¡destruir Jurassic World para siempre!

From Milenio:

Discovery y Nickelodeon.

'The Incredible Elijah;' 12-year-old Chesterfield boy in the running for Nickelodeon's 'Kid of the Year'

Elijah Lee was only in first grade when the world as he knew it became a much darker place. He was all of 6 years old the day he noticed the bruises on the leg of a classmate. When he innocently asked what happened, if she’d fallen down or somehow hurt herself, the young girl confided in him that her parents, in the midst of a fight, had hit her.

He didn’t quite understand the magnitude of the situation, but it scared him. He did the only thing he knew to do: He told his mom, and he told a teacher.

Elijah’s life changed in that moment.

Now 12 years old, Elijah is planning his fourth march against child abuse, a small but mighty voice for the many children — like his classmate — who can’t speak up for themselves.

For his efforts, Elijah is among 20 children in the running for the first “Kid of the Year” honor, a collaboration among Nickelodeon, Time magazine and Time for Kids. The distinction honors young movers and shakers nationwide who aren’t letting their age stop them from making differences in their communities. More than 5,000 children were nominated.

It’s not the first accolade for Elijah.

In 2018, after his first organized march against child abuse, he was recognized by the Marvel Hero Project for his efforts, including being featured in a Marvel comic as “The Incredible Elijah.”

The Nickelodeon-Time award, which the family just learned about this summer, will be announced during a special Nickelodeon broadcast Dec. 5.

That happens to be Elijah’s 13th birthday, which makes it all the more exciting for a kid on the cusp of teenhood, a kid who has braces and a dog named Max, a kid who loves playing chess and a kid who, most of the time, revels in the sibling rivalry with his older brothers and his younger sister.

Yet, for all the things an adolescent could be doing, Elijah feels the weight of the world on his young shoulders. The feelings he had back then, that one day in first grade, remain with him. Led by his faith and supported by his family, this young soul is tackling a heavy issue, and he’s inviting the world to join him, one child at a time.

***

According to the National Children’s Alliance, roughly 700,000 children are abused each year. Some get the help they need. Many do not. The reality is staggering and horrific.

It’s a harsh subject, even for adults to comprehend. But Elijah’s strength of his convictions belies his young age.

Jessica Lee moved her family to Chesterfield County for her work in July from Roanoke Rapids, a rural town in northeastern North Carolina near the Virginia border. It has a population of roughly 15,000 people, many of whom are low-income individuals and families. Her husband — Elijah’s dad — died when Elijah was 3.

On a recent school night, Elijah talked about his experiences and his new community, which is much different from his old one in lots of ways. He attends Swift Creek Middle School now, though he’s never actually been there, and even though Chesterfield school students can elect to go back to school, he chose to remain virtual. His new community is a lot bigger than his old one, he said — but it’s also ripe for new opportunities to spread his message.

On this night, Elijah was wearing a T-shirt with a phrase he adopted on the back: “When one rises, we all rise; but when one falls, we all fall.”

In first grade, “I knew nothing of child abuse,” Elijah said. “I was very blessed to have a home with a mother that loves me, with siblings that have my back, with people around me that I knew I could lean on and trust — but unfortunately, the same thing isn’t with every kid.”

“When I first heard that my friend had been abused, I didn’t know what to do,” he said, and it led to discussions with his mom about child abuse.

“There are some kids that go home afraid; there are some kids that go home hungry; there are some kids that go home knowing that ... they’re gonna probably get hit,” he said. “It definitely left my heart with something to think about.”

As her son spoke, Lee sat back and listened. She chimed in occasionally, reminding him about this or that. But for nearly six years, she’s watched her son walk in his purpose, gaining the strength on his own to tackle a seemingly insurmountable problem. She guides, but she’s not his mouthpiece.

Elijah can hold his own, in large part, because of his natural calling to preach the gospel.

By 10, Elijah was an ordained minister and was preaching in their former church every fifth Sunday until this past March, when the pandemic halted services. At their former church, when youth members would be given time to sing before the congregation or read Scripture, “he would go up there, [and] you would just get this full sermon, and we didn’t even know where this was coming from,” Lee said.

“Yeah, it’s weird,” she acknowledged. While theirs is a family of faith, “that was not something I was expecting at all.”

But the more he did it, “he got bolder with it, and you could just see it manifest,” she said. At the same time, he was becoming more aware of child abuse.

Lee recalled the day Elijah came home and told her about his classmate. She talked to him about child abuse. No parent wants to introduce such atrocities into their child’s life, but she wanted him to hear it from her and to understand it in the context of their family’s values.

“To be frank, I thought it was going to be a general conversation and we’d be done with it and we’d be able to move on,” she said. But Elijah didn’t let it go, and “what really changed [was] I saw his heart hurting.”

“You want your children to stay as innocent as possible, for as long as possible,” Lee said. “But I would rather him understand it from our perspective as a family.”

Elijah began to think of ways to help, and in the year or two that followed, as he was learning about people such as the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and civil rights activist John Lewis, he put the pieces together himself.

King and Lewis were “people who fought for what they believed in by marching and using their voice,” Elijah said, so he decided to organize a march against child abuse. “When I presented the idea to my mom, ... she thought I was crazy.”

As a second- or third-grader, however, “that was my life,” Elijah said. “I was huge on presenting these big massive ideas, ... but this was something I really felt I needed to do.”

Elijah’s first march, which took place in a park near his old home, drew about 200 people. The second one drew a few more, somewhere around 250. Last year’s march, held just before the pandemic shuttered everything, drew nearly 450 people, some from up and down the East Coast. In addition to the gatherings, Elijah organizes speakers, including himself.

He’s had to learn how to get a permit for an event, how to talk to local government officials and how to work with local law enforcement to make sure people remain safe during the events — and how to give media interviews.

Chuck Hasty is the former Roanoke Rapids police chief. By phone from North Carolina earlier this month, Hasty said Elijah was a big force within their small community.

“We need more young people like this, trying to make an impact,” he said, noting that he met Elijah when the young man was organizing his first march, and needed help with permitting and park access. Hasty said not only was Elijah passionate about the subject and raising awareness, but also about doing it the right way, from a citizen’s standpoint.

“He wanted to know how he could make a positive change, and the right way to make a change,” Hasty said. “He was such a good influence, and the message was hitting home with a lot of people.”

Hasty said he learned just as much from Elijah as the other way around.

“I took ahold of him and his family,” Hasty said, “and he took ahold of me.”

***

Elijah is currently planning his fourth march, for March 6, 2021. It’s always the first Saturday, though this one will be virtual. It’s from 1 to 2 p.m., and links will be sent out via social media. Speakers so far include Gov. Ralph Northam and Jon Hatami, the California prosecutor for the Gabriel Fernandez case in which the 8-year-old boy died in May 2013 after being tortured and abused by his mother and her boyfriend.

The theme for 2021 is “Justice 4 Children.”

“I feel like child abuse is one of those things that no one wants to think about,” Elijah said. “We all understand it occurs; we all understand it happens — we all know there’s a possibility our neighbors are abusing their children.”

He added: “We see children as these innocent, vulnerable beings, and when child abuse comes into play, that innocence and vulnerability is not only being violated, it’s being taken away.”

Part of learning about child abuse was also learning what happens on the other side — foster care, child protective services, laws. Elijah even visited a hospital in his former hometown to see where children go when they’ve been abuse victims. He said the dark, cold walls of a hospital room aren’t the sort of place a child can feel comfortable.

“I was just trying to think what’s going through this child’s mind,” he said, “putting myself in their shoes, where I’ve just seen my parent being taken away in handcuffs, [and] I definitely have scars on me.”

Then entering that sort of hospital environment, “that’s not helping them,” Elijah said.

It led him to start a GoFundMe initiative to raise money to transform a hospital room into a kid-friendly environment. He raised $3,000 — then was bolstered by being a guest on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” and given an additional $1,000 there. The hospital, Vidant North Hospital in Roanoke Rapids, offered to match his funding, and also provide two rooms for children instead of one.

Both of the rooms will be in the hospital’s emergency department. They’ll feature fresh paint, in either neutral or colorful tones, and one room will have games, a computer and more. The other will have wobble chairs, toys, a big-screen television and other features. They hope to be done with the rooms by next spring.

“We are inspired by Elijah’s passion and are honored to work closely with him and his family on this important issue … to raise awareness for, and ultimately end, child abuse,” said Vidant North Hospital President Jason Harrell by email. “The pediatric safe rooms will provide a safe, comforting place for those that use them.”

The marches, the speaking events, the hospital initiative — though he’s making a difference already, Elijah said his work is just beginning.

Elijah wants to be a prosecutor. He wants to be a congressman. He has a way of drawing people in with his determination.

The way he talks, his cadence with words — sometimes breathlessly, sometimes soft and quiet — show that he’s got the gift of gab, even now. He refers to other children as “our young people,” as if he’s not a young person himself.

But Elijah doesn’t just want people to listen to him — he wants to inspire other young people to do what he’s doing.

Kids like him.

“I came from the same place as you, the same economic status,” he said he used to tell people during the marches in his former hometown. “I was able to do this, so what stands in your way?”

He continued: “We can march all we want; we can talk all we want. [But] what really matters is us as young people getting involved in these politics so we can really change the laws to better the safety of our young people.”

“Your best friend could be going home right now afraid that their stepdad or their dad or their mom ... is going to hit them,” Elijah said. But “once children understand that, they’re gonna know that’s not right and they understand they can do something about it.”

“That’s really where our change starts to happen.”

Chesterfield boy among top 20 finalists for Nickelodeon’s ‘Kid of the Year’

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) — 12-year-old, Elijah Lee of Chesterfield is among the top 20 finalists of Nickelodeon’s “Kid of the Year” award.

Elijah, a 7th grader at Swift Creek Middle School, is being recognized for his work to fight against child abuse. It’s something that Elijah takes personally after an old classmate confided in him that she had been hit by her father.

“It shocked me. It pushed me back a little bit,” he said. “I didn’t understand how someone could do that.”

At just six years old, Elijah did all he knew to do: he told a teacher and his mother. A few years later, though, and after months of planning, Elijah organized his first march against child abuse. He said he wanted to use his voice for other kids who may be struggling like his former classmate.

“I saw a problem and I wanted to be the solution,” he explained.

More than 200 people attended Elijah’s first march in North Carolina back in 2017. The next year, the number grew to 250. By his third march, more than 400 people showed up. Elijah is now in the midst of planning his fourth.

He told 8news, his desire to march came from people like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and late congressman John Lewis.

“Because of their voices, we have change. Just because these people marched for a couple of years, we have laws passed,” he said.

For his work, Elijah is now in the top 20 running for Nickelodeon and Time Magazine’s “Kid of the Year” award. More than 5,000 kids applied, and it honors kids across the country who have made a positive impact in their communities.

The award will be announced during a Nickelodeon broadcast on Dec. 5.

From WWBT:

‘This is my purpose': 12-year-old from Chesterfield named as finalist for ‘Kid of the Year’ award

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WWBT) - A Chesterfield 7th grader is getting national attention for standing up for other children. Elijah Lee has been named a finalist for Nickelodeon and Time Magazine’s “Kid of the Year” award.

“We cannot give up on our survivors, we can’t give up on these people who went through these things,” said Lee. "There was still work to be done, and I had to do it, so I did.”

For several years, the Roanoke Rapids native has been on a crusade to end child abuse after a friend in first grade revealed they were being abused at home.

“We got that person help, and I came home and I talked to my mom about what child abuse was,” he said.

Elijah has continued to be an advocate for other children, and at 10 years old he held his first march to end child abuse in his hometown

“There were over 200 people in attendance, that was monumental to me, that meant something to me,” he said. “I also knew from there, this is my purpose. If I could get them to listen, even if it was for an hour, to hear our young people’s voices, I was making a difference.”

Elijah has since planned more marches, his fourth march will take place virtually on March 6, 2021.

“To any person that is a survivor of abuse or going to abuse right now, know this is not your fault. You are beautiful, you are strong and you are wonderfully made, no matter what anyone does to you or says to you - you are powerful, you are strong and you will overcome this,” said Elijah.

Elijah and his family recently moved to Chesterfield in July 2020, this is his first year at Swift Creek Middle, but over the last two years, his efforts have gained him national attention. He was recognized as part of the Marvel Hero Project, and his inspiration, the late civil rights icon John Lewis wrote Elijah a letter.

“John Lewis was 23 when he gave his speech on the March on Washington, and it made me realize our young people are not just these subtle people in history, our young people have made some amazing moves to make change," he explained.

Elijah plans to continue to use his voice to make a change while helping other young people harness the power of their voices as well.

For the holidays this year, Elijah is teaming up with SCAN (Stop Child Abuse Now) to provide families with Christmas.

“I have a saying ‘when one rises, we all rise; but when one falls, we all fall,’" said Elijah.

On Dec. 5, Elijah’s 13th birthday, he will learn if he won “Kid of the Year.”

“I hope it serves as a reminder to so many kids back home and so many kids around America - no matter where you come from, what your life looks like, what limitations have been put on you, you are capable of achieving your dreams, no matter what happens," he said.

12-year-old activist, minister Elijah Lee is finalist for Kid of the Year

At the tender age of 12, Elijah Lee has grown an extensive résumé as a spiritual leader, nationally known child advocate and speaker. Add to that finalist for the first-ever Kid of the Year Award.

On Nov. 2, Nickelodeon and TIME magazine announced their inaugural Kid of the Year honor. Twenty finalists were selected following a nationwide search in which more than 5,000 inspirational youngsters were nominated.

Elijah, a seventh-grader at Swift Creek Middle School in Chesterfield, is among the 20 finalists recognized as extraordinary young leaders who are making a positive impact in their communities.

The top five honorees will be featured on a TV special hosted by Trevor Noah 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5. The show will be simulcast on Nickelodeon, CBS, TeenNick and Nicktoons, and will feature celebrity guests, including Olympic gymnast Simone Biles.

The youngster ultimately recognized as Kid of the Year will be featured on a cover of TIME Magazine with a companion story in TIME for Kids.

“It is so hard to put into words what an honor this really is,” Elijah said in a Free Press interview this week. “I was bouncing off the walls and was so excited to receive such a national honor, as well as to be considered and looked at like this. The honor gives power to my work.”

The pre-teen social justice activist and ordained minister is devoted to combating child abuse and helping those currently dealing with it. He has organized his own annual child abuse awareness march and served as a speaker on the issue at conferences.

Born in the small town of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Elijah calls himself a “bi-racial male.”

“My mother is white and my father, Marine Sgt. Marvin Lee, who passed away when I was 3-years-old, was African- American,” he said.

His mother, Jessica Lee, moved him and his 11-year-old sister, Trinity, to Virginia on July 1.

He said he has taken this activist path because, at a very early age, he learned how children sometimes are looked at – objectified or as a fixture in a family’s house—or are mentally or sexually abused.

He said he learned when he was in the first grade that one of his female classmates was being hit by a family member. After having an uncomfortable conversation with his mother about child abuse, Elijah assisted his classmate in getting help.

However, that incident placed a lingering burden on his heart, he said, knowing he was blessed with a loving mother, sister, church and friends protecting him. These blessings ultimately led to him organizing his first annual child abuse awareness march at age 10, in Roanoke Rapids. The march was attended by more than 200 people.

Two more marches followed in consecutive years, with the last march attracting more than 450 residents.

His fourth march will be held on Zoom because of the pandemic. It is scheduled for 1 to 2 p.m. March 6, in Chesterfield. Gov. Ralph S. Northam will be a virtual speaker, he said.

In honor of Elijah’s work, the county of Halifax, N.C., and the city of Roanoke Rapids have named the first Saturday in March Child Abuse Awareness Day.

His community involvement, inspired by his growing knowledge of Angela Davis, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the late Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, continued in Roanoke Rapids, with Elijah

raising money to develop two pediatric safe rooms at a local hospital there. Rooms will be converted into a safe, welcoming space for children who have experienced trauma and abuse.

In his spiritual life, Elijah was ordained as a minister at age 10 by Bishop Nathaniel Dupree at the Church Of The Holy City in Emporia.

He believes his spiritual work is necessary.

“My job on this Earth is to continue to fight for our young people — empower and encourage them, to have their voices heard and stand up for what is right,” he strongly said.

Looking toward the future, Elijah said he is interested in politics. “I want to be a congressman and address racism, systemic racism within our court and legislative systems and public education, especially for low-income children.”

Being recognized as a finalist for Kid of the Year is just the latest honor for the young man. His years of activism led him to be honored with the designation of Marvel Hero on the Marvel Hero Project streaming on Disney Plus, episode 2, “Incredible Elijah.”

He also was featured in PEOPLE Magazine for his work with the Marvel Hero Project, and is featured in “Kids Speak Out About Violence,” a book published by Rourke Educational Media.

Newport Beach teen nominated for TIME’s Kid of the Year for ‘Skip the Plastic Straw’ campaign

Chloe Mei Espinosa, with straws, is among the Top 20 nominees for Nickelodeon and TIME’s Kid of the Year. She was nominated for her efforts with her campaign, “Skip the Plastic Straw.” Sister Ella Lin, who helps her with the campaign and videos, stands with an awareness poster, and her mom, Alison Yap, and dad, David, join them at Corona del Mar State Beach. (Don Leach)

It started at Newport Coast Elementary School.

Chloe Mei Espinosa, asked to identify a passion project she could research and act on in the sixth grade, had recently seen a video of a sea turtle with a plastic straw lodged in its nostril. For her project, she decided she’d try to eliminate plastic straws and launched “Skip the Plastic Straw,” with a website called skiptheplasticstraw.com.

Not long after, she was an incoming seventh-grader to Corona del Mar Middle School when she campaigned the Newport-Mesa Unified School District to stop offering plastic straws with student lunches and convinced Dale Ellis, then the district’s director of nutrition services, to remove plastic straws from all 32 school cafeterias in addition to making paper straws available.

“When I heard the good news, I felt like the ocean was giving me a huge hug, saying, ‘Thank you, thank you, thank you for helping me,’” Chloe Mei said about her efforts in 2018.

It is now two years later, and Chloe Mei, 14, said she has convinced the Saddleback Valley Unified and Capistrano Valley Unified school districts to make the switch and skip plastic straws too. She’s also managed to get a hospital in Irvine and another in her hometown of Newport Beach to phase them out.

In acknowledgment of her efforts, she’s been nominated for the first ever Nickelodeon and TIME magazine Kid of the Year award.

The prize, for which Chloe Mei is a top-20 finalist, looks to recognize young leaders who are making a positive impact in their communities. The top five honorees will be featured in a television special hosted by Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show,” with one nominee to be recognized as Kid of the Year and be featured on a cover of TIME with a story in TIME for Kids.

The special will air on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and Pacific Standard Time on Nickelodeon, TeenNick and Nicktoons. Each of the five kids will have the chance to receive a cash prize and be a kid reporter for TIME for Kids with exclusive access to a Nickelodeon event.

The Mater Dei High School freshman said Monday she’d first gotten word of her nomination in September but wasn’t sure she’d get farther than that. When she found out she got into the top 50, she was even more surprised.

“I feel so honored to be recognized for my work, and it’s a great opportunity for me to spread my message,” Chloe Mei said. “It’s so cool for other people to see what I’m doing and what all the other kids ... [are] doing as well.”

Her mother, Alison Yap, said she was proud of her eldest daughter, adding that the whole family was in tears when they found out she’d made it to the top 20 nominees.

“She’s being recognized for what she’s doing,” Yap said. "[Chloe Mei’s] a very positive girl. She’s always so happy. During COVID, it was really hard. It hit her quite badly with a lot of events she wasn’t able to attend, including promoting from eighth grade to high school, but she still kept a positive attitude.”

“With this recognition, it really lifted her spirits,” she added. “It motivates her to keep wanting to go on.”

The pandemic has made it difficult for Chloe Mei to work on her “Skip the Plastic Straw” campaign but not impossible. She’s participated in remote campaigns such as the Ocean Heroes Virtual Boot Camp and launched a YouTube channel with her younger sister, Ella Lin, called “Sustainable Sisters,” where they review ecofriendly products.

Though she doesn’t know if she’s made it to the final five, Chloe Mei said she plans on approaching her high school in the near future with a proposal to eliminate single-use plastic bottles and to reach out to the Newport Beach City Council to see if the city can also skip plastic straws and offer paper straws instead.

The topic has come up before city officials in the past. Newport previously banned Styrofoam in 2008 but made some exceptions for ice chests, egg cartons and prepared food packaged outside of town. Proposed foodware changes came up at a meeting for the city’s Water Quality and Coastal Tidelands Committee in December.

Chloe Mei said plastic straws are still offered on request, but she wants to ask if the city could switch to paper straws on request instead to “eliminate the source completely.”

“I want to keep up doing videos and show you can live a sustainable life and it doesn’t have to be hard,” Chloe Mei said. “You don’t have to do completely no waste right away. It can be one small step, like changing that single-use water bottle to a reusable water bottle.”

Scottsdale teen nominated for Nickelodeon, Time Magazine’s ‘Kid of the Year’ honor

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A Scottsdale teen is one of 20 finalists for Nickelodeon and Time Magazine’s “Kid of the Year.” The initiative recognizes young leaders making a positive impact in their communities.

Dylan Campshaw, 14, was selected from 5,000 nominations. The top five nominees will be featured on a TV special hosted by Trevor Noah on December 5.

Capshaw is a freshman at Rancho Solano Preparatory School, but he’s also found time to run two nonprofits and a business.

He started the Dylan Capshaw Wildlife Foundation in 2017.

“I’d always loved animals so I wanted to start saving them and raising money for other organizations to start helping them. I started with dogs, then hedgehog then lizards and then it got bigger and bigger,” he said.

He runs the nonprofit from his Scottsdale home, where the rescued animals live.

“We have a kangaroo, I have prairie dogs, I have a chameleon, savannah monitors, exotic aviary, and a livestock aviary with turkey, geese, ducks, chicken, quails,” he said.

Capshaw started his second nonprofit For the Frontline during the pandemic. He used his 3-D printer to create face shields and face masks for first responders.

“I found a template where I could 3D print a mask and turn one surgical mask into seven uses. And I started sending them all out. We sent over 3,000 care packages with PPE in them all over the country to first responders– hospitals and police officers,” said Capshaw.

Most recently, Capshaw’s been working on a new business called The Sanitation Station. It’s a vending machine filled with PPE and locally sourced food and drinks.

“Filled them up with masks, sunscreen, gloves hand sanitizer, everything you’d need. Talked to the Scottsdale Quarter and I’m getting it placed in the Scottsdale Quarter hopefully soon,” he said.

Capshaw said it’s an honor to be recognized nationally, and he hopes he can inspire other kids to do what they love.

“You don’t have to be an adult to do anything. Right now, it’s a blessing to have this time at home, we have so much time to do something. If someone has a passion or something you want to fix, do it,” he said. “Helping animals and people I’d say is my big goal so whether I stick to these nonprofits or I start making new ones to make more of a difference, I just want to keep making a difference.”

Even in 2020, there are things to be thankful for, says young 'I Just Wanna Live' singer

Clay County teen Keedron Bryant is Time magazine finalist for 'Kid of the Year'

Johnnetta Bryant is thankful that her son Keedron still seems the same, even after all the attention he gained in a tough, tough year for the country and the world. The 13-year-old, a virtual student at Oakleaf Junior High in Clay County, is still outgoing, playing games, riding bikes, and still doing chores around the house.

Except now he has a fan base.

A fan base that includes kids his age, along with massively famous athletes, singers, actors, talk-show hosts, even an ex-president of the United States.

And now he's one of 20 finalists for "Kid of the Year," a collaboration between Time magazine, Time for Kids and Nickelodeon, meant to recognize children making a positive impact. The top five finishers (still secret) will be featured Dec. 5 on a show simulcast on Nickelodeon and CBS. Trevor Noah will host.

This all took place in just the last six months after Keedron mother watched the video showing George Floyd pinned to the ground by a Minneapolis police officer until he died.

"And at the point in the video where Mr. Floyd called out for his mother — being a mother to a Black son, that moment just pierced my heart," she said. "I was just compelled to do so something, to say something."

So she quickly wrote "I Just Wanna Live," which begins: "I just want to live/God protect me/I'm a young Black man/Doing all that I can."

Keedron, a vocal prodigy who's been singing since he was a toddler, recorded a cappella version on his phone and put it on his social media.

He'd posted other songs before, but the reaction had been nothing like this. It went viral, quickly zooming across the world, even earning Keedron, who'd been featured on the NBC talent show "Little Big Shots," a recording contract with Warner Records.

Keedron performed it on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show." It was played during halftime at the NFL opener in Kansas City. Another of his songs, "U Got This," was played at halftime of the Jaguars' home opener. CNN and other outlets featured stories about him.

"I Just Wanna Live" came at the right time in a very troubling year and became something of an anthem for the Black Lives Matter movement.

Johnnetta Bryant says she knows where she got the words, after seeing that horrible video of Floyd's death.

"I went into prayer, and God gave me those words," she said. "I know it was him."

She is a civilian worker for the Department of Defense. Her husband, Kendric, has been in the Navy for 23 years. They're both ministers who teach small groups at Elevate Life Church.

As Thanksgiving approached, Bryant reflected on the changes that 2020 brought her family and so many others. Lessons, she said, can be learned in such a terrible year.

"I'm thankful for life," she said. "I have learned that 2020 has shown me that spending time with the ones you love, just valuing that time together, is far greater than any gift, any monetary or any tangible thing. Just the gift of life in 2020 is a blessing.”

For his part, Keedron was quick to say what he was thankful for.

“I’m thankful for my family, my friends, my church, a house to live in and just love and joy and to be able to get around family and laugh with each other, he said a few days before Thanksgiving. "Mostly I’m thankful for Jesus, and my music career, and all the good things that are happening, how God has been able to keep using me to spread this message.”

Keedron said he wants to keep releasing positive music and motivational messages.

"In 2020 we are going through trying times, a lot of bad things are happening," he said. "We need motivation in people’s lives, encouragement and uplifting people, putting a smile on people's faces and making them feel loved inside.”

He remembers his amazement, at age 12, after posting "I Just Wanna Live" on various social media platforms, then seeing its numbers skyrocketing.

“Wow, this is happening: I'm going viral," he said. "Celebrities are sharing my video, people are posting and reposting everywhere. Even in Africa, in England, globally even, people were sharing my video. And LeBron James and Snoop Dogg and Oprah and Ellen, so many people shared it."

And so did former President Barack Obama, who posted the video on his Instagram account and mentioned Keedron.

“That was just one of the biggest moments in my life. Me and my mom, we were just screaming. What? This is actually happening," Keedron said. "I’m so grateful he took the took the time to post that and keep spreading that message.”

Recycling Advocate Ryan Hickman, 11, Finalist for ‘TIME’s’ Kid of the Year Award

San Juan Capistrano’s Ryan Hickman is a finalist for an award from TIME magazine and Nickelodeon after his recycling efforts. Photo: Courtesy of Ryan Hickman.

Sustainability supporter Ryan Hickman is one of 20 finalists for a new award that recognizes kids bettering their community.

Hickman, an 11-year-old resident of San Juan Capistrano, is in the running for the TIME magazine’s Kid of the Year recognition. The recognition is in conjunction with TIME, TIME for Kids, and Nickelodeon. Hickman is an advocate for recycling and environmentalism through Ryan’s Recycling Company and the nonprofit Project3R.

Ryan started recycling when he was just 3 years old, because he thought it was fun. Ryan said he and his dad recycled plastic bottles from their house and then asked neighbors to also recycle.

“I’m really excited to be nominated as a finalist for TIME and Nickelodeon’s Kid of the Year!” Ryan said. “I think it’s pretty cool to be included with a bunch of amazing kids, and I hope kids everywhere get inspired to follow their dreams, too.”

The top five honorees will be saluted on Dec. 4 during the Kid of the Year TV special on Nickelodeon and related channels, a press release stated.  The ultimate winner will be featured on a cover of TIME, with a companion story in TIME for Kids.

Ryan said he and his dad go around after school and on the weekends to pick up cans and bottles, and he also aims to do a cleanup once a week at Doheny State Beach.

“My story has gone around the world, and millions of people have watched my videos on social media. I’ve recycled nearly 1.2 million cans and bottles since I’ve started,” Ryan said. “I also help support my friends at the Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Laguna Beach by donating money from all my Ryan’s Recycling T-shirts I sell online through my web site.”

Ryan reportedly has raised more than $12,000 so far.

“It’s really easy to make a difference,” Ryan said. “I always tell people to try your best to recycle what you use every day, and if you see a piece of trash on the ground, please pick it up and throw it away. I’m only 11 years old. If I can make a difference, you can, too.”

From 3TV/CSB 5 via AZFamily.com:

Scottsdale 14-year-old could be the first Time, Nickelodeon Kid of the Year

20 finalists give back to their communities

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (3TV/CSB 5) – A Scottsdale 14-year-old is a finalist for the first-ever Kid of the Year honor from Nickelodeon, Time, and Time for Kids.

Dylan Capshaw is a wildlife advocate and an advocate for COVID-19 frontline workers. Arizona’s Family caught up with the teen in early October when he was delivering catered food to fire stations and hospitals across the Valley.

Scottsdale 14-year-old delivering food to frontline workers this month
Back when the pandemic started, he learned how to make masks with a 3D printer and launched a nonprofit foundation called For the Frontline, which sent PPE to frontline workers all over the county.

For the Frontline is not Dylan’s first nonprofit foundation. During Hurricane Harvey in 2017, he established the Dylan Capshaw Wildlife Foundation.

“I saw the need for help coming from outside … all the dogs and animals struggling in the flooding and being abandoned,” he told Scott Pasmore on Thanksgiving. “I knew that even though I was young that it was time to take charge and help out in any way I could.”

Capshaw said his foundation mainly raised money for and awareness of rescue organizations when he first started it.

“I shifted it into rescuing animals myself,” he said. “So, now I have a sanctuary full of rescues, and I actively have a 24/7 phone line.”

When he saw a new need at the beginning of the pandemic, he again stepped up.

“I saw the PPE shortage and all the frontline workers out there helping us, and they couldn’t go home to their families,” he explained. “We sent out thousands of care packages.”

Dylan is one of 20 finalists.

“It’s an honor,” he said. “It’s really amazing. Seeing the other [19] finalists, everybody is so great. … Just to have Nickelodeon and Time Magazine bringing recognition to people making a difference really feels amazing.”

The winner will be featured on the cover of Time.

Dylan said he’d like to keep his animal rescue work going and also is eyeing a career in politics.

The awards show will air on CBS 5 on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m.

Sharif Hamza for TIME

NEW YORK, Dec. 3, 2020 -- TIME, TIME for Kids and Nickelodeon announced 15-year-old scientist and inventor Gitanjali Rao from Colorado as the 2020 Kid of the Year, the multiplatform initiative recognizing extraordinary young leaders who are making a positive impact in their communities.

Selected from a field of more than 5,000, 2020 Kid of the Year Gitanjali Rao is featured on the Dec. 14 cover of TIME, available on newsstands on Friday, Dec. 4.

In an interview with Angelina Jolie for TIME, Rao spoke about her work using technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying: "I don't look like your typical scientist. Everything I see on TV is that it's an older, usually white man as a scientist. It's weird to me that it was almost like people had assigned roles, regarding like their gender, their age, the color of their skin. My goal has really shifted not only from creating my own devices to solve the world's problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well. Because, from personal experience, it's not easy when you don't see anyone else like you. So I really want to put out that message: If I can do it, you can do it, and anyone can do it."

Meet TIME's First-Ever Kid of the Year

The world belongs to those who shape it. And however uncertain that world may feel at a given moment, the reassuring reality seems to be that each new generation produces more of what these kids—five Kid of the Year finalists selected from a field of more than 5,000 Americans, ages 8 to 16—have already achieved: positive impact, in all sizes.

Read about how we picked the Kid of the Year here. And watch TIME’s Kid of the Year broadcast special on Dec. 4 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Nickelodeon.

Kid of the Year: Gitanjali Rao, 15
Lone Tree, Colo.

“Observe, brainstorm, research, build and communicate.” That is what the brilliant young scientist and inventor Gitanjali Rao told actor and activist Angelina Jolie about her process, over Zoom, from her home in Colorado, during a break in her virtual schooling. Just 15 years old, Rao has been selected from a field of more than 5,000 nominees as TIME’s first ever Kid of the Year. She spoke about her astonishing work using technology to tackle issues ranging from contaminated drinking water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying, and about her mission to create a global community of young innovators to solve problems the world over. Even over video chat, her brilliant mind and generous spirit shone through, along with her inspiring message to other young people: don’t try to fix every problem, just focus on one that excites you. “If I can do it,” she said, “anybody can do it.”

Jolie, a TIME contributing editor, is an Academy Award–winning actor and special envoy of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees

ANGELINA JOLIE: When did you know that science was a passion of yours?

GITANJALI RAO: I feel like there wasn’t really one specific aha moment. I was always someone who wanted to put a smile on someone’s face. That was my everyday goal, just to make someone happy. And it soon turned into, How can we bring positivity and community to the place we live? And then when I was in second or third grade, I started thinking about how can we use science and technology to create social change. I was like 10 when I told my parents that I wanted to research carbon nanotube sensor technology at the Denver Water quality research lab, and my mom was like, “A what?” [Editor’s note: they are cylindrical molecules made of carbon atoms that are very sensitive to chemical changes, and thus are good for detecting chemicals in water, among other uses.] It was just that changing factor of, you know this work is going to be in our generation’s hands pretty soon. So if no one else is gonna do it, I’m gonna do it.

AJ: I love that. So much of what my generation should be doing is just making sure we do as little damage as possible to ensure that the next generation can take the lead.

I know one of your latest innovations helps prevent cyberbullying. Could you tell me about that?

GR: It’s a service called Kindly—there’s an app and a Chrome extension—which is able to detect cyberbullying at an early stage, based on artificial-intelligence technology. I started to hard-code in some words that could be considered bullying, and then my engine took those words and identified words that are similar. You type in a word or phrase, and it’s able to pick it up if it’s bullying, and it gives you the option to edit it or send it the way it is. The goal is not to punish. As a teenager, I know teenagers tend to lash out sometimes. Instead, it gives you the chance to rethink what you’re saying so that you know what to do next time around.

AJ: So you just put it on your kids’ phones?

GR: Yeah. I put out a survey to parents, teachers and students, and I honestly expected that students don’t want to be micromanaged.

AJ: Right. My kids would be like, “Don’t touch my phone, I’ll do it myself.”

GR: No, exactly, that’s what I would be like. But a lot of the teenagers were telling me that, you know, it doesn’t seem like I’m being micromanaged; it seems like I’m being given an opportunity to learn from my mistakes. So that’s what I was superexcited about, that they understood what the goal of it was.

AJ: The way you’re talking about technology as a tool to remind people and help them to grow seems like a very new and different thing. It’s so exciting to have such a forward-thinking young, and female, inventor.

Does that affect you in any way? It’s surprising because I think of women as being brilliant, but there are so few women in the science and tech fields.

GR: I don’t look like your typical scientist. Everything I see on TV is that it’s an older, usually white man as a scientist. It’s weird to me that it was almost like people had assigned roles, regarding like their gender, their age, the color of their skin. My goal has really shifted not only from creating my own devices to solve the world’s problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well. Because, from personal experience, it’s not easy when you don’t see anyone else like you. So I really want to put out that message: If I can do it, you can do it, and anyone can do it.

AJ: I know you have these “innovation sessions.” Tell me about those.

Gitanjali Rao loves to problem-solve and experiment with everything from
artificial-intelligence technology to baking | Sharif Hamza for TIME

GR: I just looked at what worked for me and decided to share it with everyone else. So I made this process that I use for everything now: it’s observe, brainstorm, research, build, communicate. It started with a simple presentation and lesson plans, and then I started adding labs and contests that students could do. Now I’ve partnered with rural schools, girls in STEM organizations, museums all across the world, and bigger organizations like Shanghai International Youth Science and Technology group and the Royal Academy of Engineering in London to run innovation workshops.

The students that I work with, they just don’t know where to start. I think that if you give them that spark that they can then build off of, then that changes everything. That means one more person in this world wants to come up with ideas to solve problems.

At the end of every workshop, everyone has something that they can start working on. If you can do this in 45 minutes to an hour, imagine what you can do if you spend months and months working on it. I’m so excited when I get an email like, “Hey, I attended your workshop four months ago and here’s my finished product, I really love it, it’s a shoe that calls 911.”

AJ: That is insanely impressive. For so many young people, it takes a lot to find the confidence to be able to put an idea forward. You have a brilliant mind, clearly, but you are very, very generous with that mind, and that’s just really wonderful. What are you working on now?

GR: I’m currently working on an easy way to help detect bio-contaminants in water—things like parasites. I’m hoping for this to be something that’s inexpensive and accurate so that people in third-world countries can identify what’s in their water.

And I recently hit my goal of 30,000 students who I have mentored, which is superexciting. It’s like creating a community of innovators. I really hope the work that all of these kids are doing identifies innovation as a necessity and not something that’s a choice anymore. I hope I can be a small part of that.

AJ: I think you are. Your generation is unique. You don’t just accept what’s being put forward, but really question it, and that’s so important. I know there are many, many issues we’re facing today. With your work on water contamination, is the environment something that’s very much on your radar?

GR: Yeah. Our generation is facing so many problems that we’ve never seen before. But then at the same time we’re facing old problems that still exist. Like, we’re sitting here in the middle of a new global pandemic, and we’re also like still facing human-rights issues. There are problems that we did not create but that we now have to solve, like climate change and cyberbullying with the introduction of technology.

I think more than anything right now, we just need to find that one thing we’re passionate about and solve it. Even if it’s something as small as, I want to find an easy way to pick up litter. Everything makes a difference. Don’t feel pressured to come up with something big.

Most of my work with the bio-contaminants is based on a gene-based therapy solution which I’m still trying to figure out. I’m also working on a product that helps to diagnose prescription-opioid addiction at an early stage based on protein production of the mu opioid receptor gene. I’ve been really, really interested in genetics. That’s what I like, so that’s what I’m deciding to work on.

AJ: You know, one of the things you pointed out which is so important is that there is so much, you can get overwhelmed. When I started working in refugee camps, there are so many different issues to deal with within a displaced situation. You get overwhelmed, and you don’t really move. I love what you’re saying: find what you’re passionate about, and don’t try to solve everything. Every solution is a part of the bigger picture of what we have to do. I really hear that and appreciate you saying that.

Where do you get your news or do your research?

GR: My pop-culture news is actually MIT Tech Review. I read it constantly. I think that’s really where inspiration strikes: hearing about all these amazing people at schools like MIT and Harvard who are doing such amazing work with technology. And I try to connect it back to what I see out there and put it together in a way that no one’s seen before.

AJ: When you’re not doing all of these amazing things—because I feel like I’m speaking to a 60-year-old scientist in Geneva—what do you do that’s just a 15-year-old thing?

GR: Actually I spend more time doing 15-year-old things during quarantine. I bake an ungodly amount. It’s not good, but it’s baking. And, like, it’s science too.

AJ: So the science of the kitchen is not your specialty?

GR: I guess not, no. To be fair, most of the time we don’t have eggs at home, or like flour, so I have to like go online and search eggless, flourless, sugarless cookies, and then I try to make that. I made bread recently and it was good, so I’m proud of myself.

AJ: Well, I’m just so happy to get to know you a little bit. I’m sure I’ll be using your inventions in years to come and just being in awe of you as I watch you do more and more in your life, and I can say, “I met her once.”

Tyler Gordon first made his mark with celebrity portraits Andrew Toth—Nickelodeon

Tyler Gordon, 14
San Jose, Calif.

High school freshman Tyler Gordon has faced more challenges than some people experience in a lifetime. He used a wheelchair for nearly two years after breaking bones in his legs and hips because of a vitamin D deficiency. He was born deaf and underwent a surgery at age 5 that gave him some hearing, but he still speaks with a stutter. In elementary school, he got bullied so much that he barely spoke.

“His escape was to not speak at all; he’d nod his head or point, he was so afraid,” says Gordon’s mother Nicole Kindle.

But at 10, Gordon found his artistic voice. After watching his mom paint, he decided to try it himself and won first place in a school art contest with a portrait he’d made of the principal. In the four years since, he’s painted more than 500 portraits of Black icons who inspire him, most recently Vice President–elect Kamala Harris, who called him right before Thanksgiving to tell him he’s “amazing” and has a “gift.”

“Sometimes I can’t talk and get words out, so I speak through my art,” Gordon says. Painting helps him move past the bullying, which he still experiences; he lost a front tooth in one incident earlier this year. “It helps me take my mind somewhere else. I don’t want to keep thinking about that same moment for the rest of my life.”

His big break came in 2018, when his portrait of NBA star Kevin Durant went viral and caught the eye of the player’s mother, who bought it for $300. Celebrities started calling for commissions. Among the stars he’s painted and met are Janet Jackson, Kevin Hart, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez. In 2019, a portrait of the Central Park Five fetched more than $100,000 at auction, and he won a 2020 Global Child Prodigy Award. This past summer, in the wake of George Floyd’s death, Gordon used his canvas to raise awareness about victims of police brutality, feeling a particular affinity to 23-year-old Elijah McClain, who also had special needs and an artistic side.

Media interviews and speaking engagements have helped Gordon combat his fear of public speaking, and he hosts virtual painting classes every Wednesday on Instagram, where he boasts nearly 50,000 followers.

“Since he started painting, I can’t get the kid to be quiet,” says Kindle. “He’s not afraid of the stutter anymore.” Now, by starting his own online platform for video tutorials called Tongue Tye’d, he hopes he can show other kids how to overcome their challenges with art as well. —Olivia B. Jordan Reeves runs Make Just Right, a youth design consultancy, through
her nonprofit Andrew Toth—Nickelodeon

Jordan Reeves, 14
Columbia, Mo.

For Jordan Reeves, having a limb difference has helped her envision a more accessible world. The 14-year-old designer and activist was born with a left arm that stopped growing beneath her elbow, a physical difference that helped ignite her passion for design. In the past four years, Reeves has created a 3-D-printable prosthesis for kids that shoots out biodegradable sparkles, consulted for companies like Mattel to create toys that affirm limb difference and even co-written a memoir about what she’s learned from growing up with a disability.

Reeves sees good design as an avenue to empower those with disabilities, which is why she and her mother co-founded Born Just Right, a nonprofit that celebrates kids with physical differences and gives them design and STEM resources so they can come up with their own solutions.

“A lot of kids with disabilities have a different point of view on the world, because the world isn’t made for us really,” she says. “We have this great design mindset because we grow up problem-solving. It’s a pretty cool thing.” But one of the biggest barriers she sees kids facing is finding the confidence to innovate. “It’s so important to believe in yourself,” she says. She found her confidence with the help of her mother, and by seeing the positive results of some of her early work. “[When I started,] I was just 10 and I was able to make an impact, which is so cool,” she says. “Go for it, don’t doubt yourself, don’t think about what other people think—you can make change no matter how big or how small.”

Although 2020 has brought new challenges, it hasn’t slowed Reeves down. She’s been hosting digital-design workshops for Born Just Right, appeared at the United State of Women conference to advocate for gender equity, and was the youngest of 30 global leaders recognized this summer at a 30th-anniversary commemoration of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act. She also co-founded the Steam Squad, an online organization that gets kids involved in science, technology, engineering, math and the arts. Up next: working with Microsoft to design a guitar that anyone with mobility challenges can play.

She’s inspired, she says, by the tenacity of her generation. “It’s so sick knowing that I’m a part of a group of people who are working toward the future,” Reeves says. “The world needs a lot of work at times, and it’s important to be there to do as much as you can.” —Cady Lang

In addition to her work in the art world, Bellen Woodard also aspires to be
an astronaut and President of the U.S. Britton Orrange—Nickelodeon

Bellen Woodard, 10
Leesburg, Va.

Bellen Woodard is only 10 years old, but she’s on a mission for inclusion. She has created her own line of crayons in tones that reflect the wide spectrum of skin colors she sees in the world, claiming the title of world’s first crayon activist.

The idea came when one of Woodard’s classmates asked her for a “skin color” crayon. Woodard, who was the only Black student in her grade, says she knew the classmate meant the peach-color crayon. When she told her mother Tosha Woodard about what had happened, Tosha suggested that she pass her classmate a brown crayon instead next time. “But I didn’t want to do that,” Woodard says. “I told her next time I was actually going to ask what color they want because it could be lots of different colors.” Then she got to work making a set of 12 “skin color” crayons.

Although research shows that children can begin to understand and believe racial stereotypes by age 4, an August study by researchers at Skidmore College and Boston University found that parents often delay conversations about race with children because they under-estimate children’s ability to understand the concept. Tosha says her daughter’s crayons have proved a great age-appropriate tool to spread a message of inclusion.

In spring 2019, Woodard launched More Than Peach, a nonprofit that has donated more than $40,000 worth of multicultural crayons and sketchbooks to schoolchildren across the country. Her packet of crayons has been added to the permanent collection at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture.

Woodard says she was surprised by how quickly her message spread. She started by simply talking to her teacher about the crayons, then they were picked up by the rest of her school, and now she gets calls to speak—and distribute her crayons—at schools across the country. In March, she received a special recognition from the Virginia state legislature for her work.

Woodard’s crayons are named for things found in nature—there’s “Sahara” and “Reef,” “Koko” and “Serengeti”—but each is also clearly labeled “skin color.”

“I wanted to have crayons for a purpose,” she says. “The peach crayon is a skin color … but is it the only one? No, it isn’t. My different shades of peaches and browns can hopefully match everyone including me and my friends and my classmates. Just everyone.” —Jasmine Aguilera

Ian McKenna’s favorite thing to grow is chilies, which he uses to make salsa Britton Orrange—Nickelodeon

Ian McKenna, 16
Austin, Texas

Ian McKenna was in third grade when he learned that nearly a quarter of the kids at his Austin school weren’t getting enough to eat at home. He wanted to help, but local volunteer organizations turned him away, saying he was too young. So he decided to find his own solution. For years, he had been gardening with his mother, and they often distributed their extra vegetables to the neighbors. Why not give the produce to a soup kitchen? “Then I thought, I’m good at gardening,” says McKenna, now 16. “Maybe I could try to start a garden that’s meant solely to help feed these people who are in need.” Better yet, he thought, why not plant a garden at school, so that kids in need could take food home?

McKenna persuaded his school to set aside space for a garden, then he asked the community for donations of seeds and equipment. Other students donated their time. Within months, McKenna’s garden was producing lettuces, spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash for students and their families. Now, seven years later, McKenna’s Giving Garden project has expanded to five area schools in addition to his own backyard garden, and he has provided more than 20,000 lb. of organic produce (enough for 25,000 meals) to Austin families and food pantries.

For most of his gardening activities, McKenna wears the same T-shirt in different colors, emblazoned with what has become a personal motto: BE A GOOD HUMAN. To him, that means helping in any way you can, no matter your age. Even a smile can make a difference in someone’s life, he says. “It lets them know that they are important. It can change their day.”

When COVID-19 hit the U.S., McKenna redoubled his efforts, cooking up to 100 meals out of his home to distribute to the hungry on the weekends, so that he could give them one less thing to worry about. When social distancing meant that volunteers couldn’t work on community garden plots, he started offering online tutorials and a gardening hotline so families could grow at home. Once he realized that some people didn’t know how to prepare the more unusual vegetables in his gardens, like the 100-lb. bullet head wax melons he distributes by the slice, he started offering virtual cooking classes (the melons cook, and taste, like zucchini). While gardening is his core focus, McKenna says he is always looking for new ways to help the hungry. “Hunger doesn’t stop,” he says. “So I won’t stop until it does.” —Aryn Baker

TIME names 15-year-old scientist and inventor Gitanjali Rao it's first ever Kid of the Year

Time magazine has selected 15-year-old scientist and inventor Gitanjali Rao as its first-ever Kid of the Year.

The magazine has named a Person of the Year for 92 years and in 2019, Greta Thunberg became the youngest person to ever receive the honor. Before Thunberg, the youngest recipient was 25-year-old Charles Lindbergh in 1927.

This year, Time partnered with Nickelodeon to search social media and school districts across the country to find the most influential kid of 2020.

The list was narrowed down from 5,000 young Americans to five finalists who will each receive a cash prize and be given a chance to contribute to the magazine. The short list includes artist Tyler Gordon, 14, designer and activist Jordan Reeves, 14, world’s first crayon activist Bellen Woodard, 10, and youth hunger activist Ian McKenna, 16.

“Small steps can lead to big change,” TIME for Kids editor Andrea Delbanco said in a statement. “These are everyday kids making change in their communities in a fun and accessible—but very impactful—way.”

Rao told Angelina Jolie in an interview for Time she was ten years old when she became interested in carbon nanotube sensor technology, molecules which can detect chemicals in water. At age 11, she won the Young Scientist Challenge for creating a device that can detect lead in drinking water with the help of a mobile app. Last year, she was named to Forbes 30 under 30 list.

She's also developed an app and Chrome extension called Kindly which uses artificial-intelligence technology to detect cyberbullying at an early stage, she told Time.

Rao said she has developed an interest in genetics and is working on a way to detect bio-contaminants like parasites in water and a product to diagnose prescription-opioid addiction early on.

She told the magazine she has also partnered with rural schools, STEM organizations and museums around the world to run innovation workshops to help young students develop their own inventions. She said she's mentored more than 30,000 students.

"My goal has really shifted not only from creating my own devices to solve the world’s problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well," she said. "Because, from personal experience, it’s not easy when you don’t see anyone else like you."

The popular pre-school animated series, Kid-E-Cats is making its way to the collectables space thanks to a new pan-European partnership between the brand’s owner CTC Media and the stickers and trading cards specialist, Panini.

The partnership, facilitated by APC Kids, will cover the UK and Ireland, Benelux, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, the Nordics, Greece, CEE, and Turkey. Across each of the territories, Panini will produce stickers, trading cards, and photocard collectables for the series.

Additionally, in Germany, Spain, and Italy, Panini will create sticker books and magazines, as well as publish a series of children’s books across Spain and Germany.

Lionel Marty, managing director of APC Kids, said: “We are delighted to welcome Panini on board for Kid-E-Cats and are confident in the expertise they will bring to the partnership as we strengthen and support our merchandise offering for the series as it continues to grow in popularity worldwide.”

Lluís Torrent Suñé, managing director of Panini Espana, added: “We have a long history of creating engaging content for kids all over the world and with harnessing the synergies that exist with APC Kids and CTC Media, we are excited to bring the Kid-E-Cats Collectible products to the marketplace.

“We feel privileged to be selected to work on such a cute and funny television series and look forward to working alongside APC Kids to create a complete program of Publishing products in selected countries such as Spain.”

Kid-E-Cats follows the adventures of three kittens, Cookie, Pudding, and Candy, who are always ready to jump into action with enthusiasm and energy. Their imaginations make them capable of some absurd problem-solving suggestions, while through life’s lessons they learn to look before they leap.

A third season is now ready to broadcast, while series one and two are currently available on Nick Jr. internationally in over 170 territories following a partnership between APC Kids and Nickelodeon International that was signed in 2017. A further ten special episodes will be broadcast soon.

Ksenia Gordienko, director of animation, CТС media, said: “We have a very successful partnership with Panini in Russia on our Kid-E-Cats brand and we truly hope that this success will be scaled in other European territories. Growing the brand across Europe together with such respected partner like Panini is a great pleasure and honour for us.”

Growing the brand across Europe together with such respected partner like Panini is a great pleasure and honour for us!”

KID-E-CATS tells the story of three kittens: Cookie, Pudding and their kid sister Candy who are forever ready to jump into action with endless enthusiasm and energy. Their imagination also knows no bounds, and these kitties are capable of the most absurdly funny problem-solving suggestions. Through life’s little lessons, they learn to look before they leap – well sometimes!

The third season is completed and series one and two are currently available on Nick Jr internationally in over 170 territories following a deal signed between APC Kids and Nickelodeon International in 2017. 10 special episodes will also be available soon.

Nickelodeon Expands the World of Henry Danger With All-New Danger Force Spinoff
New Live-Action Series to Premiere October 2020 on Nickelodeon Poland

Danger Force Introduces New Superhero Cast, Features Original Henry Danger Cast Members Cooper Barnes and Michael D. Cohen Reprising Their Fan-Favorite Roles

Share it: @Nickelodeon @HenryDanger #DangerForce

Nickelodeon is expanding the world of the number-one kids’ series, Henry Danger, with the launch of Danger Force, a brand-new original live-action spinoff premiering Monday 16th November 2020 at 19:00 on Nickelodeon Poland (Polska)!

Created and executive produced by Christopher J. Nowak (Henry Danger, Sam & Cat), the new series stars two of the most beloved characters from Henry Danger, “Ray/Captain Man” (Cooper Barnes) and “Schwoz” (Michael D. Cohen), and introduces four new superheroes-in-training as they team up to fight crime in their town of Swellview. Danger Force (13 episodes) is produced by Barnes and Jace Norman (Henry Danger), and production for the series is currently underway.

Following launch, new episodes of Danger Force will continue to air weekdays at 19:00 on Nickelodeon Polska.

Leading up to the premiere of Danger Force, Nick Polska will premiere the series finale of Henry Danger (Niebezpieczny Henryk) on Tuesday 10th November 2020 from 18:45.

Update (30/11) - Nickelodeon Polska recently premiered The Substitute, locally titled Zastępstwo!

“A key part of our content strategy is to grow original franchises like Henry Danger by expanding their worlds through new characters and more high-stakes adventures,” said Brian Robbins, President, Kids & Family Entertainment, ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks. “We’re spinning off our Henry Danger mega-hit into Danger Force, where a new set of characters join members of the original cast for a wholly new take on this long-running series.”

In Danger Force, four kids--Chapa (Havan Flores), Miles (Terrence Little Gardenhigh), Mika (Dana Heath) and Bose (Luca Luhan)--are recruited to attend Swellview Academy for the Gifted (SW.A.G. for short), a school conceived by Captain Man and brought to life by Schwoz, after having been accidentally mutated in the fight to save Swellview. While there, the kids must learn to harness their frequently troublesome and sometimes uncontrollable superpowers as they begin to fight crime. Despite the dangerous circumstances of their new lives, the superheroes must keep their real identities a secret from both from their families and the villains who are out to destroy them.

Danger Force’s four brand-new superheroes-in-training were introduced in the final episodes of Henry DangerHenry Danger is Nick’s longest running live-action sitcom, with 128 episodes across five seasons. For 2019 and year to date, the series is the number-one show for Kids 6-11 on all TV.

Production of Danger Force is overseen for Nickelodeon by Shauna Phelan, Senior Vice President, Live-Action Scripted Content. Omar Camacho serves as Nickelodeon’s Executive in Charge of Production for the series.

Danger Force made its world premiere on Nickelodeon USA on Saturday, March 28, at 8 p.m. (ET/PT).

Danger Force underscores a key element of Nickelodeon's content strategy, to build and expand the worlds of its enormously popular franchises like Henry Danger, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Blue's Clues & You!, among others, to give audiences more of what they love. Nick's new content slate is informed by the network's ongoing research and insights into today's generation of kids, who: are the most diverse generation ever and expect to see themselves authentically represented in media and in the world around them; want to make a positive difference in the world as they grow up; consider social media stars as their top role models, alongside their parents; and increasingly meet their much-desired need for family time by co-viewing entertainment content together.

'Avatar: Last Airbender' Zuko Actor Confirms He Has Talked To Live-Action Show Creators

This post was originally published on Sunday, July 19, 2020, before Avatar: The Last Airbender co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko announced that they were leaving Netflix's live-action adaptation.

Dante Basco, who voiced Zuko on Avatar: The Last Airbender, has confirmed that he's talked to the series creators about the live-action adaptation!

Dante Basco, who voiced the fan favorite Prince Zuko on Avatar: The Last Airbender, has confirmed that he's talked to series creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko about the upcoming live-action adaptation. Avatar has already been adapted into live-action form before with M. Night Shayamalan's The Last Airbender, but to say it didn't go well would be putting it lightly. Fans of the beloved animated series were heavily displeased with the changes made in creating The Last Airbender, from cramming an entire season's worth of storylines into one movie to pronouncing certain characters' names wrong. There was a palpable weariness among the fan base when Netflix announced its intention to create a new live-action Avatar series, but the news that DiMartino and Konietzko are involved helped win people over.

Now fans are eagerly awaiting any updates they can come by for this new Avatar series, but so far progress has been slow, hampered even further by the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic. Casting hasn't even been announced for the series, though the creators promised to hire actors of color for the Asian-influenced show. One character bound to get extra scrutiny is Zuko, who has emerged as one of the most beloved characters on Avatar. Zuko begins Avatar as one of the main villains before undergoing an excellent redemption arc that allows him to become a true hero.

Basco, who is also best known for playing Rufio in Hook, sat down with Screen Rant to talk about his upcoming Twitch series Artificial. Inevitably, the subject of Avatar and its latest live-action attempt came up. First, Basco expressed his enthusiasm for Avatar's newfound popularity (now that it is available on Netflix again) before saying, "So I’m really excited to be a part of the Avatar family, and that’s coming back in live-action, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that and continuing to see what happens with the story." When SR asked if there's anyone Basco would like to see play Zuko, he said this:

"I don’t know specifically who I would want to see play Zuko. All of that is dependent upon how you cast the whole gang and how the world works out. I’m just excited that Mike [DiMartino] and Bryan [Konietzko] are at the helm of it all, and we’ve had some conversations. They know I’m here as part of the family to help out in any way, and we’ll see as it gets closer how the whole cast comes together. I’m excited as much as anybody else."

Hearing that Basco might have some kind of role in the new Avatar series is certainly welcome news, especially to those who are fans of his performance in the original series. While Basco can't play Zuko, he could surely fill a different role, either as a recurring character or simply a cameo role. He’s too young to play Iroh, Zuko’s cheery uncle who somehow manages to coach the angry young man through his issues, but he might be a good fit for Commander Zhao, a Fire Nation military man who chases the Avatar throughout the first season. Or maybe he could just be there as a consultant. Either way, it will be a thrill for fans to see Basco return to the world of Avatar. Beyond Zuko, Basco joined the sequel series The Legend of Korra to voice Zuko's grandson Iroh.

Hopefully more people from the original series can get involved with the live-action Avatar. Everyone's favorite cabbage merchant has already expressed his interest in appearing somehow, and more might join as the series ramps up production. It's likely that Avatar is still in the development stages, but things might move quicker now that the animated show has gotten more attention with its move to Netflix. It's only a matter of time until Netflix reveals more about this highly-anticipated show.

From Game Fragger:

AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER Star Dante Basco Discusses His Role On Twitch's ARTIFICIAL

With Avatar: The Last Airbender officially on Netflix, we caught up with Prince Zuko voice actor Dante Basco to see what he had to say about his new series Artificial: Remote Intelligence! Hit the jump!

When Avatar: The Last Airbender premiered on Nickelodeon, the series not only acted as a gateway for young viewers to explore different types of animation style but it also gave the world a very layered and dramatic story with amazing characters. One of the best examples of that was fire bender Prince Zuko.

Zuko's character arc has been one of the best examples of a three-dimensional character since someone like Vegeta or Loki. The inner struggle he goes through while finding his path makes him one of the best characters in the series. However, none of that could have been achieved without a talented voice to make him come to life.

For over a decade, without many knowing it, voice actor Dante Basco has been impacting the minds of many people with his extensive voice work over the years. From beginning his career as Rufio, leader of the lost boys in Hook, to hunting down the Avatar as Prince Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender. Basco has been apart of many childhoods and helped create some of the most memorable stories of the modern age.

Most recently, his work on the interactive Twitch show Artificial: Remote Intelligence has seen the actor take on a new challenge in entertainment, a series that the fans actively create! We recently caught up with him on Comic Book Movie to hear his thoughts about the show. Give it a look below, and don't forget to give the audio interview a listen at the end!

Joe: So how do you like it on the show? I know you haven't been on very long.

Dante Basco: I just started, I mean we just did the first character building episode and so I'm really excited. I really have never done anything like this outside of theater. It feels like theater in a digital age, so I'm pretty excited to see how the whole process goes and I'm looking forward to working with Bernie, I'm a big fan of his.

Joe: I tuned in the other day when the fans were working on making your character so I'm curious to know which facets of your character you were surprised to receive?

Dante Basco: You know, I can't remember all of the characteristics but the whole thing is a new experience, and it's kind of like putting together a D&D character but with thousands of people together.

Joe: And that's funny because when I talked to Bernie he had mentioned that you likened the process to character creation in D&D. Do you feel like your experience playing D&D has helped you with the off-the-cuff and interactive nature of Artificial?

Dante Basco: Yeah totally, I think it's going to. I'm not a big D&D player, I sort of got back into it a few years ago when working with Rooster Teeth. I just realized as I got back into improv and involved in shows like Critical Roll with my friends Laura and Travis.

Joe: Is that Laura Bailey and Travis Willingham?

Dante Basco: Yeahhh!

Joe: Yeah see, I know my voice actors! So, I'm curious - Twitch is a perfect platform for the concept of Artificial. Were you familiar with Twitch before taking on this role or is it something you're new to?

Dante Basco: I'm definitely familiar with Twitch, you know, I have a channel called Honor Society in which me and my stream team play video games on Twitch and currently we're doing a Let's Watch of Avatar: The Last Airbender every Friday at 3pm PST. We're raising money for direct relief for COVID frontliners. We have Phil Lamar and Greg Baldwin and a lot of the stars from Avatar on there for good causes.

Joe: I love that! They sent me one of those 15th-anniversary Avatar: The Last Airbender steelbooks, and those are amazing and beautiful!

Dante Basco: They're great, I have one too.

Joe: Yeah, I figured you have one, haha, I have it sitting up on a shelf and it's one of the coolest things I have now.

Dante Basco: That's awesome, man.

Joe: Back to Artificial. When I was chatting with Jennifer Field and some of the other cast members they mentioned they like to hop in the chat under secret screen names. Is that something you like to do?

Dante Basco: You know, I've never done that. You know, with the technology there is a lot of things going on so for me to just be present is one thing. You kind of feel like you're Captain Kirk on the brig of the Starshiip Enterprise and you gotta run everything, especially now during COVID where I don't have my tech guys with me or anything and I'm running everything myself.

Joe: Now, I know you're still getting used to your character, but what can you tell us about what the audience has built for you? What's your character's name again?

Dante Basco: My character's name is Zander. He's gonna be a rival to Sebastian, who is the owner of the company. And I'm a childhood friend that's coming back into his life and I'm just as eager as everyone else is to find out how I fit into this story and what kind of mischief and mayhem I'm going to bring to these characters. For me it's almost like a soap opera kind of thing which is really interesting because I haven't done any soap operas since the 80's and 90's. I did Santa Barbara for NBC back in the day and then I did a short run show for MTV back in the day, I forget the name of it. So doing soap operas are fun, there's all these different facets of filmmaking like with film television.

Joe: You've mentioned your experience in theater. What kind of experience in theater to you have that help prepare you for this?

Dante Basco: Yeah, well you know, I'm theater trained. You know, I studied theater and acting classes for over twenty years, you know? So that's a big part of my training, doing live theater and everything from Shakespheare to modern plays, and I even wrote a play. So I'm very excited to get back into a live setting and act live, it's going to be really great.

Joe: That's awesome. So have you always been into sci-fi stuff then, your whole life?

Dante Basco: Totally, I grew up in the 80's and 90's. Star Wars and Star Trek and even Harry Potter and Hook even, you know that's fantasy and stuff? And with Terminator, Skynet ended the world and that's my birthday August 29th.

Joe: That's funny, that's one month away from my birthday, July 29th.

Dante Basco: That's my mother's birthday!

Joe: We Leos are special people, man! Is there anything else you'd like to share about Artificial or any of your other projects?

Dante Basco: Yeah, just that I'm excited about Artificial. Beyond that I do have my memoirs book out right now From Rufio to Zuko and I'll be touring for that as soon as the COVID restrictions let up. I also have my first project with the Filipino Brothers, hopefully in the fourth quarter of this year.

HOOK Exclusive: Rufio Actor Dante Basco Discusses Prequel Film, BANGARANG

We recently spoke with Hook actor Dante Basco about his new role in Twitch's Artificial: Remote Intelligence, and we couldn't pass up the chance to chat about Rufio! Check out everything the actor said!

Steven Spielberg is responsible for a number of classic films over the years, including the likes of Jaws, Jurassic Park, E.T., and even Hook. In regards to the latter, we recently spoke with Dante Basco, the actor who is best-known for having portrayed Rufio in the film.

Basco has gained additional fame for such roles as Prince Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender, and he was recently cast in Twitch's scripted sci-fi interactive series Artificial: Remote Intelligence. When we spoke to Dante about his experience on the show, we couldn't help but to ask a few questions about his time acting alongside Robin Williams.

In addition to learning some interesting tidbits about the movie, we also asked about the prequel that Basco worked on called Bangarang. Check out what the actor had to say below!

Joe: I was chatting with my friend Noah, and he had told me a little bit about a short film you had done called Bangarang which is a prequel for Rufio. Can you tell me a little bit about that?

Dante Basco: Oh yeah! I was approached by some filmmakers, Jonah Feingold, who is a USC Grad with his production team. He grew up with Hook and it's one of his favorite films so we met at a club in Los Angelos and he pitched me the full short and I said let's collaborate and do it! So we raised some money for it and it actually went viral so now there are some things in the works for the development and finishing a Rufio origin story.

Joe: That's awesome man, everyone loves Rufio!

Dante Basco: Yeah man, if we can get that off the ground, that'll be awesome. I think people will be pretty excited about it.

Joe: Yeah, definitely. I think Rufio is the perfect entry point to revive this franchise for a younger generation.

Dante Basco: Totally.

Joe: Now we had talked a little before about how Robin Williams helped you get into poetry. I was curious about the scene where the two of you traded insults back and forth and whether that was off-the-cuff or if it was scripted? And how many takes did it take?

Dante Basco: It was scripted! I don't remember all the takes with it being so long ago, but it was definitely a full day's work. It was scripted, but you know with the way Robin is, he's really like the godfather of improv for film and television, at least at that time he was one of the pioneers doing all of that. So we had to be on our toes to do the scripted version and then to just roll with it and keep up with someone who has such world renown, you know, he was one of the greats.

Joe: Sure, and speaking of greats, what was it like to act under Steven Speilberg at such a young age?

Dante Basco: Yeah, I mean, again, I was very fortunate to be amongst some of the literal legends and gods of our industry and I didn't take it lightly you know? I was fifteen at the time and I had been studying since I was ten so I knew who all of those people were and I was a huge fan of things like E.T. and Close Encounters and so many things, especially with Robin Williams. So many things were going on and I was there watching. And you know, with Dustin Hoffman being one of the greats, I would just come to set on my days off in order to study and watch the greats work.

Joe: And your hard work definitely paid off. Which would you say you get recognized for more, Rufio or Prince Zuko?

Dante Basco: Thanks man. It's a generational thing. I think for my whole life I've been "Rufio" to the world at large longer than I haven't been. So I can get into Bangarang chats any day of the week and I think a lot of people recognize me as Rufio, as a "90's baby". And then the newer generation that knows me as Prince Zuko is kind of a phenomenon that happened 15 years later, so honestly it's kind of even depending on where I'm at and the generation of people that I'm around.

From Winter Is Coming:

The Last Airbender star talks Zuko-Kylo Ren comparisons

Dante Basco, who played Prince Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender, sees similarities between Zuko and Kylo Ren from Star Wars, but some big differences too.

Dante Basco, the actor who voiced Prince Zuko in Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender, knows a thing or two about redemption arcs. After all, his character does a major 180-degree turn between seasons 2 and 3 of The Last Airbender, going from one of the Avatar’s greatest foes to one of his Bending masters — and eventually one of his best friends.

Zuko’s redemption arc has been lauded for how it handled the character’s change of heart, something that not every franchise accomplishes successfully. Star Wars fans have all borne witness to Kylo Ren’s redemption in the most recent film trilogy, a storyline that’s received quite a bit of backlash from fans who felt it was rushed or poorly developed.

And Basco, who is a big Star Wars fan himself, has had plenty of people tell him that Zuko reminds them of Kulo Ren, and vice versa. Speaking with Inverse, the actor discussed the similarities…and the differences.

Although Zuko and Kylo do have a lot in common when it comes to their demeanor — they’re surly, morose, angry — there’s no denying that Kylo’s actions have been considerably worse. Basco suggested that the Sith wouldn’t have been able to redeem himself the same way as Zuko did, and that the the only way for Kylo’s story to end was with his death. “We’ve seen the whole thing by now, but I said early in the game: He [Kylo Ren] has to die to get redeemed,” Basco explained. “He killed Han Solo. Zuko didn’t kill Ozai, and Ozai is not Han Solo.”

Basco makes a good point about how deeply over to the Dark Side Kylo went. Zuko, thankfully, never fell that far. And if anything, Fire Lord Ozai, Zuko’s father, arguably deserved Han Solo’s fate more than our favorite scruffy-looking nerf herder did.

Basco also had a suggestion for how The Rise of Skywalker could have improved Kylo’s arc, and it sounds like it takes a leaf out of The Last Airbender’s book. “Just have all the Jedi talk to Kylo Ren!” he said, reminding us of the way Anng would talk to his Avatar ancestors. “Get his grandfather to talk to him from the spirit realm! He’ll tell him what’s up!”

Plenty of fans were hoping for an Anakin cameo, so perhaps Lucasfilm should have consulted Basco. And given how much Kylo looked up to his grandfather, it might have helped him escape Snoke’s and Palpatine’s clutches sooner. Unfortunately, Kylo Ren wasn’t destined to have the redemption arc that Zuko had — though both villains will undoubtedly remain icons.

Speaking of The Last Airbender, several of the creatives behind it and spinoff show The Legend of Korra got together this past weekend for a panel at Comic-Con@Home where they discussed why the series has remained beloved years after it ended. “I feel like Avatar both shaped and broke the mold for an entire generation of creatives,” said author F.C. Yee. “It inspired so much of us, it’s just where our heads go when we think about what we really love and what we would like to be like and, you know, what depths we would like to accomplish as creative professionals.”

It’s established that it’s a living world, it’s got a past, it’s got a future, it’s got a present and any time you dip in for a particular story for part of that timeline, it’s alive, it’s going to evolve over time. It evolved from all the worldbuilding that the show had.

Mike DiMartino, who created the show with Bryan Konietzko, feels lucky that the show was even made, let alone still enjoyed today. “At the time doing a kind of continuous story in kids animation was not a thing that was happening,” he said. “It was common in Japan, but not in the US and certainly not on Nickelodeon, they were kind of confused by what we were making. But to their credit, they were like alright, you guys seem to know what you’re doing so we’ll let you run with this idea. I think part of the reason why now that the original series is on Netflix, why it’s doing so well is that it kind of fits that format already. Even though there’s standalone episodes, it’s a continuous storyline.”

Meanwhile, for comic creator Faith Erin Hicks, it’s the characters that really made this story sing. “I feel like Toph in particular was such a big deal for me,” she remembered. “I was this huge tomboy as a kid, and now I feel like we’re having this huge surge of women in animation and female characters and animated shows with female leads that’s incredibly important. But earlier in the 90s, in the aughts, it felt like that was incredibly rare to have this strong, tough, tomboy female character in an animated show. And also to have a show with multiple female leads—we had Katara, we had Toph, we had Azula, we had Mei, we had Ty Lee, there were so many women in this show. That was something that really spoke to my heart as someone who worked in animation… and watching the characters grow and transition and change over the course of three seasons, it was so unusual. And that’s why I continued to return to that show and continue to be inspired by it, and wanting to put that heart and that empathy into my own work. It was so different.”

And those characters continue to delight people even today! Dark Horse just announced a new standalone comic about Toph, to be released on February 16, 2021 [...]

And then there’s the live-action series coming to Netflix. Yep, The Last Airbender has a lot of fight in it yet.

THE ASIAN CULTURAL ALLIANCE PRESENTS: DANTE BASCO

On Nov. 16, Loyola’s African, Latinx, Asian, and Native American Services (ALANA) and Asian Cultural Alliance (ACA) hosted a Q&A webinar with actor, writer, producer, and director Dante Basco. ACA executive board members Kayte Rooney ‘22 and Carly Dacanay ‘23 hosted the event and asked Basco questions during the hour-long webinar. Basco spoke of his career thus far working as a prominent Asian-American actor in Hollywood, more general Asian-American representation in the industry today, as well as projects he currently has in development.

Dante Basco is a well-known Filipino-American actor, writer, producer, and director known specifically for his roles as Rufio in the 1991 film “Hook” and as the voice of Prince Zuko in the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” He is also recognized as the voice of Jake Long in Disney’s animated series “American Dragon: Jake Long” and has worked as a producer and director for multiple projects. Basco has an extremely impressive resume, spanning over 30 years in the business.

The event began with ALANA’s opening remarks, including a reiteration of their mission statement, and moved to acknowledge the land of Indigenous Peoples upon which the country, and Baltimore specifically, resides.

Basco first spoke of his start in Hollywood in the early 1990s. At this time, Asian-Americans were extremely underrepresented in the industry. According to Basco, he would meet people who didn’t know “what a Filipino was.”  For a long time, the only Asian-American representation on screen was the character Long Duk Dong in the 1984 film “Sixteen Candles,” which is now recognized as a racist stereotype of the Asian community. Basco remarked that people today approach him and say that his portrayal of Rufio in “Hook” was the first positive Asian-American representation in Hollywood.

“People that grew up watching the work I did, they’ll be like, ‘You’re the first cool Asian I’ve ever seen on film and television,’” Basco said. He spoke of coming onto the film scene with the possibility to show more dimensions of what it is to be Asian in America. When Basco met Jon M. Chu, the director of “Crazy Rich Asians” (2018), Chu told him seeing him as Rufio “made [him] feel like [he] could be part of Hollywood.”

Basco later talked about his experience working for the Nickelodeon animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” When Basco was first informed of the project, he said he didn’t think it would be picked up. He remarked that the show was so unlike Nickelodeon’s other projects at the time. Their biggest animated shows to date were “Spongebob” and “CatDog” and, when reading the script of an epic hero story placed in an Asian-inspired folklore adventure, Basco was surprised.

“When I was doing it I had a lot of great fun, it was really cool, but then I didn’t really understand the impact it was having when it came out,” Basco said.

At the time, Basco was filming another project in Toronto and recording remotely for Prince Zuko. His first inclination of the show’s success was when another 21-year-old actor on set caught wind that Basco was working for “Avatar.” Basco recalled that, when the other actor heard, “he started freaking out. And this was an adult… he said, ‘That’s my show.’”

Basco remarked that little by little, the show started seeing the phenomenon of what “Avatar” became.

Recently, the series has regained popularity after Netflix uploaded it to its streaming service in May. Shortly thereafter, it hit no. 1 on Netflix. Speaking of its resurgence, Basco said the whole cast was fascinated. He partially attributes its popularity to the world climate of today.

“I think the story of ‘Avatar’ is just a great story… But especially in a year like this where we’re talking about balancing the world out, talking about government stuff… ‘Avatar’ is this unique cartoon that tackles so many big, big issues in a light-hearted way, in a way kids can digest it, and also adults can digest it,” he said.

Basco closed the webinar by talking about the status of Asian-American representation today. He references the movement of the last few years for more Asian filmmaking and storytelling. Today, Asians in Hollywood are at the highest profile they’ve been since the beginning of the industry. The 2018 film “Crazy Rich Asians” caused a paradigm shift in film. But Basco mentioned that the work is not close to done. He stated that the Asian-American community must lay the groundwork in order to reach long-term goals of perpetual representation.

“Some of it is working with studios and getting studio films made, another is independent films. We shouldn’t have a ‘Crazy Rich Asians’ film out… once a year. We should have a film that comes out every month,” Basco said. He ended with a message to young Asian-American filmmakers and artists: keep the fight for better representation alive.

Event moderator and president Rooney remarked on the event afterward. She said:

“The Dante Basco x ACA event was such a success and it is largely due to the amazing work of the ACA’s  Executive Board. The board worked as a team to get everything in place. I have to highlight the work of ACA’s Vice President, Kelley Chan as she was an integral part of the event’s success. She took on the role of contacting Basco’s publicist and was the main line of communication between ACA and Basco’s team, with the assistance of ALANA’s Assistant Director, Julie Rivera…. [The Executive Board] put in so much work for this event and I can’t thank them enough for all their hard work this semester. We hoped that this event would help highlight the importance of Asian American representation in the media in all its various formats but also bring some joy as Basco has impacted many student’s childhoods. As the semester ends, ACA wanted to have our last event be something memorable to all and we hoped it made the semester seem a little brighter.”

Attendees of the event agree with Rooney’s sentiments. Elisa Renta ‘21, attendee, said:

“Getting the opportunity to ‘meet’ Dante Basco was kind of emotional, especially during this time. Basco has been such a big part of my childhood, and with the recent resurgence of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ during quarantine, his message of unity and finding balance within yourself and your surroundings was so impactful and motivational.”

Be sure to look for Dante Basco’s upcoming projects in the future.
