019 -- Universal Brand Development (Universal), the LEGO Group and Nickelodeon have announced the all-new, animated mini-series, LEGO® Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar, will debut Saturday, Sept. 14, at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon in the U.S. The 13-episode CG-animated mini-series, taking place before the events of 2015's blockbuster Jurassic World film, will continue to premiere Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

Set in 2012, newly hired animal behaviourist, Owen Grady, and Assistant Manager of Park Operations, Claire Dearing (characters played in the films by Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) and Bryce Dallas Howard, respectively, though both are voiced by different actors for this animated series) team up on Isla Nublar to deal with everything the Jurassic World park throws their way, including runaway dinosaurs, ongoing construction to expand the park, throngs of tourists, unpredictable tropical weather and an impulsive boss!

In LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar, there's also a mysterious saboteur with surprising ties to the park's past who is on a quest to find a legendary treasure and destroy Jurassic World forever. What could possibly go wrong? Well…everything.

A prequel to the brand-new mini-series, LEGO Jurassic World: The Secret Exhibit Part 1 and Part 2, will be available on the Nick App and VOD beginning Sunday, Aug. 25. In The Secret Exhibit, Simon Masrani has an idea for a new attraction that is guaranteed to keep Jurassic World at the forefront of theme park entertainment, but in order for it to succeed, he needs his right-hand can-do problem solver, Claire Dearing, and newcomer Owen Grady, to get a trio of dinosaurs across the park to the new, super-secret exhibit. Unfortunately, delivering the dinosaurs to the new attraction is not as easy as they thought! LEGO Jurassic World: The Secret Exhibit is currently airing on Nickelodeon, with Part 2 premiering Saturday, August 24 at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT).

Beginning, Sunday Aug. 25, a sneak peek episode, "Mission Critical," will be available for fans to watch on the Nick App, Nick On Demand and Nickelodeon's YouTube channel.

Building sets inspired by LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar are currently available at retail globally, including Dilophosaurus on the Loose (75934), Baryonyx Face-Off: The Treasure Hunt (75935), Triceratops Rampage (75937) and T. rex vs Dino-Mech Battle (75938).

Prince George's William Kuklis is bringing bad guy Dennis Nedry to life

William Kuklis, from Prince George, B.C., is thrilled to voice the character of Dennis Nebry in Lego Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar airing now on Nickelodeon. (Facebook/William Kuklis)
The dinosaurs are back and William Kuklis is somewhat responsible.

Kuklis, an actor from Prince George, B.C., is the voice of antagonist Dennis Nedry in the animated mini-series LEGO Jurassic World: Legend of Isla Nublar, which debuted on Nickelodeon Sept. 14. The series is set in an island theme park filled with dinosaurs created from prehistoric DNA that audiences first saw in the 1993 blockbuster film Jurassic Park.

Nedry, portrayed by Wayne Knight in the original film, is a computer programmer who accepts bribes to smuggle dinosaur embryos off the island. His meddling leads to several dinosaurs escaping which understandably becomes a bit of a safety risk for other characters.

"You don't want to do a total copy, but you also want to have some of the flavours of the original," said Kuklis about stepping into Knight's role.

Notorious bad guy Dennis Nedry was played by actor Wayne Knight [Catscratch, Tak & the Power of Juju, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness, The Penguins of Madagascar, Seinfeld, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Hot in Cleveland] in the 1993 blockbuster live-action film Jurassic Park. (IMDB)
Kuklis is still having a hard time believing he is a part of the Jurassic franchise family.

"I was thinking of me and 50,000 other people auditioning for this part — there is no way I'm getting it," said Kuklis in an interview with CBC's Daybreak North.

But get it he did. And soon he will have his own plastic plaything to prove it.

The characters in the cartoon series are all depicted as Lego figurines, which Kuklis said should hit store shelves soon.

"Lego anything is insane," said Kuklis, who is the father of two kids. "I am going to keep it up high, away from the children."

The 13-episode mini-series will continue to air Saturday mornings at 11:30 a.m. PT on Nickelodeon.

William Kuklis is a singer-songwriter based out of Prince George, but he's also a voice actor who can be heard Saturday mornings playing the character of Dennis Nedry — first brought to the screen by Wayne Knight — in a new Lego animated miniseries set in the Jurassic World. 7:03

Senza volerlo i due ragazzini diventano protagonisti dello show esibendosi come ballerini.

Behind-the-Scenes of Nickelodeon's 'Are You Afraid of the Dark' Revival

Nickelodeon is preparing for the return of The Midnight Society with the all-new Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-part limited series event based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic, reimagined for a new generation this October, and to celebrate, Mashable had the chance to go behind-the-scenes at the filming of the new trilogy! Check out what they discovered below!:

Fresh horrors from a classic: Behind-the-scenes of the new ‘Are You Afraid of the Dark'

The 'Are You Afraid of the Dark?' reboot is a carnival of horrors. | Image: Nickelodeon

Submitted for approval of the Midnight Society: Our story begins in a darkened Vancouver warehouse. Fog pours in, illuminated by eerie blue shafts of light escaping from the basement below. A ring master's stage lies at the end of the vast expanse, embroiled in flames. A girl runs past, dressed all in white, terror in her eyes.

This is what it's like behind the scenes of the Are You Afraid of the Dark reboot.

For those who grew up on the original '90s run of Are You Afraid of the Dark, some of those stories remain still seared into our brains decades later: Skeletons jumping out of pools, getting trapped in a mirror, losing your ability to speak in a haunted library, a grinning monster that distorts your face forever.

Or just the sound of wind chimes in the opening credits, as the light from a flickering match goes out.

Lyliana Wray is captivating as protagonist Rachel. | Image: Nickelodeon

From what we saw on our set visit for the upcoming limited series premiering Oct. 11 on Nickelodeon, the reboot continues the original's beloved legacy with fresh horrors that new and older generations won't be forgetting any time soon.

"I wanted to capture exactly how terrifying it felt to watch it as a kid," said showrunner BenDavid Grabinski who was a huge fan himself growing up. "When you look back, it's the isolated moments, those images that are the most long-lasting."

Some of it is enough to make you ask, wait, is this still a kids show? But the reality is, in 2019, the threshold is higher, with access to hardcore adult horror just a button click away for anyone.

Some of it is enough to make you ask, wait, is this still a kids show?

"The general rule was not to put in anything that'd keep a kid up for weeks," said Grabinski, before adding mischievously, "But maybe it takes a little longer to sleep the first night."

Despite raising the bar to meet modern standards though, Are You Afraid of the Dark still serves as that "gateway drug" into the genre, giving kids a taste for more mature horror down the line.

It's exactly what happened for nearly every adult crew and cast member on set, who all grew up to go into the business of making horror.

Both the reboot and original were shot in Canada. So much of the Canadian crew feels like it's a literal return to the neck of the woods that spooked them as kids — like a scene we saw shot at a schoolyard with real kids playing in the background, right across from a cemetery.

It not all nostalgic reverence, though. The reboot doesn't retread the original's stories or characters.

"When you think of Are You Afraid of the Dark, what comes to mind is the Midnight Society, kids around a campfire telling stories. But after that, the beauty of the show is it's a blank slate," Grabinski said.

There's no explicit connection to the original group of kids, though Grabinski likes the idea of many Midnight Societies having existed forever all across the country, each operating independently.

The reboot's three-episode arc follows one in the small town of Argento, Oregon (horror aficionados will find many other easter egg references like that). When Rachel, a shy new girl played by Lyliana Wray, arrives at Herbert West Middle School, a member of the secret society sees her drawing nightmarish doodles and invites her to audition.

The reboot is, "much darker, much more dangerous."

Rachel tells the story of the Carnival of Doom. The next day, it comes to town, seemingly sprung into reality from her imagination, bringing with it a barrage of other metaphysical horrors.

But, Grabinski insisted, this isn't a straightforward stories-come-to-life situation like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark or Goosebumps. A bigger twist is afoot. "Then the mystery becomes, well, then how is it happening? How is this real? Needless to say, you’ll find out."

At the center of the nightmarish carnival is Mr. Tophat, a villain described by Grabinski as "an evil Master of Ceremonies with a great costume and a little bit evil Willy Wonka."

The reboot is, "much darker, much more dangerous. It's right out of any great horror movie," agreed Rafael Casal, the talented multi-hyphenate writer-director-actor from Blindspotting that's now bringing Mr. Tophat to life.

As we talked on the warehouse set of a nightmare sequence, he excitedly ran his hands along the elaborate sequins of his flashy costume, remembering how the original show shook him to his core.

"You needed to stay up late for Nick at Night, the house would be dark, and that opening title sequence with the music," he grabbed his chest as if reliving it right then. "It reminded you of the collective horror from every past episode."

Into the woods we go ... | Image: Nickelodeon

What made Are You Afraid of the Dark so effective wasn't jump scares, Casal said. It was bringing a Twilight Zone-like psychological horror to the everyday fears kids deal with at school and throughout this frighteningly transitional time in their lives.

Having identified with the horror as a kid, he's now itching to play the opposition, an embodiment of the fears the kids face — and ultimately conquer.

Both he and Grabinski joked they'd know they did their jobs right if, for the rest of his life, Casal walks down the street inspiring looks of gleeful terror from young people. He's still thinking of which line he'll whisper back at them to creep them out.

"It reminded you of the collective horror from every past episode."

What makes a great villain, Casal said, is "someone who's wildly unpredictable. You can't understand the origin of their behavior, why they are the way they are. And add a third layer of creepiness: being nice."

Mr. Tophat, who seems to share a twisted longstanding mental connection with Rachel, is as charismatic as he is unsettling. "It makes you ask, what happens when this niceness goes away? What's beneath it?" said Casal. "And the longer he's nice to you, the less you trust it."

It almost sounds like a metaphor for trying to figure out the often baffling rules and mysteries of the adult world as a kid. At that age, adults can seem alarmingly unpredictable, nice one minute, then punishing the next — and you don't even know what you did to cause that shift.

Aside from a perfectly cast and magnetic villain, the developing friendships in the Midnight Society members are as central to the new show as the horror.

Grabinski even required his young cast to watch classics like The Goonies and Monster Squad together, hoping to foster a similarly natural camaraderie on set that'd translate to the screen. Judging from how the five young actors were practically glued at the hip even during breaks, it seems to have worked.

The young cast is just a great hang. | Image: Nickelodeon

"A big part of every project, especially with kids, is getting to know each other and building your chemistry before," said Jeremy Ray Taylor, who plays the nerdy germaphobe Graham. He knows this from experience, having been part of the losers club from It. "The movie nights bring us closer together, so you start learning how to make it a normal conversation in front of the camera too instead of just acting."

Making the kids feel real and relatable seemed essential to modernizing Are You Afraid of the Dark for 2019. Grabinski asked himself what kind of wonderfully weird teens would actually sneak off to tell scary stories around a campfire at midnight? So naturally, they all had to be horror-lovers themselves, like the sassy amateur zombie movie director Akiko (played by Miya Cech).

"I think kids want to see more realistic acting in shows today," said Sam Ashe Arnold, who's the group's jock, Gavin. "We're updating it by going for something more grounded than the original."

"What always stays the same no matter what is fear of the unknown."

Aside from cast bonding, they also did rehearsals where ad-libbing and improvisation was encouraged. They wanted the kids to sound like kids, rather than like adults writing kids.

"What goes on in the series is basically what we're like in real life," said Tamara Smart, who plays the popular cheerleader named Louise. "In some scenes they'll be like, 'Say whatever you want, make it weird, make it awkward.'"

Despite some updates for a 2019 audience, the limited series closely follows the original's mood and atmosphere. There was initially talk of doing a movie instead (still a possibility down the line).

But the network TV episodic format just felt right. Not only because it leaves you with cliffhangers each week, but like the '90s version, you can cut to commercial after a particularly tantalizing reveal, ramping up the anticipation and tension

"What always stays the same no matter what is fear of the unknown," said Grabinski. "What's around the corner? What's behind this mystery? Trying to solve it alongside the kids is as engaging as it is scary."

Daniella Monet and Fiancé Andrew Gardner Welcome Baby Boy, Gio James Gardner

A huge congratulations to Nickelodeon star Daniella Monet and her fiancé Andrew Gardner, who have just welcomed their first child together!

Photo: Daniella Monet/Instagram. Inset: Gregg Deguire/Getty

The Victorious and Paradise Run alum, 30, shared the news on her Instagram feed on Sunday, September 29.

To announce the news, Monet simply shared a close-up photo of her newborn son — whose name she revealed as Gio James Gardner, tagging his own Instagram account — snoozing while resting against his mama, wearing an all-gray knit outfit and beanie.

“And just like that, you are our everything,” Monet captioned the post.

The new mom did not share any other details, including a date of birth.

The couple, who got engaged in December 2017, first announced Monet’s pregnancy in April, telling PEOPLE that it only took them one try to conceive, as she had been tracking her ovulation.

They were so excited about the news that Monet joked Gardner would have started putting their baby’s room together immediately after they received the sex-reveal envelope from the doctor.

“He thinks he’s going to start working on the nursery tomorrow. I had to hide the envelope from him!” she told PEOPLE at the time, explaining that they wanted to wait until mid-May to open it.

Last week, Monet told PEOPLE that she was “planning a natural, unmedicated birth” and had “looked forward to giving birth this way for as long as I can remember” — though “I understand that plans can change, but I’m doing my best to manifest a beautiful experience regardless.”

Showing off her son’s nursery in photos to PEOPLE, Monet said that while the room was ready for its new resident, she and Gardner were equally ready to meet their first child together.

“I’m looking forward to seeing his face and touching his little toes and hands,” she says. “Andrew and I both feel like the moment we see him will feel emotionally overwhelming. It’s still so surreal that we created a little being who we get to create so many memories with.”

The actor also explained the meaningful decision of their child’s moniker, saying they knew it was meant to be. “We fell in love with the name Gio right off the bat,” Monet said.

“Andrew’s nickname was G as a kid, his grandpa goes by Gee and Giovanni happens to be my brother’s middle name,” she added. “He’s a Gio, we just knew it.”

Congratulations again, Daniella & Andrew! :)

Brian Robbins Reveals More Details About 'SpongeBob' Spin-Off 'Kamp Koral'

In an exclusive interview with TV KIDS, Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins revealed more details about Kamp Koral, an original spinoff series of the network's iconic hit, SpongeBob SquarePants!

"Literally my second or third day here, I was asked to go to a SpongeBob season 12 or 13 pickup meeting. I asked a lot of questions. What I realized is that we’ve made a lot of shows over many, many years, but the shows basically stayed the same. We had all these great characters in the world of SpongeBob, but we never individually explored their origin stories or their histories or put them in their own environments," Robbins told TV KIDS.

"So we decided to put a room together and really look at what the SpongeBob universe looks like. And out of that came the Kamp Koral idea and actually a couple of other ideas. Kamp Koral is the first show. It will be a limited summer series," added Robbins.

"I just saw amazing animation tests and conceptual art that blew us all away. It’s basically about how Patrick and SpongeBob met in summer camp when they were kids. It’s not SpongeBob babies, so to speak, but it is in CG, and they’re younger and cuter. Sandy is really cute in it. She has braces. It’s really fun and it looks different but still feels like SpongeBob. I couldn’t be more excited about it."

The CG-animated series (13 episodes) introduces 10-year-old SpongeBob SquarePants during his summer at sleepaway camp. The series was greenlit earlier this year and commenced production in June 2019 at Nickelodeon Studios in Burbank, California.

In the series, SpongeBob and his pals spend the summer building underwater campfires, catching wild jellyfish, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck at the craziest camp in the kelp forest, Kamp Koral.

Marc Ceccarelli and Vincent Waller (SpongeBob SquarePants) are co-executive producers on the series.

Nickelodeon Animation are currently recruiting staff to work on the series. Visit https://www.nickanimation.com/jobs to see all vacancies and to apply.

SpongeBob SquarePants, which was recently greenlit for a 13th season, has reigned as the number-one kids’ animated series on TV for the last 17 years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical which is now touring North America and a global fan base. SpongeBob SquarePants is seen in more than 208 countries and territories, translated in 55+ languages, and averages more than 100 million total viewers every quarter. SpongeBob SquarePants is created by Stephen Hillenburg and produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif.

Nickelodeon's is currently in the midst of the network's "Best Year Ever", a year-long global celebration of one of the most iconic TV series and characters ever created. The “Best Year Ever” launched with the premiere of “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” an original mixed live-action and animated special earlier this summer, and leads up to the Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies theatrical, The SpongeBob Movie: It's a Wonderful Sponge, coming May 2020.

A spinoff of Nick’s animated hit The Loud House, The Casagrandes tells the story of 11-year-old Ronnie Anne who moves to the city with her mom and older brother to live with their big, loving family, the Casagrandes. Following its premiere, the series moves to its regular timeslot on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT) beginning Saturday, Oct. 19, on Nickelodeon.

Starring Izabella Alvarez (Westworld) as 11-year-old Ronnie Annie, Carlos PenaVega (Big Time Rush) as her brother Bobby and Sumalee Montano (Nashville) as her mom Maria, the series showcases the culture, humor, and love that’s part of growing up in a multigenerational Mexican-American family. After moving in with their grandparents in Great Lakes City, Ronnie Anne adjusts to her new life living under one roof and over the family-run mercado (local market), which is a gathering place for everyone in the neighborhood.

Alvarez, PenaVega and Montano bring these characters to life, alongside: Carlos Alazraqui (The Fairly OddParents) as Carlos, “Tio;” Roxana Ortega (The League) as Frida, “Tia;” Alexa PenaVega (Spy Kids) as Carlota; Jared Kozak (Born this Way) as CJ; Alex Cazares (The Boss Baby: Back in Business) as Carl; Ruben Garfias (East Los High) as Hector, “Abuelo;” and Sonia Manzano (Sesame Street) as Rosa, “Abuela.” Additionally, Eugenio Derbez (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) gives voice to Dr. Santiago, a physician living and working in Peru, who is Ronnie Anne and Bobby’s father.

In the first episode, “Going Overboard,” Ronnie Anne finds out her Tio Carlos was a famous skateboarder and she begs him to teach her some new moves. Then, in “Walk Don’t Run,” Ronnie Anne and Sid start a dog-walking business to save up for a new skateboard in a plan that quickly gets out of hand.

The Casagrandes premiere will encore at 3:30 p.m., 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon. The Casagrande family was first introduced in the The Loud House special, “The Loudest Mission: Relative Chaos,” which premiered May 2017 and ranks as the highest-rated premiere for the series in Live+7 with both K2-11 (6.6/1.8M) and K6-11 (8.1/1.3M).

The Casagrandes is produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif. From TV KIDS:

TV KIDS: And you have The Casagrandes, a spin-off of The Loud House, coming up.

ROBBINS: I can’t take credit for that. It was happening before I got here. But I must say I’m super proud of the show. First of all, it’s the first animated show starring a multigenerational Mexican-American family. And it couldn’t be a better time to have that show. Besides that, it is hilarious. It’s so well written and the characters are so good. And I can’t wait to share it with the world. I think the show is terrific.

BURBANK, Calif.–Feb. 14, 2019–Nickelodeon is unveiling a new content slate created for today’s kids who are multicultural, family-focused, and in control of their entertainment choices across platforms. With a foundation of supercharging its globally powerful original franchises like SpongeBob SquarePants, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and PAW Patrol, and welcoming new, acquired properties into its ecosystem, Nickelodeon’s new slate represents a renewing of its commitment to serve all kids, through a multicultural lens; bringing in talent kids love from other platforms and formats; and opening up its demo to capture kid and parent co-viewing, to satisfy this generation’s demand for shared family time.

The slate, announced today by Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins, was put into development in October at the beginning of Robbins’ tenure and will begin to debut on Nick’s platforms this summer.

“We have a laser focus on who kids are today, and what they want, so we are making a wider variety of shows and series for them, and we’re working with brand-new kinds of talent and producers,” said Robbins. “We have a new creative team in place and a renewed energy that we’re harnessing to bring the buzz back to Nick.”

Nick’s new direction was developed against the network’s defining research insights into today’s kids, who: are the most diverse generation ever, with the fastest growing segment being Hispanics; who cite shared experiences with their parents and family as their top priority; and who are in near-total control of their entertainment choices, enabled by any one of the 12 connected devices found in today’s average household.

Added Robbins: “Kids today are their own programmers, so we have been working very fast to transfer our expertise as television content makers to all the new places and platforms kids are going to,” said Robbins. “Our vision for a new Nickelodeon is to fill up every screen, of every size, to make an impact on as many consumers as we can and to be at the forefront of conversation for today’s kids and families.”

Highlights of the new slate include: the return of Nick’s iconic All That sketch-comedy series, showcasing a whole new set of kids alongside members of the original cast, with Kenan Thompson serving as an executive producer; a reimagined version of Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader, hosted by John Cena; an all-new unboxing adventure series starring Ryan of Ryan ToysReview, titled Ryan’s Mystery Playdate; America’s Most Musical Family (working title), a nationwide search and competition to crown the next big family musical act; The Casagrandes, the animated spinoff from The Loud House, featuring a multigenerational Mexican-American family; an untitled scripted music-based series set in a boarding school for the performing arts, produced by Simon Fuller and OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, and featuring original songs and performances in every episode; and ideas in development to spin off the characters from SpongeBob SquarePants into their own stand-alone series, specials and feature-length movies.

Robbins continued: “Everything we’re making will have different formats, for all platforms, so we can travel the audience back and forth from one to the other, while being home base for all the shows, the biggest franchises, the characters and talent they love.”

Details of Nickelodeon’s New Content Slate:

Today’s kids represent the most diverse generation ever. Joining Nick’s diverse programming slate is content to super-serve Hispanic viewers, including:

  • The Casagrandes– Premiering in October, this companion to the animated hit The Loud House follows 11-year-old Ronnie Anne after she moves to the city with her older brother Bobby and her mom, where they now live with their big, loving and chaotic multigenerational Mexican-American family, the Casagrandes.
  • Santiago of the Seas (formerly The Swashbuckling Adventures of Capitán Calavera) This interactive animated series follows the adventures of 8-year-old Santiago Montes, a brave and kind-hearted pirate, and features a Spanish-language and Latino-Caribbean culture curriculum.
  • The Dora the Explorer Theatrical Release Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players and Nickelodeon Movies present in association with Walden Media the Dora the Explorer live-action movie, opening in theatres this August. Having spent most of her life exploring the jungle with her parents, nothing could prepare Dora (Isabela Moner) for her most dangerous adventure ever–high school. Always the explorer, Dora quickly finds herself leading Boots (her best friend, a monkey), Diego (Jeffrey Wahlberg), a mysterious jungle inhabitant (Eugenio Derbez), and a ragtag group of teens on a live-action adventure to save her parents (Eva Longoria, Michael Peña) and solve the impossible mystery behind a lost Inca civilization.

Nickelodeon is working with talent kids love from other platforms, while also creating content featuring their favorite formats and genres.

  • Ryan’s Mystery Playdate Created and produced by pocket.watch, this brand-new live-action preschool series follows YouTube superstar Ryan, of Ryan ToysReview, his parents and animated friends Gus the Gummy Gator and Combo Panda as they work together to tackle a series of imaginative, physical challenges and unbox puzzles to reveal the identity of his mystery playdate.
  • Simon Fuller/Ryan Tedder-Produced Untitled Project– A scripted music series set in a boarding performing arts high school, with original music in every episode. A nationwide search will be conducted to cast the show. Simon Fuller is a legendary, multi-hyphenate creator, producer and manager behind iconic franchises such as the global Idol phenomenon and Spice Girls. Grammy Award-winning Ryan Tedder is the frontman of OneRepublic and writer behind countless hit songs from artists ranging from Beyoncé and Adele, to Camila Cabello, Ed Sheeran and Kelly Clarkson, among others.

Nick’s insights reveal that family time is the most important passion point for kids and parents today, with their top priority being to spend time together and look for opportunities through shared experiences. Today’s families state that watching TV together is their favorite activity, corresponding to the current 10-year high in co-viewing, where 44% of kids’ viewing is with an adult. To capture co-viewing opportunities, Nick is producing shows with built-in appeal to every family member, including:

  • Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader The iconic family game show will return with all-new episodes hosted by John Cena, who will also serve as an executive producer. Mark Burnett, Chairman of Worldwide Television, MGM (Survivor, The Voice) and Barry Poznick, President, Unscripted Television, MGM (Beat Shazam, The World's Best) will return as executive producers of the reboot, which places kids squarely in the center of the action. The series is slated to premiere this year.
  • The Substitute In this new hidden camera prank show, celebrities are transformed by a team of special effects artists to go undercover as substitute teachers to surprise a class of unsuspecting students. A $25,000 donation will be made to each school. The Substitute is produced by The Intellectual Property Corporation, and Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman (Undercover Boss), with Mike Harney serving as showrunner.
  • America’s Most Musical Family (working title) This brand-new competition series, produced by The Intellectual Property Corporation, and Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman (So You Think You Can Dance), follows the nationwide search for the most talented family in America.
  • Are You Afraid of the Dark? The beloved anthology series will return this October as a brand-new miniseries and follow new members of the Midnight Society as they gather around a campfire in the woods to share scary stories. The miniseries will coincide with the upcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark? theatrical movie from Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players’ and Nickelodeon Movies, in theaters October 2019.
  • All That Pop-culture phenomenon All That is returning for a new generation of kids. The new weekly sketch-comedy series will showcase an all-new cast of kids, with cast members through the years making special appearances during the season. Kenan Thompson (Saturday Night Live) and Kevin Kay (All That, SpongeBob SquarePants, Lip Sync Battle, Lip Sync Battle Shorties, Yellowstone) will executive produce, with comedian Jermaine Fowler (Super Donuts, Sorry to Bother You) serving as consulting producer on the series slated to premiere this summer.

Nickelodeon is home to some of the biggest franchises kids love, and the network is taking steps to increase these properties’ reach and grow their footprint, as well as welcome in new franchises, to ensure Nick is the top destination for everything kids want:

  • SpongeBob SquarePants– Nick is commemorating the 20th anniversary with the “Best Year Ever,” a tribute that includes an original one-hour special, “SpongeBob’s Big Birthday Blowout,” premiering Friday, July 12. Additionally, plans are in place to expand the SpongeBob SquarePants universe with spinoffs focused on the core characters into formats such as new series, specials and feature-length movies. The anniversary will culminate with the May 22, 2020 release of the new SpongeBob theatrical, It’s A Wonderful Sponge, from Paramount Pictures, Paramount Players’ and Nickelodeon Movies.
  • Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Season two of the 2D-animated series will premiere this fall, and follow the Turtles as they continue to hone their ninja skills, uncover new, powerful weapons and encounter a world beneath the streets of New York City. The franchise is also being expanded with an original, feature-length animated movie being produced by Nickelodeon Studios for Netflix.
  • Blue’s Clues & You!– This remake of the groundbreaking, curriculum-driven interactive series Blue’s Clues brings back beloved puppy Blue for an all-new generation of preschoolers. Premiering in November, the series features all-new CG animation, updates to favorite characters and stars Broadway actor Joshua Dela Cruz as the new live-action host.
  • Paddington (working title) – Actor Ben Whishaw (Paddington 1 & 2) will reprise his role as the beloved voice of the title character in the new CG-animated series, which follows a younger Paddington and his adventures in London with the Brown family and their friends. Paddington is a Heyday Films and STUDIOCANAL production in association with Copyrights, helmed by Adam Shaw of Blue Zoo (Go Jetters, Digby Dragon, Miffy, Q Pootle 5), and developed for television and written by Jon Foster and James Lamont (The Amazing World of Gumball, Cuckoo, Paddington 1 & 2). The series will be produced by multi-award-winning David Heyman (producer of all eight Harry Potter films, Gravity, Paddington 1 & 2), Karen Davidsen (formerly with Disney and HIT Entertainment) and Simon Quinn (Isle of Dogs, Fantastic Mr. Fox). Paddington is executive produced by Rosie Alison (Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Paddington 1 & 2) and co-produced by Rob Silva.
  • LEGO® CITY– The all-new high-stakes CG-animated comedy, created and produced by LEGO Group, depicts the funny, smart, and dynamic slices of life within the sprawling and diverse LEGO CITY community. Set to debut this year, the series follows the intertwining paths of the city's everyday heroes as they work together to stop a mysterious master criminal who begins to wreak havoc on their town.

‘SpongeBob’ Spinoffs Planned as Nickelodeon Chief Brian Robbins Tries to Win Back Young Viewers

In an era when young TV viewers are increasingly abandoning the traditional TV screen, Brian Robbins wants to make it very difficult for kids to give up on Nickelodeon.

The veteran producer who was named Nickelodeon’s president in October hasn’t spent his first months in the role noodling over the formula for the network’s famous green slime. He’s been working to fill its programming pipeline with new shows, even as he and other executives realize Nickelodeon’s target audience is more likely to be watching video on YouTube and Netflix via smartphones as they are to watch the TV set in the family room.

Robbins’ goal — simple to state but hard to achieve — is to make hit shows that viewers will seek out on any screen.

“There are definitely headwinds, and for all of linear television. In many ways, the kids’ business has been more affected by it,’” Robbins told Variety, pointing to young viewers’ quick adoption of streaming and mobile devices in recent years. Still, he notes, “if you make content and shows that kids want to watch, they will show up for it.”

The Viacom-owned cabler is ready to take some big swings after a long ratings slump. Nickelodeon’s fortunes are central to the earnings of the parent company, which makes Robbins’ mission of rehabilitating the brand that much more urgent.

Among the new properties heading to Nickelodeon is the first-ever spin-offs of characters from its mainstay animated series “SpongeBob SquarePants.” Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to develop series featuring Paddington, the popular British bear, and characters from the recent spate of Lego movies. There are some revivals of Nick favorites in the works as well – and new moves to make Nickelodeon content available on platforms that kids like to watch.

Robbins unveils his first Nickelodeon programming slate just as the TV industry is looking to the start of its annual “upfront” derby, when U.S. TV networks try to sell the bulk of their ad inventory for the coming season. Kid-focused networks have suffered in recent months: Nickelodeon — which still boasts a larger total audience than its primary linear competitors, WarnerMedia’s Cartoon Network and Disney Channel — saw its audience between 2 and 11 years of age decline 24% in the fourth quarter compared to the year-earlier period. Cartoon Network’s audience in that age range was down 37% in that time period, while Disney Channel’s was off 30%.

Robbins brings with him, however, a long history with Nickelodeon programming. He was a co-creator and producer of the channel’s popular sketch program, “All That” and its many spin offs, as well as series on other networks, such as the WB/CW dramas “Smallville” and “One Tree Hill. More recently, Robbins founded AwesomenessTV, the teen-focused content factory that was acquired by Viacom in 2017.

Millions of dollars are at stake for Nickelodeon as upfront season begins. Nickelodeon nabbed approximately $729 million in advertising revenue in 2018, according to Kagan, a market-research firm that is part of S&P Global Intelligence. The Nickelodeon empire, which also includes Nick Jr. and other cable networks is the largest division of parent company Viacom and thus its performance is highly scrutinized by investors.

“Brian Robbins is a terrific executive who, thanks to his work at Awesomeness, understands the psyche of his audience,” said Michael Nathanson, a media-industry analyst with the firm MoffettNathanson. “But his challenge on the linear side is quite large.”

Robbins realizes Nickelodeon must make changes that acknowledge the big changes in its audience’s viewing habits.

”The cable model was a rinse-and-repeat model. Today we live in a binge-viewing world. Give me a fresh show. Give me another fresh show. I want to watch it, eat it up and go on to the next show,” Robbins said. “What used to be OK was having one or two hits, then making a zillion episodes of them, and then repeating them. That was enough to satisfy the kid audience because they didn’t have choice. I think today we need to make a volume of quality franchises, but not necessarily feed a million episodes of those shows. We need to keep a constant number of new shows coming, and not necessarily make one show with 80 episodes.”

He plans to bring new talent to the network from some of the venues that have lured young viewers elsewhere. “Ryan’s Mystery Playdate,” for example, is a live-action series that follows Ryan, the kid star of the “Ryan ToysReview” on YouTube, along with his parents and some animated pals. The series features its players working through physical challenges as well as puzzles to reveal the mystery in the title. “Playdate” is slated to debut in the spring.

And he’s hoping to lure kids with some star power. WWE’s John Cena will host new episodes of game show “Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader.” Producer Simon Fuller and OneRepublic singer Ryan Tedder will produce a scripted music series set in a boarding performing arts high school, with all-new music and performances in each episode. The Lego series, “Lego City,” is a CG-animated comedy that follows many characters as they seek to stop a master criminal. “Paddington,” featuring actor Ben Whishaw as the voice of the title bruin, follows the famous bear through adventures in London.

Some franchises are being readied for new venues. Nickelodeon already unveiled a deal to make movies featuring “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “The Loud House” characters for Netflix. A live-action “Dora The Explorer” movie is slated for release in August, with Isabela Moner in the title role and Benicio Del Toro as her nemesis, Swiper. “We know that linear television is the most important thing to us, but beyond that, the idea is to fill up every screen of every size,” said Robbins.

Robbins is eager to broaden Nickelodeon’s slate of shows that kids and parents watch together, to deliver the co-viewing demographic that is prized by some advertisers. One such entry is “The Substitute,” a hidden-camera prank show that has celebrities go undercover as substitute teachers; a $25,000 donation will be made to the school hosting each new episode. “America’s Most Musical Family” will mount a nationwide search for the most talented family in America. And Nickelodeon intends to revive “Are You Afraid of the Dark,” the anthology series that boasts scary stories, as a new miniseries that will coincide with a movie based on the show slated for Oct. 20.

Robbins also aims to bring more diversity to Nickelodeon’s air. “Santiago of the Seas” is an interactive series slated for 2020 that follows the adventures of a kind-hearted, 8-year-old pirate, and features a Spanish-language and Latino-Caribbean culture curriculum. “The Casagrandes” is a companion series to “The Loud House,” and focuses on a chaotic multi-generational family.

The decision to broaden “SpongeBob” may be Robbins’ most surprising move. The series has been a staple of Nickelodeon since 1999, which means it has multiple generations of fans to reach.

“That’s our Marvel Universe,” Robbins said. “You have this amazing show that’s run for almost twenty years.”

While he pledged that Nickelodeon will always make “SpongeBob,” Robbins sees ample room to explore other characters. Among the options on the table are to “tell an original story about SpongeBob and Patrick, or maybe tell a Sandy Cheeks stand-alone story, or can Plankton have his own?” Robbins mused. “I think the fans are clamoring for it.”

Why Nickelodeon Did Away With Its Usual Upfront Kickoff Event This Year

Network opted for 'intimate' meetings where new chief Brian Robbins could share his vision

Last year's splashy upfront event featured celebs like John Cena, but Nickelodeon is opting for smaller meetings going forward. - Getty Images

One year ago today, Nickelodeon held its upfront presentation, which has long served as the unofficial kickoff to the annual upfront season. But this year, the network isn’t holding its usual big upfront event. Instead, it’s following in the footsteps of its Viacom sibling networks—and many others through the industry—and swapping spectacle for smaller agency meetings.

The changes come as Nickelodeon enters the upfront with a new leader for the first time in 13 years: Brian Robbins, who came on in October following the June exit of longtime Nickelodeon Group president Cyma Zarghami.

Instead of its traditional upfront event—last year’s presentation included appearances by John Cena, JoJo Siwa, Nick Cannon and the cast of the SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical—Robbins and Sean Moran, Viacom’s head of marketing and partner solutions, opted for a new approach this year.

Nickelodeon kicked off its upfront business at last month’s Toy Fair in New York, announcing its new programming slate at a presentation for toy clients. Over the next two weeks, it held two additional meetings in the Viacom building for agencies and holding companies, during which Robbins shared his new vision for the network and Moran made his upfront pitch. Robbins will then represent Nickelodeon alongside the other Viacom programming chiefs next month at the company’s upfront agency dinners, which Moran has been holding since 2017.

During those client and agency meetings, attendees “got a real sense for where we’re going, for the enormity of Brian’s vision and how we’re trying to make the complexity of reaching kids and family something that Nickelodeon can provide as a one-stop shop,” said Moran.

This year’s upfront changeup speaks to the team’s new mentality, “which is making sure that people see us as a solutions provider,” said Moran. “We’re making it more tailored and intimate to them so that we really think about their needs going forward.”

Viacom, which held five lavish upfront presentations as recently as 2016 for its various networks, scrapped most of those events two years ago in favor of smaller agency dinners. BET held an event in 2017 before it also made the switch, leaving Nickelodeon as the company’s last upfront event in 2018.

“At Nickelodeon, we can bring people to the most connected influencer, and that influencer is going to have the ability to connect clients online as well as on-air.” —Sean Moran, Viacom’s head of marketing and partner solutions

As Moran trimmed those presentations under his watch, he held onto the Nickelodeon event, in part because of the efforts to push the network’s brands and IP into other platforms, like Broadway. So last year’s Nickelodeon upfront was held at New York’s Palace Theatre, the home of SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. Had that opportunity not been available last year, “you would have seen me make this change a little sooner,” said Moran.

During last year’s upfront, Zarghami, then president of Nickelodeon Group, talked about the year’s theme of “reinvention.” She didn’t realize at the time how extensive that reinvention would be: three months later, Zarghami was out, exiting the company after three decades. In October, Nickelodeon tapped Robbins to replace her.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical, which Zarghami said was central to the company’s “reinvention” plans, is also no more, as it closed in September without recouping its $18 million cost.

So it’s no surprise that Nickelodeon wanted to turn the page for its first upfront under Robbins, who began his career as an actor before becoming a producer and director of several ’90s Nickelodeon shows and later founding AwesomenessTV.

“We really wanted that intimate setting where folks could get a true sense of Brian Robbins’ vision and who he was as a person. We didn’t think that could come across the same way in a big theatrical performance where he just does an intro or an outro,” said Moran.

Revivals and spinoffs

Nickelodeon declined to make Robbins available to discuss his new vision and his upfront message to advertisers, but in those meetings last month, he pushed the network’s new content slate. This includes a revival of sketch comedy series All That, which was co-created by Robbins back in 1994 and ran for 10 seasons, to be executive produced by Kenan Thompson, who starred in the original.

The network is also rebooting the game show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, which originally ran on Fox and will now be hosted and executive produced by John Cena. Its Blue’s Clues revival, which was announced at last year’s upfront and is called Blue’s Clues & You!, will premiere in November.

Other new shows include a music competition series to find America’s most musical family, a Lego City animated series and a Paddington animated series with Ben Whishaw voicing the titular bear, as he did in the two recent live-action Paddington movies.

Also, as SpongeBob SquarePants celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, Nickelodeon is developing spinoffs based on the show’s characters that could end up as new series, specials and movies.

“He sees it as our Marvel,” said Moran about Robbins’ SpongeBob plans, “to be able to have so many successful franchises come off what has been the most successful franchise for kids programming ever.”

During those upfront meetings, Moran touted Nickelodeon’s ability to deliver not only kids audiences, but co-viewing via families with shows like Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?

“The highest co-viewing level of any genre is kids programming,” said Moran, noting that last year, 44 percent of kids’ TV viewing occurred with an adult, which he said was the highest number in 10 years. For Hispanic families, the co-viewing number is “closer to 50 percent.”

And those adults “aren’t just in the room, but they are paying attention,” said Moran. Viacom conducted a study with TVision that found that “adults are 61 percent more attentive when watching TV as a family. They pay 77 percent more attention to commercials and are more likely to recall the products advertised.”

This year’s co-viewing push is one way Moran is trying to reposition the network as the entire kids TV category has struggled with steep linear ratings drops.

“We’re surrounding the viewer no matter where they are, so certainly Brian is very excited to be pushing into other platforms and working with talent in new ways that are surrounding that platform,” said Moran. He also noted that Nickelodeon’s share of kids TV is at 46 percent of kids 2–11, up four points from a year ago, and is continuing to grow. “Our clients can’t lose sight of that,” even with the migration to other platforms, said Moran.

During this upfront, Moran is also pushing Nickelodeon’s relationships with influencers, spanning everyone from DJ Khaled, who is hosting the Kids Choice Awards on March 23, to 8-year-old YouTube superstar Ryan, of Ryan ToysReview, who will star in the new series Ryan’s Mystery Playdate.

“At Nickelodeon, we can bring people to the most connected influencer, and that influencer is going to have the ability to connect clients online as well as on-air,” said Moran. “And where Brian’s taking even the linear formats, making sure we have the No. 1 franchises [like SpongeBob and Lego], really brings an energy and a reach to a place where I think we’re going to be affecting business results for clients in a way we’ve never been able to before.”

From TV KIDS:

Nickelodeon’s Brian Robbins on New IP, Reboots

Nickelodeon President Brian Robbins speaks to TV Kids about his strategy for keeping young ones tuned into Nick and Nick Jr.

In October of last year, Bob Bakish, the president and CEO of Viacom, tapped Robbins to lead Nickelodeon at a challenging time for kids’ channels. “I have asked Brian to drive the innovation and transformation that will ensure the brand remains the dominant force with young audiences,” Bakish said in announcing Robbins’ appointment. Robbins had already been part of the Viacom family, having run Paramount Players, and was familiar with meeting the needs of young audiences on digital after founding Awesomeness. Robbins has significantly ramped up Nick’s content slate since becoming president, unveiling new IP, adding a slate of unscripted shows and developing a smattering of reboots, including All That, which he originally produced for Nickelodeon in the 1990s.

TV KIDS: It’s been a year since you were tapped to lead Nickelodeon. What did you identify as key strengths of the brand at the time, and what areas did you feel you wanted to work on?
ROBBINS: It’s been a fast and fun year. The reason I came here—and I had a very nice job before this at Paramount running a movie division—was looking at the landscape and realizing what a powerful brand Nickelodeon is in kids’ and families’ lives. I looked at all the assets that we have: one of the largest animation studios in the world, multiple linear networks, a pretty large digital footprint, consumer products and live entertainment. There’s so much strength in the brand and so much great history and so much IP at the company. Ultimately that’s what drew me here. The truth was, in the last several years before I got here, clearly led by the digital disruption to linear television, the brand lost its way a little bit. There was definitely a lack of IP in the pipeline and talent in the pipeline. And talent in front of and behind the camera. So that’s what I focused on right away.

TV KIDS: What are some of the major lessons you brought from your time as a producer and running Awesomeness and Paramount Players?
ROBBINS: Only make good shows! [Laughs] And, honestly, before I got to Paramount, I was never an executive. I always was a producer and director and ran my own business. Even Awesomeness was a startup in my own company. I’ve always been an entrepreneur and a builder. I think I’ve carried that same attitude here to Nickelodeon. When you’re an entrepreneur, you have to go fast. And you have to build. And you have to be bold. You have to make decisions and own them and not be afraid. So that’s how I approached it.

TV KIDS: The channel has quite a few reboots and spin-offs in the works. What factors do you take into consideration when bringing back a beloved brand like All That?
ROBBINS: We definitely have a handful of reboots and spin-offs in the works. It’s actually a small percentage of our overall slate. That said, people talk about the reboots and spin-offs because it’s known IP and that’s kind of why we’re doing it. Bringing back All That seemed like a no-brainer to me. Obviously, it was my show and I have so much love for it. But All That was such an important part of the history of Nickelodeon because it brought so much talent to the air. It led to Kenan & Kel and The Amanda Show. Then The Amanda Show led to Drake & Josh, it led to iCarly and so on and so on. If you look at that family tree, it’s pretty impressive. When I got here, there weren’t a lot of live-action hits. Henry Danger was kind of it. We didn’t have a whole lot of on-air talent to work with. So [the new All That] was a great way to bring in a bunch of new talent and diverse talent and jumpstart the show. I also knew that All That reached a diverse audience, which was an audience that we needed to reach, especially in the world we live in today. Coincidentally, the show did another thing for us: it brought back the older girl audience to the network. So it’s done three really great things for us. Actually four, because it’s getting good ratings!

TV KIDS: Tell us about how Kamp Koral came about, and what the plans are for the SpongeBob universe.
ROBBINS: Literally my second or third day here, I was asked to go to a SpongeBob season 12 or 13 pickup meeting. I asked a lot of questions. What I realized is that we’ve made a lot of shows over many, many years, but the shows basically stayed the same. We had all these great characters in the world of SpongeBob, but we never individually explored their origin stories or their histories or put them in their own environments. So we decided to put a room together and really look at what the SpongeBob universe looks like. And out of that came the Kamp Koral idea and actually a couple of other ideas. Kamp Koral is the first show. It will be a limited summer series. I just saw amazing animation tests and conceptual art that blew us all away. I couldn’t be more excited about it.

TV KIDS: How are you discovering and incubating new talent?
ROBBINS: All That was a big step for us in bringing new talent on the air. One of the first shows we greenlit when I got here that’s been a big hit for us is Ryan’s Mystery Playdate. We took one of the biggest stars on YouTube and were able to develop a television format in longer form that played into what he did on YouTube. We were able to migrate a large portion of that audience that watches him on YouTube, that wasn’t watching linear television, to watch his show here. So we’ll continue to be opportunistic about people and ideas like that.

TV KIDS: What role do acquisitions play in the Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. lineups?
ROBBINS: Acquisitions are still an important part of filling out the schedule. And more than just filling out the schedule. We had LEGO City Adventures on this summer and we have LEGO Jurassic World running now. That’s a great partnership with LEGO. Ricky Zoom, which just premiered, is another acquisition for us. So we have a handful, and we’re always on the lookout for more.

TV KIDS: What other shows are you working on now that you’re particularly excited about?
ROBBINS: First of all, we have the relaunch of Blue’s Clues in November, which looks amazing. And then we’re launching a show I’m really excited about, called America’s Most Musical Family. It’s a music competition but through our lens. So you have to be either a brother and sister or a whole family. So you’d have to be The Jackson 5 or Donny and Marie. I’ve got to say; it just kills it. It’s so good, and it’s so exciting. I’m also excited about our all-new version of the hit U.K. game show The Crystal Maze, which is going to bring that family competition craze to the U.S. The show features a team of family members who work together to take on a range of physical and mental challenges through escape room-style gameplay. It will definitely bring a whole new type of action and storytelling to Nick.

A shortform preschool series for Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.-branded linear and digital platforms will be produced by Nickelodeon Australia and feature CKN stars Calvin and brother Kaison.

Nickelodeon has struck an exclusive multi-territory agreement with Australian YouTube sensation CKN Toys to develop original content for its branded linear and digital platforms as the Viacom unit continues to bet on young social media influencers.

CKN Toys features seven-year-old Calvin and three-year-old brother Kaison unboxing and testing toys. With more than 13 million YouTube subscribers and more than 12 billion views, it has become one of Australia’s largest YouTube channels and also has big followings in the U.S., the U.K., India, Brazil and other countries.

"Tapping into CKN Toys’ unscripted, spontaneous and fun narrative style," Nickelodeon will initially develop and produce an exclusive original shortform preschool series for Nickelodeon and Nick Jr.-branded linear and digital platforms that will be produced by Nickelodeon Australia and feature Calvin and Kaison. No name for the show was immediately unveiled.

Financial terms of the deal, which covers more than 170 territories, weren't disclosed. The agreement, which follows a similar deal with Ryan ToysReview, was created and brokered by Haven Global, CKN’s worldwide licensing agent, which will work with Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP) across multiple territories.

“CKN Toys has grown to become one of the most popular YouTube channels in the world because kids and parents alike love Calvin’s sense of fun and play, and his good-natured personality,” said Jules Borkent, Executive Vice President (EVP) Content and Network Strategy, Nickelodeon International. “We’re looking forward to developing content that taps into all the things fans already love about CKN Toys and giving it a distinct Nickelodeon look and feel.”

Said Tom Punch, Haven Global’s founder and managing director: "Calvin and Kaison’s infectious and authentic enthusiasm when road-testing toy superheroes, vehicles, construction kits and play sets have turned them into real tastemakers.”

“Haven and Nickelodeon have been partners for decades, so it’s exciting to have the opportunity to develop a consumer products plan that embodies the fun and playful nature of CKN Toys,” says Mark Kingston, Senior Vice President (SVP) of International, Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP).

CKN Toys launched in March 2015 and has become known for such catch phrases as “Oh my goodness!,” “Oh Wow!” and “Yes, I did it!”

ITV Studios’ Maria Kyriacou is joining Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN).

The executive – who most recently served as President of International for ITV Studios – has boarded the media group as President for VIMN UK, Northern and Eastern Europe, replacing James Currell, who stepped down from the same role at the start of June this year after serving 18 years at the company. She joins the business almost two months after Viacom merged with CBS, creating ViacomCBS.

Kyriacou’s new role includes oversight of all media networks and related businesses in 33 European countries, as well as free-to-air (FTA) public service broadcast network Channel 5 in the UK. Based in London, she will report into David Lynn, President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of VIMN.

The exec has been at ITV Studios (Love Island, Come Dine With Me) since 2010, overseeing the production business, global drama strategy and worldwide distribution arm, ITV Studios Global Entertainment (ITVS GE).

Kyriacou spearheaded investments in scripted production labels such as Tomorrow Studios and Circle of Confusion (The Walking Dead) in the US, Cattleya (Gomorrah) in Italy, Tetra Media Studios in France and Piv Bernth’s Appletree Productions in Denmark.

She has also helped establish a network of in-house production bases in Australia, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and the US, producing the company’s IP such as Love Island, Come Dine With Me and Talpa’s The Voice around the world, as well as creating original shows for their own markets.

Kyriacou joined ITV Studios from The Walt Disney Company where she was most recently Senior Vice President (SVP) of digital media distribution for EMEA, overseeing the company’s digital media sales and strategy across both channel and programme distribution.

There’s no official start date yet for Kyriacou — who is still working as the president of international for London-based prodco ITV Studios. The exec exits ITV Studios just as it undergoing a major reorganisation of its international distribution and commercial business, which will take effect in January 2020. The reorganisation will see ITV Studios Global Entertainment splitting into three divisions. The Voice and Big Brother creator John de Mol is also leaving the company.

David Lynn commented: “Maria has led the international expansion of ITV’s studios business and her track record of growing international revenues from production, content licensing and distribution at both ITV and Disney means she is ideally equipped to head our operations managed out of the UK. Her experience of acquiring, integrating and managing creative businesses and her deep knowledge of the international television market will add a valuable perspective to our fast evolving UK operations and I’m delighted to welcome her to the team.

“She will take the helm at an exciting time, with the merger to form ViacomCBS set to confirm us as one of the world’s most important content producers and providers and to open up new opportunities to licence our brands, content and IP.”

Maria Kyriacou added: “I am incredibly excited to be joining David and the team. With the strength and breadth of its brands and its extensive reach, VIMN is in a great place to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by the dynamism of our industry. I’m looking forward to being part of this exciting future.”

VIMN operates 120 TV networks, reaching 90 million households in 33 territories across the UK, Northern and Eastern Europe. This includes free-to-air network Channel 5 in the U.K. It has launched a variety of streaming products across the region, including Paramount+ in the Nordic countries, Hungary and Poland as well as My5, Pluto TV and MTV Play in the UK. The company also operates a TV production business, Viacom International Studios UK, and has other business interests spanning events, consumer products and location-based entertainment.

VIMN has been shuffling around its European management in the last few months and last week the company brought on former Planeta Junior licensing manager Simone Fenu as Senior Director of Licensing and Consumer Products for Italy and Greece. This past April, former director of content strategy for Disney Channels Latin America German Groba joined VIMN as SVP of its youth & music and kids & family brands in Southern and Western Europe and MENA. The conglom also expanded its third-party production in the region in April by launching new production hubs including Viacom International Studios UK, bringing aboard former Comedy Central EVP Jill Offman to lead that prodco.
