Lincolnshire skateboarding teen Jesse Thomas to feature on Nickelodeon show

A skateboarding teen from Lincolnshire will be broadcast on a major children's television network.

South Hykeham skater Jesse Thomas has taken his board-flipping skills to competitions across the UK and into Europe after moving to Lincoln two years ago.

Now, he is in the running for a Skills of the Skatepark award in new series Fruit Shoot Get Your Skills On after he was selected to feature on the Nickelodeon programme.

The 15-year-old will be up against three other youngsters vying for the award, and will feature in the first episode airing this Saturday at 9am.

"I first got into skateboarding when my mum bought me a board set up for a late 10th birthday present," he said.

"When I first moved up here, the first place I went to was Fen Lane in North Hykeham, which is my local now. There is a lovely little scene here for skaters. It is growing slowly but surely."

The Norwich-born teen started skating at Sherringham Skate Park in Norfolk.

He moved to Cornwall and then Brighton, and took his budding skateboarding skills to Lincolnshire when he moved as a 13-year-old.

The teen, who is home-schooled, said skateboarding and competing helped him focus his energy while coping with dyslexia among other things.

However, despite his success in competitions, being invited onto the Nickelodeon series and the award nomination still surprised him.

He hopes he can use his appearance to inspire others to take it on as a hobby, and even a sport.

"I got an e-mail a few months ago saying they wanted to do programme called King of the Skatepark, and it all went from there," he said.

"I am really happy about being nominated. What I hope comes from it is that it inspires other kids to start skating. It is one of those things that is a lovely thing community rather than doing by yourself."
