Nickelodeon is preparing tricks and treats with its hidden camera prank show The Substitute, this time with John Cena going undercover at the Boys & Girls Club of the Foothills in Monrovia, CA. The debut episode airs on Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon.

Using a full costume and prosthetics to hide his identity, Cena is transformed into three completely unrecognizable camp counselors, pranking campers as a quirky environmentalist, a fearful fire safety expert and a CPR instructor with an unusual best friend.

The series features stars who are transformed by a team of Hollywood special effects artists to go undercover as professionals in various fields, surprising unsuspecting kids in schools, camps and other locations. During the reveal at the end of the day, each organization receives a $25,000 donation.


Following the premiere of The Substitute, a new episode of the hit family game show Are You Smarter Than A 5^th Grader will air at 7:30 p.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon, hosted and executive produced by Cena.

The premiere of The Substitute follows the strong performance of two specials that aired earlier this year, and has been picked up for a full 10-episode order. The Substitute’s first special debuted in April with guest star Jace Norman (Henry Danger), and the second special premiered in May, guest starring multitalented comedian Lilly Singh.

The Substitute is produced by Industrial Media’s The Intellectual Property Corporation. Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman and Todd Hurvitz (Punk’d), serve as executive producers, with Hurvitz also serving as the showrunner. Jessica Brown, Nickelodeon’s Vice President of Current Series, also serves as an executive producer. Are You Smarter Than A 5^th Grader is executive produced by Mark Burnett, Chairman of Worldwide Television, MGM (Survivor, The Voice) and Barry Poznick, President, Unscripted Television, MGM (Beat Shazam,The World’s Best). Set in 2012, newly hired animal behaviourist, Owen Grady, and Assistant Manager of Park Operations, Claire Dearing (characters played in the films by Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) and Bryce Dallas Howard, respectively, though both are voiced by different actors for this animated series) team up on Isla Nublar to deal with everything the Jurassic World park throws their way, including runaway dinosaurs, ongoing construction to expand the park, throngs of tourists, unpredictable tropical weather and an impulsive boss!

Things are going to get spooky in Bikini Bottom this October when Nickelodeon premieres the brand-new SpongeBob SquarePants Halloween special "The Ghost of Plankton" this October!


In the all-new spooktacular SpongeBob SquarePants Halloween episode "The Ghost of Plankton", Plankton becomes a ghost to steal the secret formula, but requires a few lessons from the Flying Dutchman.

The episode will air alongside the new SpongeBob episode "A Cabin in the Kelp"!



According to the trailer, the new Halloween episode will premiere in two weeks on Nickelodeon USA - either Saturday, October 12 or Sunday, October 13, 2019!

Although an exact U.S. premiere date "The Ghost of Plankton" (259B) has yet to be announced, the all-new spine-chilling episode of Nickelodeon's beloved animated series will premiere on Nickelodeon channels internationally this October, including on:

Nickelodeon Africa on Saturday 19th October 2019 as part of the channel's SpongeBob ScarePants stunt.

"The Ghost of Plankton" will also premiere on YTV in Canada on Friday, October 25 at 4 p.m. (ET/PT) as part of the channel's Best Scarepants Ever stunt.

Although unconfirmed, it is thought that Nickelodeon will (Nick or) Treat fans to a phantasmic sneak-peek during the network's "SpongeBob Appreciation Day!" panel at NYCC 2019.

Copyrights Group has appointed PhatMojo as the master toy partner for Paddington for the U.S, Canada, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand!


PhatMojo will create new product ranges tied into all-new media content being developed for Paddington, which will include a TV series launching next year and the new Paddington movies.

PhatMojo, a Los Angeles-based toy company, will produce a full range of toys at different price points to include figurines, playsets, plush and roleplay items. The initial product launch linked to the TV series will take place in fall 2020. Products will be available for distribution across all other markets through new and existing partners.

Other regions will also have new products released at that time from new and existing partners, such as Maurizio Distefano Licensing (MD Licensing) in Italy and Goliath (board games) in the US, Spirit Halloween (costumes) in the US and Rockefeller Productions (stage shows) in North America.

The deal was brokered by Copyrights’ local licensing agents for North America, Bravado and Retail Monster. Fully animated in 3-D, the new Paddington series, The Adventures of Paddington, sees a younger Paddington writing to his Aunt Lucy from Windsor Gardens. Each episode will open and close with Paddington’s letter, as he tells Aunt Lucy what he has learned about life through the day’s new exciting adventure. Actor Ben Whishaw reprises his role as the voice of Paddington, after starring as the character in the live-action animation film series.


Fully animated in 3D, The Adventures of Paddington will launch with 26 x 22-minute episodes, airing on Nickelodeon’s networks worldwide in 2020, excluding France, Canada, China and Japan. The series will invite a new generation of fans into Paddington’s world full of heart, kindness, slapstick humour, fun and generosity.

The movie, Paddington 3, is currently in development.

Currently in production, The Adventures of Paddington is a Heyday Films and STUDIOCANAL production in association with Copyrights. The Adventures of Paddington is helmed by Adam Shaw of Blue Zoo (It's Pony, Digby Dragon, Miffy, Go Jetters, Q Pootle 5), and developed for television and written by Jon Foster and James Lamont (The Amazing World of Gumball, Cuckoo, Paddington 1 & 2).

The much-anticipated The Adventures of Paddington television series will be produced by multi- award-winning David Heyman (producer of all eight of the Harry Potter films, Gravity, Paddington 1 & 2), Karen Davidsen (formerly with Disney and HIT Entertainment) and Simon Quinn (Isle of Dogs, Fantastic Mr. Fox). The series is executive produced by Rosie Alison (Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Paddington 1 & 2) and co-produced by Rob Silva.

The creation of the British-born writer, Michael Bond, Paddington has delighted children and families all over the world for 60 years with stories of the bear from Darkest Peru, famous for his love of marmalade. Paddington is popular with both children and adults.

Paddington’s adventures have been adapted several times for television and at the end of 2014 he made his debut onto the big screen, bringing in US$268 million at the global box office. A further film Paddington 2 followed in 2017 which brought in US$227 million worldwide. A third in the works. The movies were produced by Studiocanal, part of the international content and media group Vivendi.

Italian content powerhouse Rainbow Group has announced the pawsome news that it's popular CG-animated series 44 Cats has been renewed for a second season! 44 Cats debuted last year and is already a ‘pawsome’ success in various countries across the world, enjoying fast growth in both broadcasting and licensing.


Set in the world of animals, 44 Cats follows the daily adventures of Lampo, Milady, Pilou and Meatball – four adorable kittens who are part of a music band named The Buffycats.

The protagonists live and play in the Clubhouse, a garage beside old Granny Pina’s house. Their adventures explore the themes of friendship and altruism: the four cats love helping others and always find creative solutions to everyday hitches and help other cats in need. The series promotes positive attitudes and conveys educational messages dealing with important themes such as tolerance, diversity and solidarity in a funny way.

This eagerly anticipated show made its world debut on Rai Yoyo in Italy on Monday 12th November 2018. Nickelodeon International acquired the broadcast rights to the series in May 2018, and has been rolling the animated series out on Nickelodeon channels and branded blocks around the world, excluding Latin America, throughout 2019. It's currently unknown whether Nickelodeon will acquire the rights to 44 Cats season two.

44 Cats will also make its Canadian premiere on Treehouse TV on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 12:40 p.m. (ET/PT).

Season two of 44 Cats will contain 52 x 13-minute episodes, bringing the number of episodes of the series up to 104 x 13 minute episodes. The second season of 44 Cats is expected to be delivered soon.

44 Cats is inspired by the very popular Italian kids song "44 Gatti", which, in 1968, won the 10th edition of the Zecchino d'Oro and has since entered the collective imagination of Italians.

44 Cats is the first Rainbow Group production jointly developed with Bardel Entertainment, the Canadian animation studio it acquired in 2015, and jointly produced in collaboration with Antoniano Bologna and Rai Ragazzi, and combines great music and edutainment with high quality animation. The series also marks Rainbow’s (Winx Club, Regal Academy, Club 57, Mia and me, Maggie & Bianca Fashion Friends) inaugural foray into preschool programming.

Rainbow inked a licensing deal for 44 Cats with Thai Group’s Hong Kong-based company, Toy Plus in August 2018. Under the terms of the agreement, Toy Plus will develop a variety of products including interactive plush, figurines, play sets, musical toys and more based on the music, creative play patterns and collectability featured in the series. The line of merchandise debuted in Hong Kong in October, and is slated to become available for purchase around the world in fall 2019. Media Service Zawada represents the property in Poland.

Rainbow has also secured a new licensing deal for 44 Cats with holistic lifestyle company Artsana Group. Under the agreement, the company will develop a range of licensed 44 Cats-themed infant educational toys for infants and a nursing line under its Chicco brand, the largest infant brand in Europe. The deal also includes apparel and accessories collections by Prenatal and Chicco. Products are expected to hit retail shelves later this year and will be supported by a dedicated, high-level marketing campaign delivered jointly by Rainbow and Artsana Group, which is also based in Italy.

Additionally, Rainbow has tapped The Joester Loria Group (JLG) to represent the 44 Cats animated series in the U.S., and Bandai America has been appointed by master toy partner Toy Plus to distribute their full range of 44 Cats toys in the U.S., Canada and Australia markets. A collection including figurines, play sets, plush, and musical toys will debut at retailers early next year. Simba Dickie Group’s is the exclusive distributor for Europe and the Middle East.

44 Gatti become the most watched Italian-produced cartoon of 2018 when it debuted on Rai Yoyo on Monday 12th November 2018, recording record ratings of 527,000 viewers and a 2.71% audience share, helping Rai Yoyo to continue to be the most watched children's channel in Italy! Since its debut, 44 Gatti has also held the record for the highest viewing share amongst children aged 4-7 years, reaching 16% and an average audience of 350,000 viewers in the 19.15 timeslot.

Rainbow SpA will be showcasing its portfolio of top-rated properties, including 44 Cats and Winx Club, at Brand Licensing Europe (BLE). Rainbow's booth will be situated at B180.

On the licensing front, "44 Cats" made an immediate impact with major deals signed before the show even hit TV screens. A "44 Cats" live show tour will kick off in the fall, with the premiere show already having sold out.

Nickelodeon will bring Barbapapa to young viewers around the world after sealing an international deal for the new adaptation of the classic 1970s kids picture-book series for its Nick Jr. channel, Variety reports.


Barbapapa dates back to the 1970s when French-American couple Anette Tyson and Talus Taylor created the property. A subsequent toon series was popular internationally, airing in over 40 countries, including on Nick Jr. Italia (as Barbapapà) and Nickelodeon España. Japanese producer Kodansha the made a second series in 1977 and a third in 1999.

The original series, launched in 1970, featured a family of shapeshifters and went on to air in more than 40 countries around the world with subsequent series launching in 1977 and 1999. Now, the reboot, announced at was announced at Annecy/MIFA 2017, is being produced and developed by French animation company Normaal in partnership with France’s largest commercial broadcaster, TF1 who commissioned it for its Tfou kids service. Written by Alice Taylor and Thomas Taylor, the preschool series will be distributed by FESTIVAAL distribution, and is set to be delivered to broadcasters in 2019.


The blob-shaped Barbapapa family, who can morph into other forms but retain their original colors, will come to life in a 52x11mins 2D series. It will be written and brought to life by Alice Taylor and Thomas Taylor.

Viacom-owned Nickelodeon will bow the show on both pay- and free-TV in the UK, Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. Nick Jr. has also licensed the show for pay-TV in France, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Israel, Africa, Latin America, Southeast Asia, India, South Korea and MENA.

Nickelodeon recently ordered new seasons of its hit preschool series PAW Patrol, Blaze and the Monster Machines, Rusty Rivets and Top Wing. The kidsnet has also refreshed the on-air look and feel of its Nick Jr. preschool block and the Nick Jr. channel. More than 400 deliverables including bumpers, IDs, lower thirds, parent-directed curriculum messages and promo packaging feature real kids playing with Nick Jr.’s preschool characters in both animated and real-world environments.

The Casagrandes - New Show

A new home in the city holds big adventures, laughs and love around every corner in Nickelodeon’s new original animated series The Casagrandes, premiering Monday, Oct. 14, at 1:30 p.m. (ET/PT). A spinoff of Nick’s animated hit The Loud House, The Casagrandes tells the story of 11-year-old Ronnie Anne who moves to the city with her mom and older brother to live with their big, loving family, the Casagrandes. Following its premiere, the series moves to its regular timeslot on Saturdays at 11:30 a.m. (ET/PT) beginning Saturday, Oct. 19, on Nickelodeon.

Starring Izabella Alvarez (Westworld) as 11-year-old Ronnie Annie, Carlos PenaVega (Big Time Rush) as her brother Bobby and Sumalee Montano (Nashville) as her mom Maria, the series showcases the culture, humor, and love that’s part of growing up in a multigenerational Mexican-American family. After moving in with their grandparents in Great Lakes City, Ronnie Anne adjusts to her new life living under one roof and over the family-run mercado (local market), which is a gathering place for everyone in the neighborhood.

Are You Afraid of the Dark? - Limited Miniseries Revival

Nickelodeon is preparing for the return of The Midnight Society with the all-new Are You Afraid of the Dark? three-part limited series event. Based on the ‘90s kids’ cult classic, and reimagined for a new generation, part one of Are You Afraid of the Dark? will debut on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7:00 p.m. (ET/PT), with parts two and three to follow Oct. 18, and Oct. 25, respectively.

Across the three hour-long episodes, Are You Afraid of the Dark? will follow members of an entirely new Midnight Society, who tell a terrifying tale of the Carnival of Doom and its evil ringmaster Mr. Tophat, only to witness the shocking story come frightfully to life. In the just-released trailer, viewers meet the new members of the Midnight Society, get a glimpse at the uncertainty that awaits and prepare for an adventure beyond their wildest nightmares.

The new members of the Midnight Society are: Rachel, played by Lyliana Wray (Top Gun: Maverick); Gavin, played by Sam Ashe Arnold (Best.Worst.Weekend.Ever.); Akiko, played by Miya Cech (Rim of the World, Always Be My Maybe); Graham, played by Jeremy Taylor (IT: Chapter Two, Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween); and Louise, played by Tamara Smart (Artemis Fowl, The Worst Witch). The Carnival of Doom’s ringmaster, Mr. Tophat, is played by Rafael Casal (Blindspotting).

Are You Afraid of the Dark? is produced by ACE Entertainment (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, The Perfect Date) with ACE founder Matt Kaplan and Spencer Berman serving as executive producers. Nickelodeon is bringing the legendary UK hit game show The Crystal Maze to the U.S. in an all-new version, co-produced by Bunim/Murray Productions (The Real World, The Challenge, Born This Way) and RDF Television (Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, Wife Swap, Shipwrecked), all under the Banijay Group. A longtime staple of British pop culture and family entertainment, The Crystal Maze--considered the forerunner to the current escape room craze--is a competitive challenge featuring a family team who must utilize physical and mental skills to successfully navigate an elaborate labyrinth of four giant and immersive themed zones. Guiding teams through each challenge and adventure around the Crystal Maze will be Maze Master Adam Conover, a comic famed for his work on College Humour, TV series Adam Ruins Everything, and Netflix's BoJack Horseman.


Production on the new series (10 one-hour episodes) took place on the show's original set located at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol, England, earlier this summer. The series premiere will be announced at a later date.

Nickelodeon’s version of The Crystal Maze will feature a team of family members tackling a range of challenges in zones collectively known as The Crystal Maze. Each successful game is rewarded with a ‘time crystal’ that equals five seconds in the centerpiece Crystal Dome. The adventure culminates in a spectacular finale, as the team enters the Dome to grab a cash prize as it flies around them during a dramatic clock countdown.

A current ratings smash in the UK, The Crystal Maze has been a beloved family and cult favorite since the mid ‘90s, with the current global popularity of the escape room phenomena reigniting interest further. The show was recently rebooted to great success with celebrity, charity and family seasons in UK, Australia and beyond.

Devised by Jacques Antoine, the UK version of The Crystal Maze was originally hosted by Richard O'Brien (Rocky Horror), followed by Ed Tudor-Pole. The reboot was originally presented by Stephen Merchant (for Stand Up To Cancer), and currently by Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd, Travel Man) with his "hand." The show's theme song is the legendary "Force Field", below. The show is currently filmed at The Bottle Yard Studios in Bristol.

Channel 4’s rebooting of iconic 1990s gameshow The Crystal Maze was difficult enough, but US children’s network Nickelodeon has taken it one step further by remaking it as a kids’ show. Clive Whittingham reports.

Mention The Crystal Maze to Brits of a certain generation and watch them go all misty eyed. The show, a sort of UK take on French format Fort Boyard, aired for six seasons on commercially funded public broadcaster Channel 4 in the 1990s and was staple viewing for a generation of kids, young adults and families.

Remaking the show for a modern audience, as C4 and the show’s producer, Banijay-owned RDF Television, have done successfully in recent years, came with two main challenges. The first was the set.

For the uninitiated, The Crystal Maze sees a team of five or six contestants tackle physical, mental or mystery games divided between four themed zones: Aztec, Industrial, Future and a fourth that has rotated through Medieval, Underwater, Eastern and others. Successfully completing the games in the allotted time wins the team crystals, which in turn win the team five seconds of time in a giant dome where they must collect 100 gold tokens being wafted around by giant fans to claim the grand prize.

The original set was gargantuan and notorious. Health and safety was not a primary concern and a 50ft rat-infested river snaked through the middle of it. Persuading a broadcaster to build another was always going to be a big obstacle to a remake.

“It was April 2011 and I was trying to come up with a big gameshow idea,” says RDF’s Neale Simpson, who grew up adoring the original version of the show and now struggles to keep a lid on his enthusiasm at executive producing the remake for C4. “I came up with one idea I was excited about but then as I was pitching it to my boss I realised it was just a crap knock-off of The Crystal Maze.

“I then tried to find out who had the rights and it turned out Adventure Line Productions, our Banijay sister company, had them and didn’t even realise. It was some legal technicality through ownership of Fort Boyard. I spent the next six years trying to bring it back, but the big thing was saying to broadcasters, ‘If you want to try this show and see if it works again you’ve got to build a 32,000sq ft set. That’s expensive and a big risk.”

Several things fell into place to make it possible. In London, a group almost as enthusiastic about the original show as Simpson were crowd-funded to build their own version of the original set for the general public to pay to play. The Islington-based Crystal Maze LIVE Experience has been a runaway success, booked out for months.

Meanwhile, Channel 4 started bringing together a collection of rebooted formats and twists on its existing shows for a special Stand Up To Cancer charity fundraising night. Simpson, and C4, saw an opportunity for a one-off and comedian Stephen Merchant agreed to host. So far, so simple. And then…

“It was hell,” Simpson recalls. “The Crystal Maze LIVE Experience was sold out six months in advance, bar one down day in October on a Thursday. They’d sold tickets to 23.00 the night before, Thursday was clear, then at 12.30 on the Friday it opened again to the public. We had to get in at 23.00, rig the cabling and cameras overnight and park a mobile gallery truck in the street. We rehearsed in the morning and had to film the whole thing in a day. Then, at 23.00 that night, we had to derig everything and have it ready to hand back to the public on the Friday. I’m there pushing a Henry Hoover around at three in the morning. I didn’t sleep for 36 hours.

“We finished the show on Thursday, it aired on Sunday. We had a crazy edit period. We delivered it 12 hours before it went on air. Then I woke up to the overnights and 4.5 million people had watched it. I sat in a café crying. Tom Beck, the commissioner at Channel 4, phoned up straight away and said, ‘Obviously we’re doing more then.’”

A vast space at Bristol’s Bottle Yard Studios has been commandeered and turned into a new maze, with up to 30 new games designed for each season of the show by a team led by producer Anna Kid. “She’s a nutter,” Simpson says. “Anna loves the show, she came in for a job interview here with a dossier on The Crystal Maze and bossed us in a way where I don’t think we were allowed not to hire her. She’s brought in a team of extraordinary people who come up with 100 concepts for every series and we have to whittle them down to things we can feasibly do.”

Then, in June this year, a new challenge. US kids’ net Nickelodeon picked up the rights to remake the show in the States as part of a push into unscripted and formats under head of unscripted Rob Bagshaw, which you can read more about in Schedule Watch. The 10-parter, which RDF is working on in Bristol with Bunim/Murray, is not only the first time the show has travelled outside the UK, but the first time it has been turned into a kids’ show, although it has always skewed far younger than its primetime slot on C4 usually does.

The first big change has been the make-up of the teams, which are now family units of five, comprising parents and kids. The C4 show involves groups of friends but originally featured teams of complete strangers brought together on the day.

“The decision we made when we first brought the show back was that it’s stronger when the team is six people who know each other,” Simpson says. “What’s wonderful when you turn that into parents playing with their kids is the parents always want the kids to do well and cheer them on no matter what, whereas the children are embarrassed, disgusted and appalled by their parents not performing well and start berating them and blaming them.

“As we’ve filmed 45 episodes in the UK we’ve tried and tested a lot of games and we’re able to cherry-pick the ones we think will best suit children and adults being able to play. The biggest difference is allowing the kids a bit more time.”

The second main issue with rebooting The Crystal Maze, other than building the set, is who you get to host it. The original C4 show was all about Rocky Horror Picture Show’s Richard O’Brien, who made the Maze Master role his own and was the physical embodiment of the show. The series was, with the best will in the world, never the same in seasons five and six with Ed Tudor-Pole in the role, although O’Brien’s exit at the end of season four on a Harley Davidson was quite a moment.

Comedian and actor Richard Ayoade has made a decent fist of reprising the role for the adult C4 version, but finding the right person to guide families, including young children, through the experience was always going to be tough. Nickelodeon has gone for comic Adam Conover, famed for his work on College Humour and TV series Adam Ruins Everything.

“You’re a Maze Master, you’re not a gameshow host, it’s a mad and eccentric role,” says Simpson. “Adam’s take has been like Willy Wonka in his chocolate factory – it’s his maze, he’s created all the games and he’s thrilled somebody has come to play with him for the day. Like Willy Wonka, there’s also a mischievous side to it, a bit of an edge – sometimes the kids lose, sometimes they get locked in.

“The notes we were flagging to Nick early on was you can’t have a host on autocue. It has to be somebody who has funny bones, a sharp mind and will react to what unfolds in front of them. There are lots of gags we can script but the best way to attack the show is to exploit the story of the team and play off the characters and their successes and failures as they go.”

For Gil Goldschein, chairman and CEO of Bunim/Murray, Nick commissioning the show, and pushing into unscripted in general, at a time when family-skewing formats like The Masked Singer are big business, vindicates the move into younger demographics his company made several years ago.

“I started a kids and family division here a few years ago and we have been developing specifically for kids and family,” he says. “Quite honestly I feel like it was there before the market was there; we got pilots away but nothing to series. Now, finally, the market is leaning into that – digital platforms, kids and family networks, and mainstream broadcast as well.

“It was always an underserved audience. Unscripted has been growing tremendously in the US and it was surprising that nobody was producing and developing unscripted for kids. I’m happy that finally the market has caught up. We’ve got several projects across platforms we’re developing and happy to be able to take an iconic series like Crystal Maze and adapt it for the US.

“I hope it can turn in other directions. The first you will see are some of the gameshows and music formatted shows but there’s other opportunities in the space. We’re developing and it’s an area you will see grow over the next few years.”

SCHEDULE WATCH ALERT: US childen’s network Nickelodeon is looking to expand its unscripted formats slate. Clive Whittingham reports.

Think of Nickelodeon and you’re probably most likely to associate it with animated hits such as SpongeBob SquarePants, which is now in its 20th year. Where does the time go?

But in January, the network hired Rob Bagshaw as head of unscripted and he is now involved in searching for formats designed to broaden the network’s appeal into co-viewing.

Bagshaw’s arrival followed that of Brian Robbins, the co-founder of AwesomenessTV and former president of Viacom-owned Paramount Players, as president of the channel. He replaced Cyma Zarghami, who left in June last year.

Bagshaw helped create shows such as RuPaul’s Drag Race and Paradise Hotel and joined Nick having most recently served as exec producer on YouTube series If I Could Tell You Just One Thing. He was previously senior VP and head of Bunim/Murray Productions’ New York unit and worked at BBC Worldwide Productions (now BBC Studios) and UK prodco Mentorn Media.

He has arrived to bolster the unscripted and formats slate, which isn’t a complete departure for a channel that has housed the Double Dare format in the US on and off since 1986, but is a change of tack from recent years.

“Nick has a history of unscripted, but of course the bedrock of the channel is animation and scripted,” says Bagshaw. “In the last few years the network hasn’t had a lot of unscripted and the new president, Brian Robbins, picked up on this. Our young audience are watching unscripted hits on other networks, streamers and platforms like YouTube. We want to give them these sorts of shows ourselves: original content through the Nick lens.”

Bagshaw’s arrival and challenge comes at a time when family-skewing formats are all the rage. He points to shows like America’s Got Talent, Dancing With The Stars, America Ninja Warrior, Ellen’s Game of Games, The Voice and Masked Singer as examples of mainstream shows that encourage co-viewing.

“They’re all family shows. That wasn’t traditionally trendy but now they’re back,” Bagshaw says. “I’m looking at the Nick catalogue, formats being pitched to me, original ideas and existing formats from other countries and networks. We’re a kids’ network but we’re looking to broaden the demo into co-viewing, which means parents and kids watch together but also adults watch the shows as well.”

The first eye-catching commission in that vein was the first US remake of classic UK format The Crystal Maze, which aired for six hugely popular seasons in primetime on Channel 4 in the 1990s and was recently rebooted by the network after a one-off charity show drew in excess of four million viewers.

Nick has bought 10-episodes initially, produced by Bunim/Murray and the show’s UK producer, RDF Television, and filmed at its UK studio in Bristol. Nick has tweaked the format slightly, so the teams are made up of family members and a mixture of adults and kids.

“Co-viewing shows are tricky. You don’t want to dilute the power of the entertainment or story for the younger age group and dumb things down. But kids are our core audience, so it has to work for them first and then bring everybody else in,” Bagshaw says. “We’re looking for new shows – and the Crystal Maze is a new show for America – that have family appeal. We’re looking for big, physical gameshows as well.

“A lot of ideas I’ve been pitched were adult versus child or family versus family. The great thing about Crystal Maze is it’s family versus the show, family versus the house. They play together and succeed or fail as a family, not in conflict with another human. That’s a good message.”

Reality competition format America’s Most Musical Family debuts this autumn

Christmas-themed competition show Top Elf has also been greenlit and hidden-camera comedy prank show The Substitute, where celebrities are disguised and sent into classrooms as supply teachers, has been taken to series after a successful pilot on April Fool’s Day. Where exactly to schedule these original shows is, of course, different for a kids’ network compared with a mainstream broadcaster.

“Primetime for kids is a different thing,” Bagshaw says. “We talk about ideas first, whether it’s a good idea for our audience and if we’re all signed up to do it. The creative leaders, marketing, outreach, finance – when we sign up for a new show everybody has to be on board with it. When we did The Substitute we aired it at 14.00, 16.00 and 20.00.

“We bought Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? and tweaked the format to put kids at the centre of the action. In all our new shows the kids drive the narrative and are in charge of their own fate. We aired that stripped across a week and then it went to weeklies.” Nickelodeon’s version launched on Monday June 10.

Another newcomer is reality competition format America’s Most Musical Family, which launches this autumn in a run of 12 episodes plus a 30’ special. It will air weekly on an evening the channel is trying to build into an unscripted rendez-vous, says Bagshaw.


Nick tweaked the Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader? format in favour of kids

The series sees 30 American families compete on stage to win a US$250,000 prize and a recording contract with Republic Records. It is produced by Industrial Media and exec-produced by Eli Holzman and Aaron Saidman (Undercover Boss, So You Think You Can Dance), Claire Kosloff and Jeff Boggs (Nashville Star, Who Will Rock You?) along with Grammy-winner Ciara and Republic Records. Bagshaw and VP of unscripted Paul Medford are exec producing for Nickelodeon.

Bagshaw is clear about the formats he wants, and doesn’t want, to be pitched. He advises producers to “put themselves in the shoes of the audience and think about ideas through the lens of a young audience.”

“I’m not interested in dumbed-down shows or derivative versions of what our audience is watching elsewhere. The tone is important,” he says. “Our kids love comedy and music so they are priorities for us, and if a new idea has elements of those, then great. We’re looking in the pet space – they’re an important member of the family to kids – and we’re looking at cooking because they love that.

“Sometimes I feel producers can come in with a very serious idea that either skews too junior or is too earnest. We are doing some serious content. There is a history of reflecting cultural issues and world events because our audience wants to be part of that conversation and they pick up on things that grown-ups are talking about, so we don’t want to shy away from that. The danger is it becomes too preachy. We are still a cool-kid network – a Nick kid is a cool kid. We’re not like some of the other kids’ networks and we’re also not PBS.”

So, yes to teachable moments within entertainment but, Bagshaw advises, Nickelodeon doesn’t want to be an education service.

“Kids don’t want to watch that particularly when they’re out of school. We still want to have a good time and we are a trusted brand and home for families looking to get content for their kids. Trusted can sometimes mean safe and safe can sometimes mean soft, and nobody wants soft television,” he says.

Viacom-owed US children’s network Nickelodeon is looking to increase the number of co-viewing family formats in its schedule following its acquisition of The Crystal Maze and is seeking pitches.

The broadcaster picked up [1] classic UK gameshow format The Crystal Maze earlier this year and is currently working on a 10×60’ version with teams made up of families, produced by US-based Bunim Murray and the show’s UK producer, RDF Television.

The show is one of the first projects from former BBC exec Rob Bagshaw, who joined Nick [2] at the turn of the year as executive VP of unscripted, reporting to the network’s new president, Brian Robbins, who arrived [3] at the end of 2018.

Speaking to C21 at Bottle Yard Studios in the UK city of Bristol, where both the recent Channel 4 reboot of the show and the Nick version are filmed, Bagshaw said the commission was part of a concerted push into unscripted formats for the channel as it looks to broaden its core kids audience into co-viewing.

The Crystal Maze was attractive, he said, because the contestants play together as a team against the game, rather than against other humans, which made it a perfect show for a kids’ network.

“A lot of the new ideas I’ve been pitched have been adult versus child, or family versus family, and the great thing about The Crystal Maze is it’s the family versus the house. They succeed and fail together as a family, and it’s not a conflict with another human which is a good message,” he said.

Berlin - More music, more stars, more slime: Nickelodeon Germany's (Deutschland) legendary Nickelodeon SlimeFest returned to Germany for a second year! Stars rocked the SlimeFest stage over three days at Movie Park Germany, home of Nickland, where they sang, danced, rapped, and of course, got slimed, providing kids with lots of fun and entertainment!


"I had a lot of fun celebrating with the kids again and, of course, slimming them all," said Pietro Lombardi, who was on the SlimeFest stage for the second time. Pietro, die Lochis and Mike Singer surprised their fans with a very special slime guitar performance. In the end every child was completely slimed. While the kids in the Slime-Area were slimed by their favorite stars, the parents could party from the stands.

Nickelodeon SlimeFest 2019's star-studded line-up left no wish unfulfilled: In addition to the well-known headliners, kids were entertained by Iggi Kelly, Enyadres, Daniele Negroni and more, who bathed in the green slime with them. Nicht nur die Kinder hatten ihren Spaß, auch die Lochis, Mike Singer und Pietro Lombardi kamen auf ihre Kosten.

“Es hat mir wieder riesigen Spaß gemacht mit den Kindern zu feiern und sie natürlich vollzuslimen“, so Pietro Lombardi, der bereits zum zweiten Mal auf der SlimeFest Bühne stand. Pietro, die Lochis und Mike Singer überraschten ihre Fans mit einer ganz speziellen Slime-Gitarren-Einlage. Am Ende war wirklich jedes Kind komplett geslimed. Während die Kinder in der Slime-Area von ihren Lieblings-Stars geslimed wurden, konnten die Eltern von der Tribüne aus mitfeiern.

Bei diesem Line-Up blieb kein Wunsch unerfüllt: Neben den bekannten Headlinern wurden die Kids von Iggi Kelly, Enyadres und Daniele Negroni unterhalten und durften sogar mit ihnen zusammen im grünen Slime baden. Daneben haben vor allem die internationalen Stars für ordentlich Aufsehen gesorgt: Bars and Melody und Isac Elliot brachten die Mädchen-Herzen zum Schmelzen und Nickelodeon-Liebling Kira Kosarin feierte beim Nickelodeon SlimeFest 2019 ihr Deutschland-Debüt.

Bottrop [ENA] Sonntag der 15.09.2019 kurz vor 15:00 Uhr. Mitten im Movie Park Germany findet man heute nicht an den Achterbahnen die längste Warteschlange, sondern am Eingang zur Stunt Area, in der die Show „Crazy Cops New York“ aufgeführt wird. Das Nickelodeon Slime Fest lockt die Zuschauer.

Heute stehen nicht die Stuntmen im Mittelpunkt, sondern der Grüne Nickelodeon Slime. Eingeslimet werden ist bei Nickelodeon ein Zeichen der Anerkennung . Doch dieses Privileg bleibt den Künstlern und Kids vorbehalten. Die Erwachsenen und Kinder unter 8 Jahren müssen auf der Tribüne Platz nehmen. Die „Slime Area“ vor der Bühne ist für die Nickelodeon Zielgruppe reserviert. Zum ersten Mal fand das Nickelodeon Slime Fest im Movie Park Germany in Bottrop statt. Vom 13. – 15.9. wurden die Kids eingeschleimt und ihre Lieblingsstars standen für sie auf der Bühne.

Die Show wird mit einer Choreographie der Tanzgruppe „Team Recycled“ eröffnet. Die Tänzer und der Cast der Nickelodeon Sendung „Spotlight“ bringen zwischen den Künstlern Schwung auf die Bühne. Den musikalischen Auftakt macht Iggy Kelly. Der Sohn von Patricia Kelly aus der bekannten Kelly Family gab eine Mischung aus Coversong und eigenen Liedern zum besten und ließ es sich selbstverständlich nicht nehmen inmitten der Zuschauer die Slime-Attacke mit zu machen.

Internationale Sänger auf Deutschlandkurs

Mit Kira Kosarin und Isac Elliot standen gleich 2 internationale Künstler auf der Bühne. Die 21-jährige Kira spielte von 2013 – 2018 die Rolle der Phoebe Thunderman in der Nickelodeon Serie „Die Thundermans“. Die Amerikanerin veröffentlichte im Januar ihr aktuelle Single „Vinyl“. Der mittlerweile 18-jährige Isac Elliot startete seine Karriere in Finnland ebenfalls als Kinderstar. Bereits mit 12 Jahren landete sein Debutalbum auf Platz 1 der finnischen Charts. Seine aktuelle Single „Waiting Game“ wurde seit seiner Veröffentlichung am 16.08.2019 bereits über 1,5 Millionen Mal auf Spotify gestreamt.

Lombardi sorgt für Kreischalarm

Das Highlight und gleichzeitig auch den Abschluss bildete Pietro Lombardi. Bei dem Auftritt des sympathischen Sängers und DSDS-Juroren stieg das Kreisch-O-Meter bis zum Anschlag. Mit einer Akustikversion von „Phänomenal“ zeigte er eine gefühlvolle Seite um gleich darauf wieder Stimmung zu machen. Neben seinen aktuellen Songs sang er auch seine erste Single „Call my name“ mit der Lombardi 2011 im Finale DSDS gewann. Selbstverständlich ließ es sich Pietro, der 2020 auf Deutschland Tour geht, nicht nehmen seine jungen Fans mit der Slime Gitarre ordentlich voll zu slimen.

Chica vampiro follows the story of Daisy O'Brian (Greeicy Rendón), a normal girl who dreams of a singing career in musical comedy. However, her parents are vampires, and as per her family tradition, the decision on whether to become a vampire or not is taken when one turns 16. When she turn sixteen, Daisy decides to stay human to live next to her love, Max De La Torre (Santiago Talledo), who is her neighbor and classmate.

However, that very same day, a fatal accident changes Daisy's life forever. The doctor tells her parents, Ulises O'Brian (Juan Pablo Obregón) and Ana McLaren (Jacqueline Arenal), that she is not going to make it. So, to save her, her parents decide to bite Daisy, turning her into a vampire, making her younger brother, Vicente (Erick Torres), the only mortal in the family. Nickelodeon Italy (Italia) gave viewers a sneak-peek of Team Jay, a brand-new CG-animated series following the adventures of Jay, the proud, mythical and funny zebra with a pattern of black, white and gold and the official team mascot of Juventus F.C.! Joining Jay on his adventures are Matteo, who has a solution for every problem that arises, and Cami, an excellent soccer player.


Nickelodeon Italia aired the first episode of Team Jay on Wednesday 26th June 2019 at 20:50, following an encore of Nickelodeon's SlimeFest 2019 highlights special. Following the sneak-peek, the series is expected to fully premiere in September 2019.

Update (13/9) - Nick Jr. Italia will fully premiere Team Jay on Monday 23rd September 2019 at 19.00! To celebrate, Nickelodeon Italia will host a special preview of the first three episodes of Nickelodeon Italia on Sunday 22nd September 2019 at 16:00 in the "area kids" area of FeST, il Festival delle Serie TV!



Nickelodeon also treated attendees to Nickelodeon SlimeFest 2019 at Mirabilandia on Saturday 15th June 2019 to a super preview of the show.


Team Jay is produced by Sunrise Productions (Munki and Trunk, Jungle Beat, The Explorers), who created the mascot for Juventus Football Club in 2015. Jay taps into the deep history of Italy’s oldest club, while still being fresh and exciting to Juventus’s youngest supporters. The Cape Town, South Africa-based animation studio has previously produced one-off spots inspired by the character.

Dan Balaam, a Freelance Writer & Creative, serves as a writer on the series.

Team Jay is the latest collaboration between Nickelodeon Italia and Juventus F.C., following the launch of a capsule collection inspired by SpongeBob SquarePants and the football team in 2018.

FeST: Il programma completo del Festival delle Serie TV

L'evento si terrà alla Triennale di Milano dal 20 al 22 settembre: tra gli eventi in calendario, l'anteprima di Euphoria.

Dal 20 al 22 settembre la Triennale di Milano ospiterà la seconda edizione di FeST, il Festival delle Serie TV. L'evento, che si inserisce nel calendario della Movie Week, kermesse culturale che promuove il mondo del cinema e dell'audiovisivo, vedrà riuniti i principali player della filiera audiovisiva - Amazon Prime Video, De Agostini Editore, Discovery, Fox Networks Group Italy, Mediaset, Netflix, Rai Fiction, Sky, Turner e Viacom Italia, che animeranno le giornate con incontri, eventi e proiezioni in anteprima, tra cui quelle di Euphoria, Made in Italy e Doom Patrol.

Saranno presenti anche tantissimo ospiti del cinema e della televisione italiana, tra cui Marco Bocci, Margherita Buy, Nino Frassica, Fiammetta Cicogna, Lino Guanciale, Daniele Liotti, Rocío Muños Morales, Alice Pagani, Vittoria Puccini, Giorgio Tirabassi, il cast di #RICCANZA DELUXE fino a nuovi talenti emergenti, tra cui Antonio Dikele Di Stefano, Greta Ferro e Neva Leoni. Il programma didattico, costruito in collaborazione con ALMED, la Scuola di Studi Superiori dell'Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, ha come finalità il perfezionamento di soggetti di serie preesistenti con l’obiettivo di poterli presentare ai più grandi nomi della filiera seriale televisiva in un preciso momento, il cosiddetto «pitch», che avrà luogo una volta compiuto il percorso con i docenti. I produttori e i broadcaster a cui verranno presentati i progetti selezionati sono Cattleya, Fabula Pictures, Fox, Lux Vide, Netflix, Publispei e Sky.

Nel giardino, invece, sarà allestita una ludoteca a tema serie tv (powered by Pendragon e a cura del giornalista ed esperto Lorenzo Fantoni), che ospiterà grandi e piccoli e in cui sarà possibile giocare in esclusiva per la prima volta in Italia il gioco da tavolo di Rick & Morty.


Tra le collaborazioni che hanno dato vita a FeST - Il Festival delle Serie Tv, ideato dai giornalisti Marina Pierri e Giorgio Viaro e con il patrocinio del Comune di Milano, ci sono Milano Film Festival, Bookcity e Music Week, APA, ALMED Alta Scuola in Media Comunicazione e Spettacolo e il Master in International Screenwriting and Production, Scuola di Studi Superiori dell’Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore di Milano, DETECt, Diversity e Proxima Milano.

Il tema scelto per questa seconda edizione di FeST - Il Festival delle Serie Tv è “Breaking Stereotypes”, e ha l'obiettivo di raccontare le innovazioni del linguaggio seriale con particolare accento sulla rappresentazione che combatte gli stereotipi. Nel farlo si avvarrà a tutto campo della partnership con la no profit Diversity, fondata da Francesca Vecchioni, impegnata ogni giorno nel diffondere la cultura dell’inclusione favorendo una visione del mondo che consideri la molteplicità e le differenze come valori e risorse preziose per le persone e le aziende.

Da lunedì 23 settembre Fy, la mascotte della Juventus, lascia lo Stadium e diventa protagonista di una nuova serie animata. E noi di Focus Junior siamo andati a Torino per il lancio inaugurale...


È sempre in movimento, ha tre stelle sul petto ed ama la vita all'aria aperta. È Jay, l'esuberante mascotte della Juventus che ora, grazie a Nickelodeon, oltrepassa i confini dello stadio per diventare una vera star della TV per ragazzi.

La serie s'intitola Team Jay ed esordirà lunedì 23 settembre alle 19.00 su NickJr (canale 603 di Sky) con un appuntamento speciale di quattro episodi e sarà incentrata proprio sulla velocissima zebra dal cuore d'oro che adora il calcio e passa le giornate con i suoi simpatici compagni d'avventura: Matteo, Cami, lo scoiattolo volante Wushu e Duke il criceto. Nel corso delle varie puntate, questo speciale team supererà ogni ostacolo grazie al potere dell'amicizia e al gioco di squadra, essenziale per raggiungere i traguardi più complicati, sia nello sport che nella vita.

UNA FESTA BIANCONERA

La nuova serie è stata presentata giovedì 19 settembre all'interno del modernissimo Juventus Stadium, casa della Vecchia Signora pluricampione d'Italia, e la Redazione di Focus Junior non ha voluto mancare l'occasione di essere presente per dare uno sguardo ravvicinato all'esclusivo evento.

Nell'ala Est dello Stadium infatti, Juventus e Nickelodeon hanno allestito una mini-città bianconera - con giochi, merende e stand di make-up - in cui circa 150 bambini hanno potuto assistere alla proiezione dei primi episodi di Team Jay insieme alla stessa mascotte in "carne e zoccoli".

Alla festa hanno partecipato anche le altre stelle delle produzioni Nickelodeon (Spongebob, Tartarughe Ninja, Paw Patrol ecc...) e i giocatori della Juve Leonardo Bonucci, Juan Cuadrado, Miralem Pjanic e Blaise Matuidi. Insomma, un bel pomeriggio, nonostante qualche muso lungo tra i ragazzi per le difficoltà ad avvicinare i "blindatissimi" campioni bianconeri per strappare un autografo o una foto ricordo.

Ora però il campo è tutto di Jay, che è pronto ad entrare nel cuore dei giovani juventini - e non solo - galoppando su NickJr dal lunedì al venerdì, sempre alle 19.

Conoscete Jay? Dal 2015 questa simpatica zebra è il character della squadra della Juventus e rappresenta i bianconeri in tutte le attività legate al target kids. Infatti, Jay intrattiene i piccoli tifosi ogni domenica, quando la Juventus gioca in casa, accogliendoli presso il settore est dell’Allianz Stadium, dove si trova la sua casa, un luogo di gioco per bambini e famiglie.
