Super RTL May Take Over Nickelodeon in Germany as Paramount+ Set to Concentrate on Streaming

German family channel Super RTL wants to take over children’s channel Nickelodeon in Germany and rebrand it into its children’s brand Toggo.

The companies confirmed a corresponding agreement to German industry publication DWDL.

According to the agreement, Super RTL will take over Nickelodeon’s established satellite frequency on Astra (19.2° East) and operate the free-to-air channel under its own Toggo brand after a transitional period, while continuing to show popular Nickelodeon series such as PAW Patrol, SpongeBob SquarePants and The Loud House. The Nickelodeon channel brand will disappear from German free-TV. Paramount intends to focus entirely on its streaming services Paramount+ and Pluto TV in the children’s sector in Germany in future.

“By expanding the partnership with Nickelodeon and Paramount, Super RTL is offering its young audience an even richer wealth of high-quality children’s programmes. The takeover of the satellite frequency creates a new valuable Toggo touchpoint for the target group of 3 to 13-year-olds. This fits perfectly into the strategy of making the Toggo brand present and tangible for children across as many channels and platforms as possible,” said Thorsten Braun, Head of Marketing, Brand & Consumer Products Officer at RTL Deutschland.

Michael Keidel, Vice President Ad Sales, Affiliate & Streaming Partnerships in Northern, Central & Eastern Europe at Paramount, added: “Thanks to the strategic partnership with Super RTL, the popular Nickelodeon characters and stories for children in Germany continue to have a firm place on free-TV. This fits perfectly into our strategy of entertaining fans via numerous high-reach touchpoints. These include our premium streaming service Paramount+, our free, ad-financed streaming service Pluto TV and our pay-TV channels.”

Although competitors, Paramount and Super RTL do have existing content and licensing deals, for example with PAW Patrol since 2016 and with SpongeBob SquarePants in 2021. So they aren't strangers.

Paramount has a similar agreement with Switzerland’s CH Media, with the latter taking over the running of Nickelodeon in the country in October 2022.

April 17, 2024— Paramount+ today announced that new episodes of the groundbreaking docuseries BEHIND THE MUSIC will premiere exclusively on the service in the U.S. and Canada on Wednesday, May 1 and in the UK, Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria on Thursday, May 2. The new episodes profile Bell Biv DeVoe, Trace Adkins and Wolfgang Van Halen and remastered episodes feature 50 Cent, Bobby Brown, Ice-T, Milli Vanilli, The Notorious B.I.G. and Sinead O'Connor.

Official loglines for new episodes are as follows:

  • When New Edition dissolved in the late ’80s, Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell and Michael Bivins were counted out by critics and record execs. However, they defied expectations and became a multi-platinum group with their album Poison. The trio created some of the greatest party anthems of the 1990s, but infighting, financial pitfalls, addiction and mental health struggles almost led to the group’s demise. Four decades later, Bell Biv DeVoe still is performing for multiple generations of adoring global fans.
  • Trace Adkins’ career is a country music song in itself. Despite a near-fatal shooting, Adkins worked his way to the top of the country music charts with his platinum-selling debut album Dreamin’ Out Loud. But a sophomore slump and a struggle with alcoholism nearly destroyed his career as soon as it took off. With help from family, musicians and mentors alike, Trace pushed forward with even more hits, a flourishing acting career and a new lease on life.
  • Wolfgang Van Halen reveals his story that’s wrought with trauma, perseverance and immense talent. Born to guitar god Eddie Van Halen and actress Valerie Bertinelli, Wolfgang instantly became bound to music. As he developed his own sound, Wolfgang turned to his solo project, Mammoth WVH, before tragedy struck. Eddie’s death rocked his son’s world, but Wolfgang solidified his music career with a sound all of his own while continuing to honor his father’s legacy.

These artists join the star-studded lineup of original BEHIND THE MUSIC episodes on Paramount+, featuring Boy George, Bret Michaels, Busta Rhymes, Duran Duran, Fat Joe, Huey Lewis, Jason Aldean, Jennifer Lopez, LL Cool J, New Kids on the Block, Remy Ma and Ricky Martin.

April 18, 2024 – Paramount+ with SHOWTIME today released the official trailer and key art for the upcoming second half of season six of the hit SHOWTIME Original series THE CHI, which will return on Friday, May 10 on streaming and on demand for Paramount+ subscribers with the Paramount+ with SHOWTIME® plan, before making its on-air debut on Sunday, May 12, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The series recently wrapped production in Chicago on the remaining eight episodes of the supersized 16-episode season.

Created and executive produced by Emmy® winner Lena Waithe (Twenties, Master of None) under her Hillman Grad banner and executive produced by Academy Award® and Emmy winner Common (Selma), THE CHI is a timely coming-of-age story centering on a group of residents on the South Side of Chicago who become linked by coincidence but bonded by the need for connection and redemption. Produced entirely in its namesake city, THE CHI is produced by 20th Television.

The record-breaking season-six premiere, which ranks among the top SHOWTIME premieres ever in streaming viewership, kicked off a season that careened between the highest highs and lowest lows. This season, Emmett (Jacob Latimore) and Kiesha’s (Birgundi Baker) blissful blended union is tested by his perilous partnership with Douda, (Curtiss Cook), who is dealing with the fallout of Q’s murder and its effect on the shifting loyalty of his inner circle. Victor’s (Luke James) tangled past impacts his new role as city councilman. Newlyweds Jada (Yolonda Ross) and Darnell (Rolando Boyce) fear for son Emmett after he makes a desperate, life-threatening move. Rob (Iman Shumpert) and Tiff’s (Hannaha Hall) cannabis business and Jake’s (Michael V. Epps) apparel line take off, while Papa (Shamon Brown Jr.) is still struggling with the senseless loss of his beloved father. Maisha (Genesis Denise Hale) fights for her own big career move in spite of manager Jemma’s (Judae’a Brown) newly divided attentions. But danger lies in wait…no one is safe and everyone will be tested as never before over the course of the sixth season’s shocking last eight episodes.

The iconic Latina heroine made her triumphant return earlier this month in the all-new CG-animated series produced by Nickelodeon Animation. Guided by trustworthy Map (Anairis Quiñones), Dora and her friends must work together to overcome many obstacles while being challenged by the sneakiest fox, Swiper (Marc Weiner). Kathleen Herles, the original voice of Dora the Explorer, voices Mami.

DORA is produced by Nickelodeon Animation in Burbank, California, and created by Chris Gifford and Valerie Walsh Valdes. Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes and Rich Magallanes serve as executive producers. Henry Lenardin-Madden serves as co-executive producer, and Alejandro Bien-Willner serves as story editor. Marielle Kaar is Nickelodeon's Executive in Charge of Production for the series. Dora the Explorer was created by Chris Gifford, Valerie Walsh Valdes and Eric Weiner.

SpongeBob SquarePants is marking its landmark 25th anniversary on-air this year, and to celebrate, The Intertidal Zone, the educational "science adventure" comic written and illustrated by Stephen Hillenburg to educate his students on tide-pool animals, which would go on to serve as the inspiration for the late creator's beloved Nickelodeon animated series, has been made available to view in full on The Internet Archive!

The Intertidal Zone

Hillenburg, a trained marine biologist, first dreamt up the series'"somewhat nerdy, squeaky clean oddball" protagonist whilst teaching marine biology at the Orange County Marine Institute (now Ocean Institute) in 1989.

As a marine science teacher and self-described "ocean freak," Hillenburg has said he first drew natural sponges for the series, but after sketching a square household sponge, "it looked so funny" that he knew his star had been born.

After a few years, Hillenburg realized that his true passion was for art, and enrolled in Cal Arts’ prestigious animation program.

After graduation, Hillenburg made a few experimental shorts before being hired as a director on Nickelodeon’s Rocko’s Modern Life. When that series went off the air, some of his co-workers started pressing him to put a pitch together for his own show. Although the comic starred Rocky-the-Shrimp, it would be another one of the characters from The Intertidal Zone, Bob the Sponge, who would be core to the series. He put a presentation together complete with a underwater terrarium with character models in it and it impressed Nickelodeon executives enough for them to fund a pilot in 1997.

They had two weeks to put it together, and Hillenburg and creative director Derek Drymon were panicked that it wouldn’t go over. But that first 11 minute clip was so solid that the Nick execs immediately watched it again and then decided to make SpongeBob SquarePants into an animated series.

He first named his "absorbent and yellow and porous" creation "SpongeBoy," but due to copyright issues with a mop company, he swapped a letter and settled on SpongeBob. He reportedly deemed it important to keep "sponge" in the moniker, out of fear that kids may mistake SpongeBob for a block of cheese.

He did, however, see some correlations between SpongeBob and a natural sponge. "I think the realest connection is that sponges are odd and we think of them as odd," Hillenburg added to the Washington Post. "I think the connection to SpongeBob is that sponges are the most elastic, changing, plastic creatures... and I wanted him to be able to do things that were really magical."

Hillenburg continued: "He has these really creative moments when he can re-form himself. But most sponges in the ocean are sedentary: They attach themselves to a rock and sit and filter-feed the rest of their lives, and reproduce, and that's about it. Not that they are not interesting, but they are not that kinetic. They are not mobile. They don't cook Krabbie Patties!"

In the end, however, the cartoon's for-all-ages comedy interwoven with positive lessons is the bedrock of SpongeBob SquarePants' enduring legacy. As Hillenburg, who drew upon personal experiences as a child for storylines, himself summed up: "First of all, we want the show to be really funny. But I think in the end the message is: Treat people the way you expect to be treated."

In addition to SpongeBob, The Intertidal Zone features first glimpses of characters whose designs would later be used on SpongeBob SquarePants, such as a sea cucumber that looks a lot like Kevin C. Cucumber.

Since its launch July 17, 1999, SpongeBob SquarePants has reigned as the most-watched animated series for 22 consecutive years, while generating a universe of beloved characters, pop culture catchphrases and memes, theatrical releases, consumer products, a Tony award-winning Broadway musical and a global fan base. Produced by Nickelodeon in Burbank, Calif., SpongeBob SquarePants is one of the most widely distributed properties in Paramount Global history, seen in more than 180 markets, translated in 30+ languages, and averaging more than 90 million total viewers every quarter.

After 25 years of delighting audiences around the world, SpongeBob SquarePants shows no sign of slowing down. Fresh off from hosting Super Bowl LVIII and in addition to the main series, SpongeBob SquarePants has spawned two spin-offs, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show, and has several movies in development, including Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, which is slated to debut on Netflix in 2024, and The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, which is currently set to be released in theaters on December 19, 2025.

SkyShowtime has released the full trailer for upcoming SkyShowtime Original Series, The Tattooist of Auschwitz, with all episodes available to stream exclusively from 7 June.

The six-part limited drama series, based on the international bestselling novel by Heather Morris, is inspired by the real-life story of Lali and Gita Sokolov, who met while prisoners in the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust of World War II.

This powerful trailer shows an older Lali (Harvey Keitel) retelling his experiences of Auschwitz to Heather Morris (Melanie Lynskey) as we journey with him through his memories of that time. As the trailer unfolds, audiences witness the emotional tale of love and resilience as younger Lali, (Jonah Hauer-King), crosses paths with Gita (Anna Próchniak) and embarks on a profound journey of love amidst the horrors of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

The trailer includes a poignant original score from multi–Academy® Award-winning composer Hans Zimmer and Kara Talve, who have also composed the soundtrack for the series.

The Tattooist of Auschwitz is the story of one man, Lali (Hauer-King), a Slovakian Jew, who, in 1942, is deported to Auschwitz, the concentration camp where over a million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust.

Shortly after arrival, Lali is made one of the Tätowierer (tattooists), charged to ink identification numbers onto fellow prisoners’ arms. One day, he meets Gita (Próchniak) when tattooing her prisoner number on her arm, leading to a love that defies the horrors around them. So begins a courageous and unforgettable story. Under constant guard from a volatile Nazi SS officer Stefan Baretzki (Jonas Nay), Lali and Gita become determined to keep each other alive.

Around 60 years later, Lali (Keitel) now in his 80s, meets aspiring writer Heather Morris (Lynskey). Recently widowed, Lali finds the courage to tell the world his story. In recounting his past to Heather, Lali finally confronts the traumatic ghosts of his youth and relives his memories of falling in love in the darkest of places.

Directed by Tali Shalom-Ezer, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is executive produced by Claire Mundell through her company Synchronicity Films and is produced in association with Sky Studios and All3Media International. The series is a coproduction for Sky and Peacock. Jacquelin Perske is Executive Producer and lead writer for The Tattooist of Auschwitz alongside episode writers Evan Placey (Associate Producer) and Gabbie Asher. It seems the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie will be taking inspiration from Sonic Adventure 2. This is according to producer Toby Ascher. Speaking to GamesRadar, the producer said, “It’s going to be this giant, fun, incredible movie that obviously takes a lot from Sonic Adventure 2 and some of the games that I know the core Sonic Team grew up loving.” Sonic Adventure 2 is the classic good vs evil story, featuring Knuckles, Doctor Eggman, Tails, Shadow and #SonictheHedgehog. In the game, Eggman finds the Ultimate Lifeform his grandfather, Gerald Robotnik, had been working on - which turns out to be Shadow. This is also where we meet Maria and learn of her connection to Eggman and Shadow. #SonicMovie3 hits theaters December 20th.

May 2024 is almost upon us and that means it’s time to take a look at all the titles coming to Paramount+ across the month.

May will be a sad time as fan-favourite series Star Trek: Discovery, comes to an end. But with two legendary additions and an incredible new original series May should also be an exciting month for genre fans.

From May 3 subscribers will have access to all 144 episodes of the iconic sci-fi series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The series stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy Summers aka the Slayer, a lone young woman chosen in each generation to be bestowed with mystical powers to fight vampires, demons and the forces of darkness.

Then on May 13 Buffy will be joined by the first season of another fan-favourite series, The X-Files. FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) probe in to cases that have been left unresolved. But whilst Mulder believes in the paranormal, Scully settles for a more scientific approach. New series of The X-Files will then join Paramount+ each week until all 218 episodes are available.

Looking ahead to June 2024, fans can look forward to season three of Mayor of Kingstown, streaming 3 June.

Paramount+ Is Carving Out a Safe Streaming Space for Kids

The streamer has a lot of stuff kids want to watch and is getting serious about making sure they have a safe and easy way to do that.

There are generally two types of parents: those who let their kids watch YouTube and those who work very hard to keep their kids as far from YouTube as possible. Streaming services seem to understand that divide, and are eager to provide an alternative to YouTube that gives parents all the set-and-forget appeal of YouTube Kids without, hopefully, inappropriate content.

Paramount+, with its massive library of Nickelodeon and Nick Jr. shows, is a little more primed than other streamers that have had to create a library of kids content from scratch. In a conversation on Zoom, Dan Reich, Executive Vice President (EVP) and global head of product and design of Paramount Plus, told The Verge's Alex Cranz it was the number two content draw for the platform, which is a big reason the streaming service just overhauled its whole kids experience. The company wants it to be an “easy, fun place tailored to the demo.”

Reich and Paramount Plus wanted to make the streaming service a safer place for kids so it will now be easier to set up children’s profiles. When you go in to add a new profile, there’s now a toggle for Kids Mode and an option for Younger Kids age-gated to TV-Y and G-rated stuff and an Older Kids option age-gated up to PG content. Reich was quick to note that the profiles would not be gathering any personal data on the kids. This means a lot less personalization but also hopefully fewer recommendations that might not be appropriate.

Instead, personalization will be user-directed, which is a fancy way of saying it will rely on traditional streaming UI tricks like suggesting they keep watching a show they had to pause for homework or suggesting they watch something again — which most kids rarely need prompting to do. But personalization will also largely be reserved for older children — think ages seven to 12. Younger kids (Reich mentioned ages two to six) will have a different experience with big icons and precious few words, which makes sense as that’s around the age you’re actually learning literacy.

Besides easier profile creation, the landing page for kids content has also gotten a major refresh with a big carousel similar to the one found in the adult version of Paramount Plus. Reich noted that the carousel works, too — with a 17 percent improvement in playback rate. And if you’re worried about Paramount Plus babysitting a child too much, Reich was also quick to note that autoplay is automatically turned off in children’s profiles.

These changes are already live on the Paramount Plus app as of April 22th, but in Cranz's conversation with Reich, Reich mentioned some other changes coming later to the platform, including the possibility of using generative AI to create playlists of kids content and artwork and a new profile creation prompt that’s expected to launch in Q2.

And these are all good things! Before streaming dominated content consumption, kids content was pretty well sorted onto channels and time blocks geared just for them. It was the whole point of Nickelodeon for decades. That meant kids were getting the stuff they wanted to watch (and that network censors felt was appropriate), and adults were not having to sift through children's programming to find what they wanted to watch.

Older users of Paramount+ will noticed they'll get a lot fewer recommendations for kids content than they do on Netflix and Disney Plus — which both assume a child is living in the house with them just because they sometimes rewatch younger-skewing programming. However, on Paramount+, if you rewatch a series such as The Legend of Korra, the service may suggest you rewatch Avatar: The Last Airbender or the very violent and adult Ark: The Animated Series instead of something like Dora the Explorer. Older users may find it a nice experience to have the platform understand they're an adult who likes cartoons and not just assume cartoon equals baby.

And as streaming continues to supplant cable as the way we watch content, other streaming services are going to need to get more thoughtful about how they present and separate that content. So far, it looks like Paramount Plus might be giving them a nice blueprint.

Paramount+ Unveils New 'Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Teaser Trailer

Paramount+ is set to premiere Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a brand new 2D animated series set in the universe of the smash-hit film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, this summer, and to celebrate, IGN's official X/Twitter page has unveiled a brand new teaser trailer for the series!


From the universe of the Mutant Mayhem film, the all-new Paramount+ original series explores the adventures of everyone's favorite pizza-loving heroes as they emerge from the sewers onto the streets of NYC. Leo, Raph, Donnie and Mikey are faced with new threats and team up with old allies to survive both teenage life and villains lurking in the shadows of the Big Apple.

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been picked up for two seasons, and will serve as a bridge between Mutant Mayhem and its upcoming sequel, currently slated to be released in theaters on Friday, October 9, 2026.

Reprising their roles from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, the series features Micah Abbey (Cousins for Life) as Donatello, Shamon Brown Jr. (THE CHI) as Michelangelo, Nicolas Cantu (The Walking Dead: World Beyond) as Leonardo, Brady Noon (Family Switch) as Raphael and Ayo Edebiri (The Bear) as April O’Neil. Additional casting will soon be announced.

Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

From Nickelodeon Animation and Point Grey Pictures, who​ brought audiences last summer’s smash-hit Paramount Pictures film, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is executive produced by Chris Yost (The Mandalorian, Thor: Ragnarok) and Alan Wan (Blue Eye Samurai, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles [2012 Series]). Production is overseen for Nickelodeon by Claudia Spinelli, Senior Vice President of Big Kids Animation and Nikki Price, Director of Development and Executive in Charge of Production.

Internationally, Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will air on Nickelodeon channels and stream on Paramount+ where the service is available.

In addition to Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, fans can also look forward to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants Unleashed, a brand new video game from Outright Games that picks up after the events of the movie, which is set to be released on consoles and PC later this year. In the summer of 1991, the Lollapalooza music festival was born. What started as a farewell tour for the band Jane’s Addiction rose from the underground to launch a cultural movement and change music forever.

LOLLA: THE STORY OF LOLLAPALOOZA depicts the exciting and strangely symbiotic 30+ year relationship between the iconic festival and Perry Farrell (Jane’s Addiction). Throughout the series, Farrell reconnects with what the event has become and reflects on the festival’s cultural significance across multiple genres and decades.

In season three, a series of explosions rock Kingstown and its citizens, as a new face of the Russian mob sets up shop in the city, and a drug war rages inside and outside prison walls. The pressure is on Mike McLusky (Renner) to end the war but things get complicated when a familiar face from his incarcerated past threatens to undermine the Mayor’s attempts to keep the peace among all factions.
