'Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Heads to China, the Middle East and Albania | MIPCOM 2018

Viacom International Studios (VIS) has inked multiple deals for three of its biggest titles at MIPCOM 2018, including Nickelodeon’s freshly launched Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!

The new iteration in the iconic Ninja Turtles franchise was licensed to China’s iQiyi, MBC in the Middle East and Albania’s Digitalb. Rise of the TMNT made its world debut on Monday 17th September 2018 on Nickelodeon USA, and is now rolling out globally across Nickelodeon's channels and branded blocks in 170+ countries and territories.

Comedy Central Roast of Bruce Willis has been acquired by free-to-air (FTA) Russian broadcaster TNT, Australia’s Foxtel, Ananey Communications in Israel and Finland’s Sanoma Media.

The game-show format True Love or True Lies? was picked up by the Nordic Entertainment Group in Finland and Denmark.

Ahead of MIPJunior 2018, Mattel has announced a raft of new international broadcast partnerships for Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures!, as UK ratings surge 40%!


Mattel has secured a raft of new international broadcast partnerships for Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! (26 x 11 episodes), the 22nd season of its hit show, Thomas & Friends!

The revamped show, which had its world premiere at MIPJunior one year ago and launched to consumers this September on Nickelodeon's Nick Jr. in the US, and on Channel 5's Milkshake! in the UK, has reported an increase in ratings of over 40 per cent amongst kids in the UK! (BARB, 3rd Sept- 16th Sept Weekdays)

According to Mattel, this "demonstrates the popularity of the new show and the changes to the content." The revamped content includes a more multicultural and gender-balanced ‘Steam Team’ line-up of core characters as well as seeing Thomas leaving Sodor for the first time to travel around the world.

Commenting on the performance on Milkshake! Louise Bucknole, Vice President (VP) Programming VIMN Kids UK & Ireland, said: “We are delighted that the new adventures of Thomas & Friends has captured the imagination of Milkshake! viewers. The exciting makeover of this iconic heritage show has resonated with British kids and their families.”

Other international broadcasters to join the tracks of Thomas & Friends include Super RTL (Germany), Cartoonito (Italy), Minimini (Poland), RTL Telekids (Netherlands), VTM Kzoom (Belgium), AMC Minimax (Eastern Europe), Hop! (Israel), and Channel One (Russia).

Additionally, Televisa (Mexico), TV Cultura (Brazil), ABC (Australia) and Corus Entertainment’s Treehouse Network (Canada) have also signed up the new series of the show.

Nickelodeon International Acquires 'Kid-E-Cats' Season Two | MIPCOM

French sales house APC Kids, the children’s entertainment distribution company of boutique co-producer and distributor About Premium Content (APC), has sold the second season of Kid-E-Cats to Nickelodeon International!


The new 52 x 5’ animated episodes will be shown on Nick Jr.’s international channels that reach more than 170 countries including UK, India, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Greece, Indonesia and Vietnam.

The series is based on an original Russian series produced by CTC Media and Studio Metrafilms and is the second-best performing pre-school series in Russia. The third season is currently in production following a commission from CTC last year, which launched its first children’s channel, CTC Kids, earlier this year.

The show tells the story of three kittens: Cookie, Pudding and their kid sister Candy who are forever ready to jump into action with endless enthusiasm and energy. Their imagination also knows no bounds, and these kitties are capable of the most absurdly funny problem-solving suggestions. Through life’s little lessons, they learn to look before they leap – well, sometimes!

APC Kids Managing Director (MD) Lionel Marty said, “We are thrilled that Viacom International has committed to the second season of Kid-E-Cats. The series resonates with kids globally and it’s exciting that all over the world children will be able to enjoy the further adventures of Cookie, Pudding and Candy!”

‘Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Co-Producer on What Makes New Series Unexpected Yet Familiar

The Ninja Turtles are back in a brand-new animated iteration. Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles explores the mystical side of the iconic brothers in green, as they journey deep below the sewers and discover a magical new realm.


Producer Ant Ward (who also worked on the previous series, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) was tasked with creating this new Turtles universe (or sewer system, if you will). He wanted Rise to stand on its own two feet, not simply revisit familiar territory in a way that would be a “disservice” to the fans and creators of the original. “We thought, ‘what are we going to do that reinvents the wheel?’” Ward explained to Newsweek. “So almost every decision we made was with that in mind. We want it to be fun, unexpected and familiar.”

This time around, the brothers have a different motivation to bring them above the streets. “They've definitely adopted the weapons and took up the mantle of being ninjas almost out of boredom, than heroism,” said Ward. The turtles are also more clearly teens this time around.

“They’re kids. They haven’t gotten that sense of responsibility,” Ward explained. “They kind of are hinting at it,” as they learn how their best strengths can actually make a difference for the world.

Rise of the TMNT makes a huge format change as well, dropping down to 11 minutes per episode from the traditional 22. Individually, the episodes work as standalones, with a classic “Monster of the Week” flavor. But as the full season unfolds, fans can expect to see the characters grow and change in ways that depart significantly from the original series. “You’re going to walk away and you’re going to realize that these are not the same brothers,” says Ward. “It’s really exciting to tell this story.”

A new show and new heroes require some new enemies. Say farewell to Shredder, as Rise of the TMNT introduces a new baddie named Baron Draxum (voiced by John Cena). He’s here to protect all the mutants, but what does that mean for humankind and the Turtles?

The Turtles will have their hands full with Baron and a variety of other mutants, including one known as Meat Sweats. (You read that right, he’s a celebrity chef voiced by John Rotten Lydon who transformed into a pig after a run-in with some Ooze.) “Meat Sweats is awesome because he has the ability to absorb other mutants’ powers,” Ward explained.

Nickelodeon, BBC, Cartoon Network Gaze Into the Future of TV at MipJunior 2018 [Updated] | MIPCOM

CANNES — “Never predict, especially about the future,” the saying goes. Three of MipJunior 2018’s key speakers and kids industry players – from Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and the BBC – took that to heart on Cannes’ Saturday afternoon when addressing the panel subject, “View from the Top: Gazing into the Future of Kids Media.” Rather than addressing where the business is headed – if they knew, they’d have ankled their jobs – Nickelodeon’s Jules Borkent, the BBC’s Jackie Edwards and Adina Pitt at Cartoon Network drilled down on the major changes and challenges affecting where the kids media business is today. Here are five insights:

1. THE NEW NAME OF THE GAME: PARTNERING

What has changed in the last couple of years? asked Borkent, Nickelodeon Senior Vice President (SVP), Global Acquisitions and International Programming. “For us, it’s about figuring out [how to meet] the desire for more and more content than we’re currently producing.” Nickelodeon’s solution: Partnerships, whether on wholly-owned or shared content or acquisitions. These have become “far more forefront on how we deliver content,” he commented. One case to point: Nickelodeon Latin America’s has just gone into production on fantasy fiction musical Club 57, its first co-production with Iginio Straffi’s Rainbow Group in Italy. “We’re working with partners that five years ago we wouldn’t necessarily have,” Borkent said.

2. RETOOLING FRANCHISES

“We’re focused on building brands and franchises,” said Pitt, Vice President (VP), Content Acquisitions & Co-Productions, Cartoon Network & Boomerang US. “That’s not just about looking for new franchises and experimenting, but also staying true to brands,” and re-tooling them, she suggested, instancing Total DramaRama. Created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch for Fresh TV and distributed by Cake Ent., the Canadian animated action comedy series, which bowed on Cartoon Network on Sept. 1, places the characters of Total Drama in an alternate universe ageing them down from teens to toddlers. “It’s an important lesson: Sometimes go back, retool or reimagine the IP you have,” Pitt argued. Nickelodeon has also just done this with the network's recently launched Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a brand-new 2D animated series which premiered Sept. 17 that reimagines the iconic characters from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in a fresh new way.

3. LOCALIZATION – A BOON NOT A BANE

Considering China – “a great opportunity for new collaborations,” said Edwards, head of the BBC children’s acquisitions & independent animation – discussion turned to the ever more global industry. “It is a global industry and I think in the future that will be everybody’s challenge,” said Edwards. She went on: “When everything is everywhere and there is so much content, so many platforms, how are you to stand out? Sometimes localization gives you distinctiveness. As a public service broadcaster, I think that’s going to save us.”

4. LIVE ACTION OPENING UP

For many years, the multi-camera preserve of Nickelodeon and Disney, live action is one program option with ever more opportunity, as recent successes, such as Federation Kids & Family’s Find Me in Paris, which airs on Nickelodeon UK & Ireland illustrates. “We’re testing the waters with telenovelas,” said Borkent. “Live action is opening up more, as viewers are opening up to other cultures.”

5. NEWS OF THE LONGTERM DEMISE OF THE TELLY IS SOMEWHAT EXAGERRATED

According to Nickelodeon research, 65% of kids still regard a TV set as the “easiest model” to access content, Borkent said. “Most children are watching content on TV. They love character and story. Television is a showcase for the very best of it,” said Edwards. She added: “What will happen in the future is that channels will still endure for pre-school, while older kids will search for the same content on VOD platforms and YouTube.” That of course is already a growing reality. A Eurodata TV analysis – referred to during its MipJunior overview on Saturday of new trends in kids entertainment – suggests that daily TV viewing by younger and older children in both the U.S. and U.K. has fallen by pretty much one hour in both countries over 2012-17, from over 2 hours 20 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes for 4-6 year-old kids in the U.K.. The future is now.

Additionally, Viacom's research unit says globally, teens now access content on 13 devices but TV sets remain the preferred screen. Over half say they prefer to watch content on a TV set.

Gazzolo: ‘The hunger for original content gets greater every year’

CANNES — Few executives are better positioned to pinpoint the vast changes sweeping over Latin American TV than Pierluigi Gazzolo, president of Viacom Intl. Media Networks – Americas.

VIMN – America’s purchase of Telefe, Argentina’s highest-rating broadcast network, and then investment in Porta dos Fundos, Brazil’s second-biggest YouTube channel, have been milestones in the region’s recent entertainment business history. But in some ways, rather than a change of direction, the moves merely hastened VIMN down a road it had long been treading. In an extended interview, Gazzolo survey many of the drivers for changes, challenges and strategies VIMN is pursuing in the region. Many are felt by other companies. Few can put them into practice, however, with such scale and force.

Viacom’s purchase of Telefé and indeed Porta dos Fundos is seen as part of a transformation of the company from a distribution to a content creation company…Could you comment?

Pierluigi Gazzolo: Yes, a little bit of history. Viacom’s founder, Sumner Redstone, always talked about content being king. Our principles have always been to own content. Of course, in the ‘80s and the ‘90s we were very strong on the network front. And we were mostly known in Latin America as a network company. But the reality is that we have always made sure that we own at least 90% of our content. We have always had the vision that the industry is ever changing because consumer habits are also always changing. We have always had the ability to not only work as a network company but utilize that content to do VOD packages to MVPDs or to change our windowing strategy depending on a particular intellectual property. For example with kids, I might give a first window to Televisa, because I know it would be better for consumer products, before it comes to pay TV. And now with Viacom International Studios, we have the ability to play with our windowing strategy even further.

So what does Telefe give you?

We bought it for three reasons. To grow in scale and expand on the strategy of owning content to monetize it. Telefé also helps us complete our portfolio. We were mostly owners of either kids content or young adult demographic content coming out of MTV and Comedy Central. But we were lacking prime time content which Telefé, being one of the biggest producers in Argentina, is providing for us. Now our portfolio covers everything from kids to adults. In addition, we also bought Porta dos Fundos, the second largest YouTube channel in Brazil. They are great creators of comedy content which has a lot of universality. The first strategy was to learn from them about the non-linear world, including their amazing ability to sell branded content. Secondly, it is producing thousands of hours of shorts that we can turn into long-form scripted content to add to our portfolio. With Telefé and the majority acquisition of Porta dos Fundos, plus our existing VIMN Americas slate, we were able to create a division we’re now calling Viacom International Studios to become one of the top producers and distributors to third parties of Spanish-originated formats and content around the world.

What have been the immediate consequences of the purchases?

The hunger for original content gets greater every year. Our revenues have increased across the board. In the case of Telefé, the content sales revenues have more than doubled from what they were when we bought them in 2016. In the case of Porta do Fondos, their revenues are five times what they were when we bought them in 2017. In the case of Viacom networks in Latin America – MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon, for example – the original content earnings are almost 20% up.

Is that just from sales or are other factors at work?

When we bought Telefé we reduced the rights given to third parties outside Argentina. We now fully fund almost all of our shows and now monetize them fully, via the International Studios, which also include MTV, Comedy Central, Nickelodeon and Porta dos Fundos. Viacom International Studios Latin America is also increasing production, up to nearly 1000 hours [a year].

With Telefe, in 2018 we produced 80 hours more of long-form content for a total of 800+ hours, mostly scripted, which is a 23% increase from last year. We are producing in total about a hundred hours more between all the networks and Telefé, this year. Of those 100 hours, about 70% to 80% will also air on the network, some of them will go first window for example to a client, either broadcast, OTT or SVOD, or will have joint premieres with other broadcasters from other regions.

What about development?

On top of that – and this is the part that matters when you have a studio in this day and age – we are developing more hours of originals. In other words, we started [at Telefe] with four developments per year – ideas and concepts to shop around to third parties. Now we’re up to eight, so we are doubling the new shows that we are developing and that we are offering to third parties regardless of their networks. So, for example, at the L.A. Screenings last May we presented seven shows. Of these shows only one aired on Telefé, “100 Days to Fall in Love” that has averaged a 45.5% SOV since launch. The rest might air on Telefé or might premiere with a third party, or be produced as an “original” for a third party, or might be done in a different language for a European partner. It’s the studio model. So that’s the new part of this, we’re not only doing content so that we can air on the network and sell it after that. Now we’re making content to maximize it the best way possible regardless of the network.

What market factors are driving the ramp-up in production?

The demand is huge. The entrance of VOD players has encouraged people to consume and [altered] the expectation of consumption and the volume that is required now for consumption. Also, you have advanced MVPDs, pay TV operators which own OTT platforms and are looking to provide content. Could you mention some deals?

With regard to deals closed, with an MVPD partner in Argentina, a big one, Cablevision, we’re going to be airing a format co-produced straight from Comedy Central, “Drunk History” that will air first with them and on Telefe, and then on Comedy Central, and then “Morir de Amor” which is a Telefe show that will premiere on the network weekly but Cablevisión will carry the full series on its OTT platform, Flow. Nickelodeon tween telenovela “Noobees” will be premiering on both Nickelodeon Latin America and the broadcaster RCN in Colombia. And the most recently announced sale of the “100 Days to Fall in Love” format to Mega in Chile.

What about digital platforms?

With Porta dos Fundos, we took their shorts format and created a half-hour show called “Borges,“ about an import export company, that goes broke and to survive creates a YouTube channel making shorts. That has been licensed to Netflix. Viacom International Studios is also negotiating a big SVOD deal in Latin America with VIS and Porta dos Fundos titles in development and new originals.

And outside Latin America?

“Club 57,” which is another Nickelodeon tween telenovela, has been pre-sold to Rainbow in Italy. They’re going to make it Italianesque and Argentina with characters in Italy and in Argentina. It will air on a major broadcaster in Italy and on Nickelodeon in Latin America. Internationally, daily scripted “Amar después de amar” has been re-versioned in Mexico and Middle East and North Africa. Along with “Sres. Papis,” it has discovered a market in the Middle East.

Cathedral City has revamped its kids range with a new licensing deal with Nickelodeon, with the range now containing a 30% less fat ‘Mild Lighter’ cheddar!

From today (10 October), the Dairy Crest brand began rolling out its updated kids’ snacking portfolio, with each SKU featuring Nickelodeon TV characters from programmes targeting the product’s target age group.

Cathedral City’s Nibbles targeting three to four-year-olds now feature PAW Patrol characters; Towers for five to seven-year-olds showcase SpongeBob SquarePants, and Cheese & Toasties aim for the eight to 11-year-old market with new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles imagery.

The relaunch will also see on-pack messaging highlighting the snacks’ source of calcium, high protein and calorie-controlled credentials in response to research conducted by the brand, which found mums wanted to feel confident about making good choices for their families.

“Our research showed parents harbour a sense of guilt for not always having enough time to offer the best snacks to their kids and feel that brands that traditionally communicate to kids tend to push unhealthy options, making them ‘the baddie’ for saying ‘no’,” Anca Lazar, Cathedral City snacking senior brand manager, told The Grocer.

“Our range renovation seeks to address this, with a fun and appealing pack design to engage the end consumer (the child), combined with a great tasting, natural product and an improved nutritional profile, communicated transparently on pack,” she added.

“We’re excited to be partnering with Nickelodeon as we embark on this journey and are confident the new packs will resonate with families, helping capture some of the spend that is currently going into traditional ‘less healthy’ snack categories and recruit the next generation of cheese consumers.”

Dairy Crest has launched a two-year partnered with Nickelodeon to release a new pack design across the company’s children’s snacking range, as well as changing the recipe.

The entire range is now made of 30% less fat “mild lighter” cheese, in response to the PHE Change4Life 100 calorie snacks campaign launched in January this year.

The new packaging will feature characters from some of Nickelodeon’s TV programmes; each product in the range will feature a different character depending on the recommended age for consumption: Nibbles (5x16g, £1.75) will feature Paw Patrol characters for 3-4 year olds, Towers (8x12g, £1.75) will feature Sponge Bob Square Pants characters for 5-7 year olds, and Cheese and Toasties (3x29g, £2) will feature Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters for 8-11 year olds.

Anca Lazar, senior brand manager at Cathedral City Snacking, said: “Snacking is generally considered a minefield for parents with a vast array of choice across multiple categories.

Since 2010, Life Like Touring’s hit production of Nickelodeon’s Dora the Explorer LIVE! Search for the City of Lost Toys, has been entertaining children all over the world.


Having discovered many exotic and exciting new places through the clever solving of riddles, Nickelodeon's beloved heroine Dora the Explorer will now take her adventures to the stage of Resorts World Genting in Malaysia in this captivating production this November!

Debuting Saturday 24th November 2018, the elaborate stage show will run for over 44 shows at the Genting International Showroom until Tuesday 1st January 2019. The touring production arrives at the Genting International Showroom to focus a very vexing problem:

Dora has lost her teddy bear Osito and she needs help to find him!



Sweeping through elaborate sets and rousing musical numbers, Dora must venture through a jungle of obstacles with nothing more than a map, Boots, Backpack, Diego and her other courageous friends to retrieve Osito.

It will not be easy, however, as the sneaky fox Swiper plans to foil her quest at all turns. Engaging the audience through song, dance and problem solving, there is no doubt that Dora will eventually succeed, so she can sing out her catchphrase at the end – We Did It!

Nickelodeon Benelux has once again teamed up with popular YouTube stars for a second season of the networks hit weekly competition series De Viral Fabriek (The Viral Factory), set to premiere at 6:00pm uur on Sunday 7th October 2018 on Nickelodeon Netherlands (Nederland) and Belgium (België; Flanders)! The second season will be presented by Nienke van Dijk and Jasper Publie.


Who doesn't dream of becoming the next big YouTuber, coached along the way by some of today's most popular YouTubers? In Nickelodeon's De Viral Fabriek, eight new teams of young YouTubers will compete with some of the biggest Dutch and Belgian YouTubers!

Following the broadcast of each weeks episode, the battle will continue online, when the contestants place their vlogs on Nickelodeon Nederland's official YouTube channel. Each weeks winner will be determined by the number of likes viewers give each video. The winning kids will then go on to compete against each other in the big live final on Sunday 2nd December 2018, where one lucky winner will win the grand prize: A professional camera package and training from a YouTube professional on how they can build their own successful YouTube channel!

One of the eight teams competing on De Viral Fabriek season two is comprised of Ambachtse Aniek and Ju-lieke, who were selected to compete on the show out from lots of contestant applications.

For the last two weeks, the two young girls from Drechtsteden, in the company of a well-known YouTuber and a Nickelodeon camera crew, we spotted in Drechtsteden. Aniek Groenewout and Ju-lieke Snijders are two enthusiastic vloggers. They continuously film and vlog, but there is still little home-made content produced by them on the internet. Editing the raw film material is something that the girls still find difficult. When Nickelodeon was looking for new contestants for the The Viral Factory season two, the decision to sign up was quickly made. Tijdens de afleveringen volgen we de deelnemers die, onder leiding van hun coach, een video maken met maar één doel: viral gaan! Onder leiding van 8 van de grootste YouTubers van Nederland en België gaan kids de strijd met elkaar aan.

'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' 1990 Movie Film Score Getting First Ever Release with Waxwork Records

COWABUNGA! Waxwork Records has announced its next release will be none other than the original score to 1990 live-action film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!


As any child of the '90s will immediately recall, this marked the first motion picture adaptation of the crime-fighting, pizza-loving heroes in a half shell. And while the film was a huge hit, the complete score has actually never been released on any format (though a various artists soundtrack album featuring none other than MC Hammer did arrive alongside the film), and a complete presentation of DuPrez’ music has long been one of the most highly demanded pieces of TMNT ephemera.

This will now change thanks to Waxwork, which on Friday (October 19) will release the complete score to TMNT by John DuPrez.

The release comes as a collaboration with not only DuPrez, but also TMNT co-creator Kevin Eastman and Nickelodeon. For the 2-LP release, the two slabs of vinyl will contain all of DuPrez's music made for the film, with the entire score being restored and remastered.


The album art, which you can see above, was created by Eastman. The vinyl itself will arrive as two 180-gram coloured LPs, with a total of eight — yes, eight — vinyl variants available (one each for Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, Raphael, Casey Jones, April O'Neil, Master Splinter and The Foot) pressed onto double vinyl with art designed by Turtles creator Kevin Eastman exclusively for this release. The packaging will feature old style tip-on gatefold jackets with satin coating and include a 1990 TMNT film poster postcard.

Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael were sensations on the page, and in 1987 became a full-fledged phenomenon in the form of a syndicated cartoon series.


A film was inevitable, and 1990’s adaptation – halfway between the grit of the original comics and the goofs of television, with impressive life-size characters built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop – sliced and diced the box-office, becoming one of the year’s top 10 blockbusters and, for a time, the highest-grossing independent film. Turtles spun off two sequels, and the franchise – now owned by Nickelodeon – is still going strong, with additional films landing in theaters in 2007, 2014 and 2016, as well as one currently in the works, and several new animated bringing the heroes in a half-shell to a new generation. (Rise Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the fourth such series, debuted on Nickelodeon USA last month and is currently rolling out worldwide)

Du Prez, a trumpeter in the salsa-pop outfit Modern Romance (which scored several U.K. Top 10s during the ’80s), was no stranger to scoring. A longtime friend of Eric Idle, he contributed cues to Monty Python’s The Meaning Of Life (1983) and later scored the Python-adjacent hit A Fish Called Wanda. For Turtles, Du Prez created a catchy theme for the heroes, as well as memorable motifs for characters (Splinter, the Turtles’ aged sensei, and the villainous Shredder) and various scenarios (the opening “Crimewave” uses a pulsating rhythm and a quickly familiar four-note motif to showcase the Foot’s grip on the city). Though three score suites shared disc space on a soundtrack album with Partners In Kryme and MC Hammer, getting the complete score has been a dream for TMNT fans – one that finally comes true.

Waxwork will release a standard 2LP vinyl later this month, featuring brand-new original artwork by series co-creator Eastman and featuring the complete score (with three alternate mixes as bonus tracks). The label recently sold advanced copies in a special limited-quantity “Shredder” color variant (one disc silver, the other maroon) at New York Comic-Con 2018. Though the label has confirmed to The Second Disc that no CD or digital plans are in motion, I'll be sure to let you know if and when one’s announced!

Viacom Announces Nickelodeon Chinese Animation Development Project; Renews 'Deer Run' for Season 2

Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) Asia today announced the launch of a five-year Nickelodeon Chinese Animation Development Project with the support of China’s National Radio and Television Administration! The project, which is designed to "drive new animation coproductions in and with China", was announced today at this years MIPCOM trade show in Cannes, France.


Viacom can do up to two qualifying projects annually under the initiative, which could include the new animation titles, new seasons of existing popular Chinese animation programs or Chinese versions of Nickelodeon’s existing animation properties.

The first project backed by the initiative is a partnership with Chinese online streaming giant iQiyi for the development of a second season of original children’s animation series Deer Run (working title). A Nickelodeon-iQiyi deal for the first season was unveiled last year and marked the first time that Nickelodeon Asia worked on a Chinese original from its conception stage after having previously simply acquired Chinese content.

Currently in production, the first season of the 40-episode 11-minute CG-animated series is set to premiere in the first quarter of 2020. The collaboration for the second season will continue to see Nickelodeon providing creative guidance and supervision, with Viacom set to air it on Nickelodeon international networks outside of China, while exploring the show’s licensing potential outside of the country.

“We are thrilled to expand our cooperation with Nickelodeon to develop Deer Run. Recently, iQiyi is committed to producing outstanding original content, and we will continue to work with talented partners to bring the best content to our users,” said the Chinese company’s chief content officer, Wang Xiaohui.

Deer Run, with its endearing and humorous storylines and compelling, relatable characters, proves that great original animation content can come from any part of the world,” said Nina Hahn, Senior Vice President (SVP) international production and development.

“With vital support from NRTA via the Nickelodeon Chinese Animation Development Project and through our ongoing strategic relationship with iQiyi, we believe there is an exciting opportunity to showcase China’s fantastic animation talent and resources to the international market," said Mark Whitehead, President and Managing Director (MD), Asia Pacific, Viacom International Media Networks.

Asked by The Hollywood Reporter what it takes for Chinese animation projects to succeed abroad, he said: "To take animation outside of China, we will need to identify great Chinese content, which checks off the boxes for us: great storytelling and characters; strong production quality; ability for content to travel around Asia and internationally; a plus [is] content that taps into fans' desire to interact with the characters and gives us an ability to take the animation property beyond the screen. And that’s why we’re so excited about iQiyi’s Deer Run as we believe it has checked off all the boxes."

"We are delighted an international media company like Viacom has demonstrated their commitment to the Chinese market and will be taking the lead in further promoting Chinese children’s animation," said China’s National Radio and Television Administration. "We look forward to seeing the co-creation of new intellectual properties in and by China’s animation community in partnership with Viacom."

VIMN Asia also announced at MIPCOM 2018 that MTV has reached a cooperation agreement with Asian media company WebTVAsia covering short-form video content for China’s Generation Z. Under the deal, financial terms of which weren’t disclosed, WebTVAsia will have exclusive streaming rights to select made-in-China shortform content from the MTV library to be streamed on its partner platforms in mainland China. Music-based programming covered by the deal includes MTV music charts, MTV News, pop culture features and more. So far, MTV content was available in the country only via the MTV China channel.

Mobile data has becoming cheaper and cheaper in China, which has helped drive the growth in shortform consumption. Under MTV's deal with WebTVAsia, made-in-China content will first become available on Tencent’s recently launched Yoo Video shortform video app.

“The young generation is clearly watching more and more video via mobile, which is driving the popularity of shortform video apps in China, along with the growing demand for original shortform content,” said Pierre Cheung, senior vp and general manager, Greater China, Viacom International Media Networks. “Hence, as part of our strategy with Viacom Digital Studios International, we’re bringing the power and scale of Viacom’s global content engine to support the Chinese industry, starting first with our original made-in-China content for the Chinese.”

Said Fred Chong, Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of WebTVAsia: "As a content creation company reaching audiences in China and Asia since 2005, we understand the culture and consumption trends of these markets. Hence, our unique leading position bridging China partners like Tencent, Baidu, Toutiao, NetEase, Weibo, Youku and iQiyi to global content partners. I’m pleased to be partnering [Viacom] in expanding business together in China."

Cheung told THR: "China’s Generation Z is the first Chinese generation to have been born in a fully modern, mobile-first nation. They have the world at their fingertips, never knowing a time when Internet access wasn’t high-speed and mobile. It is this generation that’s changing the way we do business. They are clearly watching more and more video via mobile, which is driving the popularity of shortform video apps in China." As such, he said that "the collaboration will strengthen MTV’s audience touch-points across multiple platforms, including social and mobile."

Both of Viacom's initiatives for China will provide new opportunities in the big Asian market for two of the company's flagship brands.

China is this year’s country of honor at MIPCOM.
